"Connected Activism: Revised Social Action or New Paradigm?"

In this piece, Allison Fine, author of "Momentum: Igniting Social Change in the Connected Age" and Senior Fellow at Demos: A Network of Ideas and Action, considers the use of new technologies for social activism.

She poses two key questions, reflecting on whether increased technological connectedness will lead to increased involvement in social change efforts.

‘Scathing’ report says FBI violated guidelines. “The FBI repeatedly failed to follow the strict guidelines of the Patriot Act when its agents took advantage of a new provision allowing the FBI to obtain phone and financial records without a court order, according to a report to be made public Friday by the Justice Department’s Inspector General. The report, in classified and unclassified versions, remains closely held, but Washington officials who have seen it tell ABC News it documents ‘numerous lapses’ and describe it as ’scathing’ and ‘not a pretty picture for the FBI.’”

Rep. Jones (R-NC) backs House Iraq timeline. Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) “signaled Thursday he supported the plan proposed by Democratic leaders today to lay out a specific timeline to withdraw U.S. troops. ‘Conceptually I like what’s been proposed…I think this is on the right track,’ he said. Jones praised the benchmarks in the plan and the inclusion of a date certain for beginning a withdrawal of US troops.”

UPDATE: A new poll shows that a “majority of Americans in competitive, conservative-leaning House districts approve of setting a date for troops to withdraw from Iraq.”

Pelosi says 'So what?' to Bush veto threat on Iraq funding Michael Roston
Published: Thursday March 8, 2007

After a White House official issued a strongly-worded veto threat against the Iraq War funding proposal rolled out by Democratic leaders this morning, the office of Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Congressional Members should not be particularly concerned with what bills President George W. Bush will and won't sign.

"I say to my colleagues never confine your best work, your hopes, your dreams, the aspiration of the American people to what will be signed by George W. Bush because that is too limiting a factor," the Speaker said this morning in a press conference.

Pelosi's office pointed back to the remark, which was made hypothetically this morning, when RAW STORY inquired about her reaction to the actual veto threat issued this afternoon. She had also said that the deal was just a first step, and that it still must be passed out of Appropriations Committee and approved on both the House and Senate floors before being sent to the President's desk.

White House Counselor Dan Bartlett, while en route to Brazil with the President, dismissed the ballyhooed deal that the the Speaker unveiled today along with Reps. David Obey (D-WI), Ike Skelton (D-MO), and John Murtha (D-PA).

"Obviously, the administration would vehemently oppose and ultimately veto any legislation that looks like what was described today," he told reporters aboard Air Force One.

Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA), who sits on the Appropriations Committee, reacted more directly to the President's veto threat.

"The President should dust off his pen because the Supplemental is coming and we’re going to use it to hold the Iraqi government accountable," Moran told RAW STORY. "If they can’t meet the benchmarks in the bill by July, our troops will come home."

The president has only vetoed one bill in the course of his presidency, now in its seventh year. In July 2006, he rejected the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005.

Double-Digit Violent Crime Rise Across US
The New York Times | KATE ZERNIKE | March 8, 2007 10:16 PM

Violent crime rose by double-digit percentages in cities across the country over the last two years, reversing the declines of the mid-to-late 1990s, according to a new report by a prominent national law enforcement association.

While overall crime has been declining nationwide, police officials have been warning of a rise in murder, robbery and gun assaults since late 2005, particularly in midsize cities and the Midwest. Now, they say, two years of data indicates that the spike is more than an aberration.

“Those who, by the essence of their belief, are committed to Direct Action only are —just who? Why, the non-resistants; precisely those who do not believe in violence at all! Now do not make the mistake of inferring that I say direct action means non-resistance; not by any means. Direct action may be the extreme of violence, or it may be as peaceful as the waters of the Brook of Shiloa that go softly. What I say is, that the real non-resistants can believe in direct action only, never in political action. For the basis of all political action is coercion; even when the State does good things, it finally rests on a club, a gun, or a prison, for its power to carry them through.”

Humor is one of the ways I cope, too. I don't have a lot of hope, but I gotta try, ya know?

As for the meta diary at kos, I (kinda) understood the point he made about the rec button, and I wouldn't mind seeing a few changes to the site in general. I thought the rest of the diary was well written, but pointless.

Kos' effectiveness lies in it's size. It functions as a very large soap box, as well as an organizing tool. Do we lose some functionality as a result? Sure. Do some diaries and issues get overlooked? Absolutely. Do I mind? No.

