Tuesday

On his show last Friday, Bill O'Reilly linked a tragic fire that killed 10 people, including nine children, to illegal immigration. That's right: lax enforcement of immigration laws killed members of the Magassa and Soumare family. Watch the clip on Media Matters -- and listen to the voice of reason: Geraldo Rivera. Seriously: Geraldo Rivera.

Author and oil analyst Antonia Juhasz is our guest today in the second hour. Make sure to read her op-ed in the New York Times today, "Whose Oil Is It Anyway?"

In March 2001, the National Energy Policy Development Group (better known as Vice President Dick Cheney’s energy task force), which included executives of America’s largest energy companies, recommended that the United States government support initiatives by Middle Eastern countries “to open up areas of their energy sectors to foreign investment.” One invasion and a great deal of political engineering by the Bush administration later, this is exactly what the proposed Iraq oil law would achieve. It does so to the benefit of the companies, but to the great detriment of Iraq’s economy, democracy and sovereignty.

Does the following blurb read like the White House might be circling its wagons around the president ... and only the president?

The president did not call for the removal of any specific United States attorneys, said Dana Perino, a White House spokeswoman. She said she had “no indication” that the president had been personally aware that a process was already under way to identify prosecutors who would be fired.

But Ms Perino disclosed that White House officials had consulted with the Justice Department in preparing the list of United States attorneys who would be removed.

Within a few weeks of the president’s comments to the attorney general, the Justice Department forced out seven prosecutors.

whats really going on in the equities market? consider the following:

Futures Manipulation 101
March 8, 2007 in Stocks

After last week’s extremely scary and extremely real selloff, big money is trying to distribute shares without causing a panic.

The easiest way to do this is to simply manipulate futures. Since futures contracts are less liquid than stocks, less numerous, and easier to move, the BIG BIG players in the market can move the ENTIRE market for just a few million bucks in risk.

Thursday morning was a perfect example: No real news, but a HUGE gap up in the overall market. Asian stocks finally took a breather from the selloff, so the stage was set:

1. Dump money into buying the main index futures to push them up nicely before the premarket begins.

2. There is no other news to move the market, so premarket opens sharply higher and BECOMES the story.

3. Support the big ETFs as needed and you’ve successfully earned yourself a massively higher open across the ENTIRE market….and a great opportunity to distribute billions of dollars worth of equities at 1-3% higher than they were worth yesterday.

4. Sell steadily throughout the day to the reinvigorated bulls

Oh, and those futures contracts can be dumped pretty easily throughout the day with a minimal loss. Not a bad price to pay indeed. Even sweeter to pull it off the day before huge employment data that could rock the market….

UPDATE: Eight newspapers drop Coulter in the wake of CPAC remarks

http://mediamatters.org/items/200703120009

As of March 12, eight newspapers have dropped right-wing pundit Ann Coulter's column after remarks Coulter made at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), where she referred to Democratic presidential candidate and former Sen. John Edwards (NC) as a "faggot." On March 8, Media Matters for America published a list of daily newspapers that carried Coulter's column at the time she made her controversial remarks -- as well as the email addresses of the editors of those papers -- and suggested that readers contact the editors to discuss their papers' decisions to carry Coulter's column.

The eighth paper, the Herald & Review of Decatur, Illinois, announced its decision in a March 11 column, in which Herald & Review editor Gary Sawyer cited Coulter's CPAC comments and asserted:

Most of you will think that we're dropping her column in response to that comment. Some will undoubtedly believe that we're caving in to liberals, who have launched what appears to be a national campaign to get newspapers to dump Coulter's column. Others are probably praising us for finally seeing what's wrong with Coulter's column.

Whatever group you find yourself in, you're partially right.

Sawyer further wrote that "questioning someone's sexual orientation in such a vile way goes beyond reasonable comment," adding that "Coulter's column has become a one note symphony." Sawyer also claimed that Coulter "seems to adore the public spotlight a little too much."

As Media Matters has previously noted, seven other newspapers have dropped Coulter's column since her remarks to CPAC, including:

The Lancaster New Era (Pennsylvania)
The Oakland Press (Michigan)
The Mountain Press (Sevierville, Tennessee)
The Sanford Herald (North Carolina)
The Daily Chronicle (DeKalb, Illinois)
The Times (Shreveport, Louisiana)
American Press (Lake Charles, Louisiana)

Kurtz asserted that Obama receives fawning press coverage, ignoring own role in Giuliani's fawning coverage

http://mediamatters.org/items/200703120007

On the March 8 edition of CNN's The Situation Room, CNN host and Washington Post media critic Howard Kurtz said that until a recent story about unpaid parking tickets, presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) "had been getting the most glorious press coverage perhaps in the history of the republic. I mean, the press just acted like this guy walked on water." Kurtz has repeatedly noted what he claims is the fawning treatment Obama gets from the media, but he has not made similar comments about the coverage of the leading Republican presidential candidate, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Indeed, Kurtz himself has used the labels that appear in positive profiles of Giuliani -- 9-11 "hero" and "America's Mayor" -- in his past columns and TV appearances.

