Operation stop Sponge Bob Ahmadinejad

The new last vestige
President George W. Bush met privately with Focus on
the Family Founder and Chairman James Dobson and
approximately a dozen Christian right leaders last
week to rally support for his policies on Iraq, Iran
and the so-called "war on terror."

It gets crazier:
Dobson went on to enumerate a series of meetings
convened by Christian right leaders in Washington to
discuss the supposedly existential threat to the
United States from a nuclear Iran.

“I heard about this danger [from Iran] not only at the
White House but from other pro-family leaders that I
met during that week in Washington," he said. “Many
people in a position to know are talking about the
possibility of losing a city to nuclear or biological
or chemical attack. And if we can lose one we can lose
ten.

"If we can lose ten we can lose a hundred," he added,
“especially if North Korea and Russia and China pile
on.”

Densest element discovered

A major research institution has just announced the discovery of the densest element yet known to science.

The new element has been named “Bushcronium.”

Bushcronium has one neutron, 12 assistant neutrons, 75 deputy neutrons, and 224 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 311. These particles are held together by dark forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons.

The symbol for Bushcronium is “W”.

Bushcronium’s mass actually increases over time, as morons randomly interact with various elements in the atmosphere and become assistant deputy neutrons in a Bushcronium molecule, forming isodopes. This characteristic of moron-promotion leads some scientists to believe that Bushcronium is formed whenever
morons reach a certain quantity or concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as “Critical Morass”.

When catalyzed with money, Bushcronium activates Foxnewsium, an element that radiates orders of magnitude more energy, albeit as incoherent noise, since it has 1/2 as many peons but twice as many morons.

Colombia's police chief and the head of police intelligence were forced to retire Monday as the government alleged that police illegally tapped calls of opposition political figures, journalists and members of the government for the past two years.

The scandal multiplied U.S.-ally President Alvaro Uribe's woes on a day judicial authorities also ordered the arrest of 20 politicians and business leaders, including five congressmen, on criminal conspiracy charges for signing a 2001 pact with illegal right-wing militias.

“Art of Peace” International Conference in Venezuela

May 11

By: Brian Landever and Dada Maheshvarananda

An Impression

As the Venezuelan Minister of Defense firmly placed his hands on my shoulder for my desired photo op, I found myself filled with pride. I am certainly not the type to commonly have such sentiments in the company of anyone that represents forceful means, but the worthiness of the people-first system that the high general stands to defend made it hard to avoid elation in his close presence. It is the preference for the latter of these two ideas: defense over aggression, which had been increasing my delight throughout the day at Chief General Raúl Isaías Baduel's international peace conference. Staring at the crowd throughout the two day event beginning on the 27th of April in the military academy of Caracas was a quote which characterized the intention of the seemingly contradictory situation.

"When they asked me about a weapon able to resist the power of the atomic bomb, I suggested the best of all: Peace." -Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

It was clear that Baduel had brought together peace activists, intellectuals, professionals, spiritual and religious leaders, artists, and many young members of his armed forces to explore the art of overcoming a lust for violence and the bigger cannon, replacing it with the exploration of the different lanes along the road of peace.

Wal-Mart issues warning on profits 1 hour, 45 minutes ago

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. warned Tuesday that its profits in the current quarter could fall short of expectations after reporting an 8 percent gain in first-quarter earnings amid cost-cutting and strength in its warehouse clubs and international businesses. The company continued to struggle with its namesake discount business.

The tepid outlook from Wal-Mart — considered a barometer for the retail industry — could serve as a warning bell that rising gasoline prices and a weakening housing market will continue to eat away at consumer spending in the coming months. The announcement came as Home Depot Inc. reported a 29.5 percent drop in first-quarter profits on a slight increase in sales.

For its first quarter, Wal-Mart said it earned $2.83 billion, or 68 cents per share, compared with $2.62 billion, or 64 cents per share, in the previous year quarter.

Wal-Mart had revenue of $86.41 billion in the three months ending April 30, up from $79.67 billion in the year prior.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial expected first-quarter earnings per share of 68 cents and revenues of $86.9 billion.

"Quite honestly, we're not satisfied with our overall performance, Wal-Mart President and Chief Executive Lee Scott said during a pre-recorded conference call.

Same-store sales rose 0.6 percent in the first quarter at Wal-Mart's U.S. stores, with its Sam's Club warehouse stores accounting for all of the gain. Wal-Mart's namesake stores slipped 0.1 percent in the quarter, while Sam's Club warehouse stores rose 4.7 percent. Same-store sales ,or sales at stores opened at least a year, is a key gauge of retailer health because it measures growth at established locations open at least a year rather than at newly opened ones.

Riots rock Copenhagen, 50 arrested

Berlin, May 15(IRNA) Danish police on Tuesday arrested 50 people for their role in street riots in the 'free state Christiania' district of Copenhagen, German news reports said.

