Poetry

This is seconds after Dennis Miller tells O'Riely that no matter who says that there were no wmd and no matter who decides that Iraq was wrong he will always believe they existed and that it was the right thing to do.

When two nutjobs have a conversation like this there is only one word for it. Poetry.

Ah, sweet poetry.

"Perhaps no person can be a poet without a certain unsoundness of mind."

By that logic, O'Reilly and Miller are two of the greatest poets of the age.

Hmmm... This is interesting. As I was driving around Seattle, I surfed the terrestrial radio dial. I found Malloy. He was doing his typical Jew hate schtick. So I accessed Nova M when I walked into the house to make further notes. Nova M isn't carrying him tonight.... Hmmmm....

"Bush's management style allows for incompetence - but not massage"

Excerpts:

"Apparently, a penchant for massages is the one thing that President Bush cannot abide in an underling.

Thus is revealed the management philosophy of the CEO presidency. Favoritism, ineffectiveness and misleading Congress: OK. Massages: Not OK."

Barbara Kellerman, an expert in leadership at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, said it wasn't unusual for people who perceived themselves as tough, top managers to have a hard time firing people.

"They're reluctant to face the music that inevitably ensues. . . . Firing them is openly saying 'I made a mistake,'" Kellerman said. "Whether it's a policy stance or chosen people, rigidity has been a serious issue for this administration."

"If rigidity is the problem, you'd think they could use more massages, not fewer."

Nah, I'm not grouchy. It's just an obscure refrence. In the Marvel comic book universe, when a fan catches a discrepancy between the many convoluted plot lines, they write in, and if the have succesfully reported an inaccuracy, they are rewarded a "no prize"

Has nothing to do with nothing, I was just being whimsical.

An Australian senator has caused a storm of protest for describing a female politician as "deliberately barren" and therefore unfit to govern.

Bill Heffernan said Labor Party deputy leader Julia Gillard did not understand the public because she had no children.

Mr Heffernan first questioned Ms Gillard's childlessness last year, when he queried whether the deputy Labor leader could fully understand her voters because she did not have her own family.

In Wednesday's edition of The Bulletin magazine, he voiced similar remarks.

I love this stuff. Excerpt from "The Illuminati Formula Used to Create an Undetectable mind-Control Slave" by Fritz Springmeier. Fritz is a christian end-times preacher, but he specializes in "de-programming project Monarch mind slaves." He's far out, even by christian end times preacher standards. And that's really saying something. The other ones think old Fritz has strayed from the flock. I've been reading about the insane world of these folks. Simply fascinating. You should try it sometime for a laugh.

During W.W.II, the entire country was mobilized for the war effort and Hollywood was recruited so to speak to help with the war effort. For instance, cartoons were created as training films and as war propaganda.
The military hired thousands of entertainers for USO Camp Shows, Inc. which was under the Special Services Division of the U.S. Army. Bob Hope, who worked for MI-6, British overseas intelligence, was the leading entertainer for USO tours. After the war broke out he went on 12 major overseas tours which took him and his beautiful troop of stunning knock- out girls to every front of the war--from the quiet fronts like Panama to places like Italy and North Africa. To make a long story short, Bob Hope
was used to run messages to programmed multiples for British &
American Intelligence. Later, after the war Bob Hope became a slave
handler. In some of Fritz’s other writings, Bob Hope’s connections to the Illuminati are gone into...

I wonder if Al Franken is a mind-control slave handler when he goes on USO tours? Kinda makes you wonder.

Reflections by President Fidel Castro: It is imperative to have an immediate energy revolution

I hold nothing against Brazil, even though to more than a few Brazilians continuously bombarded with the most diverse arguments that could well confuse even people who traditionally have been friendly to Cuba, we might sound callous and careless about hurting that country’s net income of hard currency. However, for me to keep silent would be to opt between the idea of a world tragedy and a presumed benefit for the people of that great nation.

I do not blame Lula and the Brazilians for the objective laws that have governed the history of our species. Barely 7,000 years have passed since human beings left their tangible mark on what has come to be a civilization immensely rich in culture and technical knowledge. Advances have not been achieved at the same time or in the same geographical latitudes. It can be said that due to the apparent enormity of our planet, quite often the existence of one or another civilization was unknown. For thousands of years human beings never lived in cities with 20 million inhabitants such as Sao Paulo or Mexico City, or in urban communities such as Paris, Madrid, Berlin and others who see trains speeding by on rail and air cushions at speeds of more than 250 miles an hour.

At the time of Christopher Columbus, barely 500 years ago, some of these cities did not exist, or had populations that did not exceed several tens of thousands. Nobody used one single kilowatt to light his/her home. The population of the world at that time was probably no more than 500 million. We know that in 1830, world population reached the first billion mark; 130 years later it had multiplied by three; and 46 years later the total number of inhabitants on the planet had grown to 6.5 billion, the immense majority of whom were poor, having to share food products with domestic animals and from this time onward, with biofuels.

