Casual Friday, Hour 3

Maron's on deck this hour.

Make sure you listen to this Bill O'Reilly clip on Media Matters

Joel and Lauren's mics have been cut for three minutes. They will be back on at 11:17. Someone just sent this picture, claiming it is Joel. This is not, I repeat not, funny.

The White House called Brigham Young University in January and offered to have Vice President Dick Cheney speak at BYU's April Commencement exercises.

The Board of Trustees clearly was delighted to land a sitting vice president a year after President Bush was unable to accept their invitation to speak in April 2006, and the three-man First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, acting in their roles as chairman and vice chairmen of the board, invited Cheney.

"We are honored to have the vice president speak," BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said.

Not everyone on campus agrees.

"There is controversy, and it's good," said Ted Lyon, a professor of Spanish and Portuguese. "BYU has been known as a hotbed of political rest. I hope we have a little unrest, too."

Political science professor Darren Hawkins said it's possible the visit of an unpopular vice president in the midst of the Iraq war and in the wake of the Scooter Libby trial might even spark a protest by BYU students, a rarity on the conservative campus.

"He may be the most unpopular vice president in history and he may be the most unpopular person in America right now, so, yes, where else could he go?" Hawkins said.

"It doesn't surprise me the White House called back and wondered if BYU would take him. I seriously doubt he'd be welcome at a lot of other universities."

Cheney's job approval ratings ranged from 28 percent to 36 percent in national polls done in the past two weeks by Gallup and Time.

Psychoanalyzing Barack Obama
Steven M. Warshawsky
Steve Sailor, who writes for The American Conservative and VDARE.com, has written a series of pieces about Barack Obama that make fascinating reading, as they explore the reality behind the notion that Obama "transcends" race and, in Jonathan Alter's words, offers voters an "historic and possibly redemptive" choice for president.

In a feature artticle in the current edition of TAC, Sailor carefully examines what Obama wrote in his best-selling autobiography Dreams From My Father: A Story Of Race And Inheritance. Sailor lays bare the race-consciousness at the center of Obama's worldview. This race-consciousness expresses itself most poignantly in Obama's self-identification with his "black" heritage (his father was Kenyan) and not-so-subtle rejection of his "white" heritage (his mother was a Caucasian from Kansas).

What effects this psychological dynamic may have on Obama's performance as president (assuming he were elected) is far from clear, of course, but it is important for voters to appreciate the issues Obama himself raises in his book (which, Sailor notes, few people appear to have read, despite many buyers).

Ted Haggard's Hell on Earth

According to Bishop Carlton Pearson, Ted Haggard isn't going to hell. He's already in hell.

Pearson, 53, was a leading light of the contemporary Pentecostal -- or charismatic -- movement until he rejected the concept of hell a few years ago. Hell, Pearson says, does not exist. Salvation by Jesus, he maintains, is not required for eternal grace. Everyone is saved. The only hell is right here on earth, a creation of fundamentalism, scriptural literalism and the terror that fills the hearts of fundamentalists at each impure thought, each shameful moment of sexual longing. "I'm not trying to convert anybody," Pearson told me recently. "I'm just trying to convince everybody that they're loved. Ultimately redeemed, whoever they are." Pearson calls the notion that a supposedly merciful God would torture people in an eternal hell "absurd and vulgar." It's no wonder then, that Pearson was roundly condemned by his peers, including the pre-scandal Haggard, for his radical views. Haggard, Pearson said, "denounced me and said, 'hell is a physical place.' ... Well, he's right, and he's in that hell right now."

I wish they would just tell us what's going on and whether we can do anything about it. The teasing just hurts. If they don't feel they can say anything, I'd rather they didn't joke about it - just tell me if something is going on.

Federal police arrested 7 people, including 4 veterans, at a peace protest at Representative Doris Matsui's office on Thursday.

by Dan Bacher

Sacramento area peace advocates ended their historic 52-day “peace-in” at the office of Representative Doris Matsui (D-Sacramento) on March 22 with seven people – including four veterans - getting arrested by federal officers as they attempted to read the names of people killed during the Iraq war and occupation.

Cres Vellucci, a member of Veterans for Peace and one of those arrested, said that Rep. Matsui may be subpoenaed as a result of the arrests late Thursday. The seven were arrested for refusing to obey the orders of a federal police officer and released on their own recognizance. The trial date has not been set.

The other veterans arrested were John Reiger, George Main and Dan Delaney. Scott Verhoef Sheila Laracy, and C.T. Weber were also arrested by the Federal Protective Service.

The arrests came at the end of eight hours of reading of the names of the more than 3,200 U.S. war dead and thousands of Iraqis inside Matsui's office in a final attempt to change Matsui’s mind on voting for the $120 million supplemental funding bill to continue the Iraq war and occupation. Although Matsui repeatedly has stated she is opposed to the war, she continues to support more funding for the war.

