Casual Friday ... Extreme!

Today's edition of Casual Friday has been dubbed "Casual Friday Extreme!" by the Sam Seder Juggernaut. Because, we'll, we're not in the studio today. It's that casual.

So, the Drudge Report is linking to an Evening Standard story about an ancient picture of Tony Blair making an "obscene gesture." Maybe he's pretending to grab his "Wee Prime Minister." But maybe, just maybe, he's playing that sadistic game that junior-high boys tend to play. You know, the one where I make a circle with my thumb and forefinger below my waist, and if you look at it I get to punch you twice in the shoulder. Anyone? Anyone?

Measuring Democratic impact on America By JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 15 minutes ago

Two months after Democrats took control of Congress, there isn't much to show for the switch in power — despite feverish efforts to weigh in on meaty matters, such as the war in Iraq.

A Vermont park has a new name, a new board oversees the now-infamous House page program and a glitch has been fixed in minting $1 silver coins honoring Thomas Edison.

Democrats also have gotten enacted into law modest boosts in veterans' benefits, health research and college loans, perhaps their biggest achievement during their time in power. That accomplishment came on a nearly half-trillion-dollar spending bill that Republicans left uncompleted last fall, when voters decided they wanted a different party than the president's running Congress.

The face of Congress itself has been altered markedly since Democrats took over this year, with a woman in the House speaker's chair, anti-war leaders in senior posts, and a veritable glut of hearings probing everything from Iraq policy to whether the Bush administration is trying to silence climate change researchers.

But thanks to their slim margins of control, the molasses-like pace of the Senate, and a president ready to wield his ultimate weapon — the veto — to block their agenda, Democrats' wish list lacks a single check mark.

"If it requires action in both houses of Congress and a presidential signature, there are limits to how much one party's agenda can actually see the light of day," said Thomas Mann, a Brookings Institution congressional expert.

From firedoglake re the Libby trial:

We thought we might have a hearing on the meaning of whatever word the jury wanted a dictionary for today, but so far — nada. Still, in Marcy's absense it's been nice to have egregious here in the media room as backup in case I needed to be up in the courtroom (everyone knows how much I love sitting on those rock-hard benches). We've got about 45 minutes until the end of the day (jury goes home at 2pm) so we're in countdown phase for the weekend until then.

Meanwhile, via Jeralyn at TalkLeft, we find that the Wilsons have sold their story to Warner Brothers. The sport du jour here at the courthouse is casting. Matt Cooper has already publicy said that he wants Jack Black to play him (who would no doubt pick up an Oscar for the "sprawl" scene). Feel free to play blogospheric casting director in the comments below — who knows, someone Debra Zane could be picking up tips.

Plame film in works at Warner Bros.
Studio sets movie about CIA leak scandal

Warner Bros. is developing a feature on the lives of Valerie Plame and Ambassador Joseph Wilson, the married couple drawn into a D.C. firestorm.
Plame's status as a CIA agent was revealed by White House officials allegedly out to discredit her husband after he wrote a 2003 New York Times op-ed piece saying that the Bush administration had manipulated intelligence about weapons of mass destruction to justify the invasion of Iraq.

The film is a co-production between Weed Road's Akiva Goldsman and Jerry and Janet Zucker of Zucker Productions.

Jez and John Butterworth are writing the screenplay.

WB has secured the life rights of Plame and Wilson. Studio also will use Plame's memoir, "Fair Game," if the CIA permits her to publish it. Plame made a reported publishing deal in the $2.5 million range last year, and Simon & Schuster is expected to publish late this year. While it would be ironic for Plame's story to be illegally leaked by the White House, only to have another government branch deny her the right to tell it herself, the CIA has the latitude to silence Plame.

She left the agency in late 2005 and she and Wilson have filed a civil lawsuit against Vice President Dick Cheney, Karl Rove and Lewis "Scooter" Libby, the former chief of staff for Cheney who's currently on trial, defending himself against charges of perjury, obstruction of justice and lying to FBI agents who were investigating the leak of Plame's identity to journalists.

