Thursday: Pelosi Loses The War On Terror

Well friends, it's an embarassment of riches today. Newt Gingrich says that Spanish is the language of the ghetto, then apologizes...in Spanish. (Check it out.) Rush Limbaugh slams Nancy Pelosi for wearing a headscarf in Syria, even though Laura Bush did the same thing when she went to the Middle East. Then Glenn Beck claims that he "can't win," because he's a white Christian human living in America, and most people hate those. He's sure got our number. In fact, today we're welcoming three guests with established histories of hatred for humanity. Blogger Atrios on the news of the day, writer Eric Alterman on Chris Matthews' man crushes, and columnist Spencer Ackerman on Iraq. Down with humans!

WASHINGTON — President George W. Bush named St. Louis businessman Sam Fox ambassador to Belgium Wednesday, a week after a Senate panel signaled it wouldn't confirm the nomination.

The recess appointment bypasses the need for a Senate vote. Fox will serve as ambassador until the end of Bush's term.

Strong opposition from Democrats on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee last week had forced the White House to withdraw Fox's nomination minutes before the committee was to take it up.

$8 billion missing in Iraq - investigators murdered
by Chris in Paris · 4/05/2007 08:19:00 AM ET

Amazingly enough, the Iraqi constitution even allows Cabinet ministers to block investigations into corruption, which they have done. What a shining example of democracy.

Iraq's top corruption fighter said Wednesday that $8 billion in government money was wasted or stolen over the past three years and claimed he was threatened with death after opening an investigation into scores of Oil Ministry employees.

In the chaos and lawlessness of Iraq, such threats are not taken lightly. Radi al-Radhi, who runs the Public Integrity Commission, leads one of the more dangerous missions in the country. He said in an interview that 20 members of the organization have been murdered since it began its work.

In perhaps the most publicized recent case, an estimated $2 billion disappeared from funds to rebuild the electricity infrastructure.

Former Electricity Minister Ayham al-Samaraie, who holds both U.S. and Iraqi citizenship, was convicted in that case and sentenced to two years in prison. He escaped from an Iraqi-run jail in the Green Zone on Dec. 17 and turned up in Chicago on Jan. 15. Al-Samaraie has said the Americans helped him escape.

Iraqi Bloggers

In a recent speech, President George W. Bush drew attention to two bloggers--Iraqi brothers Mohammed and Omar Fadhil; both dentists, living in Iraq--who are posting upbeat messages about the 'improving situation' on the ground in and around Baghdad. The President, in fact, was actually referencing four lines excerpted from a chat room conversation conducted between the two.

Beginning with the lines quoted by the President, here follows the remainder of that chat room conversation, in its entirety:

Mohammed: Displaced families are returning home, market places are seeing more activity, stores that were long-shuttered are now re-opening.

Omar: Yes, we feel safer about moving in the city now. Our people want to see this effort succeed. We hope-- (ding dong!) Hold a moment, the doorbell is ringing. I wonder who could that be.

Mohammed: Go see. I will finish your thought for you. You were going to say, 'We hope governments in Baghdad and America do not lose their resolve…'

Omar: I am returned. Mohammed, you will never guess who is at the door.

Mohammed: Who?

Omar: United States Senator John McCain! He was out walking the neighborhood just now, doing some window shopping and exploring the real estate market. He stumbled upon a pick-up game of basketball, and tells me they are looking for 'two more.' He knows of a Baskin-Robbins ice cream shop along the way--his treat.

Mohammed: Praise Allah! Sounds like fun. For something a bit more filling, though, try the newly re-opened Hummus King.

Omar: No chance. You cannot get a table, what with all the displaced families returning home--HK is booked solid into June of next year. Senator McCain lunches outdoors at Café American most days. He has graciously invited me to join him and General Petraeus there later when the General gets back.

Mohammed: Where is the General now?

Omar: Out riding his bicycle around the city.

Mohammed: Riding his bicycle? Is he crazy?! With gasoline so plentiful and prices so low it’s cheaper, almost, to take his unarmed, unarmored Humvee.

