AFN Selects Colmes to Replace Franken
Bad news continues afflict the lib talk format. First we hear, this week, that two more lib talk stations will likely be flipping formats --KCTC in Sacramento (on Monday) and KPFT in Fresno (in about two months). Now we learn that the Armed Forces Network will be replacing Al Franken’s spot of their line-up with "Fox’s liberal punching bag", Alan Colmes. Yes, the AFN overlooked the top ten syndicated liberal hosts on the radio, and selected someone who is generally despised by lib talk listeners.

By the way...I think that th "Half Hour News Hour" isn;t even a show yet. I think they just leaked the pilot out because they are afraid of the huge flop its going to be, so their logic must have been to gauge public reaction, first. there seems to be no reference to this show on the FOX site. It must be buried in there somewhere.

This film explores the origins in the 1940s and 50s of Islamic Fundamentalism in the Middle East, and Neoconservatism in America, parallels between these movements, and their effect on the world today. From the introduction to Part 1:

"Both [the Islamists and Neoconservatives] were idealists who were born out of the failure of the liberal dream to build a better world. And both had a very similar explanation for what caused that failure. These two groups have changed the world, but not in the way that either intended. Together, they created today’s nightmare vision of a secret, organized evil that threatens the world. A fantasy that politicians then found restored their power and authority in a disillusioned age. And those with the darkest fears became the most powerful. " The Power of Nightmares, Baby It's Cold Outside.

Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), That --

(1) Congress and the American people will continue to support and protect the members of the United States Armed Forces who are serving or who have served bravely and honorably in Iraq; and

An open letter to Big Ed
Someone sent me a link to your extended on air comments regarding Air America Radio today and the possibility occurred to me that perhaps your remarks were ultimately not about my asking for listener support for Thom Hartmann on AARXM 167. I’m concerned I have become a surrogate for some previously unexpressed ill will and general disagreement you've been harboring against Al, Randi, Mike Malloy, the very idea of Air America Radio, and some other segments of the progressive movement and media.

It has been suggested to me that it is not a coincidence that your comments yesterday come shortly after your move to 12-3 pm est and the day before Al leaves radio where he has been doing his show in that time slot for nearly three years. This explanation is a bit cynical for me, though I must admit I am at a bit of a loss as to your reaction yesterday.

I never imagined that advocating that Air America affiliates, including AARXM, carry Air America programming would hurt your feelings, nor was it my intention to offend you. I have always felt competition between Jones Media progressive programming and AAR was healthy and would promote more and more progressive talk. Surely, any plans that XM may or may not have to carry you on the AARXM channel did not come about without lobbying by your representatives. I do not fault you, your Executive Producers or Jones for this, of course, it is the nature of our business or any business. I am confident, that if you truly feel uncomfortable associating your brand and name with Air America Radio on XM your representatives could request that you not be carried on the AARXM channel.

While I know that we have some disagreements politically, (your intense support of pro escalation Joe Lieberman, my intense support of the netroots, etc.) ultimately, we share a lot more political values, not to mention a love of fly fishing and beer, than not. It pains me to see you do this disservice to yourself and progressive media in general.

I will continue to support my friend and co-worker Thom Hartmann, not because anyone has paid me to or even asked me to, but because it goes to the heart of who I am. But please know, I hope this is not taken as an offense by you. I continue to believe and hope you will have more success in the future,

all the best

Sam Seder

UPDATE This site has been slammed with huge traffic today- and we have been inoperable most of the day. As you can see, comments have yet to be restored and we have lost the section to the right. We are working on it.

Second Update I've been asked to highlight a link in the above post. This one. It is a post by ex-cia agent, Larry Johnson of No Quarter. In it he retells how he became persona non grata at the Ed Schultz Show because Ed resented Larry's praise of Keith Olbermann.

Anonymous said...

Sam, first I have to say that you and Randi are my favorite hosts on Air America, second, why do you feel that the general public dont realize the power they have. in that if we all decided that we wouldnt accept the dollar anymore as having a value we could not only overthrow the George bushes in our government but also we could overthrow all the corporate hacks who back him. all of their money would become meaningless ( and yes we would have to come up with another form of currency ) but only in a perfect world eh?

