Friday: The Casualest Casual Friday Ever

Sam's so casual today, he's strapping a heart monitor to himself to prove that even his heart rate is slowing down. As always, Sam will be taking your calls on all topics at 866-303-2270, and we'll have the SammyCam in full effect starting at 9:30 eastern. And you'll want to connect to that SammyCam, so you can feast your eyes on Janeane Garofalo, who'll come by in the third hour to hang out. Plus, the always dapper Joe Conason makes his regular Friday visit. Enjoy.

So I'll sign out, restart the computer, create a new account, and no matter what I put in for a new account, password, etc, I still show up as Lilith no matter what.

Plus, if I forget the password, they send the info for resetting it to the account I can't access because I forgot the password.

Sheesh, I think it's better to have these things NOT cross over, different accounts that don't share email addresses, etc.

I think Thomm should offer Sam his local morning show in Portland. He could put more time into his national show that way and we could all still stream Sammy.

Portland would be a perfect fit for Sam, since he fly fishes. He could use his local power to help protect river rights here in Oregon. Well it is a nice dream anyway.

I too am done with Air America. I will listen to Randi and Sam if he is on Sunday's and that is it.

Your new prime minister (The Right Honourable Tony Blair, MP for the 97.85% of you who have until now been unaware that there is a world outside your borders) will appoint a minister for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire will be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed. Report: Terrorists Following U.S. Home After Iraq Withdrawal Is ‘Remote At Best’
When it comes to Iraq, a common refrain from President Bush and other stay-the-coursers is that “if we were to leave before the job is done, the enemy would follow us here.” For example, on March 6, Bush said:

The extremists are fighting to take control of Iraq so they can establish it as a base from which to overthrow moderate governments in the region, and plan new attacks on the American people. If we fail in Iraq, the enemy will follow us home.

A new report from McClatchy debunks Bush’s claim. Here’s what the survey of military and diplomatic analysts found:

U.S. military, intelligence and diplomatic experts in Bush’s own government say the violence in Iraq is primarily a struggle for power between Shiite and Sunni Muslim Iraqis seeking to dominate their society, not a crusade by radical Sunni jihadists bent on carrying the battle to the United States.

Foreign-born jihadists are present in Iraq, but they’re believed to number only between 4 percent and 10 percent of the estimated 30,000 insurgent fighters - 1,200 to 3,000 terrorists - according to the Defense Intelligence Agency and a recent study by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a center-right research center.

“Attacks by terrorist groups account for only a fraction of insurgent violence,” said a February DIA report.

While acknowledging that terrorists could commit a catastrophic act on U.S. soil at any time - whether U.S. forces are in Iraq or not - the likelihood that enemy combatants from Iraq might follow departing U.S. forces back to the United States is remote at best, experts say.

One U.S. intelligence official quoted in the article points out that “the war in Iraq isn’t preventing terrorist attacks on America. If anything, that - along with the way we’ve been treating terrorist suspects - may be inspiring more Muslims to think of us as the enemy.”

So, the danger isn’t that leaving Iraq will bring more terrorism to the U.S., but that staying there will.

Pelosi: Bush administration threw a tantrum. The New York Times reports, via Mahablog:

Ms. Pelosi, in a telephone interview from Lisbon on Friday, said she could not account for the Bush administration’s assault, which she at one point equated to a tantrum. (She said her children were teasing her about Mr. Cheney’s accusation of bad behavior.) Defending her trip, Ms. Pelosi said that members of Congress had a responsibility to play a role in national security issues and that they needed to be able to gather information on their own, and not be dependent on the White House.

“I am used to the administration; nothing surprises me,” she said. “Having said that, I hope we can have the opportunity to convey to the president what we saw.”

Proud Active Duty Troops Speaking Out Against Iraq War
San Francisco Chronicle | April 7, 2007 10:52 AM

Mike Ergo is a 23-year-old honorably discharged Marine who fought in Fallujah. A tattoo on the inside of his left forearm depicts the first insurgent he killed in Iraq. A tattoo on his right arm reads: "Born to Fight." He loves the Marines, is proud of what he and his colleagues did overseas and is on inactive ready reserve through July 2009.

