Dennis Kucinich called the boycotting of the Fox News debate...

"If you want to be the President of the United States, you can't be afraid to deal with people with whom you disagree politically,"

Kucinich said. "No one is further removed from Fox's political philosophy than I am, but fear should not dictate decisions that affect hundreds of millions of Americans and billions of others around the world who are starving for real leadership."

"I'm prepared to discuss the war, health care, trade, or any other issue anytime, anywhere, with any audience, answering any question from any media. And any candidate who won't shouldn't be President of the United States."

Bob Hebert has a must read column in NYT today about a report released by the Southern Poverty Law Center:

http://select.nytimes.com/2007/03/12/opinion/12herbert.html?hp

not surprisingly, a key paragraph declares how bush loves guest workers and wants to expand the program.

Let's not forget that it is MORE than just firing some of the Federal attorneys. When a new president replaces the lot of them, they get confirmed by Congress. Because of the PATRIOT act, this change was going to be done without such confirmation. Add that to the fact that prior presidents have not fired sitting attorneys for political reasons makes this much different.
Regardless of anyone saying "it's been done before", no -- especially not with this major difference.

OPM's Ruling On Charity Drive Draws Protest

The nation's largest workplace charity drive -- the Combined Federal Campaign conducted in government offices -- has tossed out a key rule, and that has prompted protests and appeals to members of Congress from nonprofit groups.

The controversy involves a decision by the Office of Personnel Management, which administers the charity drive, to drop a requirement that charities spend no more than 25 percent of their revenue on fundraising and other overhead expenses. Charities that exceeded the cap were required to give the OPM a reason and come up with a plan to reduce overhead to stay in the campaign.

Another $5 billion "missing" in action
Not that this made much of an impact in the "news" but it appears that we have $5 billion MIA or as explained by our leadership:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Government health officials said they can’t show how $5 billion spent on preparations for a bio-terror attack or flu pandemic has made the country safer.

Congress approved the money five years ago in response to the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 and an anthrax scare triggered by tainted letters sent to congressional offices.
State health departments now typically get tens of millions of dollars to prepare for bio-terrorism each year, compared with hundreds of thousands before the attacks.

Congress set criteria and charged the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with evaluating how well the dollars have been spent. CDC officials said improvement in emergency preparedness is hard to measure."

The U.S. attorney scandal and the federal probe of a Pennsylvania pol
"Meet Bob Casey's campaign team: A Philadelphia politician who gave Casey almost four-hundred grand. A Philly businessman who gave Casey 31,000. A New Jersey developer -- 100,000 dollars. And several more of Casey's largest contributors are under investigation, including Casey's hand-picked campaign finance chairman. The more we learn about Bob Casey, the more concerned we ought to be."
-- Campaign TV ad for then-Sen. Rick Santorum, first aired in Sept. 2006.
If you live in Pennsylvania, you probably remember this commercial, which aired about two months before Election Day. Democrat and now Sen. Bob Casey was on his way to a landslide victory over the GOP incumbent Santorum. Santorum, despite two terms in Washington, was trailing by double digits the entire race, and the ad, with its grainy black-and-white images of actors portraying sleazy pols (with a jail door ultimately slamming on them) reeked of desperation.

But that was before we knew what we knew today, that the Bush adminstration was involved in a process of politicizing U.S. attorney offices around the country, and that there would be growing evidence of pressure on career prosecutors to either push harder against Democratic pols or ease up on Republicans.

Of the four politicians mentioned in the Santorum ad, each was the subject of a federal prosecution by regional U.S. attorney's offices -- two here in Philadelphia, one in New Jersey, and one in Puerto Rico.

Ironically, or perhaps not ironically, only one of the four men -- the New Jersey developer, Charles Kushner -- has been convicted of a crime, in 2004. The first Philadelphia pol mentioned in the ad is state Sen. Vince Fumo, who was finally indicted last month after a lengthy four-year investigation. The second Philly donor is the late Ronald A. White, the City Hall power broker who was indicted on corruption charges but died in late 2004 before his case went to trial.

