Monday: We walked through the desert for this?!

It looks like the "loyal Bushies" are fleeing this administration like Jews from Egypt. Matthew Dowd didn't even wait for his bread to rise. Tonight begins the Jewish holiday of Passover, but Sam's in the driver's seat for today, before he heads out of town for two days to get in touch with his roots. Today Sam welcomes back Professor Juan Cole, Clintonite Sidney Blumenthal, and Bill Scher from Liberal Oasis. Last stop for yeast!

Britain refuses to back down on calls for Iran

London, April 2 (AP): Britain refused to back down on Monday in its call for the unconditional release of its 15 naval crew members despite an Iranian state-run television station flashing repeated claims that they had confessed to trespassing into Iranian waters.

Video footage has shown four of the 15 saying they were captured in Iranian waters on March 23, including footage Sunday in which two of the sailors used maps to show the alleged location where they were seized. Iran has said the others have also confessed.

Britain said the latest so-called confessions would not alter attempts to secure the crew's release through diplomatic channels.

``The Iranians know our position, they know that stage-managed TV appearances are not going to affect our position,'' Prime Minister Tony Blair's official spokesman said on condition of anonymity in line with government policy. ``They know we have strong international support.''

Ministers were scheduled to hold a government crisis committee meeting.

Libertarianism and the War
Over at Cato Unbound, it's Cato unhinged

The discussion around Brian Doherty's Radicals for Capitalism:

A Freewheeling History of the American Libertarian Movement underscores a point I've been making, not only to my fellow libertarians, but also to Antiwar.com's many left-oriented readers: libertarianism, i.e., the philosophy that government is invariably a malevolent force in human history, is anti-imperialism. Opposition to war lies at the very core of the libertarian argument. Without it, ostensible advocates of liberty eventually give up even their free-market ideology, and, in the name of "pragmatism," wind up assimilated into the world of Washington politics-as-usual.

White House Complaining About Gonzales Hearing Despite Being Offered Earlier Date
The White House is now complaining that the Senate Judiciary Committee won’t move up the date for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’ hearing. Presidential counselor Dan Bartlett said yesterday on CBS that the date should be changed from April 17 to next week, and suggested that senators were playing politics by preventing him from testifying earlier:

BARTLETT: If they wanted to get to the bottom of it, they would accept the proposal the president’s put forward. They would have the attorney general up there next week, having the testimony in open hearing, on the record, for everybody to see. Because the attorney general has made clear that while the explanation of what they did has not been good, that his role in this has been to sign off on the final list, participate in meetings with regards to the implementation of it.

This is a ruse. The Senate is on recess next week, virtually assuring that it couldn’t respond to the White House request. Moreover, according to a Senate aide, Gonzales was offered an earlier date and rejected it:

Last week, the Justice Department did not indicate whether the attorney general would be willing to appear earlier than April 17. He is scheduled to appear that day for a regular oversight hearing that is likely to cover other matters, including allegations by an inspector general that the FBI has been insufficiently judicious in its use of national security letters, which allow investigators to obtain individuals’ telephone, e-mail and financial records.

A Senate Democratic aide said the administration’s eagerness for Gonzales to appear is new. Senators are out of town this week on recess for religious holidays. The administration “knew this and it’s why they are apparently insistent all of a sudden,” the aide said. The aide also said that Judiciary Committee staff members had proposed an appearance the week of April 10, but the Justice Department “said no.”

In any case, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) argues that there is now a good reason to keep the current date. The committee plans to use the interim to interview other Justice Department officials and develop a “factual groundwork” before Gonzales testifies. “So, I think to rush this and then have the attorney general say, ‘Well, I don’t know,’ when if you prepared it properly you could say, ‘Well, Mr. So-and-so says you were at this meeting,’” he said. “That’s why we have to wait.”

