If you missed it, watch Bill Moyer's show on PBS last night on how war is sold. Then listen to a Q&A with Moyers sponsered by the FreePress

Watch Olbermann dismember Rudy.

Enjoy the company. Approving of the President has never been so marginal.

Folks, look at the top of this page, not at Janeane, but at me. You are probably looking at the winner of the Gonzo is Gonzo pool. The question is .... will this be Gonzo for Roveso too. All roads lead to the White House on this one.

Single payer healthcare is actually cheaper, not because of '$800 ambulance rides', but because all the illness and (gosh) expensive surgery that is prevented.

The more accessible hospital care is, the more people will go for checkups, screenings, etc.

If less wealthy European countries can afford it, so can the US.

Ward Churchill's Pacifism as Pathology Reviewed by Patrice Greanville, 4/25/07 - Originally published at Cyrano’s Journal Online

This is a small but indispensable volume for anyone seriously interested in social change, and who sooner or later may have to consider the place of violence in the general scheme of things.

As the title implies, and wasting little time in preparing the audience for what will surely be a disturbing argument to many, the author lays out his case against white progressives—or, to be precise, the liberal/social democratic complacent legions of mostly well-educated middle and upper middle class activists—who are deemed "delusional" not only in the ineffectual tactics and strategies they pursue (which the ruling elites are only too happy to accommodate as per a well-scripted minuet), but in the belief that they are actually performing revolutionary acts...

The crux of Churchill's argument—pretty hard to refute—is that mainstream liberals, and a sizeable contingent of self-defined "Leftists" (read here mostly social democrats) will do anything except assume actual risk in opposing the system...and that, being mostly interested in practicing "comfort zone" politics, they will almost invariably indulge in essentially worthless "cathartic" posturizing instead of solid opposition, all the while vociferously denouncing and browbeating those who would dare suggest more confrontational tactics, including general strikes, active resistance, and so on. Thus the core of his polemic comprises two arguments: (1) That American pacifism has insinuated itself as the only and pre-eminent choice for social change and for oppositional strategies to the empire, and (2) that such a strategy invariably leads to the cul-de-sac of liberalism:

"American pacifism seeks to project itself as a revolutionary alternative to the status quo. Of course, such a movement or perspective can hardly acknowledge that its track record in forcing substantive change upon the state has been an approximate zero. [Hence]...a chronicle of significant success must be offered, even where none exists.<...> For proponents of the hegemony of nonviolent political action within the American opposition, time-honored fables such as the success of Gandhi's methods (in and of themselves) and even the legacy of Martin Luther King no longer retain the freshness and vitality required to achieve the necessary result, As this has become increasingly apparent, and as the potential to bring a number of emergently dissident elements (.e.g., "freezers," antinukers, environmentalists, opponents to saber-rattling in Central America and the Mideast, and so on) into some sort of centralized mass movement became greater in the mid-80s, a freshly packaged pacifist "history" of its role in opposing the Vietnam war began to be peddled with escalating frequency and insistence." (pp 65-6)

What is going on with The Sam Sedar Show, please? It would be nice of the people who are screwing around with the show to let the rest of us in on what kind of bomb they are preparing to drop on us. What Happens After Bush Vetoes the Iraq Spending Bill?

On Jan. 13, during his weekly radio address, Bush challenged those who disagreed with him to offer their own plan for Iraq. Led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Rep. David Obey, D-Wis., and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., Congress met Bush's challenge to come up with an alternative policy.

But instead of seeking the dialogue he asked for in his own radio address, Bush and the Republicans went on the attack, calling the bill "defeatist" and "a cut and run" strategy. The truth is that the measure offers a change of course, not a 180-degree reversal. If Bush and Republicans can't agree to a plan as moderate as the one passed this week, then they really do want a war with no end.

The legislation sets a date to start rolling back Bush's escalation of 30,000 troops and calls for bringing home the rest of the combat troops. Instead of leaving the void that many of the war's bitter-enders predict, the bill would reposition roughly 20,000 to 60,000 troops for counterterrorism missions, protecting diplomats and training Iraqi troops. Finally, the measure sets benchmarks for the Iraqi government to meet in order to continue receiving U.S. financial assistance.

These proposals mirror much of what was contained in the bipartisan Iraq Study Group report released last November. They are also endorsed by prominent members of the military.

Bush Blames the Troops

Blame it on the military but make it look like you're supporting the troops. That's been the convenient gambit of failed emperors throughout history as they witnessed their empires decline. Not surprisingly then, it's become the standard rhetorical trick employed by President Bush in shirking responsibility for the Iraq debacle of his making.

