Thursday Thread

Good morning, all!

Today on the show: Larry Johnson, former CIA official, on the upcoming hearings on the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame.

This hour, we'll air the one-minute Sam Seder Show rant that YearlyKos auctioned off on eBay last month. What's our winning bidder going to say? Will it be worth $720?

Find out more about the YearlyKos Convention! (Better yet ... go!)

UPDATE: Here's the transcript of the rant that we just aired.

In August of 2006, 9/11 family members released a statement questioning the "entire veracity" of the 9/11 Commission report. [1]

In September of 2006, a documentary entitled "9/11: Press For Truth" was released, and family members at the National Press Club called for a new investigation into the events of 9/11. [2]

In October of 2006 a New York Times poll found that only 16 percent of Americans believe the Bush administration is telling the truth about 9/11. [3]

NONE of these stories were covered by the so called 'progressive media'.

(It is time for the 'progressive media' to start covering these stories.)

It is time to stop pretending that the very basis of the so-called 'war on terror' is the ONLY subject that the Bush administration has NOT lied about.

Please visit 911pressfortruth.com, google video, or netflix.com for more information on 9/11: Press For Truth. And visit patriotsquestion911.com, or wtc7.net to start researching 9/11 today.

This is Michael Woolsey of visibility911.com on behalf of 911blogger.com, thank you for your time.

By MICHAEL R. GORDON and PATRICK HEALY---NY Times

WASHINGTON, March 14 — Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton foresees a “remaining military as well as political mission” in Iraq, and says that if elected president, she would keep a reduced military force there to fight Al Qaeda, deter Iranian aggression, protect the Kurds and possibly support the Iraqi military.

In a half-hour interview on Tuesday in her Senate office, Mrs. Clinton said the scaled-down American military force that she would maintain would stay off the streets in Baghdad and would no longer try to protect Iraqis from sectarian violence — even if it descended into ethnic cleansing.

In outlining how she would handle Iraq as commander in chief, Mrs. Clinton articulated a more nuanced position than the one she has provided at her campaign events, where she has backed the goal of “bringing the troops home.”

She said in the interview that there were “remaining vital national security interests in Iraq” that would require a continuing deployment of American troops.

The United States’ security would be undermined if parts of Iraq turned into a failed state “that serves as a petri dish for insurgents and Al Qaeda,” she said. “It is right in the heart of the oil region,” she said. “It is directly in opposition to our interests, to the interests of regimes, to Israel’s interests.”

“So it will be up to me to try to figure out how to protect those national security interests and continue to take our troops out of this urban warfare, which I think is a loser,” Mrs. Clinton added. She declined to estimate the number of American troops she would keep in Iraq, saying she would draw on the advice of military officers.

White House officials using RNC email accounts? From Dan Froomkin:

One curious aspect of yesterday’s document dump is that it shows e-mails from J. Scott Jennings, who is Karl Rove’s deputy at the White House, coming from an e-mail address at gwb43.com — a domain owned by the Republican National Committee.

It makes some sense that White House officials might have and use such accounts when they conduct party business, rather than White House business. But the distinction between party and government business seems to have been forgotten here — which I guess is exactly the point.

Eggen and Kane write in The Post: “Democratic congressional aides said they will investigate whether using the private address for government business violated laws against using taxpayer resources for political work or signaled that White House officials considered the firing of U.S. attorneys to be primarily a political issue. Jennings did not return a call to his office seeking a comment.

“‘As a matter of course, the RNC provides server space and equipment to certain White House personnel in order to assist them with their political efforts,’ RNC spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt said.”

Tell Congress to say NO to this deadly budget cut, and restore this critical funding for women's reproductive health funding.

Despite the fact that more than half a million women and girls in the developing nations die from pregnancy-related causes, the United States only gave $435.5 million in 2006 to these countries to provide for reproductive health care for poor women. For every woman or girl who dies, 20 more suffer from serious disease, disability, or physical damage caused by complications of pregnancy and childbirth, and lack of adequate health care. Most of these deaths and injuries are preventable and/or treatable.

Edwards' Campaign Headquarters In N.C. Evacuated

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- A white powder found in a letter at the campaign headquarters of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards came back negative.

Edwards' deputy campaign manager Jonathan Prince released a statement this morning saying the Chapel Hill office is reopening.

The offices were evacuated yesterday after a staff member opened the letter and found the powder. Campaign employees worked from home.

White powder in letters has been associated with anthrax after an attack in 2001 killed five people and sickened 17. The substance was mailed to lawmakers on Capitol Hill and members of the news media in New York and Florida just weeks after the September 11th terrorist attacks.

Caroline Myss: What ultimately I have hope in, as I talk to people about this mystical renaissance that we are in the midst of right now, is that people are being called, just like they were in the old days of the classic mystics who were called into monasteries. They difference is these individuals are not meant to be recluses mystics without monasteries. They are being called to fall in love with God in an impassioned way wherever they are and they are given a ferocious appetite to discover that power of prayer, to discover that force to hold a door open and watch that simple act of respect give a man back his will to live. Nothing is more profound than to awaken your power to channel grace at a distance and know that the grace that flows through you is a source of healing. That they can access what the mystics did, that they can become a vessel of transformation through the power of their soul that is what the journey of illumination within one's Castle is all about. That's when a person discovers for the first time what the real meaning is of knowing he or she was truly born for a higher purpose. That higher purpose has to do with a Divine calling and not an earthly occupation. Therein lies the seduction of God.

