Friday: Take Off Your Pants

It's casual Friday, and Sam's relaxing so much, he's even letting his back hair down. Give us a call, we're taking all comers, at 866-303-2270. In the first hour we'll welcome Joe Conason in studio, and after that, we'll host our very own Sam Seder Show Purity Ball. Bring the kiddies close to the radio transmitter, and we'll cleanse their souls. Or at least give them a good bath.

Morning Sam & Crew!! and bloggers!

Brinksmanship Doesn’t Always End in Battle
America and Iran are barreling toward a collision. It doesn't have to be this way.

By Michael Hirsh
Newsweek
Updated: 7:30 p.m. CT March 29, 2007
March 29, 2007 - Is war between the United States, its allies and Iran inevitable? It certainly feels that way right now. This is a tit-for-tat escalation right out of the textbook. Since Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Navy seized 15 British sailors in the Persian Gulf last week, Tehran has paraded the captives before TV cameras and elicited apologies from them in a way that probably violates the Geneva Conventions (which bar humiliating treatment of prisoners). Iran’s armed forces have fired off new test missiles, while George W. Bush has put on the biggest show of U.S. naval power in the Gulf in years.

British sailors have been detained before, most recently in a similar Gulf incident in 2004. But this time, Tehran shows no sign of releasing its prisoners soon. The standoff is expected to continue while the United States holds Iranian personnel inside Iraq under mysterious circumstances and British Prime Minister Tony Blair petitions the United Nations to secure his sailors’ freedom, rather than talking directly with Tehran.

Blair’s approach to the U.N. will only aggravate the dispute, says one international diplomat who is familiar with Tehran’s thinking, who requested anonymity when speaking of such sensitive matters. After last week’s second resolution against its nuclear program, Iran takes a particularly dim view of the Security Council. Not surprisingly, Iran abruptly dropped a conciliatory offer to release the lone female prisoner, and Tehran’s chief nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, warned that the prisoners now “may face a legal path”—a clear threat to prosecute them, possibly as spies. “The British have got to come down from their high horse. They’ve got to work at solving this bilaterally,” says the international diplomat. “They shouldn’t take the higher moral ground.”

Patrick Fitzgerald Swift-Boated by Bush Admin Amidst U.S. Attorney Purge Scandal, Assisted (Again) by Washington Post
DoJ Rated Prosecutor 'Very Strong' --- NOT 'Undistinguished' --- But WaPo Ran With Claims from 'Unnamed Adminstration Officials' Anyway
Who Fed the Poison Pill? And Why Did it Run Unchecked?

Has the Washington Post been fooled (again) by high-level ‘leakers’? It sure looks that way.

On Tuesday, March 20, the Post ran a front-page article on the DOJ-U.S. Attorneys scandal that led off:

U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald was ranked among prosecutors who had ‘not distinguished themselves’ on a Justice Department chart sent to the White House in March 2005, when he was in the midst of leading the CIA leak investigation...
The item was sourced to unnamed “administration officials” who gave it to two WaPo reporters “yesterday.”

This juicy lede graf was followed up:

The ranking placed Fitzgerald below "strong U.S. attorneys..." but above "weak U.S. attorneys who...chafed against Administration initiatives, etc.," according to Justice documents.
The major problem with this story? It’s not true. The Department of Justice never 'ranked' U.S. Attorney Fitzgerald negatively or as 'undistinguished.' According to sworn testimony by D. Kyle Sampson, today in the Senate Judiciary Committee, Fitzgerald was rated 'very strong' internally in the DOJ.

So who fed the Post that story? And why did they run it without pinning it down (actually confirming it!) first?...

Among the audience at the Oslo congress center was the chairman of the Nobel Peace Prize committee, Ole Danbolt Mjoes.

"I really have been wanting to see that show for a long time," Mjoes said before Gore's speech, stressing that he was attending "as a private person" and did not plan to meet with Gore. He was seated at the back of the room."

Children massacred by Uganda army according to report
by Chris in Paris · 3/30/2007 02:52:00 AM ET

The Bush-friendly government often struggles with the truth, so groups such as Save the Children might be more reliable sources than government and military leaders.

Ugandan army raids in the country's troubled northeast killed up to 66 children who were shot or crushed by armored vehicles and stampeding animals, aid workers said Friday, citing witnesses.

Children's rights charity Save the Children said it has met with 256 people who reported the deaths during raids by the Ugandan People's Defense Force on a cattle ranch in Karamoja on February 12.

"Reports of children being killed in indiscriminate, illegal and inhumane way is absolutely devastating. Such allegations must be fully investigated and those involved brought to account," said Valter Tinderholt, country director of Save the Children in Uganda.

