Bush to send up to 7000 more troops to Iraq
by Chris in Paris · 3/07/2007 05:21:00 AM ET

It is all going so well or "encouraging" as Dear Leader said yesterday.

In testimony to the House of Representatives Budget Committee, Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England said U.S. military commanders in Iraq were requesting varying numbers of support troops to augment the additional 21,500 soldiers Bush has ordered into combat.

"At this point, our expectation is the number of ... troops could go above 21,500 by about 4,000, maybe as many as 7,000," England said.
So now the escalation is escalating.

John Edwards to boycott FOX News presidential primary debate in Nevada
by John Aravosis (DC) · 3/06/2007 11:11:00 PM ET

John Edwards is gaining some street cred, and fast. More from Markos.

Quick Background: FOX News, the GOP propaganda organ, is hosting the first debate for the Democratic presidential primary. Why would anyone pick a station made up of far-right bigots who hate everything this country stands for to host the first Democratic debate? Good question. And Markos is asking it.

Senate panel to examine credit card fees By MARCY GORDON, AP Business Writer
Wed Mar 7, 3:19 AM ET

A Senate panel is examining complex billing and interest-rate practices for credit cards that critics say confuse consumers and can push them deeper into debt.

Sen. Carl Levin (news, bio, voting record), D-Mich., chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs subcommittee, said an investigation by his panel found "abusive" and confusing practices by credit card companies that can increase financial pain for many families.

"The penalties are repeated and they keep you in debt," Levin told reporters in advance of a hearing Wednesday at which major credit card issuers were expected to testify.

While the credit card practices in question are legal, Levin is threatening possible legislation to outlaw them as a spur to the banking industry for voluntary changes.

Scrutiny from Congress in recent months of the credit card industry already has caused several major banks to begin to eliminate or temper some of those practices, said Levin, who was joined at a briefing by Sen. Norm Coleman (news, bio, voting record) of Minnesota, the panel's senior Republican.

Stricter rules for banks laid down by regulators such as the Federal Reserve also may be needed, the two senators said.

my favorite practice is the one where one company can increase your interest rate if you make a late payment to another company under the theory that any late payments make you a better mark, i mean credit risk.

anybody remember when states actually had laws on the books that restricted maximum interest rates to something that was reasonable?

Today my family formally purchases and takes over Air America Radio. Why? Because if progressive values were a stock, now is the time to buy.

Better content, better programming, and a better country

Air America was a large, smart idea to counter the near-monopoly on talk radio by the far right. But like most start-ups, the business plan collided with reality. Six CEOs over its first three years -- and various missteps and misspending -- sent it into Chapter 11.

It's now ready to go from The Perils of Pauline to The Little Engine that Could. How? First, by focusing on the radio fundamentals of making a strong line-up even stronger; second, by connecting to other progressive membership organizations to be mutually fortifying; and third, by being a multi-media content company involving other distribution platforms -- Internet, blogging, audio and video streaming, mobile, social networks, and more. It's time to think outside the (radio) box.

The twin goals are to make it profitable and influential. One without the other won't work. If it's not a business, it'll go out of business.

We have many fresh ideas for programming, for technology, for partnerships with sister organizations. But it's this conversation called democracy that's the cornerstone of Air America 2.0. We intend to listen to our listeners. To increase our listeners. To hope they will join our journey to better content, better programming, and a better country. To tell them that it's your America, and your Air America.

In case Mr Green or someone else from AAR is looking in, may I make a few suggestions?

1- How about a weekend show with Amy Goodman, either a 1 hour in-depth interview show or a compendium of the week's events from DN coverage?

2- I think Phil Donohue could do wonderful things with a weekend show or a daily commentary.

3- If she would be amenable to it, Laura Flanders needs to be on daily in some form, either a daily commentary or a news wrap-up with commentary. Don't take away her weekend show- it's too good to lose- she just needs a better slot.

4- How about some kind of tie-in with the soon to launch IWT Real News project? It could make AAR's news coverage stand out and provide some very good material.

5- Mike Malloy needs to get back in the game on AAR. Maybe as a syndication offering or just a daily feature. However it can happen, his voice should be on your air.

6- AAR needs at least one show that has someone based in D.C. to keep a close eye on things inside the beltway. Who that should be, I don't know, but it needs to happen.
7- Laurie David, a frequent guest on many shows, has the ability to do well on an environmental/green show. She also has a good voice/presence on radio. Someone needs to sign her to host or contribute features/segments/whatever.

