Thursday: Hi, Senator

We welcome a real, genuine U.S. Senator to the show today, in the form of the great Russ Feingold, Democrat from Wisconsin. We'll ask him if he's bummed that he's not the father of Anna Nicole's baby. But we're not stopping with Senator Feingold, we've got an action packed show for you today. We'll have blogger Atrios, John Amato from Crooks and Liars, Katrina vanden Heuvel from The Nation, and "Senator" Katherine Harris. What a freakin' show! Get down on your hands and knees and thank the heavens for this one. And the next one. Cause that's all there is left.

Much love and best wishes for the new show on Sundays.

BRITISH CRIMINAL COLD WAR GERM EXPERIMENTS

By T Stokes

In the early 1970s the English Channel was the busiest area for shipping traffic in the world, and would often be used by various nations for testing defense initiatives. One night we had a senior British intelligence officer on board who waited until the wind was blowing toward the British coast, then got the lids off three large metal containers so the fine dust would be taken across to shore. Suddenly, excitement broke loose as we saw some strange experimental craft, these were very low in the water, camouflaged and fast and almost invisible to the naked eye, but silent. We watched and about 10 in all went past some distance away at high speed.

From our own analysis, we thought these were low troop carriers where men would crawl in and lay down side by side with about 30-40 men to a craft. The worry was this may be Soviet exercise, but subsequently we were told it was that of an E.E.C member country. Using this as a diversion we rummaged the papers of the intelligence man, who would spy on us, and in turning the tables discovered that this was a Porton Down chemical gas experiment on its own people.

McCain campaign to cut back on staff

WASHINGTON - Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record)'s troubled presidential campaign is eliminating some non-senior staff positions and cutting some consultants' contracts.

...

The campaign dismissed the notion of mass layoffs, but it wouldn't quantify exactly how many jobs are affected. Some positions won't be filled as planned in May, and some consultants will be paid on a per-project basis.

Bill Maher: John McCain Fucked by the Republican Fantasy World

John McCain's not an idiot. I'm sure he knows that it's not safe in Baghdad, but he has to pretend that it's safe in Baghdad because that's what the GOP base wants to hear.

We keep hearing that a significant majority of Americans think the war was a mistake and want the troops out.

And that's true. But those figures are an average of all voters and are pretty deceptive, because most Republicans are still gung-ho about the war. In fact, two-thirds of likely GOP primary voters support what Bush is doing in Iraq. They support the surge. They've swallowed so much Kool-Aid that any change in their diet would kill them.

What this means is, every GOP candidate has to say the war is going great, whether they believe it or not, at least until the primaries are over. Giuliani's very rah-rah about the war, Romney doesn't like to talk about it, but then he has his own religious jihad to worry about. But none of them will be able to say anything other than "the surge is working," or "if we leave now things will get really bad" because the base won't stand for it. And this means they're going to look increasingly ridiculous and out-of-touch as the months go on. And there's no way they can "move to the middle" once the primary is over on an issue like this.

I was ever so grateful when Sam's show replaced the timeslot occupied by Jerry Springer (Air America's version of Joe Liebermann!) and am disappointed to see him meet a similar fate (save for the Sunday Show). What did the new ownership find wanting about Sam's presentation? I'm glad the network was saved from bankruptcy by Mr. Green but the move has a creepy Corporate feeling about it. Best of luck, Sam!

>Unemployment jumped to 324,000 last month. Per msnbc

This is hogwash. It only measures how many people are unemployed because their benefits ran out. It does not account for--

Those whose benefits ran out before they found new jobs

Those (usually women) who have gone back to being full time moms/dads because they were unable to find work

Those who have gone back to school with the hope of "learning new skills" and the assurance of more debt

Those who are underemployed, who have had to take lower paying or part time jobs

Those who had no choice but to work illegally often in dangerous or unhealthy conditions.

The real unemployment rate is probably closer to 20%

Air America Idiots

The incompetent idiotic management that drove Air America into bankruptcy have now been replaced by other incompetent idiotic management.