Anti-Semite Andy Martin in NewsMax: "Free Obama's White Grandmother"

http://mediamatters.org/items/200703290011

In a March 28 column for NewsMax.com titled "Free Obama's White Grandmother," "Internet journalist" Andy Martin wrote that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), whom he called "one of the most racist politicians in America today," has "locked the grandmother who actually raised him away in a closet," adding: "[T]he 'segregation' of Madelyn Dunham, Obama's white grandmother, and only real grandmother, has to be one of the cruelest and most mendacious political kidnappings this nation has ever seen." Martin wrote that Dunham "is the 'Prisoner of Obama,' and of Obama's racist myth that he is 'Black' and not 'Black and White.' "

Martin offered no evidence for any of his allegations, other than quoting from a March 27 Chicago Tribune article, which reported that "the Obama campaign declined to make Madelyn Dunham, 84, available" for an interview

Public Will Lose Interest As Feuding Over Justice Vs Injustice For Hicks Enters More Shrill Phase

David Hicks became the first 'terror' suspect to face what passes for justice at the Guantanamo military tribunal, and he will go down in the history books for that reason alone.

In the end, the military tribunal hearing, which was supposed to be the start of the first Gitmo terror trial, wasn't much of a show at all. It barely lasted a few hours in total.

Despite the charges against him, such as they were, it's hard to go past the convincing argument made by his father, Terry Hicks, that his son would plead guilty to just about anything if it meant he would be set free from his "living hell".

A huge slice of the Australian public would appear to be in agreement with Terry Hicks, if the thousands who commented on talkback radio and on media news blogs are to be believed.

In the long-term, Terry Hicks' argument for why his son pleaded guilty will over-ride the "justice delivered" claims now being made by the Australian and American governments.

That he pleaded guilty to get out of Gitmo and will settle in the long-term memories of most Australians as the reason why Hicks 'confessed' to giving material support to the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan.

NY Times reported without refuting Bush's false claim about House appropriation earmark

http://mediamatters.org/items/200703290012

A March 28 New York Times article reported without refuting President Bush's false claim that the $6.4 million for "the House of Representatives' 'salaries and expense accounts' " -- included in the emergency supplemental bill for the war in Iraq recently approved by the House -- was "not related to the war and protecting the United States of America." In fact, the provision to which Bush was referring is for funding for "contingency operations directly related to the global war on terrorism, and other unanticipated defense-related operations," which according to The Washington Post is "a highly classified upgrade of Capitol security that has been underway since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001."

'Arrow can fully protect against Iran'
By YAAKOV KATZ

Recent modifications made to the Arrow enable Israel's ballistic missile defense system to successfully intercept and destroy any ballistic missile in the Middle East, including nuclear-capable missiles under development by Iran, Arieh Herzog, the head of the Defense Ministry's Homa Missile Defense Agency, has told The Jerusalem Post.

In a rare interview that will appear in full in Monday's Post, Herzog provides an inside look at the decision-making process behind Israel's missile defense systems, led by the Israeli- and American-developed Arrow missile, one of the only operational ballistic missile defense systems in the world.

On Monday, the IAF successfully tested a newly modified Arrow interceptor.

Iran and Syria, Herzog said, were investing unprecedented amounts of money in long-range ballistic missile capabilities - with the help of North Korea - and had all but given up building modern air forces.

"The Iranians are continually increasing the range of their missiles," he said. "They are buying technology and in some cases even complete systems from North Korea and other countries."

Yesterday was an 'oversight & popcorn' day for me. I was glued to C-SPAN from about 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It was fascinating to watch.

I heard a guest say on C-SPAN that no one was expecting a smoking gun from Kyle Sampson's testimony. Apparently, Kyle Sampson's opening statement had been leaked.

1) Kyle Sampson said "I don't remember" 122 times.
2) Revealed the fact that he even brought up firing Fitzgerald and later withdrew.
3) He suggested using the Patriot Act loophole to circumvent Congress.
4) Implicated Gonzales, Miers, and Rove as decision makers.
5) Stated that Gonzales statements were not accurate.
6) Revealed sub standard record keeping. Little pieces of paper documenting which AG's should be fired.
7) Revealed his lack of experience as a lawyer.
8) His testimony revealed that congress will need more testimony.
9) Never clearly explained why the AG's were fired.
10) Never advised Carol Lam that they had issues with immigration.
11) Never revealed who put Iglesis name on the list.

Maybe there was no smoking gun, but I think the Dems got a lot more than they were expecting.

Vegas homeless men win $45,000 in suit over sleeping near feces

Associated Press
Published on: 03/30/07
LAS VEGAS — Three homeless men mistakenly arrested last year on charges of sleeping too close to a pile of feces have settled a lawsuit against the city for $45,000.

Eastman Webber, David Hicks and Jerry Halfpap each received a check for $10,000 in the settlement of their federal civil rights lawsuit, according to American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada, which sued on their behalf.

City spokesman Jace Radke confirmed the settlement Thursday.