The fourth pol under investigation and featured in the Santorum ad has to this date never been charged with any crime at all, and he is the most intriguing case. His name is Robert Feldman, and when Casey ran unsucessfully for governor in 2002, Feldman served as the campaign finance chief. However, he did not work on Casey's 2006 Senate race.

Take a step back for a minute. The reason the scandal over fired prosecutors has exploded in Washington is because at least eight prosecutors were replaced under an obscure provision slipped into the USA Patriot Act that made it possible to install interim U.S. attorneys without Senate approval.

I hate having to search through aother links at other stations for a stream. Other station feeds always manage to mangle the show - either cutting off the intro to each segment, or running over the end of each segment for commercials and crap. This is especially worse during Randi's show when they try to cram extra commercials in.

EVERY DAY for the past 2 weeks I have been listening to the show through the "listen live" link on the AAR website. EVERY DAY sometime during the show the feed cuts off out of the blue and says "This stream is unavailable - please try again later." UNAVAILABLE??!!?? I was just listening to it!! I KNOW it is available!!!

I am unable to listen to Hartmann, so I am unsure if it does it during his show, but it does the same thing (even worse) during Randi. During Randi, I cannot even get the stream to come up before her show starts.

What gives? The new owners cut off the number of available streams? And why does the stream cut off after I have already "reserved" a stream for myself, then telling me it is not available???

This is driving me crazy - I want to listen, and I do not have the $$$ to pay for a premium subscription. I am going to see if anyone is posting Sam's show either through torrent, newsgroups, or a place like the White Rose Society so I can listen.

Please look into this and find out why the streams are cutting off. I am sure I am not the only one this is happening to.

Among recent outages:

-- A squirrel caused a power outage in October that shut down Merced College, southeast of San Francisco, for half the day.

-- In January, a squirrel cut power to 4,500 customers in Amarillo, Tex.

-- Hundreds of gallons of raw sewage poured into Mobile Bay in Alabama after a squirrel cut power to a sewage lift station there.

Stopping the squirrels is not easy.

"Those guys are awfully clever," said Tim Fox with Ameren, which provides electricity to St. Louis-area homes and businesses.

"When they want to get into something, they do," Fox said.

In Lincoln, dubbed a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation, "squirrel guards" have been placed on all 19,391 transformers.

The guards vary. Some are plastic or silicone caps that protect the point where the power line and the transformer meet. The "Critter Guard" features a flat disk that spins around whenever a squirrel tries to climb past. Others deliver a minor shock to the squirrel to scare it off.

PECO, which powers Philadelphia and its surrounding counties, spends $1 million a year on squirrel guards to stop outages from "those rascally little varmints," Engel said.

The utilities say they're seeing some success. PECO has seen its squirrel-related outages tumble from 11,605 in 2003 to 1,345 in 2006.

But squirrels adapt to the technology, forcing the utilities to switch to different forms of what's known in the business as "wildlife abatement technology."

"Whenever we think we've got them figured out, they try something else," Engelman said.

Costa Rica: Why we reject CAFTA

Accused Narco Banker to Host Bush-Calderón Meeting in Yucatán

Eight years ago, an “anti-drug” summit was held between US President Bill Clinton and his Mexican counterpart Ernesto Zedillo on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. The February 1999 meeting took place at a hacienda in the town of Temozón Sur, near kilometer 148 of the Mérida-Campeche highway, a posh estate owned by Roberto Hernández Ramírez, then owner of Banamex, the National Bank of Mexico.

Hernández had been accused – publicly and via a criminal complaint – by the daily newspaper Por Esto! of trafficking tons of Colombian cocaine through his Caribbean coasta properties on that peninsula since 1997. The newspaper published photos of the drug, the smuggling boats, the Colombian garbage strewn upon the shores, the airfield and small airplanes that, witnesses testified, brought the cocaine north to the United States, with confirmation from sources as diverse as local fishermen and high officials of the Mexican Armed Forces.

