Tuesday: The Revolucion Begins
We're counting down the final days of the Sam Seder Show as you know it, and today we're heating up the studio just a bit. The forecast calls for romance, as Sam welcomes his wife Nicole Cattell, who will talk about her new documentary, REVOLUCION: Five Visions, which airs tonight on PBS. Plus we'll have two attorneys-turned-bloggers, Christy Hardin-Smith from Firedog Lake, and Glenn Greenwald from Unclaimed Territory. So open up a nice bottle of champagne, put on something a little more comfortable, and get ready for the Sam Seder Show.

How could this happen?
You're one of the good ones dude ....
We love ya.
Best of luck
I lost the link, but someone quoted AA management as saying they'd get better ratings/make more money with less content (read "more fluff") in the 9-noon timeslot.
That the trouble with you, Sam Seder! You should have known better than to talk about things that matter. What this country needs is less blather about Iraq, more about Anna Nichole Smith!
Morning Sam and Crew!

Venezuela Proposes Organization of Gas Exporting Countries
A gas cartel among gas producing countries, similar to OPEC for oil exporting countries, is on Venezuela's agenda during this week's Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Doha, Qatar. Many gas-exporting countries have expressed interest, but the U.S. Congress has criticized the idea saying that the creation of a cartel would be seen as a "deliberate threat."
Rafael Ramírez, Venezuela’s Minister of Energy and Petroleum, arrived in Qatar yesterday for the GECF meeting, a forum attended by many of the world's natural gas exporters. The forum includes major gas producers such as Russia, Iran, Qatar, Venezuela, and Algeria, which together control 73% of world gas reserves, and 42% of the world's production.
"We are here to support a gas-OPEC. It's a good idea," stated Ramírez upon arriving tat the forum yesterday. "We will discuss the idea," he said.

Moratorium on Free Trade Agreements
At literally minutes to midnight on April 1, the United States signed a free trade agreement (FTA) with South Korean negotiators and rushed it to Congress. Congress now has 90 days to review the Korea, Peru, Colombia, and Panama agreements, before fast track authority expires on June 30.
Any way you look at it, the clock is running out on free trade agreements.

AAR makes another "worst" move possible. Sam, I have listened to you since your debut on MR... you have come so far! I missed your "FUBAR" tour when you stopped here in Portland because I had school that evening, but I hope to catch you on the next tour (?). I will continue to follow your endeavors, but I am once again devastated by another of the network's inept decision (MS, MR, etc.).
Do these people just not understand that they keep craping on the loyalty of their listeners?
As was said last night, Sam: "YOU ARE A CLASS ACT!!!" Be well, and my very best to you and your family.
YOU ROCK, SAM! Don't let the fascists win!

Fidel Castro's Ideas Echoed by World Media
Fidel Castro's latest criticism of the policy being promoted by US President George W. Bush to convert food crops into fuel drew widespread coverage in the global media. Cuba's leader published a new article on the subject on Wednesday entitled The Internationalization of Genocide, Granma daily reported.
Fidel Castro warned about a "colossal waste of cereals for producing fuel," which he said "would serve only to save the rich countries less than 15 percent of what is annually consumed by their voracious automobiles."

It was odd viewing the blog come across live last night the time it was in my part of the world) and then hearing Sam do the show on podcast the next afternoon (my time.) Very deja vu. I'm still bummed about the show's demise. I don't care if Air America goes under now. Randi Rhodes, the only other remaining host who means anything to me, will find a new home like Mike Malloy did, if AAR finally goes down the crapper, as its management keeps pulling the handle harder and harder.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad invited Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others in her delegation that met him in Damascus last week to make a return visit, Rep. Tom Lantos said. “I have every intention of going back,” said Lantos, refusing to back down in the face of heavy criticism from the White House.

Sam, why are you taking such a long break? I have to wait 'til
May? Stay until the end of April.
Sam thanks so much for keeping me up to speed on EVERYTHING over the last 3 years.
See, when your message is true and you present it with humor, you begin to change the mind of Joe Sixpack, & we can't have that!
I guess that means Randi Rhodes is next. She'll be given the coveted high-traffic Saturday 3 AM slot.
I'm really pissed at AAR today.
They must've known about this for awhile, but didn't let Sam announce it until yesterday because they know this is horseshit & want to minimize their exposure to audience wrath.
Protesting teachers bring Argentina to a near standstill
Tens of thousands took to the streets of Buenos Aires and other cities nationwide to protest police brutality and demand the resignation of Neuquen Governor Jorge Sobisch considered politically responsible for the killing. Schools remained closed, public transport halted and banks and many offices shut for a couple of hours.
Chemistry teacher Carlos Fuentealba was killed during a protest over pay after being hit by a tear gas canister fired by police at close range in Neuquen.

Lionel really sucks, AAR management will rue the day they hired, that conspiracy nut lionel. Sam is so funny and well Lionel is funny looking. Sam says he sturds, Lionel sounds like a munkin. Lionel has been on radio forever, and has failed to get any ratings what makes those idiots the greens think he will work any better in this time slot. Mark Green is about a idiot, has he ever succeeded at any thing? I don't it, so why should we be suprised by this move. And finally, we should get used to such collosal mistakes with with Green in charge there will be many more horrible blunders to come.