“It is so disappointing that Rep. Matsui was given so many opportunities to do the right thing over the past 2-1/2 months – and refused,” said George Main, president of the Sacramento Chapter of Veterans for Peace and a member of the steering committee for Sacramento for Democracy, minutes after he was released from federal custody. “All I’ve heard from her is the same old line that she is supporting the troops by continuing war funding – even though voting for more funding will result only in more dead and wounded. I felt it was time to make a statement.”

Peace advocates felt a particular sense of urgency on the last day of the protest since the House is expected to vote Friday on $100 billion new war funding bill. Matsui says she will vote for more war monies and a Rep. Nancy Pelosi amendment (HR 1591) that would extend the war by at least 18 more months or more.

GOP Rep. Sam Johnson (R-TX) says we could have won Vietnam if we'd just stayed longer

I'm sorry, but that's crazy talk. This is the Republicans' hero? A guy who thinks the lesson of Vietnam is that we just didn't stay long enough? He's literally on the House floor right now saying that the only reason we lost Vietnam is because the Congress cut funding to the war. Yeah, because Vietnam was going so well before that, Congressman.

The Republicans have simply lost their minds. Their now arguing that Iraq is like Vietnam. And that we could have won in Vietnam just like we can still win in Iraq.

Sam Johnson seems sincere enough, but he's absolutely cuckoo. If I were the Democrats, I'd let him keep talking. The guy is nuts. And oh yeah, by the way, what did Sam Johnson or any of the Republicans do to help our veterans who are sitting in military hospitals with maggots literally crawling in their open bed sores? Hell of a way to support the troops, Mr. Johnson. Republicans like you let our troops down for years while you were in the majority, let them sleep in their own urine, let them become infested with maggots, and now you have the nerve to pretend to speak on behalf of our troops?

You people aren't just crazy, you're sick.

Charged With Leading Ethics Inquiry Into Firings, Cornyn ‘Doesn’t See What Hubbub Is All About’

Nearly two weeks ago, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) called for a Senate ethics inquiry into whether Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM) improperly pressured U.S. Attorney David Iglesias to bring indictments in an ongoing probe of a Democrat shortly before the November elections.

The Senate Ethics Manual says it is “the general advice” of the Ethics Committee that senators should refrain from intervening in pending legal actions. Domenici quickly hired former Rep. Duke Cunningham’s (R-CA) lawyer to defend him.

According to committee rules, an automatic preliminary inquiry was triggered once CREW issued its sworn complaint. But it’s doubtful that the inquiry will get a fair shake. Why? Because the ranking member of the Senate Ethics Committee is Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX).

O’Donnell Tells Leahy: ‘You’re Going To Get The Truth From Karl Rove’

The White House refuses to allow Karl Rove and other top aides to testify about the administration’s prosecutor purge. Instead, it has offered closed door “interviews” with no oath and no transcript. The House and Senate Judiciary Committees have rejected that offer and authorized subpoenas of White House officials.

Borrowing the White House’s talking points, MSNBC’s Norah O’Donnell pestered Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) about why he was insisting on “putting on a show trial.” She told him the White House offer was perfectly acceptable. “You’re going to get the truth from Karl Rove. What’s wrong with that?” Later, O’Donnell asserted, “You don’t trust the White House. The bottom line, you don’t trust the White House.” Watch it:

LINK

As Leahy told O’Donnell, this is about more than whether or not the Senate trusts the White House. “We want to have hearings the way this country has had hearing for over 200 years,” Leahy stated. “Do it open. Do it under oath. And then let the American people decide.”

“The U.S. military’s faulty war plans and insufficient troops in Iraq left thousands and possibly millions of tons of conventional munitions unsecured or in the hands of insurgent groups after the 2003 invasion — allowing widespread looting of weapons and explosives used to make roadside bombs that cause the bulk of U.S. casualties,” according to a Government Accountability Office report released yesterday.

Actually I was thinking of the financial hemorrhaging that has been taking place since Air America went on the air. But the same can be said for the Iraq War. Both ventures have been kept alive though the infusion of cash not normally channeled into project with such diminishing return.

The difference of course being that the new owners have the power the change the course and that change should be expected. As with the war in Iraq, the end is inevitable, only the timing is in question.

This from DCCC:

Breaking News: Today, the House of Representatives passed the U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Health and Iraq Accountability Act, the Democrats' plan to support our troops, take care of our veterans, and end the war in Iraq.

Dear Catharine,

Democrats and the American people insist on a New Direction in Iraq. Today marks a significant step. The House of Representatives passed critical legislation to support our troops, take care of our veterans, and end the war in Iraq. As Speaker Nancy Pelosi said yesterday, the choice was clear: support President Bush's open-ended commitment in Iraq or support a new direction in Iraq. With Speaker Pelosi's strong leadership, Democrats fought to answer the call of the American people and today we delivered.

Democrats have brought accountability and oversight back to the Congress and that is truly because of your continued support. We have the power to hold President Bush accountable for the first time in six years because you helped win a Majority in the House -- while Republicans continue to offer more of the same, voting to stay the course in Iraq. Thousands of people in the DCCC community took action and became citizen co-sponsors of our plan and its passage speaks to the power of your voice. Thank you, we couldn't have done this without you.