Ignoring the fact that we have a system of civilian control over the military, which is why he, the elected president, is designated the commander in chief, Bush hides behind the fiction that the officers in the field are calling the shots when in fact he has put them in an unwinnable situation and refuses to even consider a timetable for getting them out.

He did it again Monday, responding to the prospect that both houses of Congress seem in agreement on setting guidelines for the "progress" that the president continually proclaims is at hand. "I will strongly reject an artificial timetable [for] withdrawal and/or Washington politicians trying to tell those who wear the uniform how to do their job."

This is disingenuous in the extreme, because Bush is the Washington politician who plotted this unnecessary war from the moment the 9/11 attack provided him with an excuse for regime change in a country that had nothing to do with the terrorist attack.

Dunbar's number

Dunbar's number, which is 150, represents a theoretical maximum number of individuals with whom a set of people can maintain a social relationship, the kind of relationship that goes with knowing who each person is and how each person relates socially to every other person.[1] Group sizes larger than this generally require more restricted rules, laws, and enforced policies and regulations to maintain a stable cohesion. The Dunbar's number is a value significant in sociology and anthropology. Proposed by British anthropologist Robin Dunbar, it measures the "cognitive limit to the number of individuals with whom any one person can maintain stable relationships". Dunbar theorizes that "this limit is a direct function of relative neocortex size, and that this in turn limits group size ... the limit imposed by neocortical processing capacity is simply on the number of individuals with whom a stable inter-personal relationship can be maintained."

Clinton: Iran attack is last solution

Thu, 26 Apr 2007 16:56:01

Hillary Clinton has said if elected as President she would prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear nation even if an attack were a last solution.

Democratic Presidential nominee US Senator Hillary Clinton was addressing members of the Jewish Committee of the Democratic Party Wednesday when she said the US should not reject any options regarding Iran.

"As the last solution, if we are forced to make an attack on [Iran], we want the world to be convinced that it was our last option and not the first," said Clinton, who added she herself would not reject any alternatives as President.

Democratic Presidential nominees have attended the annual meeting of the Jewish Committee during the past three days.

"The Democrats have been loyal to Israel since the presidency of Truman (1945-1953), but I look up to Bill Clinton," she said.

"I will follow Bill Clinton's path and consider the security of Israel, for our relation with Israel is unchangeable," she added.

Iran revels in failed ’80 rescue
By Associated Press

Thursday, April 26, 2007 - Updated: 06:43 AM EST

TEHRAN, Iran - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad marked the 27th anniversary of the failed U.S. operation to rescue 53 American hostages from the U.S. Embassy in Tehran by saying God and Iran had “clobbered the enemy,” state radio reported yesterday.

The Iranian government annually marks Operation Eagle Claw, which ended in a helicopter crash that killed eight U.S. servicemen.

“On such a day, the enemy, using the most advanced weapons, invaded this land. But heavenly aides supported the Iranian nation and clobbered the enemy,” the radio quoted Ahmadinejad as saying.

Hundreds of mostly hard-line Iranians gathered to protest U.S. foreign policy southeast of Tehran at the site where the U.S. helicopter crashed into a plane after the rescue mission was aborted, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

Despair stalks Baghdad as plan falters

Trying to get into the centre of Baghdad earlier this week offered one view of how far away the Americans and Iraqi authorities are from gaining control here.

The Sunni extremists held to be responsible for these attacks seem to be making a mockery of the US and Iraqi security plan, which is now into its third month.

So far, their surge seems to be having more effect than the American one.

Last month alone there were more than 100 car bombings, and the number of attacks has continued at a similar rate so far this month. This indicates a high level of organisation.

This despite the fact that there are many extra US and Iraqi troops in the city now. There are more raids and patrols.

On our drive into the city, we encountered several Iraqi army checkpoints. But almost every vehicle - including ours - was being waved through.

Many new checkpoints have been set up across Baghdad.

But what is their purpose, many Iraqis ask, when they seem to stop so few people?

Politicizing Government Service

Government: A Stepchild of the GOP

During the 2000 presidential campaign, Karl Rove, George W. Bush's political architect, often drew an analogy between that election and the election of 1896, in which adviser Mark Hanna joined forces with many of the plutocrats of that Gilded Age and ushered in a 35-year era of Republican dominance—dominance that didn't end until the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Without a trace of reserve, George Bush and Karl Rove set out to recreate that earlier era of one-party rule. And they pursued their goal by inverting the very purpose of government.