The important thing to remember on the Gonzo issue is that the administration was avoiding any Congressional oversight by USING THE EMERGENCY POWERS to replace attorneys general WHEN NECESSARY in the Patriot Act for POLITICAL PURPOSES. Yes, W had the right to fire AGs, even though this rarely, rarely happens EXCEPT AT THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ADMINISTRATION. This is yet another example of the abuse of executive power in the name of national security to undermine the Legislative and Judicial powers vested by our Constitution to balance the threat of an imperial presidency. This is why it stinks to high heaven. This is a high crime and at the very least misdemeanor because of the lies told to Congress. Watch, they'll be more! Gotta love e-mail. It keeps track of those high crimes and misdemeanors!

Sen. Leahy says he'll subpoena Rove over growing US Attorney scandal Mike Sheehan
Published: Thursday March 15, 2007

Powerful Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) says he will subpoena presidential adviser Karl Rove to answer questions about the growing U.S. Attorney dismissal scandal enveloping the White House.

Leahy said he will issue the subpoena if Rove doesn't agree to appear first, reports CNN. "He can appear voluntarily if he wants," Leahy told CNN's Wolf Blitzer. "If he doesn't, I will subpoena him."

The Vermont senator also told embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who mulled whether to allow "some staff people or lower level people" to testify, that it wasn't his decision. "It's mine and the committee's," Leahy said, per CNN.

The Senate Judiciary Committee, which Leahy chairs, will vote today on whether to authorize the subpoenas to Rove and 13 other current and former officials in the Bush administration, 'The Politico' reports.

Statements On Firings of Prosecutors Are Key Issue

By Dan Eggen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, March 15, 2007; A01

In testimony on Jan. 18, Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales assured the Senate Judiciary Committee that the Justice Department had no intention of avoiding Senate input on the hiring of U.S. attorneys.

Just a month earlier, D. Kyle Sampson, who was then Gonzales's chief of staff, laid out a plan to do just that. In an e-mail, he detailed a strategy for evading Arkansas Democrats in installing Tim Griffin, a former GOP operative and protege of presidential adviser Karl Rove, as the U.S. attorney in Little Rock.

"We should gum this to death," Sampson wrote to a White House aide on Dec. 19. "[A]sk the senators to give Tim a chance . . . then we can tell them we'll look for other candidates, ask them for recommendations, evaluate the recommendations, interview their candidates, and otherwise run out the clock. All of this should be done in 'good faith,' of course."

The conflict between documents released this week and previous administration statements is quickly becoming the central issue for lawmakers who are angry about the way Gonzales and his aides handled the coordinated firings of eight U.S. attorneys last year.

Democrats and Republicans are demanding to know whether Gonzales, Deputy Attorney General Paul J. McNulty and other Justice officials misled them in sworn testimony over the past two months. Yesterday, Republican Sen. John E. Sununu (N.H.) joined a handful of Democrats in calling on President Bush to fire his attorney general and longtime friend.

Gonzales has declined to address the apparent contradictions in detail, saying only that he was unaware of the specifics of the plan that Sampson was orchestrating.

The inconsistencies between Justice's positions and the documents are numerous. On Feb. 23, for example, a Justice legislative affairs aide wrote to Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) that the department "was not aware of Karl Rove playing any role in the decision to appoint Mr. Griffin." But internal Justice e-mails show that "getting him appointed is important" to Rove and was closely monitored by political aides in the White House.

It was most certainly torture-induced if it even happened at all.

Why should we believe HIS confession when we see rampant evidence that the real culprits extend into our own Government.

Dick Cheney, for starters, has shot a friend in the face and avoided police contact. He also started a war for his Dubai-based company, and various other string-pullers. He also, according to Norman Mineta before the 9/11 Commission, recalled how Cheney deliberately allowed the Pentagon to get hit.

Why should we not assume he's responsible?
He discouraged Tom Daschle from investigating!
as reported as if it was no big deal in Newsweek.

He's threatening more similar attacks, so let's get him OUT already!

Iraq Reservists Face a 'Perfect Storm' of Post-Traumatic Stress

Soldiers who have served in Iraq are killing themselves at higher rates than in any other war in which such data have been tracked. To understand why, just look at the system.

The sole aspect of the Iraq war upon which Americans are united is the need to provide post-deployment mental health care for our soldiers. The good news is that no one wants to abandon the veterans coming back from Iraq as happened with far too many Vietnam veterans. The bad news is that we already have.

those who don't learn history are doomed to repeat history:

Caesar summoned the Senate to meet in the Pompey's Theater on the Ides of March, 44 BC for the purpose of reading a petition, written by the senators, asking him to hand power back to the Senate. According to the Greek biographer Plutarch, a few days before, the soothsayer Titus Vestricius Spurinna apparently warned Caesar, "Beware the Ides of March." Caesar disregarded the warning:

"The following story, too, is told by many. A certain seer warned Caesar to be on his guard against a great peril on the day of the month of March which the Romans call the Ides; and when the day had come and Caesar was on his way to the senate-house, he greeted the seer with a jest and said: "Well, the Ides of March are come," and the seer said to him softly: "Ay, they are come, but they are not gone." [2]
As the Senate convened, Caesar was attacked and stabbed to death by a group of senators who called themselves the Liberatores ("Liberators"); they justified their action on the grounds that they committed tyrannicide, not murder, and were preserving the Republic from Caesar's alleged monarchical ambitions.

