Wednesday - The Senate Takes A Stand

Well the Senate Dems took a stand yesterday, setting up a showdown with Bush over Iraq funding and withdrawal. That leads us to the question of the day: If a president vetoes a bill that provides funding for the troops, doesn't that president hate the troops? We thought so. But just to be sure, we'll ask Christy Harvey from the Center for American Progress, and David Sirota from SirotaBlog. And we'll talk to Daniel Levy from the Century Foundation's Prospects for Peace Initiative about Condi Rice's trip to the Middle East.

FBI Provided Inaccurate Data for Surveillance Warrants

By John Solomon
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, March 27, 2007; A05

FBI agents repeatedly provided inaccurate information to win secret court approval of surveillance warrants in terrorism and espionage cases, prompting officials to tighten controls on the way the bureau uses that powerful anti-terrorism tool, according to Justice Department and FBI officials.

The errors were pervasive enough that the chief judge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, wrote the Justice Department in December 2005 to complain. She raised the possibility of requiring counterterrorism agents to swear in her courtroom that the information they were providing was accurate, a procedure that could have slowed such investigations drastically.

A internal FBI review in early 2006 of some of the more than 2,000 surveillance warrants the bureau obtains each year confirmed that dozens of inaccuracies had been provided to the court. The errors ranged from innocuous lapses, such as the wrong description of family relationships, to more serious problems, such as citing information from informants who were no longer active, officials said.

Wikipedia bio on Lindner brags about his GOP, Bush association
Carl Lindner, who controlled the Chiquita Company when it began payments to terrorists, seems to be a proud member of the Republican Party and George Bush.

yeah, that would be carl lindner. sadly cincinnati is home to a lot of rich f'ing conservatives. the northeast side of cincy avoided suburban expansion because it was historically home to the horsey set. surprisingly, no super highways bisect it the way they do other parts of the town. the zip code for madeira is supposed to rank number 2 in giving to the republican party, beat out only by one in new york city (westchester ?).

recently, it was considered scandulous that dems are moving into indian hills. hackett and wulsin (a successful doctor in her own right) live out there as well as stan chesley the lawyer who supports the clintons.

probably the worst part of lindners legacy is his building and supporting of the christian hills school. its name says all you need to know. families all wanting to be associated with the 'elite' flock to this school in hopes of attending and getting indoctrinated (can you tell what i think of it)

one good thing i can say, udf isn't bad ice cream.

US Navy flexes muscles in Persian Gulf

(AP)

Updated: 2007-03-28 09:16

ABOARD THE USS JOHN C. STENNIS - American warplanes screamed off two aircraft carriers Tuesday as the US Navy staged its largest show of force in the Persian Gulf since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, launching a mammoth exercise meant as a message to the Iranians.

A French naval strike group, led by the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, was operating just outside the Gulf in the Arabian Sea. But the French ships were supporting NATO forces in Afghanistan and not taking part in the US maneuvers, Aandahl said.

At the Pentagon, spokesman Bryan Whitman said the Navy routinely conducts exercises when its forces are deployed near each other.

"The exercise should reassure our friends and allies of our commitment to security and stability in the region," Whitman said. "We are not interested in confrontation in the Gulf."

The war games involve more than 10,000 US personnel mounting simulated attacks on enemy aircraft and ships, while hunting submarines and looking for mines

EU's Germany summons Iran envoy over soldiers

Mar 27, 2007

European Union president Germany summoned Iran's ambassador to the Foreign Ministry in Berlin on Tuesday to protest against the detention of 15 British soldiers and demand their immediate release.

A spokeswoman for the German Foreign Ministry said a deputy foreign minister delivered his protest to the Iranian ambassador. Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier is currently on a trip to central Asia.

"Iran is responsible for the well-being of the Europeans and to ensure consular access to them," the spokeswoman said.

Iran's Act of War

by Nile Gardiner (More by this author)

Posted: 03/26/2007

This latest act of aggression by the brutal, erratic and highly dangerous regime of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad must not be tolerated.

It also makes a mockery of the idea, popular in diplomatic circles that the United State should negotiate with rogue states such as Iran and Syria in bringing about a peaceful solution to the violence in Iraq.

There can be no negotiation with terrorist regimes that actively seek the destabilization of the country, and facilitate the killing of Coalition forces.

Tehran’s bold gambit, designed to intimidate the West at a time of heightening tensions over Iran’s nuclear program, must result in a greater sense of resolve on the part of the United States and Great Britain, and both powers should escalate the build-up of naval power in the Persian Gulf.

The U.S. already has two carrier battle groups in the area, and Britain has several Royal Navy warships operating in the region.

