Gonzo Watch! Day Three!

It's Wednesday! Hump day!

Gonzo not gonzo. Yet.

gonzo_muppet.jpg gonzo_clasp.jpg

Coming up this hour: Christy Harvey of the Center for American Progress. Her site, Mic Check Radio, has a timeline and "fast facts" breakdown of the U.S. attorney firings.

A must-stop on your journey through the Gonzo story

Mortgage delinquency isn't just for high-risk borrowers anymore...

No Child Left Behind to leave children behind?

"There is a zero percent chance that we will ever reach a 100 percent target," said Robert L. Linn, co-director of the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards and Student Testing at UCLA. "But because the title of the law is so rhetorically brilliant, politicians are afraid to change this completely unrealistic standard. They don't want to be accused of leaving some children behind."

The poet Muriel Rukeyser said the universe is composed of stories, not of atoms. The physicist Werner Heisenberg declared that the universe is made of music, not of matter.

And we believe that if you habitually expose yourself to toxic stories and music, you could wind up living in the wrong universe, where it's impossible to become the gorgeous genius you were born to be. That's why we implore you to nourish yourself with delicious, nutritious tales and tunes that inspire you to exercise your willpower for your highest good.

How did it come to be that what we call the news is reported solely by
journalists? There are so many other kinds of events besides the narrow band favored by that highly specialized brand of storytellers. Indeed, there are many phenomena that can literally not even
be perceived by journalists. Their training, their temperament, and their ambitions make vast areas of human experience invisible to them.

"Ninety-six percent of the cosmos puzzles astronomers." I loved reading that headline on the CNN website. It showed that our culture's equivalents of high priests, the scientists, are humble enough to acknowledge that the universe is made mostly of stuff they can't even detect, let alone study.

If only the journalists were equally modest. Since they're not, we'll say it:

The majority of everything that happens on this planet is invisible to them.

White House turning on Gonzales? From the NYT:

[Gonzales’] appearance underscored what two Republicans close to the Bush administration described as a growing rift between the White House and the attorney general. Mr. Gonzales has long been a confidant of the president but has aroused the ire of lawmakers of both parties on several issues, including the administration’s domestic eavesdropping program.

The two Republicans, who spoke anonymously so they could share private conversations with senior White House officials, said top aides to Mr. Bush, including Fred F. Fielding, the new White House counsel, were concerned that the controversy had so damaged Mr. Gonzales’s credibility that he would be unable to advance the White House agenda on national security matters, including terrorism prosecutions.

“I really think there’s a serious estrangement between the White House and Alberto now,” one of the Republicans said.

State GOP Chairman With Close Rove Ties Admits Pressuring Attorney
The Seattle Times reports tonight that a chairman of the Washington state Republican Party with ties to Karl Rove pressured U.S. Attorney John McKay to launch a criminal probe during the hotly contested 2004 governor’s race, which had been certified in favor of the Democratic candidate. The ex-chairman, Chris Vance, “said that he was in contact with the White House’s political office at the time.”

Vance said then-U.S. Attorney John McKay made it clear he would not discuss whether his office was investigating allegations of voter fraud in the election. He said McKay cut off the conversation.

“I thought it was part of my job, to be a conduit,” Vance, who now operates a consulting business, said in a telephone interview. “We had a Republican secretary of state, a Republican prosecutor in King County and a Republican U.S. attorney, and no one was doing anything.“

Vance’s revelation may be new evidence of a wider level of involvement by Karl Rove in the U.S. Attorney purge. Vance and Rove reportedly worked closely on state politics. The Republican gubernatorial candidate in 2004, Dino Rossi, was the candidate “Vance and Rove wanted,” the Seattle Times noted in 2005. Rove and Vance also reportedly worked to get Rep. Jennifer Dunn (R-WA) to launch a Senate bid.

Edwards, Clinton call on Gonzales to resign. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) has joined former Sen. John Edwards (D-NC) in calling for Alberto Gonzales to step down.

