Hey, if you guys want to witness Americans' brilliance, look at CNN's poll - "Do you agree with Newt Gingrich that bilingual education 'teaches the language of living in the ghetto?'"
"THE NEW York Times recently reported that the earnings gap is now the widest since 1928, with the richest 1 percent of Americans having captured most of the economy's 2005 growth, and the bottom 90 percent getting nothing. Between 1979 and 2005, according to MIT professor Thomas Kochan, productivity of American manufacturing rose by about 70 percent, but the real wages of production workers remained flat."
Here it is: Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign raised a record-setting $26 million for her presidential campaign in the first three months of a year, an impressive feat that may nonetheless be overshadowed in the next few days by news that Sen. Barack Obama managed to keep pace.
That Drudge headline: HRC "blows the field away" with $36 million -- refers to the $26M and also the $11M she transferred in.
WH Rejects Senate Compromise On Rove, Miers Testimony Reuters | Stuart Grudgings | April 1, 2007 01:40 PM
The White House dismissed on Sunday a possible U.S. Senate compromise to allow testimony by officials over the firing of federal prosecutors, which has embroiled President George W. Bush's administration in controversy and led to calls for his attorney general to quit.
Republican Sen. Arlen Specter (news, bio, voting record) of Pennsylvania and Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer (news, bio, voting record) of New York said an agreement was possible under which White House aides such as Bush's chief political strategist Karl Rove could testify without being under oath.
I remember the "good ol' days" very well. Randi Rhodes yelled insanely at and babbled at her callers (pre-rehab) from 3-6 P.M. EST. Then Marty Kaplan (does anyone remember him?) did a boring one-hour show from 6-7. Then the Majority Report was on from 7-10.
6 U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq bombings 1 hour, 44 minutes ago BAGHDAD - After a heavily guarded trip to a Baghdad market, Sen. The U.S. military later reported six soldiers were killed in roadside bombings southwest of Baghdad.

Severance pay at root of grievances at bankrupt parts company
March 31, 2007 Canadian Press Disgruntled auto workers occupied a plant in Scarborough today and say they won’t leave until the company agrees to pay severance to 200 laid off workers. Doors were barricaded and about 100 workers inside were preventing production at the Collins & Aikman plant, which is scheduled to close at the end of July.
Bob Chernecki, assistant to the Canadian Auto Workers’ president, said the company told them the U.S. operations are refusing to release the money for severance.
Collins & Aikman, which manufactures automotive floor and acoustic systems as well as cockpit modules, filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. in May, 2005.
The company is aware of the situation and was trying to work toward a resolution, said a company spokesman.
“We are in a continuing dialogue with CAW and our customers to see if we can work constructively and cooperatively,” said David Youngman, who noted the company has one week to pay severance.
Chernecki says there were a few hundred workers outside the plant as well.
He says the purpose of the occupation is to force the company into complying with a previous agreement to pay severance to the fired workers.
Are you gruntled yet? The "dis" of disgruntled is not the same as the "dis" of "dismayed." It means "completely", and so "gruntled," just as it sounds, is an old word that means "grumbling." Today, however, "gruntled" has found its way into dictionaries as a word in its own right. If you look at the origin, you will see that it gives "gruntled" as a back-formation from "disgruntled." People assumed that "disgruntled" was a negative and invented the word "gruntled."

NBC's Tom Aspell has a kick-butt report tonight on John McCain's trip to Baghdad.
McCain declared earlier this week on CNN that the media was distorting the conditions on the ground in Iraq and that in fact you could stroll through many Baghdad neighborhoods, a rose-colored account that drew a quick rebuke from CNN's Michael Ware.
Aspell reports that McCain's "stroll" today through a Baghdad market was guarded by 100 American soldiers, three Blackhawk helicopters, and two Apache gunships.
In his Dukakis-in-a-tank moment, McCain himself wore a bulletproof vest on his stroll.
"We are not apologising, nor are we saying that we entered their waters in the first place. But it may offer a route out of the crisis."

Record millions roll in for Clinton White House bid
POSTED: 7:55 p.m. EDT, April 1, 2007
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton raised $26 million and transferred an additional $10 million from her Senate war chest to post $36 million in the first quarter of the 2008 fundraising cycle, the New York Democrat's presidential campaign announced Sunday.
"We are completely overwhelmed and gratified by the historic support," Clinton campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle told reporters in a conference call Sunday afternoon.
Senior campaign aides noted that Clinton, a front-runner for the Democratic nomination, had raised the $26 million in a 10-week period, but still said their goal for the year remains at $75 million. Political analysts suggest the fundraising figure for Clinton and a handful of other presidential contenders is more likely to be in the $100 million range for the year.
The Clinton aides did not release how much money the New York senator currently has in the bank. Nor did they disclose how much of the $26 million raised can be used in the Democratic primary or how much of it is earmarked for the general election campaign, should Clinton win the party's nomination. Those figures will be released on or about April 15.
The campaign did say that of the $26 million raised, $4.2 million was contributed through the Internet.
The first quarter of the 2008 fundraising cycle is considered by many to be a reliable benchmark to assess a candidate's viability. The quarter closed on Saturday at midnight.

