IWD is now an official holiday in Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. The tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc with flowers and small gifts. In some countries IWD has the equivalent status of Mother's Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers.

The new millennium has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women's and society's thoughts about women's equality and emancipation. Many from a younger generation feel that 'all the battles have been won for women' while many feminists from the 1970's know only too well the longevity and ingrained complexity of patriarchy. With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increased critical mass of women's visibility as impressive role models in every aspect of life, one could think that women have gained true equality. The unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women's education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men.

However, great improvements have been made. We do have female astronauts and prime ministers, school girls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family, women have real choices. And so the tone and nature of IWD has, for the past few years, moved from being a reminder about the negatives to a celebration of the positives.

Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements.

Today is International Women's Day.

When governments and women's rights campaigners mark International Women's Day today, spare a thought for the plight of women in impoverished developing countries where campaigners are taking huge personal risks to work for equality and freedom. Across Guatemala, women will be demonstrating to demand that their government takes action to halt the slaughter of women which has reached such levels that it has been named a "femicide."

The statistics are stark: everywhere you look in the developing world, women's rights are under threat, be it from sex trafficking, denial of education or job discrimination.

Figures compiled by the British government, development agencies and human rights groups resemble a roll call of shame:

* Two-thirds of the world's 800 million illiterate adults are women as girls are not seen as worth the investment, or are busy collecting water or firewood or doing other domestic chores.

* Two million girls aged from five to 15 join the commercial sex market every year.

* Domestic violence kills and injures more people in the developing world than war, cancer or traffic accidents.

* Seventy per cent of the world's poorest people are women.

* Violence against women causes more deaths and disabilities among women aged 15 to 44 than cancer, malaria, traffic accidents or war.

* Women produce half the world's food, but own less than two per cent of the land.

* Of the more than one billion people living in extreme poverty, 70 per cent are women.

* Almost a third of the world's women are homeless or live in inadequate housing.

* Half of all murdered women are killed by their current or former husbands or partners.

* Every minute a woman dies as a result of pregnancy complications.

* Women work two-thirds of the world's working hours, yet earn only a tenth of its income.

* One woman in three will be raped, beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime.

* 43 million girls are not able to go to school.

* Last year, one million HIV-positive women died of AIDS-related illnesses because they could not get the drugs they needed.

* Human Rights Watch, in reports on 15 countries including Afghanistan, Brazil, Morocco, Papua New Guinea, Togo and South Africa, has identified violence against schoolgirls, child domestic workers and those in conflict with the law as on the rise.

* Women across the developing world are the victims of systematic abuse.

Bush prescription drug program in need of price negotiation
by Chris in Paris · 3/08/2007 04:23:00 AM ET

Fear must be running through the veins of Republicans and their Big Pharma lobbyists right now because there is talk in Washington about, horror of horrors, price negotiation for prescription drugs. Bush and the Republicans, never a group to stand in the way of shoveling cash to big business at the expense of middle class consumers, tried their best to ignore common sense but even AARP (who helped re-elect Bush) is now complaining about prescription drug prices being out of control.

The prices for about 200 prescription drugs commonly used by seniors in the United States rose nearly twice the rate of inflation, a seniors group said Tuesday, making a case for letting the government negotiate drug prices.

Insomnia pill Ambien, made by Sanofi-Aventis, topped the list with a 30 percent rise in price in 2006, said the report by the seniors' lobby AARP, formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons.
Since when has price negotiations been a bad thing? Do the Republicans really live their own lives this way and not negotiate? Isn't it time to be on the side of the American citizen and not a damned corporation? Is it really that difficult to help out the American middle class

Senator Domenici got himself a lawyer

So, Senator Domenici hired the lawyer who represented convicted felon/former Congressman Randy "Duke Cunningham:
Sen. Pete V. Domenici (R-N.M.) has hired a top defense attorney to handle the pending ethics investigation into allegations that he pressured a federal prosecutor to bring indictments against New Mexico Democrats on the eve of the 2006 elections.
The first job for Domenici's lawyer is to sort through the Senator's evolving statements on the matter. TPM Muckraker documented a couple of them here and here.

REPORT: 72 Percent Of Army Brigades Have Served Multiple Tours of Duty
The Center for American Progress has released a new study on the state of our military readiness. The report — “Beyond the Call of Duty: A Comprehensive Review of the Overuse of the Army in the Administration’s War of Choice in Iraq” — undertook a “massive research project to identify, brigade by brigade, the number and duration of deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan by the active Army.” The report found a large majority of Army brigades have served multiple tours:

– Brigades with one tour in Iraq or Afghanistan: 12

– Brigades with two tours in Iraq or Afghanistan: 20

– Brigades with three tours in Iraq or Afghanistan: 9

– Brigades with four tours in Iraq or Afghanistan: 2

The report also points out that a total of 420,000 troops have deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan more than once, and over 84,000 National Guard and Reservists have done multiple tours.

