Stock market in China drops 1.7% today
by Chris in Paris · 3/01/2007 03:44:00 AM ET

Plenty of debates swirling around on the topic of whether this is a correction or a real decline. Either way, it's going to bumpy for the near future. The Nikkei in Tokyo also down. Again, what happens with China is critical for the US (and beyond) because of how tightly our economies are all interconnected.

Tortillas illustrate U.S.-Mexico trade

...The transition already began in a café when I was accidentally served a crepa instead of a sandwich. The price for my meal was five pesos higher than I expected, and it took a moment before I realized why.

Crepas are made from tortillas instead of bread, and tortilla prices have been rising steadily since the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994. NAFTA reduces trade regulations between the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Despite the fact that Mexico can produce more than enough corn for the market demand within its borders, the U.S. has been dumping corn onto the Mexican market.

Fortunately, NAFTA did allow Mexico to limit the amount of tax-free corn it imports from the U.S., as well as place a moratorium on the importation of genetically modified seeds.

However, in the last year alone, tortilla prices jumped 14 percent. The Mexican government said the jump is because of price increases in U.S. corn and the demand of a growing biofuel industry. Critics call the situation an artificial crisis created by U.S. corn companies and Mexican right-wing officials who want to force further reduction of trade regulations.

If the critics are right, this plan seems to be working. The Mexican government recently approved a 200 million ton increase in tax-free corn imports from the U.S. It may then be forced to repeal the moratorium on genetically modified seeds. If that repeal occurs, it can have devastating effects on the genetic diversity and stability of Mexican-bred corn.

Whoops, for some reason I only posted that first sentence. Here's the rest. It's obviously a joke, but still a sick thought at the same time.

As with the clamor among the world's Catholics to have Pope John Paul II canonized as quickly as possible following his death, there is a rapidly rising wave inside the Washington Beltway to award the Congressional Medal of Honor to Vice President Dick Cheney for his heroic actions under fire in Afghanistan.

Sources at the Pentagon have confirmed that regulations are being re-written even now to allow for Cheney's medal to be awarded simply as a "Medal of Honor", as there is some feeling that retention of the congressional character of the award might slow down or sidetrack the process in this case.

"The VP's office has asked us to shotgun the recommendation... Uh, expedite it, I mean... so that the strong desire of the majority of Americans to see our nation's hero recognized is fulfilled as quickly as possible," said a Pentagon spokesperson.

Meanwhile, at least a portion of the proposed citation accompanying Cheney's MOH recommendation has been leaked to the media:

With deadly explosions coming so close they could be heard even in his underground bunker, Vice President Cheney, risking injury or death, sounded the general alarm by letting his comrades know that he had heard a loud boom, thus saving countless lives of those who merely assumed that the Vice President had either farted, or was on a hunting trip.

A young Army sergeant on the scene was interviewed:

"That Cheney, he's some kinda fightin' machine. I already figured he and them other boys back in Washington must be pretty tough for decidin' that you don't need body armor or up-armored Humvees, and now I can see just how they got to be so rugged. We call him Bunker Boomer 'round here."

And so, America eagerly awaits the formal recognition of its latest hero...

On a final note, administration sources also confirmed today that a new medal just above the Silver Star, the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, has been established and will be awarded retroactively to heroes of the global war on terrorism. Deeds warranting an award of the new medal include such acts as reading stories to elementary school children to maintain calm and order in the midst of a major terrorist attack...

Update: On a more serious note, don't miss the latest from The Washington Post today on the Walter Reed scandal: "Top officials at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, including the Army's surgeon general, have heard complaints about outpatient neglect from family members, veterans groups and members of Congress for more than three years."

Senate Committee to Request Testimony from Ousted Prosecutors
By Paul Kiel - February 28, 2007, 5:56 PM
The Senate Judiciary Committee has moved one step closer to having the ousted U.S. attorneys testify.

Following up on Sens. Dianne Feinstein's (D-CA) and Chuck Schumer's (D-NY) calls to subpoena the fired U.S. attorneys, a spokesperson for the Senate Judiciary Committee told me that the committee will be sending a letter in the next couple of days to some of the fired U.S. attorneys asking them to voluntarily testify.

