B-B-B-But..

We were told this was a crisis!

A couple of things to remember about these social security projections.
1. The social security trustees are appointed by Bush and the CBO numbers project trust solvency into the 2050's

2. Accepting the SSTrustees #'s, if we do nothing, 2041 is the year that social security will be able to only pay out 80% of current benefits well into the 22nd century.

3. Raising the cap on ss taxes from 90k (presently) to about 140k, eliminates the trust shortfalls totally.

4. Bob Dole, in 2000, said one of his greatest achievements when he was in the Senate was pushing the solvency of the trust until 2034.

In other words, there is/was no "crisis" with Social Security. So why did the Republicans and Bush pretend like there was?

5. Republican leaders don't want to return the money they raided from the Social Security trust fund to pay for tax cuts for the rich. And they hate the most succesful Government plan ever... insurance that you won't eat cat food when you retire.

And the new blog is coming. You are going to love it.

Kucinich seeks Cheney impeachment; Americans to rally on Saturday, April 28

In response to yesterday's announcement by Rep. Dennis Kucinich that he plans to file Articles of Impeachment against Vice-President Dick Cheney, Americans across the country will take to the streets on April 28 to express their support for the impeachment of both Cheney and Bush. From Miami, Florida to North Pole, Alaska, more than 100 actions are planned nationwide, with more being added by the hour. Utahans will participate in this national day of action on Saturday, April 28th with an Impeach rally beginning at noon at the Federal Building in Salt Lake City, 100 South State Street. The rally is being organized by the Desert Greens Green Party of Utah and People for Peace and Justice of Utah.

None of the medications really works just right. The feet stuff stings like hell on my winker. The ass stuff doesn't get the job done.

My neighbor gave me a folk medicine cure with apple cider vinegar and glycerin that is guaranteed to work.

I just whipped up the mixture and I'm getting ready to apply.

Rep. Rohrabacher: ‘I Hope It’s Your Families That Suffer’ From A Terrorist Attack »
Last week, a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee held a hearing on the Bush administration’s practice of extraordinary rendition, whereby hundreds of “terror suspects who had never been indicted for any crimes” have been abducted and flown to either secret agency prisons or to foreign countries such as Egypt or Syria where they are tortured.

Throughout the hearing, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) aggressively defended the U.S. rendition program and attacked the witnesses, three members of the European parliament, who testified that rendition actually hinders prosecutions of terrorists.

Rohrabacher told the witnesses that Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann would still be alive if they were in charge. He said the witnesses were free to doubt the motives of U.S. rendition since “I know there’s a lot of people who hate America.”

At one point, Rohrabacher argued that imprisoning and torturing one innocent person was a fair price to pay for locking up 50 terrorists who would “go out and plant a bomb…and kill 20,000 people.” When members of the audience groaned, Rohrabacher said, “Well, I hope it’s your families, I hope it’s your families that suffer the consequences.” Watch it:

LINK

One member of the audience was Army Col. Ann Wright, who served 13 years on active duty and 16 years in the U.S. Army Reserves. “After 16 years in the US diplomatic corps, she resigned in March 2003 in opposition to the war on Iraq.” Wright rose to protest Rohrabacher’s remarks but was quickly removed from the hearing room. You can read her account of the experience HERE.

Poor housing data raise fears for US economy By Daniel Pimlott in New York
Tue Apr 24, 12:20 PM ET

Sales of previously-owned homes in the US plunged by the most in 18 years last month, and consumer confidence also fell, in the latest warning signs for the state of the economy.

Existing home sales fell 8.4 per cent to an annualised rate of 6.12m units. Economists had been expecting a slip to a 6.45m unit rate from the 6.69m originally reported for February. The drop was the worst since 1989.

The National Association of Realtors, which compiles the data, blamed poor weather that kept buyers at home and said the crisis in subprime lending might also be responsible.

"We ... may be seeing some losses as a result of the subprime fallout," said David Lereah, chief economist for NAR.

The poor sales back fears of a weak start to the crucial spring selling season for US real estate companies. Earlier this month KB Homes and DR Horton, two leading builders, reported dramatic declines in profit because of weak demand for new homes. They also said that the subprime crisis could exacerbate the housing downturn.

Prices of existing homes fell across the country, except in the south.

However, the data came after three month of rising sales, and seemed mainly to be a product of unseasonally cold weather in January and February.