Iran might want U.S. help against al Qaeda: expert By David Morgan
Thu Mar 1, 2:48 PM ET

Iran could be interested in cooperating with the United States to combat al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan, a leading U.S. expert on Afghanistan said on Thursday.

Barnett Rubin, one-time adviser to former U.N. special representative to Afghanistan Lakhdar Brahimi, said Iranian officials have told him privately that al Qaeda poses a new threat to Afghanistan that could have implications for Iran's national security.

"They believe that al Qaeda is the number one threat to Iran, maybe after the United States," he told the Senate Armed Services Committee. Iran's ruling Muslim clerics are Shi'ite, an Islamic sect opposed by the Sunni-dominated al Qaeda and Taliban.

"They told me they had some information about it, and they would like to cooperate with the United States. But neither their government in Tehran, nor our government in Washington, had authorized the sharing of that information, which they found frustrating," Rubin added.

The committee's top Democratic and Republican senators said they would urge the State Department to consider Rubin's remarks ahead of two conferences with Iran and Syria set to begin next week in Baghdad.

"That's pretty important information," said Sen. Carl Levin (news, bio, voting record) of Michigan, the panel's Democratic chairman. "That directly relates to even the limited purpose that's been stated for meetings with Iran and Syria."

Rubin did not identify the Iranian officials he met in Kabul last November. But he said they also expressed interest in cooperating with the United States against the Taliban.

Wash. Post, LA Times yet to highlight McCain's "wasted ... lives" comment; ABC's World News and GMA also ignored

As of March 2, The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times have yet to publish articles noting that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), during an appearance on the February 28 edition of CBS' The Late Show with David Letterman in which he announced his presidential candidacy, claimed that "[w]e've wasted a lot of our most precious treasure [in Iraq], which is American lives." Media Matters for America noted that on March 1, The New York Times, The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times all ignored McCain's claim in their articles reporting his announcement on the Late Show despite previously publishing stories highlighting similar comments made by Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) to an Iowa audience on February 11. While both the Post and The New York Times had posted a separate March 1 AP report highlighting McCain's comments on their respective websites, of the three newspapers, only The New York Times published a March 2 article on McCain's claim

CNN's Costello falsely asserted that "you don't see candidate Hillary Clinton on Leno or Letterman"

http://mediamatters.org/items/200703020009

On the March 1 edition of CNN's The Situation Room, CNN contributor Carol Costello quoted political analyst Dan McGinn, CEO of The McGinn Group, saying that politicians who appear on television entertainment shows "have to be funny. You do have to be entertaining, but you can't do it in a forced way that people feel like that's really not who you are." Costello then concluded: "And that is a real challenge. That's why you don't see candidate Hillary Clinton on Leno or Letterman." In fact, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) has appeared on numerous entertainment shows as a Senate candidate, senator, and possible presidential contender, including on the August 4, 2003, edition of NBC's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the October 8, 2003, edition of Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. She appeared on ABC's The View as recently as December 20, 2006, and she also appeared on The View on May 10, 2004, and October 13, 2003. Clinton also made an appearance on NBC's The Ellen DeGeneres Show on November 21, 2005.

March 2, 2007 -- ISRAEL'S DOUBLE GAME IN SOUTHEAST ASIA: ARMING TERRORISTS WITH KHMER ROUGE WEAPONS

WMR's report yesterday on the U.S. naval buildup in Southeast Asia, particularly in Cambodia, coincides with a major Israeli intelligence and weapons smuggling operation in the region.

Israel has been a major, albeit covert, player in Southeast Asia since Israeli multi-billionaire tycoon Shaul Eisenberg began supplying weapons to Cambodia's genocidal Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s. Eisenberg, a close business partner of China's military, was also an early arms supplier to Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot. Eisenberg was active with Asia's Jewish community during World War II, not as an compatriot of the Allies but as a close intelligence and business partner of Japan's Imperial government, which was allied with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy in the Axis Alliance. Escaping Nazi-controlled Europe, Eisenberg settled in the Far East, making his primary bases of operation Japanese-occupied Shanghai and Japan itself.