At that time, humanity did not have all the advances in computers and means of communication that we have today, even though the first atomic bombs had already been detonated over two large human communities in a brutal act of terrorism against a defenseless civilian population, for reasons that were strictly political.

Today, the world has tens of thousands of nuclear bombs that are 50 times as powerful, with carriers that are several times faster than the speed of sound and have absolute precision; our sophisticated species could destroy itself with them. At the end of World War II, fought by the peoples against fascism, a new power emerged that took over the world and imposed the absolutist and cruel order under which we live today.

Before Bush’s trip to Brazil, the leader of the empire decided that corn and other foodstuffs would be suitable raw material for the production of biofuels. For his part, Lula stated that Brazil could supply as much biofuel as necessary from sugar cane; he saw in this formula a possibility for the future of the Third World, and the only problem left to solve would be to improve the living conditions of the sugarcane workers. He was well aware – and he said it – that the United States should in turn lift the custom tariffs and the subsidies affecting ethanol exports to that country.

Bush replied that custom tariffs and subsidies to growers were untouchable in a country such as the United States, which is the first world producer of ethanol from corn.

The large U.S. transnational producers of this biofuel, which are investing tens of billions of dollars at an accelerated pace, had demanded from the imperial leader the distribution in the U.S. market of no less than 35 billions (35,000,000,000) of gallons of this fuel every year. The combination of protective tariffs and real subsidies would raise that figure to almost one hundred billion dollars every year.

Insatiable in its demand, the empire had launched into the world the slogan of producing biofuels in order to free the United States, the world’s supreme energy consumer, from all external dependency on hydrocarbons.

History shows that sugar as a mono-crop was closely associated with the enslavement of Africans, forcibly uprooted from their natural communities and brought to Cuba, Haiti and other Caribbean islands. In Brazil, the exact same thing happened with sugarcane cultivation.

Today, in that country, almost 80% of sugar cane is cut by hand. Sources and studies contributed by Brazilian researchers affirm that one sugarcane cutter, a piece-work laborer, must produce no less than12 tons in order to meet basic needs. This one worker needs to perform 36,630 flexing movements with his legs, make small trips 800 times carrying 15 kilos of cane in his arms and walk 8,800 meters in his task. He loses an average of 8 liters of water every day. Only by burning cane can that productivity per person be achieved. Cane cut by hand or by machines is usually burned to protect people from nasty bites and especially to increase productivity. Even though the established norm for a working day is from 8 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon, this type of piece-work cane cutting tends to go on for a 12-hour working day. The temperature sometimes rises to 45 degrees centigrade by noon.

Over the last 45 years perhaps the most popular place for couriers to be signalled to meet was by someone holding a bird in a cage or at a shop with birdcages. The allusion to carrier pigeons is so obvious. Look at a caption "Speaking of WRENS" with a cartoon from Bob Hope’s book I Never Left Home (NY: Simon & Schuster, 1944) written in 1944 during the middle of W.W. II.

http://www.theforbiddenknowledge.com/hardtruth/duyn_1.gif

The cartoon shows Bob chasing a girl with a bird cage and saying, "Tweet, Tweet, Tweet." Hypnotic commands are given 3 times. What seems like a harmless cartoon, is more like a signal telling people that Bob Hope is in charge of a flock of carrier pigeons(couriers),
which we know he was. When talking to a group of soldiers during the
war, Bob said, "In London the bobbies caught a guy walking around in the fog with a bird cage giving the mating call but the American counsel got me."

It was the whiffenpoof mating call.

Otto Preminger, the late director was know for many great movies. Some of his work include Carmen Jones 1954, Anatomy Of A Murder 1959, and Exodus 1950. Like Hitchcock, he was a misogynist and a tyrant on the set. As a matter of fact, he was known to terrorize his actors. Many refuse to speak to him.

Mr. Preminger,( the original old dirty bastard) lived to the ripe old age of 80. He died April 23, 1986. However, he holds the record for the director with the highest number of suicides among his leading ladies.

When Monarch slaves watch television, the shows they watch can relate to their programming in the following ways.

1. First, many of the shows have code words or programming scenarios
which are deliberately in the shows to control the slaves: such as Star Wars, Star Trek, The Wizard of Oz, the Love Boat, Fantasy Island, I Dream of Jeanie (Delta Genie in the bottle programming, and "YOUR WISH IS MY COMMAND" type trigger), The Little Princess, the Miss Universe Contest 1995, Duck Tails (created to control child slaves, with deliberate triggers such as "earthquack"), Bobby’s World cartoon, Steven Spielberg’s Tiny Toons, My Fair Lady (used in several of the slave finishing schools), ET (for alien programming), etc.