Under this Administration, the federal government has become a stepchild of the Republican Party. And in promoting its partisan interests, absolutely nothing is out of bounds—from our national security to our justice system and everything in between—places that in past Administrations were off limits to political influence.

Principals and supporters of the Bush Administration have taken to attributing its myriad failures to mere incompetence. This is an ironic defense for an Administration that once touted President Bush as the first MBA President and boasted about a cabinet filled with CEOs. ...

From the very beginning, the Bush Administration has seeded the government with highly partisan appointees—people more interested in serving their party than serving the broader public interest.

Almost every senior Bush appointee to the EPA and Interior Department has come out of the very industries they regulate—and which generously fund the Republican Party. As Jim Hightower has noted, this Administration eliminated the middleman. The corporations don't have to lobby the government, because they are the government.

Olbermann: O'Reilly's "real anger and real fear rests in the dread that someone is quoting him correctly"

http://mediamatters.org/items/200704260003

During the April 25 broadcast of MSNBC's Countdown, host Keith Olbermann noted that Fox News host Bill O'Reilly attacked Media Matters for America during the April 23 edition of his television show. Olbermann stated: "Bill O'Reilly has issued another fatwa -- this time against the journalism watchdog website, Media Matters, proving, without the slightest fear of contradiction, that he has a flow chart and the access to the color red." Olbermann observed: "Nothing Media Matters has ever posted about Bill O'Reilly has failed to withstand independent vetting -- not a missing comma, not a missing context." He added: "In an age in which we rightly fear being inaccurately quoted or misinterpreted, it would seem that Bill-O's real anger and real fear rests in the dread that someone is quoting him correctly."

During his show, Olbermann displayed the flow chart O'Reilly had used on his April 23 show -- as Media Matters documented -- to accuse progressive financier George Soros of, in O'Reilly's words, influencing "the political process" by funneling money through his "complicated political operation" to Media Matters, which then "feeds its propaganda to some mainstream media people." Olbermann asserted: "In the Fox News 'Noise' investigation, Media Matters is some sort of major cog in an evil liberal spider web -- one of his guests [conservative talk radio host Monica Crowley] describing it as part of 'an incredibly well-oiled machine.' " In fact, as previously noted, Soros has never given money to Media Matters, either directly or through another organization. If Soros wanted to fund Media Matters, he or Open Society Institute (OSI) -- a grant-making foundation he established in 1993 to conduct his philanthropy -- could simply write a check directly to Media Matters, as he and OSI do with numerous entities.

Olbermann also noted O'Reilly's April 13 appearance on the Irish network RTÉ One's The Late Late Show, stating: "Thanks to Media Matters, you can watch Mr. Orally confronted last Friday the 13th by his own words during an interview on Irish television." Olbermann then played a video clip of the conversation taken from the Media Matters website, which showed Late Late Show host Pat Kenny asking O'Reilly about his reference to the poor as "irresponsible and lazy" and the Iraqis as "prehistoric." O'Reilly replied that he "d[idn't] remember saying that" and challenged Kenny about where he had gleaned that information. When Kenny answered that he "got it off the website," O'Reilly responded by calling Media Matters "an assassination website." He later claimed that Media Matters frequently takes him "out of context." As Olbermann noted, however, Media Matters documented O'Reilly's references to the poor as "irresponsible and lazy" and the Iraqi people as "prehistoric."

Also, despite numerous requests to appear on Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor, O'Reilly still has not extended an invitation to Media Matters President and CEO David Brock to discuss O'Reilly's accusations and ad hominem attacks, nor has O'Reilly offered any evidence for his claims that Media Matters has "distorted comments" made by him or any other media figure.

Dick Cheney's attacks on Harry Reid are as disturbing as they are disingenuous. No one has been more wrong about Iraq from day one than Vice President Cheney.

The Cheney Doctrine has been a recipe for disaster in Iraq that has put American troops in unforgivable danger and made America less secure. The Vice President has only been consistent in his miscalculations and misdirection.

I could hardly believe my ears when the Vice President had the nerve to accuse Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of being uninformed. This is the same man who claimed that we would be greeted as liberators in Iraq and that the Iraqi insurgency was in its last throes, when in fact the civil war was growing.

It is time for the Vice President to return to his secure, undisclosed location to rejoin his neocon friends rather than attack the Majority Leader who is fighting to keep faith with American troops.