Hundreds of protestors erected barricades and set several vehicles on fire late Monday night
At least 12 people were detained and one police officer was injured in the clashes, according to Danish television.

Several anarchist and militant leftist groups took part in the riots which have sparked after authorities announced the demolition of an illegally built house in the Christiania area which has a semi- autonomous status since 1971.

The 800 residents of Christiania and the Danish government are involved in a bitter dispute over the legal position of the alternative community in the free state district.

The Danish capital was also the scene of riots in March when more than 650 people were arrested following the closure of a youth center.

Thompson offers apology on gay comment

By SCOTT BAUER, Associated Press Writer Sat May 12, 5:52 PM ET

LAKE GENEVA, Wis. - Tommy Thompson cited a dead hearing aid and an urgent need to use the bathroom in explaining on Saturday why he said at a GOP presidential debate that an employer should be allowed to fire a gay worker.

Speaking to reporters after giving an address at the state GOP convention, Thompson also said he was suffering from the flu and bronchitis and had been admitted to a hospital emergency room three days prior to the May 3 debate.

"Nobody knows that," Thompson said. "I've been very sick. ... I was very sick the day of the debate. I had all of the problems with the flu and bronchitis that you have, including running to the bathroom. I was just hanging on. I could not wait until the debate got off so I could go to the bathroom."

Thompson said he thought he was being asked if there were enough laws already to address discrimination in the workplace. The question at the debate was, "If a private employer finds homosexuality immoral, should he be allowed to fire a gay worker?"

Thompson replied: "I think that is left up to the individual business. I really sincerely believe that that is an issue that business people have got to make their own determination as to whether or not they should be."

US to go ahead with missile plans
The US will not allow Russia to stop it from deploying anti-missile defences in Europe, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said.
"I don't think anyone expects the United States to permit a veto on American security interests," she said after meeting President Vladimir Putin.

Her comments come after she and the Russian president agreed to tone down their rhetoric in public exchanges.

Russia's foreign minister said they had resolved to focus on concrete issues.

The high-level talks in Moscow are the first since Mr Putin accused the US in February of seeking global dominance.

The two sides are divided over several issues, including the missile defence shield plan.

Washington is not seeking confrontation, but wants Moscow's co-operation over sensitive issues such as Kosovo, Iran and missile defence, the BBC's defence and security correspondent Rob Watson says.

But the agreement to tone down the rhetoric does not mask the continuing differences and the sense in Moscow that Washington has long been ignoring legitimate Russian concerns, our correspondent says.

The Kremlin has also expressed opposition to Washington's backing for the independence of Kosovo from Serbia. Russia believes Kosovo should remain part of Serbia.

For her part, Ms Rice has criticised what she sees as democratic setbacks in Mr Putin's Russia.

'Positive talks'

Ms Rice held talks on Tuesday with Mr Putin, Russian Security Council Secretary Igor Ivanov, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, former Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov and Russian civic leaders.

Edwards Challenges Rivals To Back Feingold Amendment To Defund War
By Greg Sargent | bio
A new statement from John Edwards challenges unnamed Senators -- read: Hillary and Obama -- to back Russ Feingold's amendment to defund the war:

“It is time to end this war. The only real power Congress has to end the war is their funding power, which is why I and others have been calling on them to use it for some time.

"I would actually go further than Reid-Feingold and use the funding authority, not just to set an ultimate deadline, but to force an immediate withdrawal of 40-50,000 troops, followed by a complete withdrawal in about a year. But using the funding authority to bring this war to an end is exactly the right thing to do. Every Senator who believes this war is wrong and wants to end it should support Reid-Feingold."

This is of course very much in keeping with Edwards' strategy of carving out a niche for himself as the candidate demanding action from the Congress he's no longer a member of. He's also repeatedly demanded that Congress send the same Iraq supplemental bill back to Bush again and again despite his vetoes.

As it happens, the Feingold amendment does create something of a dilemma in particular for Hillary and Obama. Will they vote for it?

We've got queries in to both campaigns. We'll keep you posted.

White House Greenwash
Bill Scher
May 15, 2007
To "greenwash" is to spin something as good for the environment, when it really amounts to direct harm or damaging inaction.

Like Monday, when President Bush addressed the nation in the Rose Garden, and called for Congress to pass his "20 in 10" plan, cutting our gas usage 20 percent in 10 years.

As David Roberts noted in January after Bush first announced this plan, "the vaunted 20 percent is a reduction in projected gas use, not current gas use. So it's slower growth, not really a 'reduction' at all."

Classic greenwash. More happy rhetoric, masking more inaction, keeping us energy dependent, doing nothing about global warming.