Tomorrow is the last show of the best program on radio, The Sam Seder Show. Sam is an incredibly funny and informative host, who actually did the impossible for me, which is make a radio show a must-listen. My mind-numbingly boring job was made a little less agonizing from 9-12, listening to his program. Air America, at least on XM radio, is now incredibly boring and not worth the money to renew my subscription anymore.

Air America has grown tremendously, so its hard to fathom why they've been such a financial failure. I would have to assume its just incompetent management, which dumping Sam Seder will only exacerbate.

....also, his book is great.

Just sent this to Keith Olbermann's show for what it's worth:

Dear Mr. Olbermann,

We found it terribly ironic that you had Sam Seder on your show tonight to discuss the firing of Don Imus. Did you have any idea that Sam Seder just lost his own radio program, "The Sam Seder Show?" His last show is tomorrow (4/13/2007.) Despite good radio and web streaming ratings and not losing any affiliates, the new management at Air America has decided to "go in a new direction." Again.
We are devastated that he's being dumped.
Perhaps it was a conscious decision on either your part or Sam's to not bring up his own dismissal for whatever reasons.
If that's not the case, it sure would have been nice for you to mention that Sam's show was also ending.
You clearly appreciate and value progressive and intelligent voices like Sam Seder and Rachel Maddow. We hope you continue to have Sam Seder on your show in the future.
Thanks very much,
Doris Maat and Robert Milgrom

Cavuto: "[A] ho is a ho, right?"

http://mediamatters.org/items/200704130001

On the April 12 edition of Fox News' Your World, while discussing the controversy surrounding radio host Don Imus' recent remarks, host Neil Cavuto asked rapper M-1, one half of the group Dead Prez, "[A] ho is a ho, right?" Cavuto added: "So, if Imus uses the expression and then you use the expression, you've both said 'ho.' " He later said, "So, there's nothing wrong with Imus saying it, right?" On the April 4 edition of Imus in the Morning, which was then produced by CBS Radio and simulcast on MSNBC, Imus referred to the Rutgers University women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos."

Cavuto also called Imus' remark "an errant comment" and "a badly phrased comment." However, as Media Matters for America has noted, Imus' comment was part of a pattern of racial smears on Imus in the Morning.

From the April 12 edition of Fox News' Your World with Neil Cavuto:

CAVUTO: M-1, I know that this is not your parent company, but NBC Universal owns Interscope Records, which has, under its employ, a lot of rap artists who routinely say stuff like you've just said and worse. And, NBC is OK with that, not OK with Don Imus making an errant comment. Do you find that, just as an artist, hypocritical?

M-1: No, I don't find it hypocritical mainly because of our relationship to the system -- our relationship with our oppressor. Once again, with personal responsibility taken at hand here, we're talking about rappers who are coerced to say things other than what the reality of our community is and Mr. Imus, who obviously has said sentiments that come from his personal beliefs. I think you are comparing apples and oranges here even when you bring the rap community into the question. And once --

CAVUTO: No, you know, M-1, I don't think I am. I mean, a ho is a ho, right? So, if Imus uses the expression and then you use the expression, you've both said "ho."

M-1: Well, no, I don't --

CAVUTO: Well, you've both said it. So, now, you're saying --

M-1: No, I don't use "ho."

CAVUTO: All right, so --

M-1: I don't say "ho." And that's my point exactly. And even the word "ho" existed way before 1976, when rap began. "Ho" is a relationship between the pimp and the pimper, the pimpee, if it may. And so --

CAVUTO: So, there's nothing wrong with Imus saying it, right?

M-1: Well, of course --

CAVUTO: And there's nothing wrong then with rappers -- unlike yourself -- saying it, right?

M-1: Well, of course there's something wrong with both of those relationships. However, what governs that relationship is the historical relationship of oppression between black people and our white oppressors in this country, and that's not a racist statement, that's the reality that we live in.

CAVUTO: But Don Imus wasn't oppressing you or anyone else. He made a mistaken -- maybe a badly phrased comment. He's lost a job on the air as a result of it. You can continue to make pretty, you know, outlandish comments for art, whatever you want to call it. It just doesn't seem right. Does it seem right to you?

