Announcing

It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that this week will be the last week of the Sam Seder Show on Air America. As you know, Air America recently came out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy and the new management wants to go in a different direction with the 9-Noon (est) time slot. However, as much as I would like to spend more time with Alberto Gonzales’ family, he will be doing so shortly, freeing me up to do a Sunday afternoon show on Air America Radio. The show is tentatively known as Seder on Sundays and I am excited to get it started.

I am very proud of the three years I have broadcast on Air America Radio. I am particularly proud of the Sam Seder Show. We started the show as AAR was entering bankruptcy, when things around here were pretty hectic and insecure. The Sam Seder juggernaut, as no one but me called us, was able to maintain all of our affiliates that stayed with the progressive format through our bankruptcy. While it’s a bit early to judge, (our first full “book” is out in a couple of weeks) our ratings were looking pretty good and we dramatically increased AAR’s streaming numbers during this time slot. Most importantly, though, was the support and response we received from you, our audience. You'll never know just how helpful and motivating your comments, calls, emails and letters have been to me and my family and I greatly appreciate it.

I hope all of you will join me when I begin the Sunday show in the next month and a half or so. Of course, I’ll be maintaining this blog and continuing to promise to fix it. ( I mean it this time, I am serious!) I actually have some rather large plans for this site and its offerings but am not prepared to discuss them at the moment.

Anyway, over the next week I’ll be posting more about my plans, this site, Seder on Sundays and reflecting upon the last three years.

My email address is posted in the left hand column of this blog— drop me an email if you want to receive updates in the future. And tune in this week! I really don’t know how I am going to break this to Dewey.

Terrible news, terrible business move. I really can't understand any of AAR's host choices from Unfiltered (we'll, that was just $$$), Morning Sedition (Maron in Howard Stern's spot just as he moved to satellite, are you kidding me) to Malloy, and now this.

The only explanation I can think of is that now that the Democratic party halfway has its act together the ol' lefty circular firing squad has been getting jobs in radio management.

Well, I guess this is it. Time to take 1600 off the car radio preset at the end of the week.

One bright spot: Maybe now the country can get the Seder and Maron / Maron and Seder show it's been needing.

I guess 1 of the irrelevant people at jones network might join. I really have the feeling that Sam's impending firing has to do with Ed Schultz and pissing off a few big money DLC democrats.

___________________________________

Indeed Anonymous you're right. But I think it also goes back to Joe Lieberman. Sam gave Ned Lamont a voice, and he nearly unseated Lieberman.

Furthermore, Sam's choice for journalists were not from mainstream media. He had real journalist such as Max Blumenthal and Sy Hersh. Also there is no doubt that Sam is responsible making the blogesphere a force to be reckoned with. Treating Blogger's such as Markos and Duncan Black with integrity probably didn't set well with the DLC.

Apparently, not playing footsy with the mainstream media like the Young Turks, Rachel Maddow, and Mark Riley was a no no. What point is there to an alternative media, if you are elevating the same old liars from mainstream? I was appalled when Rachel brought Howard Kurtz on her show. But then again she also had Tucker Carlson on.

There is no doubt that the new Air America wants a Republican bent to it's lineup. Cenk, from the Young Turks, was a Reagan Republican. Ed Schultz is a failed Republican candidate for congress. He is an also a bully opportunist. He found greener pastures from playing a Democrat, which he is not, and, has never been.

You cannot permit Air America to do this to Sam. As Alexander Cockburn said recently on Cspan, and I am Paraphrasing here, "the left gets outraged, but they never complete the fight. "The right is wrong, but they keep on fighting." Cockburn is correct. The right has destroyed the military, the economy, education, journalism and Habeas Corpus, but they insist that they will prevail.

We owe Sam. We owe him big time. You need to email every friend, relative, and co-worker. Ask them to email Air America. Furthermore email every progressive website you can think of. Also, please call Air America and register a complaint.

Without Sam, there is absolutely no reason to listen to Air America.