The message should be sent loud and clear to Tehran that actions have consequences, and that the West is prepared to use force both to halt Iran’s nuclear program and in retaliation for hostile acts against American, British and other Allied forces.

Emails link Johnny "House of Death" Sutton to DOJ firing scandal

The U.S. Attorney who spearheaded a cover-up of a U.S. government informant’s role in the House of Death mass murder also appears to have played a leadership role in the recent U.S. Attorney firing scandal.

That U.S. Attorney, Johnny Sutton, is the lead federal prosecutor for the Western District of Texas (based in San Antonio) and serves as chairman of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee of U.S. Attorneys (AGAC), which has major influence in developing Department of Justice (DOJ) policies.

It is in the context of that latter role that Sutton’s name shows up in some of the e-mails turned over to Congress to date by DOJ concerning the Bush administration’s controversial move to fire eight U.S. Attorneys (USAs) — allegedly, according to some critics, in retaliation for their failure to pursue prosecutorial strategies deemed to be in the administration’s political interests.

According to the emails, it is clear Sutton was in the loop on the firings. How big a role he played, if any, in initiating or orchestrating those terminations behind the scenes is not clear from the electronic missives. But given his favored status within the Bush administration, and his long-time ties to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and to President Bush, it seems that someone in Congress should be asking that question.

After all, Sutton has already been exposed as an individual willing to use his political pull within the Bush administration to silence and retaliate against a DEA whistleblower who sought to expose the U.S. government’s complicity in mass murder in Juárez, Mexico, and its role in nearly causing the death of a DEA agent and his family in that same city — another obviously embarrassing political scandal for the Bush White House.

You can find the DOJ documents on the Web site of the U.S. House Committee on the Judiciary.

Following is the string of emails where Sutton’s name (bolded, along with email dates, for emphasis) surfaces, based on an initial examination of the DOJ documents.

Glory! Glory! Hillarrrrrrrrrrry!
Her truth is marching on.

I have seen HC in the watch fires of a hundred circling camps
They have builded HC an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read HC’s righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps;

Riyadh - London must accept its 15 British sailors were arrested in Iranian waters before a solution to the crisis can be found, Iranian foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki said on Wednesday.

"Due to the nature of the issue, we should stand on common points for solving the problem. The first step being what is the real picture of the incident," Mottaki told Reuters in Riyadh.

"The real picture is that the British sailors were arrested in the territorial waters of Iran ... this must be accepted by the government of the UK," added Mottaki on the sidelines of an Arab summit in the Saudi capital.

"The second step is finalising and completing the investigation and based on these two points and by accepting these two points there could be a starting points for solving the problem," he said.

Democratic presidential contender Hillary Rodham Clinton has agreed to help one-time candidate Tom Vilsack, who endorsed her on Monday, as he seeks to retire a campaign debt of more than $400,000.

Clinton spokesman Mark Daley said he was uncertain how Clinton would go about raising money for Vilsack, but he conceded that at some point, she would have to contact her supporters. "Someone in her shop is going to have to reach out," Daley said.

Clinton Receives Endorsement From NOW

Mar 28, 7:46 PM (ET)

(AP) Democratic Presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., speaks at the Communications...

WASHINGTON (AP) - Presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton declared Wednesday that if you look up the word "feminist" in a dictionary, you'll find her.

Clinton received the endorsement of the National Organization for Women, a group of half a million members who support feminist candidates for elective office.

Asked if she viewed herself as a feminist, Clinton said by the standard definition, yes.

"If you look in the dictionary, the word feminist means someone who believes in equal rights for women in society, in the economy, the political process - generally believes in the equality of women. And I certainly believe in the equality of women," she said.

Her response was met with enthusiastic cheers from the crowd.

A new Justice Dept. document dump appears to “clearly show that [Gonzales’ ex-chief of staff Kyle] Sampson attempted to mislead Congress by proxy — that is to say, he gave false information to DOJ officials who were preparing to provide information to Congress.” That’s illegal. But Sampson says it isn’t true, and he’s testifying under oath tomorrow.

UPDATE: TPMMuckraker and Tim Grieve have more.

UPDATE II: ABC has a copy of Sampson’s opening statement tomorrow. He denies responsibility for not telling Justice Dept. officials about White House involvement in the scandal, and says others in the Department knew as much as he did.

He maintains that the decision by the Administration to ask for their resignations is a “benign rather than sinister story.” …

When controversy erupted and Congress began to ask questions about the US Attorneys Sampson admits the Department’s response was mishandled through an “unfortunate combination of poor judgments, poor word choices, and poor communication.” He offers an apology to the US Attorneys for what became a “ugly, undignified spectacle.”