Savage called Media Matters "a gay smear sheet," CEO David Brock "a psychopath"

http://mediamatters.org/items/200704120012

On the April 11 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Michael Savage referred to Media Matters for America as "a gay smear sheet" and called Media Matters President and CEO David Brock "a psychopath in my opinion, who hates me." Savage read from an April 14, 2006, Media Matters item, which noted that Savage called the woman who alleged she was raped by Duke University lacrosse team members a "Durham dirtbag" and a "dirty, verminous black stripper," and that he also said, "This is the radical, feminist, lesbian agenda being acted out on our campuses in a witch-hunt manner against these white boys, very much like the socialist communist agenda being acted out on the American stage by the extras called the illegal aliens." After reading his previous comments, Savage stated: "That's me. I am proud to tell you I agree with every word that I said a year ago." Savage claimed that Media Matters "ought to apologize to me" -- presumably because of the April 11 decision to drop the sexual assault charges in the Duke case.

I think it was great that CAA refused to represent Savage (aka Weiner) after his remarks.

This guy is a true psychotic.

Apparently defending Imus, Dietl hammered at Obama's middle name

http://mediamatters.org/items/200704130004

On the April 12 edition of Fox News' The Big Story with John Gibson, Richard "Bo" Dietl, a private investigator and former New York City Police Department detective, repeatedly referred to Sen. Barack Obama's (D-IL) middle name while discussing controversial comments by Don Imus on the April 4 edition of Imus in the Morning. Referring to Obama's call for Imus to be fired, Dietl, who was a regular guest on Imus' program, stated: "Obama Hussein. Barack Obama -- what's that guy's name? The three names? The full name?" Fox News business correspondent Rebecca Gomez answered, "Oh, I'm not even sure," and Dietl said: "Hussein. Hussein's his middle name."

Ajata said...

It's not just Imus

http://mediamatters.org/items/200704120010

On April 11, NBC News announced that it was dropping MSNBC's simulcast of Imus in the Morning in the wake of the controversy that erupted over host Don Imus' reference to the Rutgers University women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos." The following day, CBS president and CEO Leslie Moonves announced that CBS -- which owns both the radio station that broadcast Imus' program and Westwood One, which syndicated the program -- has fired Imus and would cease broadcasting his radio show. But as Media Matters for America has extensively documented, bigotry and hate speech targeting, among other characteristics, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, and ethnicity continue to permeate the airwaves through personalities such as Glenn Beck, Neal Boortz, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Michael Savage, Michael Smerconish, and John Gibson.

catharine,

I don't have a dog in this fight. I am just an observer.

Recently I spoke to a friend my thoughts on the fallout that might occur as a result of the Imus cock-up.

I cited the brief Limbaugh football commentating career and Jimmy the Greek's ill-received comments among others as past examples.

I wonder if the current Joe Pyne wannabee hate speakers and Shock Jocks will be in the cross-hairs?

If so, it couldn't happen to a not-very-much-nicer bunch of parasites.

SNL skits and satire and sarcasm are one thing. One-shtick, overpaid and overrated, non-contributors to the common good are something else.

I am not nor have been an Imus fan (nor a Stern fan), though I find them both to be relatively harmless.

Limbaugh and his ilk are different. They claim to be political analysts until pressed, when they claim to be "entertainers".

They cannot be both. SNL and other satire venues never claim to be speakers of truth.

Limbaugh does. His genre does.

I don't know enough about Imus and Stern to say, absolutely, that they don't claim to be anything more than Morning Zoo schlock jocks. I only know that Limbaugh and his ilk DO claim to be offering more than mere entertainment.

I think that the universe must have something else in store for Limbaugh...

Who am I to make the final judgment? Universal justice is more ... "just".. than the justice that we humans usually have in mind.

interesting that all these people, including Imus will have to wrestle with the "why me?"... I, Imus, am not such a bad guy... as he kept saying over and over ...

yes, Imus... you actually did some pretty bad things... some day you will have to own up to them ... if only to yourself... and it will never be acceptable to simply say.... "but that other guy is worse...."