UPDATE: Dan Froomkin weighs in:

No one would deny that one of the duties of the president of the United States is to place people of his choosing in key positions throughout the executive branch, including in key law-enforcement positions. […]

But in law-enforcement jobs — such as the attorney general, the director of the FBI, and the country’s 93 U.S. attorneys — overtly partisan behavior is a more troubling problem. While the men and women in those positions serve at the pleasure of the president, it is also a critically important part of their job to remain independent.

That’s because it’s flatly un-American for the law to be used as a political weapon. It erodes public confidence in the justice system, and offends the American commitment to fairness. It’s the sort of thing that, quite properly, can lead to impeachment.

Please read the message board thread, http://forums.therandirhodesshow.com/index...=108345&hl= , and the ones it links to. The DOJ scandal does not stop with Gonzo, it goes straight to the top, and hope you can investigate and explain it better than I can.

I haven't found the transcripts of the entire Gonzal-ass confirmation hearing, so I don't have all the info I'd like, but I at least found some responses Gonzo made to Feingold, assuring him of the AG's independence from the White House and dedication to the Constitution, both of which he has failed to live up to.

The confirmation of Alberto Gonzales really amounted to a White House takeover of the Department of Justice. In February 2005, when he was confirmed, Gonzales chose to take three White House lawyers with him to the DOJ, "Ted Ullyot to be his chief of staff, D. Kyle Sampson as his deputy chief of staff, and Raul Yanes as counselor."

As reported in the Washington Post, "Ullyot and Yanes were the coordinators of the White House's response to the investigation into the leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity. That investigation is being handled by, uh, the Justice Department."

Sampson had some usefulness too, as we've learned. It was also in February of 2005 that White House Counsel, Harriet Miers, made the suggestion to Kyle Sampson that all 93 USA's be fired. Great idea (not), but what good would that do if they couldn't fill the positions with USA's that met the administrations low standards.

Enter the Republicon Congress. In March of 2006, the PATRIOT Act Reauthorization went to conference committee, where it was completely rewritten. Section 502, the "little known provision", was inserted. In deference to the Constitution's Appointment Clause and the Vacancy Reform Act, it allowed the AG to appoint interim USA's INDEFINITELY, circumventing Senate confirmation.

But that's unconstitutional, isn't it? No problem, just pack the court. In October 2006, Harriet Miers was nominated BY PRESIDENT BUSH to fill the vacancy.

Despite Miers' defeat, the DOJ went ahead with limited firings in December 2006.

GO GAY: END THE WAR IN IRAQ

Now Is the Time for Gays & Lesbians to End the War

Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Peter Pace thinks it is immoral to be gay or to engage in homosexual acts.

Funny, he doesn’t seem to find the killing of men, women and children in an illegal war based on lies and deception to be “immoral.” I guess he might loose his job if he stood up for the real truth. That is if he were truly a moral person himself.

Funny, he doesn’t seem to mind that gays have given their service to this country and have given their lives as well. It’s ok with Pace – just don’t say you’re gay.

Pace doesn’t mind that gays and lesbians have to pay taxes from their hard earned wages to pay for a bloated, unethical and largely unnecessary American military which won’t even let a gay person be truthful about their basic identity. Why in the hell should they have to pay taxes for that? If that isn’t second class citizenship, then what is?

Now is the time to end the war in Iraq. All gay and lesbian military need to come out completely and then we will find out what the military is gonna do. We might find some surprises in store for General Pace. We might find out that he needs gays and lesbians a lot more than they need him.

Pace needs to resign now. Our military personnel need to look into the mirror and ask how they have become God’s arbiters of morality. Until gays and lesbians are openly accepted into the military without hiding anything, gays and lesbians shouldn’t have to pay taxes to support a bloated national budget of military expenses for a system that blatantly discriminates against them. Gays and lesbians need to get up, come out and leave the military to the “real” men and women. See how long it works.

Each day more and more ignorance comes out of the leadership of the Bush administration. Each new day, American citizens pay the price in lives, money and world respect for the ignorant and backwards behavior of Bush and his cohorts.

How much more do we have to take?