8- Overhaul the website for the network and get your affiliates to do the same. The audience you are targeting is very web savvy and needs a first-rate site to help extend the brand, coverage and give a good outlet on both sides of the mike.

9. Fix this blog!

Thanks for making the investment. With patience, solid investment and ingenuity, AAR can grow and fulfill it's promise.

Christian Chavez, 23, belongs to RBD, a band that emerged from popular TV soap Rebelde (Rebel).

He said he did not "want to keep on lying" about his life, after pictures emerged of him with a man apparently getting married in Canada.

The announcement had taken "a lot of bravery", one Mexican columnist wrote.

Election could give Beverly Hills its first Iranian-born mayor

By Peter Prengaman, AP writer
BEVERLY HILLS — A city councilman was close to becoming the first Iranian-born mayor of this tony Los Angeles suburb, a sign of the growing clout of Persian immigrants here.
In elections Tuesday for the City Council, Jimmy Delshad was in second place, trailing planning commissioner Nancy Krasne. The top two finishers will get seats on the City Council and Delshad's seniority would make him mayor.

While 100% of precincts were reporting early Wednesday, a total of 892 provisional and other outstanding ballots remained to be verified and counted.

Krasne was leading with 24% of the votes, or 2,486 votes, according to unofficial results posted on the city's website. Delshad garnered 22% of the votes, with 2,192 ballots cast in his favor, compared to 21%, or 2,185 votes, for current Mayor Steve Webb.

Delshad, 66, was one of three candidates of Iranian descent running for two open council seats. In all, six candidates are running for the two positions.

In Beverly Hills, re-election to the council would give Delshad the seniority to be named mayor. The mayor is the presiding officer of the council; a hired city manager is the city's executive officer.

The chance to become one of the highest ranking Iranian-American officials in the United States is not lost on Delshad.

Veterans advocate: Bush's VA Secretary is the next 'Mike Brown' David Edwards
Published: Wednesday March 7, 2007

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough asks Paul Rieckhoff, president of the organization Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), to respond to failures in the veteran care system at Walter Reed and other VA's across the country.

Rieckhoff says, "The bottom line is that we failed our veterans. We failed as Americans. As a Congress. The President failed -- to provide them with the the basic tenet of honoring their sacrifice and making sure we hold up our end of the bargain. And we're going to be paying for that for decades."

Mr. Rieckhoff in particular singles out Veterans Administration Secretary Jim Mickleson, a Bush appointee. "He's at fault here too. He's kind of like the 'Mike Brown' of FEMA that America doesn't know about yet."

The following video is from the Tuesday broadcast of MSNBC's 'Scarborough Country.'

Coping with daylight-saving time

Q. I’ve heard that there is going to be a big problem when we switch to daylight-saving time this year. Since it is happening earlier, computers aren’t going to be able to handle the change. Will this affect computers everywhere? And what about our home computers? I’m worried.

*

This is a bit reminiscent of the Y2K crisis. But don’t start hoarding water and canned goods! Most people have nothing to worry about.

This year, daylight-saving time will begin three weeks earlier on March 11. It will also end a week later. This is enough to confuse most people.

But it has the potential to create troubles with your computer. Computers automatically adjust their clock to daylight-saving time. However, the date that daylight-saving time kicks in is programmed into the software.

Daylight-saving time was changed due to the 2005 Energy Policy Act. So your computer could have the incorrect date to switch.

This is inconvenient. But you could probably work around it. However, Microsoft has already pushed out a patch for Windows XP. So if you have XP, and it’s updated, you’re OK. If you haven’t updated XP lately, now is a good time.

...

Now, there are a couple of things you should consider. For three weeks after March 11, you’ll want to be careful when making appointments via Outlook. Even though your calendar is correct, the other party’s might not be. Call to confirm if in doubt.

Other gadgets around the house may also have problems. You’re probably used to changing the dates manually. But if they update automatically for daylight-saving time, contact the manufacturer. There may be patches to fix them.

You should also pay attention to the calendar on your phone, handheld or smartphone. These will likely need patches. Check your manufacturer’s support site.

Ark. gov. 'frustrated' with tornado response

LITTLE ROCK (AP) — Gov. Mike Beebe said Monday he was frustrated with the federal government for not declaring a disaster in tornado-struck southern Arkansas.
Beebe told reporters he did not understand why a federal declaration had not been made for Dumas, where a tornado wiped out dozens of homes and businesses last month.

We're frustrated, yes," Beebe said, when asked about comments made by U.S. Rep. Mike Ross, D-Ark., who was critical of the federal response.

