Thursday: Hi, Senator

We welcome a real, genuine U.S. Senator to the show today, in the form of the great Russ Feingold, Democrat from Wisconsin. We'll ask him if he's bummed that he's not the father of Anna Nicole's baby. But we're not stopping with Senator Feingold, we've got an action packed show for you today. We'll have blogger Atrios, John Amato from Crooks and Liars, Katrina vanden Heuvel from The Nation, and "Senator" Katherine Harris. What a freakin' show! Get down on your hands and knees and thank the heavens for this one. And the next one. Cause that's all there is left.

Librarian warns against govt. secrecy By ANDREW MIGA, Associated Press Writer
Wed Apr 11, 5:55 PM ET

A librarian who fended off an FBI demand for computer records on patrons said Wednesday the government's secret anti-terrorism investigations strip away personal freedoms.

"Terrorists win when the fear of them induces us to destroy the rights that make us free," said George Christian, executive director of Library Connection Inc., a consortium of 27 libraries in the Hartford, Conn., area that share an automated library system.

In prepared testimony for a Senate panel, Christian said his experience "should raise a big patriotic American flag of caution" about the strain that the government's pursuit of would-be terrorists puts on civil liberties.

The government uses the USA Patriot Act and other laws to learn, without proper judicial oversight or any after-the-fact review, what citizens are researching in libraries, Christian said.

A recent report by the Justice Department's inspector general that found 48 violations of law or rules in the FBI's use of documents, known as national security letters, during 2003 through 2005. Some congressional critics want to tighten legal safeguards on the letters.

"'Trust us' doesn't cut it when it comes to the government's power to obtain Americans' sensitive business records without a court order and without any suspicion that they are tied to terrorism or espionage," said Sen. Russ Feingold (news, bio, voting record), D-Wis., the chairman of the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on the Constitution.

Under the Patriot Act, the FBI can use the letters to acquire telephone, e-mail, travel and financial records without a judge's approval. Letter recipients are not allowed to disclose their involvement in a request.

The Associated Press today reports on rumors that Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM), one of two members of Congress in possible ethical trouble for allegedly contacting the U.S. Attorney in New Mexico to discuss grand jury proceedings, may retire. But the senator's staff pointed to the ample money he has raised as evidence he won't quit.

"Down the road, as the election comes — will questions about his health or the (U.S. attorney) story hurt his campaign?" asked University of New Mexico political science professor Lonna Atkeson in an interview with the AP.

At a recent banquet in Albuquerque, the New Mexico Republican apparently "called recent weeks 'hell' like he had never experienced his entire career."

Since an ethics complaint was filed against the senator in February for calling U.S. Attorney David Iglesias prior to the November 2006 elections and inquiring about the status of grand jury proceedings in a political fraud case, Democrats have seen an opportunity to defeat the longtime Republican senator, comparing him with Sen. Conrad Burns (R-MT), who was linked into the Abramoff scandal.

As long as NO-Bid Contracts are funneling US TAX Dollars back towards these WAR Profiteers, this WAR will continue. When the clock finally runs out on Iraq, so will these Gov contractors. Well, you are human beings. Resourceful. Form a little society of your own. And, hang out with them. Get a gang.

But anyway, one thing I found out was that we need extended families. We need gangs.

And, of course, if they're tribes and clans and so forth have been dispersed by the industrial revolution by people looking for work wherever they can find it. And a nuclear family, a man, a woman and kids and a dog and cat is no survival scheme at all. Horribly vulnerable.

So yes, I tell people to formulate a little gang. And, you know, you love each other.

As for Imus - I could really care less what happens to him. He's got his millions and a wife and son to comfort him. I have been dismayed, however, by the reaction to this mess from people such as Paul Begala - people I used to actually work with and whom I have liked and admired as colleagues and I thought friends. For Begala to rush to Imus' defense after the disgusting things he said about the Rutgers students and knowing that incident was just the latest in a long line has seriously disappointed me. To call Imus getting fired the "death penalty??!" People get fired all the time, and as the one caller mentioned, in any other workplace setting, one would get fired for the first such incident as Imus engaged in.

