TUESDAY: The First Sign of the Apocalypse
You know things are really coming down when the GOP's OWN talking point is that Alberto Gonzales is just incompetent, not a lying crook. When they're trotting out Robert Novak to write this, you know they're staring down the barrel of eternal damnation. Fortunately, your own personal spirit guide, Sam Seder, is here to lead you unharmed through this morass. Today we'll have Air America's own David Bender, law professor Erwin Chemerinsky, and Markos from Daily Kos. Bon Appetit.

looks like War Dog is going to get his dearest wish:
A quite similar snatch operation against the equally belligerent Israelis last July led to a month-long Israeli aerial bombardment of Lebanon and a retaliatory hail of Hezbollah rockets on northern Israeli cities. Well over a thousand people were dead by the end, although nothing was settled.
Any day now, a minor clash along Iraq's land or sea frontier with Iran could kill some American troops and give President Bush an excuse to attack Iran, if he wants one -- and he certainly seems to. If the Revolutionary Guards had got it wrong last Friday and attacked an American boarding party by mistake, he would have his excuse now, and bombs might already be falling on Iran.
All the pieces are in place, and the war could start at any time.
it's a fucked up world.

From Crooks and Liars
During an interview on "The Situation Room" this afternoon, John McCain told Wolf that he needs to "get up to speed" and stop reporting three-month-old news from Iraq. According to McCain, the surge is working! and the streets of Baghdad are safe for Americans to go strolling down. The only problem? Michael Ware, who is, ya know, in Baghdad, says McCain hasn't a clue…
"Honestly, Wolf, you'll barely last twenty minutes out there. I dont know what part of Neverland Senator McCain is talking about when he says we can go strolling in Baghdad."

"It's no use!" my grandfather used to say. "There's not a bit o' use in having brains! All they do is get you into trouble!
A lucky idiot's ten times better off than a brainy man with a jinx on him!
A smart man starts thinkin', and he thinks himself into a jail cell if his luck is bad, and good luck's wasted on him because it ain't reasonable and he don't believe in it when it happens!
It's taken me a lifetime to keep my brains from ruinin' me! No, sir! I hope none o' my descendants inherit my brains. I pity 'em if they do!"
bwhahahaha!
Maybe McCain should put his word on the line and go strolling in Baghdad.

//Despite widespread belief that Osama bin Laden was responsible for the attack, the evidence we have is a suspect video declared to be “bogus” by Bruce Lawrence, perhaps the leading American expert on bin Laden. The US government has never produced the promised report on bin Laden’s responsibility. When the Taliban offered to hand over bin Laden on presentation of evidence, the US government had no evidence to deliver; thus the invasion of Afghanistan.//

Bush and SEC think corporate failures are all the fault of investors
by Chris in Paris · 3/28/2007 05:28:00 AM ET
Class action lawsuits are all the fault of investors and have nothing to do at all with getting ripped off by greedy executives who propped up bogus data to make their companies look hot. Uh huh. Damned investors! How dare they ask for real data that is accurate. How dare they ask for accountability when a company crashes. Having participated in a class action lawsuit against a book-cooking bunch of swindlers and over-payed incompetent execs, I only received pennies on my investment but I still believe this sends the right message to companies that manipulate the books for the greed of a few individuals.
If I was investing in a private company, I would understand that the rules are different. If I was investing in developing country, I would understand that it's not Wall Street and the risks are high. However, if companies want to compete in the public market and accept the riches that comes with being listed in New York and not Buenos Aires, accept the conditions or de-list. The Bush/SEC whining about regulations making American companies uncompetitive is bull. Having a strong system that is regulated and monitored helps everyone. We don't need to look further than the subprime situation to see what happens when hundreds of billions are thrown into an unregulated environment. Some competition, huh?
Quit the crying and get serious about business for goodness sakes.