Did White House Pull Nomination To Avoid Questions Over 2004 Minority Voter Suppression? »
Tim Griffin — a “37-year-old protege” of Karl Rove and the former research director of the Republican National Committee — has become the poster boy for the Bush administration’s politicization of the office of U.S. attorney.

On Feb. 15, Griffin suddenly announced that he had “made the decision not to let my name go forward to the Senate” for approval. Instead, he will serve indefinitely as an “interim” prosecutor. By avoiding Senate approval, Griffin will also avoid having to answer questions under oath about his role in a plan to supress Florida votes — primarily those of African-American servicemembers — in the 2004 election. eya T,

some more info on those fired US attorneys via Paul Blumenthal and his excellent post at the Sunlight foundation site which i learned about from reading an interview with Allison Fine.

http://www.sunlightfoundation.com/node/2225#comment

"Purged U.S. Attorney Carol Lam has been the lead prosecutor in the Randy “Duke” Cunningham case that has led to the indictments of Cunningham (also convicted and sentenced to over 8 years in prison), Brent Wilkes, Mitchell Wade, and K. Dusty Foggo.

Lam was purged immediately after she indicted Wilkes, a top government contractor with ties to many California Republicans including Appropriations Ranking Member Jerry Lewis and Presidential candidate Duncan Hunter, and Foggo, the former number three at the CIA.

TPM Muckraker has been following this case diligently and as they point out, the Iglesias revelations make the removal of Lam incredibly suspect.

Perhaps she was getting too deep; this San Diego Union-Tribune article from today notes that the case is incredibly sensitive as it could potentially reveal the identities of CIA operatives because the indictment alleges that Foggo gave the confidential information to the contractor Wilkes.

It should be noted that Wilkes was a 2004 Bush “Ranger” (he raised more than $200,000).

Another purged Attorney, Bud Cummins, U.S. Attorney from Arkansas, stated that he was pushed out to make way for a protégé of White House strategist de jour Karl Rove. The Rove protégé, Tim Griffin, was formerly an opposition research specialist at the Republican National Committee, a purely political position.

Griffin has since withdrawn his name from consideration for a full time position blaming the politicization of the process by Arkansas’ two Democratic Senators Mark Pryor and Blanche Lincoln.

He is currently the interim U.S. Attorney from Arkansas."

Teens bound over for trial in slaying of Iraq vet

DETROIT -- Three teenagers were ordered to stand trial Thursday on charges they murdered and robbed an Iraq war veteran of his tax refund.

Though a key witness disagreed with the alleged confession of the teens as to who the shooter was, 36th District Judge Donald Coleman ordered the case to trial.

Dwight Bush identified William Edward Johnson, 17, as the gunman who killed his cousin, Terron Foster Bush., as they stepped out of a check cashing store on Harper on Jan. 18.

Others have said Steven James Johnson, 15, William Johnson's brother, did the shooting.

only rural like upstate. Houses
this way and that. Farms, sandy bluffs
overlooking L.I. Sound. Narrow
rocky beaches. Pine Barrens.
Calm water. Fog.
You can see Conn.

Different from the south shore.
The south shore is mostly flat.
Set up in rectangular blocks like
the city. Farms. Bays. Wide
sandy beaches. Landscape tapers
to the rolling Atlantic.

South shore has nice beaches.

Govt. picks design for nuclear warhead By H. JOSEF HEBERT, Associated Press Writer
2 hours, 1 minute ago

The Bush administration took a major step Friday toward building a new generation of nuclear warheads, selecting a design that is being touted as safer, more secure and more easily maintained than today's arsenal.

A team of scientists from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory will proceed with the weapons design with an anticipation that the first warheads may be ready by 2012 as a replacement for Trident missiles on submarines.

The new weapons program, which has received cautious support from Congress, was immediately criticized by some nuclear nonproliferation groups as evidence the government wants to expand nuclear weapons production — not move toward eliminating the stockpile.