Iran accuses US jet fighters of violating airspace
Sun Apr 1, 3:27 PM ET
TEHRAN (AFP) - US warplanes have violated Iranian airspace in the southwestern oil province of Khuzestan, the Arabic language channel of Iranian state television quoted a local military chief as saying on Sunday.
However, a US military spokesman said he had checked into reports of an airspace violation and denied that any took place.
"Two US aircraft trespassed into Iranian airspace northwest of (the port city of) Abadan before flying southwest into Iraq," a Revolutionary Guards commander in Abadan identified only as Colonel Aqili was quoted as saying by the Al-Alam channel's website.
"The planes left white vapour trails, attracting the local people's attention," he said, without elaborating on when the alleged incursion took place.
The incident happened close to Iran's border with Iraq, where the US and British military are deployed in force, he said.
A US military spokesman told AFP that he had investigated the Iranian military's claim and found no evidence to support it.
"There is nothing that we saw that would indicate that that happened," he told AFP.
The United States is in a mounting diplomatic confrontation with Iran over its efforts to master the nuclear fuel cycle and Western suspicions that Tehran is bent on developing nuclear weapons, a charge vehemently denied by Iran.

You Call That Humiliation? By: Nicole Belle @ 11:33 AM - PDT Terry Jones of Monty Python fame gives us his take on the circumstances the British soldiers held hostage in Iran are enduring. (h/t Gregory)
Guardian: No hoods. No electric shocks. No beatings. These Iranians clearly are a very uncivilised bunch
I share the outrage expressed in the British press over the treatment of our naval personnel accused by Iran of illegally entering their waters. It is a disgrace. We would never dream of treating captives like this - allowing them to smoke cigarettes, for example, even though it has been proven that smoking kills. And as for compelling poor servicewoman Faye Turney to wear a black headscarf, and then allowing the picture to be posted around the world - have the Iranians no concept of civilised behaviour? For God's sake, what's wrong with putting a bag over her head? That's what we do with the Muslims we capture: we put bags over their heads, so it's hard to breathe. Then it's perfectly acceptable to take photographs of them and circulate them to the press because the captives can't be recognised and humiliated in the way these unfortunate British service people are.
It is also unacceptable that these British captives should be made to talk on television and say things that they may regret later. If the Iranians put duct tape over their mouths, like we do to our captives, they wouldn't be able to talk at all. Of course they'd probably find it even harder to breathe - especially with a bag over their head - but at least they wouldn't be humiliated.
And what's all this about allowing the captives to write letters home saying they are all right? It's time the Iranians fell into line with the rest of the civilised world: they should allow their captives the privacy of solitary confinement. That's one of the many privileges the US grants to its captives in Guantánamo Bay. Read entire article here.
Anytime there’s an injustice it’s an opportunity to stand up.
Everytime we voice that something needs to change, despite the risk involved, it makes it harder for those in charge to continue the injustices. One person standing up becomes 16 people standing up and eventually you create a critical mass where the entire population has become contentious of the situation and stops it before it becomes a catastrophe.
Tsunami hits Solomon Islands; 4 missing By EVAN WASUKA, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 14 minutes ago
HONIARA, Solomon Islands - A powerful earthquake struck in the South Pacific Monday off the Solomon Islands, triggering a tsunami several yards high that destroyed a village and left at least four people missing, officials and residents said.
Judith Kennedy, a resident of the western town of Gizo, said water "right up to your head" swept through the town.
"All the houses near the sea were flattened," she told The Associated Press by telephone. "The downtown area is a very big mess from the tsunami and the earthquake," she added. "A lot of houses have collapsed. The whole town is still shaking" from aftershocks.
Police and residents said buildings were inundated when the wave hit Gizo, a regional center.
Harry Wickham, who owns a waterfront hotel in the town, said the damage was widespread.
"The waves came up probably about 10 feet and swept through town," he told Australia's Nine Network television by telephone. "There's a lot of water damage and a lot of debris floating around," he added.

Transpartisan Coalition Rejects Mueller Testimony Group calls on FBI, Congress to uphold the Constitution
WASHINGTON, DC - The Liberty Coalition, a transpartisan public policy group dedicated to preserving the Bill of Rights, personal autonomy and individual privacy today rebuffed the testimony of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Robert Mueller regarding the illegal use of National Security Letters (NSL's). Appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Director Mueller acknowledged that laws had been broken but argued that future abuses could be prevented by internal means within the FBI.
"The FBI has clearly abused its power and violated the constitutional rights of tens of thousands of Americans. These actions must not be tolerated in a free society," said Liberty Coalition national director Michael Ostrolenk. "While enhanced public scrutiny and Congressional oversight are a good first step, they are not enough to protect our Nation's liberty from abusive, unchecked power. Congress must act to stop the issuance of National Security Letters!"