Hey There Sam!

Just wanted to say that you'll be sorely missed during our weekday mornings and best of luck on your new Sunday slot venture! Before you go, I just wanted to remind your audience and provide some clarity around just what the last election was all about! It was about the anger and outrage of the masses in this country directed against those who so callously wrap themselves in the flag and then go behind "closed doors" and use the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights as toilet paper. It was about terminating with extreme prejudice the structural harm that the neo-cons and their selfish misguided agenda are doing to our country. It wasn't about consensus, compromise or negotiation, it was about putting these guys into a headlock until they collapse. I would even say that in some cases it was about stepping on their necks with our boots until they pass out! It was about removing the fattened, administration friendly pigs of our out of control military industrial complex from the trough of precious newly minted, debt supported, taxpayer dollars. It was and still is about restoring the integrity, dignity & honor of the office of the Presidency by immediately beginning impeachment proceedings against all those in this cockroach infested, incestuous administration... Have no illusions, that's what the last election was about!!!

The move of the Sam Seder Show to Sundays is a huge mistake on the part of Air America. When Al Fraken left, I said to myself, at least I can still listen to Sam everyday. Sam is the only person left who adds comedy to politics, which makes it so much more interesting. I’ve learned so much by listening each day and my vocabulary has greatly expanded. I’ve been impressed with Sam Seder from Day 1 and don’t understand why Air America would make such a ridiculous move after having him Sam on the air after 3 years. I hope everyone who listens during the week will also follow Sam on Sundays to prove to the suits at Air America that his show is the best one on the station.

/this is the comment I sent on "contact us" page of AAR.

Ok - so yesterday a caller called into Sam Seder and said something like "I have heard a rumor about you maybe not begin on AAR?" Sam of course being the smart astute individual that he is - ensured that his answer was both honest and accurate.

I must say - as new owners - surely you have a clue as to where your future lies. It is with Sam Seder - He is the best voice you have on this network - you should be sloting him into the most exposed place and working him on the syndicated circuit. I tell you - I know that alot of people ask for mark maron, etc. But Sam is your future. Sure there is alot of new talent to be tested. I have been with AAR from the beginning listening over 12 hours a day, premuim, bought XM, and stream (because the 1260 in DC sucks) etc.

I do not throw out idol threats but if you jeopardize Sam Seder show - I will make it my mission in life to ensure all of the progressives I know - do not listen to you.

Making changes to Sam would be the biggest mistake. He is the brighest most intelligent (un egotistical - unlike Randi) person you have. Actually I am a little miffed that he is not on here in DC 1260 so I stream and podcast. You should do everything in your power to market him and that he is the voice of intelligent progressive radio. If you do not - then you have already lost before you start

Another poor business decision by Air America management. All they have to do now is get rid of Rachel & Randi and perhaps just have Ed Schultz bellowing hunting stories 24 hours a day. I would rather be run over by an H2 than listen to that nonsense. Regardless, I am cancelling my XM because AAR is cancelling you.
Thanks again and good luck to you!

Bob Geiger has the Senate hearing schedule up at his blog, and one particular hearing note caught my eye:

But the meeting to watch this week takes place Wednesday when Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) presides over a hearing entitled “Responding to The Inspector General’s Findings of Improper Use of National Security Letters by the FBI” in Judiciary's Constitution subcommittee. Feingold may be the Senate's biggest foe of how Team Bush has trashed the U.S. Constitution and this one could be good for some fireworks.

The hearing is scheduled for April 11 at 2:30 pm ET, and I'm hoping that it will be televised for public scrutiny. Indeed, and given the track record of our Attorney General and some of the other Bush fealty minions who ought to have been providing safeguards for civil liberties rather than rubber stamps for roughshod behavior, it ought to be a very, very interesting hearing about a topic which has, for too long in this Administration, been unmentionable.

Never before in U.S. history, we believe, has a president so readily exploited a crisis to amass unchecked and unreviewed power unto himself, completely at odds with the Constitution. This departure from historical practice should deeply concern those in both parties who care for the Constitution. Even in military matters, Congress has considerable authority. For instance, the Constitution specifies that Congress can "make Rules for Government and Regulation of the land and naval Forces." Military intelligence, military surveillance and military detention are all matters on which Congress can dictate the terms of how the commander-in-chief's power is exercised.
Debates at the 1787 Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, and in the state ratifying conventions that ensued, conclusively undercut the current administration's claim to unaccountable power. Alexander Hamilton, the founding era's foremost advocate of executive vigor, disdained efforts to equate the new president's authority with the broad powers of the English monarchs. And even assuming that Hamilton was wrong in asserting that presidents have less power than English kings, the British monarchy had in fact been stripped of power to "suspend" parliamentary laws after the Glorious Revolution of 1688, about 100 years before the Constitutional Convention. The Constitution simply contains no unfettered executive authority to annul laws on a president's security-related say-so.

Hi Sam,

Good grief! What the hell is going on with the Green brothers? As they say here in Tennessee, they have "shit for brains." Now that Al is gone, your program is the only daily offering on AA I now consider essential. I have no need for my Premium Service anymore.

Anyway Sam, I appreciate the many hours of pleasure your programs have provided to me and wish you well.

By coincidence I saw "Next Stop Wonderland" the other night on the TV and recognized you. You were great, but no Italian, that's for sure.

See you on Sundays.

OMG,
tell me it ain't so... i thought with new management, AA would stop shooting itself in the foot... the old regime did the unthinkable in removing one of their strongest voices: Mike Malloy... and then, one no their most entertining and creative voices: Mike Moran and team... What is wrong with these suits? DO THEY EVER LISTEN TO RADIO? DO THEY KNOW WHAT MAKES GOOD RADIO?

To the Greens: why don't you consult with real listeners instead of high-paid consultants? How can you remove Sam Seder and are you still going to hang on to Armstrong?
Sam should be kept right where he is and if u want a change, bring back Mike Moran and maybe, try teaming him up with Greenfield...

This is so very upsetting... i can't tell you how many college aged students i have been able to get to listen to Air America by recommending that they tune into the Sam Seder show....

Is there any other radio station that changes the hosts so often? Is there any other station that so stupidly dismisses their hosts after they have spent considerable time fine-tuning their show and successfully developing a new and loyal following?
I am so afraid that the next person to go is going to be Randi -- after all, she is very liberal, very good and is amassing a divergent and loyal audience...

This is so discouraging.

"the kind of liberals that even liberals don't like to hang out with"

Good turn of a phrase, Solitary. Is it yours? I'm a liberal; I used to live in San Francisco, and I knew those sorts of people. (Most of them lived in Marin County, actually.) The type who were always so earnest, who wouldn't talk about good restaurants because they served meat, but would go on about their feelings for hours. I'm a Prius-driving, latte-making, fine-wine-appreciating lib, but I'm also a union member who's not afraid to say "FUCK" loudly, especially when I'm slagging Rethuglicans. (I can't stand Ed Schultz, though.)

AAR needs more people like Sam who can speak about the liberal side of things without being all whiny and boring. Too bad it's shit-canning them. Management shot itself in the foot with Malloy, shot itself in the guts with Sam, and now I'm wondering how it will finally drill itself right between the eyes.

Ack! No! Sam CAN'T LEAVE! He is my favorite on Air America. First we lose Al Franken and now this!?!?! The only only left that I really like is Rachel Maddow.

Thom Hartman is smart but a bit dull and a bit too much of a socialist. (Tariffs? Please.)

Randy Rhodes is also smart but a bit shrill. Too much like Mike Myer's Coffee talk character.

Jon Elliot, Ecotalk, and Politically Direct are snoozers. (At least Politically direct has some interesting guests.)

Well, the Young Turks have been growing on me. Cenk has got some balls. Air America needs more loud confident people like Sam & Cenk.

