Announcing

It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that this week will be the last week of the Sam Seder Show on Air America. As you know, Air America recently came out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy and the new management wants to go in a different direction with the 9-Noon (est) time slot. However, as much as I would like to spend more time with Alberto Gonzales’ family, he will be doing so shortly, freeing me up to do a Sunday afternoon show on Air America Radio. The show is tentatively known as Seder on Sundays and I am excited to get it started.

I am very proud of the three years I have broadcast on Air America Radio. I am particularly proud of the Sam Seder Show. We started the show as AAR was entering bankruptcy, when things around here were pretty hectic and insecure. The Sam Seder juggernaut, as no one but me called us, was able to maintain all of our affiliates that stayed with the progressive format through our bankruptcy. While it’s a bit early to judge, (our first full “book” is out in a couple of weeks) our ratings were looking pretty good and we dramatically increased AAR’s streaming numbers during this time slot. Most importantly, though, was the support and response we received from you, our audience. You'll never know just how helpful and motivating your comments, calls, emails and letters have been to me and my family and I greatly appreciate it.

I hope all of you will join me when I begin the Sunday show in the next month and a half or so. Of course, I’ll be maintaining this blog and continuing to promise to fix it. ( I mean it this time, I am serious!) I actually have some rather large plans for this site and its offerings but am not prepared to discuss them at the moment.

Anyway, over the next week I’ll be posting more about my plans, this site, Seder on Sundays and reflecting upon the last three years.

My email address is posted in the left hand column of this blog— drop me an email if you want to receive updates in the future. And tune in this week! I really don’t know how I am going to break this to Dewey.

Anarchist Paradise!

Not something you expect from The Guardian but:

Still, it’s an impressive record, and no crime is just the beginning. The little west Jamaican town of Accompong has another secret, one that you’d think would belie the first. There are also no police. And, to the envy of us all, no taxes.“A nation within a nation,” is how little-known Accompong has been described. It was here in 1739 that runaway Maroon slaves signed a peace treaty with the British to gain semi-sovereignty over the area. Today, the treaty still stands. The town is run by an elected “colonel”, the state can only interfere in the case of a capital crime,
...
Maroons are extremely proud of their traditions and (...) a large percentage of them to live to more than 100 years old.

See, see, it's the State that kills you!

http://travel.guardian.co.uk/article/2007/feb/21/jamaica.accompong
With no taxes, no police and hardly any crime, the semi-independent town of Accompong in western Jamaica is an idyll for the traveller looking to get off the beaten track.....

Really enjoyed your morning show. Great stuff. Sorry to see it go It wasn't broadcast on the AAR affiliate in Denver area, so I had to stream it. You were better than the local morning show on AAR.

I have lived in Tampa since 1984 and remember listening to Lionel's maiden call to a talk show host here in Tampa while he was a student at Stetson Law School. I remember a year or so ago calling in to his radio show out of New York and asking his "phone guy" to have him look into "going satellite." SIGH! While I have always really liked Lionel -- what I want in the morning is total hard core politics -- not eclectic. Lionel can converse about anything -- and I mean ANYTHING ... but as I'm getting ready to steel myself for the new day -- I want what Sam delivers -- total focus on political issues. Why can't Lionel go on the air on Sundays -- which needs a change-up, I allow -- but not at Sam's expense. I still totally miss Mike Malloy and Marc Maron. Boy, is this one of life's little ironies.

So....any bets on the shelf life of Randi "I'm To Nutty For My Clothes" Rhodes?

I'm sorry to see you leave the weekday slot on Air America. I've listened to you since you began your evening show and followed you to the morning show. You brought a great deal of useful information to the political debate and you were extremely entertaining in the process. Thanks for everything and good luck!

