Friday: Take Off Your Pants

It's casual Friday, and Sam's relaxing so much, he's even letting his back hair down. Give us a call, we're taking all comers, at 866-303-2270. In the first hour we'll welcome Joe Conason in studio, and after that, we'll host our very own Sam Seder Show Purity Ball. Bring the kiddies close to the radio transmitter, and we'll cleanse their souls. Or at least give them a good bath.

Hey Edna Ellen… The retarded blog post you think describes the Maron situation accurately is total crap. There is still a blog for fans of morning sedition that gets between 60 to 150 comments a day! (www.morningseditionists.com/msblog) Considering that fact how could hundreds of blog comments about that guy be preposterous? im sure a few of those people have written to air america about Maron…… Im also fairly certain they are not the same person seeing as I have met at least ten of them! Ummmmm one last thing Maron no longer has a substance abuse problem he is all cleaned up and off the sauce. I will give you the narcissism. Even with that he still did the right thing by his friend and that’s what counts in the end! Maron owes no such apology!

Make one damn argument that proving that 9/11 was an Inside Job would change much.

C'mon. C'mon now. Make your argument.

Convince us that proving 9/11 was an Inside Job would change a whole helluva lot.

Or is that what you're afraid of: you're afraid that even if you proved that 9/11 Was An Inside Job that the unicorns wouldn't come out to play, that the pots of gold wouldn't appear at the ends of the rainbows, that the news media would suddenly start telling the truth...

Yes. I believe that. If you think for one minute that a society which concealed a 9/11 Inside Job couldn't also safely channel citizen anger into a few convictions, a few weeks of 24 hour news coverage, and sappy made-for-TV movies, you're just as naive and babyish as I thought.

This is why you're naive. You're a combination of Superman-comic book fans and Maoist pseudo-revolutionaries.

You think proving one conspiracy would magically make the country better, and all the big manly patriots would come out of their houses with their muskets and put the government right.

You're wrong. You could even be right about 9/11, but you're extremely stupid and naive about how revealing that would make America magically better.

Sam,
Doesn't the title conjure up a weird feeling? I think it has an incestious overtone. My question is where is the mother-son purity ball?

Not to be gross but this gives a new meaning to the song "Daddies Little Girl"

No sex please, we're daddy's little girls

by Jocelyne Zablit

WASHINGTON (AFP) - It has all the ingredients of a wedding. The proud tuxedo-clad father, the frosted white cake, the limousines and an exchange of vows.

But there is no groom and the girl in the long gown is no bride. She's daddy's little girl, there to take a vow of chastity.

In what is becoming a trend among conservative Christians in the United States, girls as young as nine are pledging to their fathers to remain virgins until they wed, in elaborate ceremonies dubbed "Purity Balls."

The gala affairs are intended to celebrate the father-daughter relationship.

The highlight is when the fathers and daughters exchange vows, with dad signing a covenant to protect his daughter's chastity by living an unblemished life and the daughter promising not to have sex until marriage.

Many fathers at the ceremonies also slip "purity rings" around the finger of their misty-eyed daughters or offer them "chastity bracelets" and other jewelry that the girls can entrust to their husbands on their wedding night.

"The father makes a pledge that he is going to keep his mind pure and be faithful to her mother and there is also a time when there is a conversation about putting the right kinds of things in your mind, such as the father not using pornography," Leslee Unruh, founder of Abstinence Clearinghouse, a leader in the so-called purity movement, told AFP in describing the balls.

She said some 1,400 Purity Balls were held across the United States in 2006, mainly in the south and midwest, and double that number were expected to take place this year.

Mike Parcha, who recently attended one of these balls with his 11-year-old daughter Lora in the western state of Colorado, said the events reinforce his family's Christian beliefs.

"We realize that purity is a lifestyle, not an event, and this is just a celebration of that lifestyle and of that relationship that I have with my daughters," he said. "The ball is a culmination of the relationship we have with God and with each other."

He said his three daughters have looked forward to attending the balls and have no qualms about pledging to remain virgins until marriage.

"They are just all for it, they think it's the greatest thing," said Parcha, 43, who is a college math teacher. "We raise our children as Christians, we share the same beliefs .... and we're on the same page.

"It's not like there is a tug of war of any kind going on."

His two older daughters, aged 11 and 18, have attended the balls while the youngest, aged 4, must wait a few years. The three girls, along with their three brothers, are all home schooled. Parcha's oldest daughter Christy, who recently graduated from high school, is now working on a fictional book about "the emotional purity of a young girl as she grows up."

