Chomsky on Why Bush Does Diplomacy Mafia-Style

Noam Chomsky explains what he thinks the U.S. will do to Iran, what is really at stake for America in Iraq, and why Palestinians are more likely to uphold their peace agreements than Israelis.

Michael Shank recently interviewed Noam Chomsky, noted linguist and foreign policy expert, on the latest developments in U.S. policy toward Iran, Iraq, North Korea, and Venezuela. Along the way, Chomsky also commented on climate change, the World Social Forum, and why international relations are run like the mafia.

Michael Shank: With similar nuclear developments in North Korea and Iran, why has the United States pursued direct diplomacy with North Korea but refuses to do so with Iran?

Noam Chomsky: To say that the United States has pursued diplomacy with North Korea is a little bit misleading. It did under the Clinton administration, though neither side completely lived up to their obligations. Clinton didn't do what was promised, nor did North Korea, but they were making progress. So when Bush came into the presidency, North Korea had enough uranium or plutonium for maybe one or two bombs, but then very limited missile capacity. During the Bush years it's exploded. The reason is, he immediately canceled the diplomacy and he's pretty much blocked it ever since.

(Updated) The White House website is getting scrubbed
by smintheus
Sun Feb 25, 2007 at 12:39:00 PM PST
On March 16, 2003 Dick Cheney went on Meet the Press. His absurd claims in that interview have since become politically embarrassing to the White House. For example, he declared...

I think things have gotten so bad inside Iraq, from the standpoint of the Iraqi people, my belief is we will, in fact, be greeted as liberators.

You won't any longer find a link to this transcript on the White House website—nor, indeed, are there links to most of Cheney's interviews from before 2006. Don't believe me? Just do a search for that infamous sentence at www.whitehouse.gov.

The WH website evidently has been busy scrubbing links to interviews and perhaps other public appearances by top officials. The operation has proceeded somewhat unevenly, though aggressively. Pretty clearly the WH wants to make it much harder to research the administration's past pronouncements, especially unscripted ones, and especially those pertaining to Iraq.

Here's the problem with this 'latest' hijacking of money to do illegal things by Republican't Administrations. Where is the consequence? They are all complicit. They get into power and then they pardon all the people who do illegal things for them. Like you said, the same people are doing it again. Becuase they didn't get punished for their illegal activities. And if they dems didn't hold them accountable then they are giving their silent OK to the process.

From firedoglake:

The jury is back in the courthouse for deliberations today. I checked with folks on the staff, and delibrations are scheduled to begin on time today, despite some inclement weather in DC over the weekend. There is a note that will be addressed in the courtroom at 9:45 am ET this morning, and the parties have been asked to be there to deal with it. (This could be as simple as a jury question or another request for materials. Take deep breaths.) As soon as we hear anything, we will let you know — we will have folks on the scene today reporting in whenever we get news. And now, back to your reading and your regularly scheduled waiting for a verdict. (Yes, deliberations for more than 2 and a half days are very, very common. Please do not fret.) — CHS

http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/february2007/260207mediablacklists.htm

Do you really think we can stop this Administration from nuking Iran without exposing them on 9/11 and OKC? What kind of new "catylizing event" will it take to justify the nuking of Iran? Good luck because by that point, this Presidents 29% support will at least double and you will once again be drowned out by the neocons in the corporate media.

Unless maybe you start having a serious discussion about the criminal elements within this administration driving the military industrial complex.

Gov. auditor says fiscal outlook is 'spiraling out of control' Michael Roston
Published: Monday February 26, 2007

Congress's auditor warned in a monthly update released last Friday that the latest data on America's fiscal outlook shows "a federal debt burden that ultimately spirals out of control."

The January update was based on new data supplied to the Government Accountability Office by the Congressional Budget Office, and identified spiraling national health care costs as the main culprit for the country's budgetary woes. The report also challenged a key assumption about the nation's fiscal future made by President George W. Bush in his release of the 2008 budget.

Using a pair of different simulations of government outlays, the GAO bluntly states that "the Nation's long-term fiscal future is 'at risk.'" It considered different futures in which discretionary spending grows more quickly or slowly, and in which tax cuts are renewed or allowed to expire.