Yet a few weeks ago, the Walnut Creek native marched near the front of the anti-war demonstration that rolled through San Francisco. Yeah, he said, it felt odd to march among the 9/11 conspiracy theorists and socialists. Still, Ergo said he'd march again to underscore his opposition to U.S. foreign policy in Iraq and would try to bring more than the handful of Iraq War veterans who demonstrated with him last month.

Dead Dogs Don't Bleed

How Giuliani Lost America

By ALEXANDER COCKBURN

In the aftermath of 9/11/2001 New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani seemed as sure a bet as you could hope for as the Republican candidate destined to seek the White House in 2008. He rallied his city amid the rubble of the Twin Towers. His, not Bush's, was the firm voice of resolve. ... read on

http://counterpunch.org/cockburn04072007.html

clip:

"According to Patricia Feral, president of the Connecticut-based Friends of Animals, quoted on the New York Post online, which broke the story earlier this week, U.S. Surgical's reps did sales-demonstration stapling on hundreds of dogs through the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Feral says the dogs were "either put to death following the sales demonstrations because they can't re cover from them, or they die during them." The stapling had to be done on live dogs because, as one US Surgical CEO put it back in the 1980s, "A dead dog doesn't bleed. You need to have real blood-flow conditions, or you get a false sense of security." Giuliani's campaign spokesman declined comment on the charges about Judi's hands-on role." ....

Mrs. Sam Seder reveals truth about Cuban Revolution

Finally, an end to the imperialist propaganda about the Cuban Revolution, as Nicole Cattell - wife of Air America host and progressive icon Sam Seder - offers the documentary REVOLUC!ON (English: REVOLUTION). It airs on WNET in New York City next Tuesday, so at least a few thousand people will be enlightened:

sam sederFor more than a century, Cuba has dared to defy the "Yankee imperialists" 90 miles to its north. Since the triumph of Fidel Castro’s revolution, Cuba has also dared to dream of realizing a utopian society. Yet despite the revolution's many achievements, such as providing health care and education to nearly all Cubans, the cost has been severe—a matter of life and death for thousands of Cubans and the exile of thousands more. Those who remain on the island have suffered limits to their individual freedoms as well as the effects of crippling economic sanctions. To some, the revolution is a celebrated success. To others, it is a dictatorship. And to many more, it falls somewhere in between. With Cuba on the brink of radical transformation and the U.S. embargo clearly outdated, it is necessary to form a new way of understanding the Cuban revolution which transcends the overly simplistic pro-Castro versus anti-Castro dialogue. Through the work of five photographers, REVOLUCION offers a multi-faceted vision of the rise and fall of the revolutionary dream in Cuba.

Via this Huffington Post post from Steve Clemons, a fellow with the Soros-funded New America Foundation. The picture is from him as well. He also passes along the news - of interest to about 10 or 20 people - that Seder will be leaving the network next Friday, the 13th.

Mexico City Explores Wireless Internet

The city's new mayor said he hopes to offer high-speed wireless Internet to all 8.7 million residents of this sprawling metropolis, even as it struggles to supply basic services such as water and electricity.

Marcelo Ebrard signed an agreement Monday with China's ZTE Corp. to set up wireless broadband "hotspots" linking schools, government offices and the city's thousands of surveillance cameras.

"The city government is giving this project the highest priority," Ebrard said, adding that the project will get off the ground within months.

Speaking later to reporters, Ebrard said he hopes the service can quickly be expanded citywide.

Immigration Protest Fueled By Bush Plan

Organizers expect several thousand people at an immigrant rights rally on Saturday, saying many illegal immigrants are angry about a White House plan that would grant them work visas but require them to return home and pay hefty fines to become legal U.S. residents.

Immigrant rights advocates say many of the area's illegal immigrants feel betrayed by President Bush, who they had long considered an ally.

"People are really upset," said Juan Jose Gutierrez, president of Los Angeles-based Latino Movement USA, one of several organizers of Saturday's rally. "For years, the president spoke in no uncertain terms about supporting immigration reform ... then this kind of plan comes out and people are so frustrated."

The White House's draft plan, leaked last week, calls for a new "Z" visa that would allow illegal immigrant workers to apply for three-year work permits. They would be renewable indefinitely, but would cost $3,500 each time.

To get a permit and become legal permanent residents, illegal immigrants would have to return to their home country, apply at a U.S. embassy or consulate to re-enter legally and pay a $10,000 fine.