"We're frustrated with the federal government not authorizing federal disaster assistance on the federal level for Dumas. We don't understand yet why."

Over the weekend, Ross criticized President Bush and the Federal Emergency Management Agency for what he called a slow response to the Arkansas tornadoes.

Beebe last week asked Bush for $1.5 million in emergency federal funding to help victims of the storm in Desha County. The funds would provide temporary housing, small business disaster loans and direct assistance to those affected by tornadoes. No fatalities were reported. Dozens of people were injured, and homes and businesses were destroyed in the Feb. 24 storms.

Also, Beebe and Ross have asked the White House to send Desha County some of the 8,000 trailers being stored at the Hope Municipal Airport by FEMA. The trailers were originally bought to shelter survivors of Hurricane Katrina.

Vermont Votes To Impeach Bush, Cheney
The Nation | John Nichols | March 7, 2007 09:37 AM

When Vermont Governor Jim Douglas, a Republican with reasonably close ties to President Bush, asked if there was any additional business to be considered at the town meeting he was running in Middlebury, Ellen McKay popped up and proposed the impeachment of Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

The governor was not amused. As moderator of the annual meeting, he tried to suggest that the proposal to impeach -- along with another proposal to withdraw U.S. troops from
Iraq -- could not be voted on.

As if there weren't enough intriguing aspects to the US Attorneys case already, Greg Palast dropped this bombshell in my mail today:

Timothy Griffin, Karl Rove’s assistant, the President’s pick as US Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas. Griffin, according to BBC Television, was the hidden hand behind a scheme to wipe out the voting rights of 70,000 citizens prior to the 2004 election.

Key voters on Griffin’s hit list: Black soldiers and homeless men and women. Nice guy, eh? Naughty or nice, however, is not the issue. Targeting voters where race is a factor is a felony crime under the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Conservative bloggers send letter to CPAC/ACU: The Age of Ann is Over

Conservatism treats humans as they are, as moral creatures possessing rational minds and capable of discerning right from wrong. There comes a time when we must speak out in the defense of the conservative movement, and make a stand for political civility. This is one of those times.

Ann Coulter used to serve the movement well. She was telegenic, intelligent, and witty. She was also fearless: saying provocative things to inspire deeper thought and cutting through the haze of competing information has its uses. But Coulter's fearlessness has become an addiction to shock value. She draws attention to herself, rather than placing the spotlight on conservative ideas.

At the Conservative Political Action Conference in 2006, Coulter referred to Iranians as "ragheads." She is one of the most prominent women in the conservative movement; for her to employ such reckless language reinforces the stereotype that conservatives are racists.

At CPAC 2007 Coulter decided to turn up the volume by referring to John Edwards, a former U.S. Senator and current Presidential candidate, as a "faggot." Such offensive language--and the cavalier attitude that lies behind it--is intolerable to us. It may be tolerated on liberal websites but not at the nation's premier conservative gathering....

Coulter's vicious word choice tells the world she care little about the feelings of a large group that often feels marginalized and despised. Her word choice forces conservatives to waste time defending themselves against charges of homophobia rather than advancing conservative ideas....

Sent to Majority Leader and my representative Steny Hoyer:

As your constituent, I would like to urge you to pursue an investigation of potential criminal charges against Vice President Cheney, and to use your leadership role to gain the support of other congressional reps, if not bi-partisan, at least those within the Democratic party. I reference such a call for this investigation made by Rep. Hinchey in a press release dated March 6, 2007 in which he alleges recently-convicted I. Libby's actions (his lies) were to deflect from the administration's role "to undermine and weaken the credibility of her (Plame) husband, Ambassador Joe Wilson..." However, I believe the motivation and impetus was far more sinister, and treasonous, that is to shut down Plame's clandestine operation thru Brewster-Jennings which was to detect and monitor nuclear proliferation, particularly in Iran, which could further challenge their accusations toward Iran and impede their plans for the Middle East.

Quite frankly, I am wondering why you, Majority Leader, or Speaker Peloski didn't beat Rep. Hinchey to the press podium, but I urge you to step up now.

I expect to see your response on the news. Thank you.

Greenspan Sees One-Third Chance of Recession in 2007 (Update2)

By Craig Torres

March 6 (Bloomberg) -- Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said there's a ``one-third probability'' of a U.S. recession this year and the current expansion won't have the staying power of its decade-long predecessor.

``We are in the sixth year of a recovery; imbalances can emerge as a result,'' Greenspan, 81, said in an interview yesterday at his office in downtown Washington. ``Ten-year recoveries have been part of a much broader global phenomenon. The historically normal business cycle is much shorter'' and is likely to be this time, he added.