The first Purity Ball in the United States was organized in 1998 by Generations of Light, a popular Christian ministry based in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Randy Wilson, who runs the ministry with his wife, said the idea was to create an event that celebrates the bonds between father and daughter.

"We saw that in our culture there wasn't a place for the father to work for a good relationship with his daughter," Wilson told AFP. "So this (relationship) allows the daughter to become a stronger person in her culture as she is bombarded with all the sexual images that are out there."

Wilson, who has five daughters, said the balls have become so popular over the years that there is now a waiting list for those wishing to attend.

Enquiries are also pouring in from aboard with organizations or churches in New Zealand, Britain and other countries asking for guidance on how to organize such gatherings.

The popularity of the balls in the United States, especially among evangelical Christians, mirrors the Bush administration's support of abstinence education in US schools. The government's funding for such initiatives has more than doubled in recent years to 206 million dollars (150 million euros).

But critics say that while teaching abstinence to children may be laudable, it is just as essential to make them aware of sexually transmitted diseases and condom use.

They also point to studies showing that the majority of adolescents who take purity pledges break them within a few years, often by engaging in risky and unprotected sex.

One study conducted by researchers at the universities of Columbia and Yale found that 88 percent of pledgers wind up having sex before marriage.

"Unfortunately these young people tend, once they start to have sex, to have more partners in a shorter period of time and to use contraception much less than their non-pledging peers," said Debra Hauser, executive vice president at Advocates for Youth, a Washington-based non-profit organization.

"Teens may pledge with the best of intention... and then as they break their pledges they are so shamed and embarrassed that it's unlikely they will go for help."

Giuliani Acknowledges Hearing of Kerik Mob Ties
The New York Times is reporting former New York mayor and Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani has given grand jury testimony that differs from what he previously said about his knowledge of former police commissioner Bernard Kerik. Giuliani claimed he had no knowledge of Kerik’s links to a company accused of mob ties when Giualiani supported his bid for police commissioner and later as head of homeland security. But in the newly-revealed testimony, Giuliani said his former chief investigator told him he had briefed Giuliani on some aspects of the case. Giuliani says he does not remember the briefing but is not disputing his investigator’s recollection. Kerik pleaded guilty last year to letting the company conduct more than one hundred thousand dollars in free renovations to his Bronx apartment.

Saying that you think or feel that there would be a 'violent upheaval' would happen by citizens if a 9/11 Inside Job were proven isn't an argument.

It's an assumption.

It also has nothing to do with my question that much would change.

Again, there could be 'violent' actions, quickly repressed by police, and a few people (probably not Bush Jr. or Cheney, they'd claim plausible deniability) would go to jail.

Violent upheaval done, system restored, back to normal operations.

So far the '9/11 Insider Jobbers' don't make an argument that things would change, they just casually throw out the assumption that Proving 9/11 Was An Inside Job WOULD JUST CHANGE EVERYTHING, IT JUST WOULD.

I don't buy it. I don't buy the lazy assumption and I don't buy the pathetic, over-the-top martyr / pseudo-revolutionary attitude of the 9/11 Insider Jobbers.

They spend so much time obsessing about every microsecond of the Twin Towers, but apparently they can't sit down for one minute to argue that Proving 9/11 Was An Inside Job would bring the ponies and magic singing angels they imply.

Because he disagrees with you on this issue, he's a bad person?

Even on this blog there are many who believe that 9/11 was an inside job and many don't. But to call someone a bad person if they disagree with you is wrong.

And the way people have been for the past six years, I doubt you'd get the response you want even if it were proved 9/11 was inside.

This is not the 60's. Believe me I know because that was my generation and it was hard even then to get people to believe that Viet Nam was wrong. Some still don't believe it was wrong.

Panel Asks Rove for Information on '08 Election Presentation

By Scott Higham and Robert O'Harrow Jr.
Washington Post Staff Writers
Friday, March 30, 2007; A05

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee sought more information yesterday about a presentation by a White House aide given to political appointees at the General Services Administration that discussed targeting 20 Democratic congressional candidates in the next election.

In a letter to White House political affairs director Karl Rove, the committee chairman, Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.), asked about the Jan. 26 videoconference by Rove deputy J. Scott Jennings, which was directed to the chief of the GSA and as many as 40 agency officials stationed around the country.