Spanish-language papers want Gonzales to resign. The daily La Opinión in Los Angeles and the Chicago weekly La Raza argue in a common editorial that Alberto Gonzales should resign. ‘The firing of the U.S. attorneys is sufficient cause for doubting his capacity for distinguishing his loyalty to President George W. Bush from his duty to citizens,’ the editorial says. Another Spanish-language column in the Chicago paper Hoy:

Gonzales’ ascent was “a double triumph,” Muñoz wrote: “Not only was he was the first Latino attorney general, but he was the first Latino to occupy one of the four most important seats in the presidential cabinet.”

But with many in Congress calling for his resignation as a result of the U.S. attorney firings, the columnist added, “Latino leadership needs to join” in that demand. “Gonzales not only has let down the community — he’s let down the nation,” Muñoz…wrote.

Justice Kennedy casts deciding votes By MARK SHERMAN, Associated Press Writer
Sat Apr 7, 12:21 PM ET

Justice Anthony Kennedy has become the object of his colleagues' attention on a Supreme Court with four reliably conservative votes and four dependably liberal.

Six cases before the Supreme Court this term have come down to 5-4 votes. Kennedy, alone, was in the majority every time.

Two cases last week — including one the court turned down — highlighted his pivotal role in shaping just about any matter of consequence before the justices.

It is his vote that could decide pending cases on abortion and school integration, as well.

In a victory for environmentalists in the first Supreme Court case on global warming, Kennedy showed he can frustrate conservatives who hoped the court would move firmly to the right with two appointees of President Bush on board.

A setback for Guantanamo detainees, in the other case, demonstrated that the court's conservative and liberal blocs must lean toward the middle or risk losing Kennedy's vote and, thus, a majority.

"When you have a 5-4 majority, it's a majority you can lose," said Pepperdine University law professor Douglas Kmiec.

Like Lewis Powell and Sandra Day O'Connor before him, Kennedy has become the court's "swing justice," a term he dislikes because he says it implies vacillation.

Yet the limited evidence so far this term shows how well the phrase fits.

Did you hear about Don Imus latest racist remarks? Imus has done this before.

April 6, 2007

(CBS) Talk show host Don Imus apologized Friday for remarks he made about the Rutgers University women's basketball team on his syndicated radio show April 4.

He had referred to the team, whose players are mostly African-American, as "nappy-headed hos" on Wednesday's program.

Imus and his crew were discussing the Tennessee's Lady Vols' 59-46 win over Rutgers' Scarlet Knights for the NCAA women's championship the night before.

The often-controversial talker went on to say that the players on Tennessee's team were "all cute girls." His producer, Bernard McGuirk, then referenced Spike Lee's film "School Daze" by comparing the two teams to the film's fictional college cliques divided by skin color known as "jigaboos" and "wannabes."

"(I) Want to take a moment to apologize for an insensitive and ill-conceived remark we made the other morning referring to the Rutgers women's basketball team," Imus said Friday. "It was completely inappropriate, and we can understand why people were offended. Our characterization was thoughtless and stupid, so, and we're sorry."

How Bush Is Breaking The Army
By: Nicole Belle @ 4:31 PM - PDT The Democratic Policy Committee has released a following report: Overstretched and Under Strain: Bush Administration Mismanagement of Our Military Leaves Us Less Capable of Responding to Threats at Home and Around the World, that details how Bush Administration is breaking our Army.

The Bush Administration's flawed Iraq policies, including its failure to send in enough troops to secure the peace, its failure to advance a comprehensive strategy for victory, and its failure to anticipate and plan for a protracted conflict, along with its inadequate funding of our military - have dangerously overstretched our armed forces. The Administration's record of mismanagement has resulted in critical equipment and training shortfalls; forced repeated deployments and extended deployments for U.S. forces; led to recruiting and retention challenges; and left our country without a strategic reserve. Today, many Army units are on their third or even fourth tour in Iraq or Afghanistan, while non-deployed units face significant shortfalls in readiness. Military leaders warn that the current pace of operations and reduced readiness of U.S. military forces is limiting our ability to respond to threats to our security and crises that may emerge both at home and around the world.

Keep reading the documentation the DPC has compiled, it's stunningly sad.