Greenspan's outlook contrasts with the prediction of his successor Ben S. Bernanke, who told Congress last week that the economy may strengthen this year. Bernanke's upbeat assessment helped steady stock markets on Feb. 28 after a plunge the day before that some traders attribute partly to Greenspan's musing that a recession couldn't be ruled out.

Financial markets took the comments in stride today. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 1 percent at 12:30 p.m. New York time, following stock-market gains in Asia and Europe. Ten- year U.S. Treasury notes fell 5/32, lifting yields 2 basis points to 4.51 percent. A basis point is 0.01 percentage point.

``It is possible that we can have a recession at the end of this year,'' said Greenspan, who ran the central bank for 18 years until January 2006. Bernanke, 53, declined to comment.

Paulson Says Global Growth Solid and Inflation Low (Update6)

By Kevin Carmichael

March 7 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said global economic growth is ``solid'' and played down investor concern that wiped out $3.3 trillion of world stock-market value in six days.

There is also ``low inflation and high levels of liquidity,'' Paulson said to reporters after meeting South Korea's Finance Minister Kwon Okyu in Seoul today. ``I feel very good about the global economy and the fundamentals.''

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke last week said markets were ``working well'' and the Fed's economic outlook wasn't shaken by the turmoil. The Morgan Stanley Capital International World Index has risen 1.6 percent in the past two days following a 6.1 percent slump in the previous five sessions sparked by a plunge in Chinese stocks.

``Policy makers have been trying to reassure investors, and a qualification for the job as Treasury secretary is to sound upbeat on the economy,'' said Shane Oliver, Sydney-based chief economist at AMP Capital Investors, which has about $64 billion under management.

Reserve Bank of Australia Assistant Governor Malcolm Edey said today the world economy is likely to keep expanding. ``The prospects for global growth in the short term seem to be good,'' he said in Sydney.

Former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan, by contrast, said in a March 5 interview that there is a ``one-third probability'' of a U.S. recession this year.

Section 2 of the 25th Amendment provides that "Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress." Gerald Ford was the first Vice President selected by this method, after the resignation of Vice President Spiro Agnew in 1973; after succeeding to the Presidency, Ford nominated Nelson Rockefeller as vice president.

Sections 3 and 4 of the amendment provide means for the vice president to become Acting President upon the temporary disability of the president. Section 3 deals with self declared incapacity of the president, and section 4 deals with incapacity declared by the joint action of the Vice President and of a majority of the Cabinet. While section 4 has never been invoked, section 3 has been invoked twice: on July 13, 1985 when Ronald Reagan underwent surgery to remove cancerous polyps from his colon, and again on June 29, 2002 when George W. Bush underwent a colonoscopy procedure requiring sedation. Prior to this amendment, Vice President Richard Nixon informally replaced President Dwight Eisenhower for a period of weeks on each of three occasions when Eisenhower was ill.

Will Iraq Become the Democrats' War?

The shortest route to ending the Iraq war (and preventing additional wars) is almost certainly through Congress. Influencing the White House directly is unimaginable, and stopping the war through the courts unlikely. Clearly, Congress is the way to go. But what specifically can Congress do?

...

Every day that the Democrats don't move to end the war in Iraq is another day in which that war, stretching ever on, can become the Democrats' war. Only if they come to believe that the war's unpopularity will work against them in the voting booths in 2008 or thereafter will they be strongly motivated to take the sorts of actions that might actually bring it to an end.

Re the US Attorney Massacre - I think its clear whats going on. This is how you use the Executive Branch to attempt a take over of the political system after losing to the opposing party in mid-term elections. I think the strategy appears to be:
1. Replace aggressive US Attorneys who have questioned or prosecuted administration officials or Republicans with political operatives
2. Replace US attorneys in key areas - also with political operatives

There are good odds that this is being done in order to:
1. Squelch/sabotage any follow on investigations and/or prosecutions from congressional hearings and investigations
2. Agressively investigate and smear Democratic office holders and future candidates
3. Squelch/deny/delay any future election impropriety/fraud cases that may come up in the next election.

To sum it up this is the start of a basic political take-over of the judicial branch of the government.

Keep up the good work!

Chris

Ex-Press Secretary: White House should 'answer questions' now on CIA leak case Mike Sheehan
Published: Wednesday March 7, 2007

Former Press Secretary Scott McClellan says that the White House should be more forthcoming now about the CIA leak case that has resulted in the conviction of former Cheney Chief of Staff Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Editor & Publisher reports.