Critics also maintain that it sends the wrong signal around the world by pushing a new warhead — although characterized as a replacement for existing ones_ at a time the United States is trying to curtail nuclear weapons development in North Korea and Iran.

Some lawmakers agreed.

"The minute you begin to put more sophisticated warheads on the existing fleet, you are essentially creating a new nuclear weapon. And it's just a matter of time before other nation's do the same," said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (news, bio, voting record), D-Calif. "This could serve to encourage the very proliferation we are trying to prevent."

FBI Agrees to Investigate Charge That Howell School Books Are Porn

"We're talking about material that's not appropriate for minor children," Vicki Fyke said.

So Fyke and the Livingston Organization for Values in Education want some books like Toni Morrison's "The Bluest Eye" out of the classrooms at Howell High School.

The book about an 11-year-old girl's search for identity contains a scene in which she is raped by her father.

"It describes in great detail how he does it," Fyke said.

The group is also looking to keep Richard Wright's "Black Boy," Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse-Five" and "The Freedom Writers Diary" out of the curriculum. Fyke says the group has no problem keeping the books in the school library.

But after the Howell Board of Education sided against the group in its push to remove the books from the classroom, Fyke forwarded her complaints to prosecutors, alleging the teachers were, in effect, providing pornography for their students.

"If anybody else gave them this material, it's against the law," she said.

Now Fyke has received a letter from the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan in Detroit saying he's forwarded the case to the FBI for investigation.

"I received it Tuesday," she said.

A spokeswoman for the FBI in Detroit told us the office has received the complaint.

"We are reviewing it," the spokeswoman said.

But the whole process surrounding the book is perplexing to at least one educational expert.

"I still can't believe this is happening," Fred Barton said.

Harassment of women down, dowry deaths up

The number of cases of harassment of women declined substantially in the city in 2006, compared with the previous two years (2004 and 2005), but there was a marginal rise in dowry deaths reported in the city, police statistics show.

This comes against a backdrop of reports that crime against women has been rising steadily and women's organisations clamouring for stricter implementation of laws to protect women.

The city police say they have done much in the last nine months to help bring down crimes against women, particularly younger women.

Chennai police sources told the The Hindu on Thursday that the number of cases registered under the TN Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act had dropped below 100 in 2006. In 2005 the number was slightly more than 200.

The total number of offences against women registered in 2006 stood at around 450 in the city, while it was close to 600 in 2005. A sustained drive against eve-teasers at bus stops, schools, colleges and other public places had helped the police bring down the number of cases, the officials said.

Buy a Yellow Ribbon Magnet....Cheap!
Right after the war started in Iraq you couldn't pass a car without a Yellow Ribbon Magnet that said "Support the Troops". Lately I haven't seen as many. Could it be that the war in Iraq has become unpopular. I don't think it means we don't support our troops.

From Financial Times:

Yellow ribbons dwindle with war support
By Andrew Ward in Atlanta

Published: March 2 2007 22:18 | Last updated: March 2 2007 23:02

For three years after the invasion of Iraq, it was difficult to drive more than a few miles through middle America without seeing a car displaying a magnetic yellow ribbon.

The magnets, bearing the slogan “Support Our Troops”, became a symbol of patriotism for millions of US motorists.

But as support for the war fades, demand for yellow ribbons has collapsed.

Coulter reference to Edwards as "faggot" gives rise to questions for media

http://mediamatters.org/items/200703030002

In a March 2 speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), right-wing pundit Ann Coulter said she "can't really talk about" Democratic presidential candidate and former Sen. John Edwards (NC) because "you have to go into rehab if you use the word 'faggot.' " The CPAC audience applauded her comment. Coulter's comments, which aired on CSPAN, were also documented by the weblog Think Progress. It was not the first time Coulter has smeared a prominent Democrat with a homophobic epithet, and it is not the first time that Coulter has ridiculed Edwards. Will the media call on Republican presidential hopefuls attending the CPAC conference to denounce her smear?

***

I think the best response to Coulter is : "Well, I guess you oughta know, Ann...."