Wouldn't it be great if we could get you, Maron, Laura Flanders and others to get on Nova M with Malloy - and keep Hartmann, Stephanie Miller and Rachel Maddow (who are heard there now) - and we would have something like the Air America we all hoped for 3 years ago.

I don't have an IM that works with Sam's, could someone ask Sam about Mike Malloy's invitation for Sam to go on Mike's show at Nova M?
Please?
I definitely think they should replace Randi Rhodes with The Scissor Sisters or maybe re-runs of Lionel. Maybe Opie and Andy's replays are available to be played during Thom's slot?
I did, Toni...
I think we all need to go over to the msnbc site and start petitioning for Sam to take over for Imus.

US accused of using neutron bombs
The former commander of Iraq's Republican Guard has accused the US of using non-conventional weapons in its war against the Middle East country.
Saifeddin Fulayh Hassan Taha al-Rawi told Al Jazeera that US forces used neutron and phosphorus bombs during their assault on Baghdad airport before the April 9 capture of the Iraqi capital.
Al-Rawi is one of the most wanted associates of Saddam Hussein, the deposed Iraqi leader, still on the run.
"The enemy used neutron and phosphorus weapons against Baghdad airport... there were bodies burnt to their bones," he said.

US oil services giant Halliburton said Monday it had wrapped up its work commitments in Iran and was no longer conducting any projects in the Islamic republic.
Halliburton announced in January of 2005 that it was shutting-down its Iran operations, but would honor existing "contractual commitments" until they were fulfilled.
"Halliburton announced today that all of its contractual commitments in Iran have been completed and the company is no longer working in Iran," the firm said in a brief statement.
The company, headed by Dick Cheney from 1995 to 2000 before he became vice president, added that its "prior business" in Iran was "clearly permissible under applicable laws and regulations."
Halliburton, which could not be reached for further comment, was involved in at least one contract to drill for gas in Iran in 2005 although the contract was subsequently cancelled by Iran's government.
It had won the contract even though a US law, dating to 1996, threatens sanctions on US and foreign groups that invest over 40 million dollars in Iran's energy sector.
Halliburton might be pulling out of Iran, which has troubled political relations with the United States, but it is boosting its footprint elsewhere in the region.

Air America goes Green; New York family will run network as business, but will ratings improve?

Air America goes Green;
New York family will run network as business, but will ratings improve?
By Matthew Flamm
In the weeks since Air America Radio emerged from bankruptcy, the liberal radio network's new president, Mark Green, has met with reporters, talked with affiliates and, in keeping with his history as political pugilist, taunted Fox News in the blogosphere.
But he has also done something that hasn't been done since Air America launched in spring 2004: hired a vice president of programming to work with the talent.
``He's a guy deeply versed in radio,'' Mr. Green says of veteran talk radio programmer David Bernstein, who starts at the network today.
The new hire is one component of what Mr. Green describes as Air America 2.0, an iteration that began when the network was purchased by real estate investor Stephen Green, Mr. Green's older brother.
Deep pockets
the manhattan-based company will continue to be a home for left-leaning or ``progressive'' talkers and produce 19 hours a day of programming. But according to Mr. Green, the new Air America will be run as a business.
``We can't be influential if we're not profitable,'' says the onetime New York City public advocate and frequent Air America guest host, who has lost races for U.S. senator, mayor and, most recently, attorney general.
Referring to his elder brother's deep pockets and how much money he is willing to invest, Mr. Green says, ``Steve will not be to Air America what [News Corp Chairman] Rupert Murdoch still is to the New York Post.''
The newly constituted Green Family Media can't do much worse than prior owners Progress Media and Piquant, which lost a total of $42 million and were both plagued by fallout from a scandal involving an improper loan from a charity.
Stephen Green, chairman of SL Green Realty Corp. and of Air America, bought it out of bankruptcy for a mere $4.25 million from his pocket; minority partners contributed another $3 million.
The chairman will oversee the business side of the network. The younger brother will put his background in advocacy and liberal politics to use as its public face. He will also be in charge of content and digital strategies.
Another radio veteran, Scott Elberg, who has been with Air America for two years, was named chief operating officer.
Thanks to the bankruptcy, contracts with hosts are being negotiated in line with market rates, in contrast to the $2 million a year that the network's biggest star--and radio novice--Al Franken was paid. He left last month to run for the U.S. Senate from Minnesota. And the workforce of 50 staffers is half the number of a year ago.
The Greens are also benefiting from the millions of dollars that were spent building and promoting Air America.
Expensive model
``there was a huge startup cost of going into barren terrain and establishing that there was an audience for this,'' says Danny Goldberg, a music industry professional who was the network's chief executive for a year. ``[Air America] may not be moving at 100 miles an hour, but it's moving.''
But the company is still founded on an expensive and unwieldy network model: creating a daily lineup of original programming, rather than producing just one or two shows.
``It's hard enough to have a successful show in this business, let alone a [full] lineup,'' says Michael Harrison, editor of the trade magazine Talkers.
Air America's business troubles have taken a toll. The network is down to 70 affiliates from a peak of almost 90, and many of those listed on its Web site carry no more than one show. Most stations mix in talkers from other networks, like the popular progressive Ed Schultz, or carry their own content.
Additionally, Air America is saddled in some markets with underperforming stations. Flagship WWRL-AM in New York, where the network moved last year after losing its lease at WLIB-AM, posted a paltry 0.8 share in the fall, according to Arbitron.
``They've got an uphill battle,'' says Mark Lefkowitz, media director at Furman Roth Advertising, who stopped placing ads on Air America after it left WLIB.
Messrs. Green and Elberg counter that they're rebuilding a New York presence on WWRL. They also insist that the network model can work because Air America has established itself as a brand. ``The name gives us leverage,'' Mr. Green says.
Some critics concede that Air America has been making improvements, in particular by moving popular host Thom Hartman into Mr. Franken's former noon-to-3 p.m. slot. What's more, well-run stations, notably in Portland, Ore., and Seattle, have maintained solid ratings.
Some radio experts say that getting a network launched at all is an accomplishment that should not be underestimated.
``[Air America] is in top markets with top programming and getting an audience,'' says Robert Unmacht of media consulting firm iN3 Partners. ``Now we just have to see if the new folks can run a solid business and keep the product worth listening to.''
No you don't have much of a brand left, Mark Green.

