Catching Up

Still not back in the swing of things. I'm on quasi- Hiatus. But wanted to update you all.

1. The new blog will roll out within three weeks, maybe earlier. It will allow for sub blogs or diaries.

2. Seder on Sundays will debut in about a month.

3. I am starting to look real good in the Gonzo is GONZO pool. My favorite moment from the hearings yesterday was watching Lindsey Graham (sam gets up closes the closet door) offer Gonzo an incredibly lame alibi (paraphrasing)..."US Atty's got put on this firing list becasue they were having personality conflicts, isn't that the case?"

4. Abramoff continues to sing and now Renzi is reducing his workload.

While it's not criminal to be Republican, it's clear Republicanism is a gateway activity to crime.

Interesting that the absolutely outrageous call by Mccain to bomb iran is buried in the last paragraph as if theres an equivalence between a haircut and the death and destruction of a soverign nation (i will grant you that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is a kook who threatens the world but there ought to be other ways to get rid of him)

ours died a few years ago and i finally had to bring it down this winter. it has beautiful wood when milled up, with nice color and grain.

boy...! that sure insults the republicans starting to wake up and look around for alternatives! dam inaccurate language and conceptual framing there bud. absolutely guarenteed to shut off their reasoning faculties

talk about painting yourself in a corner! why are you alienenating people that way without needing to?

tell ya, the average repub has no idea why they are repubs except that their dad's were.

A new national poll shows “a third of Americans say global warming ranks as the world’s single largest environmental problem, double the number who gave it top ranking last year.” Seven in 10 Americans want federal action on global warming, and about half of those surveyed think the government should do “much more” than it is doing now.

A lot's been said so far about Attorney General Gonzales's testimony today. I've said plenty myself. The key though was the response from the committee's Republicans. You know that Sen. Coburn (R-OK), an extremely conservative but not necessarily party-regular senator, told Gonzales he should resign. There was more though. Two other Republican senators, I think, basically told Gonzales that they weren't going to tell him to resign but that he should. That's my interpretation of Sens. Specter and Graham's statements, certainly. And you don't have to agree. But I think it's a fair one. And even Sen. Sessions (R-AL), who normally I'd expect to be signing the administration line, was pretty damning.

I think it's fair to say that Gonzales has lost the confidence of at least half the Republican senators on the committee. He's given people too many causes of termination to choose from. You can want him to go for subverting the federal justice system. Or if that's too much for you to handle you can say he should go for running Main Justice like some ungainly combination of a Young Republicans summer camp and Michael Brown's FEMA. And if even that creates too much collateral damage for you to deal with you can just say he should go for lying about everything that happened.

Plenty of reasons to go around.

The big news today is....

Alec Baldwin Loses It
by BooMan
Fri Apr 20th, 2007 at 06:15:54 AM EST

I don't think we do enough celebrity blogging around here. Alec Baldwin called his eleven year-old daughter a 'thoughtless little pig'? Wow!! That's not very nice.

An enraged Alec Baldwin unleashed a volcanic tirade of threats and insults on his 11-year-old daughter, Ireland, calling her a "thoughtless little pig," and bashing her mother Kim Basinger -- and TMZ has obtained the whole thing unfiltered and raw. And we've learned, a family law judge was so alarmed after hearing the tape, she has temporarily barred Baldwin from having any contact with his child.
After Ireland failed to answer her father's scheduled morning phone call from New York on April 11, Alec went berserk on her voice mail, saying "Once again, I have made an ass of myself trying to get to a phone," adding, "you have insulted me for the last time."

Switching his train of thought, Baldwin then exercised his incredible parenting skills and took a shot at his ex-wife, declaring, "I don't give a damn that you're 12-years-old or 11-years-old, or a child, or that your mother is a thoughtless pain in the ass who doesn't care about what you do." The irate Baldwin went on to say, "You've made me feel like s**t" and threatened to "straighten your ass out."

Now that is what I call an ugly divorce. What the hell is wrong with Baldwin? No wonder his daughter screens her calls. Sounds like time for a little rehab.