The men were arrested in November for violating a provision of a Las Vegas ordinance no longer on the books. The city council had approved the ordinance in August, making it illegal to sleep within 500 feet of a deposit of feces or urine, but then repealed it in September.

City Attorney Brad Jerbic has said that part of the ordinance was a mistake.

The men were arrested Nov. 26 at a park across from City Hall.

Their lawsuit, seeking $2 million each, stated that only Webber was asleep at the time and that the three were handcuffed "while dozens of onlookers observed the ordeal."

"They were arrested, taken off to jail, for 'sleeping too close to poop,'" said Gary Peck, executive director of the ACLU of Nevada. "Their rights were violated — violated in a rather egregious fashion."

The arrests escalated tensions between homeless advocates and the city officials, which have been criticized for unorthodox attempts to clean up parts of town populated by the homeless. A city ordinance banning giving food to indigent people in parks was declared unconstitutional in November.

The men's attorney E. Brent Bryson said the $45,000 settlement was reasonable.

"The realities are that these individuals are not capable of maintaining and sustaining an ongoing litigation," he said. "This quick money to them represents an ability for them to get back on their feet."

Only Hicks, 44, knew what he would do with the cash.

"I'm going to get my own transitional housing," he said. "Like a typical citizen, I plan on looking through the newspaper and on foot for rentals. I have a game plan."

Greetings All:

Thanks Cat Chew for the Seder Rumor link. Maron though funny is a quite a narcissist. He is also appears to be a major drama queen with a substance abuse problem.

Here is a blogger's post from Cat Chew's link, I think it describes the situation accurately:

"I have a Google alert on Air America radio and read almost everything I can about it. It became apparent to me over a year ago that most of the letters and comments advocating for Marc Maron were being written by the same person. I also had the chance to hear Maron when KTLK here in L.A. gave him a 10-midnight slot and this confirmed for me that the idea that hundreds of blog comments in favor of this guy would be preposterous."

"The idea that a mentally ill Maron-ette would rope Air America mainstay Sam Seder into this game is sickening to me. We have enough problems with the stunning dirty trick played upon Air AMerica by Clear Channel, which has shut down 20 AAR affiliates since Howard Dean credited AAR with helping to swing a dozen races (including all 3 Ohio affiliates which were key to Dem victory there)."

Maron owes an apology to Sam Seder, a genuinely talented and passionate liberal, who tried to help his friend Maron by giving him a weekly segment on his show. Shame!

Excerpt

Although evidence of a direct connection between the fired U.S. Attorney’s refusal to bring voter fraud cases is incomplete, there is every indication that a great deal more information will surface if congressional investigators are given a free hand. Since 2000, the Bush Administration has used the Justice Department Civil Rights Division to tweak law enforcement to advance Republican political fortunes in closely contested states by attacking black voters. In every election under the current Administration, the Republican Party has funded voter suppression programs aimed at African Americans and other reliably Democratic populations. Not surprisingly, the Justice Department has turned a blind eye to these legally questionable programs. At the same time, the Bush Justice Department has approved Republican-backed redistricting decisions in Mississippi and Texas that have disadvantaged Blacks and Latinos and benefited white Republicans; plans that many non-partisan, career Justice Department attorneys who reviewed them believed violated the Voting Rights Act. It has also given its blessing to a Republican voter ID bill out of Georgia that one federal judge likened to a poll tax. Bush appointees in the Justice Department have also decreased voting rights enforcement and brought the first “reverse discrimination” case under the Voting Rights Act. In this unprecedented suit, Justice Department attorneys charged the black Democratic leadership of Noxubee County, Mississippi with violating the rights of the white minority. This pattern of abuse in the Civil Rights Division suggests that the Bush Administration is in not squeamish about using the Justice Department for political ends. It is only common sense, then, to suspect that the Bush Administration would try to use the rest of the Justice Department in a similar fashion.

In light of this pattern of deceptive and illegal behavior, black folk should not only be demanding that the White House cooperate with Congress in the investigation of the above mentioned firings, but that Congress broaden the investigation. After all, the Bush Administration’s use of the law enforcement functions of the executive branch for partisan political purposes has not been limited to the Justice Department. Only months before the 2004 election, the IRS initiated an audit of the NAACP, one of the largest voter registration organizations in the black community

Flying rocks and teargas marked the 22nd annual Young Combatants’ Day, which commemorates the slaying of brothers Eduardo and Rafael Vergara Toledo by Augusto Pinochet’s military forces in 1985.
The Vergara brothers, active members of the often violent “Movement of the Revolutionary Left” (MIR), were peppered with bullets by military police during an anti-Pinochet protest in the low-income Villa Francia district. Eduardo died instantly; Rafael was dragged into a police van, cuffed, beaten and finally shot in the head. Their bodies were left in the street.