This Imus thing is weird. The weird thing is that NBC, MSNBC, etc. (his own network) is the one that is making the most of this...
Huh?

All this Imus talk makes me think i might have to add him to the roster of 'American Pundit Fighter'

sam just remember you are an above average american and always will be. can i call somebody in the programming dept. to come over next monday at nine to change the dial for me ?
Dear Sam,
Thank you for being my "Info Guru" for the past three years.
A point that I think is being missed in this IMESS debacle is that the media completely dropped the crap that McCain has been spewing. . . McCain dropped off the radar. So what if IMESS is a jerk and deranged. Definitely nothing new. Never could stand to watch or listen to that jerk for more than two seconds. He is an insult.
Plug it in, fire it up, Mr. President
Credit Ford Motor Co. CEO Alan Mulally with saving the leader of the free world from self-immolation.
Mulally told journalists at the New York auto show that he intervened to prevent President Bush from plugging an electrical cord into the hydrogen tank of Ford's hydrogen-electric plug-in hybrid at the White House last week. Ford wanted to give the Commander-in-Chief an actual demonstration of the innovative vehicle, so the automaker arranged for an electrical outlet to be installed on the South Lawn and ran a charging cord to the hybrid. However, as Mulally followed Bush out to the car, he noticed someone had left the cord lying at the rear of the vehicle, near the fuel tank.
"I just thought, 'Oh my goodness!' So, I started walking faster, and the President walked faster and he got to the cord before I did. I violated all the protocols. I touched the President. I grabbed his arm and I moved him up to the front," Mulally said. "I wanted the president to make sure he plugged into the electricity, not into the hydrogen This is all off the record, right?"

Abramoff May Get Reduced Sentence
MSNBC | Joel Seidman | April 10, 2007 09:38 AM
Disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff may be getting out of jail earlier than he expected, NBC News learned on Monday. A federal judge Monday granted the government's request for a new hearing to determine an appropriate reduction in Abramoff's sentence, a reward based on his continued cooperation with investigators in several federal probes.
Abramoff is currently serving a five-and-a-half-year sentence for his conviction in the Florida-based SunCruz Casinos gambling boat fraud case. In Miami, U.S. District Judge Paul Huck granted the request from prosecutors once they told him Abramoff's cooperation in the investigations is fully completed.

thanks, tonid.
Sam, Please, please, please move on from the Imus story. What he said was absolutely deplorable and he should be punished. It is a terrible thing he did and African-Americans and the rest of us are right to be digusted and outraged.
But the only reason this has gotten so huge is because the "media" keeps talking it up. This is what drives me crazy about cable news and talk radio. You guys grab a topic and you keep shaking it like a pit bull long after it's dead!
Stop! Let him make his apologies and let him crawl before the Rutgers women and take his lumps. But man! Move on!
Re: Imus
My objection to Imus' comment is that the Rutgers players are not public figures and should not be subject to these comments. Imus should confine his comments to politicians and other public figures who can take care of themselves. I will leave the consequences to MSNBC and WFAN.
Air America should be careful to criticize anyone considering the anti-religious and anti-evangelical comments by some of the Air America hosts. Same for the anti-Muslim comments on right wing and Christian radio. You are on a slippery slope when you begin talking about firing and suspensions. (Disclosure: I am a progressive Democrat, an agnostic Catholic and a Rutgers graduate).
Hopefully Sammy Cam all week.
Hopefully Maron drops his AAR aversion to join his friend in his hour of need.
Hopefully the charter talent of AAR find a home with the intelligence and the patience and the wherewithal and money to give smart and creative programs the chance to develop and grow and find their audience that we know exists.
Sammy -
I will miss you. However, I will not miss AAR. Lionel?? wtf? Is Mark Green going for that coveted 'stuck in the 1980s' demo?

PBS’s Gwen Ifill speaks out on Imus. Ifill, whom Don Imus once called a “cleaning lady cover[ing] the White House,” writes in the New York Times:
Every time a young black girl shyly approaches me for an autograph or writes or calls or stops me on the street to ask how she can become a journalist, I feel an enormous responsibility. It’s more than simply being a role model. I know I have to be a voice for them as well.
So here’s what this voice has to say for people who cannot grasp the notion of picking on people their own size: This country will only flourish once we consistently learn to applaud and encourage the young people who have to work harder just to achieve balance on the unequal playing field.
Let’s see if we can manage to build them up and reward them, rather than opting for the cheapest, easiest, most despicable shots.