Jennings's 28-page presentation included 2006 election results and listed the names of Democratic candidates considered beatable and Republican lawmakers thought to need help. At a hearing Wednesday about the GSA, Waxman said the presentation and follow-up remarks allegedly made by agency chief Lurita Alexis Doan may have violated the Hatch Act, a law that restricts federal agencies and employees from using their positions for political purposes.

In yesterday's letter, Waxman asked Rove who prepared the presentation and whether Rove or Jennings consulted with anyone about whether it might be in violation of the Hatch Act. Waxman also asked whether Rove or any members of his staff have given the same or similar PowerPoint presentations to political appointees at other government agencies.

The PowerPoint presentation was a focus of Waxman's hearing Wednesday into Doan's 10-month tenure and into allegations that she has acted inappropriately. Doan denied the allegations at the hearing.

Key Rove aide fingered in US Attorney investigation to step down; Could face subpoena Michael Roston
Published: Friday March 30, 2007

Multiple sources reported today that a top aide to President George W. Bush's key adviser Karl Rove will soon step down from her job in the White House. The aide, Sara M. Taylor, was identified in yesterday's hearing with a former top Justice Department official as seeking the resignation of a US Attorney in Arkansas. She could still face a subpoena, RAW STORY learned.

Last week, the House and Senate Judiciary Committees authorized subpoenas of Scott Jennings, a deputy to Taylor, who is a top aide to Karl Rove. A House Judiciary Committee aide told RAW STORY she could still face a subpoena today.

"The people for whom subpoenas were authorized were a result of the document review, and it could be could be that Jennings' name was more prevalent," said a House Judiciary Committee aide. "Other subpoenas can be authorized or issued should any other names come up."

Taylor and Jennings were both fingered yesterday by Kyle Sampson, the former chief of staff to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, as playing key roles in the elevation of Tim Griffin, a top staffer in the Bush-Cheney 2004 campaign and a Army Judge Advocate General, as the interim US Attorney for Arkansas in place of Bud Cummins.

Hi Sam,

Having just heard that next week will be the final week of your show, I am incenced and outraged. I know you've been hinting this might happen, but to find out it's true, fills me with anger and disgust.

Your show has been an incredible tonic to my mornings. And right now I'm feeling as betrayed by Air America as I did when they dumped Lizz Winstead and Maron.

In any event, the following is a copy of the email I just fired off to the management of Air America. I hope my fellow listeners will do the same and inundate these morons, letting them know just what a betrayal of trust with their listeners this is.

As for you, while I know you'll land on your feet, I'm filled with a sense of sadness and loss that a voice I have counted on to give me truth laced with humor and a modicum of sanity, will be gone from the airwaves. Please let us know where you land so we can follow and contiue to listen. And best of luck!

Sincerely,
Jonathan Marten

To the Management of Air America Radio:

As a loyal and grateful listener to Air America since day one, and a native New Yorker, I was thrilled to hear the Green family was taking over the station. Given the family’s contributions to NYC, my feeling was this could only bode well for the future of air America. Now, in two fell swoops, my level of disgust for the management of Air America, my dismay at its on-air practices, and my need to find a new Progressive voice on the airwaves seems to be renewed.

I have just learned that next week will be the final week of The Sam Seder Show. For the first time since Air America unceremoniously bounced the great Lizz Winstead, Marc Maron, and Mike Malloy, you finally have a morning worth listening to again (I refer to the combination of The Young Turks and Mr. Seder), and now you’ve set out to destroy that too.

It’s not bad enough that on the “Flagship station” for America’s “Progressive voice” you have to stream over the web or listen via XM satellite to avoid the right-wing prattling of a hack like Armstrong Williams and his pathetic sidekick, Sam Greenfield (the Alan Colmes to Williams’s Sean Hannity), but now you’re getting rid of Sam Seder, other than Randy Rhodes, the best progressive voice you have left and a godsend to those of us begging to here intelligence, wit and truth in the morning!

At this juncture I have to ask, what the hell is wrong with you people???

Don’t get me wrong. I love Rachel Maddow. And I have a great deal of respect for Thom Hartmann, although I wish he would stop giving so many right-wing apologists the additional air-time to spew their lies. But the continued changing and weakening of the Air America lineup is disturbing, at best. I can only hope that Messrs. Seder and Maron, like Mr. Malloy before them, line up shows on another network so those of us feeling bereft of the early promise of Air America, have someplace to go for the hope and honesty these people have shown us.

And to the Green brothers, shame on you. You have either sold your Progressive audience out, or are being led to by “radio professionals” who don’t seem to understand the Air America audience.