THE CHENEY DOCTRINE: UNINFORMED AND MISLEADING

"I think we may well have some kind of presence there over a period of time," Cheney said. "The level of activity that we see today from a military standpoint, I think, will clearly decline. I think they're in the last throes, if you will, of the insurgency."
– May 30, 2005, Larry King Live

"We will succeed in Iraq, just like we did in Afghanistan. We will stand up a new government under an Iraqi-drafted constitution. We will defeat that insurgency, and, in fact, it will be an enormous success story."
– June 25, 2005, CNN Interview

"My belief is we will, in fact, be greeted as liberators."
– March 16, 2003

"There's overwhelming evidence there was a connection between al Qaeda and the Iraqi government. I am very confident that there was an established relationship there."
– January 22, 2004

"We believe Saddam has, in fact, reconstituted nuclear weapons."
– March 16, 2003

"Saddam is actively pursuing nuclear weapons at this time."
- March 24, 2002

"Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction. There is no doubt he is amassing them to use against our friends, against our allies, and against us."
– August 26, 2002

"When you think about what we've accomplished in terms of taking Afghanistan—we had a total of 30 killed in action in Afghanistan—taking down the Taliban and destroying the capacity of al-Qaeda to use Afghanistan as a base to attack the United States, launching an attack into Iraq, destroying the Iraqi armed forces, taking down the government of Iraq, getting rid of Saddam Hussein, capturing 42 out of the 55 top leaders, and beginning what I think has been fairly significant success in terms of putting Iraq back together again, the price that we've had to pay is not out of line, and certainly wouldn't lead me to suggest or think that the strategy is flawed or needs to be changed."

Oregon Governor Lives On Food Stamps For 1 Week
By: Logan Murphy @ 9:02 AM - PDT

Via Yahoo:

If Gov. Ted Kulongoski seems a little sluggish this week, he's got an excuse: he couldn't afford coffee.

In fact, the Democratic governor couldn't afford much of anything during a trip to a Salem-area grocery store on Tuesday, where he had exactly $21 to buy a week's worth of food — the same amount that the state's average food stamp recipient spends weekly on groceries.

Kulongoski is taking the weeklong challenge to raise awareness about the difficulty of feeding a family on a food stamp budget. Read more…

This is so refreshing to see from a politician. I applaud Governor Kulongoski and his wife for doing this and wish more would follow suit. The gap between the wealthy and working class in America keeps getting wider and we know Bush and the Republicans don't give a damn. He's never had to worry about making choices that many of us are forced to make every day such as choosing food and shelter over health insurance and medications. How long do you think King George would last in the real world, forced to live like the average American?

NEW DELHI — A court issued arrest warrants for Hollywood actor Richard Gere and Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty on Thursday, saying their kiss at a public function "transgressed all limits of vulgarity," media reports said.

Judge Dinesh Gupta issued the warrants in the northwestern city of Jaipur after a local citizen filed a complaint charging that the public display of affection offended local sensibilities, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

Gupta earlier viewed television footage of the event, which he called "highly sexually erotic," saying the pair violated India's strict public obscenity laws

Before I forget ....

anyone else notice that the rightwingers have started the 2008 campaign by repeating the number one talking point over and over: the left, the far left, the leftists . ..

I clicked thru all the cable stations on Monday v. fast and within ten minutes "the left" popped up in every single rightwing comment. Its all over the place.

In 2004 it was still "liberal."

Its now the GOP scaring the voters with "the left." In a big way. So far the liberal response: nada and too late - as usual.

I gotta tell you that when he made that statement, it made me pause. Guiliani was on hand for the 911 tragedy and the Tube bombing in London (he was a block away from one of the bombed stations have lunch at a sidewalk cafe.)

To me, it sounded like a threat.

Riverbend is leaving Iraq.

"So we've been busy. Busy trying to decide what part of our lives to leave behind. Which memories are dispensable? We, like many Iraqis, are not the classic refugees- the ones with only the clothes on their backs and no choice. We are choosing to leave because the other option is simply a continuation of what has been one long nightmare- stay and wait and try to survive.

On the one hand, I know that leaving the country and starting a new life somewhere else- as yet unknown- is such a huge thing that it should dwarf every trivial concern. The funny thing is that it’s the trivial that seems to occupy our lives. We discuss whether to take photo albums or leave them behind. Can I bring along a stuffed animal I've had since the age of four? Is there room for E.'s guitar? What clothes do we take? Summer clothes? The winter clothes too? What about my books? What about the CDs, the baby pictures?

The problem is that we don't even know if we'll ever see this stuff again. We don't know if whatever we leave, including the house, will be available when and if we come back. There are moments when the injustice of having to leave your country, simply because an imbecile got it into his head to invade it, is overwhelming. It is unfair that in order to survive and live normally, we have to leave our home and what remains of family and friends… And to what?

