Is the launch date for the new blog! What we have now will not go away. However, there will also be a "diary" type section where if you register with the site you will be able to post your own stories. And more, we will begin to offer audio, video and audio blogs from various special guests.

I spent the day (actually the past two weeks) building Honeydo Farms. Pics to follow.

Al Franken has work to do.

Despite declining popularity, Coleman comfortable in Senate re-election bid
by Mark Zdechlik, Minnesota Public Radio May 14, 2007
A new Minnesota Public Radio poll shows Republican Sen. Norm Coleman would handily defeat DFLers Mike Ciresi or Al Franken if the election were held today. That may sound like good news for Coleman, but the election is a year and a half away and the poll also shows some troubling signs for the incumbent. . . . Coleman's approval rating among Minnesota voters has slipped below 50 percent and some analysts say that's politically risky for him.
. . .
Matched up again Franken, Coleman would win 54 to 32 percent.

"After what seems like an eternity, on Wednesday, May 16, 2007, Mars enters one of the two zodiac signs it rules, Aries. The ancients considered Aries to be a sign of bestial behavior and violence, due to its fiery Cardinal nature. As a Cardinal sign, Aries epitomizes the essence of the fiery element, and manifests it very intensely. Since Mars is a malefic, this gives us something of a scorched earth feel to the sign of Aries. For this reason, even though Mars rules Aries, the planet is considered slightly happier in its other domicile Scorpio, where the watery element defuses and transforms Mars’s hot, warlike energy."

I interpret that to mean the new blog's gonna knock 'em dead.

"The famous French novelist Emile Zola had Mars in Aries conjunct Mercury on the cusp of the fifth house of creativity. As a Naturalist writer, his goal was to mimic everyday reality in his writing, but also display the animalistic, sordid aspects of human nature. How fitting for the “animalistic” Aries!""

One of the most horrible things I've ever seen.

That site has many uber-rightwing articles all over it (Coulter, Hoover Institute flunkies, etc.)

It came up on Amy Goodman's show, in the context of a discussion of 'honor killings' becoming more prevalent, the loss of human rights and the rise of extremism in Iraq since the US occupation. But at the aina site, because of the general tone of other articles, I get the feeling it's on there as an example of "just another reason to condemn those backward races."

Just an observation.

Senate to vote on ending war funding

By ANNE FLAHERTY, Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Senate Democrats are staging a dramatic anti-war vote this week, with moderates collaborating behind closed doors on legislation that could call on
President Bush to rethink his war strategy.

Majority Leader Harry Reid announced Monday that members will decide whether to cut off money for the
Iraq war next year, as well as consider a softer proposal calling for troops to leave this fall. The two measures would be offered as amendments to a water projects funding bill to be debated this week.

The votes, expected by Wednesday, will probably fall short of the 60-vote threshold usually needed to advance controversial legislation. But they will help Reid, D-Nev., test the Senate's political waters at a time when the Democratic caucus is divided on how far Congress should go to end the war.

"These are important votes," said Reid spokesman Rodell Mollineau. "This will give members an opportunity to debate these issues and have up-or-down votes" on whether to end the war.

Earlier this month, Bush vetoed a $124 billion supplemental bill, which would have funded the war but demanded troops begin coming home on Oct. 1.

Not having enough votes to override the veto but unwilling to back down, House Democrats last week pushed through a new bill that would fund the war only through July. That bill is unlikely to survive the Senate, where several Democrats say they do not want to appear to be turning their backs on the troops by funding combat in installments.

"On our side of the aisle, Democrats believe they should do something very, very close to what was done in the bill that was sent to the president to be vetoed," Reid said.

Accordingly, Reid and Sen. Carl Levin proposed that the Senate vote on legislation demanding troop withdrawals begin on Oct. 1 but allowing Bush to waive that requirement.

Administration hit by second resignation. “The White House was hit by two sudden resignations late Monday when Paul McNulty, a top Justice Department official, and Lanny Davis, the only Democratic member of the president’s civil liberties watchdog board, announced they were stepping down. Both resignations are likely to fuel allegations of White House political meddling in law enforcement and national security issues.”