The multiple deployments and extended tours of duty are taking a serious toll on our soldiers. Two-thirds of Army brigades are “not ready for wartime missions,” and one Pentagon survey found that troops in Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from chronic shortages of armored vehicles, heavy weapons, and communications equipment.

Libby’s pardon problem. Newsweek reports that Scooter Libby “does not qualify to even be considered for a presidential pardon under Justice Department guidelines,” which in part “require a petitioner to wait a period of at least five years after conviction or release from confinement (whichever is later) before filing a pardon application.” President Bush can easily waive the rules, but up until now he “seems to have followed those guidelines religiously.”

And it says here he will be as good on the political front as he was in the nets. Still, it'll be ironic if Richter, the Democrat, ever butts heads with Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani. As New York's mayor, it was Giuliani who named his dog "Goalie" after Richter. Mike is currently getting a degree at Yale.

Subpoenas Likely for Justice Officials in Prosecutor Firings

By Dan Eggen and Paul Kane
Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, March 8, 2007; A07

Senate Democrats said yesterday they are preparing to subpoena five senior Justice Department officials as part of a widening probe into whether eight U.S. attorneys were fired for political reasons.

The fallout from the investigation into why the prosecutors were dismissed continued yesterday. Sen. Pete V. Domenici (R-N.M.) hired a top defense attorney to handle a related probe by the Senate ethics committee, which is investigating allegations that he pressured a New Mexico prosecutor to bring indictments against a Democrat just before the November elections.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote today to authorize subpoenas for Justice officials, including Michael A. Battle, who carried out the firings, and Kyle Sampson, chief of staff to Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales.

Republicans are likely to exercise their right under committee rules to delay the issue for a week, several aides said. But Democrats said the subpoena push signals their intent to continue digging into the firings.

The new subpoena threat followed dramatic testimony Tuesday from six of the fired U.S. attorneys, including two who alleged that GOP lawmakers or staffers had made improper telephone calls asking about ongoing criminal investigations. A third prosecutor said a Justice Department official warned him two weeks ago that he and his colleagues should keep quiet or risk retaliation.

Bush Muzzles More Scientists On Warming

The New York Times has the scoop:

Internal memorandums circulated in the Alaskan division of the Federal Fish and Wildlife Service appear to require government biologists or other employees traveling in countries around the Arctic not to discuss climate change, polar bears or sea ice if they are not designated to do so.

In other words, if you're an arctic biologist, but you're not cleared to talk about climate change, you can't speak to reporters about melting at the ice caps, starving polar bears, or global warming.

These orders coming in early spring are particularly suspicious. Why? Because it will be the early melting of the ice caps that leads to the starvation and potential extinction of many artic species like polar bears, ringed seals, walruses, etc.

Sounds like they're trying to get a jump on any stories that might get passed through the grapevine on an early melt this year.

Let me try and make something clear to the Democratic members of the House and Senate. There's a world of hurt coming your way, and time is running out. On Iraq, there are no more Friedman Units. There are no more acceptable six month windows to see if the same "plan", called a different name, will produce different results.

The situation in Iraq continues to decay; the pressures on our armed forces and, especially, reserve forces continue to edge closer to the breaking point; our troops continue to be put in harm's way on the off chance not that a "plan" will work, but that an in-country miracle will occur.

Gates: 'Closed' Gitmo hearings needed Mike Sheehan
Published: Thursday March 8, 2007

The Secretary of Defense is urging closed hearings for detainees at Guantanamo Bay because of concerns over "classified information," The Los Angeles Times is reporting.

"Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates on Wednesday defended a Pentagon decision to hold secret hearings for 14 suspected terrorists transferred to Guantanamo Bay last year," writes Julian E. Barnes for the Times, "despite the fact that similar proceedings have been held in open session."

Barnes notes that the decision "represents a change in administration policy and was criticized by former military lawyers and human rights organizations."

Gates dismisses the criticism, saying "he did not think that closing the combatant status review tribunals for the 14 suspects, who include alleged Sept. 11 organizer Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, would undermine the credibility of the process," writes Barnes.

"For these particular individuals, a good deal of the discussion associated with their evaluation is going to [involve] classified information," Barnes quotes Gates at the Pentagon. "That's the reason."

From the new owners of Air America:

Air America was a large, smart idea to counter the near-monopoly on talk radio by the far (f)right. But like most start-ups, the business plan collided with reality. Six CEOs over its first three years and various missteps and misspending sent it into Chapter 11.

It's now ready to go from The Perils of Pauline to The Little Engine that Could. How? First, by focusing on the radio fundamentals of making a strong line-up even stronger; second, by connecting to other major progressive organizations to be mutually fortifying; and third, **-by being a multi-media content company involving other information platforms mobile, video, broadband, blogs, websites. It's time to think outside the (radio) box.-**

The twin goals are to make it profitable and influential. One without the other won't work. If it's not a business, it'll go out of business.