Because Bush went after Iraq, not the real terrorists, the real terrorists are re-building

Not only did George Bush not get 'em dead or alive, the leaders of al Qaeda have been expanding its operations. Not only did George Bush not get 'em dead or alive, he's helped spawn -- and train -- a new generation of leaders. While Bush led us in to a war that had nothing to do with September 11th, the actual perpetrators of that attack seem to be the prime beneficiary of that war in Iraq. The NY Times reports:
Much is still not known about the backgrounds of the new Qaeda leaders; some have adopted noms de guerre. Officials and outside analysts said they tend to be in their mid-30s and have years of battlefield experience fighting in places like Afghanistan and Chechnya. They are more diverse than the earlier group of leaders, which was made up largely of battle-hardened Egyptian operatives. American officials said the new cadre includes several Pakistani and North African operatives.

Experts say they still see Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia as largely independent of Al Qaeda’s hub in Pakistan but that they believe the fighting in Iraq will produce future Qaeda leaders.

“The jihadis returning from Iraq are far more capable than the mujahedeen who fought the Soviets ever were,” said Robert Richer, who was associate director of operations in 2004 and 2005 for the C.I.A. “They have been fighting the best military in the world, with the best technology and tactics.”
So, the new Al Qaeda is adept at fighting the U.S. military because the U.S. military is pinned down in a civil war that we helped start.

We are going to be suffering the effects of Bush's disastrous war policy for a long, long time.

Dems To Open New Fronts Against Bush
Washington Post | April 1, 2007 09:33 PM

Even as their confrontation with President Bush over Iraq escalates, emboldened congressional Democrats are challenging the White House on a range of issues -- such as unionization of airport security workers and the loosening of presidential secrecy orders -- with even more dramatic showdowns coming soon.

For his part, Bush, who also finds himself under assault for the firing of eight U.S. attorneys, the conduct of the Iraq war and alleged abuses in government surveillance by the FBI, is holding firm. Though he has vetoed only one piece of legislation since taking office, he has vowed to veto 16 bills that have passed either the House or Senate in the three months since Democrats took control of Congress.

USING FALSE FLAGS TO START A WAR

Former Top-Level Carter Advisor Warns Neo-Cons May Stage Terror & Blame Iran

By Mark Glenn

Once thought to be solely the domain of America-first, patriot types, now it seems that even well-educated leftists are willing to put political differences aside and join ranks with their rival “conspiracy theorists” on the right in suggesting there is something rotten in Washington.

What’s more, some of these individuals are even willing to go so far as to hint that interested parties at the highest levels of the U.S. government would be willing to perpetrate acts of terror on American soil to justify the more insidious agenda of widening the present war in the Middle East to include Iran.

What makes it all the more interesting is that in this case it isn’t some wild-eyed backwoodsman making such serious allegations, but none other than the former national security advisor to U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Zbigniew Brzezinski.

--

But more disturbing than these are the broader actions of Bush and company in regard to Iran and what appears to be the Zionists’ desire to initiate the next phase of the war for Israeli hegemony in the Middle East. At present the largest build-up of naval assets in the area is under way since the war began against Iraq almost four years ago.

American servicemen and women home on leave have had their R&R halted and were ordered to report back to duty immediately. Iranian airspace is repeatedly violated by U.S. drones sent to do aerial reconnaissance and to test the effectiveness of Iran’s early warning defense systems. The United States has been funding and training revolutionary groups (in this case, Iranian communists) who are and will be used as a “fifth column” in further destabilizing Iran if and when hostilities break out.

At least 50% of the additional 21,000 surge troops recently sent to the area are being stationed along the Iran-Iraq border.

For the second year in a row, President Bush will skip the tradition of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch in Washington’s baseball home opener. With Bush’s approval ratings stuck in the low 30s in recent polls, a White House spokeswoman “was asked whether the president feared he’d get booed. ‘No,’ she replied. ‘Certainly not.’” Last Opening Day, Cheney filled in for Bush and was peppered with loud boos. Hillary Clinton's presidential race

Senator Hillary Clinton, wife of former President Bill Clinton, has raised 26 million dollars, breaking fundraising records for the early part of a presidential race. This report from Justin Webb:

Some of her enemies are suggesting that she should have raised even more but Clinton campaigners say they are delighted and they appear to have every reason to be. Hillary Clinton's juggernaut rolls on.

The Clinton campaign has raised more money in the first three months of this year than all nine Democratic candidates combined in the equivalent period for the 2004 election.

