Wednesday: We're Your Safe Haven From Terror...For Three More Days

We're fightin 'em on the air, so you don't have to fight them in person. Today we welcome Italian journalist Carlo Bonini, who's done some great work investigating the forged Niger documents that were instrumental in forging the lies that took us into Iraq. His new book is called, Collusion: International Espionage and the War on Terror. Plus we'll have Christy Harvey from the Center for American Progress and blogger, author, and activist David Sirota.

Are the rants and emails, and letters and phone calls helping?

Will Mark Green allow Maddow to curb stomp Lionel for being a wretched prick?

Are we there yet?

You dumbass. I'm not bitching at how rough it is for us. I am much more worried about the next several generations, and am particularly worried about the so called Third World. Pushing the average citizen of this country further towards that will have a violent reaction.

I don't want the world at my feet, I want the rest of the world to have it's needs met. I can worry about plundering after everyone has the necessities of life.

Who Says They're Gonna Come Back? Sammy does that's who.
Whoever makes you laugh comes back.
Because they tell the truth.

Sometimes you miss them
And sometimes you're sad,
Sometimes you're pissed off
And sometimes you get really mad (like when they cancel my favorite radio show)

But who Says he's gonna come back
Sammy does that's who.
Whoever takes care of you comes

You know I was thinking today, not only is this show awesome in itself, it's also very good for us (at least me) on an individual level, because it makes you want to read all those blogs to stay on top of what Sam's discussing. It's gonna be hard to stay so disciplined when I don't have the daily reminder...

p.s. so happy I don't have to work today, I actually get to watch the Sammy Cam for the first time.

Red Cross: Iraq Is 'Ever-Worsening'

GENEVA - The situation for civilians in Iraq is "ever-worsening," even though security in some places has improved as a result of stepped-up efforts by U.S.-led multinational forces, the international Red Cross said Wednesday.

MAUREEN DOWD: Daddies in a Panic, and Mommy, Too
Washington

The mind reels at the mind.

The Times’s science section devoted itself yesterday to the topic of Desire, the myriad ways in which the human mind causes the body to get turned on.

It now seems that instead of desire leading to arousal, as researchers once believed, arousal may lead to desire.

The brain, as D. H. Lawrence once wrote, is a most important sexual organ, and men and women have extremely varied responses to sexual stimuli.

As Natalie Angier, The Times’s biology expert, noted, research has shown that women differed from men “in the importance they accorded a man’s physical appearance, with many expressing a comparatively greater likelihood of being aroused by evidence of talent or intelligence — say, while watching a man deliver a great speech.”

This could explain why many Republican women are so frustrated. They have been deprived of the bristly excitement of hearing their men on the stump delivering great speeches for quite some time now.

The Daddy Party, sick with desire for a daddy, is like a lost child. John McCain, handcuffed to the Surge, announced yesterday he has the support of Henry Kissinger. Why not just drink poison? As the Boston Globe columnist Joan Vennochi slyly said, “Leave it to Mitt Romney to shoot himself in the foot with a gun he doesn’t own.”

Rudy Giuliani, already haunted by the specters of Bernard Kerik’s corruption and Judy Nathan’s conjugal confusion, yesterday made things worse. He did the same thing John McCain did in South Carolina in 2000, a sickening pander the Arizona senator told “60 Minutes” Sunday that he did “for all the wrong reasons.” As Marc Santora reports from Montgomery, Rudy said he would leave the decision about whether to fly the Confederate flag over the Alabama State Capitol to the people of Alabama.

Even cable news showed little interest in President Bush’s big speech on Iraq yesterday, as he continued to excoriate Democrats for hurting the troops by trying to get an exit strategy, a day after Moktada al-Sadr’s spokesman denounced the Liberator as “the father of evil, Bush” while Sadr thugs burned and shredded American flags and shouted, “Leave, leave occupier.”