I'm at the courthouse, and as Christy said in her update, one of the jurors was exposed to media coverage of the trial. Nobody really expected anything early this morning, so everyone is scrambling into the media room to try and figure out what's going on. Both teams are in the courtroom, and Fitzgerald, Wells, Jeffress and the judge are back with the jurors. Lots of finger drumming, toe tapping and leg swinging on the part of those left waiting. I'm sure the message from the judge to come back to court this morning was like a tazer jolt to everyone's already jangled nerves this morning.

What does this all mean? Well I, like everyone else, look to Christy:

They will voir dire (question) the juror in question, as well as all of the members of the jury to see what that juror saw and what, if any, impact it had in deliberations. It could be as innocuous as seeing a headline.

I'm wondering if this is a product of the Toensing nullification argument special in the WaPo, to be perfectly honest.

Once they go through the discussion with the jurors on the record, there will be some determination made as to whether or not there is a substantial impact on the jury deliberations — or whether there is cause for a mistrial. If a mistrial is declared, they will have to retry the whole case.

What is more likely is that the judge will determine that what the juror saw did not have a substantial impact. Judge Walton will then admonish the jury not to have contact with media — period. He may decide to sequester the jury from here on out. He will likely issue a cautionary instruction on how this should or should not enter the jury room. But we'll have to see what the level of exposure was to know what will happen.

And now we wait.

US weapons and guidence were used in Afghanistan during the war with the Soviets and in Iraq during the war with Iran. In Vietnam, the chinese were obviously supporting the Vietcong and we ended up establishing diplomatic ties with them shortly after the war ended. Why is this any different then what Iran is being accused of doing? I don't think they or anyone else should have nukes. They are protecting thier interests in the region. Thier interests are obviously different from ours. The hypocricy of our government in regards to who can do and have weapons or territory is amazing. Can anyone say PNAC!?!

Walton: The law does now allow you to continue your deliberations with 11 jururs, so that's what I'm going to do. Let me just ask if all of you have kept yourself isolated from any information about this case — if that is so, raise your hand. Okay, everybody raised their hand saying they have not had any outside information, and I ask that you continue to do that. It is imperative — you must decide this case based only on what you heard in this courtroom. With that I ask that you go back and proceed with your deliberations. Thank you.

Post Office May Issue 'Forever' Stamp
Feb 26, 7:54 AM (ET)

By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID

WASHINGTON (AP) - The next hike in postage rates could be ameliorated by the introduction of a "forever" stamp that would cover first-class postage despite future increases.

The independent Postal Regulatory Commission scheduled a Monday morning briefing to announce its ruling on the Postal Service's requests to raise first-class rates 3 cents to 42 cents and to establish the permanent stamp.

If the commission agrees, the matter goes back to the board of governors of the Postal Service, which is expected to schedule any rate changes in May. The commission can also reject or modify the rate proposal and send that to the postal board for a response.

A key part of the plan is the so-called forever stamp, which would allow consumers to hedge against future rate increases.

The stamp, which would not show a denomination, would sell for the first-class rate at the time of purchase and would remain valid for mailing permanently, even if rates increase.

That means folks who stocked up on forever stamps could say goodbye to those annoying 2-cent or 3-cent stamps that have to be added to letters every time rates go up.

For the average consumer, the most visible change would be the proposed increase to 42 cents for mailing letters, although the broad-ranging rate proposal covers a multitude of types of mail.

Video: 60 Minutes finds 'dissension in the Ranks' David Edwards and Mike Sheehan
Published: Monday February 26, 2007

In a piece entitled 'Dissension in the Ranks,' Lara Logan reports for 60 Minutes on a "large group of soldiers and Marines who are fed up" with the Iraq war.

"Americans in the military have been asked to make extraordinary sacrifices in recent years, particularly in Iraq, where the casualties are mounting, tours of duty are being extended, and some of them have had enough," says 60 Minutes' Steve Kroft, introducing the piece.

"As a patriotic citizen who served two combat tours in Iraq, I just feel like this war, it's simply just not working out anymore, and soldiers are dying there everyday," Specialist Kevin Torres told CBS.

The video below contains select clips of the report. A transcript and full video are available at CBS News.

JERUSALEM (AP) -- Archaeologists and clergymen in the Holy Land derided claims in a new documentary produced by the Oscar-winning director James Cameron that contradict major Christian tenets.

