I thought this was funny. From a letter in the comment section of that same August 1938 issue of The Atlantic.

"'A war is coming,' is it? Who says so? Mr. Roosevelt, perhaps? I don't recall any catch phrases on the subject. Neville Chamberlain, maybe? He's a realist, all right, but he has n't gone that far yet. Daladier of France? I don't think so. Benes of Czechoslovakia? He's still hoping. Benito Puff-Puff and Adolf Fuss-and-Fume? You won't catch them predicting it. The Sphinx of the Kremlin? I doubt it.
You have heard no head of a state predict war. You have read no statement by any head of a state predicting war. The possibility of war, yes; but the certainty of war, no. The rulers are n't sure, you see; only people, who of course know everything.
You take your authority from a public opinion stampeded by the press into a dulled and deadly defeatism. You take it from the vast psychological undercurrent which is carrying us more and more rapidly toward conflict; you allow yourself to be swept along on the tide of a dark and ancient fear in which the elements of excitement and secret anticipation are inextricably mixed...."

+++

See? It's the people and their opinions that get us into wars, just like they make us lose them. Stupid people.

Mutiny On Digg!

By David Ponce

It’s going on as I write this: users over at Digg are throwing a tantrum of unprecedented proportions and turning against the social bookmarking site they usually revere. They have effectively taken control of the home page and are bringing the servers to their knees, and this turn of events could very well cause some irreparable harm to the previously high-flying website. It’s all over HDDVD, AACS encryption, censorship and alleged bribery. Keep reading for the full story.

A few days ago, a hacker at the Doom9 forums published a string of numbers (a hexadecimal string, to be exact) that represents the master AACS key used in encrypting HD-DVD discs. While this number alone does not give anyone the ability to copy encrypted discs, it can be used to build software that does just that. Understandably, people got excited. Someone posted an initial story on Digg and it hit the front page in minutes… but was then deleted, presumably by Digg administrators. So, someone posted a second story that went on to pick up an unprecedented 15,000 votes before also being deleted. By now, it was clear that Digg was being pressured into censoring any story related to this. Users were being banned, stories deleted and censored… and sure enough some resentful articles started appearing. But things were about to get much worse.

Sen. Russ Feingold: After the Veto
The Huffing | Sen. Russ Feingold | May 2, 2007 12:50 PM

The ink on the President's veto is barely dry, and already, a lot of Washington insiders - including some Democrats -- are saying Congress should just give in to the President. Never mind how hard people have pushed to bring Congress to this point, when we are finally standing up to the President's disastrous Iraq policy -- they want to give up on the binding language in the bill requiring the President to begin redeploying troops from Iraq.
But that's just letting the President have his way all over again. That's the kind of thinking that got us into this war in the first place, and it's not going to cut it anymore.

Bush’s Definition Of Iraq Success Called ‘Naive’ By Cheney And ‘Frightening’ By Giuliani »
During the 2004 election, Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) explained that success against terrorism will occur when terrorist acts, such as those in Iraq, are reduced to the level that “they’re a nuisance.” Kerry explained gains can be made against terrorism when “it isn’t threatening people’s lives every day, and fundamentally, it’s something that you continue to fight, but it’s not threatening the fabric of your life.”

For laying out an honest assessment of his counterterrorism approach, Kerry was mercilessly attacked by President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and Rudy Giuliani:

BUSH: Just this weekend we saw new evidence that the Senator fundamentally misunderstands the war against terror. … Our goal is not to reduce terror to some acceptable level of nuisance. Our goal is to defeat terror by staying on the offensive, destroying the networks, and spreading freedom and liberty. [10/12/04]

CHENEY: Nor can we think of our goal in this war in the way Senator Kerry described it yesterday in The New York Times. Quote: “We have to get back to the place,” he said, where terrorism is “a nuisance,” sort of like - and these are his comparisons — sort of like gambling and prostitution. This is naive and dangerous. [10/11/04]