White House says it will not turn over RNC emails. The Politico reports:

White House Counsel Fred Fielding, in a letter today, told Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) and Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), chairmen of the House and Senate Judiciary committees, that the White House has not budged in its refusal to allow the panels to question several White House aides, including Karl Rove, about what they know regarding the firing of eight U.S. Attorneys, moving the two sides closer to a constitutional battle over the scandal.

Fielding also appears to be trying to head off an attempt by Conyers to obtain e-mails and documents from the Republican National Committee regarding the firings. … Fielding also said that “it was and remains our intention to collect e-mails and documents from those [RNC-controlled] accounts as well as the official White House e-mail and document retention systems” as part of a broader deal with the two committees on staffer testimony.

In a response statement, Conyers was unmoved: “the Judiciary Committee intends to obtain the relevant emails directly from the RNC. The White House position seems to be that executive privilege not only applies in the Oval Office, but to the RNC as well. There is absolutely no basis in law or fact for such a claim.”

O'Reilly "Worst Person" for comments about VA Beach mayor; Morris runner-up

http://mediamatters.org/items/200704120007

On the April 11 edition of MSNBC's Countdown, host Keith Olbermann named Fox News host Bill O'Reilly the "winner" of his nightly "Worst Person in the World" segment for comments O'Reilly made about Virginia Beach Mayor Meyera Oberndorf on the April 6 edition of his nationally syndicated radio program. Olbermann said of O'Reilly: "He not only called the mayor of that city ... quote, 'limited in her intellectual capacity,' but added, quote, 'She should be home baking pies.' As Media Matters for America documented, O'Reilly made his comments during a discussion about a March 30 automobile accident in Virginia Beach, which resulted in the deaths of two teenage girls, reportedly at the hands of an illegal immigrant who said he had been drinking the night of the accident. Olbermann also observed that O'Reilly "returned to the tragedy in New York, in which he said the kids in the Bronx all burned to death because the city, the sanctuary city of New York, doesn't regulate how many people you can cram into a slum."

*****

I am starting to think that O'reilly is 3 sheets to the wind... if he is not ... he must be shitting bricks about the Imus firings.

MSNBC's Crawford on the worst of Imus: "I ... tuned a lot of it out"

http://mediamatters.org/items/200704120008

On the April 12 edition of MSNBC News Live, MSNBC political analyst Craig Crawford said that he had appeared on the Imus in the Morning program "nearly 70 [times] in the last three years" and asserted: "[I]f more people had listened to the whole context of this man's show, they would see a broader picture." On the April 4 edition of Imus in the Morning, Imus referred to the Rutgers University women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos" after executive producer Bernard McGuirk called the team "hard-core hos." As Media Matters for America documented, Imus' remark was part of a long history of racial slurs made on the show by him, his guests, and regular contributors.

So, just wondering... I didn't hear if anything happened to Imus' producer, McGuirk.

Kurdistan’s Covert Back-Channels
How an ex-Mossad chief, a German uberspy, and a gaggle of top-dollar GOP lobbyists helped Kurdistan snag 15 tons of $100 bills.

Laura Rozen
April 11 , 2007

In June 2004, journalist Seymour Hersh reported in the New Yorker that Israelis operating in northern Iraq under the guise of businessmen were in fact cultivating Kurdish proxies to gather intelligence in preparation for possible future action against Iran. About the same time, I too was hearing about Israelis operating in Kurdish northern Iraq. First, from a former senior American diplomat who was invited by an Israeli American businessman to advise the Kurds on how to get billions of dollars they believed they were owed from the Saddam Hussein-era United Nations Oil-for-Food program. The diplomat gave me the Israeli’s name—Shlomi Michaels—and phone numbers for Michaels in Beverly Hills, Turkey, and Israel. The diplomat had walked away from the project, put off by Michaels’ temper, and also, he said, by doubts about what Michaels was really up to, and who he might really be working for.