Dems Abandon Limits on Iran Attack

On Capital Hill, Democratic leaders have announced they’re now abandoning an effort to put limits on President Bush’s authority to take military action against Iran. Democrats had included a provision in the new military spending bill that would have required Congressional approval for any military confrontation with Iran. But the requirement was dropped after several Democrats argued it would take away the use of force as a bargaining tool over Iran’s nuclear program.

Dude, the Muppets are such a frieend to the ganj, man... Hey Sam. Not much today, Im in and out all day...But I wanted to post this.

Wikipedias definions of types of government, I was looking up the definition, of civics, which I never took so no one ever had a chance to screw me up on.

Civic theory
Most civic theories are more trusting of public institutions, and can be characterizing on a scale from least (mob rule) to most (the totalitarian) degree of trust placed in key public institutions. At the risk of extreme oversimplification, an historical view of civic theory in action suggests that the theories be ranked as follows:

Mob rule — trusting of the instincts and power of large groups—no consistent civics at all
Anarchism — no government or other hierarchy, a common ethical code enforced only by personal governance and voluntary association, some means of preventing or ending mob rule
Minarchy — a minimal hierarchy—e.g. sometimes said to include eco-anarchism
Libertarianism — a fixed set of rules that define property rights and are enforced strictly - static, with no need to make new law
Direct democracy — decisions made directly by citizens without guidance or moral suasion, e.g. as advocated by H. Ross Perot, usually relying on multiple choice laid out by experts
Deliberative democracy — decisions made by locally-grouped citizens obligated to participate in consensus decision making process, e.g. as advocated by Ralph Nader
Bioregional democracy — a deliberative democracy regulated by a caste of highly-qualified scientific advisors (both ecologists and ethicists) who can use scientific method to challenge or veto major ecological decisions, means of measuring well-being or selecting criteria for moral purchasing by the entire bioregional state
Technocracy — reliance on castes of scientists, e.g. doctors to rule society, and define risk for the whole society - sometimes generalized into anticipatory democracy. Can be interpreted as leading to or including kleptocracy
Aristocracy — general trust in one family- or wealth-defined group in society to rule, e.g. scientists, lawyers, doctors or members of particular noble families. Includes plutocracy
Constitutional monarchy — a monarch, possibly purely symbolic and devoted to moral example, avoiding vesting such popularity in any less trustworthy political figure—typically tied to at least some deliberative institutions, and making the monarch a tiebreaker or mediator or coach, e.g. Queen Elizabeth II and Tony Blair
Representative democracy — a political class of elected representatives is trusted to carry out duties for the electors - these may be responsible to any group in society, or none, once elected.
Absolute monarchy — a monarch who rules for life and can pass on this rule to his or her heirs, but is responsible to some social ideal or culture that has trained him or her to carry out these duties, e.g. Louis XIV, Hirohito, most dynastic Emperors, Augustus Caesar.
Dictatorship — a political or military ruler who has the powers but not the moral authority of the monarch, e.g. Saddam Hussein, Japanese Tokugawa Shoguns, Roman Emperors after Augustus.
Totalitarian — a dictator who has the moral authority of the monarch without necessarily being raised in any particular tradition—and who is vested with this trust by virtue of holding power itself, e.g. Napoleon, Hitler, any dynasty-founding Chinese Emperor.
Note: examples are included only to help familiarize readers with the basic idea of the scale—they are not intended to be conclusive or to categorize these individuals other than the civics that they exercise or exemplify.

Civics refers not to the ethical or moral or political basis by which a ruler acquires power, but only to the processes and procedures they follow in actually exercising it. Thus, some figures, e.g. Napoleon, count as totalitarian because they instituted a legal code and altered rules of succession to favor themselves and their families. Meanwhile, other figures who were arguably more cruel or arbitrary are ranked as examples of lesser public trust, because in practice they followed clearer procedures. Some unique figures, like Mao Zedong or Stalin, are hard to characterize as they followed the form (but some would say not the substance) of consultation and deliberation—although disagreeing with these figures could mean exile or death.