GIULIANI: “In a conference call with reporters arranged by the Bush campaign, Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, mocked Mr. Kerry for comparing terrorism to gambling and prostitution. ‘The idea that you can have an acceptable level of terrorism is frightening,’ Mr. Giuliani said.” [NYT, 10/12/04]

But today in his remarks on Iraq, President Bush — without saying so explicitly — embraced Kerry’s definition of success against terrorism. “Success is a level of violence where the people feel comfortable about living their daily lives.” Watch it:

GOP senator co-sponsors D.C. voting rights bill

WASHINGTON - Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch said Tuesday he's supporting legislation to create new House seats for his home state of Utah and the District of Columbia, boosting chances that after two centuries residents of the nation's capital will get a vote in Congress.

Hatch joined Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., in sponsoring the Senate version of a bill, passed by the House last month, that would permanently add two seats to the 435-seat House, giving one to the Democratic district and another, provisionally, to Republican-leaning Utah.

Most House Republicans joined the Bush White House in opposing the bill, saying the Constitution denies voting rights to a non-state entity such as the district. The support of Utah's two Republican senators was deemed crucial to success in the Senate.

Veto threatened

Hatch said he was mindful of the argument that the Constitution only allows states to have voting members of Congress. The White House issued a statement saying senior advisers would recommend that President Bush veto it if it clears Congress.

But Hatch said Davis and Norton had made persuasive arguments that Congress treats the district as a state in applying laws and the paying of federal taxes. "These arguments lead me to believe it is only fair that we proceed with this legislation and, if it becomes necessary, let the courts decide."

Renzi Breaks Silence: Bush Administration Tried To Rig My Election And ‘Needs To Be Investigated’ »
Late last month, the FBI raided the home of Rep. Rick Renzi (R-AZ) as part of its “two-track investigation” into the congressman “regarding a land deal, as well as a piece of legislation he helped steer that may have improperly benefited a major campaign contributor.” The House Ethics Committee has signaled that it too may now investigate Renzi.

Renzi’s case was opened by former U.S. Attorney Paul Charlton, who was fired as part of the Bush administration’s purge. In Oct. 2006, word leaked to the media about the investigation. Renzi’s top aide, Brian Murray, then called Charlton’s spokesman Wyn Hornbuckle to inquire about the investigation. Such calls are highly improper and potentially illegal.

Yesterday in an interview with Phoenix’s KPNX, Renzi spoke for the first time since the FBI raid and said that he believes he is being smeared by the Justice Department. He refused to take any responsibility for the land deal, instead charging — without any evidence — that the leaks on the investigation were “lies.” He added that “to make that up and put that out means the Department of Justice was engaged in electioneering and that needs to be investigated.” Watch it:

Renzi also defended Murray’s phone call to Charlton’s office, even though calls from lawmakers and their staffs to U.S. attorneys about ongoing investigations are potentially illegal. “All he’s doing is calling the public relations department and saying what is this? What’s going on here? He left a message on a telephone machine,” he stated. Two other ousted U.S. attorneys — John McKay and David Iglesias — also received phone calls from federal lawmakers pressuring them on investigations.

He added that for “anyone to conjure up that this somehow affected Mr. Charlton being fired, is just political theater.”

Tiny terrier saved kids from pit bulls

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- A plucky Jack Russell terrier named George saved five children from two marauding pit bulls, but was so severely mauled in the fight that it had to be put down, its owner said Wednesday.

George was playing with the group of children as they returned home from buying sweets at a neighborhood shop in the small North Island town of Manaia last Sunday when the two pit bulls appeared and lunged toward them, Allan Gay said.

"George was brave -- he took them on and he's not even a foot high," Gay told The Associated Press. "He jumped in on them, he tried to keep them off.

"If it wasn't for George, those kids would have copped it."

One of the children, Richard Rosewarne, 11, was quoted in the Taranaki Daily News on Wednesday as saying George fought with the pit bulls to keep them off his 4-year-old brother, Darryl.