Look, the right to freedom of expression is not just supposed to cover the kind of expression most people like. If Imus is a racist idiot, he has the right to be one. Firing him is just economic totalitarianism, with companies using their power over someone's income to stifle their speech. "Progressives" who call for him to be fired are just the flip side of the Bushies with their "First Amendment Zones." IF you don't like what he says, change the channel, dude. I don't like to listen to Imus, so I don't. It's that easy.

Hi gang, Sammy, I'm pulling for you my friend.
Don't let these AAR clowns pin you down with a contract for Sundays not allowing you to take other radio opportunities. I am sure you would be welcome over at Nova M.
I punished AAR for firing Malloy by cancelling my Premium membership last year. I don't miss it. Now I am probably going to have to stop listening to AAR altogether (except for sundays) because these Green characters seem to think they have a giant pool of liberal radio talent and people with more chops than Sam. Sam should have his own show based on work ethic alone. I can't count the number of times he propped up the network during troubled times in addition to hosting his own show and carrying MRR during the long Garofalo absences.
I am going to hang on just to see what these new owners have in line. It had better be good, otherwise. I have no qualms about quitting this stream and streaming The Quake and KPHX instead.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The White House is being accused of improperly trying to hide e-mails about government business by using unofficial e-mail accounts.
Congressional investigators say they found communications on one account from top White House aides about official matters, like the December firings of eight U.S. attorneys.
Those e-mails were discovered on a Republican National Committee e-mail domain called gwb43.com. That domain is not part of the official White House communication system.
The Presidential Records Act, passed during the Nixon administration, requires the preservation of all official records of and about the president.
A White House spokesman defended the use of outside e-mail accounts as an appropriate method of separating official business from political campaign work.
But the use of those accounts by officials discussing the firings -- and one from now-imprisoned lobbyist Jack Abramoff -- have led a liberal watchdog group to accuse administration of trying to skirt the law governing preservation of presidential records.
"They wanted to make sure that no record could ever be found of what they were really up to in the White House," Melanie Sloan, executive director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, told CNN.
Rep. Henry Waxman, the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, has sent letters to the RNC and the former head of the Bush-Cheney re-election campaign, arguing that outside e-mails are subject to the act.

Greetings:
Look! Imus is a notorious racist. He has made these type of statements before. Frankly, I'm not shock at the passive behavior of the African Americans who called Sam. If you notice, they were males. This is the same behavior of black males who listen to Howard Stern. Why? Because they love the misogynistic theme more. Trashing women is the draw.
As I have posted before, The Black Commentator did an article on Imus on November 10, 2005. Here is an excerpt:
"Don Imus is also very lucky. He masquerades as a political commentator for MSNBC, a network that clearly isn’t concerned about reporting any real news. For years Imus has made blatantly racist remarks, some directed at all black people, others directed at any black person who rises above his or her station and manages to make more money than he does".

Dear Mr. Green:
You're "pleased" to be demoting Sam Seder to a 3-hr Sunday show?
Well, I'm not pleased at all. In fact, I'm very displeased over your bone-headed move to replace Sam w/ that mush-mouthed fluffer, LIONEL.
You're ruining AAR, Mark. I wonder why? Gettin' a little heat from the AIPAC/JDL/Likudnic boys? Hillary & the DLC/DNC boys givin' ya a little shit? Those corporate dems whisperin' in your ear again, Mark?

Well, this liberal/progressive listener most assuredly ain't gonna follow. And FYI, it'll be Nova M all the time for me from now on &, hopefully, Sam will wind up on Nova M with his own show.

Oops, I mean premarital sex.
I unsubscribed from the newsletter when I got it this morning. I have two email addresses linked to AAR from over the years, and I got two newletters. I won't be getting another one.

George W Bush: The Rise & Fall of a Tyrant
Bush has carefully, deliberately, and effectively enshrined The Global War on Terror in the American psyche
It is the centerpiece of his presidency, and he never tires of describing himself as a "war president"
He claims no prouder achievement
Hitler's ascendancy and the destruction of German democracy have frightening parallels with contemporary affairs in America
In particular, the erosion of American democracy
The uncanny, detailed similarities between the personalities and behavior of Adolph Hitler and George W. Bush are hair-raising.
Hitler succeeded because the German people were complacent. Just as Americans are today.
To corroborate this, here is a historical look at the Bush presidency. Or is it?

Who is this "Lionel" character?
Petition Says Southern Methodist University Attempts to Silence Faculty Who Protest Bush Partisan Institute
by Susanne Johnson
A new online petition charges that administrators at Southern Methodist University (SMU) have been attempting to silence faculty protest against the politically partisan institute that George W. Bush seeks to include in his presidential library complex. The petition invites faculty members and teachers everywhere to sign in support of the SMU faculty protesters, and in dissent against the Bush institute.
Posted April 7, the petition reports that SMU’s interim Provost has blasted faculty members for resisting the institute, for speaking to the press, for circulating petitions, and for not relying strictly and only on the Faculty Senate to voice concerns.
In addition, it claims that SMU’s President attempts to intimidate faculty members into silence by saying that if they protest the institute they will cause the university to lose the library, along with the loyalty of disappointed mega-donors.
Entitled "Books, Not Bombs: Say No to Bush Political Institute," the petition says it borrows language directly from another online petition launched April 5 by a group of 120 faculty members at SMU--formulated as an "Open Letter" that asks the president and trustees to decline the institute.

