I just saw a great idea. They had an American Idol for the guys in prison. Lots of musical talent there. You should have seen their faces. They were enjoying the program.

Now if they could get people in prison to teach what they know, Classes that would prepare them for when they get out of jail, we might have some productive people. And the prisoner teachers might build their self estime again.

I'm not talking about the hard core sociopaths. I'm talking the first timers that stole for various reasons, like feeding their familys and the the people picked up for drugs.

thats crazy talk ToniD

Prisoners don't need educations

What they need is more prisoners to share their cells with

If only every prison in this country could be privatized! That would be cool

Hilarious:

McCain heckled by CNN reporter
Sun Apr 01 2007 13:50:38 ET

**Exclusive**

During a live press conference in Bagdad, Senators McCain and Graham were heckled by CNN reporter Michael Ware. An official at the press conference called Ware’s conduct “outrageous,” saying, “here you have two United States Senators in Bagdad giving first-hand reports while Ware is laughing and mocking their comments. I’ve never witnessed such disrespect. This guy is an activist not a reporter.”

Senators McCain and Graham flew into Iraq and drove into Bagdad, making stops at an open market and a joint Iraq/American military security outpost before appearing at the press conference.

This is not the first time Michael Ware has taken issue with Senator McCain’s comments about early progress in Iraq. Last week, after Senator McCain told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that he needed to catch up on the news coming out of Iraq, Michael Ware responded, saying:

“I don't know what part of Neverland Senator McCain is talking about when he says we can go strolling in Baghdad.”

Michael Ware has also publicly expressed his views on the war last year in an interview with Bill Maher, saying, “I've been given a front-row ticket to watch this slow-motion train wreck … I try to stay as drunk for as long as possible while I'm here … In fact, I'm drinking now.”

-conbo

The local NPR station was playing an old interview they had with McCain to raise money for the station-anyway, McCain appeared on one of their gameshows and they were all kidding around and the NPR reporter said that he liked to be called a communist and a stalinist it was novel, and McCain said he liked to abuse NPR reporters but it was all in fun

McCain is like Bush only slightly more sane. Slightly.

McCain being assaulted by Michael Ware

I really feel bad for McCain. He only gets to vist the Neverland that is Iraq, where as Michael Ware gets to be there forever with all the mermaids and little fairys and Ice Cream Mountains. Rumors are that the My Little Pony Mercenaries have recently given every Iraqi a pair of wings.

Michael Ware has just gotten ungreatful in his cozy magical job.

George Orwell, Big Brother is watching your house
31.03.07
Add your view

The Big Brother nightmare of George Orwell's 1984 has become a reality - in the shadow of the author's former London home.

It may have taken a little longer than he predicted, but Orwell's vision of a society where cameras and computers spy on every person's movements is now here.

According to the latest studies, Britain has a staggering 4.2million CCTV cameras - one for every 14 people in the country - and 20 per cent of cameras globally. It has been calculated that each person is caught on camera an average of 300 times daily.

Use of spy cameras in modern-day Britain is now a chilling mirror image of Orwell's fictional world, created in the post-war Forties in a fourth-floor flat overlooking Canonbury Square in Islington, North London.

On the wall outside his former residence - flat number 27B - where Orwell lived until his death in 1950, an historical plaque commemorates the anti-authoritarian author. And within 200 yards of the flat, there are 32 CCTV cameras, scanning every move.

Orwell's view of the tree-filled gardens outside the flat is under 24-hour surveillance from two cameras perched on traffic lights.

The flat's rear windows are constantly viewed from two more security cameras outside a conference centre in Canonbury Place.

In a lane, just off the square, close to Orwell's favourite pub, the Compton Arms, a camera at the rear of a car dealership records every person entering or leaving the pub.

Jobs at Risk After Scandal at Juvenile Facility

PYOTE, Tex., March 29 — To most Texans, the West Texas State School here is the troubled institution at the center of a sexual abuse scandal that has shaken the state’s juvenile detention system.

But to the residents of this town of 129 and the neighboring communities, it is a source of badly needed jobs.

That is why about 200 people gathered outside the county courthouse in Monahans on Tuesday to oppose a state auditor’s recommendation to close the school, and why nine residents made the 750-mile round trip drive to Austin this week to address legislators on the matter.

“This facility has been a part of the community since 1965,” said Donna Garcia, community relations coordinator at the school. “It feels like a personal vendetta against this community. We feel like the Legislature needs somebody to blame this on.”

In February, news accounts reported that from 2003 to 2005 two officials at West Texas State had had late-night sexual encounters with incarcerated boys and then were allowed to resign without facing criminal charges. Responding to the disclosure, and to pressure from the Legislature, Gov. Rick Perry forced the resignation of the Texas Youth Commission board and ordered a review of all of its facilities.