"George tried to protect us by barking and rushing at them, but they started to bite him -- one on the head and the other on the back," Rosewarne said. "We ran off crying and some people saw what was happening and rescued George."

But George was so badly mauled that a veterinarian had to put him down, Gay said.

South Taranaki District Council official Graham Young said the two pit bulls had been impounded, and likely would be put down because of the attack.

In New Zealand, owners of dogs judged to be too aggressive can be required to have them neutered and dogs involved in attacks are destroyed.

For A World Without Borders!, An Article from The New York Rat

Mayday Mayday Mayday!! The international code word for distress, said three times, is the official call-out for immediate help in a life-threatening situation. “A Mayday situation is one in which a vessel, aircraft, vehicle, or person is in grave and imminent danger and requires immediate assistance. Examples of ‘grave and imminent danger’ in which a Mayday call would be appropriate are fire, explosion, or sinking.” Usually, this is a call towards state authorities to intervene and “save” the people at hand.

...

What is a border?

First off, it’s War. Literally, the border is a relic of the Mexican-American war of 1848, when America “bought” half of Mexico’s territory (about 500,000 sq. miles) at gunpoint. The Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo still stands, marking the Rio Grande as the ‘line’ which ‘separates’ us from them. The border is a monument without a museum, doused with techno-media and military machines in order to revive its symbolism with a vengeance. Yet the war never really ended, only moving underground, in shadows, in stealth. Bodies still pile up at the edges, and governments still negotiate new treaties (trade agreements) all the time.

Through such agreements, the border becomes a form of Property. It is enclosure, forming the body proper of the country, its outline, its image in the sand. Once this illusion becomes solidified in the minds of the citizens, its defense becomes unquestionable. Who wouldn’t want to defend their property? The border becomes the consensual hallucination of an imagined community of ‘citizens’ who share nothing but a relationship to what’s “outside.” We’re not them, they say, those are ‘aliens’. If to be an alien means to embody the subversion of their entire system of property, then by all means indict us! Property does not make the border possible, but on the contrary, the border makes all property possible. And with that, Capital as well.

Bush Saves Puppy By Stopping Runaway Truck With Bare Hands

Washington, D.C. - In a story that is sure to boost his sagging political fortunes and rock bottom poll numbers, White House press secretary Dana Perino today released news of the President's heroic actions earlier this morning that averted a heart-wrenching tragedy on the streets of the Capital.

Confirming reports that were first brought to the attention of the public by Fox News and the Washington Post, Perino informed the assembled press corps that "while the President was jogging this morning he noticed a little brown and white puppy dog stuck in the middle of Pennsylvania Avenue. Because the President is a kind man who loves puppies and small children he went to help the little fella but as he got closer he saw that an out-of-control truck was quickly heading toward the hapless canine. Reacting decisively and with the courage we have all come to expect of the President, he jumped in front of the truck and with his tremendous power was able to bring it to a complete stop just inches from the harmless and adorable puppy."

Media reaction to the story was swift. Brit Hume of Fox News declared that "With this simple act of bravery the President has won back the American people."

Terry Moran of ABC said, "People love puppies and they love people who save puppies even more. This is a glorious day for President Bush and the United States of America."

David Broder of the Washington Post remarked, "Tonight, one little puppy is safe and an entire nation rejoices. Thank you, President Bush."

Also weighing in was Chris Matthews of MSNBC who said "This act of courage and strength by President Bush is reminiscent of the time he swam across the Yangtze River."

In a statement released later in the day, the White House said that the little puppy has been named Victory and would soon be sent to Iraq where he would serve as a mascot in the Green Zone.

Republican Party Officially Classified As Cult

Washington, D.C. - The American Psychiatric Association today officially listed the Republican Party as a cultist organization and said that membership in the Republican Party constituted a psychological disorder requiring immediate treatment.