+++

The evil Howie Mandel and Bobby's World. It is kind of weird and annoying when he does that baby voice. Now you know why. It's because he's triggering mind-control slaves with it.

Sometimes I think this stuff must be a farce, who could possibly take this seriously. But if you look into it, it's so elaborate, and has that wacky christian flavor to it. But you never know. Also, I think old Fritz is in jail now, in connection with some white supremacist group that blows up abortion clinics or something. What a world.

Are there any HAGABARDS or MOSES?

Now the reader has the FORMULA for the mind control. Now what? These programmed multiples continue to eat away at the moral fiber of every one of America’s Institutions like an army of termites. On the outside the structures still look strong, but they are being readied to collapse, for the reign of the Illuminati’s AntiChrist. There is a series of books called the Illuminati books which are a fictional account of how the Illuminati run the world. In the novels, the Illuminati run essentially everything--which is actually what is happening. The hero, Hagabard fights against this
ancient conspiracy. Who isn’t familiar with the Biblical example of the elite ruler, who leaves his place of royalty to lead a nation in slavery to freedom? This hero’s name is Moses. He also frees the people spiritually from the spiritual bonds of their hermetic magical culture.

If there are any Hagabards or Moses’ or Aarons out there, it is time to buck this World System. "LET OUR PEOPLE GO. LET OUR CHILDREN GO." Thus saith the LORD, Let my people go, that they may serve Me. (EX 8:1b)

Iraqi Blocs Opposed to Draft Oil Bill
By EDWARD WONG and SHERYL GAY STOLBERG
ERBIL, Iraq, May 2 — Kurdish and Sunni Arab officials expressed deep reservations on Wednesday about the draft version of a national oil law and related legislation, misgivings that could derail one of the benchmark measures of progress in Iraq laid down by President Bush.

The draft law, which establishes a framework for the distribution of oil revenues, was approved by the Iraqi cabinet in late February after months of negotiations. The White House was hoping for quick passage to lay the groundwork for a political settlement among the country’s ethnic and sectarian factions. But the new Kurdish concerns have created doubts about the bill even before Parliament is to pick it up for debate.

The issue comes at a delicate moment for Mr. Bush, who on Wednesday began negotiations with Congressional Democrats over a new war-spending measure.

snip

In Iraq, the Kurds have taken issue with a new provision that was quietly packaged with the draft oil law by the Shiite-led Oil Ministry last month. The measure would essentially cede control of the management of nearly all known oil fields and related contracts to a state-run oil company to be established after passage of the law, said a spokesman for the Kurdish regional government.

The spokesman, Khalid Salih, said the provision violated a clause in the Constitution that says the central government must work with regional governments to determine management of known fields that have not been developed. The Kurds, who have enjoyed de facto independence in the north since 1991, have been arguing for maximum regional control over oil contracts.

The provision is part of four so-called annexes that are to be debated with the draft oil law in Parliament. Any objection to one or more of the annexes will stall passage of the law.

“We are worried about these ideas put into the annexes,” Mr. Salih said in an interview in Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan. “It worries us a lot.” If the law and the annexes go to a vote before Parliament, a rejection by the Kurdish bloc alone, which holds 58 of 275 seats, would not doom the law. But Parliament operates by consensus, and members say it is almost certain that no law regarding oil will pass without the approval of the Kurds.

A senior Shiite Arab legislator, Sheik Jalaladin al-Saghir, said the concerns raised by the Kurds amounted to a bargaining tactic. “I think it’s a maneuver,” he said, adding that he believed the Kurds “will move forward to pass the law since everybody needs it.”

Contributing a further layer of complication, a Sunni Arab legislator said Wednesday evening that the main Sunni Arab bloc, which has 44 legislative seats, objected to any discussion of the law in Parliament at this time. “Acceleration in presenting it is inappropriate since the security condition is not encouraging,” said the legislator, Saleem Abdullah. He said Sunni Arabs were also worried that the law would give foreign companies too large a role in the country’s oil industry. Sunni Arab political leaders supported cabinet approval of the draft law, but appear ambivalent now.

White House officials have said passage of the oil law is one of four major benchmarks they would like the Iraqi government to meet before fall.

I Was concerned about this!

Op-Ed Contributor
He’s Impeachable, You Know
By FRANK BOWMAN
Columbia, Mo.

IF Alberto Gonzales will not resign, Congress should impeach him. Article II of the Constitution grants Congress the power to impeach “the president, the vice president and all civil officers of the United States.” The phrase “civil officers” includes the members of the cabinet (one of whom, Secretary of War William Belknap, was impeached in 1876).