I cannot believe the injustice of getting rid of such a great show that did so much for the station especially when it was in chapter 11. They have made a GREAT MISTAKE. This is my FAVORITE SHOW on Air AMERICA. What a slap in the face. I do not get their thought process? If your ratings went up then why would they can the show? How high do they expect a time slot to be when most people are busy at work? Come on... unbelievable... I can't get over how wrong this is. The mornings are going to be a drag without the Same Seder show... I'll listen on Sundays though so at least Sammy still can be heard on a great show. Now Seder can start his campaign in running for president!

I listened to Lionel a few times, and then one day I heard him go off on a rant about how people have to stop being so "politically correct."

He was complaining that people were mad about a bunch of white college fraternity kids in the south "celebrating" Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day by dressing up as "pimps and hos" and eating fried chicken and watermelon, etc.

He argued that people were wrong to be offended, that it was just good clean fun, etc.

I haven't listened to that idiot since.

Once again the marketers that advise corporate heads got it wrong. I listen to Air America because of ideology not to be entertained. It's great when I get both, like a did with Sam, but don't give me fluff. Which it sounds like Lionel believes I want.

Sam's new show sounds interesting. And I will try to tune it in.

Best of luck Sam!

I'm beginning to believe that Air Amaerica doesn't really want to be a liberal radio station. They want to appeal to the moderates and be a nice alternative to right-wing radio. Just look at who they have gotten rid of recently - Mike Malloy, Marc Maron and now Sam. They weren't always nice. Rhandi and Rachel will only get to stay as long as their ratings stay high. Most of the shows on now are pure liberal Macaroni and Cheese (especially this new Lionel guy). Personally I prefer meat.

In a surprise move, talk show veteran Lionel has been tapped to take over Sam Seder's 9A-12P ET midday slot on Air America Radio, beginning May 14, according to radio industry news site All Access.

"Lionel will be an eclectic mixture of current events and off-the-wall topics infused with his special brand of humor," said Air America President Mark Green. "Because he's one of the biggest names in talk radio, Lionel will be a very important addition to our line-up and affiliate base."

"Air America is about one thing: radio. Not about ideology; but democracy. Radio that's an alternative to the usual, bumper sticker Rush wannabe. Radio that's listenable," said Lionel. "My goal is to garner and gather listeners. If you've got a radio, I'm your guy. Listeners want smart, funny, thoughtful, thinking, entertaining talk radio. With that in mind, my first show for Air America will be 'Great Polkas of the 20th Century.'"

Lionel, who's real name is Michael Lebron, has a nighttime show that is currently syndicated via WOR Radio Network, and airs on stations across the country, including many progressive talkers. WOR is currently seeking a replacement for the time slot.

Seder will wrap up his weekday show this Friday and will soon debut a Sunday afternoon show, to air 4-7P ET.

I was soooooo relieved when Sam replaced Springer...now AAR is putting in someone I ALSO have never heard of, who sounds worse than Springer. Fuck Fuck Fuck! I carry my little portable radio around with me all day to listen to Sam and Randi...who are like very tasty bookends to mashed potatoes Thom. So I have also come to appreciate the brilliance of Thom without pizzazz. Since moving to the country in Maine 2 years ago, and not finding anyone yet to talk to about important progressive issues (will I ever)
...I came to cherish my radio that contained all of my "little best friends" that went everywhere with me. Listening to Sam express the same feelings I have, has made shoveling horse shit in the barn in the morning, strangely and appropriately SATISFYING...and I mean that as a huge complement. I have felt depressed and cranky since hearing this awful news, and I may have to turn over the poop management to my husband.

I am fucking pissed off. My mornings are ruined, beginning 4/16. But, of course I will be there listening for my fix on Sundays.

I podcast your show every day and listen to it when I come home from work at night--every night. I will never renew my premium subscription with Air America, which I now loathe. What are they trying to do, make themselves into a new NPR? I thought I'd quit when they let Marc Maron go, but this is the last straw. Sam Seder is the best, the funniest and sharpest guy on the radio, he conducts the best interviews (unlike Randi Rhodes, whose ego is too big to allow for a real interview), he has the nicest rapport with his producers, and on, and on, and on.... Damn air america to hell. Now I'll have to get a teevee again, to watch the Daily Show. Wow--how stupid can you get.