Sorry it so long, you all probably already know it back to front. But given the current administration, the topics, and where it stems from, given the usage and manipulation of language....I thought it relevant.

Foreclosures May Hit 1.5 Million in U.S. Housing Bust (Update3)

By Bob Ivry

March 12 (Bloomberg) -- Hold on to your assets. The deepest housing decline in 16 years is about to get worse.

As many as 1.5 million more Americans may lose their homes, another 100,000 people in housing-related industries could be fired, and an estimated 100 additional subprime mortgage companies that lend money to people with bad or limited credit may go under, according to realtors, economists, analysts and a Federal Reserve governor. Financial stocks also could extend their declines over mortgage default worries.

The spring buying season, when more than half of all U.S. home sales are made, has been so disappointing that the National Association of Home Builders in Washington now expects purchases to fall for the sixth consecutive quarter after it predicted a gain just last month.

``The correction will last another year,'' said Mark Zandi, chief economist for Moody's Economy.com in West Chester, Pennsylvania. ``Fewer people qualifying for mortgages means there will be less borrowers, and that will weigh on demand.''

A five-year housing boom that ended in 2006 expanded home- ownership to a record number of U.S. households. Now it has given way to mounting defaults, failing subprime mortgage companies and an increasing number of unsold homes.

"Scooter" Libby's Real Name Revealed: "I" Stands For Irve

It all started with this item in today's Washington Examiner. FishbowlDC's Patrick Gavin asked me to answer this question for the "Yeas & Nays" column: "What will Scooter Libby's nickname be in prison?" My immediate response was "Irwin!" because what better nickname for a guy named Scooter than the given name he never, ever uses? And so I submitted something along those lines, telling Patrick that I was going to double-check and make sure it was Irwin.

A Channel 4 documentary claimed that climate change was a conspiratorial lie. But an analysis of the evidence it used shows the film was riddled with distortions and errors.

A Channel 4 documentary that claimed global warming is a swindle was itself flawed with major errors which seriously undermine the programme's credibility, according to an investigation by The Independent.

The Great Global Warming Swindle, was based on graphs that were distorted, mislabelled or just plain wrong. The graphs were nevertheless used to attack the credibility and honesty of climate scientists.

*US Accused of Secret Renditions in East Africa*

The US is being accused of bringing its practice of secretly transferring prisoners to East Africa. Human rights advocates in Kenya say the Bush administration has engineered the secret transfers of more than 150 people captured during the recent conflict in Somalia.

The prisoners are said to include children as young as seven months.

They were held in Kenya before being transferred to secret locations in Somalia and Ethiopia.

The McClatchy news service says the State Department declined to respond to questions over its involvement.

*Guam Prosecutor Dismissed Following Abramoff Probe*

Meanwhile, two Democratic Congressmembers are asking Congress to investigate another attorney dismissal, this one from five years ago.

Congressmembers George Miller of California and Nick Rahall of West Virginia want to look into the firing of Frederick Black of the island of Guam.

Black had begun investigating the activities of the now-convicted Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff at the time.

The probe ended shortly after Black was let go.

NYT: Congress should broaden attorney probe. From its editorial today:

Congress should broaden the investigation to determine whether any other prosecutors were forced out for not caving in to political pressure — or kept on because they did.

There was, for example, the decision by United States Attorney Chris Christie of New Jersey to open an investigation of Senator Bob Menendez just before his hotly contested re-election last November. Republicans, who would have held the Senate if Mr. Menendez had lost, used the news for attack ads. Then there was the career United States attorney in Guam who was removed by Mr. Bush in 2002 after he started investigating the superlobbyist Jack Abramoff. The prosecutor was replaced. The investigation was dropped.

The Black Cats

Black Cats were symbolically associated with witchcraft and evil. In Hebrew and Babylonian folklore, cats are compared to serpents, coiled on a hearth. Originally in Britain and Europe, a black cat crossing one's path was considered good luck; however they were also seen by the church as associated with witches. It was the church, who considered them unholy and pagan, who altered their reputation. The black cat was still usually seen as good luck, however in the USA and parts of Europe which were affected by the witch hunts the association with witches caused them to be considered as bad luck. In places which weren't affected particularly by witch hunts, they retained their status as good luck, and are still considered as such in Japan, Britain and Egypt.