Impeachment is in bad odor in these post-Clinton days. It needn’t be. Though provoked by individual misconduct, the power to impeach is at bottom a tool granted Congress to defend the constitutional order. Mr. Gonzales’s behavior in the United States attorney affair is of a piece with his role as facilitator of this administration’s claims of unreviewable executive power.

A cabinet officer, like a judge or a president, may be impeached only for commission of “high crimes and misdemeanors.” But as the Nixon and Clinton impeachment debates reminded us, that constitutional phrase embraces not only indictable crimes but “conduct ... grossly incompatible with the office held and subversive of that office and of our constitutional system of government.”

United States attorneys, though subject to confirmation by the Senate, serve at the pleasure of the president. As a constitutional matter, the president is at perfect liberty to fire all or some of them whenever it suits him. He can fire them for mismanagement, for failing to pursue administration priorities with sufficient vigor, or even because he would prefer to replace an incumbent with a political crony. Indeed, a president could, without exceeding his constitutional authority and (probably) without violating any statute, fire a United States attorney for pursuing officeholders of the president’s party too aggressively or for failing to prosecute officeholders of the other party aggressively enough.

That the president has the constitutional power to do these things does not mean he has the right to do them without explanation. Congress has the right to demand explanations for the president’s managerial choices, both to exercise its own oversight function and to inform the voters its members represent.

The right of Congress to demand explanations imposes on the president, and on inferior executive officers who speak for him, the obligation to be truthful. An attorney general called before Congress to discuss the workings of the Justice Department can claim the protection of “executive privilege” and, if challenged, can defend the (doubtful) legitimacy of such a claim in the courts. But having elected to testify, he has no right to lie, either by affirmatively misrepresenting facts or by falsely claiming not to remember events. Lying to Congress is a felony — actually three felonies: perjury, false statements and obstruction of justice.

Tester calls on top Gonzales aide to resign. “Montana’s senators angrily reacted to a report in today’s Washington Post that acting Associate Attorney General William Mercer worked to alter federal law so that he and a handful of other senior Justice officials could escape residency requirements that governed their assignments as U.S. attorneys.”

The change, approved by Congress in 2006, allowed Mercer to continue serving as U.S. attorney for Montana while working there just three days a month and spending the rest of his time as one of Gonzales’s top aides at Justice Department headquarters in Washington.

The legislation was added to the USA Patriot Act reauthorization — at Mercer’s request — on the same day that Gonzales told Montana’s chief federal judge that Mercer was not in violation of federal residency requirements.

“For months, I gave Bill Mercer the benefit of the doubt that he was shooting straight with me and with the people of Montana,” said Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), who called on Mercer to resign his position as U.S. attorney. … “Mr. Mercer was operating outside federal law, so he had the law changed. That might work in Alberto Gonzales’ Justice Department, but it’s not how we do business in Montana.”

Sure looks that way.

Just a month or so after Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi met with senior Syrian government officials, and was labeled a traitor by Republicans for visiting "a terror state," US Secretary of State Condi Rice is now planning to meet with senior Syrian government officials. Imagine that.

So does Pelosi get credit for the breakthrough in relations, or is Condi a traitor too?

Why don't we just tax every single American taxpayer for the $500 billion cost of the war in Iraq?
by John Aravosis (DC) · 5/02/2007 08:39:00 PM ET

Seriously. Let's just add the charge to everybody's taxes next year, a nice little line-item. Total costs of the war in Iraq will soon be $500 billion, to date, and with 100 million Americans filing tax returns each year (the actual number is somewhat higher, but for the life of me I can't find it), that comes to about $5000 a taxpayer. (And I'm just talking about the actual up front defense costs - the real cost of the war is estimated at $2 trillion dollars, that's four times what we're paying for the defense side of it, so that makes the real cost to taxpayers around $20,000.)

We're paying for it anyway, why not put it in our tax returns so that we're forced to see exactly how much the Republicans' little patriotic venture in Iraq is costing every American taxpayer. Most Americans have no idea what the costs of this war are, in lives, in money, in national prestige. But the one thing we can show, quite personally, is the cost in dollars.

The Iraq war is the biggest tax increase in American history. I'd love to see someone amend the tax code and require a line-item on all of tax forms adding $5,000. Then see how long the war goes on for.

Government Oversight Continues With Halliburton, Cheney & Terrorists
By: Logan Murphy @ 2:44 PM - PDT The Democrats promised to conduct oversight when they took control of Congress and boy, are they delivering. On Monday, the Senate Oversight Committee held a hearing dealing with Halliburton and their exploitation of a loophole in U.S. law that allowed the company to use foreign subsidiaries in order to do business with terrorist states - namely, Iran. This clip shows Democratic Senators Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) grilling Sherry Williams, V.P. and Corporate Secretary for Halliburton about the company's deplorable ethics and questionable practices.