The U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Health, and Iraq Accountability Act will:

Ensure that U.S. troops have the resources and training they need;
Improve healthcare for returning service members and veterans;
Direct more resources to the war against al-Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan;
Require Iraqis to take control of Iraq - by meeting the security, political and economic benchmarks established by President Bush; and,
Set a timeline for ending U.S. participation in Iraq's civil war.

In recent weeks, in the wake of the Academy Award nomination and subsequent victory for former Vice President Al Gore's film, An Inconvenient Truth (Paramount Classics, May 2006), in the best documentary feature category, followed by his testimony in both the House and Senate on global warming, the media have resuscitated old smears and falsehoods that may have been decisive in the 2000 presidential campaign. In some cases, media figures have retooled these attacks to apply to his work on global warming, and, in others, have come up with entirely new smears.

Generally speaking, paratheatre refers to private, non-performance oriented processes of group dynamics usually involving rigorous physical and vocal techniques for accessing, embodying and and expressing the internal landscape. Without an audience, the focus shifts away from the external "pressures to perform" and onto the self-created pressures of performing actions with enough commitment to transform the instrument of the actor.

A term initially proposed by Wilhelm Reich for the psychological syndrome marked by irrational insistence on beliefs and ideas that depend on dissociation of mind from body. Reich also refered to it as "the neurotic character in destructive action on the social scene". Though this dissociation has plagued humanity for many centuries, it wasn’t until the “The Age of Reason” that the abstract intellect was exalted to god-like status with Newton’s theories and Descartes’ “Meditations”.

The current era of emotional plague has accelerated via the massive collective projection of physical, emotional and sexual energy into mental, or virtual, mediums such as the internet, VR technology, video games, mass media advertising, and television. If emotional plague is caused by disassociating mind from body, its confusion can be easily maintained by mistaking the virtual for the real, by taking an image or an idea of a reality for the reality itself; eating the menu instead of the meal, etc.

What is real and what is an illusion ? Do you know ? Do you care ? If you don’t know and can say so, you are probably waking up. If you already know what’s real, dare to live by it; your example acts as a signal to kindred souls in the struggle. If you don't care, don't bother; you are probably fast asleep. The emotional plague doesn’t care either and you will soon be assimilated, if you have not already been consumed.

Gregory omitted White House interview preconditions for a third time

http://mediamatters.org/items/200703230005

On the March 23 edition of NBC's Today, NBC News chief White House correspondent David Gregory -- for the third time in four days -- omitted the preconditions stipulated by the Bush administration for allowing White House senior adviser Karl Rove, former White House counsel Harriet Miers, and other current and former staff to be interviewed by congressional committees investigating the firing of eight U.S. attorneys. Gregory also reported that, according to White House press secretary Tony Snow, the White House "signaled some room for compromise" on these preconditions, apparently ignoring Snow's March 22 statement that the administration is "not negotiating. This is our offer."

The DOD regulations make clear that the White House cannot use uniformed military, active duty or veterans, as props in political events. But that's what Bush did today when he used current or former troops in uniform as window dressing for his political press conference attacking the Democrats as un-American. ...

So, no one can wear the uniforms at political events, which this most certainly was, vets can't wear them at anything short of funerals, weddings and parades, and medal of honor winners can wear them at more events, but still not at political events, which this was.

But the Republicans only like our veterans when they can use them, and when they have 4 limbs.

another baseless right-wing slur with no substance. it's hard to have intelligent debate on the issues when you're dealing with folks whose only tactic is name-calling. thank goodness for folks like you and thom hartmann. keep it up.

PS. i want to hear more from Senator Katherine Harris! she's hawt.

Myths and falsehoods about global warming

http://mediamatters.org/items/200703230007

Since the release of the film An Inconvenient Truth (Paramount Classics, May 2006) featuring former Vice President Al Gore, the issue of global warming has received increased attention in the popular media. Yet numerous media figures have distorted the scientific studies they cite, frequently drawing criticism from the scientists who produced the studies. And while there is scientific consensus on many issues related to global warming, media figures have advanced several false, misleading, or baseless claims about the causes and seriousness of the crisis:

Government seeks to reduce Abramoff sentence
Prosecutors reward disgraced lobbyist for cooperation with investigators

By Joel Seidman
NBC News producer
NBC News
Updated: 12:35 p.m. CT March 23, 2007
WASHINGTON - Disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, currently serving a five-and-a-half-year sentence for his conviction in the SunCruz Casinos gambling boat fraud case, may get his sentenced reduced because of his continued cooperation with investigators.

In a separate case, Abramoff pled guilty to fraud, tax evasion and conspiracy to bribe public officials in Washington, D.C. He has yet to be sentenced.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Schwartz, in court papers filed in Miami this week, took the first steps in seeking a reduction in Abramoff's sentence. The prosecutor wrote in a filing to U.S. District Judge Paul Huck that the move is "based upon the defendant having provided substantial assistance to the government in the investigation and/or prosecution of others."