Omar: I agree. He insists, however, on taking his bicycle for the higher profile and greater accessibility it affords him to the Iraqi people. Knowing the General, he is stopped somewhere along Liberation Boulevard right now, chatting up townspeople, swapping American flags for boxes of sweets and expressions of heartfelt and eternal gratitude.

Mohammed: Tell him take great precautions on riding his bicycle! Rose petals can make for a slick riding surface.

Omar: I will tell him. Will you join us later for the outdoor chamber music concert?

Mohammed: Yes. Where is that again?

Omar: George W. Bush Square. Construction on it is complete; tonight will be the dedication ceremony. Richard Perle is cutting the ribbon.

Mohammed: I will pick up Hosni and meet you there.

Omar: Does Hosni not work on Saturdays?

Mohammed: Did work. Have you not heard? He got laid-off from his job down at the morgue. Ever since the American troop surge, business there has fallen off dramatically. Talk about 'dead.' Ha ha…

Omar: lol. Later…

You take a look at what type of hats these two very similer groups of people who are killing each other for whatever insane beliiefs or causes theyre willing to kill and die for, are probably waring different hats. ANd look at the hats their leaders are waring, they ware the real ggofy hats cause theyre the ones giving the orders to kill.

US congressman holds talks in Damascus dpa German Press Agency
Published: Thursday April 5, 2007

Damascus- United States Congressman Darrell Issa held talks
Thursday with Syrian President Bashar Assad on issues of concern to
both Syria and the United States.
Representative Issa, a Republican from California, also met with
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem.

A statement from the US embassy in Damascus said Issa, a Lebanese-
American and a frequent visitor to the region, "looks forward to
continuing the dialogue with Syria on issues of concern to both
countries."

The talks are the latest in a number of visits by members of the
US Congress to Damascus despite objections by the administration of
President George W Bush, which has rejected direct talks with Syria.

Most prominent of the visitors was US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi,
who met Assad on Wednesday in the Syrian capital.

Following his meeting with Moallem, Issa told reporters that he
had a "constructive" meeting with Assad, adding that discussions
covered many issues.

He said the US Congress members who have recently visited Syria
believe that the dialogue they have begun with Damascus "will go on
continuously and constructively."

"I have no illusions. We have serious problems to be resolved, but
we will resolve them," he said.

He said Pelosi has made clear that the US Congress would continue
to carry out fact-finding and to keep the dialogue open. He stressed
that the dialogue would continue "leading to better understanding."

Asked to comment on Bush's criticism of the congressmen's visits
to Damascus, Issa said: "President Bush is the head of state, but he
hasn't encouraged dialogue. That's an important message to realize:
we have tensions, but we have two functioning embassies."

Congressional Democrats, and some Republicans, say the refusal to
talk to Syria has closed doors to possible progress in resolving the
crises in the Mideast.

Drafting Houston City Councilman Michael Berry for Iraq.

Michael Berry is an educated professional, a Houston City Councilman, and a right wing talk show host on KPRC 950AM. On his Tuesday morning show he claimed to have "reamed" Congressman Charlie Rangel (D-New York) disputing his claim that few educated professionals are volunteering to serve in Iraq.

Unfortunately his first caller "reamed" Michael Berry, asking why Berry, who is a young 36 years old, hasn't volunteered for service himself. As an educated professional, he can lead by example and volunteer for combat to support the war in Iraq, support the President, and support the troops by bringing one home. The caller reminded Berry that many of the troops are serving their 2nd or 3rd tours and support from young educated professionals like himself is greatly needed.

And since he is term limited as a City Councilman, he will have the perfect opportunity to show his patriotism, and plenty of time to accomplish the mission.

You can hear the caller here.

But, don't hold your breath waiting for Michael Berry to shoot a gun in Iraq, instead of shooting his mouth off about Iraq. Like most conservative right wingers who claim they support the troops, Berry will probably have as many excuses not to fight for his country, as Bush had to justify the need for him to fight in Iraq.

So, maybe we need to start a Draft Michael Berry campaign so he could have the same opportunity to fight in Iraq just like all young, patriotic, educated professionals have.

P.S. I'm turning blue.

Draft Michael Berry. Oops, he did it again.