LINK

It's on all the MSM and I am sure that Limbaugh and the rest will make a point of this outburst, which I find repulsive, because he is a liberal. The skuttle is that Kim Basinger, his ex, leaked this.

Supreme Court To Put Another Dick In White House

Washington, D.C. - At the behest of Antonin Scalia, Chief Justice John Roberts has scheduled a meeting of the five most conservative justices for early next week in which they will select the next president of the United States.

Sources inside the Supreme Court have told Assimilated Press that the decision will surprise the public as none of the currently announced candidates are held in high esteem by the justices. Rudy Giuliani is seen as not being sufficiently anti-choice although Clarence Thomas did say that the former mayor of New York is better looking than Ann Coulter when dressed in drag and that he wouldn't toss him out of bed on a lonely night. For his part, John McCain is considered by the justices to be a politician without any core principles who couldn't even sell manure to barn full of hungry flies. And, it is a strongly held view that Mitt Romney simply can't be trusted because he doesn't believe in the same Jesus as the five most conservative members of the court.

Of course, all of the Democratic candidates are out of the question as the majority of the court has already made it clear in their Bush versus Gore decision that America is a Republican nation that relies on the literal interpretation of biblical law for guidance. As Justice Antonin Scalia is found of saying, "When I speak of the concept of Original Intent, I do not refer to the original intent of the Founding Fathers but rather the original intent of God as written in the Bible and interpreted by us five holy men in robes."

So, don't be shocked, when early next week, Justices Roberts, Scalia, Alito, Thomas and Kennedy select their favorite Republican, Dick Cheney, as the next President of the United States. In following recent precedent, Cheney will take the oath of office after the next presidential election but before all of the votes are counted

Diana Ross, Mary Wilson and the various members of The Supremes have sued John Roberts, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas for declaring Dick Cheney President of the United States. "They said that the "Supremes" have decided this. Well, there is only one The Supremes, and we're it and they're not", Ms. Wilson's explained.

Cindy Birdsong, a former member of The Supremes added, "The people don't love Dick Cheney. And, you know, you can't hurry love. If he wants to be president he'll just have to wait. Until the votes are counted."

Otis Williams, of The Temptations, agreed with the suit against the judges. "They gotta reach out. Cheney says he's gonna make me love him, but nobody's gonna make me do anything. If he wants to be president he can't be too proud to beg. Let him win in a fair election."

Asked if he thought there was a strong likelihood of a fair election in 2008, Mr. Williams said, "No. It's just my imagination, running away with me."

Okay Jenise. Sleep Well!

NBC Showed videos and photos that the shooter made. He sounds insane.
I guess they are all over the internet now.

The families of some of the kids are saying that those videos should not be shown, to honor the kids that died instead of giving time to the shooter. The Korean-Americans are shamed and scared that ther will be a backlash, just as the Arab-Americans were after 9/11. Doesn't say much about our society here in the US. But racism does play a part and those voices seem to be heard above all others.

Feeling better as long as it doesn't rain or the humidity isn't high. Thanks for asking. My knee, though, is really painful all the time. Trying to find insurance that doctors will accept. I have medicare but I need medigap and I don't qualify for that til I am 65.

What they are offering for disability isn't accepted by many doctors. It's a real pain. And I would have to quit my job in order to get medicaid and there are some doctors that won't accept medicaid.

Two US lawmakers seek to protect abortion rights
Published: Thursday April 19, 2007

Two US lawmakers introduced legislation Thursday aimed at codifying a woman's right to terminate a pregnancy, one day after the Supreme Court banned a controversial late-term abortion procedure.

The proposed law would codify abortion rights for the first time, said Democratic Representative Jerrold Nadler, who joined the effort launched by Senator Barbara Boxer.

The legislation "would bar government -- at any level -- from interfering with a woman's fundamental right to choose to bear a child, or to terminate a pregnancy," Nadler said.

"We can no longer rely on the Supreme Court to protect a woman's constitutional right to choose" he said.