It's difficult to decide which is more frightening- car bombs and militias, or having to leave everything you know and love, to some unspecified place for a future where nothing is certain."

Infoshop Interview with Josh Wolf

...
Do you think that the government was using your case to try out new legal strategies against activists? The excuse that the police car was funded by "federal funds," thus federalizing your involvement, could be a new approach by the government to crack down on dissent.

In all honesty, I think it goes a lot farther than simply cracking down on dissent. The fact that the Federal government was able to get involved in this case is a serious threat to state autonomy. If they can make a federal case out of somebody allegedly throwing a firework four days after the fourth of July, then is anything shielded against federal jurisdiction? The San Francisco Police Department receives federal funding; a lot of local agencies get some form of federal funding. If this alone allows them access then this pretext can be used to squash dissent, but it opens the door for all sorts of unsavory investigations against the will of local government and the communities themselves.

I've been doing a little research on displaced Iraqis in- and out-of-country.

The numbers are pretty loose, kinda like the deceased Iraqi numbers. It's not like they take the time to register before they flee or die.

Very roughly speaking, two million Iraqis have skedaddled to Iran and Syria and parts thereabouts. Another two million have bailed from wherever they were in Iraq to wherever they weren't, in some cases more than once. An additional two million are projected to go somewhere they ain't from anywhere they is within the next year. The total number of six million displaced Iraqis through next year is from a nation of 28 million people, not counting deaths since year 2005. My guess is that we are talking about twenty-five percent of all Iraq residents are or will be displaced, more or less.

For the most part, the flee-ers are educated, wealthy, smart or all three. (There's a few goatherds mixed in the bunch but they probably qualify under "smart" considering the circumstances.)

If absolutely everything that the Neocons have in mind for Iraq pans out to be hunky-dory, the end result will be a nation filled with poor people who are not educated nor particularly smart, living in a trashed infrastructure and quasi-governed by infighting factions.

When they need, say, a doctor or a financial adviser, to whom will they turn?

My guess is that they will turn to radical fundamentalists, seeing as there won't be anyone else to fill the void.

"After a full review of your physical and financial health, I advise you to kill Americans and Christians and Jews. Oh, and burn the oil fields, too."

There isn't much left for the rest of the world to do but to listen to the clock tick, inexorably, toward a bigger shitstorm than we could have imagined.

Thanks, Neocons. You have managed to meld your ideology with the predicted certainty that terroristic action would eventually find its way to U.S. soil, and turned the combination into global chaos.

Given the chance, Osama bin Laden would pin his Medal Of Honor on your chests.

CAUGHT ON TAPE: McCain Supported ‘Precipitous Withdrawal’ From Somalia, Haiti
This morning, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), gave several television interviews in which he vigorously advocated staying the course in Iraq. He told the CBS Early Show, “[T]here is progress being made…we’ve got to at least give this new strategy a chance to succeed.”

McCain further claimed, “I don’t recall a time in history while men and women are fighting and sacrificing that one of our major leaders has said that the conflict is lost.” On two separate occasions during the Clinton administration, however, he argued for the approval of legislation guaranteeing the removal of U.S. forces from foreign engagements, regardless of the consequences:

October 1994 — McCain argued for the precipitous withdrawal of U.S. forces from Haiti: “In my view that does not mean as soon as order is restored to Haiti. It does not mean as soon as democracy is flourishing in Haiti. It does not mean as soon as we have established a viable nation in Haiti. As soon as possible means as soon we can get out of Haiti without losing any American lives. [Senate Floor, 10/6/94]

October 1993 — McCain argued against giving any strategy the chance to succeed in Somalia: “Mr. President, can anyone seriously argue that another 6 months of United States forces in harm’s way means the difference between peace and prosperity in Somalia and war and starvation there? Is that very dim prospect worth one more American life? No, it is not.” [Senate Floor, 10/14/93]

I watched this, this morning. Kristol was very uncomfortable with the woman (soldier's wife) caller. The other caller was cut off by the c-span host and Kristol laughed.

War Hawk Kristol Confronted By Military Wife: ‘You All Don’t Understand…We Are People Too’ »
During a C-SPAN appearance this morning, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol was confronted by a military wife living in Ft. Hood, TX, who called in to criticize him for “pushing the war.”