Matt Sanchez wasn't always so handsome:

"Many people have been shocked to find out that conservative ex-military man, Matt Sanchez, is a former 'actor' in adult films. One of the more humorous aspects his personality is his endorsement of 'facercise', which he credits on a Geocities.com website (click here) (complete with photos!) as 'fixing' his droopy eyes. I beg to differ. It looks like a brow lift to me, check out the much smoother forehead in the after photo. There was nothing wrong with his original 'droopy' eyes, in fact, in they were so hideous, I doubt he would have been so popular in adult films."

"How Specialist Town Lost His Benefits" by Joshua Kors

Link:

http://www.thenation.com/doc/20070409/kors

Excerpts:

A six-month investigation has uncovered multiple cases in which soldiers wounded in Iraq are suspiciously diagnosed as having a personality disorder, then prevented from collecting benefits. The conditions of their discharge have infuriated many in the military community, including the injured soldiers and their families, veterans' rights groups, even military officials required to process these dismissals.

They say the military is purposely misdiagnosing soldiers like Town and that it's doing so for one reason: to cheat them out of a lifetime of disability and medical benefits, thereby saving billions in expenses.

Armstrong has been counseling traumatized veterans for more than twenty years at the San Francisco VA; most recently he is the co-author of "Courage After Fire: Coping Strategies for Troops Returning From Iraq and Afghanistan and Their Families."

"Personality disorder is a diagnosis I'm very cautious about," he says. "My question would be, has PTSD been ruled out? It seems to me that if it walks like a duck, looks like a duck, let's see if it's a duck before other factors are implicated."

Warning: Graphic Photos, so I will just post the article

http://www.haitiaction.net/News/HIP/1_21_7/1_21_7.html

HIP - Port au Prince, Haiti — A Cite Soleil community activist, Samuel Leconte, was arrested at gunpoint by Brazilian soldiers on Jan. 18th and was turned over to the Haitian police. The first questions posed to Mr. Leconte by the UN were whether he has information connecting former political prisoner Annette Auguste, aka So An, and exiled president Aristide to large demonstrations in the seaside shanty town of Cite Soleil. While Mr. Leconte has responded that he has no such information and that the demonstrations are taken at the initiative of the community, the information Mr. Leconte does possess is eyewitness testimony of the killings executed by UN forces in his community on December 22. 2006.

Weeks before his arrest, Mr. Leconte spoke at a funeral for the victims of what residents of Cite Soleil are calling a second massacre by UN military forces in their community. Mr. Leconte condemned the killings while sitting in front of a large banner that read "Thank you President Preval for this Christmas gift," an obvious reference to Preval's having reportedly approved the deadly raid. "They killed women, children and old people. They shot them like animals" states Mr. Leconte as he begins to weep into the microphone. He concluded, "They will never stop our demands for the return of President Aristide. We will keep demonstrating and will never stop until the land of Dessalines is truly free and independent!!" As of this writing, Mr. Leconte is being held without charges by the Haitian police in the notorious Delmas 33 prison which is called Fort Dimanche, alluding to a former prison run by the Duvalier dictatorship.

According to residents of Cite Soleil, UN forces attacked their neighborhood in the early morning hours of Dec. 22, 2006 and killed more than 30 people including women and children. For many this was a repeat of UN military operations on July 6, 2005 when more than 26 people were killed in a successful assassination attempt on Emmanuel "Dred" Wilmer and four of his closest followers. Wilmer was openly hostile to the UN military occupation of his country and opposed the ouster of the constitutional president Jean-Bertrand Aristide. He led armed resistance and inspired others to do the same against the brutal Haitian police and the irreparably corrupt legal system.

This time the target was a purported kidnapping gang led by a young man named Belony. The military operation was said to have been personally sanctioned by President Rene Preval, who was elected last year with support from Aristide's Lavalas movement. Tens of thousands of Lavalas supporters paralyzed the capital for more than a week to challenge the 76 million dollar UN-sponsored elections fiasco. The UN-backed Provisional Election Council(CEP) attempted a ballot counting fraud meant to keep Preval from assuming office.

The irony is that the attack on Dec. 22 seems to have been triggered, not by a surge in kidnappings as claimed by the UN, but by another massive demonstration of Lavalas supporters that began in Cite Soleil. About ten thousand people demonstrated a few days before for the return of president Aristide in a clear condemnation of what they called the foreign military occupation of their country. These huge demonstrations are not to be confused with smaller protests of the so-called "student demonstrations" of the "testicles up your derriere" movement or GNB that helped to oust Aristide on Feb. 29, 2004. The protesters in Cite Soleil were offered a far different treatment by the UN than the so-called "students."