Four years ago, the conservative commentator Kate O’Beirne thrilled at the sight of President Bush strutting in his flight suit and mocked Bill Clinton’s doughy thighs, noting, “Women don’t want a guy to feel their pain, they want a guy to clean the gutters.” But on “Meet the Press” Sunday, she sorrowfully admitted that Republicans had lost their national security swagger because of Iraq, and now have “a real brand name problem” and “a competency problem.”

“It used to be people thought they might not much like big government, but they can run it,” she said of her party’s leaders. “Now they seem to like it fine, but not be able to run it at all.” A point underscored by this week’s Time cover: “Why Our Army Is at the Breaking Point.”

As Adam Nagourney and John Broder report in today’s Times, Republican leaders are despondent and jittery as they watch their major candidates strain in sycophantic ways to prove their ideological credentials even as they see W.’s administration and war turning into an ever-tighter noose. Watching the Democrats’ fund-raising advantage with alarm and astonishment, they concede it will be tough to hold the White House.

Mr. Nagourney and Mr. Broder quote Mickey Edwards, a former Republican congressman from Oklahoma who now lectures at Princeton, saying that the party does not have any candidates who are compelling. “I just don’t know,” he adds, “how they can run hard enough or fast enough to escape the gravitational pull of the Bush administration.”

Except for Larry Birkhead, all the “Who’s your daddy?” brio this week belongs to Senator Barack Obama, who told David Letterman he would not be Hillary’s second on a ticket, and who remarkably managed to beat her on primary fund-raising with a more democratic and recyclable pool of donors.

That feat of strength led to the hilarious spectacle of Terry McAuliffe, who had been using the Bush-Cheney line of you’re-with-us-or-agin’-us to try to bully Democratic fat cats into giving solely to Hillary, telling ABC’s Jake Tapper: “Ultimately, forget the money. You’ve got to get the votes. And right now, Hillary wins in that category.”

Like the panic in the Daddy Party, the crazed sputtering in the once-dominant Mommy Camp is something to behold.

Hillary has been wielding Bill as a bludgeon on support and money. If you were ever behind him, you’d better fall into line behind her. But doesn’t that undermine her presentation of herself as a self-reliant feminist aiming to be the first Madame President? If you can only win by leaning so heavily on your man for your muscle, isn’t that a benign form of paternalism?

Iran dismisses doubts about nuclear statement

By Edmund Blair

TEHRAN (Reuters) - A senior Iranian official dismissed on Wednesday doubts about whether Iran had achieved industrial-scale nuclear fuel production and said scepticism about its programme had proved incorrect in the past.

"Maybe they thought we needed more time to reach the industrial stage but due to the efforts of our specialists we have already reached that stage," the deputy head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation, Mohammad Saeedi, said in comments carried by the Iranian state broadcaster's Web site.

Iran declared on Monday it had begun industrial enrichment of uranium, a process the West fears Iran is mastering so that it can make atomic bombs. It also said it had injected uranium gas feedstock into a batch of 3,000 centrifuges it is building.

The announcement marked a shift from experimental enrichment work Iran had been conducting. Tehran insists its nuclear work is to make fuel for power plants not to build bombs.

The GOP has become a cowering, withered party thanks to their beloved W.
by Joe Sudbay (DC) · 4/11/2007 08:22:00 AM ET

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. For the past seven years, we've been subjected to the media buying Karl Rove's theory of GOP dominance. It wasn't so long ago that the Bush swagger awed the GOP and the media. Those days are so over -- according to Republicans themselves -- they are freaking out.

The NY Times reports on the precipitous demise of the GOP. What a bunch of pathetic, whiny losers they've become. That didn't take long:
Republican leaders across the country say they are growing increasingly anxious about their party’s chances of holding the White House, citing public dissatisfaction with President Bush, the political fallout from the war in Iraq and the problems their leading presidential candidates are having generating enthusiasm among conservative voters.