When the Supreme Court last month told the Bush administration to follow the law and treat greenhouse gases as a pollutant under the Clean Air Act, environmental groups noted that the ruling should end the administration's efforts to prevent states from adopting their own vehicle emissions standards.

But after today's White House announcement, Frank O'Donnell at Clear Air Watch sees more stalling:

...the new Bush administration Executive Order regarding greenhouse gas emissions ... appears to be an attempt to sideswipe the greenhouse gas standards developed by the state of California and adopted by 11 other states...

...Under the new Bush plan, EPA would have to gain the “concurrence” of other federal agencies such as the Energy and Transportation Departments before moving ahead with any plan to limit greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, the White House Office of Management and Budget and the Council on Environmental Quality would oversee the effort.

In other words, the White House has just wrapped the EPA in a straitjacket of bureaucratic process.

A simple decision on the California request – “yes” would be the simple and correct answer – has just been made a LOT more complicated.

Is this a violation of the Supreme Court ruling? It surely is in spirit. But the White House knows the wheels of justice move slowly, and it's happy to take advantage and continue stonewalling the states.

May 15, 2007 -- WMR has learned that the circle of customers in the DC Madam case extends far beyond the customers of Pamela Martin and Associates that is identifiable from phone lists; Further dissemination of the phone lists has been blocked by US District Judge for DC Gladys Kessler. A number of the escorts of Pamela Martin were invited to "parties" in the Washington D C area, some of which were attended by noted Washington politicians and other VIPs.

The Bush administration and its allies have also attempted to seed disinformation that the phone list consists of Republicans and Democrats. WMR has also learned that the customers of Pamela Martin, extending back to 1993 were overwhelmingly Republicans, particularly Republican congressional members and staff members who were behind the multiple congressional investigations and the ultimate impeachment of President Bill Clinton in the late 1990s.

Although ABC News concluded there was nothing "newsworthy" from the phone records it obtained, several Washington- and New York-based corporate media entities, including newspapers, magazines, and networks are actively pursuing various leads in the case, many of which have been previously reported by WMR. We are also actively pursuing several leads in the burgeoning scandal.

WH: ‘All options are on the table’ regarding Wolfowitz. ABC reports:

In a significant shift that a White House official tells ABC’s Jonathan Karl that “all options are on the table” regarding World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz, and “it is an option question” whether he should remain as President of the World Bank.

This statement is the first time the White House has not expressed “full confidence in Paul Wolfowitz.”

Falwell was 73, died of congestive heart failure.

His wiki page is already updated.
Tidbit-
The ghostwriter for Falwell's autobiography is Mel White who has ghostwritten many books (including some for Pat Robertson and Jim Bakker), but has never written anything negative about homosexuals in those books. White publicly announced he was gay in 1994. White stated that Falwell makes controversial remarks about homosexuals for attention, and White believes and hopes Falwell's attitude towards homosexuals will "improve".

Jon Stewart Exposes the Bull$h*t “Ongoing Investigation” Excuse
By: SilentPatriot @ 9:50 AM - PDT Whenever the Bushies find themselves embroiled in scandal — USA purge, Scooter Libby leak, Abu Grahib/Guantanamo Bay torture, etc. — they always resort to the "we-can't-talk-about-ongoing-investigations" defense. Sadly, it works; the media falls for it–hook, line and sinker–every time. Jon Stewart and Rob Riggle finally call them out on it.

"So the only time this administration will discuss an issue is after an investigation they have not cooperated in is finished?"

Are you listening, "Half Hour News Hour"? This is how it's done.

The Story Of W - A President’s Submission

As thousands of people go to bed hungry each night the issue of global poverty is more serious than ever and it can be changed, there are strategies in place to end global poverty. Thus far $300 billion has been spent on the war in Iraq and less than half of aid from the United States goes to the poorest countries where people earn less than $2 a day. The United States agreed to support the UN’s Millennium Development Goals, a plan to end global poverty by 2015, however according to the Borgen Project the funding to support the end of malnutrition and starvation is under funded by $19 billion annually. Congress needs to become aware of these important issues ad make a change.

The U.S should not forget the committment made towards the U.N. Millennium Goals in 2000. According to The Borgen Project, an annual $19 billion dollars is needed to end world hunger by the year 2025. To my sense, it is almost unacceptable to have spent so far more than $340 billion in Iraq only, when we have more than war immunities to change the world and eliminate poverty

While the U.S. government and media keep focusing on defense policies and the war in Iraq, 1.2 billion people in the world continue surviving on less than $1 dollar a day. We should not forget the commitment the U.S. made towards the U.N. Millennium Goals (a pact of ending extreme world hunger by the year 2025) in 2000. According to The Borgen Project, an annual $19 billion dollars is needed to end world hunger by the year 2025. To my sense, it is almost unacceptable to have spent so far more than $340 billion in Iraq only, when we have more than war immunities to change the world and eliminate poverty.