"This Supreme Court may have gone out of the business of protecting women's rights; it is time that Congress stand up to the challenge."

A divided Supreme Court voted 5-4 Wednesday to uphold a 2003 law passed by Congress banning what critics call "partial birth abortion."

The bellwether ruling was a major victory for conservative forces in the United States, which have battled for decades to reverse the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision establishing a woman's legal right to terminate a pregnancy.

It is the first time the high court has upheld a ban of a specific abortion procedure since Roe v. Wade.

The fate of the legislation offered Thursday is unclear as Democratic leaders, who control Congress since January, did not promise a debate on the divisive issue.

speaking of 11 yr olds, yesterday one of the hood kids that age told me about getting raped. Me and Bgurl trying to figure out how to help.

family dysfunctional, kid afraid this will end up in serious violence if the truth comes out.

kid definitely does'nt want the cops in on it for several good reasons linked to the family situation. Mom has drug probs, her live in boyfriend drinks and has anger management probs. both actually likeable good people but living on the edge.

word got out in school, kid lied to the principal about what happened told em it was a minor incident, so that's a closed door or the kid thinks so at any rate.

kid has no religion so that route is out.

the kid is reaching out so that's to the good, tough and resilient nature to this one. i can counsel as a friend but anything else opens up a can of worms.

i don't think the kid is lying. the person that did the rape is blackmailing the kid to keep the kid quiet, dumping a guilt trip on the kid.

kids best friend is currently in a foster home, is out and about at 4 AM. another friend is 13 and pregnant...

ugly part is that this is fairly common everywhere and is usually hushed up and the kid ends up shouldering the guilt and blame for the rest of their life.

i want to bust the pedophile personally. kids afraid of going to a foster home as a result and rightfully so.

tough situation with no good official options.

News | Vermont Senate calls for impeachment of Bush, Cheney
By Shay Totten | Vermont Guardian

Posted April 20, 2007

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Senate this morning approved by a 16-9 margin a resolution calling on the U.S. House to launch impeachment proceedings of Pres. George W. Bush and Vice Pres. Dick Cheney.

The move comes just days after nearly 150 people from around Vermont converged on Montpelier to urge lawmakers to pass such a resolution out of the House and Senate. The emotionally-charged, 40-minute meeting left backers hopeful that something could happen this session.

Today’s resolution was introduced by Senate Pres. Pro Tem Peter Shumlin, D-Windham, and Sen. Jeannette White, D-Windham. The process began last night when Senate Majority Leader Dick McCormick, D-Windsor, introduced a resolution. However, his resolution did not include Cheney. The resolution by Shumlin and White did include Cheney.

Three Democrats — Sen. Dick Sears, D-Bennington, Sen. Dick Mazza, D-Chittenden/Grand Isle, and Sen. Bill Carris, D-Rutland — joined six Republicans in voting against the resolution. One Republican — Sen. George Coppenrath, R-Caledonia, was absent at the time of the vote.

Rep. Dave Zuckerman, P-Burlington, will spend today and Tuesday collecting signatures from House members to introduce an identical resolution in the chamber.

“We will take the same language the Senate passed today, collect signatures today and Tuesday, and turn it in Tuesday afternoon, which gives people around the state time to call their representatives and ask them to sign it; we would then have it on the calendar for Wednesday and the speaker will either let it be voted on or have it sent to committee,” said Zuckerman. “In respect to the senate action, many of us are quite pleased they took the vote, but it’s clear that it only happened because citizens got involved.”

Impeachment backers were thrilled with the move, and now turn their attention to the House, where an impeachment resolution has been sitting in the House Judiciary Committee for weeks.

Nice post.

On another topic, the new morning guy is pretty boring/lame.

I don't get it. If they *knew* they were going to replace you, at least they should have picked somebody interesting. This whole thing smells.

I agree with other posters that this whole week felt wierd without Sam's voice. I took a walk on the wild side and listened to the Alex Jones show for 3 or 4 days, just to see what the paranoid-wacko-sect of the right wing was talking about this week.