"This looks awful but it is surely just the reversal of the favorable weather effects which boosted January and February sales," said Ian Shepherdson, chief US economist, at High Frequency Economics. "In the wake of the subprime blowup it seems reasonable to expect a higher application rejection rate and tighter terms, but they are not visible yet."

Meanwhile, consumer confidence fell to 104 this month from 108.2 in March, below economists' expectations of a reading of 105 and the lowest level since August. High and rising fuel prices were behind the falling confidence, a factor likely to come into play even more next month as recent fuel price rises hit wallets. There were also signs that rising jobless claims and the housing slump were hitting consumers' outlook.

Tuesday's weak data come after worrying reports of poor new homes sales, slackening business investment and a drop in hiring in the service sector. Lower inflation and a stronger-than-expected-start to the earnings season has recently sounded a more positive note.

The housing and consumer confidence figures rattled Wall Street, with stocks dropping following their publication.

Ex-House Aide Snared in Abramoff Probe

By PETE YOST

WASHINGTON (AP) - A former congressional aide pleaded guilty Tuesday to accepting tens of thousands of dollars in gifts from lobbyist Jack Abramoff in an influence-peddling scandal that has touched the White House, Interior Department and congressional Republicans.

Mark Zachares was the 11th person to be convicted in the Justice Department probe.

Zachares admitted engaging in official acts on Abramoff's behalf while working for Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska, who chaired the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

Abramoff assisted Zachares in obtaining his committee post. Zachares left Young's staff in 2005. Young's office did not return repeated phone calls seeking comment Monday and Tuesday.

"Guilty, your honor," Zachares told U.S. District Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle who asked what plea he would enter to a single count of conspiracy. He faces a maximum of five years in prison, but under federal sentencing guidelines will probably face two years or less.

After the court appearance, defense attorney Edward MacMahon declined to say whether Young was aware of what Zachares was doing on behalf of Abramoff.

Zachares agreed to cooperate with the government's continuing investigation and outside the courthouse MacMahon reinforced that point to reporters .

The former Republican aide is the fifth congressional staffer to plead guilty in the Abramoff scandal, including two ex-aides to former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas.

Zachares provided information to Abramoff about pending congressional actions on the reorganization of federal agencies into the Homeland Security Department.

In court, Zachares admitted that Abramoff and his lobbying team supplied him with $30,000 worth of tickets to sporting events and concerts on more than 40 occasions in 18 months from mid-2002 to early 2004.

Zachares accompanied Abramoff and six others including Rep. Tom Feeney, R-Fla., on a $160,000 golf junket to Scotland in 2003, according to the conspiracy count to which Zachares pleaded guilty.

Cheney, who is leading the U.S. to defeat in Iraq, is on the attack against Democrats
by Joe Sudbay (DC) · 4/24/2007 05:25:00 PM ET

Dick Cheney was apoplectic today. No wonder. He truly was the mastermind behind Iraq. And, Iraq is a complete disaster. He and his President got the U.S. in to an unwinnable war that is making us look weak around the world. Yet, the man who is help leading us to defeat in Iraq is accusing the Democrats of having a "defeatist strategy." Seriously, if the Bush team put as much energy in to attacking our enemies in Iraq as they do in to attacking Democrats, we might actually make some progress in their war.

Cheney was clearly firing shots at Harry Reid today. But, we know he's not a very good shot. When asked about Cheney's tirade, Reid was dismissive:
Reid shrugged off Cheney's remarks but with his own dig at the vice president.

"I'm not going to get into a name calling match with the administration's chief attack dog," he said.
Reid's spokesperson, Jim Manley, responded with a statement. What Cheney said was really unworthy of the Majority Leader's time:
Vice President Cheney should be the last person to lecture anyone on how leaders should make decisions.

Leaders should make decisions based on facts and reality, two words that seem to be foreign to the Vice President.

This is the same guy who said Iraq has weapons of mass destruction and that we would be greeted as liberators. And it's the same guy who continues to assert that Saddam Hussein had links to al Qaeda long after our own intelligence agency conclusively refuted this notion. To suggest he lacks credibility would be an understatement.

The Vice President's and others' attacks on those who disagree with their failed policies are signs of desperation. They are lashing out because they know the days are numbered for their failed strategy and that the American people and a bipartisan majority are determined to force this Administration to change course in Iraq.
Nico at Think Progress thoroughly slices and dices Cheney's misleading rant.