Since the 1880s, the color black has been associated with anarchism. The black cat, in an alert, fighting stance was later adopted as an anarchist symbol. More specifically, the black cat -- often called the "sab cat" or "sabo-tabby"

Some Fun Facts from US Attorney PurgeGate

by Mary
Question: Who slipped the provision in the Patriot Act?

Answer: An aide to Arlen Spector at the behest of the Justice Department according to Joe Conason:

At the behest of the Justice Department, an aide to Sen. Arlen Specter☼ slipped a provision into the bill that permitted the White House to place its own appointees in vacant U.S. attorney positions permanently and without Senate confirmation. So silently was this sleight of hand performed that Specter himself now claims, many months later, to have been completely unaware of the amendment's passage. (Of course, it would be nice if the senators actually read the legislation before they voted, particularly when they claim to be the authors.)

The staffer who reportedly performed this bit of dirty work is Michael O'Neill, a law professor at George Mason University and former clerk for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. As the Washington Times explained when O'Neill was appointed as the Senate Judiciary Committee's chief counsel, many observers believed that Specter had hired him to reassure conservatives of his loyalty to the Bush White House. Right-wing distrust had almost ousted the Pennsylvania moderate from the Judiciary chairmanship, and appointing O'Neill was apparently the price for keeping that post.

Spector says he didn't know about it. What's clear now is he's increasingly upset about how it was used.

Dems: worried about upsetting Israel

by soccerdad
2 updates below

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic leaders are stripping from a military spending bill for the war in Iraq a requirement that President Bush gain approval from Congress before moving against Iran.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and other leaders agreed to remove the requirement concerning Iran after conservative Democrats as well as other lawmakers worried about its possible impact on Israel, officials said Monday. link

That about sums it up. Lets not worry about the US voting public, lets not worry about Bush abusing his powers, and lets not worry about an attack on Iran starting WWIII with terror attacks on the US. Yes the only concern is that the AIPAC might turn off the money faucet.

***UPDATE***
Cenk Uygur is really angry about this and makes a very important point

These days the Israeli lobby no longer lobbies for Israel. They lobby for the most right-wing, war-mongering part of the Israeli government. They don't represent the Israeli people or the whole government. They certainly don't represent what's in Israel's best interest. They only represent hard right-wing, Likud politics.

If they represented what was in Israel's best interest, why on God's green earth would they have lobbied for the Iraq War? All that war has done is destabilize the region, created more Sunni and Shiite extremists - both of whom hate Israel, and strengthened Iran. The Iraq War has been an utter disaster for Israel. And yet the so-called Israeli lobby lobbied for it.

**Update 2**

The night before Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi addressed the American Israel Public Affairs Committee's (AIPAC) annual conference, House Democrats removed language from an Iraq supplemental bill that would have prevented President Bush from attacking Iran without Congressional approval. link

Ohio Election Workers Sentenced

Wednesday March 14, 2007 12:16 AM

By THOMAS J. SHEERAN

Associated Press Writer

CLEVELAND (AP) - Two county election workers were sentenced Tuesday to 18 months in prison for rigging a recount of 2004 presidential election ballots so they could avoid a longer, detailed review.

Jacqueline Maiden, 60, a Cuyahoga County election coordinator who was the board's third-highest ranking employee, and ballot manager Kathleen Dreamer, 40, each were convicted of a felony count of negligent misconduct of an elections employee.

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Peter Corrigan allowed the women to remain free on bail pending appeal, but indicated he thought there was a more widespread conspiracy among election officials.

``I can't help but feel there's more to this story,'' Corrigan said.

Anti-Bush protests in Mexico City

Hundreds of demonstrators have rioted outside the US embassy in Mexico City, in the latest protest against President George W Bush's tour of Latin America.