Dr. Frederick T. Collins, one of the world's most renowned psychiatrists and recognized leader in the field of human deviant behavior, commented on this groundbreaking decision by saying, "The American Psychiatric Association had no choice but to list the Republican Party as a cultist group because they fit the profile perfectly. Members of this cult accept the diktats of their leaders without question. They disregard inconvenient facts and believe outlandish stories that even an eight year old child would laugh at. They even have their own system of reinforcement called the Fox News Channel where their fantasies and extremism are constantly fed by a steady stream of misinformation that includes the character assassination of their opponents. We have seen this behavior in other countries at various times in history and the outcome is never good."

The American Psychiatric Association advises all members of the Republican Party to seek professional help from mental health experts as soon as possible.

Central to the debate on immigration has been the appeal to law and order. But behind all the propaganda about respect for the law the core of the anti-immigration movement is about bigotry. Not surprisingly, the laws they appeal to are, in word and practice, unjust and barbaric.

We have heard that we should make a distinction between immigrants on the one hand and illegal aliens on the other. This is a way for the anti-immigration lobby to claim they are not racist or even xenophobic. They simply believe in obeying the law. But forget about the law for a moment. There is no reason why the millions of people who have moved here from Latin America in the last twenty years should be deported or criminalized. No one is being harmed by their presence, and there is strong evidence that we are all benefiting from this influx. So why is it so important to enforce these laws? After all, people violate genuinely serious laws all the time--citizens even. Driving while intoxicated, insider trading, corporate fraud, violating clean air laws are all much bigger problems. So why focus on immigration unless out of ignorance or hate? The truth is, just as with the the bigots of the past who disguised their hatred with the rhetoric of "law and order" when the law was apartheid in South Africa or "black codes" in the American South, the core of the anti-immigration movement today is about hate...

Anonymous said...

We can see this clearly with the conduct of the raids that have swept up thousands of people across the country in recent months. The federal agency under Homeland Security called Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is following the lead of the anti-immigrant activists. It is the agency responsible for incarcerating children and tearing apart families. ICE defends these huge sweeps of so many non-violent people, reminiscent of the internment of the Japanese during World War II, again with appeals to "law and order." Operation Return to Sender, we are told, is not about deporting just anyone; it is about looking for the worst violators of the law; the immigrants who may actually be a burden on our communities, maybe even a danger to our communities. ICE calls them "immigration fugitives"--a nice official-sounding pejorative to add to the collection: "illegals," "aliens," "wetbacks."

Despite these claims, 37% of the 18,149 people arrested nationwide through Feb. 23 were not wanted fugitives; that number is closer to 45% in the San Francisco Bay Area; and more than half of those arrested in the San Diego region were not these fugitives ICE claims to be after. Even the "fugitives" themselves are rarely people charged with any violent or deleterious crimes...

O fleece, that down the neck waves to the nape!
O curls! O perfume nonchalant and rare!
O ecstasy! To fill this alcove shape
With memories that in these tresses sleep,
I would shake them like penions in the air!

Languorous Asia, burning Africa,
And a far world, defunct almost, absent,
Within your aromatic forest stay!
As other souls on music drift away,
Mine, O my love! still floats upon your scent.

I shall go there where, full of sap, both tree
And man swoon in the heat of the southern climates;
Strong tresses be the swell that carries me!
I dream upon your sea of amber
Of dazzling sails, of oarsmen, masts, and flames:

A sun-drenched and reverberating port,
Where I imbibe colour and sound and scent;
Where vessels, gliding through the gold and moiré,
Open their vast arms as they leave the shore
To clasp the pure and shimmering firmament.

I'll plunge my head, enamored of its pleasure,
In this black ocean where the other hides;
My subtle spirit then will know a measure
Of fertile idleness and fragrant leisure,
Lulled by the infinite rhythm of its tides!

Pavilion, of autumn-shadowed tresses spun,
You give me back the azure from afar;
And where the twisted locks are fringed with down
Lurk mingled odors I grow drunk upon
Of oil of coconut, of musk, and tar.