Fred Thompson Is for Real

By Robert D. Novak

CNSNews.com Commentary
April 02, 2007

In just three weeks, Fred Thompson has improbably transformed the contest for the Republican presidential nomination.

It is not merely that he has come from nowhere to double digits in national polls.

He is the talk of GOP political circles because he is filling the conservative void in the Republican field of candidates.

Republican activists have complained for months that none of the "big three" contenders -- Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Mitt Romney -- fits the model of a conservative leader for a conservative party.

The party faithful have been waiting for another Ronald Reagan.

But in conversations with them the past year, nobody mentioned Thompson as the messiah until he appeared March 11 on "Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace."

His statement to Wallace that he was "giving some thought" to a presidential run generated a reaction that surprised Thompson. In the first Gallup poll that listed Thompson (March 23-25), he scored 12 percent -- amazing for someone out of public life for more than four years who has not campaigned.

OU student gets arrested, roughed up after Mexican protest

An Ohio University student in Mexico with the Study Abroad program got more than he bargained for when Mexican police swept him up during an anti-President Bush protest on March 13.

In an interview on Friday, senior Chris Stenken, back in Athens after his harrowing experience in southern Mexico, recounted his arrest, beatings by police, and subsequent release.

On March 13, when President George W. Bush came to Merida, a mid-sized Mexican city on the Yucatan peninsula and a quick stop on his tour of Latin America, he must not have expected a warm welcome. A small army of Mexican state police and soldiers, along with a contingent of U.S. Secret Service agents, used barbed wire and concrete fences to build an armed fortress around the Hotel Americana where Bush and his aides would be staying.
...
"I'd say about 10 minutes later, two to five hundred state police jumped out of the back of pickup trucks and began running at the population in the city center, the majority of whom ran away from them," Stenken recalled. "These people weren't necessarily protesters but often just out for the night or returning home from work. I ran into a shoe store to hide myself, where I greeted an employee and told her the police were chasing people. A few moments later, about three police officers came in, threw me on the ground, started punching and kicking me and jabbing me with their police batons before dragging me out by my feet."
...

Iran have confessed to illegally entering Iranian waters but, in an apparent softening in the dispute, said their statements would not air because of "positive changes" from Britain.

The softer tone was apparently mirrored in London, where an official said Britain has agreed to consider discussing with Iran how to avoid future disputes over contested waters in the Persian Gulf.

'US ready to strike Iran on Good Friday'

By JERUSALEM POST STAFF AND AP

Talkbacks for this article: 200

The United States will be ready to launch a missile attack on Iran's nuclear facilities as soon as early this month, perhaps "from 4 a.m. until 4 p.m. on April 6," according to reports in the Russian media on Saturday.

According to Russian intelligence sources, the reports said, the US has devised a plan to attack several targets in Iran, and an assault could be carried out by launching missiles from fighter jets and warships stationed in the Persian Gulf.

Russian news agency RIA Novosti quoted a security official as saying, "Russian intelligence has information that the US Armed Forces stationed in the Persian Gulf have nearly completed preparations for a missile strike against Iranian territory."

Your Modern-Day Republican Party

Various Republican candidates attended a meeting of Club for Growth, and afterwards, National Review's Ramesh Ponnuru spoke to Cato Institute's President Ed Crane about what they said. This brief report from Ponnuru is simply extraordinary:

Crane asked if Romney believed the president should have the authority to arrest U.S. citizens with no review. Romney said he would want to hear the pros and cons from smart lawyers before he made up his mind.

Mitt Romeny can't say -- at least not until he engages in a careful and solemn debate with a team of "smart lawyers" -- whether, in the United States of America, the President has the power to imprison American citizens without any opportunity for review of any kind. But in today's Republican Party, Romney's openness to this definitively tyrannical power is the moderate position.

Ponnuru goes on to note:

Crane said that he had asked Giuliani the same question a few weeks ago. The mayor said that he would want to use this authority infrequently.

It sounds like Giuliani is positioning himself in this race as the "compassionate authoritarian" -- "Yes, of course I have the power to imprison you without charges or review of any kind, but as President, I commit to you that I intend (no promises) to 'use this authority infrequently.'"