Leahy hints at more 'Attorneygate' whistleblowers
03/23/2007 @ 10:30 am
Filed by David Edwards and Ron Brynaert

Thursday night on MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee hinted that he might have more "whistleblowers" set to testify on the ongoing US Attorneys scandal, which some have dubbed "Attorneygate."

In the interview with Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Olbermann referred to comments made previously on the show by Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) about "really angry career employees," then asked if the Committee had any "rabbits in hats."

"He said that he hoped that the White House would let Mr. Rove and the others testify on the record," Olbermann related to Leahy. "If they did not, there really were enough really angry career employees, prosecutors in the Justice Department who would ensure that this information, the actual facts of the case would get out anyway."

Olbermann continued, "I'm wondering what we should infer from that. Are there rabbits in hats that you have that we don't know about?"

Obey Hits Back Against Washington Post’s Smearing of House Iraq Bill »
This afternoon, the House passed the U.S. Troops Readiness, Veterans’ Health and Iraq Accountability Act. The bill expands funding for veterans health care, requires the Iraqi government to meet certain benchmarks of progress, and calls for the strategic redeployment of all U.S. troops out of Iraq by 2008.

This morning, the Washington Post editorial board, who in 2003 called the Iraq War “an operation essential to American security,” smeared the House plan as “an unconditional retreat.”

Rep. Dave Obey (D-WI) responded on the House floor. “Let me submit to you the problem we have today is not that we didn’t listen enough to people like the Washington Post,” Obey said. “It’s that we listened too much.” Obey concluded, “And I would say one thing, those of us who voted against the war in the first place wouldn’t have nearly as hard a time getting us out of the war if people like The Washington Post … hadn’t supported going into that stupid war in the first place.”

The Delegation will be Formed by Seven Comandantas, Seven Comandates and a Subcomandante

By Indigenous Revolutionary Clandestine Committee – General Command
Zapatista Army of National Liberation

March 22, 2007

The EZLN, by means of their Sixth Commission, announces to the compañeras and compañeros adherents to the Sixth Declaration and the Other Campaign, to the Zezta International and to the people of Mexico and the world the following:

First: Due to the new offensive against the Zapatista communities carried out by paramilitaries affiliated with the PRI and PRD and supported by the state [Democratic Revolution Party] and federal [National Action Party] governments, the Zapatista leadership has had to make some adjustments that will allow continued protection of our communities and at the same time fulfilling their commitments with the Other Campaign.

We will resist the attacks of the paramilitaries in an organized and civil form. With the mobilization of our communities and calling on the solidarity support of the honest people of Mexico and the entire world, we will continue to link our Zapatista struggle for indigenous rights and culture with other Indian peoples of Mexico and the American continent, and with the struggles maintained by organizations, groups, collectives, families and individuals of the Other Campaign in our country.

Second: Furthermore, over the next few days, the Sixth Commission of the EZLN will initiate the second stage of its direct participation in the Other Campaign in Mexico with a delegation consisting of seven comandantas, seven commandantes and one subcomandante.

For their participation in this second stage the Sixth Commission of the EZLN has established a sort of territorial distribution in zones and regions. The different delegations of the Sixth Commission will spread out throughout the entire country, during this year of 2007, to work jointly with the organizations, groups, collectives, families and individuals adhering to the Sixth Declaration.

Third: Simultaneously, in addition to their territorial distribution, the Sixth Commission will have a special delegation that will participate directly in the works undertaken by the compañeros and compañeras of the National Indigenous Congress with the Indian peoples of Mexico.

A delegation from the Sixth Commission will also be present in the international encampment “The Indigenous Peoples in Defense of Life, Culture and Nature: Below and to the Left,” in the territory of the indigenous Cucupá people in the community of El Mayor in Baja California, Mexico, in the months of April and May of this year.

Fourth: This second stage will begin on March 25, 2007 and will start off with the concentration of the delegates in the city of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas. There, together with NGO’s adherent to the Otra in Chiapas, an international solidarity campaign with the Zapatista indigenous communities and in defense of indigenous autonomy will be announced.

Afterwards they will set off to install the delegations of the Sixth Commission to the National Indigenous Congress and the Northern Zone of Mexico. These delegations will be working with the compañeros and compañeras of the Otra in the states of that part of our country until the beginning of June 2007. In the second half of the year, the delegations in the center and southern zones of Mexico will be installed.

Fifth: A delegation of the Sixth Commission will also participate in the mobilizations marking the first anniversary of the repression against the noble people of Atenco, the Popular Front in Defense of the Land (FPDT) and the Other Campaign, demanding the freedom of our compañeros and compañeras prisoners in the prisons of Texcoco, Santiaguito and La Palma, which will take place in several places of the other national and international geography, on May 3, 4 and 5, 2007.

Sixth: In spite of the attacks, silences and contempt, the EZLN will carry on with the Sixth Declaration of the Selva Lacandona, and, in doing so, demand:

FREEDOM AND JUSTICE FOR ATENCO!

FREEDOM AND JUSTICE FOR OAXACA!