Hillary and Obama flub "is homosexuality immoral" question; Edwards does okay

Pretty crappy, and offensive, answers from both Hillary and Obama yesterday when asked whether they think that homosexuality is immoral (the question was prompted, of course, by the General Pace controversy, in which the nation's top uniformed military leader said he thinks homosexuality is immoral).

Rather than giving the clear cut answer that Senator John Warner (R-VA) gave, "I respectfully, but strongly, disagree with the chairman's view that homosexuality is immoral," or that John Edwards gave, "I don't share that view," Hillary and Obama squirmed.
Hillary: "Well, I'm going to leave that to others to conclude."

Obama: Newsday caught Obama as he was leaving the firefighters convention and asked him three times if he thought homosexuality is immoral.

Answer 1: "I think traditionally the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman has restricted his public comments to military matters. That's probably a good tradition to follow."

Answer 2: "I think the question here is whether somebody is willing to sacrifice for their country, should they be able to if they're doing all the things that should be done."

Answer 3: Signed autograph, posed for snapshot, jumped athletically into town car.
What? Hey Senator Obama, do you think Jews are immoral? Jesus Christ.

To Hillary's credit, her campaign did some damage control last night:
Clinton's spokesman, Philippe Reins, said the New York senator "obviously" disagrees with Pace and that everyone, including the general, "has the right to be wrong, but should not inject their personal beliefs into public policy."

Then Wednesday night, the campaign released a statement from the senator herself, saying, "I disagree with what he said and do not share his view, plain and simple."

As for Hillary, this is not good. Many in the gay community love her, while many fear that while she generally talks a good talk, she won't be there for us when we need her. This kind of vacillation and avoidance only feeds those fears. And it's not the first time. Recently, she spoke at the board meeting of the largest gay civil rights group, the Human Rights Campaign (all the pro-gay presidential candidates were invited, including Giuliani, but to her credit only Hillary accepted (where were Obama and Edwards - and Giuliani, for that matter?)). While HRC (the organization) proudly posted Hillary's speech on YouTube and as the top story on their Web site home page, the other HRC (Hillary Rodham Clinton) didn't tout her appearance at all, unlike her appearance the next week at the pro-choice women's group EMILY's List, which was feted by her campaign to all the media. When asked, twice, why her campaign appeared to be hiding her gay appearance, Hillary responded:
"You'll have to ask my campaign."

There are so many important things to go after the Bush administration for.

Sam are you having some technical difficulties? In the first segment from 10:06-10:18 CST you were silent from about 10:10 until 10:18 and then in the middle of the 60sec rant from the guy the feed went silent too and then you jumped back on at 10:25.

I am listening online and my other internet feeds were working fine, but just wanted to mention that.

House Approves Three Open
Government Bills: Bush Veto Coming?

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/031407S.shtml

The House Wednesday passed three bills to open government records to the public, brushing aside White House opposition and in one case, a veto threat. The measures would force government to be more responsive to Freedom of Information Act requests, make contributions to presidential libraries public and overturn a 2001 presidential directive giving the president authority to keep his records from public view.

KBR's $400 Million Iraq Question

There's a $400 million question facing the Pentagon's largest contractor, KBR, the former Halliburton subsidiary responsible for more than 50,000 personnel in Iraq and billions in government contracts: Will the mammoth corporation be forced to repay the government nearly half a billion dollars because it hired private security forces in Iraq, including Blackwater USA, when the Army itself was supposed to be providing it with protection? An interactive map details the global reach of Halliburton at the beginning of the invasion of Iraq.

UN Condemns "Pathetic" Global Response to Darfur

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/031307F.shtml

Sudan's government has "orchestrated and participated in" war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur, according to a report by UN investigators. An estimated three million people have been displaced and more than 200,000 have been killed since 2003. A peace deal was signed last May by the government and one of the main rebel groups. The rest refused, however, and the violence has only increased.

J. Sri Raman | Bush's Democracy Project in Bangladesh and Nepal

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/031307P.shtml

J. Sri Raman writes: "Who says that President George Bush and his men and women promote democracy only by destructive wars? They do so also through creative, unconventional diplomacy. Look at their latest achievements in Bangladesh and Nepal. In both these countries bordering India, whose ruling establishment is enlisted in the Bush crusade to save democracy (especially 'emerging' democracies), the cause has hit a major roadblock. And it is representatives of Washington who has placed a mega-sized boulder on the path to much-awaited elections in both cases."