Anonymous said...

Another excerpt from Ann Coulter [talking about Mitt Romney]:

Coulter also touted Romney's position on gay rights, saying:

COULTER: And of course, if you're working for a Republican candidate, you'll meet some nice heterosexual guys. By the way, before I let that slide, I do want to point out one thing that has been driving me crazy with the media, how they keep describing Mitt Romney's position as being "pro-gays, and that's going to upset right-wingers." Well, you know, screw you, I'm not anti-gay. We're against gay marriage. I don't want gays to be discriminated against. I mean, I think we have, in addition to blacks, I don't know why all gays aren't Republicans. I think we have the pro-gay position, which is anti-crime and for tax cuts. Gays make a lot of money, and they're victims of crime. I mean, the way -- no, they are. They should be with us. But the media portrays us. If they could get away with it, they would start saying, you know, "Mitt Romney, he's pro-civil rights, and that's going to upset conservatives." No. OK. Sorry, go ahead.

Matthews claimed that Southerners "know Rudy [Giuliani] was a hero"

http://mediamatters.org/items/200703030004

On the March 1 edition of MSNBC's Hardball, host Chris Matthews again touted former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) as a "hero," saying that Southerners "can't spell his name necessarily, but they know Rudy was a hero." Matthews also praised Giuliani as "the one tough cop who was standing on the beat when we got hit last time and stood up and took it." Later in the program, Matthews again noted that Sen. Barack Obama's (D-IL) "middle name is Hussein." As Media Matters has noted, Matthews was apparently the first to publicly mention Obama's middle name as politically significant, doing so on the November 7, 2006, edition of Hardball.

Matthews and other media figures have demonstrated a pattern of uncritically hyping Giuliani as a hero while ignoring allegations that Giuliani was responsible for terrorism-related failures before, during, and after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, as Media Matters for America has documented.

"[B]arbarian" O'Reilly: "[I]n a lot of places, women have formed cabals to terrorize the men"

http://mediamatters.org/items/200703030001

On the February 28 edition of his nationally syndicated radio show, Bill O'Reilly told co-host Lis Wiehl that "women were treated better than men" at ABC News and CBS News because "[t]hey had a little cabal; and they intimidated the men in the organization and said, 'If you look at me cross-eyed, I'm gonna bring you up to Human Resources and destroy your life.' " O'Reilly added that "every man in the place was terrified of them." He later stated that, "in a lot of places, women have formed cabals to terrorize the men because they take advantage of, 'Oh, we're downtrodden. You're kicking us in the teeth.' " He then discussed how, in every country he'd "ever been to, women are treated worse [than] in the United States. ... Guys are gonna put their hands on you in that society in Italy, in Spain." O'Reilly concluded: "So, all of this whining about American women -- 'We don't have this; we don't have that' -- to me, I'm not real sympathetic. But I am a barbarian." As Media Matters for America has noted, O'Reilly has a history of making derogatory remarks to Wiehl, such as asking her to protest outside CBS studios in a bikini. In 2004, he settled a sexual harassment lawsuit brought by his former producer, Andrea Mackris; and, Fox News Network also reportedly settled a sex discrimination lawsuit in 2006.

Anonymous said...

Additionally, O'Reilly argued that employers should not be required to cover female employees' birth control prescriptions even if the employer covers male employees' Viagra prescriptions because birth control pills are not used to treat "a medical condition." O'Reilly contended: "There's still a distinction between a physical condition that doesn't allow you to perform. ... [T]here's a difference between a medical condition that debilitates a guy in this area and you and women having birth control. Buy your own. I don't wanna pay for your birth control. I'm sorry, I don't." In response to Wiehl's objections, O'Reilly mocked: "Give me, take me, buy me, I want. I -- I want. I want."

In fact, oral contraceptives, in addition for use in preventing pregnancy, are also used to treat numerous medical conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, adenomyosis, irregular menstrual cycles, acne, and severe menstrual cramping, among other conditions.

This sucker's gonna die a horribly slow painful death.