Contrary to Kurtz's account, Obama has frequently been the subject of baseless and trivial allegations:

March 13, 2007 -- The actual reason Halliburton and its chairman David Lesar are moving their corporate digs to Dubai is that the UAE's lax laws on corporate record keeping and the opaqueness of business transactions in the emirates will allow the firm to avoid responding to congressional subpoenas for its scandalous war profiteering in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other locations. A source with extensive ties in Dubai also reports that after leaving office, Dick Cheney will be spending "a lot of time in Dubai." WMR was told that Cheney will likely start looking for property in the emirate -- there are a number of highly-secured gated communities springing up in Dubai, which is fast becoming the "Hong Kong" of the Middle East.

Halliburton will also be able to avoid paying U.S. corporate taxes as a UAE-headquartered corporation.

O'Reilly to viewer: "Your so-called compassion helped kill those children" in Bronx fire

http://mediamatters.org/items/200703120002

On the March 9 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor, host Bill O'Reilly responded to an email from a viewer complaining about his statement the previous day that the victims of a March 7 fire in the Bronx in which one adult and eight children were killed "may be illegal aliens" by stating: "Your so-called compassion helped kill those kids." He later added: "It's people like you, [viewer], who promote that kind of chaos in the name of compassion, who look the other way while poor workers and children are exploited by greedy landlords and businesses because you don't like the immigration laws."

Later in the program, Fox News host Geraldo Rivera chastised O'Reilly, claiming that "to make the connection between illegal immigration and that horrific fire in the Bronx two days ago is an injustice to the victims of that fire."

An American Identity Crisis in a Losing War

"The Iraq syndrome is headed our way," writes Ira Chernus.
"A clear and growing majority of Americans now tell pollsters that that the 2003 invasion of Iraq was a mistake, that it's a bad idea to 'surge' more troops into Baghdad, that we need a definite timeline for removing all our troops. The nation seems to be remembering a lesson of the Vietnam War: We can't get security by sending military power abroad. Every time we try to control another country by force of arms, we only end up more troubled and less secure. But the Iraq syndrome is a two-edged sword, and there is no telling which way it will cut in the end.
Remember the 'Vietnam syndrome,' which made its appearance soon after the actual war ended in defeat. It did restrain our appetite for military interventions overseas - but only briefly. By the late 1970s, it had already begun to boomerang. Conservatives denounced the syndrome as evidence of a paralyzing, Vietnam-induced surrender to national weakness. Their cries of alarm stimulated broad public support for an endless military build-up and, of course, yet more imperial interventions. The very idea of such a 'syndrome' implied that what the Vietnam War had devastated was not so much the Vietnamese or their ruined land as the traumatized American psyche. As a concept, it served to mask, if not obliterate, many of the realities of the actual war."

End of Cowboy Diplomacy, Part II?

It was just nine months ago when Newsweek spoke for the conventional wisdom at that moment when it pronounced "The End of Cowboy Diplomacy". The phrase signaled the apparent victory -- at last -- of the State Department-led "realist" wing over hawks led by Vice President Dick Cheney and then-Pentagon chief Donald Rumsfeld in gaining control over the foreign policy of President George W. Bush. One month later, however, war broke out between Lebanon's Hezbollah and Israel, and the hawks, particularly neo-conservatives around Cheney and Rumsfeld, enjoyed a strong resurgence. Bush not only spurned the pleas of Washington's European and Arab allies to press the Jewish state for a ceasefire, but his top Middle East aide, Elliott Abrams, reportedly encouraged it to expand the war into Syria, much to the horror of both his State Department colleagues and his Israeli interlocutors.

Close to Slavery
Guestworker Programs in the United States

"Bound to a single employer and without access to legal resources, guestworkers are:

* routinely cheated out of wages;

* forced to mortgage their futures to obtain low-wage, temporary jobs;

* held virtually captive by employers or labor brokers who seize their documents;

* forced to live in squalid conditions; and,

* denied medical benefits for on-the-job injuries.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel recently put it this way: "This guestworker program's the closest thing I've ever seen to slavery."

Congressman Rangel's conclusion is not mere hyperbole — and not the first time such a comparison has been made. Former Department of Labor official Lee G. Williams described the old "bracero" program — the guestworker program that brought thousands of Mexican nationals to work in the United States during and after World War II — as a system of "legalized slavery." In practice, there is little difference between the bracero program and the current H-2 guestworker program.

The H-2 guestworker system also can be viewed as a modern-day system of indentured servitude. But unlike European indentured servants of old, today's guestworkers have no prospect of becoming U.S. citizens. When their work visas expire, they must leave the United States. They are, in effect, the disposable workers of the U.S. economy.

This report is based on interviews with thousands of guestworkers, a review of the research on guestworker programs, scores of legal cases and the experiences of legal experts from around the country. The abuses described here are too common to blame on a few "bad apple" employers. They are the foreseeable outcomes of a system that treats foreign workers as commodities to be imported as needed without affording them adequate legal safeguards or the protections of the free market.