The woman explained the incredible stress of having her husband deployed in Iraq:

I’m sure when your head hits the pillow you have a luxury of dreaming about anything that your mind will allow you to dream about… I sleep with the phone under the pillow. My kids — if someone rings the doorbell, instead of normal kids they freeze. And they’re in elementary school. You all don’t understand. We are military people but we are people, too. And the stress that we are under is tremendous.

While she spoke, Kristol appeared uncomfortable, looking downward and scratching markings into a piece of paper.

The caller also told Kristol that he was a “liar” for claiming that it’s “mostly the insurgents attacking us,” versus members of the Iraqi population. “They don’t want us there,” she said. “I understand you truly believe what you’re saying but it’s not working. We can’t want it for them more than they want it for themselves.” Watch it:

Kristol offered little in response, using the caller’s criticism of the stress she’s under to advocate for a larger Army. He concluded, “The strains on family life are obviously very real…and I hope we do more to deal with that.”

Excerpt

In pivotal New Mexico, by mid morning on November 3, the state election website was missing several returns from areas with large Native American populations: Cibola and San Miguel Counties were missing in addition to one precinct in Dona Ana County with the following close returns listed: Bush: 26 072; Kerry: 25,608
One precinct in McKinley County with the following returns listed: Bush 7,132; Kerry: 12,725

One precinct in Sandoval County with the following close returns listed: Bush: 22,482; Kerry: 21,215

Fifteen precincts in Socorro County with the following close returns listed: Bush: 3,197; Kerry: 2,638

New Mexico was eventually declared for Bush in a close election, even though it went for Gore in 2000.

There were also missing returns from a very close race in Nevada.

Clark County (Las Vegas) had 271,465 people vote early and 220,501 vote at polls on election day.

Kerry received 279,575 votes to Bush's 253, 432 in Clark.

If, as we were told, early votes were breaking 60-70 percent for Kerry in areas he won, it looks like he should have had more like 300,000 votes in Clark County, which would have tipped the state to him.

Tenet: ‘I was a talking point.’ “CIA Director George Tenet says the way the Bush administration has used his now famous ’slam dunk’ comment — which he admits saying in reference to making the public case for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq — is both disingenuous and dishonorable. It also ruined his reputation and his career, he tells 60 Minutes.”

“And the hardest part of all this has been just listening to this for almost three years, listening to the vice president go on ‘Meet the Press’ on the fifth year [anniversary] of 9/11 and say, ‘Well, George Tenet said slam dunk’ as if he needed me to say ’slam dunk’ to go to war with Iraq,” he tells Pelley. “And you listen to that and they never let it go. I mean, I became campaign talk. I was a talking point. ‘Look at the idiot [who] told us and we decided to go to war.’ Well, let’s not be so disingenuous … Let’s everybody just get up and tell the truth. Tell the American people what really happened.”

Maybe Tenet can slam dunk Cheney into prison

War Dog, Iran is not a terrorist state. You are thinking of the Iran of the Ayatola after the ousting of the Shah.

Ahmadinajad isn't very well liked in Iran, but if we attack Iran, the Iranians, of course, will back him.

There are young people (a majoruty now) in Iran that are very westernized and are against the government there now. If we attack, they will stand with their country inspite of what they want and that will cause more problems in the middle east. Take your blinders off and look at the whole picture.

I don't like Ahmadinjad and think he is bad for Iran. But I do think, if we don't attack, that the Iranians will take care of him.

Chris Mathews is going to be the moderator for the Republican debate. Heh! That should be fun to watch! Will he allow the repubs to talk without talking over them?

And who will he fall in love with at this debate?

McCain using ‘bomb bomb Iran’ song at events. Gannett News reporter Chuch Raasch reports from the road in South Carolina, where Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) was campaigning today instead of voting on the Iraq spending bill:

If Sen. John McCain thinks his “bomb bomb Iran” joke last week to the tune of the Beach Boys’ “Barbara Ann” is hurting him, he’s sure not letting on. He’s campaigning in South Carolina today and at both events, the Beach Boys’ “Barbara Ann” was played over the sound system as he was coming on stage? A tweak at his critics, who claim the joke showed McCain was too flip to be president, joking about bombing a country and all that?

McCain told Raasch later that the song was just “staff mischief,” but he “didn’t seem too perturbed about it.”

There is one rule the overrides all others...

Iran will never be allowed to build a Nuclear Weapon..

Everything turns on that one rule..

Iran will only stop if we stop them..

Iran is doing just what I would do in regard to the Nukes..

They have put the ball in our court..