And the beauty is, we won't have to lift a finger.

O'reilly has a wife and child. A girl child.

As Media Matters noted, O'Reilly has also falsely claimed that it "is never the case" that a "mother's life is in danger" during the course of a pregnancy, when, in fact, there are several potential pregnancy complications that can threaten the life of a pregnant woman.

Anonymous said...

Later in the February 28 show, discussing workplace discrimination, a female caller said she was "angry with" O'Reilly because she said she had "no idea" that he was "so sexist and so discriminatory." O'Reilly dismissed the caller's concerns as coming from "an angry woman." When Wiehl offered to send the caller a copy of her new book, The 51% Minority: How Women Still Are Not Equal and What You Can do About it (Random House, February 2007), O'Reilly told Wiehl, "But you just make her more angry," and joked that because of Wiehl's book, "[s]ome guy's gonna get popped." O'Reilly later suggested that women were mentally and physically unfit for combat: "If it were me, I wouldn't have any women in combat. That's how much of a barbarian I am. I wouldn't put any of them on the frontline for physical reasons, all right -- and for camaraderie and a lot of other different reasons: psychological, emotional, all kinds of stuff."

Anonymous said...

In October 2004, O'Reilly settled a sexual harassment suit brought by Mackris. As The Washington Post reported, the lawsuit "charged that he spoke to Mackris about sexual fantasies, masturbation and vibrators while sometimes seeming to pleasure himself." According to the Post, "O'Reilly and his attorney, Ronald Green, never denied that the Fox commentator had used such language, but said he never broke the law and questioned whether Mackris was truly offended or was taking words and phrases out of context." The lawsuit was settled for an undisclosed amount of money.

Anonymous said...

In August 2006, Fox News Network reportedly settled a U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission [EEOC] sex discrimination suit. According to Bloomberg News, the lawsuit, which was brought by four female employees, alleged that "Fox News Vice President Joe Chillemi used obscene terms to describe women and their body parts." Bloomberg also noted that the "EEOC complaint said Fox News failed to enforce the 1964 Civil Rights Act by retaliating against one of the four employees, Kim Weiler, who complained that women were assigned to freelance positions with fewer benefits, less advancement potential and lower job security than others."

Anonymous said...

Further, as Media Matters has noted, O'Reilly has previously made degrading comments to Wiehl. For instance, on the November 3, 2005, broadcast of his radio show, O'Reilly called for "a full-body search" on Wiehl. On October 26, 2005, O'Reilly claimed that he was "outraged" about a recent CBS poll on border control and asked Wiehl to protest the network while wearing a bikini. When she resisted, he asked her: "Don't you love your country?" and "Don't you want fairness in the media?" In another instance on June 21, 2004, O'Reilly referred to Wiehl as "eye candy" and told her, "You're here because you're good-looking, so I got somebody to look over."

Savage, on the day CAA reportedly dumped him following homophobic remarks: "Mike shall return"

http://mediamatters.org/items/200703020012

On March 1, Hollywood's Creative Artists Agency (CAA) reportedly dropped conservative radio host Michael Savage two days after announcing that he had been signed as a client. CAA's reported decision followed Savage's comments -- documented by Media Matters for America -- attacking singer Melissa Etheridge, who thanked her wife at the Academy Awards, and asserting that married gay couples' raising of children amounts to "child abuse" and "makes me want to puke." Later on March 1, on his nationally syndicated radio, Savage did not directly address CAA's reported decision, but he did speak to "[t]hose of you who think I'm your enemy" and those "who are spending all your days and nights attacking Michael Savage." Savage went on to say: "You're mentally ill, and you need help. You need more help than you can imagine. ... I know you're mentally ill. I know that, and you can't help yourself. The mentally ill cannot heal themselves."

In the same broadcast, Savage said: "How [liberals] could have such hatred in their hearts for people like myself ... how they will take the side of the Islamic extremists over the president and over the troops, how they will take the side of the enemy in virtually every interchange could only be answered with one statement: liberalism is a mental disorder, and I don't have the cure for it." He added, "But I certainly will never relent in my desire to awaken America. With God's will -- and your listenership -- Mike shall return."

