Monday: We walked through the desert for this?!

It looks like the "loyal Bushies" are fleeing this administration like Jews from Egypt. Matthew Dowd didn't even wait for his bread to rise. Tonight begins the Jewish holiday of Passover, but Sam's in the driver's seat for today, before he heads out of town for two days to get in touch with his roots. Today Sam welcomes back Professor Juan Cole, Clintonite Sidney Blumenthal, and Bill Scher from Liberal Oasis. Last stop for yeast!

Does this Stephanie Miller like Hillary?

She likes her as far as she thinks she'd probably be a good president, but hates her triangulations and also her voice. Thinks she needs some lessons on speaking in public loudly. Especially with Flat A's. And does an impression of Hillary (saying that it comes from Mars Attacks).

Stephanie Miller is great, but I doubt Air America is going to go with a syndicated Jones Radio show. I wouldn't want them to buy her, since clearly they BLOW at business.

I was surprised to read so many people lugging Ms. Miller here. Her show gets real funny sometimes.

I've had to pull my car over a couple of times, I was laughing so goddam hard at her show.

That one day Miller (inadvertantly?) replaced Sam here in NYC was enough for me to say if Sam goes and Miller replaces him I'll have to find something else to listen to until Randi comes on.

Sammy & Armey followed by Miller would just be too much for me to take. Awful.

The good thing about Miller's show...and hang with me on this....is that she brings in the slow learners and people who are in conversion from right wing illness.

A lot of more radical libs have a problem with this...but the market is there.

Quite a few tight assed people tune into Miller's show...like what they hear...and become more open minded.

That's a GOOD THING!

It's a good show...the three of them work well together

Exclusive: Iran Nuclear Bomb Could Be Possible by 2009

April 02, 2007 6:15 PM

Brian Ross and Christopher Isham Report:

Iran has more than tripled its ability to produce enriched uranium in the last three months, adding some 1,000 centrifuges which are used to separate radioactive particles from the raw material.

The development means Iran could have enough material for a nuclear bomb by 2009, sources familiar with the dramatic upgrade tell ABC News.

The sources say the unexpected expansion is taking place at Iran's nuclear enrichment plant outside the city of Natanz, in a hardened facility 70 feet underground.

A spokesperson for the United Nation's International Atomic Energy Agency, the IAEA, declined to comment citing the "extreme sensitivity" of the situation with Iran.

Iran has already declared its above-ground operations at Natanz have some 320 centrifuges.

Novak: Fred Thompson for Real

Thompson garnered significant support (12 percent) in the first Gallup Poll conducted after he said on March 11 that he may run for president in 2008. McCain was stagnant at about 25 percent, Giuliani dropped to 31 percent, and Romney fell to 3 percent.

Novak writes: "Sophisticated social conservative activists tell me ... they are coming to see Thompson as the only conservative who can be nominated. Their appreciation of him stems not from his eight years as a U.S. senator from Tennessee but from his role as Manhattan district attorney on the TV series 'Law & Order.' The part was molded to Thompson's specifications as a tough prosecutor, lending him political star power."

Novak concludes on a personal note: "I met Fred Thompson in 1974 when he was Howard Baker's 31-year-old minority counsel on the Watergate investigation. I considered him cool, careful and conservative. He still is, and that is how he would run for president, which appears in the offing."

Half of 'Surge' Forces Now Deployed to Iraq

BAGHDAD -- About half of the nearly 30,000 additional U.S. troops being sent to Iraq in a new effort to stabilize the country have now been deployed, a senior U.S. military official said on Sunday.

The rest were either in staging areas in neighboring Kuwait or on their way, Rear Admiral Mark Fox told a news conference in Baghdad. In total there are about 140,000 U.S. troops now in Iraq.

"We expect the remainder to be in place by early June," he said.

Most of the troops are being sent to Baghdad for a U.S.-backed security crackdown to curb rampant sectarian violence. Reinforcements are also being sent to western Anbar province, heartland of the Sunni Arab insurgency.

40 years ago there was a march on the Pentagon and here we are 40 years later with a march on the Pentagon and another illegal and immoral war.

I dont want to be marching when Im 90 years old in 2047 in another illegal and immoral war.

Lets stop this Bullsh*t, now!

Do you know why our countires get into these bullsh*t wars all of the time?

Its for the corporations!

Its for the corporations like Halliburton and Exxon and Blackwater and to make them rich.

Its to line the pockets of George Bush and Dick Cheney and all the war criminals

Were here in the shadow of the war machine.

Its like being in the shadow of the death star. (Huh?)

They take their death and destruction and they export it around the world.