McClellan, appearing on CNN's 'Larry King Live' Tuesday night, said "I would advise the White House to find a way to get out there and talk about it and answer some of the questions."

The president's former chief spokesperson said it will be "interesting to see" if the Bush administration can "sustain its refusal to say anything through the appeal process," writes E&P.

Libby was declared guilty of most of the counts against him in the CIA leak trial, as RAW STORY reported earlier.

Excerpts from the E&P article, available in full here, are below, followed by portions from CNN's transcript.

Abdullah urges U.S.-led peace process By GEORGE GEDDA, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 45 minutes ago

Citing the risks of further delay, Jordan's King Abdullah II told Congress Wednesday the United States must take the lead in creating conditions for a permanent peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

Speaking to a joint meeting of House and Senate members, Abdullah said that history has shown that progress in Mideast peacemaking is impossible without American leadership.

"We look to you to play a historic role," he said, adding that results are needed "not in one year or five years but this year."

"No more bloodshed, no more lives pointlessly taken," Abdullah declared.

His speech, lasting just under a half hour, was delivered in flawless English, with only an occasional aside in Arabic. He was interrupted a number of times by applause.

The king's remarks were limited almost entirely to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Abdullah made no direct reference to Hamas, the extremist group that controls most of the Palestinian government. He also made no mention of the current divisions in the Palestinian leadership or to recent efforts by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to revive peace efforts.

Instead, he spoke of the suffering that both Israelis and Palestinians have experienced. At one point, Abdullah lamented "the 40 years of occupation" that he said Palestinians have endured.

"The goal must be a peace in which all sides gain," he said. "There must be a peace in which Israelis will be part of the neighborhood."

Senior Bush Official May Have Violated Law Trying To Block Pelosi From Appearing At Event
House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) has uncovered more potentially illegal activity by the head of the General Services Administration, Lorita Doan.

Waxman has discovered that Doan “used a January 2007 teleconference to ask senior GSA officials to help ‘our candidates’ in the next elections through targeted public events, such as the opening of federal facilities around the country.” Doan discussed with GSA officials “how to exclude House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from an upcoming courthouse opening in San Francisco and how to include Republican Senator Mel Martinez.” Doan’s activity is now being investigated as a potential violation of the Hatch Act, which prohibits partisan campaign activities on federal property.

Doan’s inappropriate (and potentially illegal) behavior extends beyond partisan hackery. Last summer, Doan signed a $20,000 no-bid contract for a 24-page report “promoting GSA’s use of minority- and women-owned businesses.”

Doan made the deal with a firm called Diversity Best Practices, headed by Edie Fraser. Waxman has discovered that Doan “had a long-standing business relationship with Ms. Fraser that has not been disclosed previously. Moreover, “Fraser used her professional connections to advance Doan’s nomination to GSA and to provide personal favors, and…Ms. Fraser continued to provide services with the expectation of payment to Ms. Doan after she became GSA Administrator.”

Waxman released an email from Fraser to Doan on 9/6/06:

It was the bloggers what killed Sam's show.!!!

The network’s now-defunct Majority Report featured Janeane Garafalo and Sam Seder, both staunch liberals who opposed the Iraq War.

As comics, both were adept at putting down their opponents on the right, but had limited experience as political analysts.

In the 2006 Ohio Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, Seder crusaded vigorously for the centrist Iraq War veteran Paul Hackett against the far more progressive U.S. Rep.

Sherrod Brown, who had been calling for withdrawal. At times, when Seder sang the praises of Hackett, he didn’t seem to know that Hackett opposed withdrawal.

Seder seemed to be taking his cues from liberal bloggers who strongly supported Hackett and were a regular feature on the show. Seder’s and Majority Report’s preference for bloggers, who were often newcomers to politics, over experienced progressive experts and activists detracted from the show’s seriousness and impact

Washington Republicans Chased Ousted Prosecutor
By Paul Kiel - March 7, 2007, 1:40 PM
When former United States attorney John McKay made a bid in 2005 to be a federal judge, he didn't get the job. Why? Well, part of the vetting process, it seems, involved quizzing him about why he didn't pursue allegations of voter fraud by Democrats in the 2004 gubernatorial election.

The Seattle Times has more on who in the White House asked McKay about that:

He said Tuesday that during interviews with Harriet Miers, former White House counsel, and William Kelley, deputy counsel, he was asked to explain "criticism that I mishandled the 2004 governor's election."
Since McClatchy reported that Miers wasn't the one who popped the question to McKay, it seems that William Kelley was.

