US farm group slams US-Brazil ethanol cooperation

President George W Bush’s plan to join hands with Brazil in boosting alternative fuels would deal a serious blow to American farmers, ranchers and taxpayers, a US farm group said on Friday.

Tom Buis, president of the National Farmers Union, which represents smaller US farm interests, warned that Bush’s proposal would redirect resources that could be used to feed a nascent boom in ethanol production at home.

“Using US taxpayer dollars to encourage new ethanol production in foreign countries will only directly compete with production right here at home,” Buis said in a statement.

“This agreement is the wrong step in the wrong direction at the wrong time,” he added.

Bush was the subject of a two-hour roasting by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Friday night.

Chavez addressed about 2,000 supporters at a soccer stadium in Buenos Aires, bashing the president whom he called a "political cadaver" who is on his way to becoming "cosmic dust."

The fiery Venezuelan leader led the crowd in chants of "Gringo go home," and described Bush as "the little gentleman from the north," and as an "imperial boss" who has no business in the "heroic lands of our America."

Dear trapped by a wicked character Kevin,

its about time you are facing up to the fact that you are way over your head here. No wonder you are riddled with confusion. But I have got that feeling that you all deserve each other. Play your cards right and you all can walk into the sunset together.

So Don't be a fool.
What makes you think your fiancee didn't set up this little test with Mumsie herself? I suggest you resist the lying cad inside you waiting to come out. Charm your fiancee with this cute little story the moment you arrive at her doorstep, praise the beauty and guts of her mother, and then invite them all for a lovely bonding session at the best restaurant in town... so you all can have a good laugh together.

Of course, you should not leave out your little condom joke. When told with flair it will be the hit of the evening I assure you.

However, not for a second should you then believe that you are now in the clear. Not for a long shot!

So watch out! When you least expect it your father-in-law will hit on you ... hard. It may be during the discussion of finances in his dimly-lit office, it may be in the private stateroom on that upcoming fishing trip to Baja, or during your next man-to-man talk at the triple lutz sodden Uneven Bar.

Good Luck! And be prepared for a long, bumpy and fab ride.

SAN CRISTO'BAL DE LAS CASAS, Chis. - Members of an indigenous group opposed
to the long-quiescent Zapatista rebels beat two reporters from alternative
media outlets as they were covering a rally in Chiapas.

There also were initial reports that La Jornada newsman Hermann
Bellinghausen had been held by the demonstrators for several hours
Wednesday, but the newspaper's directors told EFE that Bellinghausen denied
that version of events.

Reporters that had been in the area confirmed that two of their colleagues,
Alonso Luna Giro'n from Enlace Civil, and Carlos Va'zquez Guzma'n of Promedios-
Chiapas, were beaten by the indigenous who were staging a demonstration in
the municipality of Ocosingo.

Over 500 Landless farmers, most of them women, from the Via Campesina (Peasant Way) and the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais sem Terra (Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais sem Terra (Landless Rural Workers’ Movement or the MST) invaded and briefly occupied an iron ore mine, a bank and a sugar mill on Wednesday to protest the impact of big companies on the poor and President Bush’s visit to Brazil. A press release issued by Via Campesina said that their protest was meant as a statement “against transnational companies and the financial system, which seek control of the natural resources in the country.”

I was a member of the Libertarian Party for two decades. I quit when the party got taken over by Republicans who understood that the LP was leeching votes from them. Today, most of the folks who claim to be libertarians are not libertarians at all. They are the folks who have accepted Laissez-faire capitalism as their personal Jesus.

How does it go? "Onward christian soldiers, marching as to war" This is why shit like Jesus Camp scares me. It's all subtle (or not) motivation towards conflict in the name of god, and that sucks.

It's not about Jesus. It's how you can pervert someones dearest profound beliefs into support for your venal Republican desires.

Waiting for Cicero said...

Sorry. It wasn't meant to be a direct criticism of Christianity. I have a huge problem with people using religion to subvert the will of others, particularly, as an incitement to violence. Christianity is definitely not the only religion that's been perverted in this way.

As for the Libertarian thing: When I to the political compass test, I scored (-9.56, -9.63), so I am about as left, and about as libertarian as it gets.

From TPMmuckraker:

Dem Rep: Hastings Should "Absolutely" Be Investigated
By Paul Kiel - March 10, 2007, 12:03 PM

Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA), speaking on a Washington NPR affiliate, KUOW, said yesterday that he "absolutely" supports an ethics investigation of Rep. Doc Hastings (R-WA), the ranking member of the House ethics committee. "I think that whole situation is just incredibly troubling," he said, "the line was clearly crossed."

Smith was referring, of course, to Hastings' former chief of staff Ed Cassidy's call to then-U.S. Attorney John McKay shortly after the 2004 election. McKay testifed last Tuesday that he was "concerned and dismayed" by the call, during which Cassidy asked him whether his office was investigating allegations of Democratic voter fraud in the gubernatorial election, which the Democrat had very narrowly won

But as we pointed out earlier this week, it's a relatively meaningless gesture for a member of the House to express support for an ethics investigation unless he or she actually follows through and files a complaint -- refers the complaint against Hastings from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. Will Smith do that?

And every time I think I've figured it out a bit more, I find a half dozen other mindsets I have which suck. I wish I'd started building a different thought process at a younger age. Changing habits is harder than building them.

ok, I'm sold on Chavez. Check this out:

One of the greatest rebels, who I really admire: Christ. He was a rebel. He ended up being crucified. He was a great rebel. He rebelled against the established power that subjugated. That is what rebellion is; it's rebellion out of love for human beings. In truth, that is the cause, the cause of love: love for every human being, for every women, for every child, for every man, for every brother.