WH Rejects Senate Compromise On Rove, Miers Testimony
Reuters | Stuart Grudgings | April 1, 2007 01:40 PM
The White House dismissed on Sunday a possible U.S. Senate compromise to allow testimony by officials over the firing of federal prosecutors, which has embroiled President George W. Bush's administration in controversy and led to calls for his attorney general to quit.
Republican Sen. Arlen Specter (news, bio, voting record) of Pennsylvania and Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer (news, bio, voting record) of New York said an agreement was possible under which White House aides such as Bush's chief political strategist Karl Rove could testify without being under oath.

6 U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq bombings
1 hour, 44 minutes ago
BAGHDAD - After a heavily guarded trip to a Baghdad market, Sen. John McCain insisted Sunday that a U.S.-Iraqi security crackdown in the capital was working and said Americans lacked a "full picture" of the progress. The U.S. military later reported six soldiers were killed in roadside bombings southwest of Baghdad.

Auto workers occupy Scarborough plant
TheStar.com - News - Auto workers occupy Scarborough plant
Severance pay at root of grievances at bankrupt parts company
March 31, 2007
Canadian Press
Disgruntled auto workers occupied a plant in Scarborough today and say they won’t leave until the company agrees to pay severance to 200 laid off workers.

Supporting Orrin Hatch to become AG
By: John Amato @ 12:35 PM - PDT It was sweet music to my ears when I heard that Orrin Hatch was campaigning to take Alberto Gonzales' job away from him. We at C&L just love the man from Utah and think it's a wonderful idea that he would try to snatch the job away from Gonzo at his time of need.

I also totally agree that Alberto is incapable of telling a lie, so I don't understand all the fuss being made about this attorney case either. Pat Leahy is just a big meanie and I wish he would go to the part of New Jersey that Bill Donahue said the Chocolate Jesus should go…
Donohue: But, quite frankly, where should you have this displayed? In New Jersey is where New Yorkers put their garbage. There's a big sanitation dump. That's where you should put it.

What do you want to say to the people?
Anytime there’s an injustice it’s an opportunity to stand up.
Everytime we voice that something needs to change, despite the risk involved, it makes it harder for those in charge to continue the injustices. One person standing up becomes 16 people standing up and eventually you create a critical mass where the entire population has become contentious of the situation and stops it before it becomes a catastrophe.

Tsunami hits Solomon Islands; 4 missing By EVAN WASUKA, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 14 minutes ago

On January 26, 2005, Specialist Roberto Reyes Jr. was returning to base after a five-day mission when the Humvee he was riding in hit a mine just west of Baghdad. The force of the blast threw Reyes 20 feet and caused the ears of his comrades to bleed. The sergeant who found Reyes crawling on all fours with his skull hanging open saw Reyes's helmet nearby.
A shimmering liquid in it caught his attention; as he poured it out, he realized what it was: part of Reyes's brain.

Transpartisan Coalition Rejects Mueller Testimony: Group calls on FBI, Congress to uphold the Constitution
Submitted by Michael D Ostrolenk on Sun, 2007-04-01 14:17.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 29, 2007

~marty_feldman.jpg~
My icon is a picture of a relative, and we aren't sure who... One of my grandmother's cousins. They found this picture in her attic after she died. The weird thing about the picture is it looks EXACTLY like me at that age, minus the ringlets and the bow.
//Aw! Marty Feldman!//
LMAO!
Q.E.D.
(i'm in love)
They thought it might be cousin Delia, who was famous for getting drunk and falling into the fireplace.
//They found this picture in her attic after she died.//
was she murdered with an axe?
Ono, I thought you had some Asian girlfriend...
ok, the villagers burnt her at the stake
for some steak
//was she murdered with an axe?//
Who? My grandmother or the cousin?
Well, the answer is no either way. Thy both died of natural causes.
//I thought you had some Asian girlfriend//
i wish!!
however, if you're referring to jaqy
nah, she's polynesian...
who are asian'ish
//died of natural causes.//
ok, so i was right
the villagers burnt her at the stake

//i'm sure we'd have enjoyed her.//

man,
i got the chronic giggles goin' on here
Lots of amusing stories about my grandmother's cousin Delia... Not to be confused with MY cousin Delia, who isn't a drunk, but is a really cool artist.
(giggle)
[warning: nudity]
mmmm...
for extra taste
just insert your favourite aunty's name
//[warning: nudity]//
I like how the warning was for nudity... Not for the utterly disturbing nature of the photo.
Why are you and crank both posting pictures from Memphis websites?

//Memphis websites//

///is that a memphis website...///
The pic says "rock103.com" which is a Memphis radio station.
The Three Stooges pic that Crank Bait put up a minute ago was from a Memphis blogger's site.

Hi, had to let you know that
Journalist Alexander Cockburn is now (9.oo PAcific) on BookTV CSPAN for three (3) hours of interview.
Can't believe myself that he gets to have his say on TV but here he is. Find out what it really means to be on the left politically cause he really is - not like ... oh well ... no time for that today. Peace and good will wishes ;-)
So don't miss AC tonight - his brother reports from Iraq btw.

No joy, ono. Apparently, know has been thoughtful enough to have uploaded a copy for me to scavenge.
Thanks for the B-day wishes.