So who complained to the White House?

McKay told The Seattle Times that reporters "should ask Congressman [Doc] Hastings (R-WA) if he contacted the White House in connection with my application to be district judge or contacted the justice department."

Well, they did, and Hastings' chief of staff denied it up and down: "Neither I nor any member of my staff — past or present — ever contacted anyone at the White House or the Department of Justice about whether John McKay should be removed as U.S. attorney or whether he was qualified to be a federal judge."

What Did Israel Know in Advance of the 9/11 Attacks?
By CHRISTOPHER KETCHAM

On the afternoon of September 11, 2001, an FBI bulletin known as a BOLO - "be on lookout" -- was issued with regard to three suspicious men who that morning were seen leaving the New Jersey waterfront minutes after the first plane hit World Trade Center 1. Law enforcement officers across the New York-New Jersey area were warned in the radio dispatch to watch for a "vehicle possibly related to New York terrorist attack":

White, 2000 Chevrolet van with 'Urban Moving Systems' sign on back seen at Liberty State Park, Jersey City, NJ, at the time of first impact of jetliner into World Trade Center Three individuals with van were seen celebrating after initial impact and subsequent explosion. FBI Newark Field Office requests that, if the van is located, hold for prints and detain individuals.

At 3:56 p.m., twenty-five minutes after the issuance of the FBI BOLO, officers with the East Rutherford Police Department stopped the commercial moving van through a trace on the plates. According to the police report, Officer Scott DeCarlo and Sgt. Dennis Rivelli approached the stopped van, demanding that the driver exit the vehicle. The driver, 23-year-old Sivan Kurzberg, refused and "was asked several more times [but] appeared to be fumbling with a black leather fanny pouch type of bag". With guns drawn, the police then "physically removed" Kurzberg, while four other men - two more men had apparently joined the group since the morning - were also removed from the van, handcuffed, placed on the grass median and read their Miranda rights.

They had not been told the reasons for their arrest. Yet, according to DeCarlo's report, "this officer was told without question by the driver [Sivan Kurzberg],'We are Israeli. We are not your problem.Your problems are our problems. The Palestinians are the problem.'" Another of the five Israelis, again without prompting, told Officer DeCarlo - falsely - that "we were on the West Side Highway in New York City during the incident". From inside the vehicle the officers, who were quickly joined by agents from the FBI, retrieved multiple passports and $4,700 in cash stuffed in a sock. According to New Jersey's Bergen Record, which on September 12 reported the arrest of the five Israelis, an investigator high up in the Bergen County law enforcement hierarchy stated that officers had also discovered in the vehicle "maps of the city with certain places highlighted. It looked like they're hooked in with this", the source told the Record, referring to the 9/11 attacks. "It looked like they knew what was going to happen when they were at Liberty State Park."

Like sales of "FUBAR"...he preachs to his choir and they say "Amen" and pass the plate for the preacher.

He talks over or counter-questions his callers before they can even speak....and if one starts to back him in a corner or refutes him factually....he resorts to name-calling.

And as a witness I can tell you, like Sam, his fans are not keen on "back talk" or "bad talk" about ol' Sammy. Liberal love of free speech and all....believe me they run his blog the way he runs his show.

* Ex-Cheney Chief of Staff Lewis ³Scooter² Libby Convicted of Perjury, Obstruction in CIA Leak Trial *

Vice President Cheney¹s former chief of staff Lewis ³Scooter² Libby is facing up to 25 years in prison following his conviction on Tuesday in the CIA leak case. Jurors found Libby guilty of four felony counts of making false statements to the FBI, lying to a grand jury and obstructing a probe into the leak of Valerie Plame¹s identity. Libby is the highest-ranking White House official to be convicted of a felony since the Iran-Contra scandal nearly two decades ago. We get reaction from investigative journalist Murray Waas and blogger and author Marcy Wheeler.

After the verdict was delivered, only one juror, Denis Collins, a Washington Post reporter in the 1980s, spoke to the press. He noted that jurors more than once asked, Why was Libby here, not Rove, not someone else? "Where are these other guys?" he said. The jurors were convinced, he noted, that Libby was guilty as charged (on four of the counts). But the jurors also believed he had been ordered by Cheney to talk to reporters as part of the White House's spin operation. In other words, some White House wrongdoers or conspirators (if not conspirators in the strict legal definition of the word) had gotten off. But there was nothing the jurors could do about this, he said: "It was not a question of who we could punish about going to Iraq." What about the prospect of a presidential pardon? one reporter asked Collins. Will you feel cheated if Bush pardons him? No, Collins replied: "He's been pilloried. We found him guilty." (Conservatives have already started a campaign for a Libby pardon.)