March 1, 2007 -- BUSH AND CHENEY, WHO AVOIDED THE VIETNAM WAR, ARE PREPARING FOR A NEW U.S. MILITARY PRESENCE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA: AFTER THE MIDDLE EAST DISASTER, GET READY FOR INDOCHINA WAR II.

While in Southeast Asia, this editor looked into rumors that the Bush/Cheney administration has initiated a major military move into Southeast Asia to secure for itself large oil deposits discovered in the waters of the Gulf of Thailand. The U.S. military push into the region is centered on the Cambodian coast, particularly around Sihanoukville.

With three countries -- Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam -- vying for the off-shore oil booty in seas where maritime borders are contested, the Bush/Cheney cartel hopes to achieve a dominant position to exploit the oil reserves for their oil industry friends and backers.

The recent visit of the U.S. Navy Seventh Fleet's USS Gary (FFG 51) to the Ream Naval Base near Sihanoukville on February 9, 2007 was billed as the first visit of a U.S. Navy ship in 30 years. What the Navy and media did not report was that the last U.S. Navy ships to "visit" Cambodia were those in 1975 that pulverized the Cambodian coast in response to the capture of the SS Mayaguez by Khmer Rouge forces.

The visit of the Gary to Ream coincided with the beginning of light building construction by the U.S. Navy at the base to accommodate a greater U.S. naval presence. Photos taken of the Ream Naval Base by WMR show the construction of at least one barracks on the base.

Anonymous said...

In addition, between 15 and 18 U.S. National Security Agency/Central Security Service signals intelligence (SIGINT) personnel have arrived at Ream to establish an off-shore SIGINT station on one of the Cambodian islands in the Gulf of Thailand. According to a New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) source in Cambodia, the island chosen to host the new U.S. intelligence base is Koh Tang, a location with a prime intelligence-gathering vantage point in the disputed waters of the Gulf of Thailand. Assigned to the nascent NSA contingent are Thai, Khmer, and Vietnamese linguists.

Anonymous said...

Ironically, the new U.S. naval presence in Cambodia is in the very same area that saw intense fighting between the U.S. Navy and Marines and Khmer Rouge forces that captured the U.S. "container ship", the Mayaguez, in 1975. The 39-man crew of the Mayaguez was briefly imprisoned by the Cambodians on Koh Tang, the suspected site of the new U.S. spy base. Although the Gerald Ford administration contended the Mayaguez was an unarmed merchant ship, it was under contract to the military and may have been spying on oil exploration operations in the Gulf of Thailand near the Wai Islands, claimed by Cambodia. The Cambodians were in the process of releasing the Mayaguez crew when Ford ordered U.S. bombing of the port and airfield of Sihanoukville. Forty-one American military personnel died in the needless attack on Cambodia, most from an accidental explosion. The Mayaguez crew was picked up by the Navy from a Cambodian fishing boat.

Anonymous said...

With the U.S. support for the September 16, 2006 military coup in Thailand that overthrew that nation's democratically-elected government becoming clear (U.S. ambassador to Thailand Ralph Boyce now sports a yellow tie, a show of support for the royalist-backed coup -- yellow being the color of the monarchy), there is speculation that the U.S. will beef up a presence at Thai bases that were once important during the Vietnam War. This includes the base at Utapao, Thailand, a one-time P3-Orion naval reconnaissance aircraft base and US Air Force base used to attack Cambodia over the Mayaguez incident. Since Thailand was never consulted on the use of Utapao in the attack on Cambodia, Thailand ordered the base vacated by the Americans. The Thais never believed the Mayaguez was an innocent merchant vessel but had somehow provoked the Cambodians to seize it in Cambodian territorial waters.

The Edwards campaign reacts to Coulter (from my email box):

Dear Friend,

Did you hear about Anne Coulter's speech this afternoon attacking John? A friend just forwarded me the video and it's one of the worst moments in American politics I've seen.