He says that he resigned for mistakes made “honestly and in good faith”. He writes, “I failed to organize a more effective response to questions about the replacement process, but I never sought to conceal or withhold any material fact about the matter from anyone.”

He writes that while “others in the Department knew what I knew about the origins and timing of this enterprise” that none of them spoke up on those subjects while preparing Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty.

BREAKING: Drudge links to Politico 45 times during its two-month existence

As Media Matters for America has noted, Politico chief political correspondent Mike Allen's March 27 article, "Rookie Mistakes Plague Obama," was apparently flagged by Matt Drudge's website, The Drudge Report, approximately one hour before The Politico posted the article on its website on the evening of March 26. John Harris, Politico editor-in-chief, has written about the media's interest in having their work linked to on the Drudge Report. Several commentators, including blogger Glenn Greenwald, have noted an apparent tendency of Drudge to link to Politico items. From the AP:

Eight federal prosecutors were fired last year because they did not sufficiently support President Bush's priorities, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' former chief of staff says in remarks prepared for delivery Thursday to Congress.
"The distinction between 'political' and 'performance-related' reasons for removing a United States attorney is, in my view, largely artificial," said Kyle Sampson.

The aide, who quit because of the furor over the firings, is to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee. A copy of his prepared remarks was obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press.

"A U.S. attorney who is unsuccessful from a political perspective ... is unsuccessful," Sampson said.

This is gonna be fun.

Gen. McCaffrey: Military Is In ‘Peril’

By: Nicole Belle @ 4:33 PM - PDT C&Ler Gregory sent me this article and at first, I thought that this wasn't a lot of new information. But then it dawned on me: this is the MILITARY TIMES acknowledging just how bleak the situation is. There's no point in polishing it up anymore. And further, if they are conceding this much without fear of "lowering morale", how much worse is reality?

McCaffrey, a highly decorated Vietnam veteran who retired in 1996 as head of U.S. Southern Command and then served as President Bill Clinton's drug czar, wrote the eight-page memo based on a March 9-16 trip to Iraq and Kuwait. The memo lists over 65 U.S. and allied officials that McCaffrey talked to during his trip. They include Gen. David Petraeus, the new commander of Multi-National Forces - Iraq, and Lt. Gen. Raymond Odierno, who commands Multi-National Corps - Iraq, as well as virtually every other senior U.S. or allied military figure there.

His view that Iraq is in the midst of a civil war is at odds with that expressed by incoming U.S. Central Command chief Adm. William Fallon, who told CNN March 27 that he didn't think Iraq was in a civil war.

Three million Iraqis, including many of the country's educated elite, have fled the country, McCaffrey notes.

In the land they left behind, the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki "has little credibility among the Shia populations from which it emerged," writes McCaffrey. "It is despised by the Sunni as a Persian surrogate. It is believed untrustworthy and incompetent by the Kurds.

"There is no function of government that operates effectively across the nation - not health care, not justice, not education, not transportation, not labor and commerce, not electricity, not oil production. There is no province in the country in which the government has dominance …. No Iraqi government official, coalition soldier, diplomat, reporter, foreign NGO, nor contractor can walk the streets of Baghdad, nor Mosul, nor Kirkuk, nor Basra, nor Tikrit, nor Najaf, nor Ramadi - without heavily armed protection."

Misqouted! He hasn't even read them. Here is one:

March 24, from correspondent Sahar

The loss of state-supplied electricity has made private generators a necessity. Every 50-100 homes are supplied with power from a generator, situated “around the corner” or “down the road” from where you live. The noise generated by these machines has contaminated our very lives. (Not to mention the smoke and fumes that are killing us).

They supply us with a little power for six hours only, the rest of the day we have to switch on our own tiny house generators, which are just as noisy and smelly. (Those of us that can afford them)

The noise from explosions and fighting and cocky nobodies shooting live ammunition into the air to satisfy their sick inner hunger for power is just the cream topping on the cake.

How to sleep properly? How to work properly? How to study?? How to rest, think and achieve?

This war is cultivating a very resilient strain here in Iraq. Should we be thankful?

And this is the reason that people don't catch typos. You have to read a sentence backwards to catch the typos. It forces you to slow down and really look at the words you are reading.