Good Idea I unscubsribed to the Newsletter this morning also. I hope Sam moves. I don't want to listen to AAR at all anymore. Lional is like Alan Colmes. I am so disgusted.
eya 60th!

corporate compromise blatherer.
Sam the Man!
First order of business: LIONEL?!
Give...me...a... break. Well, it could have been worse, I guess. (How long do you think it will be before Mark Green puts himself into the game?!)
I'm going back to public radio (WNYC here in New York.) from 9-12 every morning and may or may not be back at 12 for Thom, depending on what Leonard Lopate's got going on from 12-2 PM. (My office is in my home and I have the radio on in the background all day long.)
I haven't lsitened to WNYC during the day since Air America came on the air, Sam, but enough's enough.
I'll be listening to you on Sunday afternoons, and wherever else you may go on the radio, I'm there.
Second order of business: Imus.
I'm probably older than most of your audience, Sammy, and I was an Imus listener for many, many years, going back to 1971, when I was in college and Imus first came to New York radio.
I can tell you that dopey racist comments by Imus are nothing new. Indeed, the first time I ever heard of Imus was back in 1969-70 when he was still a shock jock in Cleveland.
A friend of mine from there told me about this very funny, very outrageous guy on the radio, "Imus in the Morning".
In particular, he told me about the time Imus read a letter on the air purporting to be from parents appealing to their runaway daughter to return home. The alleged letter ended with "and we forgive you for sleeping with the colored man." Caused quite a stir in Cleveland, my friend told me. In fact, I seem to recall my friend telling me that Imus was suspended for that episode as well.
I haven't listened to Imus for several years now, but I won't bore you with my reasons.
Having listened to Imus on and off for 30+ years, though, I will say that I do not think his career should be ended over his latest idiocy.
First, it's a First Amendment issue. What Imus said was stupid and hurtful, but it in no way constitutes hate speech as I understand it to be. Imus is not inciting hatred, violence or intolerance here. He's being a jerk. Period.
You can't take away a guy's livelihood just because he said something stupid. (We'd all be at risk in that case.)
Second, anyone who "knows" Imus, as his longtime listeners do, knows that the man is not a racist. Imus has always promoted African American politicians, journalists, authors, athletes, actors, singers, musicians and other entertainers on his show.
His show has always featured books and films on African American topics and themes, especially in the area of the civil rights struggle. Listen to his annual Martin Luther King Birthday show some year.
Over the years, Imus has also been very generous with his time and money to African American causes.
If, like I have, you've had the opportunity to listen to Imus's comments, opinions, etc. over the years on the subject of race, civil rights, etc. when he was being serious, you would know that the man is in no way, shape or form a racist.
In fact, I was listening to an African-American journalist on one of the cable news shows last night who pointed out that, following Hurricane Katrina, Imus was one of the first in the media to point out— loudly and often— that the shameful response of the federal government had racist overtones.
Imus is far from perfect, to be sure. He can be self-absorbed (Holy mackeral! A self-absorbed celebrity? THAT's unusual.), egotistical, etc., etc.
He is a self-professed Republican.
Imus is far too cozy with certain politicians, journalists and political operatives and displays a loyalty to them that is both inappropriate and too often undeserved.
Still, my impression of Imus after all these years is that he's a pretty decent guy.
Back to work...
yeah nicki!
The film doesnt appear to be playing here...
Michael William LeBron (born August 26, 1958), popularly known as Lionel, is a nationally syndicated radio talk show host based in New York City. He hosts a three-hour radio talk show six days a week (9 p.m.-midnight ET weekdays, and 5-8 p.m. ET Saturdays, from the studios of WOR 710 AM in New York.
The first two hours of the weekday show are carried live on WOR from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET. Various affiliates carry from one to all three hours of the show, some of them live, others via tape delay.
The weekday show used to start at 10 p.m. ET. WOR moved it to a 9 p.m. start in November 2006, still carrying only the first two hours on WOR's radio signal. The syndication feed from WOR provides all three hours, and then repeats the first hour of the show after the third live hour, for benefit of stations that originally scheduled the live show from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET. Their listeners now hear the last two hours of the show live, followed by the first hour.
Lionel graduated from the Stetson University College of Law and as an attorney worked as both prosecutor and defender. He began his radio career as a host at WFLA 970 AM in his hometown of Tampa, Florida from 1988 to 1994.
For years, Lionel had been a frequent caller to local shows, eventually becoming "a chronic", which is industry vernacular for frequent callers. His notoriety was such that he began resorting to using aliases and different personas to get on the air. His most enduring moniker is in honor of Francis Lionel "Lion" Delbuchi, the character played by Al Pacino in the movie Scarecrow. His calls were so entertaining that WPLP, WFLA's rival station across Tampa Bay, offered him a talk show; Lionel declined, both because WPLP paid very little and because he was afraid it would affect his law career. In the fall of 1988, however, WFLA management called and gave him an unbeatable offer to move behind the microphone, first as a weekend host and soon thereafter as part of the weekday lineup. When he did, he quickly became a ratings success, using a lively mix of humor and current events.
He was hired away by WABC 770 AM, a news-talk New York City when a former ABC network president heard Lionel's show during vacations in Florida and lured him to the Big Apple. As in Tampa, he set ratings records for WABC as its morning-drive host during the mid-1990s.
In the late 1990s, toward the end of his tenure at WABC, Lionel also hosted the CourtTV law show, Snap Judgment. In 2000, Lionel began his national radio show, The Lionel Show. It was originally syndicated by Premiere Radio Networks, but was dropped in 2001. His show was syndicated by independent Rex Broadcasting until 2003, when it was picked up by the WOR Radio Network in New York City.
In 2000 and 2001, in addition to his radio work, Lionel was a morning host on an Internet-based talk radio site, eyada.com. The site suspended operations in 2001, but is still parked.
He has released a comedy album titled You Don't Look Like You Sound and fronted a bluegrass band called Lock 'n' Load.