Officials: Policemen go on killing spree By SINAN SALAHEDDIN, Associated Press Writer
37 minutes ago
Off-duty Shiite policemen enraged by massive bombings in the northern town of Tal Afar went on a revenge spree against Sunni residents there on Wednesday, killing at least 45 men execution-style, police and hospital officials said.
The policemen began roaming the town's Sunni neighborhoods on foot early in the morning, shooting at Sunni residents and homes.
A senior hospital official in Tal Afar said at least 45 men between the ages of 15 and 60 were killed with a shot to the back of the head and four others were wounded. He spoke on condition of anonymity due to security concerns.
Police said dozens of Sunnis were killed or wounded, but they had no precise figures. The shooting continued for more than two hours, the officials said.
Army troops later moved into the Sunni areas to stop the violence and a curfew was slapped on the entire town, according to Wathiq al-Hamdani, the provincial police chief and his head of operations, Brig. Abdul-Karim al-Jibouri.
Tal Afar, located 260 miles northwest of Baghdad, is in the province of Ninevah, of which Mosul is the capital.
"The situation is under control now," said al-Hamdani. "The local Tal Afar police have been confined to their bases and policemen from Mosul are moving there to replace them."
Al-Jibouri said he was heading to Tal Afar to take charge of the situation.
Two truck bombs hit markets in Tal Afar Tuesday, killing at least 63 and wounding 150.

couldn't agree with you more. the ones that are whining the loudest are the ones trying to squeeze by with marginal performance. i personally think that if a few more ceos and boards of directors ended up in jail, the financial markets would be a much friendlier place.
isn't it wonderful that you can rob a convenience store and get 20 years in prison, but if your weapon is a corporation you get off free with a lot of money.

(oh, there's another piece over there)
WAR ON THE PENTAGON
On September 10, 2001, Rumsfeld stepped to the podium...
"The topic today is an adversary that poses a threat, a serious threat, to the security of the United States of America -- It disrupts the defense of the United States and places the lives of men and women in uniform at risk -- You may think I'm describing one of the last decrepit dictators of the world.... [But] the adversary's closer to home -- It's the Pentagon bureaucracy -- I have no desire to attack the Pentagon; I want to liberate it. We need to save it from itself."
The next morning, the Pentagon would be attacked, literally, as a Boeing 757--American Airlines Flight 77--smashed into its western wall.
(nothing to see here, folks)
Electoral College so over?
Maryland state senator proposes the state give its 10 electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote. It’s a move he hopes will encourage other states to follow, and would make it unnecessary for a constitutional amendment. California approved such an action but the Governator vetoed it. Colorado and Hawaii state senates approved similar actions.

A mother on parade in propaganda war
HER blonde hair covered with a black headscarf and puffing on a cigarette, Faye Turney enunciated each word carefully to her unseen interviewer.
Her patrol boat had “obviously” trespassed into Iranian waters, she said. But she and her fellow servicemen were being treated well by their “friendly, hospitable, thoughtful and nice” captors.
A letter apparently written by Leading Seaman Turney, 26, in which she says she has written to the Iranian people to apologise for “apparently” entering their waters, was released simultaneously by the authorities in Tehran.
She writes of her hope of being released in time for her daughter Molly’s third birthday party and that she is “well and safe”.
After saying that she and her fellow captives were being fed three meals a day and given a constant supply of fluids she writes: “The people are friendly and hospitable, very compassionate and warm. Please don’t worry about me, I am staying strong. Hopefully it won’t be long until I am home to get ready for Molly’s birthday party with a present from the Iranian people.”
She signed off her letter with 12 kisses - a detail along with all the others that will be analysised by the British Foreign Office.
Her performance, filmed in front of a floral curtain, was immediately called into question: the Foreign Office condemned the footage as unnacceptable and body language experts called into question the sincerity of Leading Seaman Turney’s words.
British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett suggested that the sailor could have been intimidated into making her statements.
The pictures recalled the footage of the party of eight Marines and sailors, seized by the Iranians in 2004, who were paraded blindfolded, led into a ditch and made to endure a mock execution for the cameras.
But diplomats suggested last night that the very different tenor of today’s footage could amount to the start of a climbdown by Iran, which had realised that it had made a mistake and was trying to find a face-saving way out of its embarrassment.
The pictures aired after British Prime Minister Tony Blair was cheered in the House of Commons as he told MPs that it was time to “ratchet up” the diplomatic and international pressure on Iran.
He said that Tehran had to understand its “total isolation” on this issue.
That isolation grew more apparent as Western and Islamic leaders rounded on Tehran.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Iran’s behaviour was “unacceptable”. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, the Nato Secretary-General, called for the Britons’ immediate release, and Ban Ki Moon, the United Nations Secretary-General, was due to take up the issue when he meets the Iranian Foreign Minister tonight.
The gathering pressure on Iran followed the release by the British Ministry of Defence of evidence that the Britons’ vessels had not violated Iranian waters when they were seized last Friday, but had instead been in Iraqi waters.
The MoD backed up its assertion by releasing a photograph of a handheld global positioning satellite device in HMS Cornwall’s Lynx helicopter as it flew over the searched merchant vessel, confirming its position. In a key disclosure Britain took the unusual step of divulging the contents of diplomatic exchanges that immediately followed the “ambush”.
Iran, it emerged, gave coordinates to British diplomats as proof that the Royal Navy had strayed into their waters.
But the compass points given were actually in Iraq’s part of the Gulf Ms Beckett had told Manouchehr Mottaki, her Iranian counterpart, on Sunday.
The Iranians, undaunted, just changed the coordinates on Monday.
Today Mr Mottaki insisted that Britain had to accept that the soldiers were in Iranian waters but he did hint that Leading Seaman Turney would be be released “as soon as possible”.