Davis’s frustration reached a peak last month when White House lawyers engaged in what he described in his letter as “substantial” edits of the board’s annual report to Congress. […]

When Davis protested the attempted deletions, he said the board was told that the White House lawyers feared that because the material witness law was used by U.S. attorneys, a new probe of that issue would become a part of the larger controversy over the firing of U.s. attorneys. “I found this reason to be inappropriate–and emblematic of the sincere view, with which I strongly disagreed, of at least some administration officials and a majority of the Board that the Board was wholly part of the White House staff and political structure, rather than an independent oversight entity,” Davis wrote in his letter.

Habeas Corpus Evaporating
--------------------------------
Aziz Huq
May 14, 2007

http://www.tompaine.com/articles/2007/05/14/habeas_corpus_evaporating.php

Six months after Congress enacted the Military Commissions Act of 2006 with its eyes firmly on the polls, there have been many promises and proposals from legislators about how to remedy the damage done to civil liberties by that law—but little action. Despite the powerful advocacy of former military officials, religious figures, and law enforcement officials, Congress has as of yet failed to fix a single one of the MCA’s many flaws.

As efforts to rectify the MCA’s most egregious incursions of America’s separation of powers hang in the balance, it is worth recalling how much is at stake today—and how badly things could go wrong if enacted legislation doesn’t achieve real reform.

Proving than elections as well as emergencies can make bad law, Congress in the MCA bundled provisions that cut back on the supervision of executive branch actions in counter-terrorism operations. In particular, Congress made it easier to hold individuals without an adequate or lawful process to determine what they have in fact done to merit detention. It established a category of “Unlawful enemy combatant,” which is presently limited in function, but which may create an open-ended detention authority. And it’s of little use allowing people to challenge their executive detention in court, if the government can hold you for good reason, little reason, or almost no reason.

And that’s not to mention the system of “military commissions” established for terrorism cases that allow evidence from “torture lite,” a system that is wholly unnecessary for the protection of legitimate secrets because of the proven ability of the federal courts to handle such cases .

But perhaps the most immediately pernicious part of the MCA was a frontal assault on the rule of law: an attack on the writ of habeas corpus , the legal remedy historically used against unlawful detention by the executive, the remedy which allows a prisoner to go to court and demand that the executive demonstrate why his detention is lawful.

McNulty shaken by White House sniping. The New York Times has details on McNulty’s resignation, noting that he “had been shaken by the intensity of the storm over the removals and the sometimes sharp personal criticism directed at him from the White House and former Republican allies.”

McNulty blamed himself for failing to resist the dismissal plan when Mr. Sampson brought it to him in October 2006, according to associates. He took one prosecutor off the removal list but acquiesced to the removal of seven others, according to Congressional aides’ accounts of his private testimony to Congress on April 27. […]

Friends of Mr. McNulty said he had tried to be candid about what he knew of the removals. In his private Congressional testimony, Mr. McNulty said he did not realize until later the extensive White House involvement in Mr. Griffin’s appointment or Mr. Sampson’s nearly year-long effort to compile a list.

White House aides complained privately that Mr. McNulty’s testimony gave Democrats a significant opening to demand more testimony from the Justice Department and presidential aides. Several aides said he should have been combative in defending the dismissals.

Israel’s security cabinet has approved more assassinations of suspected Palestinian fighters in the Gaza Strip.

Officials say the decision is necessary to stop rocket attacks on southern Israel, but the operations have been condemned by human rights groups for putting Palestinian civilians at risk.

The move comes after the Israeli army said Palestinian groups fired five rockets from the Gaza Strip on Sunday, but reported only one impact inside Israel.

Yitzhak Herzog, the welfare minister, said: “For several hours the security cabinet discussed the very complex security situation in the Gaza Strip and its implications in Egypt’s Sinai and in the West Bank.