How can a station come to the conclusion that Mark Maron, Janeane Garofalo, and Sam Seder should not be radio regulars?!?

All three of them, could make their audience think while they were splitting a gut in laughter.

When a rational person looks at the state of America one can either laugh or cry; AAR is killing off the laughter option.

LISTEN UP EVERYONE...AAR IS REPLACING SAM WITH...GET THIS...LIONEL! WTF?!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lionel_(radio_talk_show_host)

This is via a radio industry website...

LIONEL, the veteran talker who has been in syndication through WOR RADIO NETWORKS, joins AIR AMERICA RADIO for 9a-Noon ET, beginning MAY 14. LIONEL (real name MICHAEL LEBRON) replaces SAM SEDER, who moves to 4-7p ET SUNDAYS; his last weekday show will air FRIDAY (4/13).

"LIONEL will be an eclectic mixture of current events and off-the-wall topics infused with his special brand of humor," said AAR President MARK GREEN. "Because he's one of the biggest names in talk radio, LIONEL will be a very important addition to our line-up and affiliate base."

"AIR AMERICA is about one thing: radio. Not about ideology; but democracy. Radio that's an alternative to the usual, bumper sticker RUSH wannabe. Radio that's listenable," said LIONEL. "My goal is to garner and gather listeners. If you've got a radio, I'm your guy. Listeners want smart, funny, thoughtful, thinking, entertaining talk radio. With that in mind, my first show for AIR AMERICA will be 'Great Polkas of the 20th Century.'

I've listened to bits and pieces of his show and I'd hardly define it as liberal. My understanding is he's more of a libertarian. Anyone have any more info on this guy and his show? I know he's currently on some AAR stations at night.

A long-term hunger strike has broken out at the American detention center at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, with more than a dozen prisoners subjecting themselves to daily force-feeding to protest their treatment, military officials and lawyers for the detainees say.

Lawyers for several hunger strikers said their clients’ actions were driven by harsh conditions in a new maximum security complex. About 160 of the roughly 385 Guantánamo detainees have been moved to the complex since December.

Thirteen detainees are now on hunger strikes, the largest number to endure the force-feeding regimen on an extended basis since early 2006, when the military broke a long-running strike with a new policy of strapping prisoners into restraint chairs while they are fed by plastic tubes inserted through their nostrils.

Republicans may be forced to filibuster Bush's Swift Boat nominee Michael Roston
Published: Monday April 9, 2007

If Senate Democrats succeed in invoking an obscure law on recess appointees, Republicans may be forced to filibuster nominee Sam Fox, the controversial pick for Ambassador to Belgium that President George W. Bush appointed last week during the Senate's easter break. If they don't, the president could face a significant defeat in the Senate chamber.

A Senate Democratic aide confirmed to RAW STORY that some Senate Democrats were pushing to invoke legislation requiring the President to send recess appointees back to the Senate for an up or down vote within 40 days of the appointment.

"If it works out, the nomination would definitely be defeated on the Senate floor," the Democratic aide told RAW STORY. "The Republicans might not want to let that pass, and then they'd be in the strange position of filibustering their own nominee."

This is from Air America:

AIR AMERICA ADDS THE POPULAR "LIONEL" TO LINEUP
Statement:

AIR AMERICA ADDS THE POPULAR "LIONEL" TO LINEUP

NEW YORK – April 9, 2007 – Air America Radio, which celebrated its third year anniversary last week, announced today changes in its programming schedule beginning May 14.

*Lionel -- Veteran radio talk-show host Lionel will bring his nationally syndicated program to Air America M-F, 9am-12 noon ET. He has been performing talk radio for 18 years, starting as a mere caller while in law school in his home town of Tampa and was later given his own weekend show in 1988 on 970 WFLA. Currently heard on 92 stations across the country, Lionel is the #1 rated talk host during his time period in New York, as he was previously in Los Angeles and Tampa.