Iran: Britain must admit entering waters
Iran's foreign minister said Britain must admit that its 15 sailors and marines entered Iranian waters in order to resolve a standoff over their capture by the Middle East nation.
Manouchehr Mottaki's statement Wednesday in an interview with The Associated Press came on a day of escalating tensions, highlighted by an Iranian video of the detained Britons that showed the only woman captive saying her group had "trespassed" in Iranian waters. Britain angrily denounced the video as unacceptable and froze most dealings with the Middle East nation.
Mottaki said that if the alleged entry into Iranian waters was a mistake "this can be solved. But they have to show that it was a mistake, that will help us to end this issue."
# Perspective: Just don't mention the war
# Iran TV shows video of British captives
"Admitting the mistake will facilitate a solution to the problem," he said late Wednesday night in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he was attending a summit of Arab leaders.
It was the first time that Iran has publicly suggested a way to resolve the crisis, but British acquiescence appeared unlikely as the country has been insisting since the crisis began that its troops were in Iraqi waters and released documents on Wednesday to back up the claim.
There was no immediate comment from the British to Mottaki's statement. A call to Britain's Foreign Office in London was not answered early Thursday.
Mottaki also backed off a prediction that the female sailor, Faye Turney, could be freed Wednesday or Thursday, but said Tehran agreed to allow British officials to meet with service personnel.
"We have accepted that (the British request), there is no problem. Measures are underway (to arrange meeting.) They can meet them," he said.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair's government announced it was freezing all dealings with Iran except to negotiate the release of its personnel, adding to a public exchange of sharp comments that helped fuel a spike in world oil prices.
Britain's military released a GPS readout it said proved the Royal Navy personnel were seized 1.7 nautical miles inside Iraqi waters Friday. But Mottaki said Iran had GPS devices from the British boats that showed they were in Iranian territory.
A few hours later, a brief video of the captured Britons was shown on Iran's Arabic language satellite television station, Al-Alam.
One segment showed sailors and marines sitting in an Iranian boat in open waters immediately after their capture.
The video also displayed what appeared to be a handwritten letter from Faye Turney, 26, to her family.
"I have written a letter to the Iranian people to apologize for us entering their waters," it said. The letter also asks Turney's parents in Britain to look after her 3-year-old daughter, Molly, and her husband, Adam.

...Furthermore, the sailors were operating under a UN security council resolution which renewed the mandate of the multinational force last year and is binding on all UN members including Iran. Tehran has so far refused consular access to their detainees and failed to confirm where they are being held. Whether the seizure of the boat crews was the work of an over-zealous local Revolutionary Guard commander, or a carefully laid ambush, is now immaterial. The issue now is the crew's immediate return. Holding on to them would only increase the suspicion that they were being used as bargaining chips for the five Iranians in US custody...
