abstinence and babies

The Majority Report Circle of life is now complete. !3 hours after the end of our last M-F show on AAR, Jessica, our segment producer gave birth to Annabelle Jordan Woods!

Oh and based on the results of this study, Jessica could have conceived as a result of taking an abstinence pledge.

Should Dems boycott FOX?
by John Aravosis (DC) · 4/13/2007 08:16:00 PM ET

I mean totally, no interviews, period? That's the issue that's arisen since Barack Obama apparently gave an exclusive interview to FOX News the other day. This, coming on the heels of Obama and other Democratic presidential candidates pulling out of two FOX-sponsored presidential debates (remember, FOX is the network that says that Obama's black Christian church is a cult). Which raises the question of whether Democrats should simply refuse to go on FOX ever again? Now, I don't recall there being a total blackout on FOX, but maybe there should be. On the pro side, FOX is an extension of the Republican party, and we shouldn't be enabling the GOP. On the con side, FOX does have a large audience, which includes some moderate winnable Republicans, and reaching them isn't a bad thing.

So what do you think, really? Should Dems stop going on FOX, period? (I have to admit that I stopped going on FOX a while ago because the network just creeped me out too much.)

An Interview with Kurt Vonnegut-Library Journal April 15, 1973

Vonnegut expressed no surprise, however, at the censorship problems some of his books have run into with public schools in parts of Michigan and Ohio. “It’s the same thing every time. They ban something of mine, the ACLU jumps in, loses the case in the lower court, and wins the appeal. After all,” he stresses optimistically, “they can’t win. What they’re doing is unconstitutional.”

......

You guys will not believe this, but right now I'm IMing with Josh Wolf!!!!

I think the Dems are doing the right thing by boycotting Fox..... Sure they could go on Fox and pummel the righties with facts and things... But Kerry did that to Bush in the debates. Alot of good it did him. I don't think your Fox audience is too worried about "truth, but rather truthiness. By going on Fox I think the Dems would just be acknowledging that Fox actually has credibility.

One evening in October when I was far from sober,
To keep my feet from wandering I tried.
My poor legs were all aflutter so I lay down in the gutter,
And a pig came up and lay down by my side.
We sang, “Never mind the weather just as long as we’re together,”
Till a lady passing by was heard to say,
“All his self-respect he loses when such company he chooses,”
And the pig got up and slowly walked away.

Joshua Wolf (born June 8, 1982) is an American video blogger, freelance journalist and filmmaker[1] who was jailed by a Federal district court on August 1, 2006 for refusing to turn over a collection of videotapes he recorded during a July 2005 demonstration in San Francisco, California. Wolf served 226 days in prison at the Federal Correctional Institution, Dublin, California, longer than any journalist in U.S. history has served for protecting source materials[2]. With permission from the prosecution, U.S. District Judge William Alsup ordered Wolf's release on April 3, 2007[3].

thank you sam seder
You may get the impression that I'm a fan of the AM radio. You would be correct. As I no longer live in a town in which one spends time in one's automobile, I have a clunky little earphone rig which I wear when I'm between subways and buildings. The rig is often accused of being something really cool. "No, it's just a radio." "Oh."

Consequently, I've followed the career of Sam Seder pretty closely, first on Air America's Majority Report, and then later on his own show, in the 9a - 12p slot. While I suspected that Sam was better suited for his original timeslot (his smart, strident humor goes down easier after work than it does before), I am saddened that the new management has decided to kick him down to Sundays only.

He started with no radio experience, and he grew into a fine, fine host. I hope the future holds more radio for him.

In the meantime, I'd like to share one of Sam's finest moments -- a television appearance in which he declares War On Christmas.

Cheers.

