Greetings from beautiful and exciting Hope Valley, Rhode Island.
I just saw a great idea. They had an American Idol for the guys in prison. Lots of musical talent there. You should have seen their faces. They were enjoying the program. Now if they could get people in prison to teach what they know, Classes that would prepare them for when they get out of jail, we might have some productive people. And the prisoner teachers might build their self estime again.I'm not talking about the hard core sociopaths. I'm talking the first timers that stole for various reasons, like feeding their familys and the the people picked up for drugs.
thats crazy talk ToniDPrisoners don't need educationsWhat they need is more prisoners to share their cells withIf only every prison in this country could be privatized! That would be coolSabotage!-conbo

this bears reposting:m the a-c said... Hilarious:McCain heckled by CNN reporterSun Apr 01 2007 13:50:38 ET**Exclusive** During a live press conference in Bagdad, Senators McCain and Graham were heckled by CNN reporter Michael Ware. An official at the press conference called Ware’s conduct “outrageous,” saying, “here you have two United States Senators in Bagdad giving first-hand reports while Ware is laughing and mocking their comments. I’ve never witnessed such disrespect. This guy is an activist not a reporter.” Senators McCain and Graham flew into Iraq and drove into Bagdad, making stops at an open market and a joint Iraq/American military security outpost before appearing at the press conference. This is not the first time Michael Ware has taken issue with Senator McCain’s comments about early progress in Iraq. Last week, after Senator McCain told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that he needed to catch up on the news coming out of Iraq, Michael Ware responded, saying: “I don't know what part of Neverland Senator McCain is talking about when he says we can go strolling in Baghdad.” Michael Ware has also publicly expressed his views on the war last year in an interview with Bill Maher, saying, “I've been given a front-row ticket to watch this slow-motion train wreck … I try to stay as drunk for as long as possible while I'm here … In fact, I'm drinking now.” -conboThe local NPR station was playing an old interview they had with McCain to raise money for the station-anyway, McCain appeared on one of their gameshows and they were all kidding around and the NPR reporter said that he liked to be called a communist and a stalinist it was novel, and McCain said he liked to abuse NPR reporters but it was all in funMcCain is like Bush only slightly more sane. Slightly.

McCain being assaulted by Michael WareI really feel bad for McCain. He only gets to vist the Neverland that is Iraq, where as Michael Ware gets to be there forever with all the mermaids and little fairys and Ice Cream Mountains. Rumors are that the My Little Pony Mercenaries have recently given every Iraqi a pair of wings.Michael Ware has just gotten ungreatful in his cozy magical job.-conbo
George Orwell, Big Brother is watching your house31.03.07 Add your view The Big Brother nightmare of George Orwell's 1984 has become a reality - in the shadow of the author's former London home.It may have taken a little longer than he predicted, but Orwell's vision of a society where cameras and computers spy on every person's movements is now here.According to the latest studies, Britain has a staggering 4.2million CCTV cameras - one for every 14 people in the country - and 20 per cent of cameras globally. It has been calculated that each person is caught on camera an average of 300 times daily.Use of spy cameras in modern-day Britain is now a chilling mirror image of Orwell's fictional world, created in the post-war Forties in a fourth-floor flat overlooking Canonbury Square in Islington, North London. On the wall outside his former residence - flat number 27B - where Orwell lived until his death in 1950, an historical plaque commemorates the anti-authoritarian author. And within 200 yards of the flat, there are 32 CCTV cameras, scanning every move. Orwell's view of the tree-filled gardens outside the flat is under 24-hour surveillance from two cameras perched on traffic lights. The flat's rear windows are constantly viewed from two more security cameras outside a conference centre in Canonbury Place. In a lane, just off the square, close to Orwell's favourite pub, the Compton Arms, a camera at the rear of a car dealership records every person entering or leaving the pub.LINK
And it isn't just Michael Ware, Connie. You should have heard Kira Phillips, from CNN. She is neverland to and has traveled with Patreas. She said he goes nowhere without protection. That's not what McCain said. She said you can't walk down any street and be safe. Even the insurgents aren't safe.
Jobs at Risk After Scandal at Juvenile Facility PYOTE, Tex., March 29 — To most Texans, the West Texas State School here is the troubled institution at the center of a sexual abuse scandal that has shaken the state’s juvenile detention system. But to the residents of this town of 129 and the neighboring communities, it is a source of badly needed jobs. That is why about 200 people gathered outside the county courthouse in Monahans on Tuesday to oppose a state auditor’s recommendation to close the school, and why nine residents made the 750-mile round trip drive to Austin this week to address legislators on the matter.“This facility has been a part of the community since 1965,” said Donna Garcia, community relations coordinator at the school. “It feels like a personal vendetta against this community. We feel like the Legislature needs somebody to blame this on.”In February, news accounts reported that from 2003 to 2005 two officials at West Texas State had had late-night sexual encounters with incarcerated boys and then were allowed to resign without facing criminal charges. Responding to the disclosure, and to pressure from the Legislature, Gov. Rick Perry forced the resignation of the Texas Youth Commission board and ordered a review of all of its facilities. The agency is currently investigating 1,200 complaints against juvenile facilities around the state. The NY Times