Fox News Debate "compromise"
by kos
Wed Mar 07, 2007 at 11:49:19 AM PST
The Nevada Democratic Party has a supposed "compromise" now that it sees the debate falling apart. Air America will supposedly get to co-host the debate.

This would've been acceptable a week ago. Too late now. There's no reason for Fox News to carry any Democratic primary debate, and given the multiple debate opportunities in Nevada this coming year, there's no reason for Fox News to get any of it.

Tom Collins concludes his "compromise" letter with this:

With these changes, we believe we have made a good-faith effort to address the concerns laid out to us and look forward to working with the candidates and our local supporters to ensuring the best debate possible.

Actually, there was no "good faith effort" to address concerns until John Edwards dropped the debate. Before then, there was nothing but arm-twisting efforts to get people to support their asinine decision. Now that the debate is falling apart, they want to compromise.

Too late. The time for compromise is past. At this point, all that's left is killing this Fox News Debate dead.

Update: Okay, there's not much of a "compromise" here. This isn't an offer to allow Air America to "co-host". There is no co-branding.

In effect, what this does is give Air America a token questioner, sitting with three Fox News questioners. Nothing more. It would still be billed as a Fox News debate, legitimizing the network as a neutral news provider.

Stoller at MyDD updates:

Last week, Moveon offered the Nevada Democratic Party a compromise on the debate - the debate would be co-hosted and co-branded by Air America. This would have addressed our concern that Fox News was being validated as a neutral news outlet. In response, the Nevada Democratic Party leadership suggested that inviting one progressive voice onto the panel would be acceptable, with no co-branding involved. This obviously missed the point and would not address the concerns of Democrats who are constantly slimed by a supposedly neutral Fox News.

Blue Dog Democrats take over the HOuse...

"It should be obvious that very little is going to pass in the House that a majority of Blue Dogs do not support," said former Rep. Charles Stenholm, D-Texas, who led the group when he was in Congress and keeps in close contact with House Democrats.

Stenholm opposed Pelosi's 2002 ascension to the ranks of House leadership, believing that she was philosophically too far to the left and dismissive of moderate points of view.

Many Blue Dogs and other moderates are still wary of her, they say privately, concerned that Pelosi's liberal views and tendency to side with her mostly left-of- center confidants could earn their party an extremist image that will cost them their seats _ and Democrats the majority.

But many now also say that Pelosi is bowing to the political realities that landed her in her post.

"The country has moved to the center. Nancy understands that, and she listens to the Blue Dogs, and I take a lot of comfort in that," Stenholm said.

Blue Dogs _ with their right-of-center views, conservative districts and hawkish tendencies _ share a more natural rapport with Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., who they see as their most prominent advocate in leadership.

As the Edwards campaign noted, this Fox News debate isn't the only game in town:

By the end of March, we will have attended three presidential forums in Nevada - and there are already at least three proposed Nevada debates. We're definitely going to debate in Nevada, but we don't see why this needs to be one of them.

Nevada voters won't be deprived an opportunity to see the candidates. The only losers will be Fox News, which won't get the legitimization it desperately craves, and the Nevada Party leaders (Collins and Reid) who are left isolated on the party's fringe trying to defend Fox News.

Edwards saw no need to validate the outlet that provided Ann Coulter sanctuary after her disastrous CPAC appearance. Obama will hopefully continue freezing out the outlet that has spread lies about his church and his education while in Indonesia. And really, given how tight Hillary's schedule must be, does she really want to waste a day on a debate by the network that has made her and her husband's life miserable for years?

This debate isn't dead yet, but we're getting there.

Greg Palast: US Atty Replacement Played Role in Voter Suppression
by beedee
Wed Mar 07, 2007 at 06:20:32 AM PST
Cross-posted @ lethologica

So now we can attach election tampering to this scandal.

The most fascinating aspect of this piece is how it was uncovered:

In October 2004, our investigations team at BBC Newsnight received a series of astonishing emails from Mr. Griffin, then Research Director for the Republican National Committee. He didn’t mean to send them to us. They were highly confidential memos meant only for RNC honchos.

However, Griffin made a wee mistake. Instead of sending the emails — potential evidence of a crime — to email addresses ending with the domain name “@GeorgeWBush.com” he sent them to “@GeorgeWBush.ORG.” A website run by prankster John Wooden who owns “GeorgeWBush.org.” When Wooden got the treasure trove of Rove-ian ravings, he sent them to us.