From a strictly selfish standpoint, I'm relieved that you are going to a weekly format. I would listen daily to Sam's show, frequently streaming through WWRL since the Air America stream rarely seemed to work anymore (but going w/the Sammy Cam when I could). It was the one thing I could listen to for information, and not get angry (NPR tends to make me very angry, especially Renee Montagne). I always looked forward to interviews, and was so excited when Sam started having Joe Conason on Fridays.

I recently finished grad school, found a job, and on Mondays, I have an early shift. So I was going to subscribe to Sam's show, my evening reward. I am so sad he's not going to be on daily. It's just not right.

Anyone who can make us laugh without letting go of the outrage does a special job. That they are pulling Sam off his is especially sad.

"Even for Mr. Imus, a nationally syndicated radio host who knows his way around an insult, it was a shocking remark, one that seemed to impugn both the physical and moral characteristics of a team composed mostly of black players.

What followed was a familiar dance for Mr. Imus and the media companies that profit from his ability to shock his way to big audiences: outrage, indignation and, eventually, the expression of deep regret.

Lionel is smart but willing to be banal enough to hold an audience, as he has been doing for years on NYC radio. This apparently represents some thought by the Greens and I hope their thinking is sound. That said, I will miss Sam from out here in L.A. where I got his show on Seattle's website. And I still mourn the Majority Report, which was the first seamless merging of the blogs with talk radio. I think that's why its bloggers that are decrying AAR's sheerly commercial decision. So let's see how a blog firestorm affects talk radio, over the single program extant which perfectly melded radio with blogs.

All the best, Sam. I would even watch cable if you were on it.

The endless trail of red herrings, by Zahir Ebrahim

...I once met Israel Shamir, curious to learn if he was for real or just another red-herring for clever deflection of conscionable peoples' efforts. What little I discovered from his autobiographical and very personal public speech that I attended at a local university a few years ago where he noted "Jews need a homeland [in Palestine] as much as fish need bicycles", made me realize that not all Israelis are blind sighted - that moral traditions are still alive among them! Just that there are too few of these outspoken precious gems (here is another whose family even gave up their Israeli citizenship by choice as victims of their own conscience when they woke up from their Zionist slumber, once again demonstrating that actions speak louder than laments)! Each of them often tends to acquire the magic instantly affixing label of "self-hating Jew", and their political positions conveniently labeled anti-Semitic...

http://humanbeingsfirst.blogspot.com/2007/03/endless-red-herrings.html

As a polite courtesy to the prominent intellectuals and peace activists whose positions are illustratively dissected here to demonstrate the endless trail of red herrings inherent in the very premise of any allowable discourse on this subject in the West, even in the so called dissent space, I sent them an earlier version of this article for comment. Only the erstwhile Noam Chomsky responded. We went back and forth a few times. I remained unconvinced of his continued tortuous "practicality" arguments and suggested to him that he might voice them publicly in response to my article vastly opening up the discourse space....

Very long article, with many informative links.

Sam, I am dumbfounded as to why you would be removed from the 9AM slot. I love your analysis, humor and intelligence. You keep politics at an entertaining level as well understandable to us. They have on Armstrong Williams before you and they keep him on? (I just can't believe some of the things he says). And to top it off they put you on a Sunday Slot? What's next 5AM on Sunday? This doesn't make sense? What kind of sane management decision is this? If they do not feel that you are talented enough as well as intelligent to attract an audience, then what is talent? I hope that a large protest campaign can be formed to change this unfair decision. I know I will send a letter! It's just really annoying. (AN AVERAGE VIEWER)

April 9, 2007 -- With the French presidential election on April 22 and neo-cons everywhere anxious to see one of their own, Nicolas Sarkozy, garner a majority of the vote in the first of two elections, Sarkozy has, in a major blow to his fortunes, tipped his hand on a theme common to neo-con politicians in France, the United States, Canada, Australia, Britain, and other countries -- their fascination with, defense of, and participation in pedophilia and pedophilic rituals. In an interview with a French magazine, Sarkozy said he is "inclined to think that people are born pedophiles, and that it is also a problem that we do not know how to manage."