A long time! always! my hand in your hair
Will sow the stars of sapphire, pearl, ruby,
That you be never deaf to my desire,
My oasis and my gourd whence I aspire
To drink deep of the wine of memory.

McClatchy: 'Missouri Was Ground Zero' For GOP 'Voter Fraud' Scam, Thor Hearne and ACVR at Center of Scheme
National Mainstream Media FINALLY Picks up on, Exposes the 'Non-Partisan' 'American Center for Voting Rights' Fraud...

After more than two years of banging the drum here at The BRAD BLOG, it looks as if the national MSM has finally picked up on the fraud perpetrated by Missouri's White House operative Mark F. "Thor" Hearne and his high-level democracy-hating GOP scammer pals in Missouri, at the Department of Justice, and in the White House.

In a McClatchy article just out today, reporter Greg Gordon correctly identifies Missouri as "Ground Zero" in the Republican attempt to establish phony claims of Democratic "voter fraud" in order to institute new restrictions at the polls as part of an insidious ploy to Democratic-leaning voters from being able to cast their vote.

Gordon reports on a number of issues out of Missouri that we've covered here over the years, including; the unsubstantiated claims of "voter registration fraud" against ACORN filed just prior to the '06 election in the Show-Me state; the unsuccessful lawsuit brought by the DoJ against MO SoS Robyn Carnahan alleging more voters on the rolls than actual eligible voters; and the unconstitutional Voter ID law as pushed through the MO legislature as drafted by the slime-ball Hearne.

As well, McClatchy finally outs the supposedly "non-partisan" American Center for Voting Rights (ACVR), as created by Hearne and RNC Communications director, Jim Dyke. We began reporting on ACVR just three days after they went public on March 22, 2005 to testify before then-Rep. Bob Ney's (R-OH) House Administration Committee on Democratic attempts at "vote supression" during Ohio's 2004 Presidential Election.

Gordon finally exposes the ACVR in the mainstream media for what it actually was: Little more than a well-coordinated, (and still-mysteriously-funded) scam to produce public propaganda to support the GOP's insider push in swing states for voter suppression legislation and tactics by Republican officials.

Though the ACVR claimed tax-exempt 501(c)3 status from the beginning (despite their inability to show evidence of same), their "non-partisan" status was neatly embellished several months after they formed when they added "Democrat" Brian Lunde as their Executive Director. As Gordon writes:

Cheney still has 400,000 shares under option. HAL went from under $5,- per share in the last months of 2001, and peaked at over $40,- in 2006.

So his shares went from $2 million in 2001, to $16 million in 2006.

What You Need To Believe To Be A Republican:

Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals, Arabs, and Hillary Clinton.

Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush's daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney and Rumsfeld did business with him, and a bad guy when Bush couldn't find Bin Laden.

Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is Communist, but trade with China and Vietnam is vital to a spirit of international harmony.

The United States should get out of the United Nations, and our highest national priority is enforcing U.N. resolutions against Iraq.

A woman can't be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multi-national corporations can make decisions affecting all mankind without regulation.

The best way to improve military morale is to praise the troops in speeches, while slashing veterans' benefits and combat pay.

If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents won't have sex.

A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle and antagonize our long-time allies, then demand their cooperation and money.

Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy, but providing health care to all Americans is socialism.

HMOs and insurance companies have the best interests of the public at heart.

Global warming and tobacco's link to cancer are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools.

A president lying about an extramarital affair is a impeachable offense, but a president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is solid defense policy.

Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet.

The public has a right to know about Hillary's cattle trades, but George Bush's and Dick Cheney's driving records are none of our business.

Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you're a conservative radio host. Then it's an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery.

Supporting "Executive Privilege" is imperative for every Republican ever born, who will be born or who might be born ( in perpetuity.)

What Bill Clinton did in the 1960s is of vital national interest, but what Bush did in the '80s is irrelevant.