Aside from the bizarre rantings about how the Va-Tech shootings were a government black-op, it was refreshing to hear somebody on the air expressing their views with passion. I found myself downright laughing if I pictured the DJ wearing a tinfoil hat when talking into the mike. So, it was actually kinda fun.

It was certainly more entertaining than the AAR morning guy. And... that is a depressing thought.

Now, I don't know if I can stand any more than a week of Alex Jones, but it shows that AAR has no idea how to entertain an audience.

E. coli conservatism is live and in concert at a news conference over tainted pet food.
Stonewalling At The FDA

Excerpt:
The obvious question came. We already know that Natural Brands is only one of five pet food manufacturers to which the suspect rice protein was shipped. What are the other four companies whose products might be poisoned? "Right now we're in the middle of that investigation so we're not releasing the names." Why not? Because "we don't know what if any products have been made" using poisoned ingredients.

A follow-up: "Shouldn't consumers have that information now so we can use it in our decision-making processes?"

Good question, for which the answer was: "We're not aware of all the products that have been made." Captain Elder contributed: "We don't have complete information.... We're not going to share information that is speculative, that is preliminary."

But it wasn't speculative. It wasn't preliminary. They know who these companies are. But they were protecting them, instead of the public, on the off chance that they didn't happen to put the poisons they'd taken deliver of in their product.

"I know this has sort of been asked," another reporter pleaded, but why can't the FDA tell people which four companies had taken delivery of poisoned pet food ingredients before Fido finds out the hard way?

AFL-CIO Goes After 6 Verizon Directors
Campaign Tests Shareholder Rights

NEW YORK, April 19 -- The AFL-CIO has launched a campaign to unseat six members of Verizon Communications' compensation committee, saying they rewarded chief executive Ivan G. Seidenberg with generous pay even as the company's stock languished.

The push to organize a "no" vote at Verizon's annual meeting May 3 is among the first efforts by activist shareholders to unseat board members this year, and corporate governance experts say it is a test case for how much influence shareholders could wield in determining the composition of boards of directors at public companies.

Stewart channels Cheney: 'You gotta piss lightning and crap thunder, Alberto!' David Edwards and Mike Sheehan
Published: Friday April 20, 2007

Jon Stewart channels Vice President Cheney in advising embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

"It was clear that before Alberto Gonzales would face his Senate inquisitors, he was gonna have to buckle down," says Stewart on The Daily Show. "And so he retired to his Department of Justice chambers for several weeks, up to 5 hours a day studying documents, boning up on how humans express sincerity facially."

Video clips of fictional boxer Rocky Balboa in intense training played in the background as Stewart continued to describe Gonzales' preparations for his testimony: "All the time, Cheney following him on a bicycle, shouting, 'You gotta piss lightning and crap thunder, Alberto!'"

McCain Demanded Kerry Apologize For Botched Joke, Now Tells Critics To ‘Get A Life’
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) responds to criticism of his “bomb, bomb Iran” song by hiding behind veterans and then blowing the matter off:

The Arizona Republican was asked for his reaction to any negative response to the joke when he arrived in Las Vegas for a fundraiser Thursday night.

“Please, I was talking to some of my old veterans friends,” he told reporters. “My response is, Lighten up and get a life.”

When reporters asked if the joke was insensitive, McCain said: “Insensitive to what? The Iranians?”

McCain’s reaction represents yet another flip-flop. When Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) botched a joke about military service last fall, McCain was among Kerry’s first and most vocal critics. McCain repeatedly said that even if Kerry was joking, he should still apologize.

Here’s McCain on ABC’s Good Morning America on 11/1/06:

McCAIN: Well, I’ve read and watched the statement over and over and I’m not sure how you could construe it that way, but if that’s the case, an apology is in order and we can move on. I have made a number of mistakes in my life, which I’d not like to chronicle all over again. But I’ve found that if you — if it is just a botched joke, then apologize and move on.

