Friday: The Casualest Casual Friday Ever

Sam's so casual today, he's strapping a heart monitor to himself to prove that even his heart rate is slowing down. As always, Sam will be taking your calls on all topics at 866-303-2270, and we'll have the SammyCam in full effect starting at 9:30 eastern. And you'll want to connect to that SammyCam, so you can feast your eyes on Janeane Garofalo, who'll come by in the third hour to hang out. Plus, the always dapper Joe Conason makes his regular Friday visit. Enjoy.

I agree. When I had to study the Constitution, when I was a kid, it was a chore and I studied enough to pass the test. I can remember sertain things but now wish I had studied more.

I think it would be a good idea to have seminars on the constitution. Especially now.

The four top administrators in the U.S. Attorney's Office in Minnesota have resigned their administrative positions. According to highly placed sources, the administrators have quit in protest over the job being done by Rachel Paulose, the U.S. Attorney for Minnesota.

The resignations came in the aftermath of the controversial firing of eight U.S. Attorneys across the country.

Dick "Last Throes" Cheney, overseer of the worst foreign policy mistake in US History, attacks the Speaker. The media lap it up.
by Joe Sudbay (DC) · 4/06/2007 08:27:00 AM ET
Discuss this post here: Comments (23) · digg it · reddit · FARK · · Link

Dick "Last Throes" Cheney launched an attack on Nancy Pelosi yesterday via Rush Limbaugh as reported in the LA Times:
Vice President Dick Cheney scolded House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday for "bad behavior" in traveling to Syria, a country that he said promoted terrorism.

In a conversation with fellow conservative Rush Limbaugh on Limbaugh's radio show, Cheney belittled Pelosi's public statement after she met with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus on Wednesday.

"It was a non-statement, a nonsensical statement, and didn't make any sense at all that she would suggest that those talks could go forward as long as the Syrians conducted themselves as a prime state sponsor of terror," Cheney said.
Stop media. You know Dick Cheney lies and has no credibility. Just because he says something to Rush Limbaugh of all people doesn't mean it's true. But lets talk about nonsensical statements that don't make any sense. On March 29, 2003, the Washington Post provided a synopsis of Cheney's pre-war spin:
On CBS's "Face the Nation" on March 16, Cheney said the fight would be "weeks rather than months. There's always the possibility of complications that you can't anticipate, but I have great confidence in our troops." Cheney also predicted the fight would "go relatively quickly, but we can't count on that." That same day on NBC's "Meet the Press," Cheney said, "I think things have gotten so bad inside Iraq, from the standpoint of the Iraqi people, my belief is we will, in fact, be greeted as liberators." It was then he predicted that the regular Iraqi soldiers would not "put up such a struggle," and that even "significant elements of the Republican Guard . . . are likely to step aside." Asked if Americans are prepared for a "long, costly and bloody battle," Cheney replied: "Well, I don't think it's likely to unfold that way. . . . The read we get on the people of Iraq is there is no question but what they want to the get rid of Saddam Hussein, and they will welcome as liberators the United States when we come to do that." Cheney has spoken that way for months.
How about his post-war comments as this debacle has dragged on and gotten worse. Does anyone in the media remember Cheney's comment about how the insurgency was in the "last throes"? He said that on June 20, 2005.

Yet, the media is buying the White House spin that Nancy Pelosi made a foreign policy blunder. The entire Bush administration has been a foreign policy blunder -- and a lot of people are dead because of those failures.

As Dan Froomkin noted earlier this week, "too many reporters prefer uncritical transcription to the kind of tough but fair analysis that would be required to put what the president [or vice president] says in context." Too many reporters never provided context to White House statements. They regurgitate them -- even when it's Dick Cheney spewing on Rush Limbaugh. That's just absurd on its face. But, the White House knows how to play them. As usual, Tim Russert fell for it this morning on the Today Show -- acting all sanctimonious as he discussed this issue with foreign policy expert Matt Lauer. The Bush team counts on just that kind of reaction from the patsies in the press. And, true to form, they got it.

George Bush is a miserable failure as President. The American people know it.