Sincerely,
Jonathan Marten

House Committee requests deposition of former Rove assistant in connection with Abramoff RAW STORY
Published: Friday March 30, 2007

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee today requested that former Special Assistant to the President, Susan Ralston, appear at a deposition on Apr. 5th, as part of the committee's ongoing investigation into the connection between the White House and lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Ralston, who was a deputy to White House Adviser Karl Rove between 2001 and 2006, appeared frequently in emails collected in the case.

The Committee found that Ralston had 69 contacts with Abramoff or his associates during that time, according to a letter sent by Committee Chair Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA).

The following letter, sent to the Susan Ralston Friday, was acquired by RAW STORY.

March 30-April 1, 2007 -- Covert shenanigans in Africa. The "usual suspects" are involved.

Our intelligence sources in Africa report that the recent rebellion in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by forces loyal to Jean-Pierre Bemba, the warlord who was defeated in the recent presidential election by current President Joseph Kabila, was supported by U.S. and other Western intelligence services. At least 600 people died in the violence in Congo, which was mainly centered in the capital of Kinshasa. Bemba, the leader of the Movement for the Liberation of Congo (MLC), took refuse in the embassy of South Africa after his rebellion was put down by the national army. Congo's prosecutor general has indicted Bemba for treason and inciting rebellion. A search of MLC storage facilities revealed that Bemba's supporters had been wearing new uniforms of the Congolese National Army to commit atrocities in Kinshasa that would later be blamed on Kabila.

Baby Blue

Bob Dylan

You must leave now, take what you need, you think will last.
But whatever you wish to keep, you better grab it fast.
Yonder stands your orphan with his gun,
Crying like a fire in the sun.
Look out the saints are comin' through
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

The highway is for gamblers, better use your sense.
Take what you have gathered from coincidence.
The empty-handed painter from your streets
Is drawing crazy patterns on your sheets.
This sky, too, is folding under you
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

All your seasick sailors, they are rowing home.
All your reindeer armies, are all going home.
The lover who just walked out your door
Has taken all his blankets from the floor.
The carpet, too, is moving under you
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

Leave your stepping stones behind, something calls for you.
Forget the dead you've left, they will not follow you.
The vagabond who's rapping at your door
Is standing in the clothes that you once wore.
Strike another match, go start anew
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

BALT SUN: Protesting and Legislating to End the War

To understand the passionate debate about the Iraq war spending bills over the last two weeks in Congress, and why so many committed anti-war Democrats support the House and Senate bills in their current form, we must understand the difference between protesting and legislating. Lawmakers who know how to use both are often movements' most essential actors.

Ojos De Brujo (Wizard Eyes)

If you think flamenco music means a lace mantilla, castanets, and responsive guitar licks, then Ojos De Brujo (Wizard Eyes) have got something for you. In Spain, flamenco isn’t just music but a culture, and the ramshackle, 10-member ODB collective represent the evolving nature of that culture and serve up a hypnotic fusion that demands the world listen. Forget the Gipsy Kings; if you haven’t heard Ojos De Brujo then you haven’t heard contemporary flamenco.

Flamenco music deeply reflects Spanish culture, from its elaborate vocal ornamentation, to its vivid expression. The roots of flamenco stem from gypsy or Rom immigrants, who arrived in Spain in the 15th century, as well as Jewish and Arabic refugees who holed up in the Andalusia Mountains, away from the Catholic Church’s forced conversions. The music of the three groups fused, creating a singular sound that was preserved through the Rom oral tradition. Although a flamenco artist may be payo or non-gypsy, the most acclaimed performers came from noted Rom cantaora (flamenco singer) areas or families. After flourishing for most of the 20th century, the tradition declined from the late ’50s to ’70s and was regulated to a few clubs and tourist spectacles.

Why do you think the bill was introduced in the Senate where it has little chance of passage?

Maybe I need an education here. Maybe you can call me and yell at me again and admonish me to take the holographic tin foil off my head.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, described as frustrated and animated, confronted presidential rival Sen. John McCain on the Senate floor after he blocked funding for a 9/11 responders' health care program, people familiar with the encounter told CNN.

Clinton, D-New York, has worked for years to secure funding for the program, a $45 million amendment added to the $120 billion-plus emergency funding bill for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"She got pretty hot about it," a Senate appropriations committee aide said about Thursday's encounter. "She went over to him and was trying to convince [McCain] it was a needed program, an important program, and was rebuffed."