But it'll be a business with a sharp point of view. The era of on-the-one-hand-on-the-other-hand liberalism is over -- or as Robert Frost once wrote, "a liberal man is too broad-minded to take his own side in a quarrel." For all those who worry about messianic misleaders governing on a right wing and a prayer, Air America 2.0 will be an answer. For all those fearful of plutocracy and theocracy, the pro-democracy hosts of AAR's programs are the answer. If the conservative media continue to spout propaganda and call it news, we are the alternative of truth, justice and the Air American way.

Part of Earth's mantle cover is missing
CARDIFF, Wales, March 6 (UPI) -- Welsh scientists are investigating a startling discovery in the Atlantic Ocean: Part of the Earth's mantle cover is missing.

Cardiff University scientists discovered an area extending thousands of square miles in the middle of the Atlantic in which the Earth's mantle -- the deep interior of the Earth, normally covered by crust many miles thick -- is exposed on the sea floor, nearly 10,000 feet below the surface.

Marine geologist Chris MacLeod of the university's School of Earth, Ocean and Planetary Sciences said: "This discovery is like an open wound on the surface of the Earth. Was the crust never there? Was it once there but then torn away on huge geological faults? If so, then how and why?"

The team intends to use sonar to image the sea floor in the area midway between the Cape Verde Islands and the Caribbean and take core samples.

Progress of the cruise can be monitored via a live web link to the ship at noc.soton.ac.uk/gg/classroom@sea/JC007/.

Murtha To Cut Funds For Iraq Contractors To Force Pentagon’s Hand »
Today, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and other House leaders held a press briefing to announce their Iraq war spending plan, which would redeploy U.S. forces out of Iraq by August 2008 at the latest. More details HERE.

Another provision of the bill was detailed by Rep. John Murtha (D-PA), chairman of the defense spending subcommittee. Murtha explained that the Pentagon has repeatedly stonewalled information about the role of private contractors in Iraq. “I asked the Under Secretary of Defense. He says, ‘I’ll let you know tomorrow.’ We’ve never gotten an answer back,” Murtha said.

Now, Murtha says, both the Government Accountability Office and the Special Inspector General for Iraq have come to him and said, “Help us get a handle on the contractors.” So Murtha is going to play hardball. “[W]e took five percent of their money out, and that’s about $800 million. We also fenced 10 percent of their money. We want answers about whether these contractors — how much it costs us, how many we have, and how the contracts are being, are being given to these various organizations.” Watch it:

4th newspaper drops Ann Coulter over "faggot" remark

Statement by Shreveport Editor Today on Dropping Ann Coulter

NEW YORK- The full statement by Alan English, executive editor of The Times of Shreveport, Louisiana, in announcing this morning that the paper would drop Ann Coulter as a columnist, follows.

This is the fourth daily to drop the Universal columnist this week following her use of "faggot" in a reference to former Sen. John Edwads in a speech last Friday. She also said last week that his campaign manager, former U.S. Rep David Bonior, was "fronting for Arab terrorists." From PDA:

We’re on the march Thursday morning. That’s when a growing group of Congress members is unveiling a plan for a fully-funded, systematic withdrawal of U.S. soldiers and military contractors from Iraq. The plan would provide all resources needed by military commanders to execute an orderly withdrawal by a date certain.

The proposal is being discussed at a 9:30am Capitol Hill news conference, featuring Reps. Barbara Lee, Lynn Woolsey, Maxine Waters, Jerry Nadler, Keith Ellison, Maurice Hinchey and others. There can be no complaints that this plan in any way endangers U.S. troops.

Antiwar forces are uniting behind this plan, which is expected to be proposed as an amendment to Bush’s $93 billion Iraq supplemental appropriation request. Instead of funding an endless war, Congress will be offered a way to fund an orderly end to the war -- thereby heeding the call voters sent them last November.

A special note to Air America Radio stream listeners

No doubt many people who listen to Air America Radio via their various webstreams are frustrated, as they often seem to be non-functioning as of late.

Is it due to the new ownership? Too many listeners maxing out the bandwidth? Did they forget to pay the bill? Is it Karl Rove's fault? I highly doubt any of those are the reason, but what it all comes down to is, the streams just ain't working sometimes.

