Can I just say....you people are idiots.

You REALLY think Sam Seder is some kind of progressive, don't you?

He's a Democratic Party SHILL.

Proof? He ignored THE two biggest stories of the week, because they cast Democrats (and the likely Dem Prez nominee) in a bad light...

1. Nancy Pelosi allowing a provision that Bush had to get Congressional approval before attacking Iran to BE TAKEN OUT of the supplemental spending bill.

2. Hillary saying that she'd STILL support a "unknown" number of troops in Iraq if she becomes President.

Seder, Randi Rhodes, and the rest are hacks and unless it's Joe the Schmoe Lieberman, kiss ANY Democrat's ass rather than stand up for principles!

Sam,

Bill Scher makes a great point on the LiberalOasis.com blog this morning about the Democrats and progress Iraq.

Bottom line, over and over again, the Democrats need to make it clear to the American people that we want to leave (set deadline) Iraq and the Republicans want to stay indefinitely. Over time it will become obvious that the only way to end the occupation in Iraq is to elect the Democratic Party in '08.

I think the House vote yesterday and the defeated Reid vote yesterday show progress for the Democrats.

Eglin is the original "Club Fed," nicknamed as such back in the 1980s when prisoners were allowed to wear their own clothes and even go home to have dinner with their families.

Those fast and loose days are long gone, but the nickname has stuck. Inmates maintain the golf course at nearby Eglin Air Force Base, but make no mistake--they never get the chance to hit a few themselves. Disgraced shoe designer Steve Madden is serving his 41-month sentence here.

Location: Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
Opened: 1962
Capacity: 800
Population: 792

Amenities: Open dormitories hold 50 men who sleep in two-man cubicles. Softball, basketball, soccer, flag football, universal weight machine, free weights.
Vocational training offered in diesel and small-engine mechanics; dental assistant apprenticeships.
Prisoner perks: Eglin has an active music department that sponsors a number of inmate bands and also has a stash of instruments that prisoners can check out. Also of note is the camp's strong religious studies program that even goes so far as to offer Native American practitioners a small hide tent that can be used as a sweat lodge.

QUESTION FOR SAM & JOE:

As I understand it, the purge was Rove's (and the WH's) way to place Bush-loyalist AG's in key states to affect dirty tricks against Dems running in 2008. It's right out of the Nixon/Atwater playbook. Obviously, this is politically and morally very wrong - but is there actual legal criminality here (not the ensuing coverup)?

Sam, since it's Casual Friday, one thing I've been thinking about is all the crap going around about the deviciveness within the Democratic Party, especially due to the Liberals and Progressives among us. The right wing and the media love to jump on that as if it's a sign of weakness. After seven years of watching the Republicans marching in lock-step (or, goose-step, if you prefer), bending over for whatever the Bush-Cheney regime dictates, the ability of a party to have strong disagreements within its ranks seems to me to be a sign of strength, as well as a demonstration of the true spirit of independence and democracy.

From the liveblog:

Waxman:

to examine how the WH handles highly classified info. in 6/03 one of the nation's classified secrets (outing of Plame), repeatedly revealed to the media. This was a breach of nat'l security. I have nothing but contempt and anger for those who disclose the names...they are traitors.

How did this occur?
Did the WH take appropriate (step) after breach occurred?
What are necessary steps (to prevent this in the future)?

Fitzgerald investigation has a narrow criminal focus and didn't answer policy questions, it didn't seek to ascribe responsibility outside confines of the law.

Our role is different - its not our job to determine criminal culpability; we need to see what went wrong and make changes.

This is in open session - its appropriate, but challenging. she was a COVERT OPERATIVE OF THE CIA.

Waiting for Cicero said...

More:

She was covert.

at the time of the publication of Novak's column, her employment status was covert. this was classified info. She oversaw work of other CIA employees, GS14, step 6 of the payscale. Worked on highly sensitive and secretive matters. Without discussing specifics of her classified work, she worked on prevention, development and use of WMD's against the US. She faced significant risk to safety and life; took serious risks on behalf of our country.

Maintaining her cover critical to her and other's safety. (this outing) had serous effects (her cover, risks to others, undermined confidence ...)

This was so detrimental, CIA filed crimes report with the DOJ. Even now she is prohibited in discussing details of her work in public.

Some suggested she did not have a sensitive position; she has taken a lifelong oath to protect classified info, even after her employment ended.

Any characterization that minimizes (her) is flatly wrong. there should be no confusion on this point.

VPW opening statement, rough transcript:

We should not be seeking classified from Ms. Wilson in this open forum.

VPW opening statement: I'm honored to be invited and testify under oath...on the critical issue of classified information. I served loyally and to the best of my ability. worked on behalf of nat'l security and people of the US until my name was exposed... I can tell this committee even more. In the run up to the war worked in couterproliferation...I raised solid intelligence on WMD programs. Managed and ran secret worldwide operations and traveled to foreign countries on secret missions to find vital intelligence. I was proud of the serious responsibilities entrusted to me and dedicated to this work. It was not common knowledge on the Georgetown cocktail circuit. All was abruptly ended when my name was exposed.

Libby - was shocked by the evidence. My name was carelessly and wrecklessly abused. They should have been diligent in protecting me and every officer. CIA (goes to lengths to protect most sensitive staffers). Harm done is grave, but can't provide details in this hearing). It has jeopardized and destroyed entire networks of foreign agents who risk their and their families lives. Lives are at stake.

the travesty of what happened to me can happen to those. We knew we could be exposed by foreign entities; irony that (it came from domestic sources). My exposure arose from political motives.