Operation Bite: April 6 sneak attack by US forces against Iran planned, Russian military sources warn

Mon, 26 Mar 2007 12:37:00

By Webster G. Tarpley (http://onlinejournal.com/artman/publish/article_1888.shtml)

Webster G. Tarpley is a journalist. Among other works, he has published an investigation on the manipulation of the Red Brigades by the Vatican’s P2 Suite and the assassination of Aldo Moro, a non-authorized biography of George H. Bush, and more recently an analysis of the methods used to perpetrate the September 11, 2001 attacks.

WASHINGTON DC, -- The long awaited US military attack on Iran is now on track for the first week of April, specifically for 4 am on April 6, the Good Friday opening of Easter weekend, writes the well-known Russian journalist Andrei Uglanov in the Moscow weekly “Argumenty Nedeli.” Uglanov cites Russian military experts close to the Russian General Staff for his account.

Mon Mar 26, 2007 at 10:25:38 AM PDT

So I long ago gave up on American media to give me up to the minute details of what our government is up to. Luckily, I speak more languages than the Pope's got Catholics which is why this Easter I am concerned. Very concerned that Bush is about to wag the tail clean off the dog.

All the rage on Italian and German newspaper sites and blogs is the our, i.e. The American Government's bombing operation for Iran scheduled for April 6, Good Friday of Easter of this year.

Government Dismissed Iraq Death Toll Report In Full Knowledge It Was Likely Accurate

John Hopkins study put toll at 655,000 but they didn't want you to know that

Steve Watson
Infowars.net
Tuesday, March 27, 2007

Documents obtained by the BBC under a Freedom Of Information Act request have proven that despite public dismissal of last year's Iraq Death Toll study, published in The Lancet Medical Journal, British Government officials actually backed the methods used by scientists who concluded that more than 600,000 Iraqis have been killed since the invasion.

The study was jointly conducted by the John Hopkins School of Public Health and and Al Mustansiriya University in Baghdad and compared mortality rates before and after the invasion by surveying 47 randomly chosen areas across 16 provinces in Iraq.

It concluded that as many as 654,965 more Iraqis may have died since hostilities began in Iraq in March 2003 than would have been expected under pre-war conditions. The deaths from all causes—violent and non-violent—are over and above the estimated 143,000 deaths per year that occurred from all causes prior to the March 2003 invasion.

Researchers estimated with 95 per cent certainty that the war and its aftermath have resulted in the deaths of between 426,000 and 794,000 Iraqis.

Awesome diary at the Kos. Best one I ever read:

The Illusion is Shattered...the centre cannot hold....Impeach

It has always been an illusion.

The toughness, the gravitas, the competency, the possession of any measure of ability.

It has always been a sham, a PR creation, a puppet show....a joke.

Some of us saw it coming, some of us saw it quickly, some had rude awakenings, some are being fooled still.

But for the world, for those with eyes, the bloom is off the rose, and the rose colored glasses can no longer block the glare of a horrifying reality.

The world has been conned.

Deceived and hoodwinked by the marginally rational ravings of an antiquated and failed ideology and its dimwitted and addled practitioners. Installed by court fiat in a desperate attempt to fulfill a myth that has and never held true currency and has proven bankrupt and disastrous at every implementation attempted. Imperial conservatism has always failed, no matter how bright the bunting.

The Serious People in the world are waking up to what has no doubt been a long nagging nightmare. Something they feared all along but could not admit to in their waking hours. They knew it was possible but too much was at stake to acknowledge the awfulness of possibility involved. Denial was the watchword. Rationalization, self-interest and hubris the currency of commerce with an irrestible imposed power.

Now even the co-conspirators are turning.

The world is being held hostage by the unwonted aggression of an incompetent, delusional thug.

Denial is no longer available.

In effect and by affect the result is nothing less than a true insanity of ideology, a method of internal, delusional, misplaced self-confidence just credible enough to be applied to wreak havoc and chaos in ever widening ripples that have now consumed the entire planet in one of its pernicious forms or another.

And now the planet is swiftly and completely realizing that the madness is real and will continue and indeed, consume all if it is not stopped. They are stepping up to stop it. They are saying... no more madness.

A complicit Congress and a craven press conspired to keep the world in distraction and ignorance for much too long. But now, as the consequences are revealed in Iraq much too painfully and clearly, and the abuse of power and petty politicization are revealed through oversight (Bless you St. Waxman!) it comes apparent....the centre cannot hold.

There is no there there.

There never was.

The whole ball of wax is hollow and void.....indeed is revealed to be filled with a rotting stench now it has been punctured. The stench and smell increases and it grows more foul and toxic with every passing month of death in the desert, with every daily revelation of crime or treason or outrage now revealed by the investigators.

The centre cannot hold under the hot desert sun and the cold light of oversight. The die is cast, the bell is tolling and the moment of reckoning is near at hand.