Terribly Exciting
By Ben Stein
Published 3/12/2007 12:09:31 AM

A few days ago, a man from a slick new magazine about business sent me an e-mail. He wanted me to do a column for him about what was "new, hot and exciting -- or terrible -- in business today." The only catch was that he did not want me to complain about the rich. This is what I sent him:

Here is what's new and hot and exciting (or terrible) in the world of money today:

The average wage of the American worker adjusted for inflation is lower than it was in 1973. The only way that Americans have been able to maintain their standard of living at the middle and lower ends has been to send more family members to work and to draw down savings or go into debt or both.

The most sought after jobs in the United States now are jobs in finance in which basically almost no money is raised for new steel mills or coal mines, but immense sums are raised to buy companies, recapitalize them -- which means pay the new owners immense special dividends and other payments for going to the trouble of taking over the company. This process results in fantastically well-paid investment bankers and private equity "financial engineers" and has no measurably beneficial effect on the economy generally. It does facilitate the making of ever younger millionaires and an ever more leveraged American corporate structure.

An entire new class of financial entity has been created called "the hedge fund." It is new not in the sense that there were not always funds that hedged by selling short or buying assets uncorrelated with other assets. The new part of this phenomenon is that it is based on a demonstrably false premise: that these entities can consistently outperform wide stock indexes. They have not and cannot, and yet their managers and employees for a time are paid stupendously well.

A New Network Forms to Close U.S. Overseas Military Bases

by Medea Benjamin

In a new surge of energy for the global struggle against militarism, some 400 activists from 40 countries came together in Ecuador from March 5-9 to form a network to fight against foreign military bases. The conference began in Quito, then participants traveled in an 8-bus caravan across the country, culminating in a spirited protest at the city of Manta, site of a U.S. base.

While a few other countries such as England, Russia, China, Italy and France have bases outside their territory, the United States is responsible for 95% of foreign bases. According to U.S. government figures, the U.S. military maintains some 737 bases in 130 countries, although many estimate the true number to be over 1,000.

A network of local groups fighting the huge U.S. military complex is indeed an “asymmetrical struggle,” but communities have been trying for decades to close U.S. military bases on their soil. Their concerns range from the destruction of the environment, the confiscation of farmlands, the abuse of women, the repression of local struggles, the control of resources and a broader concern about military and economic domination.

Kyle Kajihiro, director of the organization Area Hawaii, explained that the U.S. military occupies vast areas of Hawaiian territory, territory which was once public land used for indigenous reserves, agricultural production, schools and public parks.

SUSPICIOUS "MIDDLE EASTERNERS" CHEER TERROR ATTACK FROM MOVING VAN
SOURCE: THE NEW YORK POST AND THE BERGEN RECORD

TRIO WHO CHEERED ATTACK FACE BOOT AS ILLEGAL ALIENS

By AL GUART (NEW YORK POST) www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/

September 13, 2001 -- Three men who celebrated as the Twin Towers crumbled are facing deportation, The Post has learned. The men, described as illegal immigrants from the Middle East, were arrested Tuesday afternoon in a white Chevy van near the Meadowlands based on a tip from witnesses who saw them "cheering" and "jumping up and down" in Liberty State Park after the attack, a source said.

Witnesses took the plate number and the FBI sent out an alert to area cops, reading: "Vehicle possibly related to New York terrorist attack . . . Three individuals with van were seen celebrating after initial impact and subsequent explosion."

Port Authority cops nabbed the three as they drove along Route 3 in East Rutherford in the van, which had the words "Urban Moving Systems" painted on it. After grilling the men and searching the van in vain for explosives, the FBI turned the men over to the Immigration and Naturalization Service for deportation.

The feds declined to release the men's identities or nationalities. "The agency has decided it will not make any comments about this at this time," said INS spokesman Kerry Gill. Officials at "Urban Moving" claimed to be unaware of what had happened.
BERGEN RECORD (New Jersey)
FIVE MEN DETAINED AS SUSPECTED CONSPIRATORS
Wednesday, September 12, 2001
www.bergen.com/news/2bombvan200109125.htm
By PAULO LIMA Staff Writer

Eight hours after terrorists struck Manhattan's tallest skyscrapers, police in Bergen County detained five men who they said were found carrying maps linking them to the blasts. The five men, who were in a van stopped on Route 3 in East Rutherford around 4:30 p.m., were being questioned by police but had not been charged with any crime late Tuesday.

However, sources close to the investigation said they found other evidence linking the men to the bombing plot. "There are maps of the city in the car with certain places highlighted," the source said. "It looked like they're hooked in with this. It looked like they knew what was going to happen when they were at Liberty State Park."

Sources also said that bomb-sniffing dogs reacted as if they had detected explosives. The FBI seized the van for further testing, authorities said. Sources said the van was stopped as it headed east on Route 3, between the Hackensack River bridge and the Sheraton hotel. As a precaution, police shut down Route 3 traffic in both directions after the stop and evacuated a small roadside motel near the Sheraton.

Sources close to the investigation said the men said they were Israeli tourists, but police had not been able to confirm their identities. Authorities would not release their names. East Rutherford officers stopped the van after the FBI's Newark Office broadcast an alert asking surrounding police departments to look for a white Chevrolet van, police said.

"We got an alert to be on the lookout for a white Chevrolet van with New Jersey registration and writing on the side," said Bergen County Police Chief John Schmidig. "Three individuals were seen celebrating in Liberty State Park after the impact. They said three people were jumping up and down."