In one sentence, Sarkozy has echoed the furtive beliefs of the North American Man-Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) and its neo-con adherents in the Republican Party, fraternal secret societies, and the seamier side of the Judeo-Christian fundamentalist Right that pedophilia is somehow genetic and, therefore, more common than thought and acceptable. Sarkozy goes so far as to suggest that society does not know how to "manage" pedophiles -- a signal that Sarkozy, who has demonized Muslims and African immigrants in France and has called for their "management" through registration and detention, puts them into a category lower than pedophiles. Sarkozy has done more to expose the bizarre and reprehensible sexual beliefs of the neo-cons than has any other right-wing politician since the Nazi racialist perverts ruled Germany.

Who is Lionel?

Lionel is a so-called Libertarian. He hates being classified as a Liberal. For sure he is not. He once praised Bush for being a deeply religious man. He has spoken about his respect for Rush Limbaugh. He despises the Kennedy's.

Lionel has major issues with women. He referred to Rachel Maddow as a, "thick necked Lesbian". He called Monica Lewinsky, "a fat pig" on numerous occasions. Sexist remarks are a main staple on Lionel.

Furthermore, Lionel, whose real name is Michael Lebron, speaks the Queens English to the point of snobbery. This reveals someone who is very insecure. He has spoken about his whiteness and his son's whiteness. This is also a red flag red flag of insecurity.

The name Lebron is actually Puerto Rican. Apparently, Lionel father does not speak english well.

Look! Lionel is very much like Chris Mathews. They are worshipers of powerful men and highly chauvinistic against women.

Which ever way the wind blows you will find them both. They have no spine.

The willful decisions of both Bush administrations, the Blair government in the UK, and the Howard government in Australia in failing to curtail pedophilia activities among top office holders, military officers, and diplomats is a result of their belief that child sex, including child prostitution, is as acceptable as less socially taboo sexual deviancies.

Sarkozy's Socialist Party opponent, Segolene Royal, the mother of four children, said she found Sarkozy's comments "surprising." Par for the course is more like it. Centrist candidate Francois Bayrou was shocked by Sarkozy's comments, finding them "chilling." The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Paris, Andre Vingt-Trois, also condemned Sarkozy's comments.

The global corporate media, which is already celebrating Sarkozy's ascension to the Elysee Palace, is largely and ominously ignoring Sarkozy's prurient quote. It would come as a surprise to many WMR readers at the number of corporate journalists right here in the nation's capital who have been linked to pedophilia over the past two decades.

One question for those who support Sarkozy is: "If Sarkozy becomes President of France, what about the children?"

When we look over the cover-ups of Henry Kissinger- and G.H.W. Bush-endorsed Operation Condor's links with Colonia Dignidad pedophilia in Chile in the 1970s, U.S. government awareness of pedophilia at Jonestown in Guyana, the Georgetown Club, the Franklin/Omaha pedophile scandal, midnight tours of the White House for underage male prostitutes during the G.H.W. Bush administration, Mark Foley and Dennis Hastert, sexual molestation of children at Abu Ghraib, child prostitution in U.S. military occupation zones in the Balkans, and molestation of teens at Texas and Florida youth detention facilities involving political appointees of the Bush family, including a cover up in Texas initiated by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and his U.S. Attorneys, "loyal Bushies," in the state, we must, again, ask the question: What about the children?