"The Lost Tomb of Christ," which the Discovery Channel will run on March 4, argues that 10 ancient ossuaries -- small caskets used to store bones -- discovered in a suburb of Jerusalem in 1980 may have contained the bones of Jesus and his family, according to a press release issued by the Discovery Channel.

One of the caskets even bears the title, "Judah, son of Jesus," hinting that Jesus may have had a son. And the very fact that Jesus had an ossuary would contradict the Christian belief that he was resurrected and ascended to heaven.

Most Christians believe Jesus' body spent three days at the site of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem's Old City. The burial site identified in Cameron's documentary is in a southern Jerusalem neighborhood nowhere near the church.

In 1996, when the BBC aired a short documentary on the same subject, archaeologists challenged the claims. Amos Kloner, the first archaeologist to examine the site, said the idea fails to hold up by archaeological standards but makes for profitable television.

"They just want to get money for it," Kloner said.

U.S. military's ability to respond to additional crisis at greater risk
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has upgraded to "significant" the risk facing the U.S. military's capability to respond to another crisis in a timely manner, according to two U.S. military sources familiar with the matter, CNN has confirmed.

Gen. Peter Pace sent the classified assessment in the last several days to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. By rating the risk as "significant," Gates under law, was then compelled to send his own classified report to Congress on how the military would deal with such a risk. Officials said they did not know the last time, if ever, the risk previously was labeled "significant."

They emphasized that the U.S. military could still muster forces and equipment to deal with another contingency, but said the Gates report details the measures that would required. An additional deployment would cost more and require the use of troops who might not initially be well trained as front line combat forces, the officials said. For example, an additional crisis could require a massive mobilization of the National Guard, depending on the contingency.

The assessments by both Pace and Gates focus on a potential third crisis that might erupt while U.S. forces remain engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan. --From CNN Pentagon Correspondent Barbara Starr (Posted 8:37 a.m.)

Governors critical of Bush's health care plan
Congressional help sought on children's health care

WASHINGTON - Governors from both parties are opposing President Bush's budget for a health care program that insures millions of children of the working poor, warning that failure to meet its spending needs will inflate the already high number of uninsured.

The budget dispute dominated discussions among governors Sunday, who promised to bring the matter to Bush and his Cabinet officials at private meetings Monday.

At stake is coverage for 6 million people, overwhelmingly children, as well as the hopes of many governors in tackling the larger challenge of the uninsured. All governors rely on the State Children's Health Insurance Program, intended to aid uninsured working families.

US generals ‘will quit’ if Bush orders Iran attack

SOME of America’s most senior military commanders are prepared to resign if the White House orders a military strike against Iran, according to highly placed defence and intelligence sources.

Tension in the Gulf region has raised fears that an attack on Iran is becoming increasingly likely before President George Bush leaves office. The Sunday Times has learnt that up to five generals and admirals are willing to resign rather than approve what they consider would be a reckless attack.

“There are four or five generals and admirals we know of who would resign if Bush ordered an attack on Iran,” a source with close ties to British intelligence said. “There is simply no stomach for it in the Pentagon, and a lot of people question whether such an attack would be effective or even possible.”

Iraqi Cabinet Approves Draft Oil Law

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - The Iraqi Cabinet approved a long-awaited draft oil law on Monday, sending it to parliament for consideration, the prime minister said, calling the agreement "another founding stone in state-building."

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government had promised a new oil law by the end of 2006 but missed the deadline due to objections from the Kurds, and it faced pressure from the Bush administration to come through. Many of Iraq's vast oil reserves can be found in the Kurdish north and the Shiite south, and the Kurds wanted a greater role in awarding contracts and administering the revenues.

Al-Maliki said Monday's agreement was an important step toward encouraging investment in the country's battered oil industry.

"Thanks be to God, the Iraqi government has laid another founding stone in state-building - the law of oil and gas - which will be beneficial to Iraqis of all sects and ethnicities," he said.

He said the law will be referred to the 275-member parliament for approval.

"This law will guarantee for Iraqis, not just now but for future generations too, complete national control over this natural wealth," Oil Minister Hussain al-Shahristani said.

Cuba Opens Experimental Wind Farm

Cuba has opened an experimental wind farm, hoping alternative energy sources can one day ease occasional power shortages while reducing the island's dependence on oil, state news media reported Sunday.