So I was intrigued when, last summer, I read in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz that Shlomi Michaels had become the subject of an Israeli government investigation for allegedly operating in Iraq without the required authorization from the Israeli authorities. Not only had I known about Michaels for two years, I had spent about as long trying to understand if the Bush administration would embrace the regime-change policy of its Iran hawks, who believe that the solution to Iran’s nuclear ambitions is to promote mass uprisings of ethnic minority and dissident groups such as the Kurds.

During CNN Appearance, Al Franken Calls On CNN To Fire Glenn Beck »
Appearing last night on CNN’s Larry King Live, Al Franken said that firing Don Imus was the “right decision,” but pointed out that CNN has its own anchor who regularly spews hateful and bigoted remarks.

“CNN has Glenn Beck on,” Franken told King. “Glenn Beck asked my congressman, Keith Ellison, who is the first Muslim to be elected to Congress, you know, I just want to ask you, how do I know that you’re not working with the enemy? … I don’t know why that wasn’t grounds for CNN thinking, well, maybe Glenn Beck shouldn’t be on. I mean, how dare he say that to a congressman who has just been elected?”

King asked Franken, “With a lot of [controversial remarks] going on, are you calling for other dismissals?” Franken said, “No, I’m not. Just Glenn Beck on your network.” Watch it:

Some recent low-lights from Glenn Beck:

The anti-gay slur “faggot” is nothing more than “a naughty name.” [1/23/07]

“[Hillary Clinton is] the stereotypical bitch.” [3/15/07]

“What happened to the Duke lacrosse team was practically a lynching without the rope. And for the first time in my life, Mr. Oreo Cookie without the chocolate on the outside can understand why people celebrated when O.J. Simpson was acquitted.” [1/15/07, using a racial slur for African-Americans that refers to “being black on the outside and white on the inside]

“I wonder if I’m alone in this — you know it took me about a year to start hating the 9-11 victims’ families? Took me about a year.” [9/9/05]

“And that’s all we’re hearing about, are the people in New Orleans. Those are the only ones we’re seeing on television are the scumbags.” [9/9/05]

Catharine,

I tried, in part, to explain the Imus insults to some co-workers (yes, I've been called into work again of late).

I said, "I lived among West Indians. Very often I was one of the only white faces in the crowd. It became the norm. It was ordinary. When I visited the States and heard nigger jokes, I cringed."

Degradation is nothing more than a glass house dividing "us" from "them". It is the most vile of human tendencies.

It is why I cannot abide War Dog's mindset. Niggers, liberals, spics; it's all the same. "We are the chosen and they are not."

"They" are nothing more remarkable than a few more of us flailing around in the fog.

Except, of course, for the bigoted War Dog. He stands alone above the unenlightened masses. He lives in a fantasy that imagines a brass ring hanging above every head; slackers don't grab it and bootstrappers do.

I say, let him tell it to the dead in the Green Zone. Tell it to tsunami victims. Tell it to people who sank their investments into the American Dream in New Orleans. Tell it to the unborn who will pay for his "less taxes" credo following his war solution cum failure.

The putz doesn't know how tenuous his gloat-worthy position is.

And bringing him down to size is not the point, nor is it the point with Imus and Limbaugh and others.

The point is that we are all in this together. It ain't us and them. It ain't shirts and skins.

Troops React To Forced Extensions With ‘Anger,’ ‘Frustration,’ ‘Collective Groan’
Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced yesterday that all U.S. Army soldiers in Iraq would have their 12-month tours in Iraq extended by 3 additional months. House Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton (D-MO) called the policy “an additional burden to an already overstretched Army,” and warned not to “underestimate the enormous negative impact this will have on Army families.”

Now, newspapers are returning harrowing accounts from the ground, where U.S. soldiers reacted to the news with “muffled outbursts of anger and frustration laced with dark humor.” The Washington Post reports:

They found out by reading exasperated e-mails from their spouses, hearing somber announcements from their platoon commanders, seeing snippets of the secretary of defense at a televised news conference: The American soldiers who thought they were staying in Iraq one year would now stay 15 months. All of them.