These people have no morals and no conscience. It's all about the almighty dollar, screw the troops and screw the American people. They're going to get thiers no matter where the money comes from and how many people have to die to get it. This isn't new by any means, but getting these scumbags in front of Congress and forcing them to answer for their disgusting business practices is, and it's about time. Enjoy the show…

George W. Bush and a secret service agent are taking a stroll when they come upon a little girl carrying a basket with a blanket over it. Curious, Bush asks the girl, "What's in the basket?"

She replies, "New baby kittens," and she opens the basket to show him.

"How nice," says Bush. "What kind are they?"

The little girl says, "Republicans."

Bush smiles, pats the little girl on the head and continues on.

Three weeks later, Bush is taking another stroll, this time with Karl Rove. They see the little girl again with the same basket. Bush says, "Watch this, Karl -- it's really cute."

They approach the little girl. Bush greets her and asks how the kittens are doing, and she says, "Fine."

Then, smirking, he nudges Rove with his elbow and asks the little girl, "And can you tell us what kind of kittens they are?"

She replies, "Democrats."

Aghast, Bush says, "But three weeks ago you said they were Republicans!"

"I know," she says. "But now their eyes are open."

Dear Rabbi Lerner,

On behalf of the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation and United for Peace and Justice, we are writing to reassert our position and vision for the mobilization that our coalitions are organizing in Washington, DC on June 10-11 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Israel's illegal military occupation of the Palestinian West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. We also would like to express our profound disappointment with your mischaracterizations of the June 10th and 11th actions. In an introductory note that you wrote to an article by Uri Avnery, entitled "How the Anti-Israel Left Helps Perpetuate the Occupation", you state that "many" of the organizers of this mobilization are united around the "dissolution of the State of Israel".

First of all, as you are likely aware, both of our coalitions are working to end those very US policies that support and sustain Israel's military occupation. Neither the US Campaign nor UFPJ prescribe any particular political resolution for the Israel/Palestine conflict. That is because we believe that as US-based coalitions, we need to focus our efforts not on dictating to Palestinians and Israelis how to end the occupation and create a just, lasting and comprehensive peace, but rather on building a movement to reorient our own country's foreign policy so that it supports a just peace based on human rights, international law, and equal rights for all. We take great offense at your implication that our coalitions are helping to perpetuate Israel's military occupation.

Second, your claim that "many" of the organizers of the mobilization are united around the "dissolution of the State of Israel" is inaccurate. As you are likely aware, the only principles upon which the more than 200 endorsing organizations are united on are:

* An end to US military, economic, diplomatic, and corporate support for Israel's illegal military occupation of the Palestinian West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem.

* A change in US policy to one that supports a just peace between Palestinians and Israelis based on equality, human rights and international law, and the full implementation of all relevant UN resolutions.

These are the exact same points of unity with which we approached Tikkun back in December 2006 ...

There is warranted suspicion that he never went to school;
Should we fault him for the policies - or is he just their tool?
The lies keep piling on.

Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya!
Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya!
Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya!
His wreckage will live on.

I have seen him cut the taxes of the billionaires' lone heir;
As he spends another zillion on an aircraft carrier;
Let the smokestacks keep polluting - do we really need clean air?
The surplus is now gone.

Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya!
Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya!
Glory! Glory! How he'll Screw Ya!
Your safety net is gone!

Now he's got a mighty hankerin' to bomb a prostrate state;
Though the whole world knows its crazy - and the U.N. says to wait;
When he doesn't have the evidence, "We must prevaricate."
Diplomacy is done!

Oh, a trumped-up war is excellent; we have no moral bounds;
Should the reasons be disputed, we'll just make up other grounds;
Enraging several billions -- to his brainlessness redounds;
The Doofus marches on!

Immediately the robot starts talking, but this time, about football, NASCAR, baseball, cars, beer, guns, and breasts.

The Bronze Rat

A woman walks into a curio shop in San Francisco. Looking around at the exotica, she notices a very life-like, life-size bronze statue of a rat. It has no price tag, but it looks so striking she decides she must have it. She takes it to the owner: "How much is the bronze rat?"

"Twelve dollars for the rat, a hundred dollars for the story," says the owner.

The woman gives the shop owner twelve dollars. "I'll just take the rat; you can keep the story."

As she walks down the street carrying the bronze rat, she notices that a few real rats have crawled out of alleys and sewers, and begun following her down the street. This is a bit disconcerting, so she begins walking a little bit faster.