We need to shut it down. We need to stop paying our taxes to fund this war.

A good soldier does not inspire fear;

A good leader does not exercise authority.

This is the value of unimportance;
This is how to win the cooperation of others;

that's sad. especially because, apparently, the blogger that atrios wants to shoot in the face wasn't really whining about blogrolls, but was simply commenting on the whole blogroll amnesty day phenomenon, albeit in a wide-ranging and thoughtful manner; that is to say, inspecting the issue from all sides.

(we find it amusing that terrance's post on amnesty day quotes this humble site quite a bit to illustrate the one side of the argument that favors big blogrolls; we would think that if duncan wanted to shoot anyone in the face, it would be skippy, and not terrance, who goes on to present the other side of the argument quite thoroghly, too. well, shoot the messenger, and all that.)

apparently, in keeping with jon swift's original assessment of blogroll amnesty day, duncan reverts to a decidedly conservative response when confronted with an opposing opinion. that's too bad.

we would posit that if the original blogroll purge, and blogrolls in themselves, were of such unimportance (as stated by those who supported the purge), then duncan is guilty of supreme over-reacting.

(caveat: we know that duncan didn't really shoot terrance in the face, nor does he actually want to. but if it's so unimiportant, why does the discussion of amnesty day by other blogs who are not in the atrios sphere of influence elicit such an extreme reaction by duncan? doth the lady protest too much?)

thanks and a tip of the kangaroo tail to jon swift who alerted us to the cheney-like desires of duncan.

Evening all.

Just home from work and was reading up blog. Sorry I missed dr and RJ.

There's a full moon and it was very evident at work tonight. Everyone was in a bad mood so I had to put on the charm to settle them down. Most left smiling though.

How's everyone.

Another one bites the dust. Wade Horn, the Bush administration’s point man for welfare reform, Head Start and abstinence education, resigned Monday as assistant secretary for children and families. Horn “oversaw a dramatic increase in funding for abstinence education, which now exceeds $200 million a year” and gave more money to “faith-based groups and organizations that work to help couples improve their marriage.”

Pelosi shrugs off White House criticism of Syria trip. “Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Monday shrugged off White House criticism of her upcoming trip to Damascus… Speaking hours after arriving in Lebanon, Pelosi indicated the Bush administration was singling out her trip to Syria, but ignoring the recent visits by Republican members of Congress. ‘It’s interesting because three of our colleagues, who are all Republicans, were in Syria yesterday and I didn’t hear the White House speaking out about that,’ Pelosi said… ‘I think that it was an excellent idea for them to go,’ said Pelosi, who is to meet Syrian leaders Wednesday. ‘And I think it’s an excellent idea for us to go, as well.’”

Senators Now Decrying ‘Pork’ Voted To Approve ‘Railroad To Nowhere’
Because Americans strongly back a timeline to redeploy from Iraq, conservatives have focused their opposition to the recently-passed Iraq redeployment legislation on the domestic spending that’s attached:

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY): “They used this serious effort, what should have been a serious effort to fund the troops as an opportunity…to get pork for various and sordid products back home.”

Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS): “So why are we going through this exercise of heaping pork on the backs of our men and women in uniform and trying to put artificial dates which will not occur?”

We know this isn’t true. Just last year, these same conservatives endorsed the emergency supplemental bill that included $15 billion in domestic spending, including “$4 billion for farmers, $1.1 billion for Gulf Coast fisheries, and $1 billion in grants to states.”

The bill also included the notorious $700 million Railroad to Nowhere in Mississippi, reportedly the largest earmark ever, sponsored by Senate Minority Whip Lott. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) introduced an amendment aimed at eliminating Lott’s egregious pork project, but it was defeated. Fully 18 senators who last week opposed the Iraq spending bill — including Minority Leader McConnell and Minority Whip Lott — voted last year to preserve the Railroad to Nowhere.

Andrea Mitchell (sort of) issues a correction. Salon.com’s Joan Walsh highlights a strange moment on tonight’s Hardball: “Without mentioning what had been discussed on Sunday, Matthews asked Mitchell, rather out of the blue, to talk about what Petraeus was telling senators. ‘It’s a good thing you bring that up,’ Mitchell replied, and she went on to say that Petraeus recently held a ‘closed circuit briefing’ for senators of both parties, ‘Democrats as well as Republicans.’ But Mitchell also repeated her claim from Sunday that ‘moderate Republican senators’ were privately saying they opposed Bush’s so-called troop surge, but would publicly support it out of respect for Petraeus, and give the general and the president until the summer to make progress in the war.”