From Texas to Baghdad and Baqubah to the Beltway, the reaction Thursday among U.S. soldiers and their families to the news of the mass extension was akin to a collective groan.

“It flat-out sucks, that’s the only way I can think to describe it,” said Pvt. Jeremy Perkins, 25… “I found this out today from my squad leader. I still haven’t told my wife yet. I’m just trying to figure out exactly how I’m going to break it to her that ‘Honey, uh, yeah, might be home before our next anniversary. Sorry I missed the last one.’”

Similar scenes of soldiers worried about their families and relationships were documented by the New York Times:

The soldiers wondered if their relationships back home could weather an extension and predicted that divorce rates in the military would spike. They muttered about three additional months of forced celibacy and fretted half jokingly about impatient wives and girlfriends. “Now a lot of cheating be going on,” said Sgt. Jonathan Wilson, 29. “I’m serious.”

Specialist Lawson had planned to take a vacation with his former wife, with whom he has two daughters, after he got back to the division’s home base in Schweinfurt, Germany. They were going to give the relationship another try.

“This has totally wrecked everything I had planned,” he said as he slumped on an empty explosives crate.

“Now I’m never going to get together with my ex-wife,” he said. “I’m scared that the longer it takes, more things could happen.”

The price that’s paid for a war without end.

So, if I get to be one, also,
Please. Mama, don't you faint.

G'morning, Toni.

“This has totally wrecked everything I had planned,” he said as he slumped on an empty explosives crate.

That makes me want to cry. It reminded me of someone elses wrecked plans that made me very angry:

From Salon's War Room, April 11:

"Some very thoughtless person"

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates complained bitterly today that "some very thoughtless person" at the Pentagon leaked word about duty extensions for Army units in Iraq and Afghanistan. Gates said that the leak robbed the Army "the opportunity to notify unit commanders who could then talk to their troops 48 hours before we made a public announcement."

Was there maybe another reason that Gates wanted to keep the story under wraps? As War Room reader Terry Anastassiou notes, George W. Bush mentioned duty extensions just yesterday as one of the terrible things that might have to happen if Congress doesn't get him a timetable-free "emergency" supplemental spending bill soon. At a speech at an American Legion post in Virginia, Bush said: "If Congress fails to pass a bill I can sign by mid-May ... Some of our forces now deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq may need to be extended, because other units are not ready to take their places."

We're just guessing here, but it's not all that hard to imagine how this might have played out for the White House. Bush plays hardball with the Democrats into May. The Pentagon announces that it has to extend troop deployments by a few months. And the president says, "See, I warned you. Look what those Democrats have done."

Excerpt from For God's Sake:

"The infiltration of the federal government by large numbers of people seeking to impose a religious agenda — which is very different from simply being people of faith — is one of the most important stories of the last six years. It’s also a story that tends to go underreported, perhaps because journalists are afraid of sounding like conspiracy theorists.

"But this conspiracy is no theory. The official platform of the Texas Republican Party pledges to “dispel the myth of the separation of church and state.” And the Texas Republicans now running the country are doing their best to fulfill that pledge."

I was too drowsy to watch Seder on Countdown, taped it to view later, but I did catch a glimpse of him before I turned off the tube and my impression was, with the dapper haircut and threads, he looked like a man going on a job interview. Very spiffy! Still, I hope the haircut doesn't prevent the headphone cowlicks. Kinda cute. On the other hand, it might prevent early morning inebriation due to The SammyCam drinking game: down a shot for every visible cowlick.

Later. I'll be over at Shameless™ ToniD's News Emporium catching up. :)

What Sam did in the end was smart..

Invite Conservatives to call in and be part of the show..

Air America can not survive just feeding the Far Left Wing in America..

They tried it and lost the Conservative Business they need to balance the books..

Janeane did not want to take any calls..

She still wants to play her worn Katherine Harris bit..

What a waste of time and talent..

But given the fits of temper and hate that she gave the callers, it is easy to see why she wanted to hide behind a character...