Statements and Thoughts On Sam Seder

by Chris Bowers

As you probably know by now, Sam Seder has been dropped from his daily time slot on Air America. After received what must have been a wave of flame mail over this decision, the new President of Air America released the following statement

[insert bs from Mark Green, President, Air America]

I am honestly a saddened by this decision, and wish that Sam was still in his old daily time slot. However, a new Sunday show is better than nothing. Back in my early days of blogging, whenever I would be on the radio with either Al Franken or Jeanine Garofalo, my Gen X friends would brim over with glee and excitement. However, perhaps because I am a nervous stiff, and those two have backgrounds as stand up comedians, I never knew how to handle interviews with them. For example, the first time I was on his show, Al Franken asked me if I had a gimp under my bed, ala Pulp Fiction. After spending three hours preparing myself with a zillion different facts for the interview, I was taken aback, and the resulting silence was pretty awkward (I was not invited back). By contrast, Sam Seder always made me feel very comfortable on the air, including by often bailing me out of moments of live, on-air discomfort in my exchanges with Jeanine Garofalo (which probably stemmed, at least in part, from being one of the many kids my demographic who grew up with a crush on her). Ultimately, the many times I was on his show from October 2004 through January 2006 gave me enough confidence to accept pretty much any interview, although I still turn down both Fox and live television. I know that a lot of other bloggers feel the same way, because Sam is a real friend to our movement. He is also a tremendous radio talent who earned his role, and who was discovered to have a real gift, rather than recruited for his celebrity status.

Thanks for everything Sam. Maybe it is good that his new show will focus on the netroots. Onwards and upwards!

Air America Radio Goes Less Liberal, Less Progressive, Just Plain Lessened.

I listen and like allot of Air America Radio. Atrios over on Eschaton and David Sirota on Sirotablog have mentioned it, and I'm sure there are others questioning AAR's logic of bumping Sam Seder from his daily stint and relegating Sam to the new "Seder on Sundays", or some-such title.

Sam's listeners and fans, including me, have sent E-Mails of support through the Sam Seder Show web site.

Admittedly, I had no knowledge of the dude "Lionel" before now. But, I am suspicious of folks with single-name monikers. Ya know like "Dubya", "Scooter", and the "Hammer".

I Google'd "Lionel". I visited his web site. I followed the link to watch recent TV appearances. The dude did an interview about a Reality TV Show. 1) I hate Reality TV Shows and 2) Where's the meat?

Separately, I've heard a sample of his style. I think Sam played a bite on his show. I don't like it. He sounds loud and noisy; not at all appealing to the ears. It's a long shot I'll stay tuned in beyond a sampling. So "Lionel", the "30-second elevator pitch" is basically all ya can expect from this loyal Sam Seder listener.

Seem unreasonable? Not really. Remember, I've been to Lionel's web site. It's pretty obvious that Lionel is the "Dennis Miller" of the Left; just less political, and less well known outside of NYC. And, we all know what a raving success Dennis Miller "has-been". What is Dennis up to theses days, anyway? Lionel wears a pinkie ring and a bracelet ... WTF is that? The opening page of Lionel's web site is like a friggin' billboard ad; All-Lionel-All-The-Time and 110% New York City, even though it seems he's originally from Florida. I don't have anything against the Big Apple. I've been. I like. But, there's a whole lot more USA than just NYC, and from his web site, it's hard to see Lionel's recognition of that fact.

Lionel's a lawyer. Lionel wears some goofy lookin' specs. Did I mention he wears a pinkie ring, and a bracelet? Does he wear a necklace too? Any other man-jewelry? The only thing missing is the plaid slacks and white belt and shoes of a used car salesman. I'm gonna have a tough time even TRYING to give this clown's show a chance ... much less 3 hours of it. Thank goodness for 3 hours of Thom Hartmann before, and another network's [not AAR] 3-hours of Big Ed Schultz afterward. I mean just contrast "Lionel" to Big Eddie. Ed Schultz is an ex-college football and NFL-tryout for the Oakland Raiders who is an outdoor sportsman, likes BBQ, drives an SUV, owns guns, and broadcasts from Fargo North Dakota! I mean, do guys outside of NYC actually wear pinkie rings and bracelets? And Eddie's not a lawyer either. Eddie is a reformed righty. "Lionel" looks and sounds to me like he could go over the fence, to the dark-side, any second now. ;-) By the way, "Talker Magazine" ranks Big Eddie as #5 overall, and #1 Progressive talk-show host. Randi Rhodes #13 overall [just one spot behind superstar Howard Stern], #2 Progressive, and "Lionel" a lowly #23 overall. What a stud, huh!