C. Political Repression and Social Control in the Industrial Revolution.

Even after the expropriation of their land, the working class was not sufficiently powerless. The state still had to regulate the movement of labor, serve as a labor exchange on behalf of capitalists, and maintain order. And historically, this function was most vital when the bargaining power of labor threatened to increase: "one might expect that the efforts of the State in a capitalist society to control wages and to restrict the freedom of movement of the labourer would be greater when the labour reserve was depleted than when it was swollen." Thorold Rogers described the law from the Tudor period until the repeal of the Combination Acts in 1824, as

a conspiracy... to cheat the English workman of his wages, to tie him to the soil, to deprive him of hope, and to degrade him into irremediable poverty.... For more than two centuries and a half the English law, and those who administered the law, were engaged in grinding the English workman down to the lowest pittance, in stamping out every expression or act which indicated any organized discontent, and in multiplying penalties upon him when he thought of his natural rights.

It would, in fact, be diversity if english was still supported in those areas in Miami that are 100% cuban. The fact is that there are little virtual walls of segregation throughout Miami where spanish is the rule, which creates exlusion. I don't like to feel like a stranger in my own country. If you haven't lived there, you are unqualified to comment. Cubans are as welcome in this country as are all cultures. The problem is that Cuba flooded south Florida with vast waves of illegal immigrants that overwhelmed Miami's ability to absorb and integrate the new cultures. The result is not integration of culture, it is merely a wholesale relocation of culture from Cuba to the US. The US is absolutely about diversity, and diversity is awesome, but it's a 2 way street. Look at what's happened in Iraq when we tried to wholesale change their culture, it's a mess. That's what happened to Miami.

Plame's Brewster-Jennings, not Wilson, True Target

It is now clear that the Bush Administration committed treason with Scooters conviction. With RICO the man at the top is responsible.

It is also coming out that plans to destroy Plame’s covert CIA operation Brewster -Jennings was the real target and decided upon before Joe Wilson even wrote his article. The Joe Wilson smear spin is just that, spin that the MSM has swallowed hook line a sinker.

Brewster-Jennings was our Nations most important intelligence operation tracking Nuclear and WMD acquisition and development in the Middle East. Cheney and Bush wanted tnis destroyed so there would be no ‘pissant’ cia trying to meddle in their Iran and Iraq war plans.

It is also rumored that Plame's Brewster-Jennings just prior to Plames exposure had been instrumental in stopping a load of WMD headed for Iraq through Turkey, and it has been conjectured that this was the shipment and Bush operation to plant the WMD’s in Iraq.....

I'm pretty sure they've managed to come get us. My local station can't seem to find the signal lately and when I'm listening online, it says not available.
How'm I supposed to get my fix?

its an interesting business. last week the ohio state troopers pulled a tractor trailer over on i70. two men of southwestern descent were arrested for possession of 176 pounds of cocaine with a street value of 8 million.

i've always thought the $$$ numbers were horribly inflated. in this case you would think that if you were hauling 8M worth of product you would make sure all your i's were dotted and your t's crossed.

Okay, we've revised the Iraq supplemental budget....

Now, if Bush wants to attack Iran, he MUST notify Congress that he has done so within 72 hours!

This is our strongest proviso yet, though it may face some trouble in the Senate.

When did the Transportation Safety Administration become the Transportation SECURITY Administration?

You got it Sam. Why don't we go after the employers of illegal aliens. This is like fighting the drug war by arresting street dealers and ignoring the CIA backed peeps bringing the filth into the country.

I think it is hilarious that during the years that we have soldiers on the ground in Afghanistan, the largest opium harvest ever takes place. Ridiculous.

For those callers that "don't like my tax dollars going to illegal aliens" tell them to stop paying taxes. THERE IS NO LAW THAT SAYS YOU HAVE TO PAY TAXES ON PERSONAL INCOME. Do the research.

As part of his eastern Canadian Universities' tour, professor of Political Science As'ad Abukhalil, known for his blog. “The Angry Arab News Service,” sat down with us at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada to answer some of our questions about, the so called "Peace Process", western support for tyrants and dictators in the Middle East, the Occupation and destruction of Iraq and its people, the US's role in sectarian agitation throughout the middle east, theologocentrism, American support for fundamentalism, the social situation in Palestine, American endorsement of criminal warlords in Somalia, the Israeli lobby, media coverage of the war on Lebanon, and the so called liberal left. Here is a selection of some of the most notable questions and answers.

After listening to the comments that Tancredo made about Miami on your program, I have to ask "Why does anyone pay the slightest bit of attention to him?" I lived in Colorado up until a couple of years ago and remember an incident that was reported on by several news organizations regarding Tancredo hiring illegal immigrants to do the remodeling work on his basement. (September, 2002) He said it wasn't his job to check their status, he was JUST LOOKING FOR THE LOWEST PRICE! In other words--illegal workers are terrible for this country, but good for Tom who wants his basement finished cheaply (or his fruits and vegetables cheap, or his roof done cheaply, etc.)
For details on this story, do a search on Tom Tancredo Remodeling and you'll find a number of references--including Fox News!