I covered that presidential summit eight years ago, investigated the charges for three months, and published the first of many reports that May (see “Clinton and His Mexican Narco-Pals,” Boston Phoenix, May 17, 1999).
...
Eight years later, both countries have new presidents, and both rose to those posts via brazen acts of electoral fraud. Today, Air Force One will deliver George W. Bush to the Yucatán capital of Mérida, where he will hold two days of meetings with his Mexican counterpart Felipe Calderón. Part of those meetings will be held at the same Temozon Sur Hacienda of Roberto Hernández where Clinton and Zedillo met in 1999. The hotel zone of Mérida and the town of Temozon Sur are today “under siege” by more than 3,000 US and Mexican soldiers and police officers; 900 of whom are camped out in tents behind the Hyatt Regency and the Fiesta Americana. Residents of these places are blocked from walking in their own neighborhoods. Demonstrators are kept walled out miles away. The corporate media will – if past is prologue – withhold the uncomfortable facts from the public about the narco hacienda where the presidents will meet but it will, no doubt, quote the presidents as they praise each other’s heroism in the so-called fight against drug trafficking.

Josh Wolf stands for a restoration of free press

March 12, 2007

Columnist Debra Saunders (online, Feb. 28) seems to think that she’s a real journalist, while Josh Wolf, because he isn’t employed by corporate media, is somehow not a “real” journalist. The Northern California Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists selected Josh as a “Journalist of the Year” recipient and he will receive another award from them on March 13, being recognized for a James Madison Freedom of Information award for online journalism.

Josh did not film an attack upon a police officer, nor did he film an attempt to burn a police car, the flimsy excuse used by the federal prosecutors to get this into federal court and avoid the California Shield Law. The question of the attack upon a police officer is a matter for the district attorney, not the federal courts.

The officer’s sexual orientation has absolutely nothing to do with anything and is not even related to the title of the article. I think in a mystery it would be called “a red herring.”

I am Josh’s mother and I am proud of his principled stand for restoration of a free press in this country.

Yes, I absolutely do. Understand that I am very left and very idealistic, and I am concerned enough about that "high water" that will cause a massive die off, in more than just our species, in my lifetime. Civil/human rights and the promotion of peace are the next things on my last, but yeah, that fucking "high water" concerns me more than anything else.

PARAMILITARIES INCREASE PRESENCE IN ZAPATISTA TERRITORY

Paramilitary groups affiliated with the Organization for Defense of
Indigenous and Campesino Rights (Opddic) are increasingly threatening peace and stability in Zapatista territories, particularly in the Selva regions around Ocosingo. On March 7, a group of 200 paramilitaries, including Pedro Chulin and Carlos Moreno, leaders of Opddic, gathered in the central square of Ocosingo. Carlos Vazquez, a journalist with Promedios, and Luna Giron, a human rights defender, were beaten by the paramilitaries as they tried to videotape the demonstration. The following day, the Junta de Buen Gobierno in Morelia denounced the attack, the latest in a series of increasingly violent actions by Opddic:

"The strategy of Opddic is to invade lands that we recovered since the 1994....

World Bank pledges $180 mln to Congo's ruined capital

KINSHASA, March 9 (Reuters) - The World Bank has pledged $180 million in grants to revamp Democratic Republic of Congo's dilapidated capital, Kinshasa, under new proceedures for countries in most urgent need, the bank's chief said on Friday. Congo held its first democratic elections in more than four decades last year and many Congolese hope the ballot will usher in a new era of prosperity and stability after years of mismanagement and armed conflict.

"We need to move fast, much faster than we normally do in long-term development programmes that have a six-year time horizon," World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz told journalists at the end of a two-day visit to the vast, mineral-rich central African nation.

"The people of this country have suffered too much. They need to see the results of peace. They need to see them in six months, not in six years," he said.

Congo is recovering from a 1998-2003 war that killed an estimated 4 million people through conflict-related violence, hunger, and disease. Much of the country's already neglected infrastructure was destroyed or pillaged during the war years.

The World Bank grants target building or improving basic infrastructure in Kinshasa, which, despite having never been the scene of major fighting, is largely in ruins.