The question is, can a business like AAR, just coming outta bankruptcy protection, really afford this gamble of platooning Seder to try yet another "NEW-YORK-CITY" persona [in the same tone as the Pace Picante Sauce commercial, "Get a rope"] on the "America" in "Air America Radio"? I wouldn't bet on it. While I'm grateful that AAR has been rescued for the time being, perhaps someone in NYC should put a bug in New York real estate investor Stephen L. Green's ear. Tell him to look south to the Washington Redskins and see just how often their marketing genius owner, Daniel Snyder, has paid for high-priced talent and shuffled his line-up of both coaches and players. So far, that strategy hasn't yielded Daniel Snyder the much coveted Lomdardi trophy. It wouldn't hurt my feelings any to see the Jones Radio Network pick-up some of those that AAR is basically putting on waivers.

For now, I'm reusing the extra sidebar space freed up by removing the AAR link on BloggerRadio coz Liberals R-E-A-D, and the dark-side listen to the likes of Lush Bimbaugh, Sean Insanity, and Man-Coulter. Notice that Bush doesn't read [or speak] so hot.

White House Wants More Surveillance

WASHINGTON, April 14 (UPI) -- The Bush administration wants to broaden surveillance of foreign communications being routed through the United States.

The request before Congress also would make more noncitizens subject to intelligence surveillance, The Washington Post reported Saturday.

Under the 1978 Surveillance Act, individuals must be linked with a foreign terrorism suspect or a foreign power before their communications can be monitored. The Bush administration would broaden that to include noncitizens believed to 'possess, transmit or receive important foreign intelligence information,' administration officials said.

The new plan, which requires congressional approval, also would include those engaged in the United States in activities related to the purchase or development of weapons of mass destruction.

The expansion is needed to respond to 'dramatic' changes in communications technology used by intelligence targets in the United States, said Mike McConnell, director of national intelligence.

PAUL WOLFOWITZ: SWINGIN'-DICK WORLD BANK PRESIDENT WHO GAVE US IRAQ QUAGMIRE

"A guy doesn't pay to be with a prostitute--he pays them to go-away."--a wise adage, author unknown (probably Zoroaster).

NEW YORK CITY--Even The Economist (that magazine of Sadeian truth) is saying it's curtains for pimpster Paul Wolfowitz...who? You know, the guy who was the architect of the war in Iraq? That guy. He was one of the prime-instigators and facilitators of that ongoing-catastrophe. It finally appears that his protection is gone, and that he's going to--gasp--be held-accountable for hiring his girlfriend (lover, the woman who...you know) for a position (not missionary) at the World Bank. Ah yes, and she was given a staggering pay-raise since he couldn't put her directly-within the World Bank's facilities, but at a subsidiary insititution. Hey, you help start a war that enriches the once-flagging Halliburton, as well as oil corporations and war-profiteers everywhere, and you get some ass in the deal (yo'!). Also according to The Economist, it seems that his immediate-staff have been angry about this for a very long-time:

The affair also seems to have extinguished what little support Mr Wolfowitz had with his own staff. They have always resented the baggage—and a couple of the people—he carried with him to the bank from his controversial past. You do not need to be popular with your staff to be a good boss [Ed.-actually, you do.], but you surely need their confidence. Mr Wolfowitz it now seems will never gain that, even if he does get another chance. (Economist, 04.13.2007)

Creator of Dilbert gives Greens props
In the Dilbert Blog, Scott Adams makes mention of the Green Party. Specifically he writes "I’m not making an anti-Bush or even an anti-Cheney statement here. It’s simply an observation that no one on the planet – Democrat or Republican or Green Party – thinks policies would improve if Cheney had the top spot."

Nice to know that we have penetrated the consciousness enough to be noticed by Scott Adams. Think he would have any more idea who we were than say, the Peace and Freedom Party or Libertarian Party, if Ralph Nader had not carried our banner in 2000? I have no doubt.