From the BBC:

"Techniques developed by atomic physicists are being used to develop the first of what promises to be a new generation of cancer treatments in place of conventional radiotherapy. One day doctors could even be using anti-matter.

Recent announcements from the CERN laboratory in Geneva have aroused considerable interest in some medical circles.

Cancer cells were successfully targeted with anti-matter subatomic particles, causing intense biological damage leading to cell death.

These pilot experiments may have future potential. But applications borrowed from particle physics are already being used in cancer treatment to help avoid the major side effects of radiotherapy."

*snip*

"In Japan, doctors have already been using particle beams (of carbon ions) for cancers of the eye, lung, prostate and liver.

They report needing only one to four carbon ion treatments compared to six to seven weeks with X-rays."

A History of America's Disappearing Middle Class

By Paul Krugman, AlterNet. Posted March 9, 2007.

The following is excerpted from the keynote speech delivered by Paul Krugman at the Economic Policy Institute's recent conference on The Agenda for Shared Prosperity.

...One thing I've been noticing on multiple debates in public policies -- climate change is another one -- is there seems to be an almost seamless transition from denial to fatalism. That for 15 or 20 years the people would say, "No, what you're saying is not happening." And then almost immediately they'll turn around and say, "Well, yeah, sure it's happening, but there's nothing that can be done about it."

And that's kind of the way a lot of the discussion now goes on inequality. That there is really nothing you can do to arrest this. That it's all the invisible hand driving this growth in inequality, and there's nothing you can do to really change it -- well, maybe better education. But while education is very much a good thing, it's the all-American way of dodging problems. Since everybody approves of it, you say we should have better education but wave away the pretty strong evidence that while it's a good thing, it won't make very much difference. So there's this general sense that you can't do anything.

And I don't think that that's what the historical record suggests. That in fact when we look at it, there appears to be quite a lot that the political process can do about inequality. Just to say, there's the obvious. Obviously, even if you look at the United States right now, the tax and social insurance system makes an enormous difference.

But the amount of inequality in the United States is substantially less than it would be if we did not have still at least somewhat progressive taxation, and still a pretty extensive, though not nearly extensive enough, system of social insurance. And that makes a big difference. Certainly if you're looking at say the United States versus Canada, a lot of the difference between the two countries is just that Canada has more of a better safety net financed by somewhat higher taxation.

Union Sq. stabbing

Teenage violence, attributed to gang activity at Washington Irving High School, broke out at Union Square on Monday morning March 5 when four suspects attacked a 16-year-old victim and stabbed him several times.

The victim, Mark Tyrell, an East Village resident, had transferred out of Washington Irving in January and was enrolled at Chelsea Campus High School on Sixth Ave. at Broome St., according to news reports.

Tyrell transferred to get away from gang activity associated with Washington Irving, according to Deputy Inspector Dennis De Quatro, Ninth Precinct commander.

A 13-year-old student, a truant from Abraham Lincoln Junior High School in Brooklyn, was arrested and charged as a juvenile as the stabber.

Police withheld his name because of his age, but a Daily News article identified him as Brian Hodgson. Three accomplices are being sought.

The incident began at about 8:45 a.m. when Tyrell came out of the subway at 14th St., and exchanged words with four youths who pursued him, punched and kicked him, pushed him into the doors of a pizzeria at 104 E. 14th St. and left him there. One of them returned and stabbed him in the chest, shoulder and back with what could have been a screwdriver or an ice pick based on the wounds, police said.

Tyrell was taken to Bellevue Hospital with four stab wounds. His injuries were not life threatening.

De Quatro said the incident apparently developed from a dispute that started the previous week. It was not related to the riot of teenagers last December that left a 17-year-old student dead in the Union Square Greenmarket, De Quatro said.

On Dec. 7 last year, about 50 teenage boys rampaged through the Greenmarket, leaving Taishawn Bellevue, 17, dead and two others injured, one with a stab would and the other hit on the head with an unknown blunt instrument.

Priests to Purify Site After Bush Visit

Mayan priests will purify a sacred archaeological site to eliminate "bad spirits" after President Bush visits next week, an official with close ties to the group said Thursday.

"That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked, is going to walk in our sacred lands, is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture," Juan Tiney, the director of a Mayan nongovernmental organization with close ties to Mayan religious and political leaders, said Thursday.
...
Tiney said the "spirit guides of the Mayan community" decided it would be necessary to cleanse the sacred site of "bad spirits" after Bush's visit so that their ancestors could rest in peace. He also said the rites _ which entail chanting and burning incense, herbs and candles _ would prepare the site for the third summit of Latin American Indians March 26-30.