There's nothing wrong with supporting drunken hunters who shoot their friends and blaming the friends for looking too much like quail.

Despite the end of the Cold War more than a decade ago, U.S. nuclear weapons policy remains mired in Cold War thinking. The Clinton administration ignored its historic opportunity to reverse decades of dangerous and provocative nuclear weapons planning, and in its 2001 Nuclear Posture Review (NPR), the Bush administration has taken steps backwards by increasing the roles for nuclear weapons in U.S. policy (see the Related Links box). The Bush NPR calls for the development of new, more “usable” nuclear weapons; for the preemptive use of nuclear weapons against non-nuclear weapon states; and for reducing the time required for the United States to resume nuclear weapons testing.

A Debate Renewed, Columbia University political scientist Kenneth Waltz makes an exhaustive case that "the gradual spread of nuclear weapons is more to be welcomed than feared." Stanford political scientist Scott Sagan replies that nuclear weapons do not prevent human beings from making mistakes but "only make their inevitable mistakes more deadly." This book, a revised and expanded version of their 1995 volume on the same subject, addresses crucial issues in a clear and provocative way that should engage newcomers and stimulate rethinking by those familiar with the subject.

Waltz argues convincingly that the incentives inherent in a nuclear world work vigorously to keep even fierce disputes from turning into armed conflicts and to keep armed conflicts from escalating. "In a conventional world, one is uncertain about winning or losing," he writes. "In a nuclear world, one is uncertain about surviving or being annihilated....When these are the pertinent questions, we stop thinking about running risks and start worrying about how to avoid them."

STOCKHOLM--The former Soviet Union's stockpile of fissile material remains dangerously vulnerable. Six seizures of weapons-grade nuclear materials have been reported over the past 2 years, indicating that a decade-long effort to lock down about 600 tons of Soviet-era highly enriched uranium and plutonium that is considered especially vulnerable--enough raw material for about 40,000 bombs--has far to go. Yet the Bush Administration has proposed cutting $100 million from a raft of programs to improve nuclear security in Russia.

According to the New York Times, Hillary Clinton "has been practicing her salute. As a senator and now as a presidential candidate, she has cultivated relationships with generals and admirals, prepped herself on wartime needs and strategy, and traveled to Iraq and Afghanistan."

Hobnobbing with the brass, says the newspaper, is part of her effort to "shed the image some voters hold of her as an antimilitary liberal, defined by her opposition to the Vietnam War and, now, by her criticism of the Bush administration's conduct of the war in Iraq."

Her criticism of the Iraq war seems to have come a bit late and and bit reluctantly, but the important element is that Hillary knows when the winds are changing direction and to adjust sail accordingly.

Maybe its OK for a politician of a certain age to undergo image change. Goodbye, "antimilitary liberal." Hello, what? Everybody knows who Hillary used to be but nobody knows who she is now.

What do we know about today's Hillary? We do know, if the paper is right, she has a lot of admiral and general friends, we do definitely know she has a lot of rich people friends and we do know the woman has a lot of ‘tude.

Every time you see Hillary she is bristling with attitude. There she is, brisk, commanding, strong, firm of stride, strut of jaw. Ten-HUT!

Did someone on this blog suggest, as a possible reason Sam was changed to Sundays, was his belief Israel wasn't always "right"? After listening to Lionel's show from May 1st, 2007, the blogger could be correct. Lionel is a full-blown backer of Israel, right or wrong, because of "all they have gone throu." I bet the Native Americans would like such a supportive fan base after over 10 million of their population was killed by white Americans, leaving less than 1% of their culture/people alive and even less than that of their land available. How often do we read/hear about their needs/horrors? Native Americans don't have a big, powerful lobby like Israel.

FLORIDA ELECTIONS - "Paper ballot switch gets federal aid"

Excerpts:

"U.S. election officials gave Florida the go-ahead Tuesday to use federal money to pay for voting machines with a paper trail, easing the way for the state Legislature to scrap touch-screen machines in Miami-Dade, Broward and 13 other counties."