George Bush's White Man's Burden

...
Now it appears that there's more to the Bush/ Roberts connection. Actually, Bush entertained Roberts for three hours and was so enthused that Roberts' wife "told the London Observer, "I thought I had a crush on him, but it's nothing like the crush President Bush has on him.'" Talk about male-bonding homoeroticism! More significant is the fact that Roberts appears to be a racist and an apologist for mass murder. According to Johann Hari in The New Republic (via Matthew Yglesias), Roberts has spoken at a dinner for the Springbok Club, "a group that regards itself as a shadow white government of South Africa and calls for "the re-establishment of civilized European rule throughout the African continent.'" Likewise, Roberts has written justifications of the Amritsar massacre in which British troops opened fire on 10,000 Indians engaged in a peaceful protest.

Just got finished listening to Sam's last show down here, where it's Sunday evening. We download the podcasts, and saved it for a while out of sorrow. Not being able to sign in to this blog with my old Blogger ID motivated me to update to the new system. This is a test to see if it works.

BTW, Aussies are not as drunk as Sam made them out to be on his anecdote about selling hot dogs in Oz. Although I guess it was the German who was most sozzled. Beer is WAY more expensive here than in the U.S. Wine, on the other hand, is cheap, due to the glut on the market. When I want to relax after work, I crack into this relatively decent Cab Sauv from McLaren Vale in the state of South Australia which costs $30 a case. That's $2.50 for a 750 ml bottle! With the exchange rate, that's less than $2 U.S. a bottle, and the stuff is better than 2-Buck Chuck.

This is getting long for a test post.

Here's the Sunday Talking Head line-up. It's a mixed bag this morning.

C-Span's Washington Journal - 7:45am - Jim Geraghty, The Hillary Spot, Blogger & Matthew Yglesias, Mathewyglesias.com, Blogger; 8:30am - Newspaper Articles & Viewer Calls; 9am - Adrian Fenty, Mayor of Washington, DC (D); 9:30am - Michael Scheuer, Former Head of CIA’s Bin Laden Unit (1996-99)

ABC's "This Week" - New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson; Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa.; comedian Rich Little.

CBS' "Face the Nation" - Vice President Dick Cheney.

NBC's "Meet the Press" - Retired Gen. Anthony Zinni.

CNN's "Late Edition" - Walter Mondale, former vice president; Sens. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., and Jim Webb, D-Va.; Marc Morial, president and CEO of National Urban League; Amy Holmes, one-time speechwriter for former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist; Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund; Richard Perle, fellow at the American Enterprise Institute; Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh.

"Fox News Sunday" - Sens. Carl Levin, D-Mich., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.; the Rev. Al Sharpton; Thomas Blanton, director of the National Security Archive.

Let's see. Dick Cheney is likely to say that if you don't agree with him, "then you are a terrorist supporting commie." Is that about right? Jon Kyl? "The Bush Administration would never, ever try to skirt the law and…darn it, where did I put that cue card that Karl prepared for me?" Ditto for Lindsey Graham. Richard Perle? "Iran….scary." Does that about cover the neocon and apologia contingent?

What looks interesting? Marian Wright Edelman of the Children's Defense Fund, who will likely be talking about their Elect Susie campaign regarding the 9 million (and counting) uninsured children in America. It's a wonderful campaign, well worth some effort and discussion, and I'm very glad that Marian is getting some air time for it this morning on CNN. I'm hoping to have more on this for us here at FDL as well in the days to come. Investing in our nation's children is not only the right thing to do — but it pays off in so many ways in the years to come if kids start out with a healthy foundation. Great work!

Low savings rate in U.S. seen as danger Fri Apr 13, 5:54 PM ET

The European Union's monetary chief said Friday that the United States' low savings rate and large budget deficit pose a risk to the global economy.

In comments after making a speech in Washington, EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia, from Spain, said that while the economy of the euro currency zone has been strengthened by reform, global economic imbalances could undermine it.

"We are living in a global economy with big imbalances not created by the euro area," he said.

Thirteen of the 27 EU member countries currently use the euro currency.

During his speech at the German Marshall Fund, Almunia said the world's largest economic powers should take advantage of current prosperity to reform their economic policies. He said that while Europe was changing its policies, others were not.

"All countries have a joint interest as well as a joint responsibility to use the favorable global economic conditions to contribute to an orderly resolution of imbalances," he said. "Europe is playing its part by implementing structural reforms. Others must step up to the plate."

While he did not specifically name the United States at that point in his speech, he later said that without change, the U.S. budget deficit would worsen and pose a risk for the global economy.