From the mountains of the Mexican Southeast.
For the Indigenous Revolutionary Clandestine Committee – General Command of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation

HOUSE GIVES BUSH $124 BILLION ABOVE HIS FAKE BUDGET AND TELLS HIM TO END IRAQ WAR BY AUGUST 2008

There were 44 roll calls in the House between October 10, 2002 (the 4 votes to authorize the use of force in Iraq) and May 25, 2005. There were only 4 Democrats who heroically voted against Bush on every single roll call-- Raul Grijalva (AZ), Maurice Hinchey (NY), James McGovern (MA) and Donald Payne (NJ). They score 100. There were 101 Republicans who voted with Bush on every single Iraq-related bill. That is the very definition of "rubber stamp Republican." Each of those shameless Republican whores scored a zero.

UF faculty to Bush: No honorary degree

By JACK STRIPLING
Sun staff writer

The self-styled "education governor" won't likely be getting a sheepskin from the University of Florida anytime soon.

In a move that UF President Bernie Machen called a "horrible mistake," UF's Faculty Senate voted Thursday against granting former Gov. Jeb Bush an honorary degree.

After some faculty expressed concern about Bush's record in higher education, the Senate voted 38-28 to deny him the degree.

Kathleen Price, associate dean of library and technology in UF's Levin College of Law, was among those who spoke in opposition to awarding the degree.

"I really don't feel this is a person who has been a supporter of UF," Price told The Sun after the vote.

Price criticized Bush for allowing the approval of three new medical schools during his tenure, a move that she says has "diluted those resources and hurt the University of Florida in each instance."

She also said Bush's politically motivated decisions about university governance were harmful to the state.

We Can't Make it Here"
Lyrics

Vietnam Vet with a cardboard sign
Sitting there by the left turn line
Flag on the wheelchair flapping in the breeze
One leg missing, both hands free
No one's paying much mind to him
The V.A. budget's stretched so thin
And there's more comin' home from the Mideast war
We can't make it here anymore

That big ol' building was the textile mill
It fed our kids and it paid our bills
But they turned us out and they closed the doors
We can't make it here anymore

See all those pallets piled up on the loading dock
They're just gonna set there till they rot
'Cause there's nothing to ship, nothing to pack
Just busted concrete and rusted tracks
Empty storefronts around the square
There's a needle in the gutter and glass everywhere
You don't come down here 'less you're looking to score
We can't make it here anymore

The bar's still open but man it's slow
The tip jar's light and the register's low
The bartender don't have much to say
The regular crowd gets thinner each day

Some have maxed out all their credit cards
Some are working two jobs and living in cars
Minimum wage won't pay for a roof, won't pay for a drink
If you gotta have proof just try it yourself Mr. CEO
See how far 5.15 an hour will go
Take a part time job at one of your stores
Bet you can't make it here anymore

High school girl with a bourgeois dream
Just like the pictures in the magazine
She found on the floor of the laundromat
A woman with kids can forget all that
If she comes up pregnant what'll she do
Forget the career, forget about school
Can she live on faith? live on hope?
High on Jesus or hooked on dope
When it's way too late to just say no
You can't make it here anymore

Now I'm stocking shirts in the Wal-Mart store
Just like the ones we made before
'Cept this one came from Singapore
I guess we can't make it here anymore

Should I hate a people for the shade of their skin
Or the shape of their eyes or the shape I'm in
Should I hate 'em for having our jobs today
No I hate the men sent the jobs away
I can see them all now, they haunt my dreams
All lily white and squeaky clean
They've never known want, they'll never know need
Their sh@# don't stink and their kids won't bleed
Their kids won't bleed in the da$% little war
And we can't make it here anymore

Will work for food
Will die for oil
Will kill for power and to us the spoils
The billionaires get to pay less tax
The working poor get to fall through the cracks
Let 'em eat jellybeans let 'em eat cake
Let 'em eat sh$%, whatever it takes
They can join the Air Force, or join the Corps
If they can't make it here anymore

And that's how it is
That's what we got
If the president wants to admit it or not
You can read it in the paper
Read it on the wall
Hear it on the wind
If you're listening at all
Get out of that limo
Look us in the eye
Call us on the cell phone
Tell us all why

In Dayton, Ohio
Or Portland, Maine
Or a cotton gin out on the great high plains
That's done closed down along with the school
And the hospital and the swimming pool
Dust devils dance in the noonday heat
There's rats in the alley
And trash in the street
Gang graffiti on a boxcar door
We can't make it here anymore

Rush To Share Stogies With Schwarzenegger

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared on Rush Limbaugh’s radio show yesterday following an appearance on NBC’s “Today” show in which the former movie star called the Talk host “irrelevant.” This after Limbaugh's claimed Schwarzenegger is a "closet liberal."

When asked by Limbaugh, "Why are you selling out instead of being the true conservative you are?" Schwarzenegger replied, "I'm not selling out. It's just doing work for the people. I can understand where you're coming from ideologically, but when I became governor, I became the people's governor." Limbaugh replied, "Conservatism is the best way to serve the people."