I thought Paul was better than that. That he would understand the damage to the young girls rather than reflexively identify with another rich white male. If Paul wants to give Imus redemption, he can - Imus can redeem himself by giving up his day job and using the rest of his few remaining years to helping young black women gain an education and a profession.

Ex-White House official sparks protest at UMass

Former White House Chief of Staff Andrew H. Card Jr. came to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst to discuss the country's future political landscape, but students and others switched the focus to Iraq.

Card gave the inaugural lecture in the University's "Talking Politics" series sponsored by the UMass Civic Initiative run by the Donahue Institute and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The lecture was in the Student Union Ballroom and attended by students and faculty and others.

Several protesters arrived for the event carrying signs including some that read, "Card = Criminal" or "Lies."

Right Wing Uses Cropped Photo To Downplay Size Of Iraq Protest

After thousands of demonstrators gathered in Najaf, Iraq, yesterday to protest the U.S. occupation, the Bush administration was quick to downplay the size of the gathering. State Department official David Satterfield said, “I think the small size of those demonstrations is an indication of the limited appeal of Muqtada al-Sadr’s rhetoric at this moment.”

The right-wing has quickly echoed these talking points, circulating a U.S. Army aerial photo of the protest to support the military’s low-ball estimate that only 5,000-7,000 attended the rally. Gateway Pundit claims “proof” that “Al Sadr and the mainstream media missed the mark on this one” by claiming that the “aerial shot from Najaf, Iraq yesterday shows a protest of 5,000-7,000 Al-Sadr devotees.”

Instapundit links to Gateway Pundit and calls the protest “a weak turnout.” RedState uses the photo to claim the “outcome was underwhelming.” Weekly Standard downplays the turnout and says it is evidence that “the Coalition has regained the initiative.”

Here’s their photographic “proof“:

Waiting for Cicero,
Good morning!

Any speeches or protesting planned for today, Cicero the orator?

Waiting for Cicero said...

Cicero will be calling Lionel later tonight, Vox. Don't know if I'll get through, but I'd like to ask him a few questions.

Protest will be tomorrow, when Rove is in town.

Chomsky ignites ire in Newton

MIT linguist and political firebrand Noam Chomsky told Newton South High School students it’s been decades since he triggered the type of angry protest that greeted him yesterday.

But it didn’t stop the noted author and anti-war activist from fielding questions from students and taking shots at the Bush administration.

“It tells you something about the community. It doesn’t tell you anything about me,” he said of the protesters.

I wholeheartedly agree with your dismissal of Don Imus. The young women of Rutgers basketball team are doing all the positive things--getting their education and participating in a team building activity--and are successful at it and providing a model for anyone to emulate. I am sure for these American girls, particularly those of African heritage, it is not the first time they have faced and heard demeaning comments; but I am sure that after achieving what others only dream about (playing the NCAA championship game), they did not expect it after doing so. The “ceiling” came crashing down at a disappointing moment (coming so close to winning it all) when they should be consoled. Instead of praising them for the skill and effort, both on and off the court, that put them in that arena, they were called a racist, derogatory slur. Firing Imus is the least that could be done.

I usually agree with Sam 99% of the time.

We're all gonna miss the show.

How do you IM him?

Sam, Please think about a webcast show. Remenber when Air America first started? We were there, we listened. Thank you for all the time we had you.

Marilynn

P. S. I was so happy to see you have a beautiful wife. I was a little afraid for your baby. Seriously She is beautiful and smart. You are lucky.

The Sunday panel thing would be cool; especially with the SammyCam.

Y'gonna wear a bowtie again?

when a rapper says ho, he is usually referring to an actual ho, not these successful young women. That is the difference.

I'm working on a line for imus, for my media brigade song...what rhymes with imus....hmmmmm

Sam,

Karl Rove is laughing his arse off that you-all are talking non-stop about Imus, while the Bushies are burning the constitution, escalating the Iraq fiasco, etc. Imus is a diversion, like Anna Nicole. PLEASE get back to the serious political issues.

Thanks,

M.K. from Michigan