"Lionel will be an eclectic mixture of current events and off-the-wall topics infused with his special brand of humor," said new Air America President Mark Green. "Because he's one of the biggest names in talk radio, Lionel will be a very important addition to our line-up and affiliate base.”

"Air America is about one thing: radio. Not about ideology; but democracy. Radio that’s an alternative to the usual, bumper sticker Rush wannabe. Radio that’s listenable," said Lionel. "My goal is to garner and gather listeners. If you’ve got a radio, I’m your guy. Listeners want smart, funny, thoughtful, thinking, entertaining talk radio. With that in mind, my first show for Air America will be 'Great Polkas of the 20th Century.'

*Seder on Sunday -- Sam Seder will be moving to Sunday afternoons, 4-7pm ET, with a brand new show, “Seder on Sunday", which will be a recap and review of the Sunday morning talk shows. Seder will focus on two areas that are of high interest to him and AAR listeners -- the networks and the netroots, with a special emphasis on bloggers as guests.

"Sam Seder has been integral to the Air America family since its inception,” said Green. “We're delighted that he'll be staying to launch a new show on Sunday afternoons, where he'll bring his brand of humor and humanity to his favorite subjects of the Sunday political talkfests and the blogosphere. Let the Punditocracy beware!"

"To quote the Carpenters, 'We've only just begun' -- and look forward to more announcements shortly about our 2.0 vision."

Lionel?! OMG! I listen to him on the KQKE from 12-2am. I'll tune in if nothing interesting on coasttocoastam. He replaced Malloy (fortunately Malloy is back on this station from 6-9pm). Sometimes Lionel is interesting and other times he's an obnoxious yutz. I'd pick Seder any day over Lionel but it's owner's choice kiddies. Glad that Sam is still on even if it's one day a week. I really hated AAR when they booted Maron. Morning Sedition was one of the most brilliant, hilarious, radio shows I'd ever heard in my 61 years but I guess brilliant doesn't pay the bills. His stand-up is doing quite well thank you very much and AAR is all the poorer for it. Now Maron no longer wants to associate himself with AAR. Their loss. Anyway, Stephanie Miller is a good substitute for the Sedition. Hartmann was as good a choice for Al as possible (sure do miss Tom Oliphant though). He's not as entertaining but is very informative. I've learned quite a lot from listening to his show. Rachel Maddow ranks right up there in my top five but her show wouldn't be quite as good without her sidekick Kent Jones. Sometimes it's a toss-up between Randi and Big Ed. Schultz does far more interviews than Randi. I like Randi but frequently it seems her callers are there to jog her memory so she can talk over them rather than letting them make their point. So if I want to listen to Randi I stream her from WWRL. Ed Schulz is on the KQKE line-up. Sometimes I have both on and switch back and forth.

Anyway, Mazel Tov Sam and as the old saying goes "The best revenge is success"!

Krugman: 'Right-wing noise machine' reverts to its 'little lies' roots RAW STORY
Published: Monday April 9, 2007

The "right-wing noise machine" has returned to its roots, New York Times columnist Paul Krugman argues in Monday's paper, as "little lies" that were in vogue before the attacks of 9/11 have sprouted up again, aided in large part by media outlets friendly to the Bush Administration.

Krugman believes that there is a "political lesson I don't think has sunk in: the power of the Little Lie -- the small accusation invented out of thin air, followed by another, and another, and another. Little Lies aren't meant to have staying power. Instead, they create a sort of background hum, a sense that the person facing all these accusations must have done something wrong."

"The Clinton years were a parade of fake scandals: Whitewater, Troopergate, Travelgate, Filegate, Christmas-card-gate," Krugman continues. "Each pseudoscandal got headlines, air time and finger-wagging from the talking heads. The eventual discovery in each case, that there was no there there, if reported at all, received far less attention. The effect was to make an administration that was, in fact, pretty honest and well run -- especially compared with its successor -- seem mired in scandal."