Despite their differences, by the time the segment ended, the pair agreed to get together and smoke a cigar.

On the March 22 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Michael Savage asked his listeners to "put your mind into the mind-set of the enemy. ... I want you to put yourself into the mind-set of the Bedouin, who hates us." He then asked: "What would you think of a country that spends most of its time arguing over whether a man can marry a man and do to each other what is despised by 99.9 percent of humanity from the beginning of time until now." Savage added: "Because make no mistake about it: 99.9 percent of humanity despises that behavior because they do not want to go down that road, and they know it's the road of death." Savage also said: "[T]he lion of the desert says, 'I'd rather die, I'd rather blow myself up than ever see my son Ahmed marrying the other guy's son, Mahmoud, and doing these despicable acts to each other.' " Savage further stated: "And then he sees loud-mouthed, foul-tempered women in high places bossing men around; foul-mouthed, foul-tempered women in high places bossing men around," in reference to Sen. Following the Senate Judiciary Committee's March 22 vote authorizing the use of subpoenas to force on-the-record testimony of White House senior adviser Karl Rove, former White House council Harriet Miers, and other current and former White House officials in the evolving U.S. attorney scandal, several media outlets -- including CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and The Washington Post -- suggested that the vote fell along partisan lines. For instance, on the March 22 edition of MSNBC's Hardball, host Chris Matthews characterized the subpoena vote as the "Democrats' effort to skin Karl Rove alive." In fact, Sen. Charles Grassley (IA), a Republican, went on record as having voted in favor of authorizing subpoenas.

Gonzales: Don't Blame Me, Blame Bush
By Paul Kiel - March 23, 2007, 5:59 PM
President Bush shut down an internal Justice Department investigation into the administration's warrantless wiretapping program against the advice of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, according to a letter sent by a senior Justice Department official to Congress yesterday. To Democrats, it's yet another example of why Gonzales should step down.

The investigation, launched in January 2006 by the Department's internal watchdog, the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) -- an office created in the wake of the Watergate scandal to prevent similar abuses by DoJ officials -- would have examined whether Department officials had properly reviewed the legality of the NSA's Terrorist Surveillance Program, which dates back to 2001.

But the probe was shut down when Bush denied investigators the security clearances necessary for the investigation. Such a denial was unprecedented and arbitrary.

Public allegiance to the Republican Party has "plunged" during George W. Bush's presidency, according to a Los Angeles Times report on a recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press.

"The survey, by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, found a 'dramatic shift' in political party identification since 2002, when Republicans and Democrats were at rough parity," report the Times. "Now, 50% of those surveyed identified with or leaned toward Democrats, whereas 35% aligned with Republicans."

And while the unpopularity of the Iraq war and Bush play a storng role in these trends, the survey shows that the public has shifted toward Democrats on a host of other issues, including support for government aid to the disadvantaged, the use of military force, and "traditonal family values."

"Iraq has played a large part; the pushback on the Republican Party has to do with Bush, but there are other things going on here that Republicans will have to contend with," Andrew Kohut, director of the Pew Center, was quoted as saying. "There is a difference in the landscape."

The report adds that the current gap between Republican and Democratic party identification is the largest since Pew began collecting that data in 1990.

The scene -- which was recounted in Congress Daily (sub. only) and confirmed to me by a Hill source -- was a reminder of the strange route House Dems took to passage of this milestone bill. As reported here yesterday, the three key liberal members decided at the last minute to back the bill. But because they wanted to oppose the bill themselves as a matter of conscience because it lacked the tough language enforcing withdrawal that they wanted, they went to other liberal members of the Out of Iraq caucus and let them know that they'd have no problem if they voted for it.

"These three went and got enough other votes to provide a margin of victory beyond their own three No votes," the source says. Thus the standing ovation for them.

FEC Democrats Say Bush Violated Limits

By Matthew Mosk
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, March 23, 2007; A15

The three Democrats on the Federal Election Commission revealed yesterday that they strongly believe President Bush exceeded legal spending limits during the 2004 presidential contest and that his campaign owes the government $40 million.

Their concerns spilled out during a vote to approve an audit of the Bush campaign's finances, which is conducted to make sure the campaign adhered to spending rules after accepting $74.6 million in public money for the 2004 general election.

Republican commissioners defended the way the Bush campaign billed the cost of more than $80 million in television ads, which were the source of the dispute.

The commission by statute comprises three Democrats and three Republicans. Commissioner Michael E. Toner, a Republican, resigned March 14, but the vote was taken before his departure. Because of the deadlock, the objections were recorded in a footnote to the audit but will not result in any sanctions or repayment.

"We had a disagreement on this audit, and it was a doozy," said one of the Democrats, Commissioner Ellen L. Weintraub.

The dispute centered on the use of what the commissioners called "hybrid" ads, which were intended to promote both the president and Republican members of Congress. The Bush campaign argued that it should not bear the full cost of these ads, so it split the tab with the Republican Party.