I think we have to support the Drobny's Nova M. They are the original Air America team anyway. Air America is just an empty name now. I will listen to Sam, and Randi and Thom [when I can], but that is it...
I got a blank email back as my reply to their comments email. I suppose that shows they have nothing good to say for themselves.

If Imus is fired that would give Sam a 6:00 to 10:00 time slot with a simulcast on MSNBC.
Hmmmm....
I'll tell you what, I"m tired of that particular hypocracy. I think the majority of Israelis want peace, and know that it isn't going to happen as long as Palistinians are oppressed.
But the power and the money lies with the oppressors, unfortunately.
By the way, I think Nicki crashed teh Sammy Cam.

Do you know who MSNBC will fire before it fires Don Imus? Chris Matthews AND Keith Olbermann
I can't believe he said that. He expresses those beliefs RARELY.
-------
That's because we aren't allowed to talk about it in America. Weird, because Israelis are allowed to talk about it in Israel.
AIPAC has a stranglehold on any reasonable discussion in this country though.
I can't believe Imus is even on TV. He's like, seriously unattractive. I think he wears the hat to distract from that mug.
Then again, men are allowed to be ugly on tv.
Hey Bobby !
Hire Sam - you have enough money start your own radio / internet / blog show
Oh, wait... he actually technically works for CBS Radio. Whatever.
WE WANT SAMMY!!---------------------------------------->
I think I need some fish oil...
Does anyone know when Sammy's Sunday show happens?
Hello to Bobby Kennedy!
Sam & Nicki,
Great interview and I will be watching tonight!
I cannot begin to express how angry I am about you not illuminating and enlightening my morning each weekday.
Sam, you are the reason that many of the bloggers are what they are today.
You, in turn need to develop your blog and YOU be the "go to" guy. Let's see YOU on the talk shows because you are FAR AND AWAY more eloquent, informed and intelligent than all your competition is.
It also doesn't hurt that you are one handsome guy.
The combination of your movie star looks , your very advanced brain and your enthusiasm is sheer dynamite.
Write more books, develop your blog, get on talk shows - make them want to interview YOU.
You have what it takes to rise out of this adversity higher and stronger than all your competitors (and friends).
Do not neglect taking ADVERTISING on your blog. Remember many of your fans own their own businesses and might see your blog as a great opportunity! (check out blogads.com or other such avenues).
Heck, if I had a business, I'd advertise with you!
I LOVE YOU SAM!
You're like a dear friend that has visited me everyday now for a few years. I'm sticking with you!
Best of luck tonight on your film!
Mary from Long Island
Whew, what a close one ... just cancelled my podcast "Superpass," it'd only been renewed a week. They just closed it down ... my only regret is that I can't listen to today's show or the rest of this week. I just had to get out once I got a smarmy email from Mark Green about dumping Seder.
If somebody could post just the last week to an ALT.BINARIES newsgroup many of us would be much appreciative. - Next to last man overboard
Sam, get a TV show! You are great and could continue the tenor and quality--plus the fun visuals! Best wishes from suburban Chicago!
Hi all. Sam is such a gent.
Sam,
I'm a LONGTIME listener - from the beginning - shortly after Al Franken guested on Howard Stern to introduce this "new" liberal talk radio. I've been a web-streaming listener because, here in central NY, radio is controlled by right wingers - all day, everyday.
Just today I hooked up to your Sammy Cam and WOW. Now I'm a bigger fan! Your wife is HOT, dude. You're a lucky man.
Good luck; I'll miss you.
Any mention of the Sunday show time?
I think we should start an email campaign to Abrams @ MSNBC to cancel Tucker and bring in Sammy!
kennedy laying it down well on the corp media.
Sam getting shuffled off is part of the story
Calm down, everyone.
Just give Lionel a chance!
After all, you might find that you LIKE listening to a host who talks about how much he admires and respects Rush Limbaugh.
You might find that you LIKE listening to a host who thinks the word liberal is an insult, and who rants against the ACLU.
You might find that you LIKE listening to a host dismiss racist actions as "just good clean fun."
If you might like those things, Lionel is your guy.
Green - that should tell you something -
Bobby Kennedy just said - Sam can you baracade yourself into this office. A great person like Bobby says this and they should take heed!
Dan Pashman, I remember the shows you and Brendan did during Hurricane Katrina. You guys were awesome, too.
Tucker what a A-Hole!!Bringing Sammy to take his place would be GREAT!But,any company that hired Tucker in the first place,Can't be That Smart!
Sam - push your OWN blog!
Push your OWN books. Everytime you get a moment, get the url of this blog and your book OUT on the air!
YAY SAMMY!
Shame on you Justin for downing the audio on the Sammycam for the real reason Sam thinks he's being cancelled
Great that Bobby Kennedy popped in and showed his support.
If he's puzzled, then I would say even the new management is doing a bad job of communicating the company's policy, even to their own employees.
I hate to say it, but that is a sign of very bad management/leadership skills.
Sammy getting shuffled off to the Sunday 'Gulag' but still chained to corporate control is what it is.
I read somewhere that Marc Maron is "talking to" HBO. Would HBO venture into radio? or an HBO morning TV show with Sam?
Email,or Call AAR!!Give them hell!!We are sick and tired of it,and are not going to take it Anymore!!
Like Ed Schultz and Stephanie Miller, Lionel rode the coattails of Air America to fame. None of these host are true Progressives. When Lionel's show first aired in Ohio, his regular callers were very conservative New York police officers. As a matter of fact, Lionel has said that the police were justified in shooting Amado Diablo 41 times. His show is mainly a man's show.
Expect this kind of crap from Lionel:
http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2005/05/wartime_lionel.html
Lionel's show originates from WOR-AM here in New York City, but it’s syndicated nationwide. In fact, the radio mega-corporation Clear Channel has been gradually creating new “progressive talk” stations, which feature Air America programming, and Lionel’s show is often tucked into the schedule. Which is strange in a way, because Lionel isn’t really a political talk show host at all.
He makes it clear on his show, he is NOT a liberal. However, he is most certainly a lawyer and an eccentric raconteur with a wacky vocabulary and an acid wit. On the side, he takes on a few stand-up comedy gigs too.
I’ve listened to Lionel for a long time, and traditionally he focuses his quirky intellectual laser beam on legal issues in the news, as well as sex and “news of the weird" kind of stuff. Actually, almost any topic is fair game. If it’s strange, titillating, or pisses him off, he’ll talk about it.
Nicki DID crash the Sammy cam. I tried and couldn't get into the blog, then I couldn't get into the cam.
It even crashed Randi Rhode's board for a few fleeting minutes. I think people went there as a reaction because they couldn't get on to Sam's site.
Hi, Sunshine Jim! I'm off from school this week and I can listen to the last precious days with Sam and the gang. I've called AAR, I've written to AAR, I've emailed. Three generations in my fam listen to him. Who are the Greens looking for???
I haven't a clue who this "Lionel" person is... but, as I said in my email to the Greens, I have no interest in less substance. So, it's back to music in the morning, then Randi and Rachel. It'll be nice to have a Sunday program worth listening to, though.
Best of luck, Sam. Know that I'm holding you to your continued 'promise' of a functioning Sam Seder blog... one day.
bbl~
callin AAR is a waste of time even though we did it.
no responses from AAR.
blank email returns, zero responses from the comment threads and removal of same because there was no support of their policy.
it's a lesson. hope people realise what happened.
eventually this will turn into a horror story unless we can organise and oppose the hugest enemy freedom and free speech has ever had.
Sunshine, I've realized that by following links here and a few other places I get "the news". But people like Sam had a focus or a showcase for some interesting thinkers and writers.
the greens?
well i assume they want complete control of any broadcasting on AAR.
who they are and what they do needs to be explored.
they have a few corporate scams under their belts.
How do I contact Janeane Garofalo? I miss her!!! Big Time! The Show just isnt the same?
I'm going to see Janeane, Marc and Henry Rollins tonight! I'm hoping Sam will show up. I'm tell you all I see. PS. Greens, I'm going with my daughter and niece. They can't wait!
who they are and what they do needs to be explored.