Report: Sale of Bankrupt Air America Radio Hits Potential Roadblock

Submitted by Mark Hefflinger on February 15, 2007 - 1:09pm.

New York - Air America Radio, the New York-based liberal talk radio network that in October filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, has seen its proposed $4.25 million sale to SLG Radio hit a roadblock, according to TheDeal.com.

The website reported that the Air America's unsecured creditors committee is objecting to the deal, claiming that the sale process is being conducted exclusively for the benefit of the company's debtor-in-possession lender, Democracy Allies.

The committee claims that Democracy Allies has backed out of a deal to use $500,000 from the sale's proceeds to pay unsecured creditors, while at the same time it would be paid back in full, with several of its insiders receiving minority stakes in the acquiring company.

The committee's arguments will be aired at a hearing on Friday.

Air America, which currently produces 19 hours of original programming a day and is heard on 81 affiliates, signed a letter of intent for the sale in late January.

help! I live in Virgil Goode's district and we have a real American hero, Al Weed, who can beat him if he runs against Goode for the 3rd straight time. Weed got 33% in 04, 40% in 06 (also w/ 1% for an indy green). He's ivy league, green beret (Vietnam and Bosnia), father of two (his daughter is a middle school teacher and his son is an army surgeon in Iraq), farmer (started the wine industry in Virginia), super intelligent and an awesome progressive. I have been to his vineyard (where I got married) recently and his worker said he's not likely to run. If we can get some $ going his way from Dems or netroots, then we have a real winner. I'm dedicated to ousting Virgil Goode. He's not representative of Thomas Jefferson's, UVA's, and Charlottesville's district. Any ideas? Spread the word.

(AP) An Italian judge on Friday indicted 26 Americans and five Italians in the first criminal trial over the CIA's extraordinary rendition program.

The judge set the trial date for June 8. Prosecutors allege that five Italian intelligence officials worked with the Americans — almost all CIA agents — to abduct terror suspect Osama Moustafa Hassan Nasr from a Milan street on Feb. 17, 2003.

Nasr was allegedly transferred by vehicle to the Aviano Air Force base near Venice and then by air to the Ramstein Air Base in Germany and on to Egypt, where critics say he was tortured.

All but one of the American suspects have been identified as CIA agents, including the former station chiefs in Rome and Milan. The other is a U.S. Air Force officer stationed at the time at Aviano.

Cheney Says Bush Will Veto Pro-Union Bill

President Bush will veto pending legislation aimed at boosting union strength, Vice President Cheney told National Association of Manufacturers members at a Wednesday breakfast meeting to kick off the group’s lobbying efforts.

The “Employee Free Choice Act,” currently making its way through the House, would change the process of union elections. Under the measure, if a majority of workers in a workplace sign cards authorizing a union, then the workers would get a union. Under current law, even when a majority of workers ask for union representation, their employers can force them to undergo an election process administered by the National Labor Relations Board. Supporters contend the proposal would strengthen unions against unfair management tactics. Opponents warn that the measure is an effort by unions to exert undue influence after years of waning support.

The Docile American
The Nexus of God, Labor, Health Care and the Fear to Strike
by Zbignew Zingh

A general strike is one of the most powerful tools of non-violent civil disobedience. In a general strike all work stops, businesses shut down, consumers do not spend money, teachers and students stay away from school, employees call in sick, lawyers do not try cases, assembly line workers do not assemble, teamsters park their rigs, pilots do not fly, doctors practice only emergency medicine, and commerce grinds to a halt. General strikes are not violent, but they cause tremendous economic hurt. When properly coordinated and prepared, they are very persuasive. General strikes have toppled governments, such as in Argentina, and they have prevented the implementation of anti-labor legislation, most notably in France and in Italy. Some argue that Americans are simply too economically comfortable to participate in any political action more strenuous that penciling an X on a ballot. That cannot be the answer. Indeed, the notion that Americans live better than everyone else is part of our national mythology. Although many Americans reside in spacious (and heavily mortgaged) houses and, by incurring massive debt, own lots of "stuff", citizens of several European industrialized nations live, on average, healthier, more secure lives and work far fewer hours than most Americans. Certain Asian countries are not far behind. Notwithstanding their better living conditions, Germans, French, Italians and Spaniards, for example, are still more willing to take concerted political action than are Americans. There are several reasons for Americans' complacency and Europeans' engagement.....(full article)