But the madman will not stop of his own accord. Never. By his very definition, the madman cannot stop himself, lest his worldview, his persona, his illusion be shattered. He cannot stop himself from the destruction that his whirlwind reaps. He madness must be restrained by others, must be stopped by those sane ones left. You know it, I know it, the whole world knows it. Most importantly, the Saudis and the Jordanians and the UAE and the Iranians know it. He threatens and blusters and rattles at yet another "innocent" nation, another, weaker target for his compensatory aggression. And now his former allies find him no longer a useful bulldog, but realize finally that he threatens their children too. And that he will not stop, that he cannot stop, lest his enemy.....reality.....catch up.

And he is left naked.....and alone.....and desperate.

But the whole world cannot stay him from his course! THEY cannot stop him from firing the horrible apocalyptic weapons of his mad and apocalyptic vision.

He possesses the most terrible weapons ever created by mankind....he cannot be conquered from without. There is but one entity, one force, one method for his ending.

Impeachment.....by his own people. THE People.

Us.

While we still can.

We owe a debt to the world. We owe a debt of redemption to our national ideal.

You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.
Abraham Lincoln
They are no longer fooling most of the people. They are weak, but they are entrenched and will fight to the death....and take as many others down with them as they are able, regardless of the cost. While the damage they have done to the world, the damage they have done to our Constitution and government and way of life continues unabated. Their deeds, ideology, their methods and corruption, their politicization and memes of separation, of divide and conquer.....their Republicanism....MUST be repudiated by the strongest possible terms and methods possible. To stop the damage, to stop the polarization, to stop the zeitgeist of facisistic thought and the methodology of thuggish interrelation they have created and perpetrated upon the world. The entire fabric and substance of their nefarious ideology and creation must be Impeached (definition 4 &5)....before our country and our world can right the wrongs and come together to repair the grievous damage, to create a new united, cooperative model of existence for our world. A new model that is imminently necessary with the looming and undeniable challenges our planet faces.

He will not listen to Congress, he will not listen to his allies, he will not listen to reason.

586 more days of escalating madness lay before us in the hot desert sun.

How long before the intervention?

How much longer do we bide?

How much more atrocity and torture do we allow in our names?

How much more madness?

How many more dead?

just remember, whats good for general motors is good for the usa.

for you young'uns out there:

Al Capp created General Bullmoose in June 1953 as the epitome of a ruthless capitalist. Bullmoose's motto "What's good for General Bullmoose is good for the USA!" was adapted by Capp from a statement made by Charles E. Wilson, the former head of General Motors and Secretary of Defense under President Dwight Eisenhower. In 1952 Wilson told a Senate subcommittee, "What is good for the country is good for General Motors, and what's good for General Motors is good for the country." Li'l Abner became embroiled in many implausible but hilarious adventures with the cold-hearted Bullmoose over the years.

UPI Poll: Iran is top threat to U.S.

Published: Mar. 28, 2007 at 10:00 AM

Iran was listed the top threat to the United States by more than 40 percent of the U.S. respondents to a UPI-Zogby International poll.

The 4,824 participants in a Zogby interactive poll conducted March 14-16 were asked to choose from a list of countries which was seen as the "greatest threat" to the United States.

The poll had a margin of effort of 1.4 percentage points.

Iran, which has had harsh words for the United States' effort to have the Iranian nuclear program ended, was named as the "greatest threat" by 41.9 percent of those asked. North Korea was second on the list at 14 percent. The next two most popular choices were "not sure" (12.6 percent) and "other" (11.8 percent).

Saudi Arabia was selected by 7.9 percent of respondents. Iraq, named by 3.7 percent, and Afghanistan by 3.6 percent -- where the United States is conducting extensive military operations -- were sixth and seventh on the list.

Asked where the United States should be directing most of its efforts in the war on terror, 23 percent of respondents said Iraq, 22.7 percent Afghanistan and 14.3 percent said Iran.

Iraqi Policemen Go on Killing Spree

Off-duty Shiite policemen enraged by massive bombings in the northern town of Tal Afar went on a revenge spree against Sunni residents there on Wednesday, killing at least 45 men execution-style, police and hospital officials said.

According to the Borgen Project, $340 billion has already gone towards fundin this war. Yet we are still in the midst of the struggle in Iraq with no end in sight. Withdrawal is increasingly appearing to be the most legitimate option. Let's put our money towards a cause that will actually make a difference, such as meeting the Millenium Goals. With $19 billion, just a fraction of the war funding, 600 million hungry people could be fed for a year.