Bush's trip has already has sparked protests elsewhere in Latin America, including protests and clashes with police in Brazil hours before his arrival. In Bogota, Colombia, which Bush will visit on Sunday, 200 masked students battled 300 riot police with rocks and small homemade explosives.

Meanwhile Washington may be seeking to destabilise Iran from within. The ethnic mix in Iran is complex; much of the population isn't Persian. There are secessionist tendencies and it is likely that Washington is trying to stir them up - in Khuzestan on the Gulf, for example, where Iran's oil is concentrated, a region that is largely Arab, not Persian.

Threat escalation also serves to pressure others to join US efforts to strangle Iran economically, with predictable success in Europe. Another predictable consequence, presumably intended, is to induce the Iranian leadership to be as repressive as possible, fomenting disorder while undermining reformers.

It is also necessary to demonise the leadership. In the west, any wild statement by President Ahmadinejad is circulated in headlines, dubiously translated. But Ahmadinejad has no control over foreign policy, which is in the hands of his superior, the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The US media tend to ignore Khamenei's statements, especially if they are conciliatory.

Oh then I've heard of him from Miss anne's blog...Gregory Colbert...I think he's the person who started the group that makes it so when a large company wants to put wild animals in their commercials that they have to give money to an animal organization...

Hav you seen the show live? Or watched the video of his work? It's so beautiful...breathtaking...

Hey Sam, John streaming in Philly.
Show Biz Question
Jay Leno....He opens each show with these flashy camera angles of him shaking the hands of the proletariat.
It's been bugging me for years, that he appears to be rubbing his hands as he delivers the monologue. I'm convinced that he is rubbing in hand sanitizer to kill all of those nasty audience germs. He puts his hands in his pockets, rubs his hands together.
Did you ever notice this? Has he ever been exposed? You have the inside show-biz connection Sam. This is a very casual Friday question. So how is the Sanitizer delivered? With all of those camera angles it's tough to disect. Does a stage hand slip him a gob? or are his pockets lined with sanitizer?

Bob Geiger: Washington Senator dares to speak the truth

Murray made the speech on the Senate floor earlier this week when she addressed the subject of funding for mental-health care for troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and the extent to which the White House and Republican party all sport "support the troops" ribbons on their SUVs but have done nothing but lie them into war and hang them out to dry if they make it home.

Indeed, as Murray points out, the Bush administration has seen many reports over the years highlighting bad conditions in Veterans' medical care facilities and have shown that their pro-troop rhetoric doesn't extend to actually doing anything to help them.

"With minimal amounts of sleep, our service men and women work longer days than you and I can imagine. They see things none of us should ever witness: bodies blown to pieces, mutilation, the blood of their fellow soldiers on the streets of a country we have no place being," said Murray on Tuesday. "All of this is for a war we were misled into supporting. There were no weapons of mass destruction, Saddam Hussein was never connected to al Qaeda, and nobody can say we are spreading democracy to Iraq today."

"In truth, we are fighting a war with no cause."

ABC News: FBI broke the law in spying on Americans

Republicans simply do not believe in democracy. Republicans send our troops to die in a war fighting for values Republicans don't even believe in. They hate our system of government, they hate our laws, they hate the independent judiciary. So it's no surprise that they would systematically break the law, again, while spying on innocent Americans just like any other police state would.

From ABC: The FBI repeatedly failed to follow the strict guidelines of the Patriot Act when its agents took advantage of a new provision allowing the FBI to obtain phone and financial records without a court order, according to a report to be made public Friday by the Justice Department's Inspector General.

Can you explain? $8.4 billion/month for 140,000 troops makes $60,000 a month each. The soldier gets what? 2 grand. Where's the rest going? It's like when Bush announced "$550 Billion in tax cuts to create more than a million new jobs" --------- That's $550,000 per job and nobody in the so-called news says shit about it.

thats a good starting point but i think it gets skewed by the neocon principle that government needs to fail. just consider how much damage the bushies have done in the past six years. fema - gone, surplus - gone, bipartisanship - gone, 3 branches of government - gone, and the list goes on and on.

i think we want leaders who can lead and restore confidence and credibility. it will take years to get the governmet back on a sound footing. i'm not sure the dems have the political capital to pull it off, especially with the neocons nipping at their heels and blocking and dodging at every turn.