The Roumanians wish the old days were back because

1. Their health care and city services and educational resources for young and old almost entirely ceased with the downfall of the old system

To say they're miserable anyway, as your caller did, is outrageous. I visited some people there year's ago and have to say that U.S. citizens don't ever know what they're talking about unless they do some traveling or reading.

If socialism is so bad and stifles innovation then why do the nordic countries enjoy one of the highest standard of living? Why are their stock markets going up much faster than the US? I am sure that the morons on the right dont own a Nokia or Ericsson cell phone. BTW did you know that the 2 largest truck makers in the world are Swedish, Volvo and Scania. And that all American symbol of the road Mac-Truck is made by Volvo...

Not bad for a country with a population of about 9 million.

Just a thought...

PunditFight said...

Jason, i'd disagree.
A Sam, Keith O tag team wouldn't work. It would stifle Sam's comedy. Plus Sam can provide as much anger than Keith could.
Plus Keith may not have the same off the cuff abilities. A better tag team would be with Maron one of the bloggers.

from Liberal Talk Radio blog...

The decision by XM Radio to move Ed Schultz' show over to their dedicated Air America Radio channel (ch. 167) has irritated some listeners and pleased others. And yesterday, it heated up into a nasty on-air radio war, hung out for all to hear.

Last Friday, Air America host Sam Seder had Marc Maron on his show, as he does every Friday. Maron noted that Schultz has been added to the Air America channel (XM167), and that concerned listeners should contact XM if they would rather hear Thom Hartmann in the time slot. He also referred to Schultz as 'weak'. Seder even posted a rather mild suggestion on his blog:

...there's a rumor going around that Thom won't be carried by XM on the AAR channel. Instead they'll carry Ed Schultz. If I listened to AAR through XM- I'd be pissed.... let them know how you feel

Well, that certainly didn't go over well with Team Fargo. Schultz and Air America have had their differences in the past. Over three years ago, Schultz and Randi Rhodes were reportedly up for the same job, an attempt to create a nationally-syndicated liberal talk radio show. Schultz got the nod, and there's been a few infrequent jabs traded back and forth between the two ever since. For the most part, though, back and forth bashing has been pretty tame, though several hosts, including Rhodes and Seder, have thrown around a little smack at Big Eddie. On his show last summer, Mike Malloy referred to Schultz as a phony liberal, which resulted in Schultz blasting him on-air as a 'punk'. Schultz has occasionally ripped on Air America for their business practices. Yesterday, the shit really hit the fan.

Socialism is a political system whereas capitalism is an economic system. We are a republic/democracy with an economic system. You could argue that some of the European countries are socialist democracies and that is an effective system. Unbridled capitalism is the problem we are seeing here. Just because we consider controlling capitalism doesn't in any way undermine our democracy. It just means we are steering capitalism to serve the social order (socialism). In my opinion.

The answer is "Yes, I am a socialist"

That which is good and functional in The U.S.A. has been socialized.

Socialism won WWII. It was the effort of ALL and the practical allocation of resources that defeated globalism and facism.

That's exactly why it WILL happen. Universal Healthcare, that is.

All the industry leaders are behind it because it makes them more competitive and small businesses who can't even afford to hire people anymore, don't stand a chance in this economic environment. Talk about economic stimulus!

I went to Virgil Goode's official biography and see that he was a Phi Beta Kappa while an undergrad at the UVa. This brings up the thought that his "in Muhammad we trust" speech is a Kenny Delmar (Senator Claghorn) impersonation he puts on for audiences he thinks are too stupid to understand normal speech. Where did he deliver this rant?

The 'beat up on Maron' segment is thoroughly enjoyable. You should work in a little slapstick physical humor too.

I could watch that every week.