Tradecraft of intelligence is not a product of speculation. All intelligence professionals are dedicated that they would rather be fired on the spot (than to be going through a politicized process). Politics and ideology must be stripped or the consequences will be more severe and our country placed in more danger.

Congress has constitutional duty to restore...and that includes intelligence.

Power may be an afrodesiac..but isnt that supposed to mean women or men in power are supposedly attracted to people in power. Its not supposed to mean as soon as Rudy or George get their promotion that they turn into a horn dog. Waling around talking about,"Mmmm, my money makes me horny, mwa ha ha ha ha,".

From this week's Cleveland Scene...

The unstoppable elf

While at least 16 lefties around the country waddle toward Congressman Dennis Kucinich's presidential campaign, smitten by his antiwar stance, the Federal Election Commission has proved again what Clevelanders knew all along: Kucinich's lone skill is holding press conferences starring Dennis Kucinich.

Remember his last campaign, when he blew $2.9 million in taxpayer money just to make himself a punch line on The Daily Show? Turns out Kucinich (D-Playland) was also putting on a clinic on how to violate federal election law.

An FEC audit shows that Kucinich kept spending taxpayer dollars long after he was ineligible to spend the cash. In the FEC's eyes, the congressman was eliminated from the race on March 4, 2004, after which he could use only private money. (Others believe Kucinich was eliminated in fifth grade, when doctors discovered he was an alien sent to earth to scare children and take up valuable space in Fourth of July parades.)

Despite being ineligible, Kucinich's ego, which has its own charge account at Dillard's, pressed on. He campaigned until July 29 -- the day Democrats picked John Kerry and finally shook Kucinich from their leg. In the meantime, he spent almost $2 million more -- almost $500,000 of which came from money that included federal funds. The feds can't say exactly how much extra taxpayer cheese the elf blew, but they've asked Kucinich to repay $135,515.

Kucinich also failed to report hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions and expenses, and failed to itemize another half-million dollars in contributions. The report officially makes Kucinich's run the least successful campaign since Punch's failed bid for treasurer of the Harbor Inn Dart Team, which we lost to a guy named Ron.

The campaign did not return multiple calls, but would presumably defend the congressman's decision to continue embarrassing himself. Though he earned only four votes, do you know how many of those little shampoos you can steal in five extra months on the campaign trail?

I think I survived on as some sort of mutant kos-borg, o.

I heard Tom Morello on Maddow's program earlier and wanted to make sure A. got a "heads up" about it. Tom talks about organizing in an upward manner, as opposed to waiting for some messianic "leader" to organize from the top down. He makes the point that all great civil/human rights achievements came from grassroots-type organization, as opposed to being granted by their government.

These notions have been put forth to try and smear the real facts and it would be nice if you could publicly seperate the two

the integrity of the process of how we get our info was affected. IN an effort to discount your husband's credibility, (it was raised of your involvement to send him to Niger). Said "his wife sent him", like my wife sends me to put out the trash. I want to ask = suggestion that you were involved seemed to drive the leaks to discount his credibility. Did you send him?

VP: No I did not recommend him, suggest him, no nepotism involved; I did not have the authority.

...
In 2/02, young junior officer who worked for me, came to me very upset. Rec'd a call from the OVP asking about report of yellow cake from Niger to be sold to Iraq. Another officer had heard this and knew that Joe had already gone over there and suggested that Joe go; had already served on the African continent. I was ambivalent at the time; had 2 yr. old twins at the time; wasn't overjoyed at the idea. My colleague suggested the idea; supervisor asked me to ask Joe to come in next week to discuss (the possibility; I said of course. An email was drawn up. It is that email that is being drawn out of proportion.)

VH: (talking about efforts to discredit Joe Wilson.) (the president said.. If anyone in this admin was involved (in the leaks), they would no longer be involved in this admin. (Anyone still there that was involved?)

VP: Yes, clearly Rove involved and still has a security clearance.

VH: failure to hold people accountable for leaking sends a terrible message.. Failure of president to fire sends a chilling message that WH is not willing to stand for those

VP: yes, I believe it undermines the president's words.

VH: Statements made at trial in respect to Rove...(talks about the Rove/Cooper conversation and asks about Rove's intent in this conversation).

VP: can't speculate on Rove's intent; just know what his words were

Green Party spurns Bush in Iraq protest

THE Green Party has declined an invitation to join President Bush's St Patrick's Day celebrations at the White House in protest over the war in Iraq and US policy on climate change.
In a brief joint statement on behalf of the party's executive, Dr John Barry and Dr Peter Doran said: "Green Party colleagues in the US and across the world have been consistent in their opposition to President Bush's illegal war in Iraq.

Suicide Was the Only Way Out of Iraq for Col. Westhusing

Writing in his suicide note, "I am sullied -- no more," U.S. Colonel Ted Westhusing, father of three, chose death over a life of lies and corruption in occupied Iraq.

Ted Westhusing was a true believer. And that was his fatal flaw.

A colonel in the U.S. Army, Westhusing had a good job teaching English at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He was a devout Catholic who went to church nearly every Sunday. He had a wife and three young children.

He didn't have to go to Iraq. But Westhusing was such a believer that he volunteered for what he thought was a noble cause. At West Point, Westhusing sought out people who opposed the war in an effort to change their minds. "He absolutely believed that this was a just war," said one officer who was close to him. "He was wholly enthusiastic about this mission." His tour of duty in Iraq was to last six months.

About a month before he was to return to his family -- on June 5, 2005 -- Westhusing was found dead in his trailer at Camp Dublin in Baghdad. At the time, he was the highest-ranking American soldier to die in Iraq. The Army's Criminal Investigation Command report on Westhusing's death explained it as a "perforating gunshot wound of the head and Manner of Death was suicide."

He was 44.