And again on Fox News on 10/31/06:

Well, my reaction is it’s hard for me to understand that [it was a joke]. But I’ll be glad to give Senator Kerry the benefit of the doubt. He should apologize.

McCain’s botched joke is actually probably less of a concern than his botched credibility.

Just a word of warning. In this next election in 08, you are going to see many Dems run for office. Make sure, in your area, that you do a background check on all of them.

There will be many repubs changing party to get into office. They will be labeled Dem but will vote with the repubs. Make sure you aren't voting in Bluedog Dems or mascaraders.

These people will infiltrate to control.

GOP Gonzales Resignation Roll Call
By Will Thomas - April 20, 2007, 12:19 PM
It's time for an update.

Since our last rundown of Republicans who want Gonzales gone, a number of others have made outright calls for his resignation. Still more have stopped just short, though they've made it clear that they hope Gonzales will do everyone a favor and resign.

Gonzales' sole enthusiastic supporters, by our count, are Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and the White House.

The list:

Sen. John Sununu (R-NH)- "The president should fire the attorney general and replace him as soon as possible with someone who can provide strong, aggressive leadership."

Sen. Gordon Smith (R-OR)- "For the Justice Department to be effective before the U.S. Senate, it would be helpful."

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK): "I believe you ought to suffer the consequences that these others have suffered. I believe the best way for us to put this behind us is your resignation."

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL)- "There are some problems that he just hasn't handled well, and it might just be best if he came to a conclusion that the department is better served if he's not there.'"

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)- "Sometimes, it just came down to these were not the right people at the right time. If I applied that standard to you, what would you say?"

Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA)- "For you to have said this was an ‘overblown personnel matter,’ I think that can't be erased. And the clouds over a lot of the professionals can't be erased and the worry by those who haven’t been subjected to those clouds can't be erased. Now, I’m not going call for you resignation; I'm not going to make a recommendation on that. I think there are two people that have to decide that question. You have to decide it in the first instance. If you decide to stay on, it’s up to the President to decide."

The House

Rep. Vern Elhers (R-MI)- "Since he's such a close, personal friend, he's hurt the President by what he's doing, he should have the politeness to offer his resignation."

Rep. Paul Gillmor (R-OH)- 'Given the totality of the circumstances, I think it would be better for the President and the Department if the Attorney General were to step down."

Rep. Dana Rohrbacher (R-CA)- "Even for Republicans this is a warning sign … saying there needs to be a change."

Rep. Lee Terry (R-NE)- "Frankly, until these statements came out that contradicted his first statement, I was backing him, saying that he shouldn't resign. Now I think that he should."

Prominent Conservatives

The National Review Editorial Board- "Alberto Gonzales should resign. The Justice Department needs a fresh start."

Mark Corallo, Justice Department spokesman (2002-2005)- "Alberto Gonzales' loyalty to George Bush has got to trump George Bush's loyalty to Alberto Gonzales."

Additionally, prior to Gonzales’ testimony, a group of conservatives with ties to the White House wrote President Bush to express their displeasure with the Attorney General. They finished the letter saying:

"Attorney General Gonzales has proven an unsuitable steward of the law and should resign for the good of the country... The President should accept the resignation."

Included as signatories were: Bruce Fein, a former senior official in the Reagan Justice Department, David Keene, Chariman of the American Conservative Union, John Whitehead, head of the Rutherford Institute, Bob Barr, former Georgia Congressman, and Richard Viguerie, a well-known GOP fundraiser.

U.S. forces erect wall between Shiites, Sunnis

Three-mile barrier will divide Baghdad groups torn by sectarian hate

AGHDAD - U.S. soldiers are building a three-mile wall to protect a Sunni Arab enclave surrounded by Shiite neighborhoods in a Baghdad area “trapped in a spiral of sectarian violence and retaliation,” the military said.

When the wall is finished, the minority Sunni community of Azamiyah, located on the eastern side of the Tigris River, will be completely gated, and traffic control points manned by Iraqi soldiers will provide the only means to enter it, the military said.