"The decision by federal authorities should remove one of the final obstacles to Florida removing the touch-screen machines in the 15 counties that use them, and replacing them with optical-scan machines that rely on paper ballots filled out by voters."

"Incurious George"

Excerpts:

"Poor George Tenet, what an ingrate. Four years after the Iraq war started on his watch at the CIA, two-plus years after he received the Medal of Freedom — and burdened with a $4 million book contract — he whines in print about the way he was misunderstood.

Does anyone remember Tenet being especially noisy or contrary as the intelligence community was trashed for being wrong or inappropriately silent about both the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, or the run-up to the Iraq war?

Tenet sat behind Secretary of State Colin Powell when Powell made his spectacularly unsubstantiated and subsequently empty speech at the United Nations.

Tenet eventually stood up with former Iraq administrator L. Paul Bremer and retired Gen. Tommy Franks to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. How is that for three of a kind?"

Last night, my friends and I went to a ladies only strip club. One of the girls wanted to impress the rest of us, so she pulled out a $10 bill.

When the male dancer came over to us, my friend licked the $10 bill and stuck it to his butt cheek!

Not to be outdone, another friend pulls out a $20 bill. She called the guy back, licks the $20 bill, and sticks it to his other butt cheek.

In another attempt to impress the rest of us, my third friend pulls out a $50 bill and calls the guy over, and licks the $50 bill. I'm worried about the way things are going, but fortunately, she just stuck it to one of his butt cheeks again.

My relief was short-lived.

Seeing the way things are going, the guy races over to me! Now everyone's attention is focused on me, and the guy is egging me on to try to top the $50.

My brain was churning as I reached for my wallet.

What could I do? Ah! but then i had an inspiration!

I got out my ATM card, swiped it down the crack of his butt, grabbed the eighty bucks, and left.

-B had a wicked temper and I think he made some kind of death threat to Sunshine Jim.

Ono menaces people sometimes but then claims that he's only joking but his sense of humor is sometimes macabre.

That isn't necessarily a bad thing but it is probably jarring to new arrivals.

It can put you off to leave you first and only post and have ono tell you what a twat you are.

Have to work late, and after Mike, on comes Dave Barber, AAR has filling SAM'S DAILY SLOT. I heard Lionel the other day. Mr. Green took Sam off for these people.

Just goes to prove, having money has no relationship to being intelligent. Without it, it is not likely he'd survive crossing the street.

I miss Sam. I believe I'm going to have to pull out my stash (the one show I missed during Sam's last week.) Night all.

The recent hurricane and gasoline issues helped prove existence of a new element. In early October [2005] a major research institution announced discovery of the heaviest element yet known to science. The new element has been named "Governmentium."

Governmentium (Gv) has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons, and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.

These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton like particles called peons. Since Gv has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A minute amount of Gv causes one reaction to take over four days to complete, when it would normally take less than a second!

Gv has a normal half-life of 4 years; it does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places. In fact, Governmentium's mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes.

This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Gv is formed whenever morons reach a certain quantity in concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as Critical Morass.

When catalyzed with money, Gv becomes Administratium (Am) - an element which radiates just as much energy as Gv since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons.

Bob Herbert's column "An Invisible War" is good this morning. He breaks bread with Paul Rieckhoff of I.A.V.A., who laments about how oblivious Americans are to the sacrifice of soldiers and their families.
This phenomenon is at the core of an all pervasive sense of sadness and shame of being an American both as a citizen and a veteran.

You wouldn't think it would take 4 years of such limited progress for us to realize that our strategy in Iraq is not working! Whether we pull out or simply change, DRASTICALLY, our strategy, something must change. This war has kept us from addressing other key issues, such as poverty. We have 8 years left to follow through on meeting the Millennium Goals and reducing poverty by half. Let's use some of our energy and resources and causes which actually garner positive results.