The clock tics down every day..

tonid,

I actually enjoyed seeing all the DEM candidates on that stage together for the first time - lots of diff. issues were covered as you can imagine ... so just some impressions for now

and since from now on Campaign 2008 is getting serious I will leave the bashing of various Dem candidates to the rabid fans on certain sites who don't understand that DEMs must win the White House in 2008 - btw. its not my cup of tea anyway.

Hillary Clinton was excellent - she speaks with confidence, no hemming and hawing ever, her points easy to understand. Bill was an expert at this but she is doing v. well, too, I though. She looked great.
Woman Power!!! YEAH!

Kucinich was fabulous. Glad he is in that race because his voice should be heard loud and clear.

Biden - not bad at all in this first debate. I think if voters don't really know him they will look at him favourably after this . He looked good, anwers were ok most of the time.

Obama - not the smooth talker everyone in the press keeps telling everyone ... but still v. good. LOL@tweety who right after the show ended analyzed Hillary in negative terms but raved that Obama was the most sophisticated speaker - I think thats the word he used. Well. Not really.

tweety was framing the candidates, thats all - he did that in 2004, he is doing it now

Re Israel/Palestine - Obama was v. disappointing - but Lieberman would have loved it. Things got a bit muddled at the end and he had to defend himself and said that he didn't want to nuke anybody.

Well, you have to watch it ...

Edwards - not at his best - was a bit lame and I'll leave it at that before the Edwards people throw cotton balls at me ;-)

I thought Richardson seemed somewhat nervous esp in the beginning. Jumped out at me right away. Was firmly pro gun which I didn't know and I didn't buy his explanation. I am firmly for gun control. I am from the West, too. So. His comments made no sense to me.

Gravel, the Sen from Alaska didn't hold back ... his voice should be heard, too, but he sounded annoyed and lacked control at times - bashed his fellow candidates a few times and complained that he was being ignored by the moderators like a potted plant - and he was right. Not good. They should have let him speak more instead of ignoring him the way they did.

Dodd did okay.

Well, got to let it all sink in a bit.

GO Dem Candidates :)

Sorry Cee Cee.
I couldn't vote for Richardson. There was indeed voter fraud in New Mexico. However, the victims were not the Republicans. Richardson is also a DLC Democrat. Too many Republicans rooting for him.
April 26, 2007 10:24 PM

Thanks for your opinion; I'll have to delve into Richardson a little bit more. What I like about him is that he does have foreign policy experience, values diplomacy, and, he says, he wants out of Iraq immediately. I agree he has the DLC association, but, arguably, placing him in No. 2 may be the bone to throw to quiet the DLC (as if) and attract the Republican (moderate and reasonable-as if there are any left) votes.

Never confuse the ability of US forces to Invade and Kick Ass with our ability to be a Police Force
---------------------------------

Mmmmm, don't think so War Dog. Actually, we haven't been very good at war. We got our butts kicked in Korea. We were warned to stay out of Indo China. And what did we do? Well, we decided to invade Vietnam.
They kicked our butts.

We were warned about Iraq. Didn't listen do our allies, of course. Looks like we're going to leave by the rooftop again.

What we are good at is invading third world, indigenous populations and leaving a mess.

How long do you think the Far East is going to keep financing our wars, old man?

For anyone reading who is not old enough or well-read enough to know how it was in America from 1967 through 1973, here are the facts.

Vietnam was filled with misery and death. By 1967 every American knew the score.

Any young American who did not want to die or have his scrotum rotted off in Vietnam looked toward the alternatives.

College deferments were the first choice. Next came the National Guard (members of which were not shipped to Vietnam), which closed itself from new enlistees. Next came the Coast Guard; same deal.

The only non-Vietnam options that remained were the Navy and the Air Force.

If you joined the Navy, at worst you would become a diver who set charges in a river or a river boat skipper like John Kerry or an aircraft pilot. Everyone else was out of harm's way.

If you joined the Air Force, at worst you would become a pilot over-flying Vietnam or would become one of the unwashed masses who manned the in-country airfields. Everyone else was out of harm's way.

So, when some Chickenhawk speaks of his Vietnam-era service, know the rules.

The rules were this: The Army and Marines recruits got their asses shot off if they hadn't already had them jungle-rotted off.

Air-Force, Navy, Coast Guard and National Guard recruits were running for safe haven. I applaud their good sense. The few who claim to have been brave, gung-ho, patriotic fighters instead of carefully calculating avoiders of misery and death are liars.

Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

One of the most interesting things about lurking here is watching the power that War Dog has over the blog.

He is a very effective troll, although I think that he is also a very sick individual.