In interviews on Tuesday, the Republicans said they were concerned about signs of despondency among party members and fund-raisers, reflected in polls and the Democratic fund-raising advantage in the first quarter of the year. Many party leaders expressed worry that the party’s presidential candidates faced a tough course without some fundamental shift in the political dynamic.
Bush is destroying the Republican party even faster than he is destroying America.

The Republicans let Bush reign without any challenge or any oversight. Payback's a bitch.

More pet food recalls, CFO sells stock

So now it looks like we could be moving from a FDA scandal to an SEC investigation scandal. Insider trading is generally not very well received by the SEC.

The latest update -- the first to involve its Ontario plant -- comes amid news that the chief financial officer of Menu Foods Income Fund sold nearly half his units in the pet food maker less than three weeks before it announced its massive product recall, according to insider trading reports.

Let's hope the SEC is more serious about their work than the FDA, who seem uninterested in protecting consumers and more occupied with providing shelter to big business.

White House Unable To Find A ‘War Czar’ To Own Bush’s Iraq Failures
The White House has been quietly attempting to appoint a “high-powered czar to oversee the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with authority to issue directions to the Pentagon, the State Department and other agencies.” It hasn’t publicly disclosed the position, which was today reported by the Washington Post, because it hoped to “find someone President Bush can anoint and announce for the post all at once.”

But so far, the White House hasn’t found anyone willing to take the job. At least three retired four-star generals have turned down the White House’s offer, including a key administration ally and escalation proponent:

Retired Army Gen. Jack Keane: Keane is an “influential member of the Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board” who met with President Bush in December and convinced him to send more troops to Iraq. He was a strong opponent of the Iraq Study Group’s recommendations, giving the report an “F” grade and saying, “It’s a cover story to accept defeat.”

Retired Marine Gen. John J. “Jack” Sheehan: Sheehan rejected the offer because he “believes that Vice President Cheney and his hawkish allies remain more powerful within the administration than pragmatists looking for a way out of Iraq.” He stated, “There’s the residue of the Cheney view — ‘We’re going to win, al-Qaeda’s there’ — that justifies anything we did. And then there’s the pragmatist view — how the hell do we get out of Dodge and survive? Unfortunately, the people with the former view are still in the positions of most influence.”

Retired Air Force Gen. Joseph W. Ralston also rejected the position, but refused to comment to the Washington Post.

A war czar can’t fix the Bush administration’s mess in Iraq. As Carlos Pascual, former State Department coordinator of Iraq reconstruction noted, “An individual can’t fix a failed policy. So the key thing is to figure out where the policy is wrong.”

(Kevin Drum has more.)

It's all about the Green.

Where is there a link about Lionel, or was this just word of mouth? I would like to forward this to a blog I read... except it is scanned by news.google so that would actually make it come up in searches, so maybe I shouldn't.

I would much rather have Sam stay around, but give Lionel a chance before you bail on Air America in the AM.

He started in my market and is not an infotainer like Limpbaugh at all. He may have some views that stray from the straight ideology of the left, but he defends his positions well.

Looks like Air America is coming down with a terminal case of Gang-Green.

Lionel's site

It's got links to his WOR site with podcasts, etc. Not exactly a technologically adept host.

Oh, I had a dream that I asked John Edwards for a hug and he said no.

Thanks Sam for your contribution to our great Democracy.

You are a true patriot.

We will be listening on Sunday.

Somebody has to make the sacrifice and listen to Lionel, so that the first time he says something completely racist or sexist we can storm the Greens and get him fired.

Just what AAR (the supposed "left" view) needs... someone whose views stray from the left.!?

This is the beginning of the end of AAR.

I No link Christine, word of mouth from blogger edna ellen poe, who said she listened to it.

I do know that he argues strongly against the ACLU, admires Rush, and dislikes being called liberal or progressive.

He enjoys arguing for arguing's sake, without taking any real position. Self identifies as libertarian.

Let Sam know if you'd listen in over the internt when AAR no longer controls his show. Let him know he has an audience if he wants it!