The agency is currently investigating 1,200 complaints against juvenile facilities around the state.

omg

the big story here is people might lose their jobs?

i would quit if my job were connected to something like that!!!

Trust me, the problem is partly that community...they are outraged that the facility is being shut down...not that kids have been frequently, systematically abused there. nice.

Republican Sen. Arlen Specter (news, bio, voting record) of Pennsylvania and Democratic Sen. Auto workers occupy Scarborough plant
TheStar.com - News - Auto workers occupy Scarborough plant

Severance pay at root of grievances at bankrupt parts company

March 31, 2007
Canadian Press
Disgruntled auto workers occupied a plant in Scarborough today and say they won’t leave until the company agrees to pay severance to 200 laid off workers.
Doors were barricaded and about 100 workers inside were preventing production at the Collins & Aikman plant, which is scheduled to close at the end of July.

Bob Chernecki, assistant to the Canadian Auto Workers’ president, said the company told them the U.S. operations are refusing to release the money for severance.

Collins & Aikman, which manufactures automotive floor and acoustic systems as well as cockpit modules, filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. in May, 2005.

The company is aware of the situation and was trying to work toward a resolution, said a company spokesman.

“We are in a continuing dialogue with CAW and our customers to see if we can work constructively and cooperatively,” said David Youngman, who noted the company has one week to pay severance.

Chernecki says there were a few hundred workers outside the plant as well.

He says the purpose of the occupation is to force the company into complying with a previous agreement to pay severance to the fired workers.

Are you gruntled yet? The "dis" of disgruntled is not the same as the "dis" of "dismayed." It means "completely", and so "gruntled," just as it sounds, is an old word that means "grumbling." Today, however, "gruntled" has found its way into dictionaries as a word in its own right. If you look at the origin, you will see that it gives "gruntled" as a back-formation from "disgruntled." People assumed that "disgruntled" was a negative and invented the word "gruntled."

NBC's Tom Aspell has a kick-butt report tonight on John McCain's trip to Baghdad.

McCain declared earlier this week on CNN that the media was distorting the conditions on the ground in Iraq and that in fact you could stroll through many Baghdad neighborhoods, a rose-colored account that drew a quick rebuke from CNN's Michael Ware.

Aspell reports that McCain's "stroll" today through a Baghdad market was guarded by 100 American soldiers, three Blackhawk helicopters, and two Apache gunships.

In his Dukakis-in-a-tank moment, McCain himself wore a bulletproof vest on his stroll.

Record millions roll in for Clinton White House bid

POSTED: 7:55 p.m. EDT, April 1, 2007

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton raised $26 million and transferred an additional $10 million from her Senate war chest to post $36 million in the first quarter of the 2008 fundraising cycle, the New York Democrat's presidential campaign announced Sunday.

"We are completely overwhelmed and gratified by the historic support," Clinton campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle told reporters in a conference call Sunday afternoon.

Senior campaign aides noted that Clinton, a front-runner for the Democratic nomination, had raised the $26 million in a 10-week period, but still said their goal for the year remains at $75 million. Political analysts suggest the fundraising figure for Clinton and a handful of other presidential contenders is more likely to be in the $100 million range for the year.

The Clinton aides did not release how much money the New York senator currently has in the bank. Nor did they disclose how much of the $26 million raised can be used in the Democratic primary or how much of it is earmarked for the general election campaign, should Clinton win the party's nomination. Those figures will be released on or about April 15.

The campaign did say that of the $26 million raised, $4.2 million was contributed through the Internet.

The first quarter of the 2008 fundraising cycle is considered by many to be a reliable benchmark to assess a candidate's viability. The quarter closed on Saturday at midnight.

Iran accuses US jet fighters of violating airspace

Sun Apr 1, 3:27 PM ET

TEHRAN (AFP) - US warplanes have violated Iranian airspace in the southwestern oil province of Khuzestan, the Arabic language channel of Iranian state television quoted a local military chief as saying on Sunday.

However, a US military spokesman said he had checked into reports of an airspace violation and denied that any took place.

"Two US aircraft trespassed into Iranian airspace northwest of (the port city of) Abadan before flying southwest into Iraq," a Revolutionary Guards commander in Abadan identified only as Colonel Aqili was quoted as saying by the Al-Alam channel's website.

"The planes left white vapour trails, attracting the local people's attention," he said, without elaborating on when the alleged incursion took place.

The incident happened close to Iran's border with Iraq, where the US and British military are deployed in force, he said.

A US military spokesman told AFP that he had investigated the Iranian military's claim and found no evidence to support it.

"There is nothing that we saw that would indicate that that happened," he told AFP.