Here is a recent argument that I find weak.To give the "enemy" a schedule for U.S. withdrawal from the battleground is to give the "enemy" an advantage.-----Okay...let us assume that Congress holds the purse strings to the treasury which funds the war. Let us further assume that the reason for Congress having the power of the purse is to provide a "check and balance" against an otherwise all-powerful Executive branch.Let us assume (again) that in every case in which the Executive desires to continue a war while the Congress desires to end it, Congress' only option is to cut off the funding; an action which will ALWAYS provide the "enemy" with the advantage of knowing that withdrawal of U.S. forces is eminent. In other words, for Congress to possess the power to end a war, it is a fait accompli that Congress must ALWAYS broadcast its intent. And in other, other words, the argument that cutting funding for a war is to give the "enemy" an advantage is simultaneously an argument that Congress should not (or does not) have the power to keep the Executive in check.Either we, the electorate, like the idea of eternally having an instrument in hand that can stop one man in the White House from doing as he pleases, or we do not?In every imaginable case of a President preferring prolonged war and the Congress ending said war, the President will be able to claim that Congress is tipping-off the "enemy".Therefore, the argument fails. An honest and legitimate argument from the President would be, "We are winning" or "We will win soon" and not "You are helping the bad guys."

Auto workers occupy Scarborough plant TheStar.com - News - Auto workers occupy Scarborough plant Severance pay at root of grievances at bankrupt parts companyMarch 31, 2007 Canadian PressDisgruntled auto workers occupied a plant in Scarborough today and say they won’t leave until the company agrees to pay severance to 200 laid off workers. Doors were barricaded and about 100 workers inside were preventing production at the Collins & Aikman plant, which is scheduled to close at the end of July. Bob Chernecki, assistant to the Canadian Auto Workers’ president, said the company told them the U.S. operations are refusing to release the money for severance. Collins & Aikman, which manufactures automotive floor and acoustic systems as well as cockpit modules, filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. in May, 2005. The company is aware of the situation and was trying to work toward a resolution, said a company spokesman. “We are in a continuing dialogue with CAW and our customers to see if we can work constructively and cooperatively,” said David Youngman, who noted the company has one week to pay severance. Chernecki says there were a few hundred workers outside the plant as well. He says the purpose of the occupation is to force the company into complying with a previous agreement to pay severance to the fired workers. LINK
anyone know how i can access "my computer/my documents" while i'm in melbourne?e.g. do i have to arrange it with my isp?---------i know, i know, i've berated others for using the blog as a help desk, but that's no reason to berate me for the same sin (ok)
Are you gruntled yet? The "dis" of disgruntled is not the same as the "dis" of "dismayed." It means "completely", and so "gruntled," just as it sounds, is an old word that means "grumbling." Today, however, "gruntled" has found its way into dictionaries as a word in its own right. If you look at the origin, you will see that it gives "gruntled" as a back-formation from "disgruntled." People assumed that "disgruntled" was a negative and invented the word "gruntled."
toniD, McCain, in true politician modus operandi style, is and will continue to be incapable of spinning the progression of the war as anything but hunky-dory because of his support for a "surge".He made his bed. Let him show his true integrity as the obvious becomes more undeniable; "I was wrong and I've changed my mind" or "I was right but there weren't enough boots put on the ground to make it work."I'm putting my money on the "no integrity" sidestepping bet.To my (political) mind, McCain should have bailed on the "surge" idea as soon as Bush adopted it. McCain could have legitimately claimed (back then) that the Bush surge plan and the McCain surge plan differed too greatly to be compared...apples and oranges. But he didn't. Let him twirl in the wind.
I'm quite willing to let him twirl in the wind. He's really a big disappointment. At one point I did have a modicum of repect for him but that's gone.I would never have voted for him, but I did feel sorry for him when he was attacked by the bushies. Then he started his kissing act and that turned my stomach.