Keep in mind that it is still possible to listen to Air America on the web, even with all the streaming issues. Looking at the top of the left-hand side of the page, you may notice a rather large list of shows and streaming links. Looks something like this:

Sam Seder 9A-12P

So, what is all this mumbojumbo? Well, the name (in this case the one belonging to Mr. Seder) is a link to his site, the times he's live on the air (in eastern time, to minimize confusion for all) and a whole bunch of cute little icons. These are not just icons, however. They are clickable links. And by clicking these, you will pull up either a real live stream or a page with stream links. The Air America shows listed all have the official feed links, for Windows Media Player, Real Player and Winamp/iTunes. But what if they're down? Well, I just added an outside link to the Air America shows. The second is a direct link to an embedded RealPlayer webstream from WWRL/New York, which is certainly better than pulling up that dreaded RealPlayer, right? The second icon denotes a direct link to the Windows Media stream for WWRL (though it may open up in another media player, such as Winamp, depending on your own computer's settings). These streams operate independently of Air America. And you can hear all of the network's shows live on that station, excluding The Young Turks. For their show, I'll add a link for WURP/Pittsburgh's mp3 stream. You can also listen to TYT live on other stations, including WXXM/Madison.

I plan on adding a few more links for other station streams. In the meantime, you can also check the various affiliates further down the page. Many of them stream live.

Even Michael Barone goes off the reservation?

From his US News blog from yesterday ...

The emerging scandal surrounding the dismissals of eight former U.S. attorneys should signify to American voters the depth, breadth, and permeation of corruption in the Bush administration.
When a U.S. senator (to wit, Pete Domenici, a New Mexico Republican) feels free to call a prosecutor at home and hang up on him for resisting political pressure in the course of executing his prosecutorial duties, the line between politics and law enforcement has been so thoroughly violated that it no longer exists.

"The real 11 inches of pure hypocrisy"

Quite possibly the best press release ever. From the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force:

The real eleven inches of pure hypocrisy

WASHINGTON, March 8 — U.S. Marine reservist Matt Sanchez was given an Academic Freedom Award at last week’s Conservative Political Action Conference, where Ann Coulter hurled her “faggot” slur against Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards. Sanchez, who attends Columbia University, also recently appeared on conservative talk shows where he criticized “radical anti-military students” he met during campus recruiting. Reports have since surfaced that Sanchez has allegedly worked as a gay porn star, prompting silence from his (now former) right-wing cheerleaders and charges of hypocrisy lobbed at Sanchez by gay bloggers.

Statement by Matt Foreman, Executive Director, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force

“While it may be delicious to watch our opponents twist and squirm after honoring and embracing a larger-than-life gay porn star, I don’t see any hypocrisy in U.S. Marine reservist Matt Sanchez’s actions. As is his right, he spoke out against what he believed was bad treatment by Columbia’s ‘radical anti-military students’ (Sanchez’s words). Right-wing pundits and organizations pounced on the handsome Latino Marine and showered him with praise and media exposure. Now, they’re scrambling for cover.

It's a Jawbreaker, no doubt!

Will US military kick out gay porn star and male prostitute Marine who starred in "Touched by an Anal"?

UPDATE: I'm waiting for Mr. Sanchez to endorse the Meehan legislation that would let him continue his service. In the military.

In this first-person piece he just wrote in Salon, former gay porn star and gay prostitute Matt Sanchez, a GOP hero, blames those evil liberals for outing his man-whore, porn star past. Sanchez, who starred in such thrillers as "Touched by an Anal: Four Hours of Heavenly Anal Action" - I'm not joking (this is NOT a work-friendly link) - now says that the porn industry is evil and liberal and that's why he became a conservative. Get it. It's our fault that he was a man-whore, it's our fault that he went in to gay porn. Uh huh. He also notes that his conservative friends are still embracing him. I'm sure they are. We've discovered long ago what hypocritees conservatives are about their family values. (We also discovered how many of the most ardent conservatives are big ole closet cases, so I'm sure they'd love to embrace you, Matt.)

Radical-bookstore owners: Fire officials were confrontational

Ben Browning and Nik Edgell escaped with their lives when arsonists ignited a blaze at their radical bookstore. But the biggest surprise, they say, came when questioning by arson investigators turned into a confrontational political debate.

Browning said, he was shocked when arson investigators for the Houston Fire Department became verbally aggressive, calling him and Edgell "anti-American" and "anti-federal government."

The scene happened Feb. 26 at Sedition Books, a politically radical "information shop" opened last year by a cooperative and stationed in an old wood-frame building at 4420 Washington, a site surrounded by new townhomes and other trendy developments.

The nonprofit venture offered literature on anarchism, radical feminism, communism, socialism, animal liberation, deep ecology, gay rights and other viewpoints outside the political mainstream. Most of the action was simulated, but the long-planned exercise took on new urgency after Cuban President Fidel Castro temporarily handed power to his brother, Defense Minister Raul Castro, and underwent gastrointestinal surgery in July.

"It's a mass migration plan in general. It doesn't have to be from Cuba," said Coast Guard Rear Adm. David Kunkel, director of the Homeland Security southeastern task force known as HSTF-SE.