The United States is in a mounting diplomatic confrontation with Iran over its efforts to master the nuclear fuel cycle and Western suspicions that Tehran is bent on developing nuclear weapons, a charge vehemently denied by Iran.

I share the outrage expressed in the British press over the treatment of our naval personnel accused by Iran of illegally entering their waters. It is a disgrace. We would never dream of treating captives like this - allowing them to smoke cigarettes, for example, even though it has been proven that smoking kills. And as for compelling poor servicewoman Faye Turney to wear a black headscarf, and then allowing the picture to be posted around the world - have the Iranians no concept of civilised behaviour? For God's sake, what's wrong with putting a bag over her head? That's what we do with the Muslims we capture: we put bags over their heads, so it's hard to breathe. Then it's perfectly acceptable to take photographs of them and circulate them to the press because the captives can't be recognised and humiliated in the way these unfortunate British service people are.

It is also unacceptable that these British captives should be made to talk on television and say things that they may regret later. If the Iranians put duct tape over their mouths, like we do to our captives, they wouldn't be able to talk at all. Of course they'd probably find it even harder to breathe - especially with a bag over their head - but at least they wouldn't be humiliated.

And what's all this about allowing the captives to write letters home saying they are all right? It's time the Iranians fell into line with the rest of the civilised world: they should allow their captives the privacy of solitary confinement. That's one of the many privileges the US grants to its captives in Guantánamo Bay. Read entire article here.

What do you want to say to the people?

Anytime there’s an injustice it’s an opportunity to stand up.

Everytime we voice that something needs to change, despite the risk involved, it makes it harder for those in charge to continue the injustices. One person standing up becomes 16 people standing up and eventually you create a critical mass where the entire population has become contentious of the situation and stops it before it becomes a catastrophe.

Tsunami hits Solomon Islands; 4 missing By EVAN WASUKA, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 14 minutes ago

HONIARA, Solomon Islands - A powerful earthquake struck in the South Pacific Monday off the Solomon Islands, triggering a tsunami several yards high that destroyed a village and left at least four people missing, officials and residents said.

Judith Kennedy, a resident of the western town of Gizo, said water "right up to your head" swept through the town.

"All the houses near the sea were flattened," she told The Associated Press by telephone. "The downtown area is a very big mess from the tsunami and the earthquake," she added. "A lot of houses have collapsed. The whole town is still shaking" from aftershocks.

Police and residents said buildings were inundated when the wave hit Gizo, a regional center.

Harry Wickham, who owns a waterfront hotel in the town, said the damage was widespread.

"The waves came up probably about 10 feet and swept through town," he told Australia's Nine Network television by telephone. "There's a lot of water damage and a lot of debris floating around," he added.

Raising Roberto (Again)

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/033107C.shtml

On January 26, 2005, Specialist Roberto Reyes Jr. was returning to base after a five-day mission when the Humvee he was riding in hit a mine just west of Baghdad. The force of the blast threw Reyes 20 feet and caused the ears of his comrades to bleed. The sergeant who found Reyes crawling on all fours with his skull hanging open saw Reyes's helmet nearby.

A shimmering liquid in it caught his attention; as he poured it out, he realized what it was: part of Reyes's brain.

Transpartisan Coalition Rejects Mueller Testimony: Group calls on FBI, Congress to uphold the Constitution

Submitted by Michael D Ostrolenk on Sun, 2007-04-01 14:17.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 29, 2007

Transpartisan Coalition Rejects Mueller Testimony Group calls on FBI, Congress to uphold the Constitution

WASHINGTON, DC - The Liberty Coalition, a transpartisan public policy group dedicated to preserving the Bill of Rights, personal autonomy and individual privacy today rebuffed the testimony of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Robert Mueller regarding the illegal use of National Security Letters (NSL's). Appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Director Mueller acknowledged that laws had been broken but argued that future abuses could be prevented by internal means within the FBI.

"The FBI has clearly abused its power and violated the constitutional rights of tens of thousands of Americans. These actions must not be tolerated in a free society," said Liberty Coalition national director Michael Ostrolenk. "While enhanced public scrutiny and Congressional oversight are a good first step, they are not enough to protect our Nation's liberty from abusive, unchecked power. Congress must act to stop the issuance of National Security Letters!"

America Freedom to Fascism Authorized version

The scariest damn film you'll see this year. It will leave you staggering out of the theatre, slack-jawed and trembling. Makes 'Fahrenheit 9/11' look like 'Bambi.' Aaron Russo goes for the jugular -- the two planks of the communist Manifesto instituted in America in 1913, The Marxist Graduated Income Tax and the Private Central Bank -- the Federal Reserve. Must SEE.