“We devoted considerable attention and a number of analyses during this discussion… The cabinet will be attentive about stopping rocket fire from this territory and weapons smuggling from Sinai,” he told local media.

Eli Yishai, the trade minister and a member of the security cabinet, said before the meeting: “We should concentrate on bringing order through targeted killings, the destruction of infrastructure and of military headquarters.”

Poll: 39% of Public Already Support Impeachment

While hack lamestream news anchors and reporters mock impeachment advocates like Dennis Kucinich as far left wackos, a new poll shows that 39% of responents supported impeachment of Bush AND Cheney, and that 42% of indepents, the people who will decide the next election, support impeachment. The poll, was reported in an article on townhall, by Matt Towery. He said,

Our InsiderAdvantage/Majority Opinion poll asked this:

“Would you favor or oppose the impeachment by Congress of President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney?”

Favor: 39 percent.

Oppose: 55 percent.

Undecided/Don’t Know: 6 percent.

The survey of 621 registered voters has been weighted for age, race, gender and political affiliation. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent.

About four out of 10 Americans favor impeaching the president and vice president. But the biggest news from this survey is not the overall results, but the opinions of independent voters, who usually decide presidential elections.

Forty-two percent of independents want Bush and Cheney impeached. These aren’t just voters who disapprove of the White House. Instead, they’re for initiating a process that could remove them from office.

Tower asked Bob Barr, the former congressman who initiated the impeachment process for Clinton, if the polls were near these. Barr replied, ” “I’m not sure we — [the leaders behind Clinton’s impeachment] — ever really had hard polling numbers in favor of impeachment that were this high when we were in the midst of the process. Perhaps, but I don’t recall it.”

The thing about polls like this is they can affect the populace. Once people see that so many people support impeachment, the idea gets easier for others to consider.

Our solar system might get booted from the suburbs to the boondocks of our galaxy when the Milky Way merges with its neighbor Andromeda in a few billion years, scientists say.

New calculations by T.J. Cox and Avi Loeb of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics show there is a small possibility that the sun and its planets will be exiled to the outer reaches of the merged galaxy.

"You could say that we're being sent to a retirement home in the country," Cox said.

Their findings have been submitted for publication to the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

A galactic dance
Computer simulations by Cox and Loeb suggest the Milky Way and Andromeda will make their first close pass in about 2 billion years. The two galaxies, currently separated by about 2.2 million light-years, are rushing towards each other at about 310,000 mph (500,000 kph). One light-year is equal to about 6 trillion miles (10 trillion kilometers).

During that first close encounter, the two galaxies will circle around each other a few times and their stars will begin to intermingle. The sun at that time will still be a hydrogen-burning main-sequence star, but it will have brightened and heated enough to boil away the Earth's oceans, other studies predict.

The new computer model finds there is a 12 percent chance that during this first brush between Andromeda and the Milky Way, the sun will be pulled from its present position into a "tidal tail," a streamer-like cluster of orphan stars stripped from their parent galaxies.

After the galaxies circle each other a second time, there is a 3 percent chance our sun will be more tightly bound to Andromeda than the Milky Way.

"To a certain degree, Andromeda will steal our solar system," Cox told SPACE.com.

In 5 billion years, Andromeda and the Milky Way will have completely merged to form a single, football-shaped elliptical galaxy. Loeb jokingly calls this future galaxy "Milkomeda," but others have also referred to it as "Milkymeda" or the "Andromeda Way."

You've all probably read this, since it's three months old, but I'll post it anyway, because I think it's interesting:

Left-wing Critics of Israel Launch Blog To Combat Alleged Intimidation

...The Union of Progressive Zionists, a 60-campus student activist network that has co-hosted events with Breaking the Silence, one of two groups of dissident soldiers cited in the Israeli diplomat’s report, came under fire from the Zionist Organization of America, which attempted to oust the progressive union from a pro-Israel campus coalition. The ZOA charged that the UPZ’s affiliation with Breaking the Silence sullied Israel’s image on campus, in direct contravention of the Israel on Campus Coalition’s mission of bolstering the Jewish state’s standing in academia.