If the attorneys do not agree, the committee will consider issuing subpoenas for their testimony next week, the spokesperson said. Sen. Schumer said earlier that a number of the attorneys are willing to testify, but would only do so if subpoenaed.

House Committee Schedules Vote on Issuing Subpoenas to Prosecutors
By Paul Kiel - February 28, 2007, 6:02 PM
Well, as the Senate Judiciary Committee moves towards issuing subpoenas for the ousted prosecutors, the House seems to be moving faster.

The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law will vote tomorrow on whether to issue subpoenas to four of the fired U.S. attorneys: California's Southern District's Carol Lam, Nevada's David Iglesias, Arkansas' Eastern District's H.E. "Bud" Cummins, and Washington's Western District's John McKay.

If the committee did issue subpoenas, the attorneys would testify next Thursday, according to the press release from Chairwoman Linda Sánchez (D-CA).

U.S. Knew of Threats as Cheney Visited Base

KABUL, Afghanistan, Feb. 28 — NATO and American forces knew that a suicide bomber was at large in the Bagram area before the suicide bomb attack on Tuesday that killed 23 people at the main gate of the United States air base where Vice President Dick Cheney was staying, a NATO spokesman said Wednesday. But despite the vice president’s presence, the Afghan police chief in the area said he had not been informed of the possible threat.

Anti-Kerry group slapped with largest-ever election law fine Michael Roston
Published: Thursday March 1, 2007

The day after Senator John Kerry confronted the financier of a group that smeared him in the 2004 election, the Federal Election Commission reached its largest ever settlement on a fine for another group that attacked the Vietnam Veteran in the last presidential race. Today's edition of Roll Call reported that the Progress for America Voter Fund was slapped with the large fine.

Roll Call's Matthew Murray writes that a settlement for a $750,000 fine was reached by the Progress for America Voter Fund and the Federal Election Commission yesterday. The conservative group raised $45 million from prominent Republican donors in the 2004 election cycle, and spent $30 million on advertising during the race.

At issue were advertisements from the Progress for America Voter Fund that questioned Senator Kerry's ability to lead the military. These ads put it outside the range of what was permissible by a '527', non-partisan organizations that may work to "influence the selection, nomination, election, or appointment of any individual to public office or office in a political organization.”

Al Gore didn't just sit on committees to create the Internet.

He wrote the legislation that funded development of the infrastructure and required that such developments would not become classified technology.

He kept putting it forward despite the fact that Reagan and Bush1 wouldn't have anything to do with it.

Finally, he held hearings on it and got a few more people interested in it, and then Bush1 agreed to sign it.

That legislation meant that the little arpanet backwater that had been available only to the DOD and academics was now accessible to the rest of us, and because of its commercial potential, it was broadly developed.

Even the techie architects of the Internet like Tim Berniers-Lee and Vint Cerf have said that what they did would not have been possible without Al Gore.

So yes, it was Al Gore's vision that "invented the Internet".

Good news, everyone...Bush will be "embaressed"

WASHINGTON (AP) - House Democratic leaders are developing an anti-war proposal that wouldn't cut off money for U.S. troops in Iraq while requiring President Bush to acknowledge problems with an overburdened military.

The plan could draw broad bipartisan support but was expected to be a tough sell to members who said they don't think it goes far enough to assuage voters angered by the four-year war.

Bush "hasn't to date done anything we've asked him to do, so why we would think he would do anything in the future is beyond me," said Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Calif., one of a group of liberal Democrats pushing for an immediate end to the war.

Democratic protests to the war grew louder in January after they took control of Congress and Bush announced that he planned to send 21,500 more troops to Iraq. Earlier this month, House Democrats pushed through a nonbinding resolution opposing the troop buildup.

Since then, Democrats have been trying to decide what to do next. Some worried that a plan by Rep. John Murtha to restrict funding for the war would go too far. Murtha, D-Pa., is extending his support to the revised proposal.

The tactic is more likely to embarrass Bush politically than force his hand on the war. He would have to sign repeated waivers for units and report to Congress those units with equipment shortfalls and other problems.

In the Senate, a group of senior Democrats want to repeal the 2002 measure authorizing the war and write a new resolution restricting the mission and ordering troop withdrawals to begin by this summer. But Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Iraq will have to wait until the Senate finishes work to improve homeland security.