Within a couple of blocks, the group of rats behind her grows to over a hundred, and they begin squealing. She starts to trot towards the Bay. She takes a nervous look around and sees that the rats now number in the thousands, maybe in the millions, and they are all squealing and coming towards her faster and faster. Terrified, she runs to the edge of the Bay and throws the bronze rat as far out into the Bay as she can. Amazingly, the millions of rats all jump into the Bay after it, and are all drowned.

The woman walks back to the curio shop. "Aha," says the owner, "I'll bet you have come back for the story."

"Actually no," says the woman. "I came back to see if you have a bronze Neocon."

This economy is eirily similar to this...

A FIRST LOOK AT MACROECONOMICS: THE GREAT DEPRESSION
Before the Great Depression.
Economic Conditions.
Average GDP growth rate was 3.5% per year. The period (1920s to 1929) was one of unprecedented progress and improvement. Unemployment was 3.2% in 1929; average weekly hours had been dropping from 60 in 1900 to 44 by 1929. Average hourly earnings more than double while consumer prices lagged enough to allow an increase in real wages of about 10-20%.

The Stock Market Boom.
The boom had pulled more than 10 million people into the market. A $1000 in 1921 on representative stocks will have $6,000 in 1925, $9,000 in 1926, $11,000 in 1927 and $20,000 by 1928. During June and July of 1929, industrial stock averages went up as much as they had during the entire 1928.

Economic Thought.
Before the Great Depression, economists thought that an economy would tend to operate at full employment (the conditions that exist when everyone who wants to work at the going wage rate can find a job, we will see that this does not necessarily mean that unemployment would be zero). If for some reason the economy departed from full employment, automatic forces would restore full employment equilibrium. They thought that if there were disequilibria in the labor market (i.e., an excess of supply over demand for workers, wages would fall until full employment was re-established). This school of thought -known today as the Classical School- saw no reason for government intervention. Economic thought reflected public sentiment against government intervention. At the time it was thought that just as individuals cannot go on forever spending more money than they earned (by going into debt), the government should never go into debt. This translated into: the government should only spend as much money as it receives in tax revenues and never run a deficit (when spending exceeds tax revenues). Thus fiscal policy (the actions of the government) was very limited and it mainly aimed at maintaining a fiscal balance (no deficit or surplus).

Monetary policy (the actions of the central bank) followed the philosophy of the time. It was considered that the central bank, like the government, should not interfere with the economy and only provide enough liquidity (cash) in response to the needs of the economy: a growing economy requires more liquidity, a contracting economy requires less liquidity. Thus, when the economy was expanding, more liquidity was provided and when it was contracting the central bank would reduce liquidity.

The Great Depression.
What was the Great Depression?

Cummins Confirms That Justice Dept. Used Pregnancy As Excuse To Appoint Griffin
In June 2006, the Justice Department fired Bud Cummins as U.S. attorney in Arkansas and replaced him with Karl Rove-protege Tim Griffin.

In a Dec. 26, 2006 article in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Justice Department spokesman Brian Roehrkasse explained that they “temporarily” appointed Griffin, rather than Bud Cummins’ deputy Jane Duke, because Duke was pregnant:

He noted that often, the first assistant U.S. attorney in the affected district will serve as the acting U.S. attorney until the formal nomination process begins for a replacement. But in this case, “the first assistant is on maternity leave,” he said, referring to Jane Duke, who gave birth to twins earlier than expected the same week of the announcement.

As ThinkProgress noted earlier, on Jan. 11, Sen. Mark Pryor (R-AK) wrote a letter to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and expressed concern with the maternity leave excuse, saying that it “concerns me on several levels, but most importantly it uses pregnancy and motherhood as conditions that deny an appointment.”

Yesterday, the House Judiciary Committee made public Cummins’s written testimony following his March 6 appearance before the panel. Cummins confirmed that pregnancy and motherhood were used as excuses to deny an appointment. He added that Roehrkasse’s statement was “ridiculous” and “mocked” by people in the Arkansas legal community because Duke would have been perfectly able to serve as an interim U.S. attorney “for six weeks or more” if she would have been asked:

I told Elston that most people in our relatively small legal community had instantly mocked that statement because it was obvious Tim Griffin had been here for months for the purpose of taking over on my departure, because no person was aware of any conversations or other communications that might demonstrate that appointing the First Assistant was EVER a consideration, and because even though she actually had left the office a week before (on or about December 14) to give birth to twins, her due date was much later in early February and until she went out for an emergency delivery the week before she had been widely expected to continue to work in the office until February, so she actually could have been available for six weeks or more to serve as an interim had anybody ever considered that option. Nobody had and that was obvious. I told them it was a ridiculous thing to say in light of what many people here knew and that they shouldn’t repeat it.

The Pregnancy Discrimination Act states that employers, including the federal government, cannot discriminate on the “basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions.”