“Shiites are coming in and hitting Sunnis, and Sunnis are retaliating across the street,” said Capt. Scott McLearn, of the U.S. 407th Brigade Support Battalion, which began the project April 10 and is working “almost nightly until the wall is complete,” the statement said.

Number Of White House Officials Allowed To Intervene In DoJ Cases Jumps By 10,325 Percent »
During the Clinton administration, there were just four people in the White House — the President, the Vice President, the White House Counsel, and the Deputy White House Counsel — who could participate in discussions with the Justice Department “regarding pending criminal investigations and criminal cases.” There were just three Justice Department officials authorized to talk with the White House. This arrangement was intended restrict political interference in the administration of justice.

Yesterday in his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said that it was important that the Justice Department “be independent from” the White House. But as Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) pointed out, the firewalls that had existed during the Clinton administration have been ripped down. In the Bush administration, the rules have been rewritten so that 417 White House officials and 30 Justice Department officials are eligible to have discussions about criminal cases. Watch it:

When asked to respond, Gonzales simply replied, “I do recall being concerned about that as White House counsel.”

To get your Friday off to a proper start.....

A guy walks into a bar with his pet monkey. He orders a drink and while he's drinking, the monkey jumps all around the place. The monkey grabs some olives off the bar and eats them.
Then grabs some sliced limes and eats them. Then jumps onto the pool table, grabs one of the billiard balls, sticks it in his mouth, and to everyone's amazement, somehow swallows it whole.

The bartender screams at the guy "Did you see what your monkey just did?"

The guy says "No, what?"

"He just ate the cue ball off my pool table-whole!" "Yeah, that doesn't surprise me,"replied the guy.

"He eats everything in sight, the little bastard. Sorry. I'll pay for the cue ball and stuff." He finishes his drink, pays his bill, pays for the stuff the monkey ate, then leaves.

Two weeks later he's in the bar again, and has his monkey with him. He orders a drink and the monkey starts running around the bar again. While the man is finishing his drink, the monkey finds a maraschino cherry on the bar. He grabs it, sticks it up his butt, pulls it out, and eats it.

The bartender is disgusted.

"Did you see what your monkey did now?" he asks.

"No, what?" replies the guy.

"Well, he stuck a maraschino cherry up his butt, pulled it out, and ate it!" said the bartender.

"Yeah, that doesn't surprise me," replied the guy.

" He still eats everything in sight,

but ever since he swallowed that cue ball, he measures everything first..."

Swap-A-Refugee-of-Your-Choice!

It sounds like an updated slave trade for the New American Century.

Should humans be considered commodities to be bought, sold, and traded between countries today?

Does a person lose his/her human rights when he/she becomes a commodity?

Will the U.S. be able to circumvent international law -- simply because the refugees have been residing in that tropical paradise and world renown resort in Cuba, Concentration Camp Guantánamo Bay?

Are you proud that the United States came up with this nifty updated innovation?

(How about trading the politician of your choice with another country? Would any countries like Dubya or Cheney?

We might even consider a two-for-one special -- considering the quality of the American made political "commodities" in the trade).

_______________________

RIGHTS: "U.S.-Aussie Refugee Swap Comes Under Fire"

Excerpts:

A controversial bilateral deal between Australia and the United States to swap refugees has triggered a storm of protests from human rights activists and legal experts.

By housing refugees on Nauru and at Guantánamo Bay, both Australia and the United States are trying to avoid their legal obligations under the 1951 Refugee Convention, HRW said in a statement released Thursday.

Ratner, whose Centre for Constitutional Rights is challenging the legality of unlawfully detaining terror suspects in Guantánamo Bay, said: "There is no place in a just world for Guantánamos or Naurus -- and certainly no place for trading human beings, as was done in the days of the slave trader."