... [To highlight how complacent much of the country has become to transparently radical GOP authoritarianism, imagine if a liberal writer posted something along these lines:]

Spoke to both Clinton and Obama today and asked whether they intended to seize and nationalize all American industries after they are inaugurated. Clinton said she would have to consult first with lawyers and decide only after a full debate, and Obama said he would likely only nationalize some industries, perhaps not all.

Or:

Spoke to both Edwards and Clinton today and asked whether they intended to shut down conservative Christian churches. Edwards said he would want to hear the pros and cons from smart lawyers before he made up his mind, and Clinton said that she would want to use this authority infrequently.

Ponnuru's report must be viewed in its context -- the context being that the hero and icon of the Republican Party over the last six years has, in fact, imprisoned U.S. citizens and insisted that he has the power to throw Americans into black holes indefinitely with no charges or review of any kind.

That is the modern Republican Party. Its base, its ruling factions, simply do not believe in our most basic Constitutional guarantees.

From the AFP:

Gunmen killed five African peacekeepers in Darfur in the deadliest attack to hit the embattled contingent since it was first deployed in the western Sudanese region in 2004, a spokesman said Monday.

The deadly shooting came against a backdrop of renewed violence in Darfur and a day after a helicopter carrying the pan-African force's deputy commander came under fire.

"The AMIS (African Mission in Sudan) protection force soldiers were attacked by armed men as they guarded a watering point in Umm Barru in northwest Darfur," spokesman Nureddin Mezni told AFP.

The attack near the Chadian border took place late Sunday.

"Four were killed and one seriously injured while the attackers lost three combatants," Mezni said.

He added that the wounded soldier died Monday of his injuries after "severe weather conditions" made evacuation impossible.

Video: Feinstein rebuke cools GOP senator's Iran 'regime change' rhetoric David Edwards and Mike Sheehan
Published: Monday April 2, 2007

Sen. Kit Bond (R-MO) appears on CNN's 'Late Edition' advocating a change of leadership in Iran, suggesting that the use of military force may be the only way to bring about the fall of Iran's ruling class.

"Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there is any other option other than regime change," says Bond. "I would hope that other nations would be willing to join with the [United Nations] Security Council and start employing escalating sanctions on Iran to force them to change their way with nuclear weapons, or even to bring about a regime change in Iran."

Another guest, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), criticizes hints of military force during a time of sensitive diplomatic negations for the safe return of 15 British sailors that have been detained by Iran. "Cooler heads have to prevail," she says.

Linux: Linux and OSS to Aid the Library of Congress
Posted by Zonk on Monday April 02, @04:23AM
from the go-little-patriotic-penguin-go dept.
flakeman2 writes with a link to Linux.com article about Linux's new role at the Library of Congress. The national archive of books is looking to begin an ambitious digitization project, aimed at getting some rare and crumbling documents into the public record online. These will include
"Civil War and genealogical documents, technical and artistic works concerning photography, scores of books, and the 850 titles written, printed, edited, or published by Benjamin Franklin. According to Brewster Kahle of the Internet Archive, which developed the digitizing technology, open source software will play an 'absolutely critical' role in getting the job done. The main component is Scribe, a combination of hardware and free software. 'Scribe is a book-scanning system that takes high-quality images of books and then does a set of manipulations, gets them in optical character recognition and compressed, so you can get beautiful, printable versions of the book that are also searchable,' says Kahle."

She visited Iraq in 2004 and published an article later that year for Harper's Magazine titled "Baghdad Year Zero" in which she detailed the privatization of Iraq's state-dominated economy. She has continued to cover the issue and her forthcoming book on disaster capitalism is due to be published in the fall.

Naomi Klein recently spoke at an event here in New York celebrating the launch of Jeremy Scahill's first book, "Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army." In her talk, Naomi Klein spoke about the privatization of the state.

There's a new war about Iraq...

Drudge Smears CNN’s Michael Ware As Alcoholic Activist, Ware Responds »
CNN’s Baghdad correspondent Michael Ware has reported from Iraq for four years and regularly corrects the record when politicians mislead about conditions on the ground there. Now he’s under attack.