Footage taken by HIP videographers shows unarmed civilians dying as a result of indiscriminate gunfire from UN forces on December 22, 2006. Although the UN denied firing from helicopter gunships, an unidentified 28 year-old man dies on camera stating that he was shot in the abdomen from a circling UN helicopter raining death upon those below. This is not the first time the UN has denied murdering unarmed civilians in Cite Soleil. The occupation force also denied killing unarmed civilians on July 6, 2005. Eloufi Boulbars, a UN spokesperson stated on July 8, 2005, "We saw five people killed, that's what we could count. Armed bandits who had tried to resist were either killed or wounded." Documentary evidence finally forced the UN to admit that unarmed civilians had been killed by UN forces despite their attempts to cover it up.

The scene December 22, 2006 was not all that different with the UN feeding the corporate media a story of military intervention against kidnappers and denying once again the disproportionate use of force resulting in the heavy loss of life among unarmed civilians. Another similarity was the UN's utter disregard in planning for civilian causualties. As in July 2005, not a single medical unit accompanied the UN forces as residents hit by indiscriminate and sustained gunfire bled to death in the middle of the street or managed to crawl back to their homes to die in the arms of their families.

"I couldn't count all the victims," states one survivor who asked to remain anonymous due to fears for her safety. "They came in shooting. Look at that pregnant woman they just shot. Look at that young man. Are we all bandits? Are we all kidnappers?" Annette Auguste, who was a political prisoner in Haiti for more than two years added, "We saw young men and women gunned down by UN forces in Cite Soleil. Young people shot dead . Were they all kidnappers too?"

More than three hours of video footage and a large selection of digital photos, illustrate more than words ever could what the UN is doing in Haiti. The wounded and dying on the video tape all express horror and confusion at the reasons UN forces shot at them. A 16 year-old young man asks why UN forces shot him as he clearly realizes he is going to die. Less than an hour later we see his lifeless corpse replace what once was an animated and articulate young man. HIP Founding Editor Kevin Pina commented, "It is clear that this represents an act of terror against the community. This video evidence shows clearly that the UN stands accused, once again, of targeting unarmed civilians in Cite Soleil. There can be no justification for using this level of force in the close quarters of those neighborhoods. It is clear that the UN views the killing of these innocents as somehow acceptable to their goal of pacifying this community. Every demonstration, no matter how peaceful, is seen as a threat to their control if it includes demands for the return of Aristide to Haiti. In that context it is difficult to continue to view the UN mission as an independent and neutral force in Haiti. They apparently decided sometime ago it was acceptable to use military force to alter Haiti's political landscape to match their strategic goals for the Haitian people."

The people of Cite Soleil now view president Preval as having the blood of innocent victims on his hands along with UN Special Envoy to Haiti Edmond Mulet and the recently replaced Brazilian General Jose Elito Carvalho de Siqueira. In the minds of the survivors they now join the ranks of General Heleno Ribera, former UN Envoy Juan Gabriel Valdes and the former US-installed prime minister Gerard Latortue all of who are implicated in ordering and covering up the first massacre of July 6, 2005.

The Conservative Nanny State

How the Wealthy Use the Government to Stay Rich and Get Richer

by Dean Baker, published May 2006

"In his new book, economist Dean Baker debunks the myth that conservatives favor the market over government intervention. In fact, conservatives rely on a range of “nanny state” policies that ensure the rich get richer while leaving most Americans worse off. It’s time for the rules to change. Sound economic policy should harness the market in ways that produce desirable social outcomes – decent wages, good jobs and affordable health care."

Call Bush a liar when he lies
by Joe Sudbay (DC) · 4/08/2007 10:19:00 AM ET

Bush doesn't think anyone in the media will actually call him a liar even when he lies.

Thank you, Frank Rich:
As if to confirm we’re in the last throes, President Bush threw any remaining caution to the winds during his news conference in the Rose Garden that same morning. Almost everything he said was patently misleading or an outright lie, a sure sign of a leader so entombed in his bunker (he couldn’t even emerge for the Washington Nationals’ ceremonial first pitch last week) that he feels he has nothing left to lose.