It's always just a matter of time when a right wing talk show host sticks his foot in his mouth. Again. Houston City Councilman Michael Berry did it twice. In just two days. On Tuesday he was reamed about shooting his mouth off about Iraq, but not being willing to shoot a gun in Iraq.

And yesterday he continued his war theme, this time against American Indians:

Councilman Michael Berry was saying American Indians don't deserve the federal assistance that they're getting because they “were whipped in a war.”

“We conquered them,” he said. “That's history. Hello?”
I wonder what Berry thinks about the Alamo? Hello? Michael Berry should pick his next fight very carefully because next time he sticks his foot in his mouth, someone might stick a foot up his ass.

Minor point but a lorry is not a "bus"; its a truck:
"Lorry is a British term [for truck] but is only used for the medium and heavy types, i.e. a van, a pickup or a SUV would never be regarded as a "lorry". Or, as they say in Hebrew: Es un camiòn, cabròn, no es autobus.

Now She Speaks: Gonzales Aide Who Pled Fifth Attacks Dems
Washington Post | Dan Eggen | April 4, 2007 08:57 PM

Attorneys for Monica M. Goodling, a senior aide to Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, fired back at House and Senate Democrats today, reiterating her intent not to cooperate with a probe into the firing of eight federal prosecutors and comparing lawmakers pursuing her to the Cold War ideologue, former senator Joseph McCarthy.

In a letter to House Democrats, Goodling's attorneys lambasted Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) and his counterpart in the Senate, Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.), for questioning whether Goodling was hiding criminal activity by refusing to testify before Congress.

If it were me, I'd throw her scrawny ass in jail. Like I said, if she has nothing to hide, why not testify. I think she's afraid of what her "boss" might do to her!

Hi Sam,

Yes, it's long been rumored here in SC that Lindsay Graham is gay. However, I'm assuming the reason McCain took him along on the Baghdad photo op is because Graham is a former military man.

But, per Larry Johson on Olbermann the other night, of all people, they should have known better than to conduct their trip in such a cynical and dangerous fashion!

Enjoying your show so much!

What kind of traitor would continue to protect the real mass murders of 911 by reiterating the false and fraudulent official story over and over again?

NO STEEL FRAME BUILDING IN HISTORY HAS COLLASPED DUE TO FIRE.

NO BUILDING IN HISTORY HAS COLLASPED AT FREE FALL SPEED (10 seconds!) WITHOUT HAVING ITS STRUCTURE BLOWN APART BY EXPLOSIVES.

NO PLANE WAS FOUND AT THE PENTAGON (THE OFFICAL STORY CALIMS IT MELTED!!!!!)

MOLTEN METAL BURNED FOR THREE WEEKS IN THE BASEMENT OF THE TWIN TOWERS. jet fuel??? WE THINK NOT, TRAITOR.

7 OF THE 19 "HIJACKERS" HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO BE ALIVE AND WELL.

TOWER 7 “COLLASPED” IN SPITE OF NEVEr BEING HIT BY ANYTHING.

SILVERSTEIN, THE OWNER/LEASE HOLDER OF THE TOWERS IS ON RECORD (pbs interview) AS SAYING HE ORDERED THAT TOWER 7 BE PULLED. HOW COULD IT BE “PULLED” (DEMOLISHED) IN SHORT ORDER IF THE EXPLOSIVES HAD NOT ALREADY BEEN PLANTED?

ON TAPES OF RADIO TRANSMISSIONS ONLY DECLASIFIED BY THE JUSTICE DEPT LAST YEAR, THE NYFD, CAN BE HEARD SAYING THERE WERE ONLY VERY SMALL FIRES AND THEY COULD KNOCK THEM DOWN WITH TWO LINES OF MEN.

THESE RADIO TRANSMISSIONS ARE CLEAR AS A BELL AND HAPPENED MOMENTS BEFORE THE “COLLASPE”. The radios appeared to be working fine that day.

Those same firefighters said they heard explosions going off in various parts of the building.

Physicist Steven Jones of BYU has published two papers that conclude thermite and/or thermate were used as part of the explosive charges that brought the buildings down. He was asked to retire early. He is a pioneer in fusion research.

The day before 911, Donald Rumsfeld announced the disappearance of over 2 trillion dollars!!!!
The Pentagon was hit exactly where those records were kept. No one has mentioned the missing 2 trillion since.