Fats Lowbrow er, Rush Limbaugh was among the first to play the Soros card. And for equal measure, he threw out the name of Hillary Clinton, almost as if sending a subconscious message to the nimble-minded Manchurian Candidates who listen to his show. According to Drugbo the Hut, MMfA is a "Stalinist" organization (doesn't Godwin's Law cover that tired commie cliche as an instant argument killer?) and part of the "Clinton machine agenda." He claimed that Imus was taken down by MMfA because he was critical of Hillary Clinton. "This is an election year. Clinton Inc., you get on their case, they're going to take you out." Limbaugh continued, "When I say the Clinton team, I include Media Matters for America, this supposed tax-exempt media watchdog group," adding, falsely, "They are George Soros-funded. This is clearly part of the 'Democrat' (sic) Party machine." Oxymoron had absolutely no shame in his lashing, claiming that Democrats are anti-Semitic, racist, totalitarian and are engaged in smear tactics.

Oh, and he even had the balls to use phrases like 'draft dodger' and "philanderer," evidentially with no sense of personal irony whatsoever. Well, at least he didn't say "drug addict." Irony is always in abundant supply on Limbaugh's show. He claims to take the high road, and that he is "not demeaning people on this program in any way." Yeah, right.

---Regarding Rush Limbaugh---

I read about Limbaugh in Time magazine while I was in the Caribbean. Subsequent to his new-found fame (kinda like Newt Gingrich's manufactured fame after gracing Time's cover), Limbaugh had a short-lived cable TV show.

Coincidentally, cable TV access reached my end of the island at the same time. I was surfing the channels as most people do when they acquire a bunch after having a few when I found Limbaugh pontificating. I tried to sit through Limbaugh's TV program more than once but found it too sophomoric to hold my interest. Simply said, whomever was supporting his meteoric rise in popularity was a person with whom I wouldn't want to share an elevator, however brief the trip might be.

Years later (two years ago?), I decided to listen to his radio show whilst rehabbing my shop building. I had read Rush Limbaugh Is A Big Fat Idiot and decided that I should find out for myself.

Al Franken is right. Limbaugh is profoundly boring. Never mind the inaccuracies. Never mind the fact that I can listen to the news and predict, to a "T", what Limbaugh will say the following day.

There is much, none of it good, that I could write about his show, but I won't. At least half of his air time is spent talking about himself. That, alone, is enough to make me dive for cover.

I accept that what I am about to write is unfair, but I can't shake it. When I learn that someone is a Limbaugh fan, I tag him or her as a political moron, as a comedy moron, and as another of the suckers that are born every minute.

I can't wait to hear Sam's show this weekend. I am not excited about it though. I'm still very pissed that I haven't heard Sam in a week and may have to wait three more. Sam is a rock star. Oh by the way, anybody getting sick of Arlen Specter getting outraged and doing nothing?

Sometime in the 1980s, my Detroit talk radio station (all local hosts, all interesting, all professional, but with varied topics and expertise) introduced Limbaugh into the line-up. It got very sad, very fast after that.
Bloviating, self-centered crapola from remote locations became the flavor of the day. I was temporarily heartened by AAR, but now that's gone too. Eh.

I want to open up a discussion here.

Who continues to believe that Imus' firing was justified, especially in light of the fact that MSNBC is going to use a conservative ralk host to replace him?

Please tell me that someone here believes that CBS and MSNBC should have fired him for such a meaningless phrase.

Welcome to the pendulum swing.

The Joe Pyne-esque, one shtick, "you're fat and you're ugly, too" game has played out.

Being shockingly mean and insulting is remarkable and tantalizing only so long as it is not available across the dial.

The comment that tips the scale was preordained to be just another comment like all of the other comments before it.

Imus was not the first to go down and will not be the last.

The first geek to bite off a chicken head draws crowds. The one-hundredth geek draws the wrath of PETA.

And so it goes.

So basically you agree with me.

Is anyone willing to pick up the challenge here?

Who believes that his firing was good? Maybe I must tap AAR hosts. I don't know. Only they seem to think it was god awful.

...which is partly why people hate us. We are nauseatingly p.c. sometimes.

Nope. I agree that the ho comment wasn't much different from all of the rest (and not just from Imus).