...while the French Revolution electrified England, already in a state of advanced political struggle over workers' rights, and those of enslaved Africans, it also produced a certain discourse that, through successive mutations, has become pervasive - and here I'm drawing from Dror Wahrman's book Inventing the Middle Class. For, it was agreed by opponents and foes in the intelligentsia that the French Revolution corresponded to a precise social referent, that of "middle class". Where Burke thought these people were destructive, selfish and nihilistic, the Scottish philosophe Mackintosh saw them as the source of liberalism and antipathy to prejudice. He argued that the middle rank were the repository of "almost all the sense and virtue of society".

Sam SHOULD be on MS-NBC ...
absolutely. It would be awesome to have him there helping them establish the Anti-fox and Anti-Beck.

Wow! Air America makes another stupid decision! I thought the Green Bros were gonna run things more wisely.
Sam is my favorite host on AA. I will be listening to the Sunday show, but still, what a loss... a stupid & unneccasary loss.
We will miss you, Sam! I hope to hear you someday on a network that appreciates what a valuable progressive voice you are.

Hey, if Clinton wins, won't someone have to take her spot in New York?

If Franken can do it...?

Ok...I thought maybe the Golden Dawn had some "thing" about #7....those are interesting recordings...& great pdf files too...Did you see the one about Dr. Strangelove & game theory?

...
Most people considered Dr Strangelove to be a far-fetched creation, exaggerated for satirical purposes. The facts suggest otherwise. During the mid 1950s a mysterious figure with a Hungarian accent, his crippled body confined to a wheelchair, would be whisked by limousine from his bed at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington to the White House. Here, President Eisenhower, who had previously commanded the entire Allied forces in Europe during the Second World War, would listen intently to the suggestions of his secret strategic advisor, a man who had never even been in the army. The meeting over, the wheelchair-bound figure would be sped back to his hospital room. Here, two armed guards were posted at his door night and day, and he was attended only by naval nurses with top-security clearance. The patient was becoming increasingly deranged and would frequently wake shrieking and babbling in the night. His military minders were there to ensure that any secrets he blurted out would not find their way to a foreign power.
This was John von Neumann, a brilliant Hungarian who was responsible for major breakthroughs in several intellectual fields, from pure mathematics to practical economics. Indeed, in 1944 he was convinced that he had found a method which ‘solved’ economics.

Taking AirAmerica in a new direction ??? Yeah, spinning out of conrol down the toilet of radio history!!! I cannot fathom the utter stupidity of the BeeGees (Brothers Green) in canceling Sam's morning show. I have supported AirAmerica since Day ONE through ups, downs and bankruptcy. I even pay that monthly fee so I can be an AirAmerica premium subscriber. NO MORE !!! Once I have downloaded Sam's last show, I will be canceling my AirAmerica premium subscription.

Ditto! - Especially since you can download Ring of Fire for free...

Sam - have rights to your show and free downloads like ROF

Come Monday - April 16, the premium subscription I just renewed will be cancelled. I mean shit - you can't even use it with Thom Hartman

State Dept. Blows Off Waxman’s Niger Inquiry, Falsely Claims Rice Has ‘Answered In Full’
Today, House Government Reform and Oversight Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) wrote another letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice requesting her testimony regarding President Bush’s claims that Iraq attempted to procure uranium from Niger. Waxman writes that his previous letters to Rice produced “an insufficient response from the State Department’s Legislative Affairs office.”

BC cartoonist dies while drawing
Cartoonist Johnny Hart, who won awards and acclaim for creating the BC comic strip, has died at the age of 76.

BC, which depicts a world populated by cavemen and dinosaurs, first appeared in 1958 and eventually reached more than 100 million people.

Mr Hart also co-created The Wizard of Id, the story of a run-down kingdom ruled by a tyrannical monarch.

Mr Hart's wife, Bobby, said he died of a stroke on Saturday while working at his New York home.

"He died at his storyboard," she told the Associated Press.