East Rutherford officers summoned the county bomb squad, New Jersey state troopers, and FBI agents, who waited alongside the van as prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney's Office tried to obtain a warrant to search the van late Tuesday, Schmidig said. The FBI alert, known as a BOLO or "Be On Lookout," was sent out at 3:31 p.m. It read:

"Vehicle possibly related to New York terrorist attack. White, 2000 Chevrolet van with New Jersey registration with 'Urban Moving Systems' sign on back seen at Liberty State Park, Jersey City, NJ, at the time of first impact of jetliner into World Trade Center. "Three individuals with van were seen celebrating after initial impact and subsequent explosion. FBI Newark Field Office requests that, if the van is located, hold for prints and detain individuals."

State police Col. Barry W. Roberson confirmed the traffic stop at a late night news briefing at state police headquarters in Trenton. He would not elaborate, however. A business traveler staying at the Homestead Studio Hotel said she watched state troopers drive the suspects away in a procession of state police cars about 5 p.m. "First, they told us we could hang out in the lobby, but then they told us to leave," the traveler said.

At 10 p.m., the hotel guest said she could see at least two police officers searching through the van while a crowd of other officers kept their distance.

ODIGO SAYS WORKERS WERE WARNED OF ATTACK
By Yuval Dror

Odigo, the instant messaging service, says that two of its workers received messages two hours before the Twin Towers attack on September 11 predicting the attack would happen, and the company has been cooperating with Israeli and American law enforcement, including the FBI, in trying to find the original sender of the message predicting the attack.

Micha Macover, CEO of the company, said the two workers received the messages and immediately after the attack informed the company's management, which immediately contacted Israeli security services, which brought in the FBI. "I have no idea why the message was sent to these two workers, who don't know the sender. .......And I don't know if our information was useful in any of the arrests the FBI has made," said Macover. Odigo is a U.S.-based company whose headquarters are in New York, with offices in Herzliya.

If I was in charge of Amerikka, this is what I would do...

I'd bring home almost all of our troops, especially those that are "policing."

Once I got them home I'd shore up our borders and secure our ports, etc.

I would legalize grass for adults. Adult means...if you're old enough to fight wars, you're old enough to smoke a legal joint.

I'd use the huge amount of loot that would be rolling in from grass sales to beef up our educational system.

Free education and health care for everybody but schooling would be mandatory.

toniD,

interesting article. i have mixed feelings about ben stein. his history and association with nixon raises some real questions. that being said he is right to the point that america has fallen tremendously. i don't know about you but when i look around my hometown in upstate new york, the factories and places that produced things are gone, here in ohio, there's a real good reason they call it the rust belt. the cincinnati area used to have several auto manufacturing plants, now they are green fields.

financial services fails to add to the economy because it doesn't add value by transforming raw material to something else. all it does is shift money from one place to another.

one final note, i do like stein's sense of humor. probably because sarcasm makes you think.

toniD said...

More Ben Stein. I guess he's soured on the economy...

Here's what else is new and exciting (or terrible) in money: there is real poverty among the soldiers who fight our wars. There are fist fights to get children into $30,000 a year kindergartens and pre-schools in the right neighborhoods in Manhattan. There are 40 million Americans without health care insurance. There are almost 40 million baby boomers with no savings for retirement. There is a long waiting list for Bentleys at the dealership in Beverly Hills.

There are soldiers' wives selling blood to buy toys for their kids. There is a man selling non-functioning body armor who threw a $10 million Bat Mitzvah for his daughter.

In Brentwood, where the houses start at $3 million, the housewives complain about what a terrible country America is. In Clinton, South Carolina, where the textile mill closed fifteen years ago and there is real hardship, the young men still believe in America and their fiancees at Presbyterian College wait for them while they fight in Iraq.

This is a small part of what's new and exciting (or terrible) in America in the world of money right now.

Time Redesign Opens With "How The Right Went Wrong"
Time Magazine | KAREN TUMULTY | March 15, 2007 09:16 AM

A generation ago, fresh off the second biggest electoral landslide in American history, Ronald Reagan surveyed the wreckage that had been the opposition and declared victory. Standing before 1,700 true believers at the 1985 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), he proclaimed, "The tide of history is moving irresistibly in our direction. Why? Because the other side is virtually bankrupt of ideas. It has nothing more to say, nothing to add to the debate. It has spent its intellectual capital." At this year's conference two weeks ago, Reagan's name was invoked more than anyone else's. But the mood at the most storied annual gathering of conservatives was anything but triumphal. John McCain, the Establishment favorite to win the 2008 Republican nomination, skipped CPAC entirely but did show up on David Letterman the night before, choosing the most aggressively glib venue to semiofficially announce his candidacy. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney was there to make his pitch for 2008 but had to compete with a man who was working the crowd in a dolphin costume and a T-shirt identifying him as flip romney: just another flip flopper from massachusetts. Ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani barely mentioned the social issues on which he parts ways with conservatives, except to joke, "I don't agree with myself on everything." And the only memorable sound bite of the whole affair came from right-wing telepundit Ann Coulter, whose idea of an ideological rallying cry was to declare Democratic hopeful John Edwards a "faggot."