As a result, only half of the cost would count toward spending limits imposed on the campaign when it agreed to take public funds. Weintraub said the spending limit is an essential part of the agreement candidates make to accept public financing. "Bush-Cheney 2004 took the $74 million, and then they broke the bargain," she said.

Commissioner Hans A. von Spakovsky, a Republican, strongly disagreed. "There was no broken bargain," he said. "There was no violation of the law."

Novak wondered why Waxman, others didn't ask about baseless Plame assertions

http://mediamatters.org/items/200703230014

In his March 22 column, syndicated columnist Robert D. Novak asserted that Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) and the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform failed to ask "pertinent questions" in their March 16 hearing investigating the leak of former CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity. Two of Novak's "pertinent questions" hinged on baseless claims suggesting Plame was not a covert operative "when her identity was revealed." (Novak's use of the passive voice obscured the fact that his own July 14, 2003, column disclosed her identity.) Novak also noted that former Reagan administration deputy assistant attorney general Victoria Toensing testified that Plame was not covert under the Intelligence Identities Protection Act (IIPA) "if only because she was not stationed overseas for the CIA the past five years." But the statutory definition does not provide that the operative must have been "stationed" overseas to qualify as covert; rather, the statute uses different tenses of the verb "serv[e]."

A town full of worthless memories

Salon.com columnist Joe Conason wrote on March 23 of the media's apparent amnesia about Karl Rove's history of lying. Though Rove's previous dishonesty would seem to be quite relevant to coverage of the current controversy over whether he should be placed under oath and his statements transcribed when talking to Congress about the Bush administration's prosecutor scandal, Conason writes, the "porous brainpans of the Washington press corps" seem to have forgotten all about recent history. According to Conason:

The proposal to interview the president's chief political counselor without an oath or even a transcript is absurd for a simple and obvious reason. Yet the White House press corps, despite a long and sometimes testy series of exchanges with [White House press secretary Tony] Snow, is too polite to mention that reason, so let me spell it out as rudely as necessary right here:

Rove is a proven liar who cannot be trusted to tell the truth even when he is under oath, unless and until he is directly threatened with the prospect of prison time. Or has everyone suddenly forgotten his exceedingly narrow escape from criminal indictment for perjury and false statements in the Valerie Plame Wilson investigation? Only after four visits to the grand jury convened by special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald, and a stark warning from Fitzgerald to defense counsel of a possible indictment, did Rove suddenly remember his role in the exposure of Plame as a CIA agent.

Ajata said...

By now the porous brainpans of the Washington press corps not only seem to have excused Rove's leaking and lying about Plame's CIA position, but also to have erased that disgraceful episode from their memories. The president and all his flacks can stand before the public and act as if Rove should be treated like a truthful person whose words can be believed -- and not as someone who lies routinely even in the direst of circumstances. The press secretary Snow can say, without fear of contradiction, that the best way to ascertain the facts about the White House role in the firing of the U.S. attorneys is to interview Rove without benefit of oath or transcript.

Indeed, media coverage of the prosecutor purge has been marked by what seems to be a stunning lack of memory by the political press corps.

Ajata said...

For example, just three weeks ago, Scooter Libby was convicted of perjury, making false statements to investigators, and obstruction of justice. You might think that would come up in coverage of President Bush's unwillingness to allow his top aides to testify before Congress under oath, in public, or in any setting that would involve a permanent, objective record of their comments.

Yet the White House press corps seems to have forgotten all about Libby's conviction -- they haven't asked Tony Snow a single question about it during the daily press briefings since Bush refused to allow Rove and others to testify under oath. A president who just three weeks ago saw one of his top aides convicted of perjury and making false statements to investigators now refuses to allow other aides to testify under oath. And apparently nobody in the White House press corps thinks to ask Tony Snow if that's because Bush is afraid of another of his aides committing perjury -- or whether his refusal to allow a transcript is because he's afraid of them getting caught. Nobody remembers Libby's conviction well enough to ask Snow how the White House can possibly insist that a transcript is unnecessary given Libby's own willingness to lie under oath.

And it isn't just that the question has gone unasked in Snow's press briefings: the Washington Post, New York Times, ABC, CBS, and NBC have all neglected to bring up the Libby conviction in the context of the administration's refusal to allow transcripts or statements under oath.

March 23-25, 2007 -- Yesterday, Senator John Edwards and his wife E lizabeth held a news conference in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and announced that Mrs. Edwards' cancer had returned and metastasized by spreading to her bones. In 2005, this editor had the opportunity to meet Senator Edwards at a Progressive Democratic meeting in Washington, DC. I asked him how Elizabeth was doing and asked him to give her my best. He was genuinely appreciative of the concern -- pointed proof that the Edwards family, which has had its share of tragedies, represents a quality rare in other political families, decency and a commitment to real family values.