I am heartbroken and angry. First Mike Malloy, then Mark Maron and now Sam Seder. I was okay with Al leaving because I still had Sam Seder, and I still had Mark Maron on Fridays. Now who is left that is funny: nobody! Is this new management out of their minds? I think they have no idea what they are doing! They want to make money and want success, but yet they've just made two incredibly stupid descisions. I doubt I will get Air American premium next year. I suppose I could get it just for Rhandi Rhodes. She's the only amazing star left now. I wish this new management realized that not everyone is entertained by Ed Schultz or Thom Hartman. Some of us liberals need something beyond mainstream. Why didn't they choose one of the mediocre ones like Rachel Maddow? I just can't get over this: Sam Seder is the most brilliant rock star - do they not get that? And they could have given Mark Maron his own show. Some of us need comedy relief and Sam and Mark are the only ones you had for listeners like me.This station's been ruined in my opinion. All the fun is lost. I am so sad right now. It's bad enough I have to constantly call my senators to do what is right - now liberal radio can't even be saved. It just goes to show you, rich people who run things have no clue what gives the heart joy. They sure know how to ruin it for the rest of us though, don't they? The new AAR management sucks big time.

Maybe the fools who are now running AAR should change the name of it to DLC Radio or Air Corporate America. Weekday mornings will be empty without you. Sam Seder is part of the NetRoots movement. I consider this move to limit Sam's voice as an attempt to dampen down the progressive movement and the netroots. Sam took on the establishment and challenged the democratic party to do more. He pushed us to be active in making our voices heard and challenge the status quo. He was an important part of the Democrats victory in 2006. Make no mistake this is an attempt to limit the voice of the progressive movement.

And right after that, I also had a disturbing thought that, "What if corporatocracy is buying them out in order to control the network and shut us up?" I dismissed my thought as conspiracy paranoia. Now I find myself rethinking that idea, since hearing that Lionel is going to "replace" (?!?!?!)Sam. I've heard it said that even some paranoid people have valid things to be paranoid about. Am I the only one who questions the Greens' motives? I already miss you, Sam!

Sam...I think it sucks that AAR is moving your show to Sundays. It proves they have no understanding of what people want.

It is because of you and Rachel Maddow that I initially became an AAR premium member.

When the company I work for moved to a better location and my XM radio actually worked during work hours, I was elated to know you were going to be on in the morning. You really helped my mornings pass at work.

You are an intelligent and well informed host. I will miss hearing you during the week.

Please consider going to the Nova M network and joining Mike Malloy. At the moment they SEEM committed to real progressive Bush challenging talk radio.

This is really horrible news. It's sad the see the most popular liberal radio station continue to go down this direction that will surely destroy whatever ratings and loyal listeners they have left. Their best evening host, Mike Malloy, was fired; their best early afternoon host, Al Franken, has just left; and now they get rid of their best morning host, Sam Seder? All they have left now is Randi Rhodes and who knows when they will get rid of her if she says something "too outrageous". Geez. I really wish there was a great liberal who would take over Air America. I don't understand the management or the politics that goes on at AAR, but they need to get their act together fast.

Kudos to Mike Malloy! He just spent his opening segment this hour talking about the "rat bastards" at AAR. He said they pushed out the Drobny's almost from the start. AAR, almost from the start, destroyed the brand, had an inability to understand talent and will cut your throat because they can. He had high praise for Sam and his radio talent and is angry that Sam is getting screwed over. Kathy just said she is working on getting Sam on the show. Listening to Malloy. Good rant about Sam and Imus.

Lionel has a munchkin voice. I have heard him but never so him til today. I was a little taken aback by his photo because I was expecting a short fat bald man by the sound of his voice.

He bloviates about himself as does Ed Schultz. Very impressed with himself. But that munchkin voice is just too much!

I would like to see Sam go to Nova M.

I hope Mike does interview Sam on his show. It'd be a great opening.