I agree with Sam that we should ask questions about 9/11. Apparently, DailyKos which he seems to have much appreciation for, does not - at least as long as those questions remain within their "acceptable" bounds. Check out DailyKos's FAQs yourself:

http://www.dkosopedia.com/wiki/DailyKos_FAQ

"DailyKos accepts that the 9/11 attacks were perpetrated by agents of Al-Qaeda. It is forbidden to write diaries that:

1. refer to claims that American, British, Israeli, or any government assisted in the attacks
2. refer to claims that the airplanes that crashed into the WTC and Pentagon were not the cause of the damage to those buildings or their subsequent collapse

Authoring or recommending these diaries may result in banning from Daily Kos."

Waas: Gonzales, A Likely Target, Helped Block Wiretapping Probe
By Paul Kiel - March 15, 2007, 11:48 AM
Murray Waas, over at National Journal, adds to Alberto Gonzales' woes. It's another one of those complicated simple stories, and the gist is this: Gonzales knew that an internal Justice Department investigation would likely end up focusing on him, nevertheless, he went to Bush and got him to shut it down.

From National Journal:

Shortly before Attorney General Alberto Gonzales advised President Bush last year on whether to shut down a Justice Department inquiry regarding the administration's warrantless domestic eavesdropping program, Gonzales learned that his own conduct would likely be a focus of the investigation, according to government records and interviews.
Bush personally intervened to sideline the Justice Department probe in April 2006 by taking the unusual step of denying investigators the security clearances necessary for their work.

It is unclear whether the president knew at the time of his decision that the Justice inquiry -- to be conducted by the department's internal ethics watchdog, the Office of Professional Responsibility -- would almost certainly examine the conduct of his attorney general....

Current and former Justice Department officials, as well as experts in legal ethics, question the propriety of Gonzales's continuing to advise Bush about the investigation after learning that it might examine his own actions. The attorney general, they say, was remiss if he did not disclose that information to the president. But if Gonzales did inform Bush about the possibility and the president responded by stymieing the probe, that would raise even more-serious questions as to whether Bush acted to protect Gonzales, they said.

Back to Story - Help
Mortgage malaise may bring recession: Merrill 2 hours, 1 minute ago

House prices could tumble 10 percent this year and force the United States into recession if a credit crunch taking shape in the mortgage market gathers steam, Merrill Lynch said in research notes this week.

If correct, the prospects of this scenario will prove troubling for equities investors, who could face a stock market decline of 30 percent or more as measured by the S&P 500 index <.SPX >, the brokerage said.

Merrill said the biggest concern is that tighter lending standards in the mortgage market, even if confined to lower-quality borrowers, will constrain overall housing demand and hamper recovery in the struggling housing market.

"It is not inconceivable (given what is happening now to mortgage originations) that we end up with something closer to a 10 percent decline in home prices this year," Merrill Lynch said.

Merrill said this alone would slow the economic expansion to a rate of about 1.5 percent to 1.75 percent this year, which it termed a "growth recession."

The traditional definition of a recession is two consecutive quarters of declining gross domestic product.

However, if the inflation-fighting Federal Reserve were to keep rates unchanged to contain price growth -- instead of cutting by 1 percentage point in the second half of 2007 as Merrill expects -- then this would put the probability of an outright recession in the second half at "very close to 100 percent."

In the past, moves by financial markets to price in some risk of a recession, without actually experiencing one, has led to an average drop in the S&P 500 of 16 percent in sell-offs lasting 13 weeks.

"But if we do end up seeing a recession, then it's game over: the historical record shows that the average decline in the S&P 500 is 34 percent and the average duration is 37 weeks - more than double the magnitude and triple the duration of classic non-recessionary correction," Merrill added.

Ahh, as we all predicted -- Dennis Kucinich is about to become one of Fox's favorite Democrats, here on last night's Fox's "The Big Story with John Gibson".

GIBSON: But look at who did this. It was the George Soros group, moveon.org , and the Daily Kos, which is run by a guy named Markos, that insisted that FOX be decertified. Why is it that they have such control over Democrats?

KUCINICH: I would say that I think we need a politics which does not condemn people. So I am not going to condemn them. But what I am going to say is that FOX is a legitimate news agency that has the ability to reach out to millions of Americans, so why not get that message out? That is what I want to do, and all Democrats should be capable of doing it.

FOX is a good litmus test because if you can stand the scrutiny of FOX, with what you stand for, and all of the FOX News agencies that gather the information, their anchors can ask you questions, well that is part of what the test is of leadership.

Again, we should be thinking about a campaign that unites people. And I am ready to reach out to conservatives.

They brought Dennis on Gibson's show to defend Fox, not to let Kucinich talk about any issue. In fact, have they ever invited him on before? But now, as Fox looks for cover against charges that it's the right-wing's premier propaganda arm, there was Dennis being their useful idiot, eager to legitimize them.

And to stress a n obvious point -- the question here isn't "being afraid to go on Fox News", although that's how Fox's apologists (including Dennis) want to spin this. The question is, why lend legitimacy to an operation that is trying to actively working in concert with the Republican Party to destroy Democrats and everything progressive?