Yesterday, right-wing Internet gossip Matt Drudge posted an “exclusive” report — based on an anonymous, unnamed source — claiming that Ware had acted inappropriately during a weekend press conference and implying that Ware is an alcoholic:

During a live press conference in Bagdad, Senators McCain and Graham were heckled by CNN reporter Michael Ware. An official at the press conference called Ware’s conduct “outrageous,” saying, “here you have two United States Senators in Bagdad giving first-hand reports while Ware is laughing and mocking their comments. I’ve never witnessed such disrespect. This guy is an activist not a reporter.” […]

This morning on CNN, Ware said the attack was a fabrication: “I did not heckle the senator. Indeed, I didn’t say a word. I didn’t even ask a question. In fact, when I raised my hand to ask a question, the press conference abruptly ended.” Watch it:

Drudge’s “exclusive” also implies that Ware is an alcoholic, quoting an appearance last year on Bill Maher’s HBO comedy show:

Michael Ware has also publicly expressed his views on the war last year in an interview with Bill Maher, saying, “I’ve been given a front-row ticket to watch this slow-motion train wreck … I try to stay as drunk for as long as possible while I’m here … In fact, I’m drinking now.”

It’s clear from the video, which you can watch below the fold, that Ware was joking when he talked about his drinking habits.

While McCain Walks in McNamara’s Footsteps

by Norman Solomon

The media spectacle that John McCain made of himself in Baghdad on Sunday was yet another reprise of a ghastly ritual. Senator McCain expressed “very cautious optimism” and told reporters that the latest version of the U.S. war effort in Iraq is “making progress.” Three years ago, in early April 2004, when an insurrection exploded in numerous Iraqi cities, U.S. occupation spokesman Dan Senor informed journalists: “We have isolated pockets where we are encountering problems.” Nine days later, President Bush declared: “It’s not a popular uprising. Most of Iraq is relatively stable.”

For government officials committed to a war based on lies, such claims are in the wiring.

When Defense Secretary Robert McNamara visited Vietnam for the first time, in May 1962, he came back saying that he’d seen “nothing but progress and hopeful indications of further progress in the future.”

In October 1966, when McNamara held a press conference at Andrews Air Force Base after returning from a trip to Vietnam, he spoke of the progress he’d seen there. Daniel Ellsberg recalls that McNamara made that presentation “minutes after telling me that everything was much worse than the year before.”

Despite the recent “surge” in the kind of media hype that McCain was trying to boost last weekend in Baghdad, this spring has begun with most news coverage still indicating that the war is going badly for American forces in Iraq. Some pundits say that U.S. military fortunes there during the next few months will determine the war’s political future in Washington. And opponents of the war often focus their arguments on evidence that an American victory is not possible.

But shifts in the U.S. military role on the ground in Iraq, coupled with the Pentagon’s air war escalating largely out of media sight, could enable the war’s promoters to claim a notable reduction of “violence.” And the American death toll could fall due to reconfiguration or reduction of U.S. troop levels inside Iraq.

Such a combination of developments would appeal to the fervent nationalism of U.S. news media. But the antiwar movement shouldn’t pander to jingo-narcissism. If we argue that the war is bad mainly because of what it is doing to Americans, then what happens when the Pentagon finds ways to cut American losses — while continuing to inflict massive destruction on Iraqi people?

American news outlets will be inclined to depict the Iraq war as winding down when fewer Americans are dying in it. That happened during the last several years of the Vietnam War, while massive U.S. bombing — and Vietnamese deaths — continued unabated.

The vast bulk of the U.S. media is in the habit of defining events around the world largely in terms of what’s good for the U.S. government — through the eyes of top officials in Washington. Routinely, the real lives of people are noted only as shorthand for American agendas. The political spin of the moment keeps obscuring the human moment.

Awakening from a 40-year nap, an observer might wonder how much has changed since the last war that the United States stumbled over because it could not win. The Congressional Record is filled with insistence that the lessons of Vietnam must not be forgotten. But they cannot be truly remembered if they were never learned in the first place.

There will be another round of mediation between Josh's lawers and

turn out a big crowd tomorrow morning outside the Federal Building.

At the last mediation as Josh was being driven into the basement car

meant a great deal to him.

A large presence of supporters would also show the feds and the press that Josh's support is broad and that we are determined to see him released immediately.