Pelosi makes second visit to Middle East By ANNE FLAHERTY, Associated Press Writer
32 minutes ago

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) arrived in Israel on Friday and planned to visit Syria, a country the Bush administration has shunned, on her second fact-finding trip to the Middle East since taking the gavel in January.

Pelosi's repeat trip to the Middle East indicates she has no intention of letting the White House have the sole province on foreign policy. She has already forced legislation through the House that would order all combat troops out of Iraq by September 2008, a measure that resembles a similar measure approved by the Democratic-run Senate.

The Bush administration has mostly refused to engage Syria diplomatically because of its ties to terrorist networks. U.S. officials held their first direct, high-level contact with Syrian representatives in years this month when they met with officials from several Middle East countries in Baghdad to discuss Iraq.

Others traveling with Pelosi were Democratic Reps. Keith Ellison (news, bio, voting record) of Minnesota, Henry Waxman (news, bio, voting record) and Tom Lantos (news, bio, voting record) of California, and Nick Rahall (news, bio, voting record) of West Virginia, and Ohio Republican David Hobson (news, bio, voting record). Ellison is the first Muslim member of Congress.

The House has adjourned for a two-week spring break.

The group planned to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, and to travel to the West Bank to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said Ellison's spokesman, Rick Jauert.

The speaker plans to address the Israeli Knesset on Sunday in what will be her first address to a foreign government and as the highest ranking American woman to speak before the Israeli parliament, according to Pelosi's office.

She is expected to discuss "America's commitment to Israel and the challenges facing the two nations in the Middle East," according to a statement.

If more Americans -- including the president and those in Congress -- had to make the personal sacrifice of sending a son or daughter to this war, some for a second or third time, or if they had to pay the ultimate sacrifice of losing a child in this war, we'd be long past the "support our troops" slogan. We'd be pulling out and concentrating on the real war -- the war against terrorism....

But now we talk about the war, via my son, almost daily: How's he doing? Have you heard from him? Is he in Iraq yet? In a far more personal way, we discuss the impact on families and friends, the political maneuvering and the lack of progress in bringing stability to the country.

What we don't talk about are the daily news stories about soldiers killed in action.

Having a son on his way to Iraq hasn't changed my view of the war: We should not have invaded the country.

If this were a righteous war, it would be more bearable to see him go. But now there's a knot in the pit of my stomach every time I think about where he's headed, what he might have to do and what might be done to him. He and the other patriots are being sent to the wrong front.

No longer Bush’s war
but the GOP’s
It was conceived by a small band of neoconservatives who had on their side the vice president’s robust agreement and unflagging determination to have the United States return to Iraq. They, in turn, had the president’s ear.

Gov Report: Bush Is Hyping False Iraq Spending Deadline
Think Progress | March 30, 2007 02:17 PM

The Bush administration has been trying to force Congress to abandon its support for an Iraq withdrawal time line by claiming that a "clean" Iraq spending bill must be signed by mid-April or U.S. troops will suffer. The Hill reported, the Pentagon and the White House have been "sounding alarms and sketching worst-case scenarios if Congress does not pass the 2007 supplemental by April 15."

...
AMY GOODMAN: Professor Zimbardo, who should be held responsible for what happened at Abu Ghraib?

PROFESSOR ZIMBARDO: Well, my analysis is, individuals are always ultimately personally responsible. He and most of the other military police said, I’m guilty -- well, they had to say it, because they're in the pictures, what I call the trophy photos. He is willing to accept punishment. The situational analysis says, we should limit the extent of the punishment, because these are extreme mitigating circumstances. And what I do in The Lucifer Effect, and I have a wonderful website, we just put up called www. lucifereffect.com, we put the system on trial. To say, if you're going to put these soldiers, these good American soldiers on trial for what they did, my argument has been, the people who create this corrupting situation, they have to be put on trial, too. So, I have a virtual voting booth in which I put George Tenant on trial, the former Head of the CIA, Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, and President Bush. Because, in various ways, they created that situation which corrupted these good American young men and women.

From Kevin's Blog

http://freedemocracy.blogspot.com/2007/03/most-hated-family-in-america.html

...
What we're trying to do in the documentary is look at an activity that is so antisocial, so strange, so futile and at its worst, so cruel, and we're saying "Why? Why do that?", especially when you seem to be, for the most part, kind and sensitive people. We're exploring what is cruelty, trying to explain how something that really does very often just amount to cruelty could be perpetuated and passed down in a family. Why would nice people do such horrible things?