Most witness statements at the Towers and the Pentagon say that explosions were going off BEFORE the attacks. The clocks at the Pentagon were knocked off the wall and broken five minutes before the “attacks”.

The Smithsonian has displayed one such clock for years now.

You know the truth. FREE THE PEOPLE NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DO IT.

Reflections of President Fidel Castro

The internationalization of genocide

...
Nobody at Camp David responded to the main question. Where and who is going to supply the more than 500 million tons of corn and other cereals that the United States, Europe and the rich countries need to produce the volume of gallons of ethanol that the big U.S. companies and those of other countries are demanding as compensation for their sizeable investments? Where are who is going to produce the soy beans, the sunflower and colza seeds, whose essential oils are going to be converted by those same rich countries into fuel?
...

Where are the poor nations of the Third World going to find the minimal resources for survival?

I am not exaggerating or using untempered words; I am going by facts.

As can be seen, the polyhedron has many dark sides.

Either money knows no party, or, the ad execs at AAR are thinkin' "Go ahead, give us your money, fool. Sure, we'll run your banner ad you miserable excuse for a neo-con boot-licker. Surely running a banner ad on the AAR website will make your poll numbers soar! There are plenty of AAR listeners that can't wait to give John McCain a few bucks."

WATCH!!!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaMxaykpi5o

The day before 911, Donald Rumsfeld announced the disappearance of over 2 trillion dollars!!!!
The Pentagon was hit exactly where those records were kept. No one has mentioned the missing 2 trillion since.

Missing Trillions
Rumsfeld Buries Admission of Missing 2+ Trillion Dollars in 9/10/01 Press Conference
On September 10, 2001, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld held a press conference to disclose that over $2,000,000,000,000 in Pentagon funds could not be accounted for. Rumsfeld stated: "According to some estimates we cannot track $2.3 trillion in transactions." According to a report by the Inspector General, the Pentagon cannot account for 25 percent of what it spends.

Such a disclosure normally might have sparked a huge scandal. However, the commencement of the attack on New York City and Washington in the morning would assure that the story remained buried. To the trillions already missing from the coffers, an obedient Congress terrorized by anthrax attacks would add billions more in appropriations to fight the "War on Terror."

The Comptroller of the Pentagon at the time of the attack was Dov Zakheim, who was appointed in May of 2001. Before becoming the Pentagon's money-manager, he was an executive at System Planning Corporation, a defense contractor specializing in electronic warfare technologies including remote-controlled aircraft systems. Zakheim is a member of the Project for a New American Century and participated in the creation of its 2000 position paper Rebuilding America's Defenses which called for "a New Pearl Harbor."

Florida to restore felons' civil rights By DAVID ROYSE, Associated Press Writer
46 minutes ago

Most felons released from prison will have their voting and other civil rights restored under a rule approved Thursday by Republican Gov. Charlie Crist and the state clemency board.

All but the most violent felons would avoid the need to get on a long list for a hearing before the board, which sometimes takes years.

The board voted 3-1 with Attorney General Bill McCollum, another Republican, strongly objecting.

Crist has made it clear since before he was governor that he was in favor of making it easier for felons who have done their time to vote. He pushed the measure forcefully, and rejected McCollum's assertion that it was welcoming the worst of the worst back into society too easily.

After someone has served their time, Crist said they should get their rights back as a matter of justice.

Still, Crist's plan was a compromise, carving out murderers and other violent felons who would still have to either go before the board for a hearing or at least be subject to review.

Florida is one of three states — the others are Kentucky and Virginia — that still deprive felons of civil rights for life. Most other states automatically restore felons' rights when they complete their sentences, probation or parole.

Amy did a story about ABC Nwes yesterday...

ABC: U.S. Engaged in Secret War With Iran

ABC News is reporting the U.S. is engaged in a secret war with Iran. Since 2005, U.S. officials have been advising a Pakistani tribal militant group with ties to the Taliban on how to carry out deadly guerilla raids inside Iran. The Pakistani group – called Jundullah -- has taken responsibility for the deaths and kidnappings of more than a dozen Iranian soldiers and officials. Most recently, Jundullah took credit for a bus bombing that killed at least 11 members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in February. Officials say the U.S. relationship with Jundullah is arranged so that the U.S. provides no funding to the group, which would require an official presidential order or "finding" as well as congressional oversight. Some former CIA officers say the arrangement is reminiscent of how the U.S. government used proxy armies to destabilize the government of Nicaragua in the 1980s.