Sam,

You don't need airwaves to have a "radio" show. Use the internet through the blog, podcasts, streaming audio and video to continue your show.

Use your connections with the major liberal blogs to distribute the new show, keep your connections for your interviews. If you wanted to do it, you could make it work.

I'm watching the Sammy Cam for the first time...I'm even more sure now that you can do a show from your home as long as you could get a good soundboard off ebay! Buy a Mac and get a podcast up. Charge 10 cents a pop, get a link on Kos, Liberal Oasis, C&L, MyDD, Washington Note...

You're audience is already there, and can be done with little capital as you get off the ground. If you announce it now, you have your audience.

Ashton

When Imus is suspended for his comments, is Lionel getting a big fat promotion after calling Rachel THAT? Isnt it rude as hell and actually some sort of hate speech?
Mark Green, Advocate, hired this guy?
Well, I reported it to GLADD...
Maybe some of the gay alliances should look at this...
I dont like hate speech on AAR...if thats where we're going then Im gone....

When Mr. Seder is put in the corner of Sunday, Air America loses me as a listener.

Good luck to the new owners turning a profit with Lionel!

I know Mr. Mark Green from my time living in NYC. From what I know he did good work as the Consumer Advocate. However, he couldn't win an election if he ran unopposed! He is bringing the same electoral proficiency to Air America's ownership.

Russia threatening new cold war over missile defence

Kremlin accuses US of deception on east European interceptor bases

Luke Harding in Moscow
Wednesday April 11, 2007

Russia is preparing its own military response to the US's controversial plans to build a new missile defence system in eastern Europe, according to Kremlin officials, in a move likely to increase fears of a cold war-style arms race.
The Kremlin is considering active counter-measures in response to Washington's decision to base interceptor missiles and radar installations in Poland and the Czech Republic, a move Russia says will change "the world's strategic stability".

The Kremlin has not publicly spelt out its plans. But defence experts said its response is likely to include upgrading its nuclear missile arsenal so that it is harder to shoot down, putting more missiles on mobile launchers, and moving its fleet of nuclear submarines to the north pole, where they are virtually undetectable.
Russia could also bring the new US silos within the range of its Iskander missiles launched potentially from the nearby Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, they add.

In an interview with the Guardian, the Kremlin's chief spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said Moscow felt betrayed by the Pentagon's move. "We were extremely concerned and disappointed. We were never informed in advance about these plans. It brings tremendous change to the strategic balance in Europe, and to the world's strategic stability."

My newest email to management.

I think it is interesting that there are no comments allowed on Mr. Green's statement to all of us yesterday.

Maybe you don't realize the amount of energy and loyalty Sam has showed this station over the years. Many times Air America was 'Sam Seder all the time' radio. He was always there for this concept of what Air America once was. Stabbing a loyal person in the back is always upsetting and it's always wrong.

Sam is not the only one being screwed we the loyal listeners are also being treated horribly. Many of us have been there from the beginning; some have gone so far as to support this station financially. None of us are being considered in this decision. As if all our years of loyalty don't matter.

We have watched the origanal daily hosts all slowly disappear. We were all very excited to hear all these voices say, over the air, things we have expressed ourselves or held deeply within our hearts. We all shared in our own way the ups and downs not only of the station but also of each individual personality we have all come to know.We have watched the inexperienced grow in both talent and knowledge.

We feel betrayed.

We watched Mark and Mike forced out. Chuck banished to a weekend end spot and Mark suffering a similar fate by being given only one hour in the wee morning hours; both being forced to the back of the bus. We're now left with only three, Mark, Randi and Racheal who we are all very worried about after your recent callous actions. This has also left us concerned about the weekend people Chuck, Mike and Bobby and Laura.

There's a lot more going on here than just a simple concern over listening to some show we may have grown accustomed to listening to. A lot more. You have failed to recognize that. We all welcomed you here and now we're feeling sorry, let down and deeply disappointed.

Thanks, sunhine!:)
