Senator Reid, why not call for an up-or-down vote on Bush's surge plan?

And no, this isn't what you're already doing. Let me explain.

The House is getting ready to vote today on a resolution critical of Bush's Iraq "surge." This is the same resolution that you, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), are going to try to bring up for debate in the Senate tomorrow, Saturday. If the Republicans continue to filibuster the Senate even debating Bush's surge plan, let alone filibustering a vote on the plan, which is what Senate GOP leaders are hoping happens, then let me humbly propose a Plan B.

In the spirit of bipartisanship and cooperation, forget the Warner resolution, forget the McCain resolution, forget the House resolution. Forget any other Democratic resolutions that are out there. If Republicans and Democrats in the Senate can't agree as to whose resolution should be debated and voted on, fine. There's only one resolution that matters anyway, George Bush's. (Yes, I know he doesn't have a resolution, read on.)

Announce that the Senate is at an impasse, trash the other resolutions (House, Democratic, Republican), and call up Bush's "surge" plan for an up-or-down vote. [...]

Then let's see the GOP claim that the debate and vote is unfair when the only thing being debated and voted on is the president's language detailing and praising the president's plan.

Hi Sam,
You're currently replacing Al Franken out here in Portland. I have 3 radios tuned to pull in the show. However, if you continue to scream and mimic, which isn't funny, I'm running through the house turning this station off. I'm sure the vendors don't want to hear this. It isn't necessary to scream to get my attention.
Thanks,
Helen

Hi Sam,

Love the show. Thank you so much for speaking truth to power with such wit, good humor, and class. What you do is truly important, and history will smile on you.

Although I love your work, you surprised me last night when you and Atrios expressed puzzlement about what the administration could be trying to achieve by fomenting public anger towards Iran. The answer seems obvious to me. This administration has always prioritized the interests of Big Oil above the good of our country. If the US goes to war with Iran, mines will start blowing up in the Persian Gulf, the Straits of Hormuz will become almost impassable to tankers, and the price of oil will go through the roof. The Big Oil boys are going to laugh all the way to the bank while John Q. Public pays $6 for a gallon of gas.

I'll take your comments of the air. Thanks much for your excellent work.

That guy who called on Thursday about Radio Induction heating was probably a kook. It's used in industry and manufactoring and is similar to microwave heating of food but it works at lower radio frequencies. If, in fact, a system like that were set up for a typical dwelling, metal and other ferrous items like forks, spoons, earings, hardware could possibly become red hot and cause injury to occupants or even burn the house down.

I listen to both Ed Shultz and Air America personalities. I have heard Ed go off against Air America before and it disturbs me. His ego supercedes the message of getting this country back to a balance and fighting the neo-con agenda. I thought we were getting Thom Hartman from 9-12 in Portland but we now have Sam Seder. I have listened to Sam and will continue to. One reason I did listen to Al was for the interviews. David Brock, Melanie Sloan, Christy Harvey, Tom Olaphant(spelling) Joe Conistan. I hope you can get regular interviews in w/ updates to important issues. I really think Ed should shut up and enjoy the listeners he receives from Air America. And yes- he did kiss up to Liberman who is disgraceful= a true republican in sheep clothes.

The clip at the top of the broken blog reminded me of:

Bush's Faustian Deal With the Taliban
By Robert Scheer
Published May 22, 2001 in LA Times

Enslave your girls and women, harbor anti-U.S. terrorists, destroy every vestige of civilization in your homeland, and the Bush administration will embrace you. All that matters is that you line up as an ally in the drug war, the only international cause that this nation still takes seriously.

That's the message sent with the recent gift of $43 million to the Taliban rulers of Afghanistan, the most virulent anti-American violators of human rights in the world today. The gift, announced last Thursday by Secretary of State Colin Powell, in addition to other recent aid, makes the U.S. the main sponsor of the Taliban and rewards that "rogue regime" for declaring that opium growing is against the will of God. So, too, by the Taliban's estimation, are most human activities, but it's the ban on drugs that catches this administration's attention.

Hey Sam,
I am sick of people calling in and dissing Clinton. First of all, how relevant is the argument, and if what they say is actually true(and I doubt it could be considering their sources) Who cares. If Clinton was a war profiteer, why was he not prosecuted by a government who was obviosly after him? and who did he hurt? how many soldiers died? how many BILLIONS of dollars were stolen? How many times did he say' gee I gotta pee, someone get me a copy of the constitution"? How many illegal wars did he start? How many countries thought we were morons or just simply imoral during the Clinton admin? I am sick of these idiots! Maybe we should waterboard them! I think we can now legally do it. See, there is an upside!

Keep up the hard work of telling the truth

Sam Seder's Clinton Complex

If today's performance by Sam Seder is any indication, the future of post-Al Franken Air America is bleak indeed.

During a discussion of Iraq war profiteering of Bush/Cheney-linked firms such as Halliburton and Bechtel, Seder launched a surreal diatribe against Bill Clinton. Entertaining a caller's assertion that President Clinton was a major Halliburton shareholder, Seder attacked Clinton's own "low grade wars" of the 1990's. The implication is that Clinton somehow filled and dined at the same war-time corporate trough now feeding the Republican defense establishment.

This is not to say that Bill Clinton should be immune to criticism, far from it. Don't Ask, Don't Tell, the Lewinsky bimbroglio and the botched heath care reform are just a few of the sore points, and NAFTA remains a source of heated debate in both parties.

But Clinton's foreign policy interventions brought democracy to Haiti, halted the bloodbath in Bosnia and stemmed the ethnic cleansing in Kosovo. Unlike Iraq, those moves, all criticized by the right, will not be remembered for out-of-control war profiteering. Instead, they represent successes in a post-Cold War landscape where America's multilateral stewardship headed off growing violence, political chaos and humanitarian disaster.

As Al Franken moves on to his Minnesota Senate race against Republican Norm Coleman, the tenor of Air America seems set to move further to the left. But while Franken enjoyed the support of activists and Democratic political leadership alike, other Air America voices will struggle to fill the void. Portland's Thom Hartmann, set to fill Franken's slot, is a thoughtful analyst and author on the left, but through no fault of his own lacks Franken's star power.

As for Sam Seder, let's just say he was great in Next Stop Wonderland.

NY Observer on the sale of Air America:
Green Brothers Win!
Steve, Mark to Buy Leaky Air America

Ever since rumors began to swirl that Air America Radio might declare bankruptcy—a rumor that became real on Oct. 13, 2006—the network’s Sixth Avenue headquarters have had the slow, deflated feel of a boomtown going bust.

The cluster of cubicles that were once occupied by a buzzy cadre of researchers sits partly empty—except for the bits that have been leased to a crew belonging to a new, unrelated radio venture by Jane Fonda and Gloria Steinem. And the humor around what had once been an almost perversely upbeat operation is now more often of the gallows variety. In a recent interview, Sam Seder—one of Air America’s remaining stalwarts and the host of his own eponymous radio show—jokingly pointed to his newly functioning radiator as evidence that the place was still alive. “See?” he said. “Things are happening around here!”

But over the last couple of weeks, loyalists like Mr. Seder have become, at least, less pessimistic. The change in attitude stems from the announcement on Jan. 29 that a rescue team consisting of the publicity-shy real-estate mogul Stephen Green and his garrulous brother—former New York City Public Advocate, Nader’s Raider and all-purpose liberal gadfly Mark Green—had signed a letter of intent to purchase the struggling network.

I finally listened to Ed Schultz's rant.

A few things:

I actually agreed with him about many issues, which shocked me. For instance, I myself have criticized Al Franken because he wanted to leave AAR almost when he joined it. I admire Franken because he took the initiative to form it, but I know that his USO nonsense and moderate stances are attributable to his upcoming political career. Sometimes I myself wonder if AAR was simply a springboard for his political career.

Obviously I also agree with Schultz about Mike Malloy. "Hate merchant" is rather mild contrasted to my description of him. He is a bigoted redneck wannabe.

I also remembered why I discontinued listening to Schultz: he loves Lieberman. Although he loves Lieberman, I think that unlike Malloy, he is a genuine guy-- just a fairly naive redneck... which is fine.

So I actually started to like the guy afterward. It was odd. Anyway...

Cat Chew said...

Franken's been doing USO tours since 1999. Kosovo, Bosnia...
I wouldn't call 7 tours since 1999 nonsense, and I think that predates any thought of his running for office.

EYE ON THE MEDIA~~ KISSING UP TO THE LOBBY
DesertPeace

February 16, 2007

I was hoping that when Barack Obama threw his hat in the ring for the Democratic nomination he would give Hillary a 'run for the money'. Instead, he is 'kissing up' to the Lobby with statements about Israel.
Instead of proposing recognition of the new Palestinian Unity Government, he is already hinting that they are the enemy of Israel. Instead of offering a new platform for peace he seems to be willing to keep things just as they are.... seeking out enemies and finding ways to protect Israel from them.
All he has to do is look carefully at the present US Administration, the enemy is right there. They are the ones that have prevented a real peace process from ever developing in the Middle East, they are the ones that have supplied Israel with arms to be used against the civilian population of Palestine.
Yes, Israel must be protected against its enemies, starting with the United States.
The following report is from this morning's HaAretz.....

Obama: U.S. must help Israel defend itself By Shmuel Rosner, Haaretz Correspondent

WASHINGTON - U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, a Democrat from Illinois who is competing for his party's presidential nomination, told Haaretz on Thursday that the United States should help protect Israel from its "dangerous" enemies.

"My view is that the United States' special relationship with Israel obligates us to be helpful to them in the search for credible partners with whom they can make peace, while also supporting Israel in defending itself against enemies sworn to its destruction," he said.

The AAR logo is at the head of the page.
The blurb says "XM Satellite Radio welcomes back Ed Schultz to Air America XM 167 beginning Monday February 19th."

The newly refinanced Air America ought to protect its brand. Having Ed use the infrastructure that AAR built to trash AAR is egregious.

My daddy used to say about people like Ed Schultz, "If you could buy him for what he's worth and sell him for what he thinks he's worth, you'd be a rich man.

Hi Sam,

With respect to the technical problems your site has been experiencing, below are some recommendations to

1. Though the comments section of your blog is seperated into sections, there is still too much data being displayed per page view. If the database is doing a query per page view, then this is certainly taxing the database server. Here are some articles on the subject:

Dear Friends,

This was a controversial week in the House of Representatives. Specifically the controversy surrounded a resolution concerning the War in Iraq. The House also passed legislation that provides tax relief for small businesses.

Iraq Resolution

The Iraq war resolution which passed the House, disapproved of reinforcing our troops in Iraq. I strongly disapprove of this non binding resolution since I support our troops and am in full support of Victory in Iraq. It is hard to ignore the inconvenient truth that this ill-timed measure will aid the terrorists and depress the morale of our soldiers who are fighting to defeat them. This resolution is nothing more than a political stunt that does nothing to stop the war but instead gives aid and comfort to our enemy. Congress needs to continue to support and protect the members of the U.S. Armed Forces who are serving or who have served bravely and honorably in Iraq. Failure at this point is not an option.

Small Business Tax Relief

On Friday, the House passed the Small Business Tax Relief Act of 2007. This legislation extends critical tax provisions for small business owners. Highlights of this bill include extending and modifying the work opportunity tax credit for one year and increasing and extending expensing for small businesses.

Congressman McCaul meets with representatives from the Houston and Austin area Public Broadcast Systems (PBS) to discuss funding for educational children’s programs.

The present is embodied in Hexagram 29 - K'an (Water): We see the possession of sincerity, through which the mind is penetrating. Action in accordance with this will be of high value.
The fourth line, divided, shows its subject at a feast, with simply a bottle of spirits, and a subsidiary basket of rice, while the cups and bowls are only of earthenware. He introduces his important lessons as his ruler's intelligence admits. There will in the end be no error.
The fifth line, undivided, shows the water of the defile not yet full, so that it might flow away, but order will soon be brought about. There will be no error.
The situation is shifting, but neither Yin (the passive feminine force) nor Yang (the active masculine force) is gaining ground.

The future is embodied in Hexagram 40 - Hsieh (Deliverance): Advantage will be found in the southwest. If no further operations are called for, there will be good fortune in returning to the old conditions. If some operations are called for, there will be good fortune in the early conduct of them.

After so many recent affiliate losses for liberal talk radio, was it inevitable that so- called "progressive" hosts would eventually turn against one another?

Anonymous said...

Considering that Air America Radio's slow and painful disintegration has also damaged the careers of unaffiliated lefty talkers, it was probably only a matter of time before tensions reached the boiling point.

Anonymous said...

Though the mainstream media still refuses to admit to the accelerating loss of stations carrying liberal talk (Reuters still falsely claims Air America has 81), with new format changes in both Sacramento and Fresno, among other locales, it's been a tough week.

Anonymous said...

Because non- AAR talkers Ed Schultz and Stephanie Miller have had moderately more successful results to date, it's hard not to have a bit of sympathy for them, given station losses that were caused by Franken & Co's failure to generate a substantial audience. Both are syndicated by JonesMediaAmerica of Denver.

Anonymous said...

Oddly, however, Schultz and Miller get little credit from the left for their better performance, with the former actually the target of Internet conspiracy theories about his backers and real political leanings.

Anonymous said...

Oddly, however, Schultz and Miller get little credit from the left for their better performance, with the former actually the target of Internet conspiracy theories about his backers and real political leanings.

Anonymous said...

In recent days, the sniping between Air America's hosts and Schultz have become especially heated, with the on- air battle generating a great deal of attention on lefty blogs. As far as we're aware, Miller has not joined in on the fun.

Anonymous said...

For Schultz, Miller and other libtalkers who have never been a part of Air America, the loss of these stations could prove career- ending, as there soon may not be enough outlets remaining to justify the expense of syndication and attract advertisers.

Anonymous said...

Some Radio Equalizer emailers have speculated that this might be the reason why Schultz recently returned to hosting a local show in Fargo, which he had dropped after taking on the national program.

Anonymous said...

If any additional stations drop libtalk in the next several weeks, this could get even uglier