April 5, 2007 -- While British Prime Minister Tony Blair is under criminal suspicion in the "honors-for-cash" scandal that has rocked his Labor government, we have been told that there is an even more explosive scandal that Blair, up to now, has managed to hide behind the draconian British policy of issuing "D-Notices," government orders that prohibit the British media from reporting on certain "national security" cases.

In 1999, an international investigation of child pornographers and pedophiles run by Britain's National Criminal Intelligence Service, code named Operation Ore, resulted in 7,250 suspects being identified in the United Kingdom alone. Some 1850 people were criminally charged in the case and there were 1451 convictions. Almost 500 people were interviewed "under caution" by police, meaning they were suspects. Some 900 individuals remain under investigation. In early 2003, British police began to close in on some top suspects in the Operation Ore investigation, including senior members of Blair's government. However, Blair issued a D-Notice, resulting in a gag order on the press from publishing any details of the investigation. Blair cited the impending war in Iraq as a reason for the D-Notice. Police also discovered links between British Labor government pedophile suspects and the trafficking of children for purposes of prostitution from Belgium and Portugal (including young boys from the Casa Pia orphanage in Portugal).

VIDEO: Hundreds Protest Cheney Visit At BYU
The Princeton Review ranks Brigham Young University as the No. 3 most conservative college in the country. In 2004, just 11 percent of voters in Provo, UT, where BYU is based, voted for President Bush’s opponent Sen. John Kerry (D-MA).

But yesterday, hundreds of students protested BYU’s decision to invite Vice President Cheney to deliver the school’s commencement address. The Salt Lake Tribune reports:

More than 200 students attended the College Democrats’ protest, a sit-in next to the campus library with no shouting allowed.

“As much as I’m opposed to Cheney and enjoy demonstrating against his politics, this is a really good chance to show the political diversity of BYU,” said Philip Erickson, a sophomore studying international relations.

But not everyone at the protest was a Democrat. Heather Marsh, a freshman studying neuroscience, held a sign stating, “Republican against Cheney.”

Nearby, a group of Cheney supporters “passed out brownies and asked students to sign a letter thanking the vice president.” Watch a short video clip:

Via TalkLeft, the crew from the documentary “This Divided State” was on hand for the protest, and described this strange scene:

The protests seem to go off without a hitch until things started winding down. NPR left. The local TV news cameras left. The newspaper reporters packed their things and left. And the only people around to document anything were students and our film crew. Our cameras kept rolling to witness what happened next.

As soon as 1:00 hit and the time for free speech expired, after an impromptu performance of the Star Spangled Banner by the BYU Democrats, men from BYU dressed in suits and sunglasses with Secret Service-style earpieces roughly rounded up all of the signage and banners. “You’ll be able to use it all again. We’re just going to keep it for you. So you don’t carry it around campus, we’ll take it to a safe place until the next designated protest.”

It was like Daddy deciding that the kids had had enough play time and was taking their toys away.

Do Americans Know the Whole Truth About 9-11?

A group of scholars have created a website with 20 reasons to question the official story of 9/11

(1) The 9-11 Commission refused to examine the vast majority of evidence about 9/11, and even the former director of the FBI says there was a cover up by the 9/11 Commission.

(2) The tape of interviews of air traffic controllers on-duty on 9/11 was intentionally destroyed by crushing the cassette by hand, cutting the tape into little pieces, and then dropping the pieces in different trash cans around the building.

(3) Investigators for the Congressional Joint Inquiry discovered that an FBI informant had hosted and rented a room to two hijackers in 2000 and that, when the Inquiry sought to interview the informant, the FBI refused outright, and then hid him in an unknown location, and that a high-level FBI official stated these blocking maneuvers were undertaken under orders from the White House.