Slaughter says Pelosi trip to Syria fills diplomatic void
By Jerry Zremski
Updated: 04/06/07 7:44 AM

SAVE EMAIL PRINT POPULAR + Larger Font + Smaller Font WASHINGTON — Traveling with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on her controversial trip to the Middle East, Rep. Louise M. Slaughter on Thursday strongly defended their meeting with Syrian President Bashar al- Assad, saying Democratic lawmakers are doing the kind of common-sense diplomatic work that the Bush administration has scorned for years.

In a telephone interview from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Slaughter said Pelosi and the rest of the congressional delegation delivered a stern message to Assad earlier this week: that the United States is very concerned that insurgents are entering Iraq from Syria.

“We think a lot of the problems that have gone on in Iraq are really instigated here, in this part of the world,” Slaughter said.

That being the case, Slaughter, DFairport, echoed the advice of the bipartisan Iraq Study Group, which said discussions with Syria and Iran are key to ending the chaos in Iraq.

“Beyond that, the generals on the ground in Iraq have made it very clear . . . we can’t win a military victory without a diplomatic victory,” Slaughter said. “And you can’t win a diplomatic victory if we’re not talking to people.”

Time's Joe Klein blasts Bush: 'A leader so clearly unfit to lead' Mike Sheehan
Published: Friday April 6, 2007

Time columnist Joe Klein has written a scathing critique of President Bush that borders on a call for his impeachment.

In a op-ed entitled "An Administrations's Epic Collapse," Klein writes, "The three big Bush stories of 2007 -- the decision to 'surge' in Iraq, the scandalous treatment of wounded veterans at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the firing of eight U.S. Attorneys for tawdry political reasons -- precisely illuminate the three qualities that make this Administration one of the worst in American history."

Klein, who gained fame as the "anonymous" author of the Clinton-era political novel 'Primary Colors,' lists the three qualities as arrogance, incompetence and cynicism.

"Iraq comes first, as always," he continues. "From the start, it has been obvious that personal motives have skewed the President's judgment about the war. ... But never was Bush's adolescent petulance more obvious than in his decision to ignore the Baker-Hamilton report and move in the exact opposite direction" by increasing the number of troops and using inappropriate strategy.

"There was no way he was going to accept [its findings] once the press began to portray the report as Daddy's friends coming to the rescue," Klein quotes a member of the Baker-Hamilton commission.

"General David Petraeus has repeatedly said, 'A military solution to Iraq is not possible," writes Klein. "Translation: This thing fails unless there is a political deal among the Shi'ites, Sunnis and Kurds. There is no such deal on the horizon, largely because of the President's aversion to talking to people he doesn't like."

Klein excoriates Bush over the Walter Reed scandal, particularly in the seemingly hypocritical way the president accused Democrats of favoring political battles at home over supporting troops abroad. "Such demagoguery is particularly outrageous given the Administration's inability to provide our troops 'what they need' at the nation's premier hospital for veterans," says Klein.

"The mold and decrepitude at Walter Reed are likely to be only the beginning of the tragedy, the latest example of incompetence in this Administration," Klein continues. He quotes a veterans activist who says, "The entire VA hospital system is unprepared for the casualties of Iraq, especially the psychiatric casualties. A lot of vets are saying, 'This is our Katrina moment.' And they're right: this Administration governs badly because it doesn't care very much about governing."

"His hyper-partisanship has proved to be a travesty of governance and a comprehensive failure," Klein says of Bush. "I've tried to be respectful of the man and the office, but the three defining sins of the Bush Administration are congenital... They're not likely to change.

"[I]t is increasingly difficult," concludes Klein, "to imagine yet another two years of slow bleed with a leader so clearly unfit to lead."

Klein's full Time column is available at this link.

Western media's inexcusable behavior in the case of captive British sailors

by Daniel M Pourkesali (source: CASMII) April 4, 2007

Iran's sudden release of 15 Britons arrested 2 weeks ago in the disputed territorial waters inside the Persian Gulf took many in the West by surprise and sucked the wind out of warmongers sail who had used the event to continue their demonization of Iran as a pariah state. Of course following the release of the sailors yesterday, the ever compliant and predictable major U.S. news media dropped the story like a hot sack of potatoes. After all, portrayal of Iran as anything other than an outlaw nation deserving membership in the 'Axis of Evil' club does not bode well with the aims of their 'special interest' controlled masters.

Republican lawmaker meets Syria's Assad 2 hours, 24 minutes ago

President Bashar al-Assad met a Republican member of the U.S. Congress on Thursday, a day after Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) ended a visit to Syria that was criticized by the White House.