As an aside, I mentioned to Edwards that I had penned an OP-ED piece in the Charlotte Observer during the 2004 campaign urging John Kerry to pick him as his Vice Presidential running mate. He recalled the editorial and thanked me for it. I told him not to thank me, emphasizing that I messed up the OP ED completely. After a quizzical look crossed Edwards' face, I said that I should have written it differently: Edwards should have chosen Kerry as his running mate. Edwards got the both the joke and the underlying message.

The vile right-wing reaction to Elizabeth Edwards' cancer by individuals who do not know the first thing about family values was shocking even for their ilk. Rush Limbaugh, whose idea of family values is to fly off to Hispaniola with a pocket full of Viagra and Oxycontin to cavort with immature Dominicanos, said that the Edwards' announcement was a ploy to garner sympathy for his presidential campaign. Limbaugh's filthy, degenerate, and oafish behavior is the reason why he has been through as many wives as those other paragons of GOP family values -- Rudy Giuliani and Newt Gingrich. And who can forget that a few weeks ago, GOP Nazi She-Wolf Ann Coulter called John Edwards a "faggot" before the Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC), a group that counts more closet queens amongst its ranks than the J. Edgar Hoover Fan Club.

Thankfully, the right-wing is slowly hate talking themselves into obscurity.

The Edwards can take solace in the fact that 99 percent of the American people wish them the very best during their latest ordeal. The other one percent -- the phony Christians, neo-con lickspittles, Republican philanderers, and pasty-faced country club conservatives, are as irrelevant as they are putrid.

New emails show that “two months before Bud Cummins was fired as U.S. attorney in Little Rock,” Rove protege Tim Griffin “was maneuvering with the Justice Department to take” Cummins’ place. “Some of the thousands of pages of e-mails released this week underscore the extraordinary planning and effort, at the highest levels of the Justice Department and White House, to secure Griffin a job.” “The evidence runs contrary to assurances from Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales that no such move had been planned.”

Another ousted U.S. prosecutor speaks out. Former Michigan U.S. Attorney Margaret Chiara “said in an interview that a senior Justice Department official had told her that her resignation was necessary to create a slot for ‘an individual they wanted to advance.’ The identity of the likely replacement was not disclosed, she said.”

Documents Show Gonzales Approved Plans to Fire Several U.S. Attorneys

Friday , March 23, 2007

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales approved plans to fire several U.S. attorneys in a November meeting, according to documents released Friday that contradict earlier claims that he was not closely involved in the dismissals.

The Nov. 27 meeting, in which the attorney general and at least five top Justice Department officials participated, focused on a five-step plan for carrying out the firings of the prosecutors, Justice Department officials said late Friday.

There, Gonzales signed off on the plan, which was crafted by his chief of staff, Kyle Sampson. Sampson resigned last week amid a political firestorm surrounding the firings.

The documents indicated that the hour-long morning discussion, held in the attorney general's conference room, was the only time Gonzales met with top aides who decided which prosecutors to fire and how to do it.

Attacking John Edwards: It's Only A Matter of Time

Everyone is being nice now to John Edwards. I haven't heard a single "Breck girl" joke or "faggot" slur in the hours since Edwards and his wife Elizabeth faced the cameras to announce that her breast cancer had returned. And that, yes, he was continuing his campaign for the presidency "despite" his wife's diagnosis.

Despite the implied criticism, no one dared suggest this was the wrong decision. That Edwards might be a selfish husband at best and a callous opportunist at worst. Even the increasingly unhinged Tony Snow, a cancer survivor, paused in the heat of stonewalling Congress to offer a few kind words to Elizabeth Edwards. Something to the effect of, "Hang in there! I'm with you!"

Elizabeth Edwards is a strong person. She survived the loss of her teenage son, Wade, in a car accident. She got diagnosed with breast cancer the day after her husband lost the 2004 election. Personally, if my 16-year-old son were to die in a car wreck, I would crawl into a little hole somewhere and never come out again. Instead Elizabeth Edwards was the personification of grace, optimism and courage. She not only crawled out of her grief but wrote an inspiring, brutally honest account of her painful experiences. Can you imagine Tom DeLay writing a book called "Saving Graces"?

I hope the good will, the niceties, the prayers for John and Elizabeth Edwards continue. I pray they do. But in a political climate where nastiness and name-calling have become epidemic, I have no reason to believe they will. Neither should John and Elizabeth Edwards. It's only a matter of time before the right-wing blogosphere or Rush Limbaugh start throwing around the "C" word, start smearing Edwards for pursuing his presidential dream while his wife has cancer. Accuse him of exploiting her illness for political gain.

When that happens, I have every faith that Elizabeth Edwards will handle it.

Smirking at the jury in Conrad Black's racketeering trial, Eric Sussman, the youthful American prosecutor, stumbled and stuttered on his words.
"Ca... col... cal... I don't know how to say that. Can anyone pronounce it for us?" he asked, gesturing theatrically to a word in one of the former Telegraph owner's typically verbose emails.
Lord Black's defence counsel, Ed Genson, had a stab at it in his gruff midwestern drawl before turning to his client with a weary sigh and asking: "Conrad?" The peer, showing no sign of appreciating the mirth around him, sourly replied: "Calumnies."