The city, with its estimated population of around 7 million, experiences daily power outages.

---Despite living atop massive mineral reserves, most Congolese live in poverty.-----

"We are changing our procedures to be able to respond much more rapidly than we have in the past. We have, in fact, gotten our board to approve a whole new set of procedures for countries in emergency situations," Wolfowitz said.

Government programmes announced last month by Prime Minister Antoine Gizenga are expected to cost cash-strapped Congo around $14 billion over the next five years. Around 51 percent is due to be financed by international donors.

RealPlayer craps out on a regular basis and like others once I try to get back in I am told to "tune in during regular broadcast hours."

$6.95 a month is a bit steep to buy the show each month. Plus, the web site gives no assurances when the download will be available. Anyone know when they get the show online?

I appreciate that AA is running at full tilt and they probably have too few people to handle these tech challenges. But it still sucks.

Putin Critics Dying Mysteriously
By: Nicole Belle @ 6:30 AM - PDT
ABC's The Blotter :

Respected Russian journalist Ivan Safronov, who reported on military affairs, mysteriously plunged to his death from the 5th floor of his apartment building Friday, making him the 14th journalist to die under questionable circumstances in Putin's Russia, according to statistics compiled by the Committee to Protect Journalists. [..]

Polikovskaya's killing, the 13th since Putin took office, led the Committee to Protect Journalists to declare Russia "the third deadliest country in the world for journalists" after Iraq and Algeria in their recent report, "Deadly News." All of the cases remain unsolved.

According to a report in this morning's Moscow Times, Safronov, who wrote for the Russian business newspaper "Kommersant," fell head first and fully clothed from a 5th floor window although he lived in an apartment on the 3rd floor of the building.

The Times reported the FSB — the Federal Security Bureau, which is the successor agency to the KGB — was unhappy with Safronov's reporting on sensitive weapons systems.

Safronov's death adds to the list of critics of the Putin regime and the FSB, who have died or been injured in strange circumstances in just the past six months

Investor's Business Daily thinks Putin couldn't be this thick, but even NewsMax (hardly a liberal publication) finds it hard to believe that all these people connected to critics of Putin's are meeting their end under strange circumstances.

Calls Increase For Attorney General Gonzales to Resign

Pressure is increasing on President Bush to dismiss Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Gonzales has been at the center of a pair of recent scandals involving the political purging of eight U.S. Attorneys and the FBI's misuse of the Patriot Act to gain personal information on thousands of Americans. On Sunday New York Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer appeared on CBS's Face the Nation and called for Gonzales to step down. The editors of the New York Times have also called for his resignation. This comes as more details have emerged in the scandal over the purging of the US Attorneys.

Rita Cosby Out At MSNBC
Eat The Press | Rachel Sklar | March 12, 2007 09:13 AM

Per Variety:MSNBC's Rita Cosby, rumored for a while to be on the outs at the network, is leaving MSNBC to "pursue other interests," according to MSNBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines. Word on the street has been that her contract, which was to expire on April 1, 2007, wasn't going to be renewed. Cosby confirmed it in a statement, noting that her show, "Rita Cosby Live and Direct," was supplanted this summer by the late-primetime "Doc Blocks" and that there hadn't really been anything else for her at the network (paraphrasing here, but that's essentially it). Cosby, whose last day is March 31st, said she was "committed to devoting my attention full-time to my work and obligations at the network" until then; she has done so recently with scoops in the all-important Anna Nicole Smith case, gaining exclusive access to her funeral in Bahamas. Hey, it was a scoop.

BUT I haven't found anyone of my liberal friends that have heard of the march. Nothing on CNN of course and not even on Air America and other liberal outlets.
Que pasa? Why is this not being publicized ? Why, in fact isn't Air America SHOUTING ABOUT IT. We know that much of America is more concerned with Anna Nicole, but some of us care about the sorry mess we are in and about bringing about regime-change at home. For those of us that do shouldn't we get just a tiny amount of publicity?
On a related note, are there any of you who are as disgusted as I over the failure of a SINGLE member of congress to demand impeachment.