But as a business and Salesman, I understand why they are moving programming to the center..
It is why Hillary moved to the Center..

those are the battle lines.

Why are you going to see them, Mimi? What's going on? Can you ask someone from AA to forward Janeane some mail?
They are oppressed,BY STRANGERS, in their own contry. The power of freedom? The eliberation coalition?Eliberation of who?Shame on them! They said that they go there(the brittish troops) for peace, for freedom ,for eliberation, for civilisation? I wished they made changes, like the jerks we have to listen to in the morning in NYC. The worst. I have to actully drink my morning joe in silence rather than listen to Armstrong Williams and his pathetic sidekick.

Shhhhh! Keep this a secret, 'K?
FREE .mp3 d/l'able podcasts & on-demand re-play streams: Seder, Malloy, Hartman & others.
The dailies are rolled-over every 24-48 hrs (usually), so you have to be no-no-mouse-on-the-spot. But sometimes they're left on for longer. Browse around, capice?
Remember, this is a secret! ; )
*
Laters, kids...busy, busy, busy.
Anonymous, there's a couple of shows at Gramarcy Theater in NYC. It could be a tour? Try going to, gulp, ticketmaster and type in the three names. There must be a link. I heard about it when Marc was on Sam's show about a month ago.
I know Ms. Drobny/NovaMRadio offered a job to MarcMaron but I don't know what happened. I know Ms. Drobny was going to call Sam yesterday/Monday about a possible a job - but I don't know what happened. I've written a number of times to the Greens, Elberg, and the "Dan" dude. I don't want to give up and it sounds like Sam's group doesn't want to give up either. Yeah! I, too, listen to Lionel but he seems like a good dude to listen at night while Sam gives us the news/education that functions best during the daylight hours (when my brain functions best). Keep the faith, Sam. You're good and whatever happens, you'll land on your feet. Takecare, :) :) :) :) ..... Peace.
MIMI,
Would you ask someone from A.A. to forward some mail to Janeane? Please?