Incredibly, he chided his adversaries on the Hill for going on vacation just as he was heading off for his own vacation in Crawford. Then he attacked Congress for taking 57 days to “pass emergency funds for our troops” even though the previous, Republican-led Congress took 119 days on the same bill in 2006. He ridiculed the House bill for “pork and other spending that has nothing to do with the war,” though last year’s war-spending bill was also larded with unrelated pork, from Congressional efforts to add agricultural subsidies to the president’s own request for money for bird-flu preparation.

Mr. Bush’s claim that military equipment would be shortchanged if he couldn’t sign a spending bill by mid-April was contradicted by not one but two government agencies. A Government Accountability Office report faulted poor Pentagon planning for endemic existing equipment shortages in the National Guard. The Congressional Research Service found that the Pentagon could pay for the war until well into July. Since by that point we’ll already be on the threshold of our own commanders’ late-summer deadline for judging the surge, what’s the crisis?

The president then ratcheted up his habitual exploitation of the suffering of the troops and their families — a button he had pushed five days earlier when making his six-weeks-tardy visit to pose for photos at scandal-ridden Walter Reed. “Congress’s failure to fund our troops on the front lines will mean that some of our military families could wait longer for their loved ones to return from the front lines,” he said. “And others could see their loved ones headed back to the war sooner than they need to.”

Dean tells Bush to grow up
by Joe Sudbay (DC) · 4/07/2007 04:55:00 PM ET

Same old rhetoric from Bush today in his radio address. But, the Democrats are on the offense. We're all sick of the games that George Bush is playing while soldiers continue to die. We're also tired of the lies. It's time for George Bush to grow up and act like a responsible President:
In response, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean called on Bush and congressional Republicans to "stop trying to bully their way through this and work with Democrats to end the war."

"It's time for the president to show respect to the American people, who voted overwhelmingly to leave Iraq," Dean in the Democrats' weekly radio address.

Bill Donohue Thought South Park Parody Was “Hilarious”
By: SilentPatriot @ 7:02 PM - PDT On Wednesday's South Park, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone parodied the Catholic League's Bill Donohue as a power-hungry Catholic Church official who overthrows Pope Benedict and jails Jesus for going against the Church. On last night's Scarborough Country, Donohue reacted to the show in a very surprising way given his track record of over-exaggerated outrage and violent rhetoric.

Download (2042) | Play (1914) Download (866) | Play (1401)

"Maybe I do come across too tough on TV. I thought it was hilarious and our staff thought it was hilarious. I said, listen, I said I have no defense except I'm gonna go with it."

Donohue's official statement can be found here. His "I have no defense" reaction speaks to the sheer genius of South Park. Anyone who watched the show knows they hit him hard for sometimes acting un-Christian, but the moral of the episode was one with which he couldn't have possibly disagreed. In case you missed it, check the ComedyCentral schedule here. It'll be rerun tonight through Monday.

Ford CEO saves President Bush’s life. Ford CEO Alan Mulally tells reporters that he had to run over and stop President Bush from plugging an electrical cord into the hydrogen tank of a hybrid car at the White House last week.

Ford wanted to give the Commander-in-Chief an actual demonstration of the innovative vehicle, so the automaker arranged for an electrical outlet to be installed on the South Lawn and ran a charging cord to the hybrid. However, as Mulally followed Bush out to the car, he noticed someone had left the cord lying at the rear of the vehicle, near the fuel tank.

“I just thought, ‘Oh my goodness!’ So, I started walking faster, and the President walked faster and he got to the cord before I did. I violated all the protocols. I touched the President. I grabbed his arm and I moved him up to the front,” Mulally said. “I wanted the president to make sure he plugged into the electricity, not into the hydrogen This is all off the record, right?”

Dennis Ross's Mythology
Posted by Scott MacLeod

Let it be remembered that in 2007, the United States missed what may be a last chance in many years to negotiate a final peace settlement between the Israelis and the Arabs. That failure, if it happens, will keep the Middle East on boil for more years to come, leading to further bloodshed between Israelis and Palestinians, probably between Hizballah and Israel, and possibly between Palestinians themselves. In such a climate, Iran's nuclear ambitions, the fallout from the Iraq invasion and the regrouping of Al Qaeda may push us into another global crisis.