The official news agency said the meeting between Assad and Darrell Issa (news, bio, voting record), a member of the House Committee on Intelligence, discussed ways to improve relations between Washington and Damascus.

"It is difficult to isolate Syria which is pivotal to finding solutions to all issues in the region," the Syrian agency quoted Assad as saying. Issa, who is of Lebanese descent, also met Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem.

More than a dozen U.S. lawmakers have visited Damascus in the last four months and met Assad after the Iraq Study Group recommended to Republican President George W. Bush engaging with Damascus and Iran to help stabilize Iraq.

Pelosi urged Assad on Wednesday to end alleged Syrian support to rebels in Iraq and to use its influence with the Palestinian group Hamas.

Pelosi said holding a dialogue with the secular Syrian leader, whom the Bush administration has been trying to isolate, was in the U.S. interests.

The United States imposed sanctions on Syria in 2004, mainly for its support for Lebanon's Hezbollah and Hamas. Syria says the two groups are legitimate movements with broad domestic support resisting Israeli occupation.

Relations between Damascus and Washington further worsened after the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese premier Rafik al-Hariri in Beirut. A United Nations inquiry implicated Lebanese and Syrian security officials in the assassination.

Damascus denies involvement.

Air America pulls the plug on Sam Seder

Sadly, it's true this time: Friday the 13th of April is the last day for the Sam Seder Show as we know it.

Seder's been at the troubled Air America from the beginning. A close-in source says he'll probably take a Sunday afternoon show as a consolation prize.

"It's like a gold watch," she said. "Besides, they'd owe him a shit load of severance."

Who's next in the 9a-12p (East coast) time slot? Mark Green told the staff Thursday that the person hadn't been locked in, but should be by Monday or Tuesday.

"We think," he said brightly to the troubled assemblage, "you'll love the replacement."

It's been a death of a thousand cuts- not great for a slasher film plot, but serves a passive-aggressive (read chicken shit) executive AAR executive well.

In February, chief operating officer Scott Elberg, the network's corporate Jason Voorhees, and sixth CEO in three years, slashed Seder's budget and salary by 40%.

Elberg is a veteran radio guy, and was the last AAR man standing after the bankruptcy. Many however, say Elberg simply doesn't even believe in the liberal talk format.

"He voted for Bush in 2000 and 2004," staffers grumble.

Elberg never worked in a network or in syndication, they say, "He's a sales manager."

The whole deal is mysterious. It's not based on data because there isn't much- there's been no full book since Seder inherited in September from Jerry Springer, who'd bled ratings from that key anchoring position before he was finally fired.

It's not that Seder lost affiliates-of the twenty two stations Seder got from Springer, he lost nine when he took over- eight of which were lost because stations dumped the format, and the ninth, KTRC in Santa Fe actually flipped back after two months. He picked up a few more- his affiliates now number 16.

New owner, Mark Green reportedly told people he wanted "less substance" in the 9-ta-noon timeslot. Hence they offered it, to no avail to comedian Marc Maron, and tried unsuccessfully to get Jones Radio's Stephanie Miller with her comedic format.

Many think Elberg is enamored with Free FM "hot talk," the testosteronic, hyper-sexual audio foreplay like Anthony & Opie, or The Radio Chick except he have it with politics- a coupling of hot libs with hot libidos in sweaty, partisan, lizard-brain, 9-ta-noon, weekdaily orgies.

"I think he [Elberg] thought Maron could morph into that," says one staffer, "and when Maron balked, he'd gotten himself in a position he couldn't back off of- that there was something wrong with Sam's program."

Elberg really wanted Maron back on; and, says a staffer, he first tried to can Randi Rhodes, "but the minority partners refused to let him."

AAR may try to blame Sam Seder saying it's poor performance- not unlike the Bushies firing of the U.S. Attorneys for incompetence that turned out to be apocryphal.

But Air America's problems have never been with the product- Jerry Springer was the only real programming failure- the real fuck-up is that they never figured out how to monetize liberal talk.

It can be done because Jones Radio, (Stephanie Miller, Ed Shultz, Bill Press) is doing it.

Sam Seder, 40, is a talented guy- a comedian, writer, author, actor, film director, television producer-director and we're sure he'll never not make a good living. We sure hope he'll stay in radio- he's smart, glib, funny, and well-connected.