(4) A retired Air Force Colonel who flew over 100 combat missions and was the director of the Star Wars defense program under both Republican and Democratic administrations (and a member of Scholars for 9/11 Truth) recently said: "If our government had merely done nothing, and allowed normal procedures to happen on that morning of 9/11, the twin towers would still be standing, and thousands of dead Americans would still be alive. That is treason!"

(5) Recently declassified documents show that in the 1960's, the American Joint Chiefs of Staff signed off on a plan to blow up AMERICAN airplanes (using an elaborate plan involving the switching of airplanes), and also committing terrorist murders against U.S. citizens on American soil, and then blaming it on the Cubans in order to justify an invasion of Cuba.

(6) The Secret Service, which is highly trained to whisk the president away from danger and to a secure location in the event of a threat, breached all standard procedures and allowed President Bush to remain at a highly-publicized location for 25 minutes after it was known that the nation was under attack.

(7) The U.S. defense agency responsible for protecting the U.S. had run drills for several years of planes being used as weapons against the World Trade Center and other U.S. high-profile buildings, and "numerous types of civilian and military aircraft were used as mock hijacked aircraft". In other words, drills using REAL AIRCRAFT simulating terrorist attacks crashing jets into buildings, including the twin towers, were run.

(8) The military had also conducted drills of planes crashing into the Pentagon.

(9) On the morning of 9/11, 5 war games and terror drills were being conducted by several U.S. defense agencies, including one "live fly" exercise using REAL planes. And the drills apparently included the injection of false "radar blips" onto the screens of air traffic controllers.

(10) The government was running a simulation of a plane crashing into a building on the morning of 9/11.

(11) While the government has consistently stated that it did not know where the aircraft were before they struck, the Secretary of Transportation testified before the 9/11 Commission that Vice President Cheney monitored flight 77 for many miles as it approached the Pentagon.

(12) A third world trade center building, called building 7, collapsed on the afternoon of 9/11, but was never hit by plane, fell at the same speed as if there were no floors or walls to cause resistance, contained only small fires before the collapse, and became the first steel-frame building in history to collapse due to fire alone.

(13) USA Today stated that the FBI believed that bombs in the buildings brought the buildings down.

(14) MSNBC stated that police officials believe "that one of the explosions at the world trade center . . . may have been caused by a van that was parked in the building that may have had some kind of explosive device in it, so their fear is that there may have been explosive devices planted either in the building or in the adjacent area."

(15) The NY Fire Department Chief of Safety stated there were "bombs" and "secondary devices", which caused the explosions in the buildings.

(16) NYC firefighters who witnessed attacks stated that it looked like there were bombs in the buildings. A NYC firefighter stated "On the last trip up a bomb went off. We think there was bombs set in the building."

(17) The head of a national demolition association stated that the collapse of the towers looked like a "classic controlled demolition."

(18) Eyewitnesses have testified that substantial explosions occurred well BELOW the area impacted by the planes, and -- according to some witnesses -- they occurred BEFORE the plane had even hit.

(19) A police officer testified that there were numerous, HUGE explosions at the top of one of the twin towers 15 minutes apart, before the tower collapsed.

(20) Numerous, credible ex-government officials are warning that the U.S. government might very well attack its own people to justify a further clampdown on civil rights and to justify additional wars.

Breaking: Republican Congressman Darrell Issa Currently In Syria For Talks
The AP reports that Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) met with Syrian President Bashar Assad today in Damascus. And according to the article, Issa criticized the administration while on the visit:

Commenting on Bush’s criticism, California Republican Darrell Issa said the president had failed to promote the necessary dialogue to resolve disagreements between the U.S. and Syria.

“That’s an important message to realize: We have tensions, but we have two functioning embassies,” Issa told reporters after separate meetings with Assad and his foreign minister, Walid al-Moallem.

ThinkProgress contacted Issa’s press office for comment. Issa may defend the trip by claiming it was Pelosi — not him — that “broke the embargo” of meeting with Syrian officials.

With poverty still rampant in the areas that produce terrorists, we are fighting a superficial war in which the terrorists continue come out of the woodwork. Terrorism to me seems a desperate attempt to get attention. Maybe if we were to pay attention to the humanitarian needs in each of these countries, instead of bombing the pants off them, we could actually combat the creation of terrorists.