Using discrimination against women as an excuse to install a political loyalist is no better.

US Military Says Senior al-Qaida in Iraq Leader Killed
By VOA News

03 May 2007

Muharib Abdul Latif al-Jubouri's picture on display during Gen. Caldwell's news conference, 03 May 2007

The U.S. military says its troops have killed a senior member of "al-Qaida in Iraq" who was involved in the kidnappings of Americans.

A U.S. military spokesman, Major General William Caldwell, said Thursday that the insurgent group's minister of information, Muharib Abdul Latif al-Jubouri, was killed Tuesday north of Baghdad.

General Caldwell said Jubouri's body was identified through DNA testing and was turned over to members of his tribe. But he said Iraqi authorities then seized the body at a checkpoint.

The general added that U.S. forces have no information to support Iraqi reports of the killings of the head of al-Qaida in Iraq, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, and the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq, Abu Omar al-Baghdadi.

After Iraq Veto, Democrats Back Down on Demands

On Capitol Hill, the Democratic-controlled House has failed to override President Bush"s veto of an Iraq war spending bill that sets timetables for the withdrawal of troops from Iraq. After the override failed, President Bush hosted Congressional leaders from both parties at the White House to discuss a compromise bill. The Washington Post is reporting the Democratic leadership is now backing down and has dropped their demand for including a timeline to bring troops home from Iraq. Democrats appear to be deeply divided over how far to give in to the White House.

Setting An Example listed in Executive Power / Iraq
From CNN yesterday:

It's called the Office of the Commander in Chief, set to be a shadowy entity created by Iraq's prime minister.
Multiple U.S. military and intelligence sources say the office has the power to overrule other Iraqi government ministries ... According to a U.S. intelligence source, the office is "... ensuring the emplacement of commanders it favors and can control." Specifically, removing from command or detaining Iraqi police and army officers perceived as too aggressive in cracking down on Shia militias. Allegations the government vigorously denies.

Where did Maliki ever get the crazy idea of an executive branch office purging officials, empowering blind loyalists, and quietly imposing a political agenda on other government agencies?

Joan Baez banned at Walter Reed hospital

Folk singer and anti-war activist Joan Baez says she doesn't know why she was not allowed to perform for recovering soldiers recently at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as she planned.

In a letter to The Washington Post published Wednesday, she said rocker John Mellencamp had asked her to perform with him last Friday and that she accepted his invitation.

"I have always been an advocate for nonviolence and I have stood as firmly against the Iraq war as I did the Vietnam War 40 years ago," she wrote. "I realize now that I might have contributed to a better welcome home for those soldiers fresh from Vietnam. Maybe that's why I didn't hesitate to accept the invitation to sing for those returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. In the end, four days before the concert, I was not 'approved' by the Army to take part. Strange irony."

Baez, 66, told the Post in a telephone interview Tuesday that she was not told why she was left off the program by the Army. "There might have been one, there might have been 50 (soldiers) that thought I was a traitor," she told the paper.

The Post reported that Walter Reed officials did not respond to requests for comment Tuesday, but that in an e-mailed statement published Monday on RollingStone.com, spokesman Steve Sanderson said the medical center received the request for participation by Baez just two days before the concert.

Rudolph W. Giuliani on Tuesday called Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez a dangerous foe of the United States — even though Giuliani's law firm lobbies for a U.S. branch of a Chavez-controlled oil company.

Giuliani never mentioned his law firm's contract with Citgo Petroleum to a crowd of Latino small-business owners, even as he said it was Chavez's vast oil wealth that gives the Venezuelan a platform for his anti-American activities in the region.

One more and it's to the hair dyer for me...

The question of why Carol Lam was fired is still hanging out there as the evidentiary big enchilada of the US Attorney Purge story. So I want to come back to a story we ran yesterday at TPMmuckraker.com based on new documents released yesterday by the House Judiciary Committee. One of the big problem with the administration's claim that they fired Lam for not following administration policy on immigration enforcement is that they never once mentioned to her that they had any concerns about how she was dealing with immigration matters in her office. Never once. And to us that makes the claim dubious at best since if you're going to go as far as firing someone for refusing to follow administration policy it makes sense that you'd at least once ask them to do something different.

That much you already know.

But someting interesting came out of the documents released yesterday from House Judiciary. These were the writtens answers from the fired US Attorneys in response to queries from committee staff.

According to Lam, after her dismissal she contacted Deputy Attorney General McNulty to ask him why she was fired. According to Lam ...