NBC's Tom Aspell has a kick-butt report tonight on John McCain's trip to Baghdad.McCain declared earlier this week on CNN that the media was distorting the conditions on the ground in Iraq and that in fact you could stroll through many Baghdad neighborhoods, a rose-colored account that drew a quick rebuke from CNN's Michael Ware.Aspell reports that McCain's "stroll" today through a Baghdad market was guarded by 100 American soldiers, three Blackhawk helicopters, and two Apache gunships. In his Dukakis-in-a-tank moment, McCain himself wore a bulletproof vest on his stroll.LINK

Hillary Rodham Clinton raised $26 million and transferred an additional $10 million from her Senate war chest to post $36 million in the first quarter of the 2008 fundraising cycle, the New York Democrat's presidential campaign announced Sunday."We are completely overwhelmed and gratified by the historic support," Clinton campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle told reporters in a conference call Sunday afternoon.Senior campaign aides noted that Clinton, a front-runner for the Democratic nomination, had raised the $26 million in a 10-week period, but still said their goal for the year remains at $75 million. Political analysts suggest the fundraising figure for Clinton and a handful of other presidential contenders is more likely to be in the $100 million range for the year. The Clinton aides did not release how much money the New York senator currently has in the bank. Nor did they disclose how much of the $26 million raised can be used in the Democratic primary or how much of it is earmarked for the general election campaign, should Clinton win the party's nomination. Those figures will be released on or about April 15. The campaign did say that of the $26 million raised, $4.2 million was contributed through the Internet. The first quarter of the 2008 fundraising cycle is considered by many to be a reliable benchmark to assess a candidate's viability. The quarter closed on Saturday at midnight.

You Call That Humiliation?By: Nicole Belle @ 11:33 AM - PDT Terry Jones of Monty Python fame gives us his take on the circumstances the British soldiers held hostage in Iran are enduring. (h/t Gregory)Guardian: No hoods. No electric shocks. No beatings. These Iranians clearly are a very uncivilised bunchI share the outrage expressed in the British press over the treatment of our naval personnel accused by Iran of illegally entering their waters. It is a disgrace. We would never dream of treating captives like this - allowing them to smoke cigarettes, for example, even though it has been proven that smoking kills. And as for compelling poor servicewoman Faye Turney to wear a black headscarf, and then allowing the picture to be posted around the world - have the Iranians no concept of civilised behaviour? For God's sake, what's wrong with putting a bag over her head? That's what we do with the Muslims we capture: we put bags over their heads, so it's hard to breathe. Then it's perfectly acceptable to take photographs of them and circulate them to the press because the captives can't be recognised and humiliated in the way these unfortunate British service people are.It is also unacceptable that these British captives should be made to talk on television and say things that they may regret later. If the Iranians put duct tape over their mouths, like we do to our captives, they wouldn't be able to talk at all. Of course they'd probably find it even harder to breathe - especially with a bag over their head - but at least they wouldn't be humiliated. And what's all this about allowing the captives to write letters home saying they are all right? It's time the Iranians fell into line with the rest of the civilised world: they should allow their captives the privacy of solitary confinement. That's one of the many privileges the US grants to its captives in Guantánamo Bay. Read entire article here.
What do you want to say to the people?Anytime there’s an injustice it’s an opportunity to stand up. Everytime we voice that something needs to change, despite the risk involved, it makes it harder for those in charge to continue the injustices. One person standing up becomes 16 people standing up and eventually you create a critical mass where the entire population has become contentious of the situation and stops it before it becomes a catastrophe. For more information, visit http://joshwolf.net