I believe you to be a brother. I don't see you as above or below. I don't feel superior or inferior to you. We're on an equal basis. Your cameraman, your photograph are equal. The men and women who are seeing you, who are seeing us are equal. They're true brothers.

KOPPEL: Well, maybe the photographer; not the cameraman.

No, no, I'm just teasing. He's an old friend.

Sen. Schumer Calls For Alberto Gonzales To Resign »
Today on CBS’s Face the Nation, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to resign. Schumer said Gonzales has “been even more political than his predecessor, Attorney General Ashcroft,” and that Gonzales “either doesn’t accept or doesn’t understand that he is no longer just the president’s lawyer, but has a higher obligation to the rule of law and the Constitution, even when the president should not want it to be so.”

“For the sake of the nation,” Schumer said, “Attorney General Gonzales should step down.” Watch it:

Bush seeks 8,200 more troops for wars By DEB RIECHMANN, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 30 minutes ago

President Bush asked Congress on Saturday for $3.2 billion to pay for 8,200 more U.S. troops needed in Afghanistan and Iraq on top of the 21,500-troop buildup he announced in January.

Bush wants Congress to fund 3,500 new U.S. troops to expand training of local police and army units in Afghanistan. The money also would pay for the estimated 3,500 existing U.S. troops he already announced would be staying longer in the region to counter an anticipated Taliban offensive in Afghanistan this spring.

In Iraq, most of the additional troops would help with the latest Baghdad security plan, which is getting under way in the capital. The money would pay for 2,400 combat support troops, 2,200 military police forces and 129 troops for reconstruction teams.

The budget revisions come as many lawmakers opposed to the buildup in Iraq are debating funding for the war. But in a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record), Bush proposed canceling $3.2 billion in low-priority defense items to offset the extra money needed to support the additional troops.

Cutting the programs, he said, would eliminate the need to increase the overall $93.4 billion in additional defense money he's already requested to finance this year's war operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"This revised request would better align resources based on the assessment of military commanders to achieve the goal of establishing Iraq and Afghanistan as democratic and secure nations that are free of terrorism," Bush wrote in his letter to lawmakers.

Bush signed the letter on his flight Friday from Brazil to Uruguay, part of his five-nation tour of Latin America that continues on Sunday in Colombia. The White House released the letter Saturday in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, recently hinted of the need to bolster the U.S. troop presence in Iraq.

"Gen. Petraeus expects under the Baghdad security plan as well as other parts of Iraq, that the number of people going into detention will increase and so these military police forces will be for that," said Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for the National Security Council.

AP: Bush Administration "Unraveling" In Eyes Of The Public
Associated Press | March 9, 2007 11:51 PM

It is too soon to tell whether Gonzales, a close Texas friend of Bush, might be forced to leave. Even his ouster, however, would do little to change a perception that the Bush administration is unraveling amid declining public support and trust. Some big names already have had to leave.

Donald H. Rumsfeld was forced to resign after Democrats seized control of Congress in fall elections that were a repudiation of Bush's policies on Iraq.

Paul Krugman drops a bombshell.

exerpt:

"For now, the nation’s focus is on the eight federal prosecutors fired by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. In January, Mr. Gonzales told the Senate Judiciary Committee, under oath, that he “would never, ever make a change in a United States attorney for political reasons.” But it’s already clear that he did indeed dismiss all eight prosecutors for political reasons — some because they wouldn’t use their offices to provide electoral help to the G.O.P., and the others probably because they refused to soft-pedal investigations of corrupt Republicans.

In the last few days we’ve also learned that Republican members of Congress called prosecutors to pressure them on politically charged cases, even though doing so seems unethical and possibly illegal.

The bigger scandal, however, almost surely involves prosecutors still in office. The Gonzales Eight were fired because they wouldn’t go along with the Bush administration’s politicization of justice. But statistical evidence suggests that many other prosecutors decided to protect their jobs or further their careers by doing what the administration wanted them to do: harass Democrats while turning a blind eye to Republican malfeasance."

Unknown said...

hee!

Ruzz is taking an nap next to me and snoring...

Unknown said...

More quotes from Krugman:

"Before the midterm election, I wrote that what the election was really about could be summed up in two words: subpoena power. Well, the Democrats now have that power, and the hearings on the prosecutor purge look like the shape of things to come.

In the months ahead, we’ll hear a lot about what’s really been going on these past six years. And I predict that we’ll learn about abuses of power that would have made Richard Nixon green with envy."

a friend who shall remain nameless tells this story:

"I was in Walmart buying a large bag of Purina for our dog Snickers, and was in the check out line. A woman behind me asked if I had a dog...

Duh!

I was feeling a bit crabby so on impulse, I told her no, I was
starting The Purina Diet again, although I probably shouldn't because I'd ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care unit with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IV's in both arms.

Her eyes about bugged out of her head.

I went on and on with the bogus diet story and she was totally buying it. I told her that it was an easy, inexpensive diet and that the way it works is to load your pockets or purse with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The package said the food is nutritionally complete so I was going to try it again.

I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was by now enthralled with my story, particularly a tall guy behind her.

Horrified, she asked if something in the dog food had poisoned me and was that why I ended up in the hospital.

I said no.....I'd been sitting in the street licking my butt when a car hit me.

I thought the tall guy was going to have to be carried out the door."