"That would mean we would hold off the Iraq legislation for a matter of days, not weeks," he said.

The House Democrats' plan brought a sharp response from Brian Kennedy, spokesman for House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio.

"If this is the Democrats' last ditch effort to appease the ultraliberal wing of their party while appearing to support the troops at the same time, I don't think they are going to convince either one of any commitment whatsoever," Kennedy said. "This appears to be political posturing at its worst and yet another attempt to undermine the mission of our troops in harm's way. The American people are going to see right through it."

As Democrats met behind closed doors to discuss their options Tuesday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the Bush administration would talk to leaders from Iran and Syria on stabilizing Iraq.

US reporter urges more aggressive media

Bob Woodward, the US journalist who helped break the Watergate scandal, called Wednesday on reporters to take more time on stories after the US media's handling of the run-up to the Iraq war.

The celebrated Washington Post reporter said the media should have done more to verify whether Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein had secret weapons as alleged by US President George W. Bush as a reason to go to war.

"We should have been much more aggressive," Woodward told a conference in Tokyo.

"I've thought what I could have done," he said. "The only way to find out if (weapons of mass destruction) really existed is to get on the ground."

But he said the round-the-clock deadlines of the modern media were hampering investigative journalism.

"It's a crazy media environment. We need to slow it down. We need weeks, months or even years to work on stories," Woodward said.

Woodward and Carl Bernstein broke the story of the 1972 break-in at the Democratic Party office in the Watergate Hotel, ultimately leading to the resignation of US president Richard Nixon.

Woodward's latest book, "State of Denial," takes a critical look at Bush's invasion of Iraq.

"The real impulse is to make the government accountable so we do not get a secret government," Woodward said.

Blah,Blah,Blah...here's Greenspan's Clarification:

Ex-Fed chairman clarifies his remarks about U.S. recession

TOKYO (AP) — Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan told a Tokyo seminar Thursday that he does not think an economic slowdown in his country is "probable," toning down his earlier remarks about a possible recession later this year.
"It is possible we can get a U.S. recession toward the end of this year, but I don't think it's probable," Dow Jones Newswires quoted Greenspan as saying in his speech at a Tokyo forum organized by international brokerage CLSA.

On Monday, Greenspan said a recession was possible, though it's difficult to predict the timing, a comment blamed in part for the global market decline this week.

A plunge in Chinese share prices Tuesday and weaker-than-expected U.S. durable goods orders for January were also seen as contributing to the world markets slump.

Speaking via satellite to investors at CLSA's Japan Forum, Greenspan on Thursday appeared to want to hedge his bets on his prediction of the U.S. economy.

"Things look reasonably good in the short run for the U.S. and the world," he said. But "we can't just assume that this extraordinary period of recovery can extend indefinitely."

Greenspan also said Thursday that the U.S. has "gone through the major part of adjustment" in housing prices and "the worst is over," though the housing market is expected to remain weak, Dow Jones reported, citing information provided by CLSA.

He said the weak U.S. housing market has had only limited impact on consumer spending because consumers have been encouraged by the fall in gasoline prices.

The original Wired News article by Declan McCullagh, Mar. 11, 1999, which
started the claim:
"It's a time-honored tradition for presidential hopefuls to claim credit
for other people's successes. ... After Gore took credit for the Internet,
...
(note - first use found so far of "invent" wording is in a mailing-list
message headline composed by Declan McCullagh, publicizing a Republican
press release from the story:

==============================================================
Al Gore and the Internet
By Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf (inventors of TCP-IP,fathers of the internet)

Al Gore was the first political leader to recognize the importance of the
Internet and to promote and support its development.

No one person or even small group of persons exclusively "invented" the
Internet. It is the result of many years of ongoing collaboration among
people in government and the university community. But as the two people
who designed the basic architecture and the core protocols that make the
Internet work, we would like to acknowledge VP Gore's contributions as a
Congressman, Senator and as Vice President. No other elected official, to
our knowledge, has made a greater contribution over a longer period of
time.

Last year the Vice President made a straightforward statement on his role.
He said: "During my service in the United States Congress I took the
initiative in creating the Internet." We don't think, as some people have
argued, that Gore intended to claim he "invented" the Internet. Moreover,
there is no question in our minds that while serving as Senator, Gore's
initiatives had a significant and beneficial effect on the still-evolving
Internet. The fact of the matter is that Gore was talking about and
promoting the Internet long before most people were listening. We feel it
is timely to offer our perspective.