Mr negative himself...The Crank Bait...War has been the S.O.P. since man stood upright..It's losing wars you must avoid..That is why Congress does not want to cut funding..They don't want to lose..They don't mind talking about it..But in the end the money will flow..The Plan will be completed..We will attack Iran..And a new day will dawn much as it did when we defeated Communism..You mark my words...Sam will be a new man when his life no longer revolves around bitching...

Tsunami hits Solomon Islands; 4 missing By EVAN WASUKA, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 14 minutes ago HONIARA, Solomon Islands - A powerful earthquake struck in the South Pacific Monday off the Solomon Islands, triggering a tsunami several yards high that destroyed a village and left at least four people missing, officials and residents said. Judith Kennedy, a resident of the western town of Gizo, said water "right up to your head" swept through the town."All the houses near the sea were flattened," she told The Associated Press by telephone. "The downtown area is a very big mess from the tsunami and the earthquake," she added. "A lot of houses have collapsed. The whole town is still shaking" from aftershocks.Police and residents said buildings were inundated when the wave hit Gizo, a regional center.Harry Wickham, who owns a waterfront hotel in the town, said the damage was widespread."The waves came up probably about 10 feet and swept through town," he told Australia's Nine Network television by telephone. "There's a lot of water damage and a lot of debris floating around," he added.LINK

Raising Roberto (Again)http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/033107C.shtmlOn January 26, 2005, Specialist Roberto Reyes Jr. was returning to base after a five-day mission when the Humvee he was riding in hit a mine just west of Baghdad. The force of the blast threw Reyes 20 feet and caused the ears of his comrades to bleed. The sergeant who found Reyes crawling on all fours with his skull hanging open saw Reyes's helmet nearby. A shimmering liquid in it caught his attention; as he poured it out, he realized what it was: part of Reyes's brain.

Appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Director Mueller acknowledged that laws had been broken but argued that future abuses could be prevented by internal means within the FBI. "The FBI has clearly abused its power and violated the constitutional rights of tens of thousands of Americans. These actions must not be tolerated in a free society," said Liberty Coalition national director Michael Ostrolenk. "While enhanced public scrutiny and Congressional oversight are a good first step, they are not enough to protect our Nation's liberty from abusive, unchecked power. Congress must act to stop the issuance of National Security Letters!"

America Freedom to Fascism Authorized versionhttp://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4312730277175242198&q=freedom+to+fascismThe scariest damn film you'll see this year. It will leave you staggering out of the theatre, slack-jawed and trembling. Makes 'Fahrenheit 9/11' look like 'Bambi.' Aaron Russo goes for the jugular -- the two planks of the communist Manifesto instituted in America in 1913, The Marxist Graduated Income Tax and the Private Central Bank -- the Federal Reserve. Must SEE.

My icon is a picture of a relative, and we aren't sure who... One of my grandmother's cousins. They found this picture in her attic after she died. The weird thing about the picture is it looks EXACTLY like me at that age, minus the ringlets and the bow.

They thought it might be cousin Delia, who was famous for getting drunk and falling into the fireplace.