I can't bring myself to even repeat her comments. Her shameless display of bigotry is so outrageous you actually have to see for yourself to believe it.

This is just a taste of the filth that the right-wing machine is gearing up to throw at us. And now that it's begun, we have a choice: Do we sit back, or do we fight back?

I say we fight. Help us raise $100,000 in "Coulter Cash" this week to show every would-be Republican mouthpiece that their bigoted attacks will not intimidate this campaign. I just threw in 100 bucks. Will you join me? Just click here.

Coulter's attack was no accident. It happened on national television at one of the year's biggest conservative conferences. Dick Cheney and most of the Republican candidates were in the audience. She was even introduced by Mitt Romney.

John was singled out for a personal attack because the Republican establishment knows he poses the greatest threat to their power. Since they have nothing real to use against him, Coulter's resorting to the classic right-wing strategy of riling up hate to smear a progressive champion. And the Republican attack dogs will keep playing this despicable trick as long as they think it works.

But this time, you and I can change the game.

If we can raise $100,000 in "Coulter Cash" this week, we can show that bigotry will only backfire on those who use it. John is not the first progressive leader to face this kind of slime, but together, we can make sure he is one of the last.

Tonight, I've put in 100 bucks of "Coulter Cash" to get us started. Can you match me, or chip in whatever you can afford? Just click here:

From their wiki entry:

The Beasts of Bourbon's music has often been compared to that of a rougher Rolling Stones (whose 'Cocksucker Blues' they covered), The Gun Club (who they played with and who some Beasts filled in for) and The Birthday Party. In Germany, the band were described as 'Muddy Waters on crack'. Their music is a tough amalgam of country music, blues, rock and roll and punk parsed through the garage sound of The Stooges and the drunken mayhem of Australian pub rock. It often touches on themes of depravity, morbidity, despair, drug abuse and violence.

Beginnings

The group were initially thrown together by vocalist Tex Perkins to fulfill a booking his previous band, Tex Deadly and the Dum-Dums, could no longer make. The band began playing together in small venues in Sydney. The initial version of the group included Spencer P. Jones of The Johnnys, Boris Sudjovic and Kim Salmon of The Scientists and James Baker of The Hoodoo Gurus. Recruited in large part because they were often found in the Southern Cross, an inner-city Sydney bar, these members form what is considered by some to be the 'classic' line-up. This lineup was featured on the band's first album, The Axeman's Jazz, recorded in 1984 in a single afternoon for one hundred dollars by Tony Cohen. The album was an excursion into deranged Gothic country and western, with a strong sense of irony and irreverence toward country music's clichés. A cover of "Psycho" was a hit on alternative radio. Although the album became an underground success, the band continued, for the time being, to be just a side project for its members until 1988.

their new stuff is too polished...

they've kept the swamp guitar

but abandoned their trashy sound

Waiting for Cicero said...

Looks like Axeman's Jazz was probably their best work, but I' be interested to see what it evolved into.

I too can correct typo's.

air-ono said...

//what it evolved into//

so i'll stick to the time capsule of the axeman's jazz

Yeah, ono. Love that song, had forgotten about it for a while. Love re-finding good music. Almost as much as I like re-finding a good book.

Oh, I see. Everybody brb's on me after the skynyrd. Point taken.

this first, though...brilliant move.

Rice Picks Neo-Con Champion of Iraq War as Counselor

In a move that has surprised many foreign policy analysts here, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has appointed a prominent neo-conservative hawk and leading champion of the Iraq war to the post of State Department Counselor. Eliot A. Cohen, who teaches military history at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies here and has also served on the Pentagon's Defense Policy Board since 2001, will take up the position next month that was left vacant late last year by Rice's long-time confidant and "realist" thinker, Philip Zelikow. A close friend and protege of former Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz and advisory board member of the American Enterprise Institute, Cohen most recently led the harsh neo-conservative attack on the bipartisan Iraq Study Group, co-chaired by former Secretary of State James Baker and former Democratic Rep. Lee Hamilton.