He responded that he wanted some time to think about how to answer that question because he didn’t want to give me an answer “that would lead” me down the wrong route. He added that he knew I had personally taken on a long trial and he had great respect for me. Mr. McNulty never responded to my question.
If Lam's account is accurate it seems that McNulty was not altogether comfortable with explaining what had happened. But what seems pretty clear is that McNulty himself, the #2 guy at DOJ, wasn't yet aware of the 'immigration enforcement' explanation either. We're supposed to believe that everybody knew of Justice's dissatisfaction with Lam's recalcitrance on immigration matters. And yet the guy's whose job it is to actually run the Department of Justice on a day to day basis (the DAG is something like a COO) didn't seem to have heard about it.

Like in Animal House, the reason for Lam's dismissal seems to have had double-secret status even within DOJ.

Democrats Back Down On Iraq Timetable

Compromise Bill in Works After Veto Override Fails

By Jonathan Weisman and Shailagh Murray

Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, May 3, 2007; A01

President Bush and congressional leaders began negotiating a second war funding bill yesterday, with Democrats offering the first major concession: an agreement to drop their demand for a timeline to bring troops home from Iraq.

Democrats backed off after the House failed, on a vote of 222 to 203, to override the president's veto of a $124 billion measure that would have required U.S. forces to begin withdrawing as early as July.

But party leaders made it clear that the next bill will have to include language that influences war policy.

Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (Nev.) outlined a second measure that would step up Iraqi accountability, "transition" the U.S. military role and show "a reasonable way to end this war."

A President Gone AWOL

"Twelve weeks ago, I asked the Congress to pass an emergency war spending bill that would provide our brave men and women in uniform with the funds and flexibility they need," said Bush in framing his veto message. "Instead, members of the House and the Senate passed a bill that substitutes the opinions of politicians for the judgment of our military commanders."

The problem with Bush's "I'm-so-above-politics" line is that he has been disregarding advice from military commanders since before the war began.

Consider the response to his veto from top military men who commanded troops in Iraq.

"The President vetoed our troops and the American people," says retired Maj. Gen. John Batiste. "His stubborn commitment to a failed strategy in Iraq is incomprehensible. He committed our great military to a failed strategy in violation of basic principles of war. His failure to mobilize the nation to defeat world wide Islamic extremism is tragic. We deserve more from our commander-in-chief and his administration."

The Gipper Won't Win This One

--------------------------------------------

Robert L. Borosage
May 03, 2007

http://www.tompaine.com/articles/2007/05/03/the_gipper_wont_win_this_one.php

Robert L. Borosage is the co-director of the Institute for America's Future. This article was first published in the Chicago Tribune.

As Republican contenders for the presidential nomination gather for their first debate Thursday night at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, they are caught between a rock and a hard place. The vast majority of Americans have given up on George Bush, the sitting conservative president. But the die-hards who still support him are loyal Republican primary voters that no Republican candidate can afford to offend.

The Big Con How can the contenders distance themselves from Bush’s failures without alienating their own base? Expect them to invoke the conservative icon Ronald Reagan early and often. They’ll call for a return to the faith, pledge to follow in the footsteps of the Gipper and promise a new “Morning in America.”

But the Gipper can’t save them. Bush’s signature failures—the war in Iraq, Katrina, Enron and the corporate scandals, failed tax and trade policies, the attempt to privatize Social Security, the posturing around Terri Schaivo and stem cells – can be traced back not simply to the conservative ideology and ideologues that sired them—but to the core conservative doctrine that Reagan championed. The Gipper can’t lead Republican candidates out of the wilderness because, to paraphrase him, his conservatism is not the solution to their problem; his conservatism is the problem.

Over the last six years, with Bush in the White House, Tom DeLay ramrodding the Republican Congress, and Karl Rove focused on mobilizing the Republican base, conservatives have largely had their way. Bush pursued the core ideas of each strand of “movement conservatism” largely to catastrophic effect. In each case, he was simply walking in Reagan’s footsteps.

Election '08: One Long Humiliation Contest

The strangest thing about the premature reappearance of the presidential debates is the palpable, seething contempt they inspired in commentators everywhere, liberal and conservative. One after another, columnists lined up to shit on the candidates, calling them names like phony and desperate and grasping and clown, and rightly so -- for there was something obviously perverse and obnoxious about these terminal ambition cases hogging the airwaves already, pushing us to get on board with their insane power-fantasies a full fifteen months before most of us should even start thinking about the next election.

Failing Conservatives Flail About

Today is the Failure of Conservatism Conference , hosted by Campaign for America’s Future and The American Prospect , which will seek to make the case that “the failures of the Bush administration—from Katrina to Iraq—are more than a matter of incompetence and cronyism. They are a matter of ideology.”

Conservatives, of course, are busy trying to salvage their ideology’s reputation. They are trying to distance conservatism from Bush’s deeply unpopular presidency. And they are looking to shift blame whenever possible.

Transparent shilling for irresponsible corporations is part of what got conservatives in trouble back in November.