American reported missing in Iran

Senate majority leader threatening vote to end Iraq war funding
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The standoff between Congress and the White House over Iraq is ratcheting up another notch. The top Democrat in the Senate is threatening to try to end nearly all funding for the Iraq war if the president vetoes a more loosely worded timetable for withdrawal.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., is cosponsoring a new Iraq bill with war opponent Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis. Their bill would stop most war funding after March 31, 2008, allowing spending in just three areas: fighting al Qaeda, training Iraqis and protecting the U.S. Embassy and other personnel.

Reid's spokesman, Jim Manley, admits the bill would require heavy political lifting. "This is an uphill battle," he told CNN, "but it's part of an attempt to try and force a change in policy."

Justices refuse to review latest appeal from Guantanamo detainees
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Supreme Court refused Monday to jump back into an ongoing legal fight over how dozens of foreign terror suspects detained by the U.S. military at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, will face justice before upcoming tribunals, the latest showdown over the president's war power authority.

The justices, by a 6-3 vote, denied appeals from two groups of prisoners. Preliminary hearings before military commissions in Guantanamo have already begun.

In a brief order written by Justices John Paul Stevens and Anthony Kennedy, the court noted the detainees had not gone through the usual legal routes for relief before appealing to the high court.

"Despite the obvious importance of the issues raised in these cases, we are persuaded that traditional rules governing our decision of constitutional issues ... and our practice of requiring the exhaustion of available remedies as a precondition to accepting jurisdiction." --From CNN Supreme Court Producer Bill Mears (Posted 10:11 a.m.)

Feingold, Reid Ups The Ante
By: Nicole Belle @ 10:29 AM - PDT Have I said recently how much I loves me some Feingold? This morning, Sen. Russ Feingold, along with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid have issued a statement that lets George Bush no in unmistakable terms that the days of the blank check are OVER:

U.S. Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) announced today that they are introducing legislation that will effectively end the current military mission in Iraq and begin the redeployment of U.S. forces. The bill requires the President to begin safely redeploying U.S. troops from Iraq 120 days from enactment, as required by the emergency supplemental spending bill the Senate passed last week. The bill ends funding for the war, with three narrow exceptions, effective March 31, 2008.

"I am pleased to cosponsor Senator Feingold's important legislation," Reid said. "I believe it is consistent with the language included in the supplemental appropriations bill passed by a bipartisan majority of the Senate. If the President vetoes the supplemental appropriations bill and continues to resist changing course in Iraq, I will work to ensure this legislation receives a vote in the Senate in the next work period."

That's right, George. You veto the funding bill, you get an even tougher bill. Bob Geiger has more…

At Salon (watch short ad for day pass), Russ Feingold tells the minority party to stop obfuscating behind the talking point of "supporting the troops," especially when their rhetoric was the exact opposite for the mission in Somalia in the '90s:

The debate about the Iraq war is the most important, and the most difficult, issue we face as a country. Any American, including any member of Congress, is entitled to support or oppose Congress' using its constitutional power to end our involvement in this disastrous war. But, in contrast to the 1993 debate about Somalia, today some wrongly suggest that ending funding for the Iraq war is tantamount to ending funding for the troops. That misleading argument makes it harder to have the thoughtful, responsible debate about the war that Congress and the American people so badly need.

Now is no time for phony arguments against ending funding for the Iraq war. There may be big differences between the military missions in Somalia and Iraq, but Congress' constitutional power to end a military mission hasn't changed, and neither has the fact that this power can be used without jeopardizing the safety of U.S. troops. As Congress debates Iraq — and considers the new Feingold-Reid legislation — we should remember Somalia, put false arguments aside, and have an open, honest debate about a war that drags on with no end in sight.

Reaction to Q1 Fundraising
The most important thing to keep in mind is that raising money is not a direct measure of a presidential candidate's viability. It's interesting because it's a measure of support other than polls, but campaign history is littered with examples of candidates that are good at raising money and don't ultimately win their party's nomination.

Craig Crawford gives us another caveat: "Before everyone gets too excited, let’s wait and see how much" Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) "has spent -- the number that usually takes a bit longer to leak out. Those often elusive cash-on-hand statistics tell us more about where campaigns are really positioned at this early stage. Many times they spend so much to raise their funds that that they are not as strong going forward as they appear for the moment. How much a candidate has left in the bank for the long road ahead is what really matters."