Daily Show: Serving at the Pleasure of the President
By: SilentPatriot @ 10:11 AM - PDT
With the whole prosecutor purge scandal unraveling before our eyes, the phrase "serve at the pleasure of the President" has become a popular talking point for those who seek to dismiss the removal of US attorneys mid-term as perfectly appropriate. Once again, Jon digs through the Bush administration video vault and finds some other instances where that phrase has been used.

"Serve at the pleasure of the President" was literally the #1 administration talking point, as the recently-released internal communications prove. Anticipating a political upheaval over the unprecedented firings, Gonzo's deputy Kyle Sampson formulated a talking-point strategy (.pdf):

Zbigniew Brzezinski on The Daily Show

"The real problem is that we have had a policy lately that has been dividing our friends and uniting our enemies, and should be the other way around."

He also said that the idea of the Global war on terror now seems to be the idea that if we end the war with Iraq, the Iraqis would swim across the Atlantic to attack us here. I am paraphrasing here.

Hey 9/11 Conspiracy Nuts....

Why don't those brave, honest hosts of Air America who SEEM to ally themselves with you (like Sam and Randi)....

EVER come right out and SAY what the "truth" is (Mossad planting thermite charges, missile (not jet) hitting the Pentagon, United 93 shot down).

Why do they always couch it in "Well, there are some theories I don't hold with...but I want the questions out there"?

Maybe Cheney and AIPAC have something on them?!!?!? Make them SOUND sympathetic, but they're really "in on it"?!?!??!

Tampering with justice to stop an inquiry or probe that may place you in hot water.

Remember this one,.. an inquiry of justice - stopped cold.

7/18/2006

George Bu$$h waves his royal sceptre from his throne,.. gives the thumbs down sign and stops a probe into gonzales' DOJ Rules that permitted domestic spying.

How was this done.

The lawyers of the Justice Department from the Office of Professional Responsibility were to probe the legality of the rules written by Gonzales which permitted the NSA to conduct internal domestic spying/wire taps, beyond FISA court review.

Gonzales did not want any inspection of these rules/authorizations by DoJ allowing the NSA to spy. Gonzales went to George Bu$$h to stop the probe. George bu$$h to stop the probe by the Office of Professional Responsibility just denied the inspectors the needed security clearances to complete the probe. The probe/inspection of domestic spying program then was immediately halted, the circumvention of the FISA Law by this administration was not delved into.

...

The department's Office of Professional Responsibility announced earlier this year it could not pursue an investigation into the role of Justice lawyers in crafting the program, under which the National Security Agency intercepts some telephone calls and e-mail without court approval.

At the time, the office said it could not obtain security clearance to examine the classified program.

Under sharp questioning from Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Arlen Specter, Gonzales said that Bush would not grant the access needed to allow the probe to move forward.

Pointless Diversion
Yet day after day the presses and the "new media" are caught in the whirlwind of government and corporate marketing departments: diversions that keep the call for peace from being heard.

"Resignation Calls" will not bring about peace in the world, or a middle class wage for all workers nor will it bring about free universal education and healthcare. It is my belief that more and more people will see the benefit of democratically collective actions when we daily argue and work for the free universal education and healthcare, middle class wages for all and clean, healthy housing for all.

When to ask for what we want "Bread & Roses," then will we begin our struggle with positive actions that are more likely to gain wide public support from those silent friends that share our needs.

Pentagon Redacted Statements of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed Discussing Torture
According to a Pentagon transcript released yesterday, Khalid Sheik Mohammed confessed to masterminding 9/11 and “more than 30 other terror attacks or plots” at a military hearing held in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Known among CIA officers as “Al-Qaeda’s toughest prisoner” in Guantanamo Bay, Mohammed has long been the subject of extreme interrogation techniques, including waterboarding. “CIA officers who subjected themselves to the water boarding technique lasted an average of 14 seconds before caving in…KSM won the admiration of interrogators when he was able to last between two and two-and-a-half-minutes before begging to confess.” The CIA also reportedly abducted his seven- and nine-year-old sons and flew them to the United States for interrogation.

In his remarks to a military tribunal, Mohammed raised objections to the treatment he received, but his statements on torture were redacted by the Pentagon in their publicly released transcript:

I know American people are torturing us from seventies. [REDACTED]. I know they are talking human rights. And I know it is against American constitution, against American laws.

Mohammed claimed that CIA interrogators warned him he would be subjected to illegal treatment, calling it “bad luck”:

They said every law, they have exceptions, this is your bad luck you have been part of the exception of our laws.

Kenneth Roth of Human Rights Watch questioned the legality of the closed-door sessions and whether Mohammed’s confession was actually the result of torture. “We won’t know that unless there is an independent hearing,” he said. “We need to know if this purported confession would be enough to convict him at a fair trial or would it have to be suppressed as the fruit of torture?”

See the full Pentagon transcript HERE.

House committee approves Iraq withdrawal plan. “A Democratic plan to require the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq passed its first test on Thursday as the House Appropriations Committee voted to endorse the proposal, overcoming Republican opposition. Members voted 37-27 along party lines to uphold a provision in a $124 billion war spending legislation that calls for troops to leave Iraq before September 2008, and possibly sooner if the Iraqi government does not meet certain benchmarks.”