Renzi Resigns from Other Panel Seats
By Paul Kiel - April 24, 2007, 6:26 PM
Continuing to backpedal after the FBI raided one of his family busineses last week, Rep. Rick Renzi (R-AZ) said in a statement today that he'll be resigning "all my committee assignments." Renzi already resigned from his seat on the sensitive House Intelligence Committee last week. He also holds seats on the Committee on Financial Services and Committee on Natural Resources.

This past weekend, The Wall Street Journal detailed the tangled business dealings that have investigators probing whether Renzi received a kickback on a land deal.

Here's Renzi's full statement:

"For several weeks, I have been the subject of leaked stories, conjecture, and false attacks about a land exchange. None of them bear any resemblance to the truth.
"So that no one can question the motivation behind the land exchange, which I and other leaders from both parties have argued is critical to the future of Arizona, I have spoken to Congressman Pastor who will introduce a new version of the Resolution Copper land exchange. In addition, I will take a leave of absence from all my committee assignments. I will continue to focus on important district work and issues critical to my constituents."

mmrules, here's more from Justin Rood at the Blotter. He used to be with TPM Muckraker:

Rove Investigator Faces Own Allegations
April 24, 2007 3:43 PM

Justin Rood Reports:

The senior government official who says he is investigating Karl Rove for allegations he influenced government activity for partisan purposes is himself facing allegations of similar behavior.

In interviews yesterday with reporters, Scott J. Bloch disclosed that his Office of Special Counsel was opening a broad probe of the White House political office and its interaction with government agencies. The investigation will cover the use of private e-mail accounts by White House aides, the firing of at least one U.S. attorney and presentations of political data by White House aides to other officials in government, Bloch told the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post.

But government watchdogs have accused Bloch himself of similar behavior. In April 2005, they and others complained the White House appointee had allowed his office to "sit on" a complaint that then-White House National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice used government funds to travel in support of President Bush's re-election bid.

By contrast, they said, Bloch ordered an immediate on-site investigation of a complaint that Bush's challenger for the White House, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., improperly campaigned in a government workplace, which had been filed around the same time.

Bloch's obscure but important office investigates violations of a law banning the use of public resources for partisan political purposes, known as the Hatch Act. In January, his office said Kerry did not violate the act. It has made no statement on the Rice complaint. Bloch's office has called the allegation "old and previously addressed."

Lawyer Charges Power Play by Purged Prosecutor
By Paul Kiel - April 24, 2007, 12:40 PM
Here's the story told by Mark Geragos, Brent Wilkes' lawyer: then-U.S. Attorney for San Diego Carol Lam was so determined to bring an indictment against Wilkes before she was forced from office in February that she leaked details of the case to reporters to force the Justice Department's hand.

You can read the motion to dismiss that he filed in the case yesterday here. Geragos argues that the leaks prejudiced members of the grand jury investigating Wilkes, and that the case should be thrown out.

Wilkes, remember, is one of the defense contractors who allegedly bribed Duke Cunnigham. Lam's office filed two indictments two days before she left office, indicting Wilkes for his dealings with Cunningham and for his dealings with Dusty Foggo, formerly the executive director of the CIA.

Last month, Geragos claimed in court that Lam was "meeting resistance from bosses in the Justice Department, who had rejected drafts of indictments against Wilkes and former CIA official Kyle “Dusty” Foggo, saying they needed revisions." It wasn't clear what Geragos' source for those claims were, and he didn't expand on them in his filing yesterday. Though, as TPM has reported, those bosses did drag their feet on the Cunningham investigation, delaying the approval of indictments for sometimes months.

There's no doubt that leaks did occur. Geragos quotes one of the prosecutors as saying that the leaks were "embarrassing... reprehensible and inexcusable." Whether those leaks were part of "a deliberate campaign by the former United States Attorney, Carol Lam, to use Mr. Wilkes and the other defendants here in her political squabble with the Justice Department’s main office in Washington D.C." and "a gesture of defiance by Carol Lam as she was forced out of office," as Geragos argues, is another matter.

A hearing on the matter is scheduled for May 14.

OVP 2 007
In my post on what I presumed to be Cheney's latest offense, Kagro X asked:

I guess I'm trying to figure out how the outward appearances would be different if the OVP were actually the seat of an espionage ring.

And it's a good question. After all, we know that WH's folks were leaving SCI documents lying around ...

For example, according to one officer, a junior White House aide reported that a senior assistant to the President improperly disclosed SCI to him, even though he had no security clearance.

[snip]

Another security officer reported that a White House official left SCI material behind in a hotel room during a foreign trip with the President.

Such looseness with SCI information is also something John Bolton has been guilty of.