Assistant Secretary for Population Affairs Keroack Resigns Because of Unspecified Action Against His Private Medical Practice
[Mar 30, 2007]

Deputy Assistant Secretary for HHS' Office of Population Affairs Eric Keroack on Thursday announced that he will resign from the post due to an unspecified action taken against his private medical practice in Massachusetts by state Medicaid officials, the Washington Post reports (Lee, Washington Post, 3/30). The Bush administration in November 2006 appointed Keroack -- who was then medical director for A Woman's Concern, a pregnancy-counseling organization -- to the position, which does not require Senate confirmation.

Keroack advised HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt on issues including reproductive health and adolescent pregnancy. He also administered $283 million in annual family planning grants that HHS says are "designed to provide access to contraceptive supplies and information to all who want and need them with priority given to low-income persons." Many family planning advocates reportedly were angered by the appointment, and 14 Democratic senators and seven Democratic members of the House in November 2006 sent letters to Leavitt calling for Keroack's appointment to be withdrawn (Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 11/22/06).

An unnamed HHS spokesperson would not specify what action had been taken by Massachusetts Medicaid officials, adding, "We've said all we feel comfortable saying." Keroack on Thursday in an e-mail to colleagues said he "became aware" of the action taken by the Massachusetts Office of Medicaid and had initiated an appeals process, adding that the "appeals process will present a significant distraction to my ability to remain focused on my duties" (CQ HealthBeat, 3/29). Keroack said he met with HHS officials on Wednesday to discuss the action taken against him and to offer his resignation, the AP/Houston Chronicle reports. HHS Assistant Secretary for Health John Agwunobi in a statement said he accepted Keroack's resignation as "a result of this action" (Freking, AP/Houston Chronicle, 3/29). Agwunobi added that the agency "will move forward as expeditiously as possible to fill this position" (CQ HealthBeat, 3/29).

Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, in a statement said Keroack was "unqualified to run" the Office of Population Affairs and called on the Bush administration to appoint as a replacement a "legitimate, mainstream public health expert who supports family planning and access to birth control" (Reuters, 3/30). Massachusetts Medicaid officials were not available for comment, the AP/Chronicle reports (AP/Houston Chronicle, 3/29).

Waxman To Rice: Your Days Of Blowing Off My Letters Are Over
At the heart of the CIA leak scandal was a false claim, made by President Bush in the infamous 16 words from his State of the Union address, that Iraq had sought uranium from Niger for a nuclear device.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) has been trying for years to investigate how this fraudulent claim became part of the basis for sending our country to war, beginning with a letter to the White House two days before the war began.

The Bush administration has consistently refused his requests for information. Since the war began, Waxman has written 11 letters to Condoleezza Rice alone — she hasn’t responded to a single one.

On March 12, 2007, he wrote his first letter to Rice as committee chairman, asking that she respond by March 23. She didn’t, and Waxman has had enough:

Dear Madam Secretary:

On March 12, 2007, I sent you a letter renewing, as formal requests of the Committee, prior letter requests that I sent to you between 2003 and 2006. These requests sought information on the claim that Iraq sought uranium from Niger, White House treatment of classified information, the appointment of Ambassador Jones as “special coordinator” for Iraq, and other subjects. My March 12 letter is attached.

The March 12 letter requested a response by March 23 to several of the inquiries, but the Committee received no response from you.

I now request your appearance before the Committee at a hearing on Wednesday, April 18, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. in Room 2154, Rayburn House Office Building. At this hearing, you will be asked to provide testimony and respond to questions on the subjects outlined in the March 12 letter and the original request letters. …

Sincerely,
Henry A. Waxman
Chairman

Since Waxman wrote his March 12 letter, Rice has done more than a dozen press events, including interviews with Sean Hannity and Fox & Friends. Now it’s time she spend a few hours with Congress.

Jesse Jackson slams CBC/Fox debate. “Rev. Jesse Jackson today denounced the Congressional Black Caucus Institute’s planned presidential debate partnership with FOX. He called for yesterday’s decision to be reversed and for presidential candidates not to attend a FOX debate.” Jackson said, “Why would presidential candidates, or an organization that is supposed to advocate for Black Americans, ever give a stamp of legitimacy to a network that continually marginalizes Black leaders and the Black community?” Take action HERE.

UPDATE: Markos has a round-up of commentary, and notes: “I’ll be asking the campaigns early next week whether they plan on attending this debate, so this time they won’t be caught off guard by the question.”

Go here to take action against Fox / CBC debate