On Dennis Kucinich....read this, from this week's Cleveland Scene...

The unstoppable elf
While at least 16 lefties around the country waddle toward Congressman Dennis Kucinich's presidential campaign, smitten by his antiwar stance, the Federal Election Commission has proved again what Clevelanders knew all along: Kucinich's lone skill is holding press conferences starring Dennis Kucinich.

Remember his last campaign, when he blew $2.9 million in taxpayer money just to make himself a punch line on The Daily Show? Turns out Kucinich (D-Playland) was also putting on a clinic on how to violate federal election law.

An FEC audit shows that Kucinich kept spending taxpayer dollars long after he was ineligible to spend the cash. In the FEC's eyes, the congressman was eliminated from the race on March 4, 2004, after which he could use only private money. (Others believe Kucinich was eliminated in fifth grade, when doctors discovered he was an alien sent to earth to scare children and take up valuable space in Fourth of July parades.)

Despite being ineligible, Kucinich's ego, which has its own charge account at Dillard's, pressed on. He campaigned until July 29 -- the day Democrats picked John Kerry and finally shook Kucinich from their leg. In the meantime, he spent almost $2 million more -- almost $500,000 of which came from money that included federal funds. The feds can't say exactly how much extra taxpayer cheese the elf blew, but they've asked Kucinich to repay $135,515.

Kucinich also failed to report hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions and expenses, and failed to itemize another half-million dollars in contributions. The report officially makes Kucinich's run the least successful campaign since Punch's failed bid for treasurer of the Harbor Inn Dart Team, which we lost to a guy named Ron.

The campaign did not return multiple calls, but would presumably defend the congressman's decision to continue embarrassing himself. Though he earned only four votes, do you know how many of those little shampoos you can steal in five extra months on the campaign trail?

Chiquita Admits Payments to Colombian Paramilitaries

One of the world’s largest banana producers has agreed to plead guilty to paying a Colombian right-wing paramilitary group. Chiquita Brands International will pay a twenty-five million dollar fine as part of a settlement for making payments to the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia. The Justice Department says Chiquita paid out more than $1.7 million between 1997 and 2004. Nearly half came after the group was designated a foreign terrorist organization in 2001. Chiquita has previously admitted to making unspecified “protection” payments following what it says were threats from militant groups. Chiquita -- formally United Fruit Company -- has seen several accusations of ties to criminal activity in its Latin America dealings.

"I mean, there's no way we know the whole story. There's simply no way. And uh, we've talked about that on this program..."

Please Sam, point me to the show where you announced that representatives of a GOOD portion of family members (family members themsevles) called for a new investigation into the attacks. Please Sam, point me to the show where you announced that the family members that fought for the creation of the 9/11 Commission declared that Commission "derelict in its' duties" and questioned the "entire veracity" of the 9/11 Report. Please Sam, point me to the show where you announced the release of a documentary endorsed by the family members that fought for the creation of the 9/11 Commission, and brings into question the ENTIRE 9/11 Report (Randi doesn't count).

But since Khalid has squealed on the "A to Z" of 9/11, perhaps he can provide some answers to a few troubling little questions that still have us 9/11 "conspiracy nuts" running around in circles;

- Was Khalid Shaikh Mohammed responsible for the FBI ordering the 1993 World Trade Center bombing to go ahead? In his confession, KSM says he ran the attack but fails to explain why it was the FBI who provided the terror cell with the bomb materials through their informant.

- Was Khalid Shaikh Mohammed responsible for NORAD completely reversing its standard operating procedure on the day of 9/11?

- Was Khalid Shaikh Mohammed responsible for the collapse of three steel buildings, one that was not hit by a plane, from fire damage alone for the first and only time in history?

- Was Khalid Shaikh Mohammed responsible for warning, according to Newsweek, a group of top Pentagon officials to cancel their flights on the evening of September 10th due to security concerns?

- Was Khalid Shaikh Mohammed responsible for the record number of 'put' options, speculation that the stock of a company will fall, that were placed on American and United Airlines in the days preceding September 11th? This despite a September 10th Reuters report stating 'airline stocks set to fly.'

- Was Khalid Shaikh Mohammed responsible for blocking FBI anti-terrorism investigations before 9/11 related to the bin Laden family and Saudi charities that were front groups for Al-Qaeda?

- Was Khalid Shaikh Mohammed responsible for advising the Secret Service not to remove President Bush from a completely unsecured Florida elementary school by letting them know he wasn't a target on 9/11?

Things are going to start popping now at Air America..

Air America Radio Appoints VP Of Programming

Air America Radio has announced its first new major hire since being purchased by the Green Family Media – David Bernstein will join the network as vice president of Programming.

He is currently the owner/president of Bernstein Talent, a consulting firm for radio talk show hosts. He will begin overseeing all Air America programming beginning March 19.

“David is just the Rx that the doctor ordered,” agreed Air America President Mark Green and COO Scott Elberg. “He has a successful track record of over two decades of building ratings and branding talk radio. Because his ability to work with high profile talent is unparalleled, David will be a vital part of Air America 2.0.”

"To quote Mark Green, I’m an Air American," said Bernstein. "So c’mon, let’s get going!”