And then there's the prevalence of folks hanging around OVP with clearance issues. Most recently, of course, there has been Wolfie's girlfriend.

As mentioned below, another case we're looking at very closely in the turnover in US Attorney's in the Western District of Missouri. That's where former US Attorney Todd Graves resigned his office in March of last year to be replaced by Brad Schlozman. We'll be bringing you more on Schlozman presently at TPMmuckraker. But before becoming US Attorney he headed up the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division -- where he focused on purging the Division of non-conservatives and generally emasculating voting rights enforcement around the country.

We've been looking closely at the circumstances of Graves' departure. But another reporter on top of this story is Dave Helling of the Kansas City Star. Unfortunately the KC Star's "Buzz" blog is subscription only. (You can at least get a free two week trial. So if you want to follow the situation in this district, I'd suggest signing up.) But in a post that Helling ran yesterday he notes a very suggestive timeline ...

1) Oct. 25, 2005: Schlozman writes Missouri, authorizing lawsuit for failure to maintain voter lists; lawsuit filed later in 2005

2) Jan. 9, 2006: Kyle Sampson writes a memo, listing at least seven U.S. attorneys to be replaced; three of those names are redacted.

3) March 10, 2006: Todd Graves announces departure from U.S. attorney office

4) March 23, 2006: Schlozman announced as replacement as interim U.S. attorney; first U.S. attorney appointed under broadened Patriot Act that exempts him from Senate confirmation

5) October 2006: Schlozman prosecutes four workers for ACORN for allegedly filing false voter registration forms; apparently it's the only known federal case against ACORN in the nation. (At a news conference, Schlozman denies any political motive for the prosecutions.)

The suit to force more aggressive voter purges in Missouri is a story in itself -- and the DOJ pushed this in several other key swing states. There's a lot more smoke here. So stay tuned.

In the Roman Republic, particularly in its last century or so, as the system slid out of control, there was a key interplay between absolute power and legal vulnerability at the center of the political system. A consul had near limitless powers during their one year in office. But if they offended too many people during their term, they could be prosecuted for their acts once they left office.

So as they readied to leave office, consuls would try secure positions or dispensations that would protect them from their enemies.

Our system is different of course. But not altogether so. So as these various investigations move forward -- how are Al Gonzales and Dick Cheney and Don Rumsfeld and a lot of other people ... what arrangements are they making for their safety and immunity after January 2009? Immunity from prosecution in the US? Abroad? We should pay close attention to the details of legislation the White House puts forward over the next eighteen months. You may not be thinking about this issue. But they are.

Voters desert Labour and Tories, says ICM poll

Julian Glover
Tuesday April 24, 2007
Guardian Unlimited

Both Britain's big political parties are under heavy pressure ahead of next week's elections across England, Wales and Scotland, a Guardian/ICM poll published in tomorrow's Guardian shows.
More than one in three voters have turned their back on Labour and the Conservatives and now back the Lib Dems or a smaller party such as the Greens or the SNP. Support for Labour is down one point on last month, at 30%. The Conservatives have dropped four points to 37%.

The Liberal Democrats, campaigning hard to defend half their council seats on May 3, rise three points to 21%. Other smaller parties climb to 12%, including 2% each for the Greens and Ukip.
The poll sets out the landscape across which Labour's next leader - almost certainly Gordon Brown - will have to rebuild support if he is to have a chance of winning a fourth term in power.

A majority of voters, 54%, say the next general election should bring a change of government. Only 21% think Britain should stick with Labour. Labour support is now at bedrock. The party has only twice scored below 30% in the Guardian/ICM series, which began in 1984. Over a quarter of the people who say they voted Labour in 2005 have switched to either the Conservatives or LibDems.

It is now more than a year since Labour led the Conservatives in a Guardian/ICM poll. The seven-point Tory lead, the narrowest recorded by the Guardian since January, would probably leave the Conservatives as the largest party in the Commons, although it would be well short of a majority.

So what state borders the state of denial? I don't personally know, but you have to be past denial to partake in a charade like this.

George McGovern: "I Expect To See Cheney And Bush Forced To Resign"
LA Times | George S. McGovern | April 24, 2007 09:57 AM

Vice President Dick Cheney recently attacked my 1972 presidential platform and contended that today's Democratic Party has reverted to the views I advocated in 1972. In a sense, this is a compliment, both to me and the Democratic Party. Cheney intended no such compliment. Instead, he twisted my views and those of my party beyond recognition. The city where the vice president spoke, Chicago, is sometimes dubbed "the Windy City." Cheney converted the chilly wind of Chicago into hot air.

Cheney said that today's Democrats have adopted my platform from the 1972 presidential race and that, in doing so, they will raise taxes. But my platform offered a balanced budget. I proposed nothing new without a carefully defined way of paying for it. By contrast, Cheney and his team have run the national debt to an all-time high.

Wednesday on Bill Moyers Journal - "Buying the War"

“This gutsy program is essential viewing for explaining
how punditry often overshadows journalism on television.”
- Orlando Sentinel

"Every American should watch it, especially those, like me, who naïvely bought into
a war sold on false pretenses.... Much on television is junk. I’d call 'Buying the War' must-see TV."
- Providence Journal

"It takes us through its argument free of hyperbole...
This is the kind of work that should be shown to journalism students as a warning about
how dangerous a cowed press can be to democracy's health."
- Seattle Post-Intelligencer

How the administration marketed the war to the American people has been well covered, but critical questions remain: How and why did the press buy it, and what does it say about the role of journalists in helping the public sort out fact from propaganda?

On Wednesday, April 25 at 9 P.M. on PBS (check local listings), watch "Buying the War," a 90-minute documentary that explores the role of the press in the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq, which includes interviews with Dan Rather, formerly of CBS; Tim Russert of Meet the Press; and Walter Isaacson, former chairman and CEO of CNN.

Two days later on April 27, Bill Moyers Journal airs in its regular timeslot on Fridays (check local listings).

Friday on Bill Moyers Journal
Jon Stewart, host of Comedy Central's The Daily Show

Josh Marshall, publisher of Talking Points Memo
On The Moyers Blog:
Discuss "Buying the War" with Jonathan Landay and Warren Strobel of Knight Ridder (now McClatchy) immediately following the broadcast.

Watch a clip from the premiere episode of Bill Moyers Journal on PBS, as Bob Simon of 60 Minutes, who was based in the Middle East, talks about the reporting he was seeing and reading out of the beltway, and Knight Ridder's John Walcott and Warren Strobel discuss their work burrowing deep into the intelligence agencies to determine whether there was any evidence for the Bush Administration's case for war.

Respond to Bill Moyers who considers John Walcott's take on the role of the press in the lead-up to the war in a speech Walcott recently delivered.

Mexico City officials legalize abortion

Mexico City lawmakers voted to legalize abortion Tuesday, a decision likely to influence policies and health practices across Mexico and other parts of heavily Roman Catholic Latin America.

The proposal, approved 46-19, with one abstention, will take effect with the expected signing by the city’s leftist mayor. Abortion opponents have already vowed to appeal the law to the Supreme Court, a move likely to extend the bitter and emotional debate in this predominantly Catholic nation.

There are an estimated 200,000 illegal abortions in Mexico each year.

Of women who opt for illegal procedures, at least 1,500 women die during botched operations performed in unhygienic backstreet clinics.

Many victims of rape are denied access to legal abortion, a Human Rights Watch report said last year.

The Mexico City assembly has courted controversy in Mexico before: it recently voted to allow same-sex civil unions and is currently considering legalising euthanasia.

Hammer Horror Lyrics
Artist(Band):Kate Bush
Review The Song (0)
Print the Lyrics

Send Kate Bush polyphonic ringtone to your cell phone

You stood in the belltower,
But now you're gone.
So who knows all the sights
Of Notre Dame?

They've got the stars for the gallant hearts.
I'm the replacement for your part.
But all I want to do is forget
You, friend.

Hammer Horror, Hammer Horror,
Won't leave me alone.
The first time in my life,
I leave the lights on
To ease my soul.
Hammer Horror, Hammer Horror,
Won't leave it alone.
I don't know,
Is this the right thing to do?

Rehearsing in your things,
I feel guilty.
And retracing all the scenes,
Of your big hit,
Oh, God, you needed the leading role.
It wasn't me who made you go, though.
Now all I want to do is forget
You, friend.

Hammer Horror, Hammer Horror,
Won't leave me alone.
The first time in my life,
I leave the lights on
To ease my soul.
Hammer Horror, Hammer Horror,
Won't leave it alone.
I don't know,
Is this the right thing to do?

Who calls me from the other side
Of the street?
And who taps me on the shoulder?
I turn around, but you're gone.

I've got a hunch that you're following,
To get your own back on me.
So all I want to do is forget
You, friend.