Blog for Marc maron at Al franken's blog under the last post...its an ongoing thread for the next couple of weeks. They are gonna keep that blog opened for a couple of weeks and it seemed yesterday like alot of people were over there ...That blog seems to work pretty good, but Im not sure if its ever had the strain that Sammy's gets...
I think that the reason that Sam's blog is so messed up may have to do with lack of funds, but also maybe the program is not great...There is no reason that it shouldnt run smoothly though...unless the server at AAR is just too small...

The Anti-Escalation Strategy

For the past three days, the House of Representatives has overwhelmingly spoken out against President Bush's plan to send 21,500 more U.S. troops to Iraq. Today, it will vote on a resolution that condemns Bush's escalation plan, while voicing support for U.S. troops in Iraq. "We want a very straightforward, clear answer to the question: 'Do you support the president's escalation?'" said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD). The resolution not only has strong bipartisan backing in Congress, but 63 percent of the public also disapprove of sending more troops to Iraq. The Senate will take up similar legislation today. Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) has announced plans to introduce a bill next month that would place restrictions on how Bush can spend the $93.4 billion in new combat funds he requested, paving the way toward redeployment and increasing the readiness of the overstretched military. Contact your senators and representatives and voice your opposition to sending more troops to Iraq.

Which is why they invest so heavily in the laugh track -- it's ALL THEY GOT. (And, no, I don't believe the track is from some live audience they drugged or forced to watch the show ... no one could stupid enough to laugh at those jokes. Keep your eyes on whether John McCain blows off the war vote on Saturday
by John in DC 2/16/2007 10:28:00 AM | digg it | fark it!

McCain reportedly has an "elect me president" event on Saturday that conflicts with that small matter of the Senate trying to debate the Iraq war. Any guesses on whether John McCain blows off the Senate war debate and vote on Saturday so that instead of trying to help our troops he can go kiss babies?

McCain already missed the first vote on the small matter of the Senate trying to debate the Iraq war back on February 5, 2007.

Bankruptcy judge approves sale of Air America Radio
Posted 2/16/2007 12:30 PM ET
NEW YORK (AP) — A federal bankruptcy judge approved on Friday the sale of the liberal talk radio network Air America Radio for $4.25 million to Stephen L. Green, founder of a New York real estate firm.
The approval of U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Drain essentially transfers all the assets of Piquant LLC, parent company of the New York-based Air America, to a group including new and current investors.

It gives a majority stake to Green Family Media LLC, an entity controlled by Green, and a minority stake to Democracy Allies LLC. That group includes RealNetworks Inc. Chief Executive Robert Glaser and two former Air America board members.

Air America was launched in 2004 and has lost money ever since. Its most prominent personality was the comedian and author Al Franken, who left the network on Wednesday to run for nomination to a U.S. Senate seat from Minnesota.

Green is the founder and chairman of SL Green Realty Corp., a publicly traded real estate investment trust that owns 34 Manhattan office buildings and has a total of 27 million square feet of space under its control. He is also the brother of Mark Green, a longtime New York politician who has appeared frequently as a guest on Air America.

Lawyers for Green asserted that he offered "the only chance for the debtor to avoid liquidation." Air America Chief Executive Scott Elberg said Friday that if the sale was not approved, the network would soon be closed down.

The Cold Splash of Reality, With A Side of Sizzle
What Was That About Virginia Going Purple?

Virgil Goode, the Muslim-loathing congressman from south-central Virginia, won reelection this fall by 59-40 percent over his Democratic challenger, Al Weed. It wasn't remotely close.

In tobacco country, the man who led the fight for a wildly generous federal tobacco buyout, seemed unscathed by the fact that he was also known as "Representative A," the man who was identified in court papers as the congressman who took $46,000 in illegal campaign contributions from a defense contractor that was trying to win his support for a big fat federal gift. The MZM company got its $3.6 million federal earmark thanks to Goode, and Virgil won reelection anyway.

So it shouldn't come as any surprise that Goode feels real good about his letter to a constituent warning against a Muslim takeover of the United States and ripping newly elected congressman Keith Ellison of Minnesota for daring to choose to be sworn in using a Koran instead of a Bible.

Here's the complete text of Goode's letter to a constituent:
