With a growing demand for solar power in the United States, the U.S. solar manufacturing industry is also growing at a record pace. Recent announcements include the construction of the major new solar-cell manufacturing plants as well as a boost in production by several companies of polysilicon, the key raw material for solar cells.

In March, SolarWorld AG announced plans to build the country's largest solar manufacturing facility in Hillsboro, Oregon, that will produce 500 megawatts of solar cells each year by 2009. The company, a leading solar manufacturer, intends to start production at the site this summer at a rate of 100 MW per year, and will also expand its solar module factory in Camarillo, California, to match the capacity of its solar cell factory.

In April, Evergreen Solar announced plans to build a solar cell manufacturing plant in Westborough, Massachusetts, with the capacity to produce 70 MW of solar cells annually. The company also boosted its supply of polysilicon.

The expansion in silicon solar cell production is being accompanied by an expansion in the production of polysilicon, the key raw material for these solar cells. In late March, Hoku Materials broke ground on a facility in Pocatello, Idaho, that will be able to produce 2,000 metric tons of polysilicon per year.

In mid-April, Pennsylvania Governor Edward Rendell announced that AE Polysilicon Corporation would build a new facility in Bucks County. In late April, the Renewable Energy Corporation announced that it would add 6,000 metric tons of annual production capacity at its polysilicon facility in Butte, Montana.

Hemlock Semiconductor topped them all in early May by announcing plans to increase polysilicon production at its plant in Hemlock, Michigan, by 17,000 metric tons per year by 2010. The company, a subsidiary of Dow Corning Corporation, plans to invest $1 billion in the expansion, which will serve both the solar power and semiconductor industries.

I have been having a hard time finding a babysitter I trust lately. The latest one was on the phone all day and then got a part time job and was having her oldest daughter 17-watch all her own children and then her daycare children.

Farking annoying. The 17 year old was not a happy camper and subsequently my son had a rough time there.

The woman and her husband split up two weeks ago and she is just stressed out, but no way is her oldest daughter going to watch him when she doesn't even want to.

So I interviewed another woman today who only watches a baby and her son.

God I hope she works out. She seemed nice. But they all do.

I wish I could stay home with my son.

Anyway. He did really well over there when I interviewed her and is excited to go back tomorrow.

I wish I could quit my job.

The Katrina catastrophe indisputably revealed the corporate plan for America's cities. No sooner had the waters receded than corporate planners devised elaborate schemes for a "new" New Orleans - a "better" city in which Blacks would never again be allowed to become majorities. African American "leadership" should have understood that, with Katrina, corporate America had shown its hand: dramatic reduction of Black populations is at the core of the corporate urban "renaissance" model. Nevertheless, African Americans have failed to tackle the job of comprehensive urban planning that serves existing populations, and conserves Black political power for the future.
No Black Plan for the Cities, Despite the Lessons of Katrina

by BAR executive editor Glen Ford

"African American leadership institutions have failed Black New Orleans, and left inner city populations across the land defenseless in the face of Big Capital's schemes to remake urban America in white-face."

"Once the Black and poor were removed, an urban environment would be created implacably hostile to their return."

Pakistan city shut down by strike
A strike in the Pakistani city of Karachi has closed shops and cleared transport from the roads after two days of violence left 41 people dead.
The strike was called amid some of the worst street battles in recent years, triggered by the suspension of a top judge by President Pervez Musharraf.

Authorities have now banned gatherings of more than five people in the city.

Correspondents say the weekend's violence marked a serious escalation of a crisis that began in March.

In those two months, suspended chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry has become a focus for protesters trying to end military rule.

Karachi city police chief Azhar Farooqi told news agency Reuters that there had been no violence on Monday, although the city was very tense.

"The city is totally paralysed. Shops are closed and very little public transport is on the roads. People are scared," Mr Farooqi told the agency.

Opposition parties have called for a national strike and a day of mourning to protest against the bloodshed.

Meanwhile, provincial authorities have banned all political rallies as security forces tried to restore order.
"We have banned the assembly of more than five people in any public place in Karachi for Monday," Sindh province interior secretary Brigadier Ghulam Muhammad Muhtaram told news agency AFP.

The authorities failed to bring calm to Karachi, the capital of Sindh, on Sunday.

Troops were deployed across the city, but gunfire was heard in several areas, shops and vehicles were set alight and police were pelted with stones

His cravenly pro-US policy on the Middle East misunderstood Bush's real agenda and resulted in catastrophic failure

Avi Shlaim
Monday May 14, 2007
The Guardian

Tony Blair's opposition to an immediate ceasefire in the Lebanon war last summer precipitated his downfall. Now that he has announced the date of his departure from Downing Street, his entire Middle East record needs to be placed under an uncompromising lens.

Blair came to office with no experience of, and virtually no interest in, foreign affairs, and ended by taking this country to war five times. Blair boasts that his foreign policy was guided by the doctrine of liberal interventionism. But the war in Iraq is the antithesis of liberal intervention. It is an illegal, immoral and unnecessary war, a war undertaken on a false prospectus and without sanction from the UN.

Blair's entire record in the Middle East is one of catastrophic failure. He used to portray Britain as a bridge between the two sides of the Atlantic. By siding with America against Europe on Iraq, however, he helped to destroy the bridge. Preserving the special relationship with America was the be all and end all of Blair's foreign policy. He presumably supported the Bush administration over Iraq in the hope of exercising influence on its policy. Yet there is no evidence that he exercised influence on any significant policy issue. His support for the neoconservative agenda on Iraq was uncritical and unconditional.

Blair failed to understand that America's really special relationship is with Israel, not Britain. Every time that George Bush had to choose between Blair and Ariel Sharon, he chose the latter. Blair's special relationship with Bush was a one-way street: Blair made all the concessions and got nothing tangible in return.

American policy towards the Middle East was doomed to failure from the start, and the end result has been to saddle Britain with a share of the responsibility for this failure. The premise behind American policy was that Iraq was the main issue in Middle East politics and that regime change in Baghdad would weaken the Palestinians and force them to accept a settlement on Israel's terms. The road to Jerusalem, it was argued, went through Baghdad. This premise was wrong. Iraq was a non-issue; it did not pose a threat to any of its neighbours, and certainly not to America or Britain. The real issue was Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories and America's support for Israel in its savage colonial war against the Palestinian people.

Harsh words about Blair

The recent wave of protests and escalating attacks prove that what we are doing is not working so there needs to be an alternative that seeks to stabilize the region economically and politcally, not through war.

According to the Borgen Project, $340 billion has already been spent in Iraq and we have a $522 billion military budget. What has resulted from that money? The money would be better spent on plans such as the UN Millennium Development Goals to end global poverty. Just $19 billion annually can end starvation and malnutrition. Issues such as poverty foster a lot of the tensions that exist in the world today. As leaders in this world, we really need to get behind peaceful growth rather than war.