Hammer Horror, Hammer Horror,
Won't leave me alone.
The first time in my life,
I leave the lights on
To ease my soul.
Hammer Horror, Hammer Horror,
Won't leave it alone.
I don't know,
Is this the right thing to do?

That proves nothing. Nothing. People have been good and kind all their lives and still have problems. That's part of life.

Prove to me that my words about a person will come back to me tenfold when there are people that are pure evil that have bad thoughts of other people and never suffer for it. Explain that to me.

Immigration Bill Advances the North American Union

Delivering a wide-ranging attack on the Bush-backed amnesty scheme, Royce said that one of the laughable “enforcement” provisions of the bill requires that illegal aliens caught in the U.S. be provided with individual and group counseling, recreational programs, special religious services, private toilet and shower facilities, and clothes that are not “prison-style uniforms or jumpsuits.” Under the bill, he continued, amnesty recipients will receive Social Security benefits......

Jason Leopold | Rove Investigator Himself Under Investigation

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/042407U.shtml

A federal investigation into the
political activities of Karl Rove, was announced late Tuesday, is being headed by a Bush appointee who is currently the target of an internal White House probe - calling into question the integrity of the administration's efforts to conduct an independent review of Rove's work as White House political adviser.

Emergency Powers to Govern World "Regions"

The American military forces, according to Federal law, are used in the common interest of the United Nations. Our young men and women, who no longer serve on American soil, in protection of American people, or in defense of the American nation, operate under the auspices and direction of the United Nations charter. Hence, the American military forces are no longer here – nor have they been for many, many decades. All service is now filtered through the United Nations.......

Gates comments ‘raised hackles’ at White House. “Twice now in the past week, Defense Secretary Gates has raised hackles at the White House with headline-making comments on Iraq that sounded a different note from the official line,” saying that the congressional Iraq timeline debate has been helpful, and that the “clock is ticking” for the Iraqi government to make political progress.

Gates’s comments…unsettled Iraq strategists on the Bush team who fear that too many signals about the limits of U.S. patience could backfire, rather than induce the government of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to get its act together. “If they feel we’re going to leave, they’ll cut deals with Moqtada Sadr” and other bad guys, says one Iraq expert who consults with the White House.

A DoD official says the Pentagon has heard a “question or two” about Gates’s comments from the White House, but that is all. A White House spokesperson did not immediately return a call asking for comment.

I HAVE A DREAM

I have a dream that in the New World, there will be a new Bill of Rights.
The first amendment will be, "Your daily wage is directly tied to how much
beauty and truth and love you provide."

I have a dream that in the New World, childbirth will be broadcast in prime
time on a major TV network every night.

I have a dream that the New World will have rapturists, and they'll vastly
outnumber the terrorists. The rapturists will be performance artists with a
conscience ... charismatic improvisers who love to spring fun surprises.
They'll commit unexpected interventions and unscheduled spectacles that
delight hordes of strangers.

I have a dream that in the New World, we will add an eleventh
commandment to the standard ten: Thou shalt not bore God.

I have a dream of a week-long annual holiday called the Bacchanalia. Work
and business will be suspended so that all adults can explore their ripe
mojo with frothy erotic experiments. Tenderly orgiastic marathons will
rage unabated. Reverential ecstasy and grateful generosity will rule.

I have a dream that when anchormen report tragedies on their nightly TV
shows, they'll break down and cry and let their emotions show. No more
poker faces.

*

I have a dream that in the New World, plutocracy will be a felony. April
Fool's Day will come once a month. There'll be scientific horoscopes and
mystical logic. Every one of us will have at least one imaginary friend.
Compassion will be an aphrodisiac.

In the New World, we'll launch an affirmative action program that
ultimately makes most of us celebrities. Buddhist real estate developers
will build a chain of sacred shopping centers in the heartland. The CEOs of
the Fortune 500 companies will be required by law to enjoy once-a-week
sessions with Jungian psychotherapists. Pioneers in artificial intelligence
research will develop computers that can talk to God.

In the New World, same-sex marriages will be fully sanctioned, of course.
But why stop there? We'll also legalize wedding bonds among
threesomes, foursomes, fivesomes, and large groups of people who are in
love with each other. I have a dream that we will expand the meaning of
love beyond anything our ancestors imagined.

*

I have a dream that in the New World, Oprah Winfrey will buy up all the
Pizza Huts on the planet and convert them into a global network of
menstrual huts, where for a few days each month, every one of us, men
and women alike, can resign from the crazy-making 9–5—drop out and
slow down, break trance and dive down into eternal time . . .