These numbers won’t be known until April 15, when Q1 reports are formally filed with the FEC.

Meanwhile, The Hotline says three numbers matter -- primary receipts, primary receipts plus transfers from other campaign accounts and cash on hand -- and each impacts the campaigns differently.

Foreign workers sue U.S. companies

By Alan Gomez, USA TODAY
Labor leaders overseas are turning increasingly to an obscure 18th-century law that could for the first time make U.S. companies liable at home for the violent and sometimes murderous actions of their employees around the world.
Several lawsuits alleging violation of the Alien Tort Statute are awaiting trial in federal courts, filed with the help of unions and activist groups in the USA.

One against Geo W. Drummond Ltd. of Alabama alleges the contracting company's subsidiary in Colombia paid death squads to kill labor leaders.

The lawsuits have set up a showdown over whether boardrooms in the USA should pay big-money verdicts for crimes not prosecuted in countries where corruption and violence are often seen as a cost of doing business.

"I realize that there are problems in lots of different countries," said William Jeffress, a lawyer for Drummond. "But to have the U.S. courts attempt to provide remedies for all of the injustices that occur in countries around the world is not a rational system."

At least a dozen such cases are ongoing. Among them:

•Relatives of people killed in an airstrike by the Colombia military say that Occidental Petroleum of Los Angeles should pay damages because its security contractor worked with the military to take out leftist terrorists accused of sabotaging Occidental's pipeline operation. The plaintiffs say the attack killed 17 unarmed civilians.

•Chevron, headquartered in San Francisco, is fighting a lawsuit filed by Nigerians who say the company should be held responsible for the killing of protesters by Nigerian security forces outside a refinery owned by its subsidiary.

•Del Monte is being sued by five union officials in Guatemala who say they were kidnapped by armed men hired by the Miami corporation's subsidiary and forced to quit their jobs at a banana farm.

All of the lawsuits come under the Alien Tort Statute, a 1789 law that allows citizens of foreign nations to sue in U.S. courts for actions that violate the "law of nations," such as genocide, torture and slavery. Human rights activists began using the law in the 1980s to sue foreign military leaders accused of repression who had retired in the USA. Now, those activists have teamed with labor unions here to sue U.S. corporations for oppression of workers in Latin America and Africa.

"A lot of these countries do not have judicial systems which are independent and free of corruption," said Dan Kovalik, a lawyer representing the families of victims killed in the Drummond case. "It's unfair to make them try to bring a case where it would be futile."

Former FBI Agent on Private Business in Iran Missing

By Robin Wright
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, April 2, 2007; 1:52 PM

A former FBI agent has been missing in Iran since March 8, according to U.S. officials.

The unnamed former agent was on private business, but the United States is now sufficiently concerned about his welfare that the State Department today sent a formal message to Iran through Swiss intermediaries asking about his whereabouts and his situation. The Swiss Embassy represents U.S. interests in Iran.

The American was visiting Kish Island, an Iranian resort and "free trade zone" off the country's southwestern coast that does not require an Iranian visa to visit. He had traveled to Iran from the United Arab Emirates, U.S. officials said.

"We don't know where he is. We have no reliable information on him," a senior official said. "I would not characterize him as a hostage."

U.S. officials stress that the missing American was not working in any capacity for the U.S. government or any agency. His specialty at the FBI was not Iran, officials add.

In a broadcast on Fox News last week, host Sean Hannity offered Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice free tickets to Major Leage Baseball's All Star Game this summer. Rice said she would go if Hannity would offer to protect her from any stray balls.

"If you're ever really interested, I have a pretty good connection with a good buddy of mine who has the greatest seats at Yankee Stadium and I'd love to take you there," Fox News host Sean Hannity said on air.

Rice responded that she'd "love that" and noted that she is a Yankees fan.

Hannity then mentioned that his son had been hit by a foul ball in the seats last season, and offered to protect the Secretary from any line drives.

"You have to protect me, Sean. I hope you can catch," Rice joked back.