Protesters burned US flags and threw stones at police guarding the building.

Tear gas was used to disperse the crowds. Several people were injured, including a number of police officers.

The violence came hours after Mr Bush pledged to reform controversial immigration laws, during two-day talks with Mexican President Felipe Calderon.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has used a parallel trip to speak out against what he calls the interference of the "American empire".

Mr Chavez' last stop was Haiti where he signed a deal granting the island 14,000 barrels of crude a day as a beneficiary of Venezuela's PetroCaribe initiative, which offers regional governments discounted oil supplies.

In a joint press conference, Haitian President Rene Preval also said his country had signed a three-way deal with close allies Venezuela and Cuba on health care, energy and oil.

Democrats suggest 'monthly' oversight of FCC, admonish chairman RAW STORY
Published: Wednesday March 14, 2007

"Democratic lawmakers took Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin to task over a number of the agency’s policies," the WALL STREET JOURNAL'S Washington Wire reports. Excerpts:

#
At a hearing before the House Commerce Committee’s telecommunications panel, Commerce Chairman John Dingell of Michigan said the FCC is overstepping its bounds and usurping local authority with its recent policy to change video franchises. “If reform of that regulatory structure is necessary, then it is Congress’s prerogative to take such action as we have done before,” Dingell scolded. “It is not the role of the FCC. The commission chose to ignore the well-settled divisions of responsibilities, that is unwise.”

Dingell suggested the telecommunications subcommittee might have to hold oversight hearings “every month” in order to ensure the FCC is doing its job appropriately.

Indeed, Massachusetts Rep. Edward Markey, chairman of the telecommunications panel, told Martin that he could expect to be a “frequent visitor” before the subcommittee.

There are 3 relevant votes on the Dems' binding Iraq legislation [the one mandating that we begin withdrawing combat troops as recommeneded by the Baker-Hamilty Commission] on the Senate floor today.

#1: Just passed - cloture motion to proceed to debate. Needed 60 votes. This is the vote R's blocked on previous non-binding measures (i.e. 'they won't even allow a debate'). This time, it passed.

#2: Cloture motion to end debate. Also needs 60. If they block this, also considered a filibuster.

#3: Vote on final passage. Needs 50. The Republicans can block getting to this if enough of them vote against #2 above.

[T]he Congressional Black Caucus Political Education and Leadership Institute plans to announce two debates in concert with Fox News, according to a source familiar with the negotiations, which have apparently been going on for weeks. …

“Both CNN and Fox have presented the Institute with two great proposals and at some point in the coming days we will be making an announcement,” she said Candice Tolliver, a consultant working with the CBC Institute on the debates, adding that the Institute’s plans are not final.

Black online activists — led by ColorOfChange.org — partnered with Robert Greenwald’s Fox Attacks to call on the CBC Institute to reject Fox as a partner for their presidential debates. A letter from Color Of Change to activists:

“Fox News is not a ‘fair and balanced’ source of information or political debate, and it has repeatedly proven itself hostile to the interests of Black Americans… Fox on-air personalities and regular guests consistently marginalize Black leaders, culture, and institutions.”

The efforts appear to have paid off. A new release from CNN says it “will partner with the Congressional Black Caucus Political Education and Leadership Institute (CBC Institute) to host a presidential debate among Democratic candidates.”

Senate conservatives end opposition to Iraq debate. Breaking a series of roadblocks imposed by conservatives, the Senate voted 89-9 just now “to begin its first formal debate on the Iraq war since Democrats took control of Congress in January.” Bob Geiger explains what comes next.

UPDATE: Meanwhile, the House is voting now on the Presidential Records Act Amendments of 2007, which overturns a Reagan-era executive order giving “current and former presidents and vice presidents broad authority to withhold presidential records or delay their release indefinitely.” Much more HERE.

"If you listen to Seder, he gets flustered and starts name-calling if somebody disagrees with him and starts to win the debate."

++++

I listen to Seder. Haven't heard what you're talking about, though. Guess I was out of the room when that happened.