Anonymous, I'm as hooked up with "AA" as you. Maybe if you go to Janeane's website, there is sure to be a contact # for you. If I some how end up hanging with her and the thousand other peeps tonight, I'll tell her to check out Sam's blog of today.
eya Mimi,
proud of you for standing up.
it's traditional. shows you care and have some courage.
won't be enough though.
we have to oppose them financially or we get no traction, no change and they ruin the lives of every patriotic supporter of the USA and the constitution.
(what we have left of it. the removal of Habeus Corpus should be an adequate warning of what's in store.)
The guy that is replacing Sam makes it clear that he is NOT a liberal and doesn't believe in such titles (although he says he is a libertarian). I guess there are too many lefties on AAR...
Well, I've never heard of Lionel, but he must be something special if he's #23 on a list headed by Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. Thanks for nothing Mark Green. First my local station abandoned AAR, then XM Radio and now the new owners. I guess the wingnuts were right, there's no place for liberal talk on the airwaves. Money talks and I guess our voices don't.
With deep sadness,
Julie C.
Arlington, MA
Sunshine, I teach high school here in Queens, NYC. I try very hard to keep the kids informed. There are so many people, young and old, who haven't a clue. If I said "Habeus Corpus" to them they'd think I was cursing in another language or talking about a new drink. But in the end, you are right, WE gotta hit 'em with our big, fat, collective purse.
Thanks MIMI!!!
I just left a message for air america radio management. I let them know I am canceling my premium membership since they are moving Sam. They suck!
You're the BEST! Will miss you weekdays, but will catch you sundays. I don't understand AA.
This is really sad. Mark Green is running this station the way he has run his political campaigns: incompetantly. This is a disgrace. If he waqs going to decimate the memory of AAR he and his brother should have let it die an honorable death. Sam Seder was one of the few voices that didn't apologize for being liberal and had an appropriate level of outrage for the transgressions not only of this criminal administration and their lapdog titular opposition but the cowardly main stream media, Godspeed my friend. We'll miss you more than you could know

" Lionel's show originates from WOR-AM "
Whore-I-M. Not to say anything bad about prostitutes.
The only downside of Nova M / Air America Phoenix, is that they have infomercials and Fox News shill, John J. Loftus.
For all the bitchin' from the Sam Seder Cult of Personality....facts are facts.
Seder wasn't drawing the ratings that his time-slot SHOULD have generated. Neither did Morning Sedition, neither did Mike Malloy.
(I won't include Al because the WHOLE point, as is now obvious, of the Franken show was...to give Al enough power and leverage, along with MidWest PAC, to run for Senate)
AAR as a home for the Far Left is finished. In the Era of Obama and/or The Return of the Clintonii....the Far Left has to go to the Blogosphere and when election time comes, pull the "D" lever and MAYBE the moderatee Dems will let them sit at the kids' table at Thanksgiving.
The "Revolucion" (aside from documentaries nobody will see) didn't come....nor would have.
Randi still appeals to the Paranoids, and might keep her drive-time (but wouldn't bet the farm she'll last past the 2008 election)....
but everybody else is OUT. Now some real radio talent (not actors and comics who THINK they can do radio) will come in...and they'll be moderates, not fire-breathing Bush haters who think Howard Dean is DLC!
Adios, Sam Seder...maybe President Hillary will be looking for speech-writers....just burn the old tapes of this show before you submit your resume'.

ya Mimi,
i know. I'd 'frame' it in a conversation about what a person busted for something goes thru.
that's immediate and relevant.
i'd say "up close and personal"
Why is it that this has to be a "Cult of Personality"? Gare, people actually LIKE the show. It has nothing to do with a cult or anything else. Geez, all the posters who hate this move just are following Sam because we're cultish? God, what a stupid argument because you dislike his show and style. Other people love it.
and you know this is going to become 'up close and personal' all to soon.
imagine having to watch every word that you say in fear of reprisas from corp/gov.
more so than now and regardless of what ethical considerations you might have.
Oh wait... Gare's a moderate... oh my! You have me so scared I'm shaking in my boots... just remember, the netroots did a lot in 2006... so have fun as a moderate while it lasts.
What a travesty! I'm so disappointed that I won't have those belly laughs thanks to Sam in the mornings anymore. He is a superstar handling those right wingers and always has the best guests on. Sundays is not enough Sam for me or my hubby who usually hates talk radio but finds Sam hilariously informative. Terrible move AAR!
Sam, I hope one day soon we can get you back on full time. Til then, you will be missed!
morfternoon elderta!
way good to read ya always.
i have to get to work, love ya all.
(Listening to Thom Hartmann...)
It always annoys me that people think that modern civilization is based on 'Judeo-Christian' values.
It is based on the Enlightenment. And the reason for the enlightenment, was the bloody centuries of religious wars that followed the 'Dark Ages'. It really all started with the Italian Renaissance, and was made official by the Peace Of Utrecht in 1648.
Modern civilisation is based on liberalism, freedom of speech, freedom of thought, freedom of religion, the freedoms and rights of the individual, as opposed to the church, society or business.