While the ZOA’s effort to expel the UPZ from the 31-member alliance was unsuccessful, the call to banish the group is gaining traction in some circles. The American Jewish Congress is weighing whether to resign from the ICC as a result of the progressive union’s continued inclusion. And this week, Janet Lehr, a hawkish activist, circulated an e-mail message asking recipients to send e-mails to ICC members protesting the executive committee’s decision to keep the liberal Zionists in the coalition.

Skirnir then went to the land of the dwarfs in Svartalfheim where they made a silk rope called Gleipnir. Gleipnir was made from the sound a cat makes when it moves, a woman's beard, the roots of a mountain, the sinews of a bear, the breath of a fish and a birds spittle. That is why these things are very rare in the world today.

Skirnir then returned to Asgard with the silk rope and gave it to Odin, where he and a group of gods invited Fenrir to break it on the island of Lyngvi in middle of Lake Amsvartnir. Fenrir took the challenge but when he saw Gleipnir, he suspected that magic was involved and hesitated until Tyr offered to place his right hand into Fenrir's mouth. Fenrir was bound, but when he could not break the rope, he bit Tyr's hand off. The gods then took a chain called Gelgja and tied it to Gleipnir, then tied Gelgja to a boulder called Gjoll and drove Gjoll one mile into the earth. After that was done, they placed an even larger boulder called Thviti on top of Gjoll. The gods then gaged Fenrir with a sword, it's tip on the roof of Fenrir's mouth and the hilt on his lower jaw and that is where he will be until Ragnarok.

When Ragnarok comes, Fenrir's chain will break, and he will join his father, brother, sister and the giants in the mighty battle that will end the nine worlds.

We get to the springs (it's not exactly convenient) and here's another group which has 3 guys named jim and sharing close the same close b-days.

U.S. divulges new details on released Gitmo inmates

The Pentagon on Monday released the names of six former Guantanamo detainees who U.S. officials say re-emerged as Islamist fighters in Afghanistan after their release from the U.S. military prison in Cuba.

wow what a surprise. six people who had normal lives by their standard are swooped off their feet, thrown in a far away prison and tortured for years and when released decide to take up in the fight against the people that did this to them.

Drinking Beer Causes Climate Change?

Murdoch Media Wastes No Time In Blaming Working Class For Global Warming

Less than 48 hours after News Corp chief Rupert Murdoch announced that his worldwide media corporation was Going Green, and that he intended to reduce his corporation's "carbon footprint" to zero by 2010, he's lived up to his promise to transform the thinking of News Corp's audience by guilt-tripping the Australian public over the amount of beer they drink and how they cut their grass :

Having just one schooner of beer after each working day costs the planet 120kg in greenhouse emissions each year.
Working fathers doing traditionally male household jobs like mowing the lawn and odd jobs around the home produce almost 3.75 tonnes of emissions each year.

Yesterday it was revealed Australian mothers juggling child-rearing responsibilities and housework pumped out more than four tonnes of emissions a year.

Simon Hunter, a father-of-two and owner of a wood-fired pizza restaurant in Seaforth, usually does two separate trips in his car each day - one to the bank in the morning and one 20-minute drive to work in the afternoon.

He uses a toaster and kettle at breakfast, as well as his computer.

The household's big energy guzzler is the airconditioning system, which he said would be switched on twice a day every second day.

Bush and Murdock going green! Heh! their green is the dollar!!

One of the best ways to the cure of ED is to see the disease in its
correct light. It should merely be seen as a disease, and disease it is,
that has affected the male sex organ. Correct and proper
href="http://www.besthealthmed.com/ed_assessment.html">ED assessment
is
necessary to do away the disease from one’s life. People attach a lot of
other factors like shame, embarrassment, fear, low self esteem etc and
these make the treatment of erectile dysfunction all the more complex