April 9, 2007 -- This web site has for some time sensed a certain synergism between so-called left-wing web sites (in reality, gatekeepers) like Daily Kos and Democratic Underground and those on the far right like Little Green Footballs and its grandmaster, FreeRepublic. Our attention has been drawn by our friends at ProgressiveIndependent.com to a concerted campaign by DailyKos and the LittleGreenFootball gremlins to censor writer and cartoonist Ben Heine for his cartoons and writings exposing the Nazi racialist ideology of Israeli politician Avigdor Lieberman. We are happy to provide a link to PI's screen captures of DailyKos that triggered the censorship by the "left" and right web sites.

We can sympathize with those who are banned by phony "progressive" web sites like DailyKos and DU. It appears that the same vested interests that call the shots at FreeRepublic and LittleGreenFootballs also do the same with DailyKos and DU. It can assuredly be said that WMR controls its own content and, although we have received demands that certain information be removed, we have often responded to such requests with a hearty "drop dead," whether the requests come from Saudi billionaire sheiks, U.S. defense contractors who torture prisoners, or Israeli right-wing expansionists.

Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) says he will not attend the Fox News/CBC presidential debate. Last week, John Edwards also said he won’t be participating.

UPDATE: Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) has also pulled out of the Fox debate.

Tours of duty for 15,000 U.S. Army troops extended. CNN’s Barbara Starr reports, “The Pentagon today, as we speak, is reviewing a request from commanders in Iraq for the extension of the tour of duty for up to 15,000 Army troops. four combat ground brigades. One combat aviation brigade. their tours might be extended up to 120 days. Why? Because the Pentagon has to find a way to keep that so-called troop surge going.”

Elliott Abrams behind Pelosi attacks? Jim Lobe writes, “There is little doubt among Middle East analysts here that [Deputy National Security Adviser Elliott] Abrams is playing a lead role in White House efforts to discredit Pelosi for meeting with Assad,” just as he did in a similar incident in 1987.

UPDATE: “At the one and only meeting between Imad Moustapha, the Syrian ambassador to the United States, and a White House official, one of President Bush’s closest advisers, Elliot Abrams, said the administration saw no good reason to ‘reward’ Syria by opening discussions.”

Waaaahhhh! Your show is not broadcast on the air in Seattle but I podcast your show everyday! You have one of the most informative shows outside of Thom Hartmann, but you are funnier by far. (Sorry Thom). Air America is making a big mistake by replacing you with crappy ol' Lionel. How could they make such a maketing disaster? Just watch advertising dollars fly out the window. You have many faithful fans who will follow you wherever you may be found. (Boo hoo for us for now).

This is unbeleiveable Sam. I am devastated. You are incredible. You have been absoloutly on fire the last month. That Jackie Mason schtick you did killed me. I have been listening to you on Air America for a long time. You are by far the best host on that network right now. When will AAR stop shitting on their listerners?

AP Poll: Congress approval up
By DAVID ESPO
AP SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

WASHINGTON -- Public approval for Congress is at its highest level in a year as Democrats mark 100 days in power and step up their confrontation with President Bush over his handling of the Iraq War, the issue that overshadows all others.

Yet for all their eagerness to challenge Bush, congressional Democrats so far have failed to attract significant support among independents, a group that helped propel them to power in last fall's elections and now appears more strongly opposed to the war than the general public.

The findings from an AP-Ipsos nationwide poll provide a snapshot of public sentiment in the days after the House and Senate triggered a series of veto threats from the president by passing separate bills that provide funds for the war, yet also call for the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops.

Overall approval for Congress is 40 percent. The survey shows Bush's approval ratings remain in the mid-30 percent range, that a striking 39 percent strongly disapproves his handling of foreign policy and the war on terror, and that the public has scant hopes that the president and Congress can work together to solve the country's problems.

"The Democrats are back," Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the first woman speaker in history, had exulted on Jan. 3 as her party claimed control for the first time in more than a decade.

I am watching Air America implode from within, without the right wing media needing to lift a finger. Maron and Seder and Malloy, this was a venture with much promise. Good luck to the new owners with the logo that means little without the talent.