Not that Condi Rice isn't trying. Overcoming an incomprehensible six-year freeze on Bush administration engagement in the peace process, she has made three trips to the region in three months and managed to get Prime Minister Olmert and President Abbas thinking again about "final status" issues like the shape of a Palestinian state and the fate of Jerusalem. Yet, it is becoming apparent that her efforts lack a big vision or a commitment on the part of President Bush, which may amount to a historic abrogation of U.S. responsibility given the significant opportunity offered in the Arab League's occupied-land-for-full-peace initiative of 2002 relaunched at the Riyadh summit last week.

American leadership is crucial, yet Bush refuses to take a clear stand on what a fair and just Israeli-Palestnian settlement should look like, and then use America's influence in the region and the world to sell that bold vision to the concerned parties. Unfortunately, this fits into a well-established Washington pattern, perhaps best exemplified by the ubiquitous views of Dennis Ross, the U.S.'s main Middle East envoy between 1989-2000.

Over at the Goebbels network (home of the “Pelosi’s Syria Visit a Felony?” headline), George Snufalufagus hosts Carl Levin, and Krazy Jon Kyl, plus John and Teresa Kerry on their new book “This Moment on Earth,” (also known as, “Hey, if I write a pro-envionemnt book, will everybody like me the way they like Al Gore again?” and Walter Isaacson on Einstein’s faith (and presumably how he’d probaly not have tried to ban science in schools).

Wolf Blitzer’s Late Emission includes impotent Republican Sen. Arlen Specter, disgusting Republican Sen. Joey Lieberman, Tommy “I got about as much chance becoming President as Mike Huckabee” Thompson, and Vincent Gardenia in drag, Madeleine Albright.

Later, on 60 Minutes, Scott Pelley talks to straight talkin’ (straight out of his ass), brave walkin’ (as long as he’s guarded by 100 soldiers and a few attack helicopters), maverick John McCain. Then Morley Safer doesn a story on Rich Berman, the brave lobbyist who crusades against such evils as animal rights, healthy food, labor unions, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Finally, Steve Kroft does a story on success of the French Nuclear Power program (all that, and fast trains too? Bloody frogs).

But of course, we need to remember what’s truly important on this most sacred of days. The Sopranos return tonight at 9:00 on HBO.

Rahall: Pelosi Personally Told Bush Of Syria Trip And He Did Not Object »
Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV), who traveled last week with Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) as part of her delegation to the Middle East, said this morning on C-Span that Pelosi told Bush of the trip to Syria a day before they left, and Bush did not object.

Rahall said, “The Speaker had met with President Bush in the halls of the U.S. Capitol just the day before we left and mentioned to him that we were going to Syria. No response at all from the President.”

Watch it:

Despite the White House’s public rhetoric that the trip was a “bad idea,” President Bush “did not tell her not to go, nor did the State Department tell us not to go,” Rahall said. “The State Department was certainly aware of our traveling to Syria and our full itinerary. And there were State Department officials in every meeting that we had on this codel. So that is all hogwash as far as I’m concerned.”

LIEberman should just declare himself a republican and get it over with. Is he afraid his state may recall him if he does?

If the dems allow him to caucus with them then they are aloowing the enemy within.

From the "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss" file comes Melina with a post largely dealing with Air America shooting itself in the face again by firing Sam Seder(and don't kid yourself, this so-called Sunday afternoon slot is the Miltonization of Sam Seder. Sam, if you have a red stapler, you know what the deal is.) Now with parrots, dogs, eggs, and for some strange reason, an extremely disturbing photo of a container of 50 lab mice that look strangely dead.

"Mulally told journalists at the New York auto show that he intervened to prevent President Bush from plugging an electrical cord into the hydrogen tank of Ford's hydrogen-electric plug-in hybrid at the White House last week.
"I just thought, 'Oh my goodness!' So, I started walking faster, and the President walked faster and he got to the cord before I did. I violated all the protocols. I touched the President. I grabbed his arm and I moved him up to the front," Mulally said. "I wanted the president to make sure he plugged into the electricity, not into the hydrogen This is all off the record, right?""

---------------------------------------

Mulaly should be charged with treason based on the fact that he aided and abetted an enemy of the state - Bush. He should have just let the idiot blow himself up right there on the White House lawn.