MIR leaders decided to designate March 29 as Young Combatants’ Day (Dia del Joven Combatiente), so that the Vergara brothers and other youth who rose up to fight military repression in the 80’s would not be forgotten.

You know, in the past, the revolutionary in me has looked at the world and seen only poverty, injustice, exploitation, misery, war, and oppression. And so naturally I am compelled to want to overthrow the capitalist system and institute something kinder in its place. On the other hand (and this is the crux of the dilemma), the romantic in me looks at the world and sees only beauty: the beauty of nature, of the human spirit, of the interconnectedness of all things, of art, of little things. And so this side of me wants to preserve and augment what is beautiful in the world.

How then to merge the revolutionary spirit with the romantic spirit? I would contend that this is the key task of grassroots social movements today. I think this was the spirit behind the name of the radical group Love and Rage which is unfortunately now defunct. Furthermore, the autonomist philosophers Giorgio Agamben and Michael Hardt are working at the moment on developing LOVE as a political concept. I can't wait until their works on this topic are released! I think they're due out in a few years time.

I have been working on a campaign to screw Fox News like they've been screwing the American people. I contacted one of the companies that sponsors Fox News program and alerted them to my thought on that support. If enough people do that with enough of their sponsors, they will have to change their format to something more honest. Here is a copy of the reply they sent me. It's time to fight back against this coercive bastion of misinformation!

Was The British-Iranian Hostage Crisis Staged? (YES)

Surfing the Apocalypse
Thursday, March 29, 2007

Many of you may be rightly highly suspicious of the timing of all this.

Evidently it appears that there is far more to this so called British hostage capture crisis than what has thus far been reported by virtually all of the MSM.

In a very revealing analytical studio commentary on The BBC's Newsnight programme last night: Diplomatic Editor: Mark Urban demonstrated to Host: Jeremy Paxman: that the video footage released by the Iranians yesterday - of those 15 British service personnel being "captured" - seems to have been FAKED in large part!

He also went on to illustrate how viritually inconceivable it is that such an event (like the alleged "ambush" of British Military personnel by the Iranians) could actually happen: given the fact that the area of water where this event supposedly took place was well within the Radar Scope of HMS Cornwall (not to mention a whole host of other vessels: WHICH WERE ALL MYSTERIOUSLY ABSENT at the moment when the Iranian interception party appeared on the scene!)

From this both he & show Host Jeremy Paxman conclude that The Royal Navy were (at the very least!) grossly negligent in their duty of policing The Shat Al Arab/International Waterways (hence their clamour to blitz the Media with "evidence" of their "innocence".)

It is when one considers the implications of what The BBC are getting at (but not saying directly!) that one realizes this entire thing may have really been a deliberate SET UP: i.e. either a TRAP laid by The British for The Iranians to fall into, or (even more mind bogglingly!) a TRAP laid by The British AND The Iranians (together with everyone else within The NWO Club) for The World to fall into!!!

Watch the requisite report from the aforementioned Newsnight programme, and judge for yourselves:

Pakistan's $4.2 Billion "Blank Check" for US Military Aid

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/032907O.shtml

In the three years after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, US military aid to Pakistan soared to $4.2 billion, compared to $9.1 million in the three years before the attacks - a 45,000 percent increase - boosting Pakistan to the top tier of countries receiving this type of funding. More than half of the new money was provided through a post-9/11 Defense Department program - Coalition Support Funds - not closely tracked by Congress.

I think that if the Bush Jr. team plotted and faked 9/11 and ALL THEY GOT OUT OF IT WAS AN IRAQ INVASION AND A FEW PATHETIC SURVEILLANCE PROGRAMS, then they need to ask for their conspiracy money back.

Good god, this country has invaded plenty of nations without any 9/11 before -- and in fact closely considered occupying Iraq at the first gulf war.

Besides, here's a challenge for those who seem to believe that the only, only, only important thing ever to have happened on the planet was their 9/11 conspiracy:

Show me some argument that if you got what you wanted, and completely, officially, and absolutely proved that Bush Jr. & Co. plotted and faked 9/11, show me that any much more would happen than a couple of these guys go to jail.

It wouldn't end the two party system.
It wouldn't stop the role of money in politics.
It wouldn't stop the vast theft of American incomes by the top 0.01% of the wealthy.
It wouldn't make US foreign policy more peaceful or just.
It wouldn't do any of those things.

So, if you're convinced that 9/11 was an inside job, fine, pursue it.

But quit trying to convince me that it is the biggest thing ever and that pursuing that would suddenly and magically make America right.

The '9/11 Inside Job Is Everything' crowd is wrong, wrong, wrong. I for one want a huge change in this country, and it won't come from the unveiling of any conspiracy -- it will only happen in the normal ways all such revolutionary changes happen: a hell of a lot of organizing, work, long-term dedication, and resistance.