The Treasury Department said this month that the deficit from October through March totaled $258.4 billion, down 14.7 percent from the corresponding period a year ago.

But Almunia said that cyclical factors, including economic growth, accounted for the recent improvement and predicted that the deficit would grow again without policy changes. With a growing deficit, the U.S. savings rate is unsustainable, he said.

The savings rate in the United States has been negative for almost two years.

"Nobody, not even the biggest economy in the world, can live forever with this savings rate unless all the other economies in the world are ready to finance the deficit," he said.

World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz, gravely damaged by a pay scandal, was clinging to his job heading into an annual meeting of the 185-member development lender Sunday.

Support for the former US deputy defense secretary appeared confined to his old patrons in the US administration and to parts of Africa, with disquiet in Europe deepening over the latest controversy of his stormy two-year tenure.

Larry Bensky has been on KPFA and Pacifica forever. He has anchored coverage of many of the biggest moments of our lives. He will be doing the Gonzalez hearings this week. He is the epitome of what radio can be and is a model for what AAR should have been (though he doesn’t bring the funny very much). His exit and statements do not bode well for the condition of Pacifica."

Hi Toni, Sunny, Anon-ey

I think Green is probably sweating bullets. We'll never know what exactly is in his heart and where his motives lie, but he can't feel confident about this decision after the tsunami of disapproval that hit the station this past week. Moreover, I would hate to be in Lionel's shoes come May. After lsitening to his podcasts and TV spots, I can't say he seems like the type that would understand the situation. He's a smug, self-involved jerkoff in my estimation, a la "Big Ed" and I am sure if he is met with boycotts and blanket disapproval, he will have nothing but contempt for the listenership and brand us hypocrites on free speech.

Tonight on PBS "America at a Crossroads"
by JDalton
Sun Apr 15, 2007 at 10:53:35 AM PDT
I wrote about this series back in January, and wanted to remind everyone that it premieres tonight at 9:00PM. I watched a half-hour preview of the series on PBS yesterday and based on that and the reviews I have read, we should all tune in tonight and all week.

America at a Crossroads is a major public television event comprised of 11 independently produced documentaries regarding the challenges that we face in the post-9/11 world. The documentaries were selected from more than 400 proposals submitted from public television stations and independent documentary filmmakers around the world. Robert MacNeil will host the series that covers topics including the war on terrorism; the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan; the experience of American troops serving abroad; the struggle for balance within the Muslim world; and global perspectives on America’s role overseas.

I just wanted to re-post what the new program director (who not coincidentally came from WOR like Lionel) said:

On March 14, 2007, the new owners of Air America announced[18] the hiring of long time radio veteran David Bernstein to be the new Vice President of Programming. Prior to joining Air America, he was best known as the program director at New York radio station WOR from 1995-2002.[19]. In an interview with the New York Daily News [20], Mr. Bernstein explained his vision of Air America's future as "I don't see our purpose as 'answering' conservative radio or Rush [Limbaugh]. There's no clear majority in this country today. We want to talk to everyone and help everyone make the right choice."

U.S. generals call for action on climate change. Kos is not a progressive site. It is not a liberal site. It is a partisan site. The stated goal of the place is to elect Democratic candidates, as well as achieving a more people centered party, vs. a corpo-centric party.

It is progressive, liberal, etc, as long as those goals coincide with its mission.

As Air America gradually de-linked its interactive web sites for its cancelled and endangered shows, off-site links sprung up, such as Morning Seditionists, where Marc Maron's listeners still congregate daily, almost a year and a half after the show's cancellation, Seditionist Radio, where you can go back in time and stream teh Smart and teh Funny 24 hours a day. When the Majority Report blog stopped working, Sam Seder himself set up a blog as an offsite coffee bar where his listeners can congregate.

What Mark Green doesn't understand is that when radio personalities make themselves this accessible to their audience, that audience's loyalty is not to Air America; not to the business model or the suits that run it, but to the people at the microphones like Marc and Sam, and the behind-the-scenes people like Lauren and Joel and Justin and Dan "Canary in the Coal Mine" Pashman and Brendan McDonald. And you can't push those people off the air and put washed-up hacks like "Lionel" in there and expect us to just go along.