I don't have a problem with meanness being called out for what it is. If you want to have a no-risk career of hurling insults, then you should do it like Don Rickles does; obviously tongue-in-cheek. (Rickles bores me, for the record, but he is a good counterpoint to genuinely mean celebrities.)

The whole point of having an act that pushes the politeness envelope is to elicit the response "he can't say that on the air, can he?"

I have more troubling causes to support than an out-of-work millionaire. Imus won't starve.

Religious groups attempting to remove books from libraries is the type of issue that I can get excited about. Or arrest and confinement without due process. Or an unwarranted war.

Imus is pretty low on my list.

‘Crisis atmosphere’ grips World Bank. Sources say “there is a crisis atmosphere at World Bank headquarters,” as “displays of rebellion” are coming from “all levels of staff.” IPS reports:

[A]bout 110 country directors, their deputies and programme coordinators sent a message Friday saying they want Wolfowitz out.

At issue is a scandal involving excessive pay he coordinated for his girlfriend and then-Bank staffer Shaha Riza at a time when he was spearheading an anti-corruption campaign at the Bank and in its projects.

The officials, many of them considered senior staff, had met with Wolfowitz Wednesday at the Watergate office complex in Washington DC, where he was asked repeatedly to resign. At least four country directors publicly called upon him to leave his job.

Legislating by ambush. The House today passed the Shareholder Vote on Executive Compensation Act, which would, “for the first time, allow shareholders of corporations to at least have a say in the salaries given to executives.” Passage came only after conservatives attempted to use a legislative device called a “motion to recommit” to kill the measure. It’s been a common tactic in the 110th Congress. “The strategy is to institute a divisive change to the bill at the last moment, often unrelated to the original intent of the legislation, hoping that the altered bill can then be defeated on final passage.”

Financial Services Chairman Barney Frank, who introduced the bill, spoke out against today’s motion to recommit in his usual biting and entertaining way. Watch it:

Mr. Speaker..does whining come out of my time?

In 2004, Bush said we can't win the war on terror
by Joe Sudbay (DC) · 4/20/2007 09:38:00 PM ET

All the feigned outrage from Republicans (and Joe Lieberman) over Harry Reid's accurate assessment of Iraq is really beyond annoying. They're such hypocrites. The opposite of losing is winning. Yet, not one of those Republicans (or Joe Lieberman) can say that we're winning the war that Bush started.

And since we're talking hypocrisy, let's not forget that is was George Bush who said in September of 2004 that we can't win the war on terror:
Lauer: You said to me a second ago, one of the things you'll lay out in your vision for the next four years is how to go about winning the war on terror. That phrase strikes me a little bit. Do you really think we can win this war on terror in the next four years?

President Bush: I have never said we can win it in four years.

Lauer: So I’m just saying can we win it? Do you see that?

President Bush: I don’t think you can win it.
Here's a crazy idea for those in the traditional media who just parrot GOP talking points: Do some research. That statement sure gave a lot of aid and comfort to our enemies -- the enemies who actually attacked us on September 11th -- not the enemies we created with Bush's war in Iraq.

And a big shout out to JM for pointing out this particular Bush hypocrisy.

Pentagon issues gag order. At the risk of being repetitive, my objection to Imus' statement is that he called young women who had done the right things, on and off the court, to be in a position that deserved positive reinforcement not derogatory slurs. Granted he is not the worst of the worst; and just because he had been allowed to make the remarks before, doesn't mean he gets a free pass for life. Unfortunately, there is always someone, who may be worse, to take his place. It was a small victory, but I'll take it. It also made a difference to those young women.

Firing him is not going to change America, but it did give me half-a-second of satisfaction, a glimpse at what doing the right thing looks like, and it paused, if ever so briefly, those who do say a whole lot worse. Oh yes, it also gave me a chance to identify who is real and who isn't...sorta of what I like to call "the fly on the wall perspective."

On Thursday's show of his last week, Sam made it crystal clear and got it right when he spoke about its significance.