He always scores attention when he comes in. He is a master at laying out some essence of right wing nonsense bait that inevitably hooks a fish.

I do think that he is sick by giving us the lies about his big vacation and having been away from the blog when all the regulars who know his writing style and his highly identifiable typing errors, know that he has been here all along.

He merely uses different sock puppet names.

ToniD,

Chris Matthews is a vile little man. Found this on the Daily Howler.

http://www.dailyhowler.com/dh013007.shtml

TUESDAY, JANUARY 30, 2007

MATTHEWS SCANS THE LOBBY: To help you grasp the soul of your “press corps,” let’s return to the charity event we glancingly described in October 2005. (See THE DAILY HOWLER, 10/24/05. Scroll down to “Culture Corner.”) The emcee that night was Kathleen Matthews, then of Washington’s Channel 7. On the way out of the Mayflower Hotel, we saw her husband, TV talker Chris Matthews, chatting with DC journo Mark Plotkin. We don’t know Plotkin, but we know Chris a tad. So we decided to stop for a chat rather than walking on by.

“Tough crowd tonight,” we thoughtfully said. Chris then offered us a look at the odd soul of the Washington press corps. His eyes stared past ours, scanning the Mayflower’s block-long lobby in a classic thousand-yard stare. “I just saw the most incredible prostitute,” he weirdly said. (Instead of “prostitute,” he may have said “hooker.”)

To Plotkin’s credit—again, we don’t know him—he seemed to be just as surprised as we were by Chris’ oddball comment. But Chris wasn’t through with his weird discussion; his eyes continued to scan the long hall as he said something like, “Yeah, you have to ask for the ‘pink sheet’ rooms when you check in.” (Not an exact quote.) At no point did Plotkin seem to think that this was a recognizable topic. For ourselves, we’d have to say it was the strangest thing any man has ever said to us. No, it simply isn’t our experience that men make such weird comments to other men—much less, to men whom they barely know. Men like Matthews apparently think that this is standard male discussion. (We googled and Nexised “pink sheet” the next day. We found no usage which conformed to what Chris had said.)

We mention this oddness, fifteen months later, because we’ve finally come to feel that people simply must get the fullest picture of the people who run their “press corps.” We also mention it in the face of Matthews’ endless rude remarks about Hillary Clinton—rude, sneering, gender-based insults which continue to show one part of the soul of this millionaire cohort. We’ll review Matthews’ most recent such comments later in this post.

Yes, Matthews has a jones about Clinton which just won’t let his soul go. When we hear him make his sneering remarks—and yes, they’ll continue until he’s stopped—we often think back to his conduct that evening. Repeat: In all our years, we’ve never seen a man make such weird, unsolicited remarks about women. People need to ponder hard—how did such odd and empty men ever get into their troubling spot at the top of our national discourse?

IN SEARCH OF THOSE EVIL, BAD MEN: That’s right. Until the day he’s made to stop, Matthews will continue his sneering remarks about Clinton. He’ll call her “Dukakis in a dress.” He’ll say she reminds him of “a stripteaser.” He’ll pretend, as he did last Thursday and Friday, that Bill Clinton has called her an “uppity woman” (text below). These sneering, gender-based comments and insults will be available each evening on Hardball. And this worthless man will sing the praises of the twin virile saints, John and Rudy. He insulted Gore for twenty straight months until he got George Bush to the White House. (“Al Gore would lick the floor to be president.” “Al Gore is Clinton’s bathtub ring.” ) And make no mistake—he’ll degrade and sneer at Hillary Clinton for as long as it takes.

"Those who are interested in the safety and well-being of children should keep in mind that only motor vehicle accidents and cancer kill more children in the U.S. than firearms. A study released a few years ago by the Harvard School of Public Health compared firearm mortality rates among youngsters 5 to 14 years old in the five states with the highest rates of gun ownership with those in the five states with the lowest rates.

"The results were chilling. Children in the states with the highest rates of gun ownership were 16 times as likely to die from an accidental gunshot wound, nearly seven times as likely to commit suicide with a gun, and more than three times as likely to be murdered with a firearm.

"Only a lunatic could seriously believe that more guns in more homes is good for America’s children."

I graduated from high school in 1972, into a prevailing anti-Vietnam war sentiment.

I believe that I have a balanced viewpoint of attitudes during the era. I also believe that I learned, first hand, the difference between an honest and forthright attempt to avoid going to Vietnam and a Chickenhawk's claim to having "served" his country during the war.

Both types had the same motive. One is a liar and the other isn't.