And we dug in, decoding, and mapping the voters on what Griffin called, “Caging” lists, spreadsheets with 70,000 names of voters marked for challenge. Overwhelmingly, these were Black and Hispanic voters from Democratic precincts.

I was disgusted enough with the prospect of giving one of Rove's former assistants subpoena power, but it looks like he's been involved in another Katherine Harris style voter purge ala Florida 2000:

The Griffin scheme was sickly brilliant. We learned that the RNC sent first-class letters to new voters in minority precincts marked, “Do not forward.” Several sheets contained nothing but soldiers, other sheets, homeless shelters. Targets included the Jacksonville Naval Air Station in Florida and that city’s State Street Rescue Mission. Another target, Edward Waters College, a school for African-Americans.

If these voters were not currently at their home voting address, they were tagged as “suspect” and their registration wiped out or their ballot challenged and not counted. Of course, these ‘cages’ captured thousands of students, the homeless and those in the military though they are legitimate voters.

A theory of change must analyze:

what brings citizens together;

what causes them to see themselves as political actors;

how they select an instrument for change and learn how to use it;

how a change process transforms relationships that block change into relationships that can design and implement change;

and how citizens in dialogue can design a scenario of interactive steps to engage larger numbers of citizens in actions that result in fundamental change.

ya T,

i realized a long time ago that things have cycles.

i just ease through the changes and try to relieve some of the stress on others.

when we talk at each other it's at the ebb.

when we talk to each other we have a high tide that makes movement possible.

You must know that by now everyone read about the Fitzmas bust. We had to come to laugh at you. Oh how wrong you were again!

Now a new owner is shaking thing up at ARR. It is only right we watch your last gasps. Do you think Sam will be allowed to have a "last show" or do you think they will just dump him too?

Radio is such a cruel business.

Not much here to watch die. Blown to the four corners this blog is. Lot's of liberals learned how fucked up they were and how out of step their thinking. It's called a beginners political lesson. Politics 101! They just grew up!

Unknown said...

don't think it's warppuppie or syna.

has a cruel edge to it though and a profound ignorance of what's really important.

a lack of perspective too.

i figger though, that if it comes from an anonacow, it has to stand on it's merits and if there are none it's just regurgitation.

cracks me up when they don't use quotes on the stuff they use...

pretending it's theirs. no acreditation.

and no original thinking.

What are there, 5 libbies left here? The definition of failure! The die hards. The deadenders with no where to go. How sad. Sam did what a good leader should do. He tried to let the crew off on dry land before the ship sinks under the wave. Sad that few are too stupid to get off the ship.

Maybe Sam should have done what Al did....

take the show to some reasonable shot at winning the Dem nomination state/district....use it to start his own PAC....then once he established residency, quit the show and use it to boost his own political career?

Or rush out another "FUBAR" cut & paste book before he gets replaced by Stephanie Miller!

hee hee hee

You know, if they could just come up with a different argument... but it's the same tedious shit day in and day out. AAR hasn't been sold for one day and it's 'buh-bye Sam! buh-bye blog! buh-bye AAR, you're all going down!'

Nothin' but boring bullshit from a bunch a bogus blowhards.

IMHO, of course... ;-p

The liberal spouts foolishness all day long. 9 times out of 10 they are completely off base. Like an ignorant child you must point out their mistakes. Again and again. Fitzmas is the perfect example of such liberal foolishness

--------And you have such stellar examples in your party.

I can get lists if you want. But I don't think you'd want to see those list. It makes your side look really bad. And there are soooo many on that list.

Good positive American shows like Rush Limbaugh prosper. They make a profit as does anyone associated with them. Over time their basic precepts have been found to be correct. Over time they have grown as their ideas have been tested.

Liberal radio, and AAR is the best example, fails at each testing. There is only a tiny group of disgruntled Americans that will support AAR.

But life will go on. Radio will go on. The people will vote with their tuners. And advertisers will vote with their dollars.

It is the American way.

Now that Air America is under new management and no longer owned by Brooklyn Bridge Real Estate, here are some thoughts on how to do it right this time.

First off, hire RADIO people, not actresses or stand-up comedians. Three hours a day is a lot more time to fill than you think.

There are a number of fabulously entertaining broadcasters - folks like Stephanie, Ronn Owens, Phil Hendrie, and Gary Burbank. And our own Elayne Boosler now has enough broadcast experience that she's a future star in the making. But in general.

Remember:

Bakersfield radio is a good training ground, not THE LAUGH FACTORY.