As far back as the 1970s Congressman Gore promoted the idea of high speed
telecommunications as an engine for both economic growth and the
improvement of our educational system. He was the first elected official
to grasp the potential of computer communications to have a broader impact
than just improving the conduct of science and scholarship. Though easily
forgotten now, at the time this was an unproven and controversial concept.
Our work on the Internet started in 1973 and was based on even earlier
work that took place in the mid-late 1960s. But the Internet, as we know
it today, was not deployed until 1983. When the Internet was still in the
early stages of its deployment, Congressman Gore provided intellectual
leadership by helping create the vision of the potential benefits of high
speed computing and communication. As an example, he sponsored hearings on
how advanced technologies might be put to use in areas like coordinating
the response of government agencies to natural disasters and other crises.

As a Senator in the 1980s Gore urged government agencies to consolidate
what at the time were several dozen different and unconnected networks
into an "Interagency Network." Working in a bi-partisan manner with
officials in Ronald Reagan and George Bush's administrations, Gore secured
the passage of the High Performance Computing and Communications Act in
1991. This "Gore Act" supported the National Research and Education
Network (NREN) initiative that became one of the major vehicles for the
spread of the Internet beyond the field of computer science.

As Vice President Gore promoted building the Internet both up and out, as
well as releasing the Internet from the control of the government agencies
that spawned it. He served as the major administration proponent for
continued investment in advanced computing and networking and private
sector initiatives such as Net Day. He was and is a strong proponent of
extending access to the network to schools and libraries. Today,
approximately 95% of our nation's schools are on the Internet. Gore
provided much-needed political support for the speedy privatization of the
Internet when the time arrived for it to become a commercially-driven
operation.

There are many factors that have contributed to the Internet's rapid
growth since the later 1980s, not the least of which has been political
support for its privatization and continued support for research in
advanced networking technology. No one in public life has been more
intellectually engaged in helping to create the climate for a thriving
Internet than the Vice President. Gore has been a clear champion of this
effort, both in the councils of government and with the public at large.

The Vice President deserves credit for his early recognition of the value
of high speed computing and communication and for his long-term and
consistent articulation of the potential value of the Internet to American
citizens and industry and, indeed, to the rest of the world.

Hello! I was a huge fan of the show from it's earlier incarnation, before it was changed to a new time-slot and renamed. I shaped my evening commute time around it. But now it's been dropped from San Francisco completely, and I cannot find any station who streams the show later in the day. I can't afford buying into Premium just to download the one show. Any thoughts or suggestions? I'm goin' nuts out here.... need my Sam fix. Kills me when I hear an ad for his show when I stream other shows online. Any thoughts would be tremendously appreciated... :-)

Hey Sam!

Tell the techno monkeys down in the basement to get the lead out of their ass and get some more bandwidth on the live stream. This is the third day in a row that I can't listen to the show.

If Silvio Berlusconi gave Bush the Niger documents in October 2001, Bush had to be ecstatic. They still had to be vetted though. The CIA trashed them and Cheney asked the guy at the beginning of the whole thing to convene a meeting with the intent to legitimize them. That guy was Michael Ledeen--Iran Contra bagman, fluent speaker of Italian, close associate of fascist elements in SISMI and the Italian defense ministry.

Ledeen, who I knew well at Washington University in the 70's wrote creepy biographies of Italian fascist of the 1920's. Ledeen is close to the Likudniks, Harold Rhode, Doug Feith and the convicted spies within the Department of Defense.

Wilson was sent to Niger by the CIA to validate that the documents were bogus--not investigate their veracity. These documents were created well before 9/11. Why.

This is where it gets really ugly for politicians who inductively follow the etiology of the forgeries. It involves the right wing in Israel and their belief that the best way to get to Iran (the enemy) was through Baghdad. Ledeen, Rhodes, et. al are close to the Likud right wing.

Congress should haul in Ledeen first, then the others including Berlusconi, Pollari, Martine as well as convicted felons: Weisman and Rosen.

This cabal goes way back into the 1990's and it involves treason.