The $3.4 million park, featuring six 180-foot windmills, was established on Isla de la Juventud, an island south of Havana, according to the Communist Party youth newspaper Juventud Rebelde.

Exactly when the park was inaugurated was unclear, but officials estimate that during its first year of operation it could produce 1,800 megawatts of electricity. That would save Cuba about $136,000 in oil costs on international market, the newspaper said.

The park was built using French technology, and its windmills are designed to be disassembled quickly in case of hurricanes or tropical storms.

Officials hope to finish work on another wind park with six windmills, located in the eastern province of Holguin, by the end of the year. ...

Indonesia shuts East Timor border
Timorese Prime Minister

Indonesia has closed its border with East Timor after rebels raided an East Timorese police post and seized a large number of automatic weapons.

This was done to prevent the rebels from escaping into Indonesian territory, officials in Jakarta said.

East Timor is preparing for elections in April after the previous government collapsed in May 2005.

The island nation won independence from Indonesia in 1999 following a UN-sponsored referendum.

FYI -

PIRG: ATM Debit Cards
1. INTRODUCTION
Look in your wallet. Pull out your ATM card. PIRG has been receiving complaints about fraudulent use of new ATM "debit" cards with Visa or Mastercard logos. The new cards can be used with or WITHOUT a secret code (PIN) in gas stations, grocery stores or restaurants, or even over the phone, just like a credit card.

When the cards are used without a PIN, it is called an "off-line" transaction. A thief who has a copy of a debit card restaurant receipt can drain your checking account, even if your card itself or PIN hasn't been stolen. Worse, under the law, your liability is higher for debit card fraud than for credit card fraud, although VISA and Mastercard have announced that their issuing banks are voluntarily reducing liability, due to pressure from PIRG and other consumer advocates. Worse, regardless of your ultimate liability, with ATM debit card fraud, the thief has your money, from your checking account, and you still have to fight to get it back from the bank.

VISA calls its ATM card a VISA CHECK CARD. Mastercard calls its card a MASTERMONEY CARD. Some banks issue one, some the other. Banks are pushing them hard, and replacing expired "plain old ATM cards" (which can be used in some restaurants and gas stations with a PIN or secret code) with these slick debit cards, without asking if you want one.

Here's why: More merchants have credit card readers than PIN-based readers and banks make more money when you use an off-line debit card than when you make a PIN-based on-line transaction (the bank gets a percantage fee, or merchant discount, from the merchant who accepts the off-line card, instead of a smaller flat fee for PIN-transactions).

For either debit card transaction, both banks and merchants make more money and face lower risks than when you write a check-- the bank saves money on check clearing costs, there is less float time, and the merchants doesn't need to worry about bounced check risks or bounced check fees.

The cards also offer consumers convenience, but at a price.

I'm sure you have all heard about the Hersh article in the New Yorker. The Bush administration is stemming growth of Shi'ite influence in the Middle East specifically the Iranian govt. and Hezbollah in Lebanon. By funding violent Suni groups the U.S has been pumping $$$ without congressinal authority and without congressional oversight. For covert operations in the middle East where it wants to stop Shi'ite spread and influence. Funds have ended up wit 3 Suni Jihadist groups who are connected with Al Qaeda but want to take on Hezbollah. The president's executive priviledge has been taken to the fullest extreme. I wonder what our congress will do with this information?

see the point that sanders misses is not what side are you on. It is UnAmerican to destroy a society with a plutocratic tax system. The federal reserve system has destroyed the middle class. When congress abdicated their constitutional right to create the nations money and intilled that power to a group of private banks. The middle class became serfs for the rich and powerful. Jefferson knew this would be the fate of the middle class. What Sanders apparently misses is the founders original ideals that the money supply should be controlled in an egalitarian manner, a socialist bank if you will that the capitalist system is based upon. Not a group of private bankers who at will inflate our savings and hard work away and bankrupt us.

Please pay attention to the news story about today's bomb blast on an Iraqi soccer field. The original story stated that the US detonated a controlled blast that injured a few. Now apparently 18 children were killed and the details of US involvement now appear "unknown". Only MSNBC has this account CNN and Reuters are going with the unknown angle after pulling the original story.