Fox Calls Out Gingrich Hypocrisy on Pelosi Trip to Syria »
Today on Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace asked former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) about his views on the Pelosi-led delegation to Syria. Gingrich criticized Pelosi, saying, “I think it’s very important not to have two foreign policies, and I think it’s very dangerous for America to do what Speaker Pelosi did.”

Wallace confronted Gingrich with public comments he made as Speaker that clashed with Clinton administration policy before and during his travels abroad to China and Israel in the 1990’s. (Glenn Greenwald first documented those statements HERE.) Gingrich said at the time:

We will defend Taiwan, period. [3/31/97]

I think it’s wrong for the American Secretary of State to become the agent for the Palestinians [3/12/98]

Gingrich responded to the Taiwan comment stating, “What I said in China was U.S. policy.” But Wallace quickly refuted him: “Not according to the Clinton administration.” Gingrich then attempted to defend his statements criticizing Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and said, “I think at the time she was taking steps that were very, very pro-Palestinian.” Watch it:

Dear Hasbro,

I recently purchased the game Hungry, Hungry Hippo's for my son.

It was a game I enjoyed playing in my childhood.

I was disapointed to discover that the Chinese have ruined the game. It is poorly made and is likely to fall apart within the day.

The HUngry Hungry Hippo game of my childhood lasted forever, and we pounded on that thing forever. Thanks for ruining my Holiday....PS
the pink Hippo is already broken

Sincerely,
Conbo

Happy Easter from Tom Delay

On this Easter Sunday, Jesus is apparently not the only one who is risen. Tom Delay, the Prince of Darkness, is back from political exile with a fiery new book of right-wing rage. In it, the Hammer hammers friend (he described Texas GOP colleague Dick Armey as "drunk with ambition") and foe alike "(liberals have finally joined the ranks of scoundrels like Hitler").

As you enjoy this Easter Sunday with your respective faith, family and favorite chocolate bunny, take a moment to contemplate the demented words of the indicted former House Majority Leader on the day of his booking last year: "let people see Christ through me."

Here, then, is a flashback to my piece from last March, "Tom Delay's Christ Complex."

I've just caught up on the news about the end of the show after listening to the podcast and Sam mentioning it obliquely. If this is true-

In February, chief operating officer Scott Elberg, the network's corporate Jason Voorhees, and sixth CEO in three years, slashed Seder's budget and salary by 40%.
Elberg is a veteran radio guy, and was the last AAR man standing after the bankruptcy. Many however, say Elberg simply doesn't even believe in the liberal talk format.
"He voted for Bush in 2000 and 2004," staffers grumble.-
http://blatherwatch.blogs.com/talk_radio/2007/04/air_america_pul.html

It is a travesty, slowly the dead corporate hand is smothering what AAR set out to be. This is a contemptible way to treat Sam who has become the best broadcaster going. Eejits.

before I'm off to my usual...whatever it is I do with all of this time that seems to fall away....I want everyone to know that the Air America email system goes by a pattern of first initial and last name followed by @AirAmerica.com , so the new programmer, David Bernstein, can be reached at dbernstein@airamerica.com . Feel free to write to whoever you want to over there and let them know how you feel about the new "programming" decisions....I expect that we soon will be seeing audio home shopping, 6-10 hours of Thommm Hartmannn (smart but boring!) and a little Randi Rhodes on the side just to mix it up, then another 4-8 hour block of The Mark Green Show....
Haven't we suffered enough? We're fighting for our lives here, people!
I would love to be wrong about this, but every turn has uncovered another dark revelation about this deal ...I'm already disappointed beyond reason...and the whole thing is indicative of what was the problem in the first place, which is this idea of following old programming plans and trying to make the thing profitable in a certain time frame...a time frame that isn't even supported by the old fashioned ideas of programming that they are using....WTF?? Pick something and stay with it, guys! Well, apparently the thing that they are picking is gonna be mediocre. I keep hearing this thing repeated on the internet that the Greens and/or programmer wanted something of less substance in Sam's time slot. Well, that indicates to me right away that these guys definitely never listened to Maron. If its less substance that they want, Maron's hilarious, densely empathetic, heavily political, and painfully personal, radio work would never make it....oh wait...it already worked in a morning slot! Ratings were going up on that day that they pulled the plug the first time!