Hannity proceeded to interview the Secretary, asking her about the detained British Marines and sailors in Iran, US policy toward Iran, and other aspects of US foreign policy.

We can end the war in Iraq. We can achieve universal health care coverage. We can commit to energy independence. We can restore America's rightful place on the world stage.

Working together, we'll get our country back on track. It's going to be a long journey with a lot of hard work, but I can't think of anything more important.

So let's get back to work. I need your help right now on an important issue.

Last week we passed historic legislation in the Senate that calls for a phased redeployment for our troops in Iraq while ensuring they have the support they need. It's an important first step in ending the war in Iraq. But President Bush has threatened to veto the bill.

The American people have had enough of the president's failed strategy in Iraq. Join me today. Tell President Bush to listen to the will of the people and withdraw his veto threat.

Beware of State Power-Noam Chomsky Interviewed by George McLeod

...
McLeod: Turning to Israel, you have been very critical of Israeli policies. However, many observers, such as author Alan Dershowitz, say that Israel has been disproportionately criticised. He cites the fact that the UN has condemned Israel more than any other country and argues that Israel is far from being the world's worst human rights abuser. How do you respond to that?

Chomsky: Remember that Alan Dershowitz is a fanatic supporter of Israeli violence and atrocities, so he is not a neutral observer - he is way out in the extreme. It's sort of like asking a communist party member in the 1950s, "Look how much Russia is condemned, it's not the worst country in the world."

But aside from that, there is a reason why Israel is condemned. Plenty of other countries are much worse internally. But the military occupation of Palestine is very harsh and it has a potential settlement - everyone knows what the settlement is: a two-state settlement based on the international border. But Israel and the US have rejected it.

However, in one respect I agree with Dershowitz. It is wrong to condemn Israel - you should be condemning the US. Israel can do nothing without US authorisation. It's a small country and it consciously chose to be dependent on the US. We can even date it - in 1971, Israel was offered a full peace treaty by Egypt. Israel had a choice, either expansion or security. It chose expansion, and Henry Kissinger backed it, so Israel could do it.

Since then, Israel has lost its choices. If it wants a peace settlement, it can have it. The Arab League proposal of 2002, which is only one of many that go back to 1976, would grant Israel normalised relations and integration into the region. But it would mean abandoning expansion, which it does not want to do.

Figure another country that is in that situation, actually, there is one - Morocco, which is occupying the Western Sahara, but that's a US ally, so it's ignored.

Attention Cat Owners :)

A week ago our cat was diagnosed with diabetes and now needs a special diet and two shots a day. Was a nervewrecking week learning the new routine but the worst of it all was our cat didn't really get better - did not stop urinating and drinking which are the prominent signs of diabetes. Also she was slower by the day ... :(

Today we brought her back to the Vet for check-up and turns out she has a urinary track infection. Thats why the shots didn't work as they should have. She is staying at doctor's office overnight and Vet assured us she will be ok with anti-bios and we are to pick her up tom. She never had a UTI before.

I remember Reefer's cat had diabetes, too. Hope he reads this.

Please post, guys, if you had a similar experience with your cat.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) - If President Bush vetoes an Iraq war spending bill as promised, Congress quickly will provide the money without the withdrawal timeline the White House objects to because no lawmaker ``wants to play chicken with our troops,'' Sen. Barack Obama said Sunday.

``My expectation is that we will continue to try to ratchet up the pressure on the president to change course,'' the Democratic presidential candidate said in an interview with The Associated Press. ``I don't think that we will see a majority of the Senate vote to cut off funding at this stage.

I know, Jim,
mystery health probs with pets are the worst. Hope this will be it and it doesn't end up like that after all ...

Re Vet expenses - we have been so fortunate with our cat. Always v. healthy esp. since cat fights are a thing of the past. Years ago One nasty scratch from neighbors' cat once turned into an absess and needed surgery and that was the most we paid at the Vets AFAIR.

We had to pay $700plus last week and another $700 this week, too. Yikes!

toniD,
we pretty much ruled out that possibility. Also, we got the new diet food from the Vet's office and you would think by now they know what they are selling there. I hope.

But we checked the brand on the net also - any which way - and so far its okay cat food.

But to have this happen during the pet food disaster ... it certainly never leaves your mind.