The botched US raid that led to the hostage crisis
By Patrick Cockburn
Published: 03 April 2007
A failed American attempt to abduct two senior Iranian security officers on an official visit to northern Iraq was the starting pistol for a crisis that 10 weeks later led to Iranians seizing 15 British sailors and Marines.

Early on the morning of 11 January, helicopter-born US forces launched a surprise raid on a long-established Iranian liaison office in the city of Arbil in Iraqi Kurdistan. They captured five relatively junior Iranian officials whom the US accuses of being intelligence agents and still holds.

In reality the US attack had a far more ambitious objective, The Independent has learned. The aim of the raid, launched without informing the Kurdish authorities, was to seize two men at the very heart of the Iranian security establishment.

Better understanding of the seriousness of the US action in Arbil - and the angry Iranian response to it - should have led Downing Street and the Ministry of Defence to realise that Iran was likely to retaliate against American or British forces such as highly vulnerable Navy search parties in the Gulf. The two senior Iranian officers the US sought to capture were Mohammed Jafari, the powerful deputy head of the Iranian National Security Council, and General Minojahar Frouzanda, the chief of intelligence of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, according to Kurdish officials.

US President George W. Bush, trying to make a crucial legal deadline, rushed a newly minted free trade agreement with South Korea to Congress early Monday, arguing the deal would "further enhance" the bilateral partnership.

The move came in the dead of night, barely an hour after an announcement in Seoul that US and South Korean negotiators had reached the deal that is expected to boost trade between the two countries by billions of dollars.

Still, it is not certain that the administration will be able to ratify the accord, the largest for the United States since the North American Free Trade Agreement, by the end of June, when Bush's so-called fast-track trade promotion authority expires.

The authority allows the president to submit trade agreements to Congress for a straight up or down vote, thus preventing lawmakers from introducing piecemeal amendments.

It was granted to Bush in 2001, when the House of Representatives was controlled by fellow Republicans, by a razor-thin majority. Now that Democrats control both chambers, its renewal appears problematic.

This smells, why the rush?

Here's the lede of a piece from the always invaluable Warren Strobel ...

President Bush is losing his top day-to-day adviser on Iraq, the White House confirmed Monday.

Meghan L. O'Sullivan, who has played a key behind-the-scenes role in implementing Bush's controversial Iraq policies over the past four years, will leave later this spring.

Her departure, which follows that of her deputy, could leave the White House with a vacuum of long-term experience on Iraq policy, and it comes as Bush and the Democratic-controlled Congress prepare for a showdown over withdrawing U.S. troops.

Not to be catty. But could leave the White House with a vacuum of long-term experience on Iraq policy? Think that train's already left the station, hasn't it?

'Long-term experience' implies somebody knew what they were doing, in the beginning. That train never had a tract to roll on.

Bush will hold a Rose Garden press conference today at 10 am to slam Congress’ efforts to push a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq. CNN’s White House correspondent Elaine Quijano reports:

President Bush is showing no signs of blinking in his opposition to any kind of timetable for U.S. troop withdrawals in Iraq. And essentially, Soledad, that’s the message we expect to hear once more from the President today when he delivers remarks in the Rose Garden.

Your comment that Obama said (or predicted) that the Democrats would cave in as soon as Bush issued a veto were off of the mark in a number of ways.In the first place it is not true the the CNN statements matched the alleged AP statements.  In fact there is a big contradiction.  Take a look at the DailyKos thread dealing with this here.So the real question is did Obama really say the key thing that the AP article claims he did.  There is reason to think that he did not because even though the AP article is full of quotes that are similar to the things that Obama said on CNN that say day, the key statement that was made the focus of the AP article where Obama is paraphrased as saying the after a veto congress would "quickly"  respond with a bill "without timelines" is not supported by any direct quotes. There is a lot of discussion about this odd fact in the above thread, and in the end many posters agreed that the AP article is very suspect, and is probably a hit on Obama designed to keep him from looking good next to Hillary on the anti-war front. The bottom line is that the old style print media will do this sort of thing to any Democrat and we just can't accept letting them paraphrase what candidates say.  Since there is a transcript of the CNN interview and none of the AP interview we should accept
that. And it is just nonsense to suggest that Obama said on CNN what the AP article claims he said in its interview.Fred in Vermont

It seems that if you have a child serving in Iraq, you are excused for being against the war because you are emotional unless you are Cindy Sheehan, in which case you are crazy. If you don't have a child serving in Iraq and you are against the war, you are mean and unpatriotic and don't understand or support the troops. What if you are for the war and don't have a child in Iraq? I guess that just makes you a Republican?