As listeners and progressives, Seder's firing portends worse for Air America than it does for him.

Oldest Perfumes Found on "Aphrodite's Island"

...
Belgiorno's team analyzed the remains of the mixing jugs and identified 14 fragrances native to the Mediterranean region used in perfume production.

Extracts of anise, pine, coriander, bergamot, almond, and parsley are among the ingredients the ancient perfume-makers preferred.

The team also discovered four "recipes" concocted with the different fragrances.

An experimental archaeology center in Blera, Italy, recreated these perfumes using techniques described by Pliny the Elder, a Roman author who died observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Plants and herbs were ground up and mixed with olive oil in clay jugs, then distilled in a clay apparatus, Belgiorno explained.

The smell of the perfumes is "a nice experience that re-creates in our mind a sort of ancestral reminder," she said in an email interview.

Hello gang! Hope you're all well. I've had a buddy from California visiting this week.

I've decide I'm heading out on the road for a few weeks. Gonna drive Phil back to L.A. and do a few things there. Then, some time around the left coast to work my brain out a little.

I've been getting a little bit too comfortable with the Lizard Brain lately.

I need some change and some fun.

I am outta here tomorrow AM and I will check back in when I get back

I hope good things happen while I'm gone.

Don't forget to remember the Kent State Massacre on May 4th.

Never forget the day America died.

The whole anti-Darwin/evolution thing is just a form of prostelization... as they try to convert us all.

We will miss you Sam. The nation owes you so much for what you have done these past three years. Someday there will be a statue on the Mall in Washington D.C. to the original AAR Krewe.

BULLS&*%T

The one final show I'm just now beginning to listen to religiously after Franken and Malloy's departure, is getting the axe.

AAR is going down the tube.

What are the circumstances behind this? A management decision? Family related?

Anonymous said...

Malloy and Sam - I don't get it. I'm so done...

Anonymous said...

why is it last week? Dude, too many have left man, I originally... listen, I think Ive had a long tour here too. Maybe its time for me to have a time out too. After all, congress and the senate have to do some of it themselves.

will your pow-wow have any negative effect in Sam working on other political talk networks? awkard and a damn shame. I don't think Sam belongs back in Hollywood.

The first book of the bible indicates that God set Adam and Eve on the path to sciene him/herself. Didn't God instruct
Adam to name all the creatures in creation and is not that the foundation of biology.

I download the show every day with my premium account. I'm really going to miss it! I will certainly listen to the Sunday show.

Sam should get a TV show on MSNBC or even CNN. Get Tucker and Beck off the air.

mr gilbert said...

sorry about all this depressing nonsense, sam, but yr professionalism on air in spite of it is quite commendable. i'll be podcasting the sunday show assuming it is a go.

I just want to know WHY????????

WHY? WHY? WHY?

New Owner said...

only a week of Sam left?

switching his show to 6 - 9 am (Seattle time) was a mistake, as well as our local liberal radio station dropping Sam's show.

What the hell is wrong with these managers? It's not a reaction to market, it's a self-fulfilled prophecy. If they take a decent show, with decent ratings, and stick it in a bad spot, then it's not going to do well. What do they expect?

I've got to get ready for work...

toniD said...

That's what I meant when I said up blog that i won't listen to the stream anymore.

I just sent a an email to AAR about this. Said I would not listen to AAR. Have no need to. I get what I want to listen to at my own local radio and I can stream Nova M.

AAR will lose alot of national listeners. I used to liten to AAR all day. Now I choose who I listen to and it won't be AAR.

Unknown said...

I'm dropping my premium membership too.... Sammy when one door closes another one opens.... How about Nova M Radio??? Talked to them?

Anonymous said...

>Maron....

Ditto on Maron.

He was my favorite next to Malloy and Franken. After he was given the axe via the lineup scramble sometime back, I particularly enjoyed it when he would occasionally fill in for Sam. For awhile now I was hoping they'd have second thoughts and give him another chance.

Sam, there is some really screwed up things at AAR, you are one of the gems...I know you will do well whatever you do. Thank you for your intelligent discourse and how entertaining you are. Not really going to listen to AAR much except Thom Hartmen sometimes....Back to Pacifica and the great Amy Goodman.
